Trail of Tears
T
he Trail of Tears was the relocation of Native Americans from the East, signed into law by President Andrew Jackson, in 1836. Native Americans were moved from their homelands throughout Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, to be relocated in present-day Oklahoma. This grueling 800-mile journey brought 15,000 Cherokee Indians through Pulaski County in the fall of 1837 through winter 1839. They traveled 10-18 miles a day, including an encampment along the banks of the Roubidoux Creek and the Laughlin Park area in Waynesville. Laughlin Park was certified as a National Historic Trail Site and offers an interpretive memorial in this scenic area to reflect on the hardships the Native Americans suffered, as well as the loss of more than 4,000 of their family members on the trek.

L
ocated north of Interstate 44 along St. Robert Blvd, in Missouri’s second Purple Heart City, tourists will find the “Military Rock Art Park” featuring over 40 rock murals decorated with crests and symbols from units attached to Ft. Leonard Wood. The park is also home to the nationally recognized “Freedom Rock 50 State Tour”. Saint Robert’s Freedom Rock, set in 12 inches of concrete, measures 9 feet by 10 feet and is made of Missouri limestone, quarried in Laquey, MO. Artist, Ray “Bubba” Sorenson doesn’t use the typical “off the rack” paint found at local hardware and home improvement stores. The natural pigment used in some of his blue hued paint is mined in Afghanistan and the finished paint can cost as much as $600 a gallon. Stop in the Pulaski County Visitor Center and get your Route 66 passport stamp, don’t have a passport yet? No worries, you can purchase your Route 66 passport book here too!
Off the Beaten Path: No matter what the season or time of year, Pulaski County has so much to explore! Bussman Lodge in Mark Twain National Forest, Swedeborg/St. John Cemetery - listed in Swedish-American travel guides or Geocaching locations are great places to see and discover outdoors. Don’t forget to venture to Crocker, Dixon, and Richland there are lots of things to do and see there too. Get off the road and hit the river, the view from the river is phenomenal!
