For this series, I write cursive text on a smooth surface with ink and then use a squeegee to destroy the marks I have created. The ink spreads across the surface into a new composition. The resulting marks are the remnant of the written word, but the meaning has been removed. I use phrases and words my daughter has said as she learns to talk, as well as my own memories of a family member who suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease. The series is an effort to represent the acquisition and subsequent potential loss of language, as well as its vast capacity and shortcomings.
