AROUND TOWN

Culinary GEMS

Foodies in the know have likely heard of Delray Beach’s Craft Food Tours that take over Atlantic Avenue. That same team, comprised of Matt Guidice and Anthony Guzman, is now bringing the fun south with a new Fort Lauderdale rendition. During this three-hour walking tour, head out with Taylor Davis (who’s leading the expansion south) to explore five spots on Las Olas, where you will enjoy three cocktails and 10-plus tastings. A sample itinerary might include brunch bites at Wild Sea & Oyster at the historic Riverside Hotel followed by Mexican fare at El Camino, American classics at B Square, Cuban delights at Cuba Libre, and a pick-me-up at Ann’s Florist & Coffee Bar. There’s even a brief stop at the Historic Stranahan House Museum to discuss Fort Lauderdale’s history—and take a much-needed culinary break. “The value of the tour is you may go to new places you’ve never been, and you may try new foods you otherwise wouldn’t have,” says Davis. The group plans to add happy hour tours into the mix soon. Tours are offered on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (craftfoodtours.com)

MINDFUL MIXOLOGIST

Get FIGGY with It

A long-standing symbol of abundance and fertility, figs are often gifted, shared, and enjoyed during the holidays. Botanically, the Ficus carica, commonly known as the fig, isn’t a fruit at all but rather a syconium: a fleshy stem with enclosed flowers tha bloom internally. It contains only female flowers and propagates with the help of the minuscule fig wasp, whose only task is to pollinate one of the world’s 900 species of fig plant varieties

Ancient Olympians were crowned with fig wreaths and earned figs for their athletic prowess, while the roman author Pliny the Elder praised the fig’ health and restorative powers. In fact, figs and their leaves are Get Figgy with it
