The displays and exhibits at the gallery tell the story of the activities carried out by each foundation.
Welcome to The Foundations’ Gallery After a long period of operations, battling and defending their “causes”, the three foundations have now, opened its doors to its gallery beginning October 2017. The gallery boost a total floor area of 3,000 sq ft which exhibits the information about the three foundations, namely, the EMKAY Foundation (YE), Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation (BMOUIF) and the Pulau Banding Foundation (PBF). Each foundation is allocated a distinctive space to exhibit their background, activities that are being carried out as well as a corner show-casing souvenir and premium items for sales as well as and products produced from the respective activities. To know the history and milestones of each foundation over the years, a timeline board has been strategically placed at the center of the gallery. From this board, guests will be able to track the achievements of each foundation since their inception. To enable the visitors to further understand the activities of each foundation, a reading area equipped with reading materials and digital photo frames is set-up. In this area, visitors will be able to gain detailed information on the inception of each foundation, its vision, mission and view photos and videos of the activities carried out. A striking similarity between the three foundations is the aspiration to give back to society through their respective activities. Although
each foundation’s activities are different in nature, through mutual understanding of all three, a new programme have been set up. The programme that champions for the protection of Mother Nature named Green Ranger Malaysia (GRM) was created in 2011. GRM has also been given a space in the gallery for guests to know the uniqueness of the programme which has attracted the attention of many parties including the Ministry of Education Malaysia. While BMOUIF boasts its orangutan primats, PBF on the other hand features its array of butterflies and fishes from the Belum-Temengor Rainforest. Not to be missed is YE’s exhibit of handicraft items by the indigenous peoples of Belum-Temengor and crafts made by the physically challenged children under YE’s skills training programme. A mini i-Play Toy Library corner can be found inside the gallery too. This in fact is suitable to be used as a space to de-stress and fatigue whilst playing with the toys that are laid out. Reading materials produced by the three foundations can be found in this area for the reading pleasure of the visitors. Visitors to the gallery are treated to a video presentation of the foundations and can find news clippings of the activities in the gallery. This special gallery holds a myriad of information of the three foundations in the hopes of convincing visitors and guests that we have extensive experience and a good track record in the works that we do. It can also be an avenue for volunteers to channel their expertise and services according to their interest.

Foundation Gallery Each table features informational documents and a digital photo gallery for visitors.

In addition to providing a touch
of motivation, MUSIKA also aims to expose the native children to a traditional musical instruments such as the angklung as well as providing them with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with other modern day musical instruments. The objective of this programme is to form a group of confident and positive minded teenagers.

This was one of the much needed objectives to sustainably manage the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex and is one of the significant contributions of PBF on conservation of BTRC. Other activities that PBF has undertaken during the last 10 years were raising funds to organize the two scientific expeditions to BTRC in 2012 and 2015 involving a total of 350 research teams and support staff. PBF also has provided R&D grants to more than 10 local and international postgraduate students since 2008. In 2016 alone PBF has facilitated about 140 researchers and students in their field and research works within BTRC itself.
Pulau Banding Foundation (PBF), a brainchild of the Chairman and Founder of the EMKAY Group, Tan Sri Hj. Mustapha Kamal was incorporated on 7 November 2007 with a mission to promote sustainable development of the rainforest ecosystem of Belum-Temengor Rainforest Complex (BTRC). PBF’s aims are to promote, undertake as well as perform research and studies on tropical rainforest. PBF also conducts man-power training and disseminate knowledge to the public. To ensure that the aspiration and preservation work follows through, PBF also established the following basic facilities within its three acre site at Pulau Banding, Gerik: 1. Pulau Banding Rainforest Research Centre (PBRRC) 2. Pulau Banding Dormitory (PBD) 3. Belum Discovery Centre (BDC) PBRRC, established on 1 March 2008 provides facilities for research work on BTRC and has initiated linkages and networking with more than 20 local and international research institutes as well as universities. PBD, established on 30 July 2012 provides accommodation for at a reasonable cost for researchers and scientists to stay and carry out their research activities within BTRC. BDC, established on 30 December 2013 provides facilities for visitors to obtain firsthand information on BTRC and rainforest ecosystem. Sime Darby Foundation, The Prime Ministers Department and EMKAY Group are the major donors for all the building assets found on the Pulau Banding Island. Since its inception 10 years ago, PBF has contributed significantly to conservation and eco-tourism activities at BTRC, Gerik, and Perak, Malaysia. PBF has been involved actively in conservation and awareness programmes for all walks of life including school children, local communities and the
In 2013, PBF in collaboration with PERHILITAN and Perak State Park organized the First Green Batch Forest Guide Course, a special course to train the guides to take visitors within Belum-Temengor forest vicinity. PBF in collaboration with UNDP has also participated actively in a number of local and international programmes on conservation such as Biodiversity Financing (BIOFIN) and Protected Area (PA) Financing. Under the education and awareness programme on nature and environment for schoolchildren, PBF works closely with Yayasan EMKAY on a programme called Green Ranger Malaysia in which more than 2000 students and 110 primary and secondary schools have participated in. Belum Rainforest Summit (BRainS) was successfully conducted from the 17 – 22 October 2016. This event marked a milestone for PBF as it was the first time it collaborated with other NGOs, government agencies and state government. The event created a platform to share views and experiences with international participants on issues and solutions faced by Tropical Forest around the world.

Belum Rainforest Summit
BELUM RAINFOREST SUMMIT 2018 BRainS 2018 (7-9 May 2018) The Belum-Temengor Rainforest Complex (BTRC) is one of the oldest rainforests on the planet, at more than 130 million years old. This ancient refuge is home to many endangered species including the Malayan tiger, Asian elephant, Malayan tapir and the Rafflesia flower – all of which are recognisable icons of Malaysia’s biodiversity. It is also the only location in the country where all 10 species of Malaysia’s hornbills can be found. Much work has been done to safeguard this natural treasure by the state government, local communities, NGOs, scientists and activists. The gazetting of the Royal Belum State Park as a protected area was a major milestone in conservation as was the acceptance of the State Park as a candidate World Heritage Site by UNESCO. But there is still much more to be done. Poaching and habitat loss threaten the survival of this ancient but fragile rainforest.
We are pleased to report that the inaugural Belum Rainforest Summit (BRainS) 2016 brought together more than 100 conservationists, researchers and policymakers from across Malaysia and the world to Pulau Banding – the gateway to Royal Belum. After a week of engaging presentations and panel discussions, we produced the Belum Rainforest Blueprint – a document outlining four key issues affecting the Belum-Temengor rainforest and tangible solutions for addressing them. We are pleased to announce that based on the success of BRainS 2016, we would be continuing the discussions at the Belum Rainforest Summit 2018. BRainS 2018 will be held from 7-9 May 2018 and will be hosted at the same venue as the first BRainS – the Belum Rainforest Resort on Pulau Banding. BRainS 2018 will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of PBF. We expect the next Summit to welcome over 100 attendees representing government officials, research scientists, conservationists, NGOs, community leaders and policy makers. A dynamic mix of discussion panels, insightful presentations and enhanced networking opportunities will once again highlight the issues affecting the BTRC, especially with regards to what was put forward in the Belum Rainforest Blueprint.
7 - 9 MAY 2018
Since its inception 10 years ago, we, the Pulau Banding Foundation (PBF), have worked to promote the BTRC through outreach campaigns both locally, with students and residents around the rainforest, and internationally, by working with our partner organisations such as the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). We fully support the goals of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) for sustainable use of rainforest resources, which is why we champion ecotourism as a means of promoting the BTRC as well as generating revenue for those whose livelihood depends on what the rainforest offers. In addition, we also organise scientific expeditions into the BTRC periodically as there is still so much to discover about it.
BELUM RAINFOREST RESORT Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak, Malaysia
Even though our efforts have made significant progress in promoting the BTRC to a wider audience, we have decided to take one step further in our conservation plans by organising our very own conference. Our intention ORGANISED BY CO-ORGANISED BY was to invite the best minds in conservation, biology, forestry and public policy to come together and share their knowledge on how we can protect our planet’s rainforests while using it in a sustainable manner – with a special focus on the BTRC of course.
BRainS 2018 will focus on the following themes: 1. Biodiversity and ecosystem services 2. Social forestry and community 3. Wildlife conservation 4. Stakeholder participation and governance
Once again, we are working closely with our partners in government and non-governmental organisations as well as other stakeholders of the BTRC. Our collaborators on BRainS 2018 include EMKAY Group, the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Perak State Government, Perak State SPONSORED BY Park, Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). We cordially invite anyone with an interest in rainforest conservation, sustainable forestry and public policy to be a part of the discussion with us at the upcoming Belum Rainforest Summit. Rainforests are our planet’s gift to us but it is a gift that must not be squandered. Join us. Get involved. Save our rainforest.

Pugmark Supercamp Pugmark is the term used to refer to the footprint of most animals, and every individual animal species has a distinct pugmark which is used for identification (“Pugmark”, n.d.). Green Ranger Malaysia (GRM) successfully organised its first Supercamp, focusing on tigers and the issues surrounding it. The camp was held from the 13th -15th October 2017 at Belum Adventure Camp (BAC), Pulau Banding, Gerik. Why tigers? Tigers are a near-extinct species in the Belum-Temengor Forest and GRM would like to create awareness to the local community as well as to the Belum-Temengor stakeholders on the issues faced by the tigers in Malaysia. It is also to reduce forest encroachments in the Belum-Temengor Forest area. Thirty seven participants from the Department of Orang Asli (JAKOA), District Education Department, Perak State Parks Corporation, District Land office, PERHILITAN, Fire Department, local media practitioners and the local youth council took part in the three days camp.
Throughout the camp, participants learned about the biology of tigers, its behaviour, and the current issues and legal provisions in Malaysia. They also discussed ways on how they can create awareness about tigers in their respective organisations. Participants were also encouraged to act as anti-poaching advocates and to provide poaching information should they come across it.
The camp came to an end with the closing and certificate presentation ceremony, officiated by En. Fakhrul Hatta bin Musa, Deputy Director General I, Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) Peninsular Malaysia.
En. Fakhrul Hatta bin Musa, Timbalan Ketua Pengarah I, Jabatan Perlindungan Hidupan Liar dan Taman Negara (PERHILITAN) Semenanjung Malaysia.
