When Jos Thoné, today one of the undisputed superstars of pigeon racing, took his first steps on the long road towards stardom, someone said: “He’s still young, but be warned: he’s got talent and he’s got ambition and he will outstrip any of us.” That was many years ago and Jos Thoné in the course of his career indeed built up a colony of super class pigeons that did things never seen before: 4 times World Champion, 7 first Nationals, 2 first Internationals, 2 times National Champion KBDB, 12 times National Champion BDS and 13 times National Champion LCB. Today, the same might be said of Jente Van Driessche. He’s young, he’s capable, he’s ambitious… and he’s got Jos Thoné’s pigeons! In 2007, when he was barely fifteen years old Jente started out, stimulated by his grandfather Raymond, with some pigeons from a local champion. His talent immediately became abundantly clear when he won a first prize in his very first race and over the next three years managed to qualify himself regularly in the Provincial and National Championships. It was at that point Jente realized that he wanted to race professionally. He also knew however that he would need the right pigeons to

do so. In 2014 everything started to fall into place. His first loft, actually consisting of nesting boxes for chickens and pheasants had meanwhile been replaced by a small 2 by 1,5 meter affair in the yard of his grandfather, but this too was judged totally inadequate, thrown out and replaced by a brand new loft that would suit racing the great middle distance. The only thing that was now still needed was a team of the right pigeons. Jente didn’t need long to decide on this all important issue. A couple of years earlier he had met Jos Thoné and so had had the opportunity to judge the quality

lofts to return with a basket full of pigeons hoping to hit bullseye with one of them. Instead he went and carefully picked out the material that suited his ambitions on the great middle distance. One of the lines that immediately drew his attention was that of “Sachi”. This outstanding hen not only won 1st National La Souterraine against 19154 pigeons in 2012 (also being the fastest bird of more than 23000) but was also 32nd National on the Classic race of Bourges, against 33524 pigeons. Her father, “Frost”, was a brother to “Avril”,

Olympiad bird in 2007, 1st National Acepigeon LCB, 1st National Acepigeon BDS, 1st National Acepigeon “Het Duivenblad” and 2nd Provincial Acepigeon KBDB 2005. A better start was took three children of “Sachi” (among hard to imagine. Luck? Perhaps, but which “Mata”), a sister, and a halfsister isn’t luck where preparation meets op“Florence” - also out of “Frost” but this portunity? And Jente’s preparation was time mated to “Chloe” - with him to his flawless. He didn’t just go to the Thoné lofts in Dworp. The choice for “Florence”

was no coincidence. Her mother “Chloe” was a five time 1st prize winner - among which a 1st Semi National Moulins whose pedigree showed on mother’s side inbreeding towards “Jutta”. Her grandmother was “Dora Mar”, 1st Provincial and 2nd National Bourges 2006 against 11215 pigeons, 1st Provincial Melun, 15th National Bourges against 12549 pigeons in 2007, 7th National Argenton against 5001 pigeons and 1st National Acepigeon AVR. Looking at these lines, “Sachi”’s nestbrother “Sochi” also appeared on Jente’s radar. “Sachin”, son of “Sochi” and on mother’s side a great

heavily on the line of “Napoleon”, 1st Provincial Reims against 6459 pigeons and his sister “Nefertete”, 1st National Bourges Hens in 1996. Jente took two direct children of “Cavendish” with him: “Calvin” - son of “Cavendish” mated to a sister of “Avril” - and “Maybelle” - daughter of “Cavendish” mated to “Maybelline”, daughter of “Sachi” with a grandson of Marcel Aelbrecht’s “Perpignan”. With “Avram” he also got a combination of a halfbrother of “Cavendish” with the line of Olympiad bird “Avril”.

On mother’s side she traced her lineage back to the worldfamous bloodline of the late great Pros Roosen. “Thea” won 8 first prizes in her racing career, among which a 1st Provincial Vierzon in 2013 and the titles of 1st Provincial Acepigeon KBDB and Provincial co-Champion KBDB on the short distance.

Combine this incredible collection of world class breeders with the talent, know-how, eye for detail and the strong will to win that Jente Van Driessche possesses and it comes as no surprise that he rose like a meteor on the Belgian pigeon sport firmament in just three years time. We already mentioned his volcanic start in 2014 when he managed to rack up 12 victories with his team of young birds on distances between 156 and 423 kilometer. Next to “Rainman” and “Little Bullet”, pigeons like “Avrus”, son of “Avram” of the “Cavendish” x “Avril” line, and “Son Blue Ocean” showed their potential for the first time. The latter’s mother, “Blue Ocean”, was another Thoné top breeder out of the lines “Dora Mar”/“Jutta” x “Avril” that made

of a pigeon sport talent! grandson of “Dora Mar”, was also taken to reinforce his breeding stock. Although he wanted to stay with Jos Thoné’s bloodline, it was clear however that heavily drawing on just one line, no matter how good its performances, would put Jente’s stock in danger of too much inbreeding in the future. To avoid this potential problem he laid his eyes on a second pillar to found his new middle distance loft on. This pillar was “Cavendish”. A five time 1st prizewinner and 1st Provincial Acepigeon sprint KBDB in 2008, the red Cavendish drew

fantastic career, but still not enough for a man of Jente Van Driessche’s ambition. Only with another two originals, “Kajor” and “Thea”, his new breeding stock felt more or less complete. “Kajor” was a former racer at Jos Thoné’s loft, winning a 4th National Zone La Souterraine and a 23rd National Zone Chateauroux. Furthermore he had an impressive pedigree. His father was a son of “Sedna”, 1st International Narbonne and 7th Semi National Jarnac, and a halfbrother to “Sedna 2”, 2nd International Narbonne against 5870 pigeons in 2005. His mother was the 2nd Provinci-

a super combination with “Sachin”, producing excellent performers such as “Elsa” and “Frozen”. In 2014 “Elsa” already was 2nd Provincial Acepigeon Great Middle Distance Young Birds but it was only the start of her outstanding track record.In 2015 she won a 1st Semi National and 2nd National Zone Bourges against 7739 pigeons, and a 4th Semi National and 25th National Zone Chateauroux against 7877 pigeons. Both times she landed in the top 100 National against more than 20000 birds; enough to also win her the title of 3rd Provincial Acepigeon Great Middle Distance Yearlings. “Avrus” on the other hand would clearly show his talent as a sprint racer, winning no less than five firsts on Quièvrain and Noyon, as well as a whole series of top ten positions.

“Frozen” finished 8 times in the top 10 from 55 to 303 kilometer, coming in second several times from Quièvrain, Noyon and Souppes-sur-Loing, but also proved his worth as a breeder. He sired, among others, “Titania”, two times 1st prizewinner from the 156 km Noyon race. This breeding result was in fact even more significant than the top prizes won in the races. Here was, in a short period of time, the all important indication that Jente’s breeding stock was not only capable of producing a first generation of winners, but was “breeding through” into the next generations as well. The offspring of his world class breeders were top breeders in their own right, securing the future of his loft. More examples of this breeding gold mine soon followed. “Frozen”’s sister “Elza”, mated to “Kajor” became the mother of “Sednus”, 1st La Souterraine (540 km), 1st Chateauroux (475 km) and 3rd Provincial Acepigeon. “Olivia”, full sister of “Elsa” and “Frozen” on the other hand, became the mother of no less than seven different 1st prize winners. What is more important: she did this with different cocks! For example, with “Avram”, son of “Cavendish”, she produced sprint wonder “Avrus” and with “Mata”, son of “Sachi”, she produced “Olivier”, double 1st prize-

winner on Quièvrain. “Mata”’s aunt “Florence” was meanwhile paired to “Kajus”, a son of “Kajor” which Jente had mated to another direct Thoné: a granddaughter of “Avril” that had won a 1st prize from Sezanne. In 2016 the “Kajus” x “Florence” combination would prove its value by producing “Raymond”. Named in honor of Jente’s grandfather, “Raymond “ would be the star of the season, winning a 6th National Argenton against 19575 yearlings and a 2nd National Zone Argenton against 5314 pigeons. He also won two firsts from Bourges, two firsts from Argenton and a first Provincial Derby Hainaut plus 8 times second place from Argenton, Noyon and Souppes-sur-Loing; 19 positions in the top 10 in total. In one season! “Raymond”’s nestbrother took 6 prizes in the top 10 from Quièvrain, Noyon, Chateauroux and Argenton. Last season, 2017, continued the Van Driessche success story. “Renske”, halfsister of “Rainman” and granddaughter of “Cavendish” (her father is one of his last sons, “Calvin” mated to super breeding hen “Eleonore” of Stickers-Donckers origin), won a 1st Provincial Argenton (503 km) against 1714 pigeons and a 1st Semi National Argenton against 1165 pigeons. That same result

was also good for a 2nd National Zone against 6448 pigeons and a 7th National against no less than 21915 pigeons. One just feels a 1st National is right around the corner with such outstanding racers. Other than these results, “Renske” also scored a 4th Provincial and 4th Interprovincial from the 410 km Blois race, landing her the title of 1st Provincial Acepigeon Great Middle Distance KBDB young birds 2017. Her full sister “Rinske” scored two 3rd places on the Blois race, both times after two loft mates, again showing the potential of the “Calvin” x “Eleonore” couple. However, they were not the only top performers on the Van Driessche loft. “New Raymond”, for example, won no less than 4 firsts on Noyon and Blois. His father is the outstanding breeder “Kaxis”, another son of “Kajus” x “Florence”. His mother is “Blue Ocean”.

“Emilie”, a “Kajor” x “Blue Ocean” combination, won 9 prizes in the top 10; among them a 1st and 2nd Club, a 5th Semi National and a 7th Provincial Chateauroux (475 km). “Alexis”, named after Jente’s godchild, a grandson of “Sachi”, scored two top 10 positions on a Provincial level and a top 100 position on the National Argenton race against 21915 birds. All of these young birds raced an astonishing 5500 km during the season. With all this, Jente’s loft was in full expansion. With 10 breeding pairs in stock that all produced 1st prize winners and super quality late youngsters out of the Kajor x Elsa line the future looked very bright indeed. In Jente’s own words: “The quality of my late youngsters has risen considerably if I compare them to two years ago.” Given the performances of his racing team two years ago this really means something. But his strategy was always clear: keep the core of the loft small and the quality level high. With such a philosophy it is small wonder good references were also pouring in: In India, the combination Devaraj & Vignesh won a 350 km race from Silukalurpet. It was such a tough race that only one bird - theirs - made it back before

the time limit. The father of this pigeon was an original Jente Van Driessche out of “Mata” x “Blue Ocean”. In Romania Silviu Glodeanu won a 1st against 10286 pigeons with a granddaughter of “Little Bullet” and in Belgium Frank De Pelecyn scored 80% top prizes on the sprint from Quièvrain with children from “Calvin”. It came therefore as a complete surprise when Jente suddenly announced his total auction. Why stop now, with such a great team of breeders and racers standing by, ready for more success? Jente: “Unfortunately my grandfather Raymond recently passed away. He was a great help to me, taking care of - and training the birds, as my current construction business is very time consuming. My lofts are also at his place as I don’t have the space where I live now. So it is very difficult for me to continue racing at this stage.” So, although he plans to start again someday, for now the incredible Jente Van Driessche collection of Jos Thoné super birds will come up for sale. They say one man’s loss is another man’s gain. It is too bad a nice and capable young fancier such as Jente has to call it quits for now. But any fancier looking to make a spectacular leap forward in his performances would be a fool to let this opportunity pass him by!
