What’s your impression of the local and national real estate markets?
I’d argue that all real estate is local. While much of the nation is paralyzed by headlines of foreclosures, lending debacles and declining values, pockets of the country are fairing quite well. In Crested Butte many potential buyers are taking a time-out to evaluate the real estate feeding frenzy of the past three years. Savvy investors are taking advantage of this lull in activity. I’m anticipating the inevitable question from the others: “Why didn’t you make me buy back in 2008/2009 when the value was so impressive?” It’s difficult to time real estate markets, but I’m confident that the Crested Butte lifestyle will never lose its value.
What is one of Crested Butte’s best kept secrets?
I’m not going to tell you where to find untracked powder stashes two days after a storm or pools that hold 20” rainbows. That would deprive you of the thrill of discovering them on your own. Right?
The word is out that Crested Butte is the birthplace of mountain biking, the Wildflower Capital of Colorado and home to steep and deep skiing. During the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, however, only locals and a few lucky visitors get to enjoy the serenity of having this enormous playground to ourselves. It’s also the perfect time to preview real estate.

I look forward to the quizzical expressions on faces when I say, “I skinned up the mountain by the light of my headlamp this morning to make first tracks down the mountain prior to the lifts opening.” I anticipate riding up chairlifts with first time visitors to CB and viewing my backyard through their eyes.
