RUBY PALMER Lives and works in Hudson Valley, NY Ruby Palmer was born in Boston in 1969 and spent the majority of her childhood in rural Pennsylvania. She received her BA in Painting and Drawing from Hampshire College in 1992. In 2000 she received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts.
ARTIST STATEMENT Observed, remembered, and invented structure has been a starting point for many years. The spatial characteristics and associations with architectural fragments, nature, and our bodies are at play in my studio. I get many pots cooking at the same time, in order to be free of self judgement and doubt. In this busy, liberated state, I find the thread. The resulting forms are familiar and unfamiliar, referencing things I feel, know, and/or remember, but with an open eye to including random occurrences in the studio, visual notes of abstractions from the world around me, and new experiences of composition. In the process, I try to stay open to taking risks and including humor.
