FROM THE EDITOR
The Creative Muse

CAPEHART
Not long ago, I met Barbara Hulanicki through a mutual friend, in South Beach. Over cups of strong Panther coffee, we talked about everything from hotel design to photography, and she mused about the 1960s and her improbable rise to fashion stardom through her boutique, Biba. Like many things in her life of 84 years, it happened by one thing leading to another, the result of putting herself out there and, as she puts it, stirring up energy. I was enthralled— and compelled to share that energy with our readers. Barbara headlines our creativity-themed issue this month, and her story, written by biographer Paige Bowers, is a must read. Turn to “By Design” on page 48. I’d also like to point out senior editor Kristen Desmond LeFevre’s thoughtful Q&A with Miami-based poet Campbell McGrath. I’ve been following Campbell’s work since I met him at the Florida Book Awards in 2013 and read some of his poetry, previously unknown to me. He’s regarded as a witty and incisive chronicler of American culture, with all its quirks and foibles, and he’s been recognized on an international stage for his work. Since April is National Poetry Month, there’s no better time to get to know our pre-eminent poet. Turn to “Verses and Vibes” on page 22. If photography is more your thing, check out “Still Waters,” a visual essay of expansive Everglades imagery by Paul Marcellini. Through Paul’s lens, the simple beauty of a freshwater prairie or a star-embroidered night sky takes on a haunting dimension. See for yourself on page 72. There’s certainly no shortage of creatives—or creative pursuits—in the Aventura and greater Miami area. I hope our pages inspire you to call upon your own muse, or at least appreciate the voices that make our community so diverse and vibrant. Enjoy the issue!
