he Pulaski County Tourism Bureau began as a vision of community leaders to establish an organization to market the attributes of the county and shift some reliance for economic support from Fort Leonard Wood to tourism. A ballot was presented to the voters in 1998 asking them to approve a transient guest tax of 3 percent on lodging sales in the county. The ballot was approved, and the Tourism Bureau was created to oversee the distribution of collected funds for the purpose of marketing the attractions and natural resources of Pulaski County. The Tourism Bureau consists of an 11 – member board of directors, representative of the county. Two lodging, two restaurant, one representative each for the outfitter industry, business interest and one each for the incorporated communities represented by their Chamber of Commerce organizations. The Pulaski County Tourism Bureau opened the current location of the Pulaski County Visitors Center in St. Robert in 2001. The Visitors Center operates year-round and distributes free brochures of attractions from all across the state of Missouri to visitors and residents alike. The Visitors Center offers: Over 800 brochures and maps Free wireless access Free piping hot coffee Snack items for purchase Souvenirs; Patriotic, Route 66 and Missouri MODOT and Weather updates You can even send an e-postcard!

Fall activities include farms offering hayrides, petting zoos, corn and hay-stack mazes, antique tractor display and more. This is a great opportunity for families and youth groups to discover and appreciate life on the farm. DIXON: A PANORAMIC VIEW It may be a small town, but Dixon knows how to attract attention. Looking for the perfect day trip to gain a little relaxation or perspective? Why not try a scenic overlook that attracts artists, photographers and nature lovers? Your refuge lies just north of Interstate 44, where Dixon blends nature’s beauty, outdoor recreation and a welcoming community. Dixon is home to some of Pulaski County’s best camping, whether you’re pitching a tent or own an RV. Soak up the sun on the Gasconade River as you paddle its waters in a canoe. Golfers can work on their handicap on the beautiful nine-hole golf course. Spend an evening dining at Di Trapani's Italian Bistro which overlooks Portuguese Point; an extraordinary view of the Missouri landscape which is formed by two large rock formations 400 feet above the Gasconade River. This valley once provided land for Portuguese cattle and sheep farmers and is now an inspiring perspective for artists and photographers. Watch for special events and interactive mystery dinner theater shows, planned throughout the year.
CROCKER: REMEMBERING THE RAILROADS The days when railroads ruled America may have gone the way of the steam engine, but the town of Crocker preserves its railroad history with pride. From the railroad tracks that date back to the Frisco Railroad to the red caboose that resides in the heart of town, Crocker embraces its rail roots. What began as a small trading post in the 1800s, has grown to be a charming Midwestern town surrounded by the Ozark hills and meandering Gasconade River. Crocker’s history isn’t limited to the railroads, however; the James Gang, the notorious band of criminals who frequently robbed stagecoaches, trains and banks, once traveled the area regularly. Rumor has it that Jesse James had a cousin who lived in town. Railroad enthusiasts, history buffs and those who are simply curious are drawn to Crocker’s Frisco Depot Museum and Norma Lea Frisco Park. The depot was the City Mural, Dixo n last in Pulaski County and served as the mail pick-up and drop-off point for the rest If you’re fortunate enough to be in of the county. City of Richland
RICHLAND: THE PERFECT ESCAPE In 1869, when a railroad surveyor noticed the potential in a small area between Springfield and St. Louis, he undoubtedly had his eye on the miles of sprawling hills, the sparkling Gasconade River and the acres of green forest. The town of Richland sprang up along the Frisco Railroad and became a livestock production and farming community. Richland’s proximity to local highways makes it a short driving distance to major shopping malls and facilities, resort communities, and Lake of the Ozarks. A day at Shady Dell Park will entertain and captivate any crowd. Located in the heart of town, this 20-acre park is home to covered picnic pavilions, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, a horseshoe pitching area, tennis courts and an Olympicsized swimming pool. Events happen year round so come join us for the annual TriCounty Fair, Movie Night in the Park, the annual Truck and Tractor Pull to mention a few. Love to golf? Test your skill at our nine-hole community golf course located at the Richland Airport. Shop in Pulaski County’s oldest, continually, running business since 1869, H. E. Warren & Sons, cuddle a pig or hug an alpaca at the local petting farm. If you’re eager for adventure of a different nature, head out to the Gasconade River. Thirty miles of clear water winds its way around Richland to provide some of Missouri’s best bass fishing. I bet you have probably never eaten dinner in a cave, well you can do that too, right here in Richland!

City of Saint Rober
ST. ROBERT: COME GROW WITH US St. Robert rises to life on Interstate 44 as a welcome destination for weary travelers. Boasting over 1,700 hotel rooms and a wide variety of American and international cuisine restaurants, St. Robert is the perfect stop as the sun fades on a long day — but it also provides a destination in itself. The youngest city in Pulaski County, St. Robert is the business hub for surrounding communities. National franchises and local merchants give way to the main entrance of Fort Leonard Wood, home of the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Support Center and training post for the Engineer, Chemical and Military Police Corps. Visitors have always enjoyed sunny afternoons traveling Historic Route 66. The town is proud of its dedication to community and family; parks, picnic areas, playground areas, skate park, and Tiger Typhoon Aquatic Center which provide afternoon diversions for families. The
St. Robert Community Center is home to car shows, the Pulaski County Fair, Black Powder tradeshow and many more events throughout the year. Learn more about St. Robert at the Municipal Center Museum, play a round of golf at the Municipal Golf Course, take a walk or jog along one of our paved walking trails that line the city. There are park areas that pay proud tribute to the armed forces and neighboring Fort Leonard Wood with the presence of decommissioned Army and Marine vehicles. The authentic pieces make great photo opportunities! WAYNESVILLE: ON THE BANKS OF THE ROARING ROUBIDOUX Whether it’s the beauty of a summer sunset over the Roubidoux Spring, the breathtaking fall foliage along Route 66, or the charm of the downtown square, Waynesville will make you feel right at home. The giant Frog Rock, W.H. Croaker, greets visitors as they arrive in downtown Waynesville. The huge painted rock is a Waynesville landmark that hints to visitors they’ve entered a city with a personality all its own. Consider yourself a history buff? With a namesake like Revolutionary War hero “Mad Anthony” Wayne, Waynesville is as rich in history as its name suggests. Founded in 1833 and one of the oldest cities in Pulaski County, it has been a trading post for trappers and pioneers, a rest stop for stagecoaches traveling west, and an en-
campment for the infamous Trail of Tears. It has hosted battles and skirmishes in the Civil War and established its popularity with travelers and day-trippers alike with the development of Route 66. Waynesville’s history is showcased in downtown museums. If modern-day fun holds more appeal, spend the day perusing our gift and sweet shops, try one of our 66 beers, or enjoy Missouri wine. Relax at the beautiful Roubidoux Spring to experience one of the few urban trout streams in Missouri. The spring is also home to an underwater cave that draws certified cave divers from around the globe. In 1837, the spring was a site along the infamous Trail of Tears during the Cherokee removal and is a certified stop on the National Historic Trail, featuring a dramatic interpretive memorial. Welcome home to Waynesville!

Missouri’s First Purple Heart County
Pulaski County USA has a vast military history. In 1940, the county became home to Ft. Leonard Wood, one of the largest military bases in the country. Supporting and honoring our country’s military and their families is an integral part of our local spirit and heritage. Each day, America’s military men and women are welcomed and embraced by Pulaski Countians. Ft. Leonard Wood and Pulaski County are both home to many recipients of the Purple Heart, one of the highest military merits to recognize wounded warriors. To recognize those recipients, Pulaski is the first county in Missouri designated as a Purple Heart county. Receiving the Purple Heart designation expresses the desire of the county to remember and recognize veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart Medal and is another indicator of the prevalent patriotism that runs deep in Pulaski County USA. In addition to Pulaski County’s recognition, the cities of Saint Robert, Waynesville, Dixon and Crocker have all received recognition as Purple Heart Cities. History was made June 3, 2013 when Disabled American Veterans Harry L Herron Chapter No 49 was recognized as a Purple Heart Supportive Chapter, becoming the first service chapter to receive this designation nationwide. On September 12, 2014 the Crocker School District was recognized as a Purple Heart School District, the first to receive this designation in the state of Missouri. The Purple Heart Trail was established in 1992 by the Military Order of the Purple Heart to be a symbolic trail throughout all 50 states to commemorate and honor all men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the U.S. armed forces. The Purple Heart Trail originates in Mount Vernon, Va., and traverses the United States to California. PulaskiCountyUSA.com |

Additionally, over 5,000 POWs were detained here to work in agriculture and construction. PRESERVING AND CELEBRATING OUR MILITARY HERITAGE
Fort Leonard Wood leads the way to the future while preserving the proud history of the U.S. military. Fort Leonard Wood is home to museums, memorials and historic attractions that stir patriotism in all of us. Perhaps the most prominent is the John B. Mahaffey Museum Complex. Attracting over 125,000 visitors each year, the complex houses museums dedicated to preserving the history of Fort Leonard Wood, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Military Police Corps and the Chemical Corps. The museums combine vivid, life-size exhibits and authentic relics, including old weaponry, documents, vehicles and tools from all American military conflicts. The Fort Leonard Wood Museum captivates visitors at its outdoor World War II Compound. The compound is a grouping of original barracks built from December 1940 through May 1941. Designed to be temporary structures, the buildings were built at a rate of one every 45 minutes. The museum also shows descriptions of life on the post dating back to the early 1940s. Additionally, the museum pays tribute to the career of the post’s namesake, General Leonard Wood, whose career highlights include being the first commander of the Rough Riders (yep, he’s Theodore Roosevelt’s predecessor) and his appointment as the Army Chief of Staff. Some of Fort Leonard Wood’s most popular sites are highlighted in the Self-Guided Driving Tour Brochure. Several buildings along the tour date back to the origins of Fort Leonard Wood and contain interesting bits of history. The Black Officer’s Club was built in 1941 and houses a restored mural that was painted by Staff Sgt. Samuel Countee in 1945. Another structural highlight is the Rolling Heath Schoolhouse, which dates back to 1912. The Piney Valley Golf Course promises a challenging game of golf against the beautiful Piney Valley landscape. The 18-hole course is open to the public, year-round.

Outdoor Adventure Makes For a Lifetime of Memories
P
ulaski County offers outfitters which float the Gasconade and Big Piney Rivers. And don’t just think floating is only summer fun. Many offer fall and winter floating opportunities. Enjoy river floating, tent camping, RVing or settle back in one of our many cabins. Several resorts originally built in the 1930’s offer an escape from everyday life. Fishing opportunities abound with public and pay to use river accesses available throughout the county as well as fishing guide services. The Gasconade River, the longest river in Missouri (250 miles), is known for the best smallmouth bass in the nation. There are few other streams in the country with so much smallmouth water, so many fish and
as many trophy-sized smallmouth. The fish population is a result of a 1995 regulation change that established the stream section as a special management area for smallmouth where anglers may harvest only one smallmouth that measures 18” or longer. Anglers can expect to catch about twice as many 12-15” smallmouth in the special management area than they will fishing in other parts of the stream. The Roubidoux River is known for trophy trout fishing and is hugely popular with fly fisherman. Bass bugs, streamers and crayfish patterns are the items of choice. Spin fisherman do well with Crayfish crankbaits, Rapalas, and Mepp’s Spinners. Big Piney River, the largest tributary of the Gasconade, provides excellent opportunities for anglers to catch goggle-eye, small and largemouth bass, sun and catfish. Nine boat access points are along the rivers which wind through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Ozarks.
National Historic Trail Site Remembers the Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears was the relocation of Native Americans from the east, signed into law by President Andrew Jackson, in 1836. Native Americans were moved from their homelands, throughout Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, to be relocated in present day Oklahoma. This grueling 800 mile journey, from Georgia to eastern Oklahoma, brought 15,000 Cherokee Indians through Pulaski County in the fall of 1837 through winter 1839. They traveled 1018 miles a day, including an encampment
along the banks of the Roubidoux Creek and the Laughlin Park area in Waynesville. Laughlin Park was certified as a National Historic Trail Site and offers an interpretive memorial in this scenic area to reflect on the hardships the Native Americans suffered, as well as the loss of over 4,000 of their family members on the trek.
DAY TRIPS AND DRIVING TOURS
Pulaski County offers many driving tours with breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs and meandering rivers of the Ozarks.
Retrace the growth of the railroad and see the influence it had on the communities it created. Find a treasure or unique gift with a tour of the many antique shops and flea markets. Take a historical driving tour of Fort Leonard Wood and see the original buildings and natural resources at Miller Cave and Stone Mill Spring. Stop at the Mahaffey Museum Complex. Or get your kicks on Route 66 with our turn by turn written driving tour or download our free audio tour from PulaskiCountyUSA.com If already in the area, stop by the Visitors Center and pick up your copy of the driving tours.

Pulaski County Year Round Spring blooms to life and Pulaski County offers many activities to bring you out to enjoy the blossoms; Participate in a 5K run, poker run, browse a festival, join us for an evening of music. Outfitters are open for a great season of floating as you drift along enjoying the dogwood and red bud’s spring to life. Museums along Historic Route 66 open for the season offering a few hours of diversion. Trout, goggle-eye and catfish are plentiful. Activities continue to heat up as we roll into summer with opportunities for hootin’ and hollerin’ at fairs and festivals, rodeos and rides. With both equine and ATV rodeos, summer activities are some the hottest tickets in town! Listen to the roar of engines at the Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pulls or stroll along the classic autos at the Car Shows. BBQ Cook-off and International Festivals bring together food, friends and fun! Fall brings tons of fun for families. Weekends are filled with festivals and events that take advantage of Pulaski’s Ozark beauty. Plan an excursion to visit our working farms where you and the kids can warm up with some hot apple cider, search for pumpkins, navigate the corn or hay mazes, pumpkin bowling, duck racing, jungle gym made of hay, hillbilly golf, corn hole, corn bin, pumpkin catapult, zip lines. Hug an alpaca, pet a llama, pig, cow or donkey. Relax along the river and view the scenic foliage during a fall float trip or along one of our driving tours. Several of our outfitters provide fall float trips. For those ghost hunters; paranormal investigations are held throughout the season as well. Winter brings warm nights dining at one of many of our restaurants. For those adventurers a winter float and fishing trip might just be in order. Spend a few days searching for treasures along our antique and sweet trail. During mild winter days you will find our area golf courses open and ready for you to shake off that cabin fever.
Come join us in Pulaski County, a welcome place year round!
