ANOTHER INEVITABLE SUCCESS
OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DECADES, PORSCHE HAS MADE A HABIT of proving its doubters wrong. Dating to the introduction of the Cayenne SUV, each model hence appearing to fly in the face of the brand’s sporting roots was met with criticism. Of course, the company immediately proved it was capable of producing a practical, capable off-road vehicle which maintained its classic DNA. It so happened that the Cayenne also saved the company from financial ruin.
Nearing the dawn of the 2020s Porsche did not find itself in a precarious position. It required no savior; yet forged ahead with the development of the Taycan EV—again giving rise to the same sort of scorn met by the Cayenne. Within a year however, the Taycan took the mantle as Porsche’s bestselling model. With the former, the brand proved it could successfully combine practicality and entertainment; the latter merged performance and efficiency. The Taycan Sport Turismo now fuses all of the above.
The time-warping acceleration and uncanny silence of the original is retained, yet accompanying it in the rearview mirror—in addition to the sports car struggling to keep up—is a swooping hatchback providing an expansive trunk and increased rear headroom. The intuitive steering and flat cornering characteristics are also present, making piloting the Sport Turismo between on-ramps a quiet joy.
Of course, the genetic sports car performance is secondary to the Sport Turismo’s true purpose. This is meant as the all-encompassing primary vehicle in its owner’s garage; capable of handling all weather conditions or lengths of journey be it a run to Publix or a weekend jaunt to Daytona Beach—well within the EV’s single-charge range.
Should the road conditions unexpectedly change at any point, the Sport Turismo’s 3-chamber air suspension can accommodate for additional ground clearance, while the optional fender cladding protects from errant branches and kicked-up gravel. This peace of mind might encourage owners to trek even further from South Florida; in which case the Sport Turismo can be charged at a rate of 270 kilowatts—enough to reach 80% of full charge in less than 23 minutes. This allows time for the most essential of road trip necessities: walking the dog and enjoying a sampling of local fare.
Even with no family vacations planned, the Sport Turismo’s supple ride, luxuriously appointed interior, and show-stopping looks are undoubtedly at home at the forefront of any valet lineup. Lightning has been captured in the proverbial bottle yet again, though never before in such a beautiful vial.
Porsche continues to progress forward, leaving out-of-touch critics and out-of-date internal combustion engines behind in equal measure. Surely the future holds more decisions that will be met with cries of the company losing its way yet again; but if history is any indication, unrivaled success will again follow swiftly.
