Artist Statement - ENTRANCE “Material properties can influence the content of an artwork, from the fine maze of cracks in glazes and paint, the gloss of dried ink, and the way liquids react with surfaces. Ink droplets evaporate and leave reticulation marks, evolving into broken patterns such as those found in fingerprints and crystalline structures. Fractal fields impose a structure on the paths of eclipses, planets, moons and suns, forming a physical link between the known and the unknown, imparting imperfect knowledge accumulated in fragments. Self-portraits flow with the memory of liquid or have the body’s absence described by thousands of tiny staves. Materials flow through physical processes and reactions while I am working with them, allowing me to see their organizational systems. As the systems resolve into the structures I paint and draw, my decisions are guided by material properties, a melding of patterns, process and attention.”

Artist Statement - TERTIARY My recent works continue to be influenced by the natural world, often beginning as a line drawing. These new compositions become reinvented into a personal visual vocabulary that I use for prints, sculpture, and painting. When these compositions are taken into space and given dimension they often pose a challenge and require an interpretation, which is when tertiary color becomes important. I begin the painting process by applying colors from my tertiary pallet, “April Love,” “Mango Tango,” “Brezo Blue,” and “Lime Sorbet.” These mixes of blues, reds, and greens are often taken to the extreme in order to fill the complex composition of lines with color. Symbolism mixed with allegory equals a tertiary composition.
