Create an At-Home Spa Getaway Rejuvenate with a relaxing spa experience in the comfort of your bathroom with tips from these specialists.

s the creative director of KRISTA + HOME, Krista Watterworth Alterman spent four seasons hosting HGTV’s “Save My Bath” designing almost 60 different bathrooms. She encourages her clients to think of their master bathrooms as their own personal spa and to let her design accordingly. “I love zen-like retreats for my clients to relax after a long day,” Alterman says. “As a working mom today, I know the importance of a good spa day.” In one project, Alterman used a balance of masculine and feminine elements. She used a charcoal finish on the cabinetry to contrast the porcelain oak flooring, which was carried throughout the home. To add to the sensual vibe, she included an exposed

shower with floor-to-ceiling views of the lush tropical foliage on the property. Alterman likes to incorporate natural, organic materials for her designs. While marble is her first choice, she notes there are many other stunning options. She also encourages using soothing hues, such as soft neutrals in gray or white palettes. The most important feature? Alterman says the tub should be the focal point. She likes to install stand-alone tubs that are a work of art on their own. A deep soaking tub is the perfect place to relax and unwind. For added luxury, consider installing elements like a steam shower, towel warmer, or a luxurious toilet with a heated seat and bidet.

Keri Feeney, Angelika Stuart and Alicia Weaver of Alicia Weaver Design have also completed many spa bath renovations. They like to start with a soothing color for the walls, cabinets and trim to set the tone of the room and the overall design. They say adding a wallpaper that can withstand humidity can also create a whole other dimension to the room. The group also used natural stone and porcelain tiles on the walls and ceiling of a bathroom to achieve that luxurious spa feeling. In larger bathrooms, they mix and match patterns and different types of stone. Small details canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be missed. At a spa, there are always towels and robes at your fingertips, so Alicia Weaver Design likes to mimic this in a home spa as well.Â They replace towel bars with several robe hooks so you can hang everything within reach of your shower or bath.

What can you do to get the look? 1. KRISTA + HOME and Alicia Weaver Design agree that towels are extremely important for an at-home spa look. Alicia Weaver Design says, “Easy ways to pull the spa look and feel all together are using big, white, fluffy towels, rolled up on an open shelf for easy access.” Alterman adds, “I always tell my clients to get the fluffiest, most luxurious towels they can buy.” 2. Alicia Weaver Design notes the importance of setting the mood with music. “Spas always have the melodic tunes gently playing in the background, so we love to recreate this in our designs. We love Sonos Play:1 speakers for bathrooms.” 3. Alterman enjoys adding seating elements to her bathrooms. “If there is space, I love to install some seating or at least a little pouf or stool where my husband can sit and chat with me while I am relaxing in the tub.” 4. Both teams emphasize bathroom lighting. Alterman might lean toward a stunning chandelier or recessed lighting under the cabinetry to create a soothing atmosphere. On the other hand, Alicia Weaver Design says to make sure all lighting is on a dimmer switch for those long, hot baths at night. “We also use LED candles on timers as an accessory when styling our bathrooms,” Weaver says. “You can set them to come on every night and turn off automatically. This will create a very zen mood without even having to think about it.” 5. Alicia Weaver Design recommends several bonus items to finish a spa look, such as integrated towel warmers and selecting the right shower head, with a steam shower system being another possibility.

Along with keeping counters clear, keeping cabinets organized is also a must. Instead of a knife block, opt for a magnetic strip or wooden drawer insert. Aim for matching cookware, dishes and storage containers, especially those that nest. 5) Material muses. Not all material is conducive to a minimalist kitchen. Try wood, concrete and quartz countertops and wood or lacquer cabinetry for a cohesive and uniform appearance.

s a third-generation homebuilder, Ron Ellish knows the South Florida luxury market. So when he purchased this lot and its existing home, he enlisted a dream team to help him achieve his vision. Architect Stuart Brenner of Boca Raton-based Brenner Architecture Group and designer Jeanne Manetti of The Decorators Unlimited worked with Ellish to create this contemporary home located inside the St. Andrews Country Club community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a place where the whole family can come and be together,â&#x20AC;? Ellish says. The fully furnished and decorated,7,794-square-foot property, currently listed at $4.8 million, has four bedrooms, six full and two half bathrooms, a threecar garage and even comes with a golf cart to zip around the neighborhood. Complete with an elevator and a walk-in glass wine cellar, this home has a modern open floor plan that evokes a lavish yet comfortable design.

FOY E R ENTRANCE Stepping through the 10-foot glass pivot door, the foyer embraces the home’s modern, airy ambience as it welcomes guests and leads them into the expansive living room. A stunning soaring staircase—the centerpiece of this space with its wood caps and glass railing—floats over the polished White Cloud porcelain slab floors. Similarly, the foyer’s chandelier hovers over the space with several radiant glass cylinders suspended at different heights. A painting from the Kevin McPherrin gallery in Boca Raton adds a pop of color to the room as it hangs above the stairs opposite of the Carrara marble console table with its polished stainless steel base. LI VI NG ROOM Serene natural light floods the living room from the 21-foot floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the pool and verdant golf course. A modern touch that creates interest in the room is the ceiling’s reverse coffer detail, which adds a unique dimension in the abstract sculptural illusion, almost like clouds floating above the space. Below, two upholstered sofas in white and soft gray tones sit between two Thayer Coggin and two dark gray Bernhardt chairs. The Century Furniture coffee table in acrylic and lacquer gray finish and custom Carpet Source geometric tribal rug in shades of off-white and taupe complete the sitting space. With its open concept floor plan, high ceilings and unrestricted views of the back patio, this home is spacious and comfortable while still evoking a sense of elegance and sophistication. D I N I N G ROOM Another sleek separation element that Manetti incorporated into the home is the dining room’s INTERLAM sculpted wall. The three-panel screen wall is one more statement to the openness of the home as it allows diners to overlook the main entrance foyer and living room. The Decorage table with a stainless steel inlay by Bernhardt and its matching upholstered off-white chairs overlook the front yard. A striking Hammerton Studio chandelier in a nickel finish glows overhead, its textured curved glass in smoke granite suspended as it reflects the light. FA M I LY ROOM The Bernhardt sofas in medium and dark gray upholstery anchor this space with the accompanying Thayer Coggin cream leather low profile sling chairs with polished stainless steel detail. A delightful Interlude clear acrylic and smoked gray oak table sits in between them while a hammertextured black iron console table by Bernhardt backs up to one sofa. The ZOKA Group acrylic coffee table is a special one. It seems to float, yet it’s secured by its movable live edge piece made of semi-petrified wood. P OW D E R ROOM This half bathroom glistens thanks to the Phillip Jeffries hand-painted metallic wallpaper and Eichholtz beveled mirror. The shine is offset by the black matte tile backsplash accent wall and floating two-tone cabinets in metallic and dark wood. CLU B ROOM & OFFI CE This light-filled room can function as a clubroom or office. The L-shaped veneer desk overlooks the back patio. Built-in shelves with LED linear lighting function as storage or sculpture display ledges while accentuating the desk’s taupe wood grain. The Norwalk Furniture taupe patent leather sectional with two chaise lounges has an upholstered base that adds texture to the room. Also adding to the room’s texture is the linen wallpaper and luxury taupe carpet. As the only room in the home with that flooring, it’s a warm, comfortable space for both work and play. The triptych piece from Leftbank Art hanging over the sofa pulls color into the room. The sheer vertical-stripped drapes were placed in a pocket to avoid noticeable hardware and give the windows a streamline feel—almost as if the drapery is flowing down from the coffered ceilings with drywall beams.

M AST E R S U I T E White oak wood floors with a gray stain warm this space and tie in the roomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gray and taupe color palate. While the bed is usually the centerpiece of a bedroom, the real showstopper is the beautiful wall detail behind it. The custom wall detail by Fasig Design has a wall covering in the center and sleek end mirrors that add depth to the room. In front of the mirrors are custom glass-top nightstands finished off with John Richard ribbed glass and polished nickel lamps. The Adriana Hoyos bed with an upholstered headboard and an acrylic Bernhardt upholstered bench with stainless steel accents sit over the Kravet wool accent rug. Opposite the bed, a Bernhardt dresser with a weathered greige finish and cast aluminum hardware complements the heavier sheer fabric drapery in dark gray and taupe shades. To add a quaint sitting area to the first-floor master suite, two plush Norwalk dark taupe upholstered chairs with brushed nickel accents and a Bernhardt white marble and acrylic side table sit near the windows. The master bathroom has quite a unique layout with separate his and her bathrooms and closets that are connected by one spacious porcelain shower. The Phillip Jeffries wallpaper adds texture to the space while the white lacquer cabinets, metallic gray quartz countertops, acrylic Global Views vanity chair and rippled glass suspended chandelier all add a brightness to the room.

uilding and development run in Sarah Zohar’s blood. She opened her shop, Sarah Z Designs, after her move from New York to Florida 12 years ago, but she’s been around the design business all her life. Her dad is a building and development veteran, as are her brother and husband of 23 years. Zohar’s passion for design and unique vision has made her a goto for luxury designer residences throughout South Florida and abroad. She embarked on the project in Hallandale after a mutual friend introduced her to the couple who purchased the home. As their primary residence, the family of four wanted to create a space for the kids and adults to enjoy together. Working with Stephen H. Brandt & Associates and R3 Construction, the

redesign and remodel took about two years. As part of the project, Zohar was entrusted to work with some of the client’s furniture, and she weaved those pieces in effortlessly while elevating the home’s design. The 4,300-square-foot waterfront home with four bedrooms, four bathrooms, gym, home office, game room, theater room and music room features an open concept main living space floor plan and soaring windows that overlook the pool, patio and water. Inspired by the outdoors, Zohar brought in nature’s palette inside with pops of blues and greens alongside organic materials. FOY E R

A custom walnut wood front door opens into the cozy foyer that leads to the home’s expansive great room. The gray concrete porcelain floors create a balance with the home’s wall color: white with a slight hint of gray. This spacious kitchen is every home chef’s dream. Radiant natural light beams in from the windows overlooking the back and side yards. Counter space is not lacking here. Thanks to its size, the room boasts not one, but two islands. One island hosts the Wolf gas range while the other features an extended sitting area with a black Cosentino countertop and caramel leather swivel stools with chrome bases. The Italian wood veneer bases accent the islands’ white quartz countertops, which match the rest of the kitchen countertops. The same white quartz was also used for the backsplash that blends nicely with the white high gloss Italian cabinets that house the Sub-Zero appliances and the 100-bottle wine fridge. LI VI NG ROOM

W A linear fireplace framed in marble is the centerpiece of the great room.

hen interior designer Susan Lachance received a commission to remodel a home in the St. Andrews Country Club neighborhood in Boca Raton, the goal was to transform the tired, dated dĂŠcor into a bright, welcoming, modern look. The client, a single empty-nester, also wanted the design to incorporate timeless, lasting elements. The redesign of the four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath home with approximately 4,400 square feet of living space began with gutting most of the interior. Walls were removed, and the dated, vaulted ceilings were dropped for a modern feel. Flooring in the main living areas and master bedroom is creamy porcelain tile in a satin finish, providing a warm, neutral backdrop for furnishings. A fresh, neutral color palette with aqua, orange, fuchsia and yellow to brighten the living spaces. Large-scale artwork throughout the home create stunning visual focal points, while a mix of metals used in light fixtures, furnishings and accessories add another layer of color.

E AR LY BEG INNING S Lachance began her career working with her father, a builder, and had planned to become an architect. When she was offered a job with a major design firm in Miami, however, she took it and never looked back. Later, she opened her design firm in Boca Raton and continues to love her work. “I like being able to be artistic,” she says. “I love using my talent to make other people happy.” A DRAMATIC ENTRY Dramatic, 10-foot double entry doors with stepped glass panes framed in walnut lead into the spacious foyer. Suspended from the ceiling are three Sputnik-style metal chandeliers—one gold, one black and one nickel—creating immediate visual interest. “Instead of a single fixture, I wanted to have three in different finishes at different heights to fill the space,” Lachance says. Two pedestals, one oil-rubbed bronze and the other black, support a marbletopped console table holding gold candlesticks and a globe-shaped metal sculpture that complements the chandeliers. A large, vibrantly colored painting invites conversation; and is one of several that Lachance procured for the home. T H E DI NING ROOM A short hallway leads to the dining room, where a stunning, floor-to-ceiling millwork constructed from rosewood, coupled with bronze and clear mirrors, gives a startling illusion of 3D diamonds. “It’s a transition between the front door and the great room, so it needed to be outstanding,” Lachance says. Mirrors open the space visually and reflect colors and objects in the room, while the wood adds warmth. The designer chose a graceful horizontal chandelier with bronze-colored glass globes because it doesn’t compete with the feature wall behind it. Beneath the chandelier is an oval-shaped walnut dining table that easily seats eight. Backs and seats of the matching walnut-framed chairs are upholstered in taupe velvet. On the opposite wall hangs a large, brightly colored abstract painting, which Lachance had created by Juan Carlos Collada to depict an interpretive version of a Manhattan skyline, the owner’s former

home. “It’s to remind her of Manhattan without the dreariness,” Lachance says. Beneath the painting, a walnut bench with a stainless accent ribbon is topped with a white leather cushion. A pedestal beside the bench holds a whimsical bust finished with blue automotive paint. T H E G RE AT ROOM Beyond the dining room is the great room, where sheer panels frame floor-toceiling windows that bring the outdoors in. Remote-controlled solar panels provide privacy and UV protection when they are desired. The centerpiece of the space is a sleek, linear electric fireplace framed

by a marble hearth, mantle and side panels. Medium-toned oak pilasters on both sides add architectural interest. The wall between them is clad from the fireplace mantle to the ceiling with polished slabs of taupe porcelain. When flickering flames in the fireplace aren’t enough to watch, there’s a large TV screen above. Facing the fireplace is a low-backed, Ushaped sectional upholstered in taupe velvet. “She wanted something really cozy,” Lachance says. A European-style swivel side chair has a high-gloss wood base and beige leather upholstery. “It’s very rich looking,” Lachance says. A cutout base adds aesthetic to a small table beside the chair, perfect for placing a glass of wine or cup of coffee. Beneath the seating group,

a taupe area rug defines the space and adds texture. On the opposite side of the room, a bar topped with marble that matches the fireplace surround provides a gathering place for friends and visiting family. The oak sides of the base match the fireplace pilasters, while the softly illuminated center is made of light-colored walnut. Swiveling stools have clean, contemporary stainless frames; seats and backs are upholstered in bone-white leather. A walnut table with a leather inset that matches the bar stools serves as a place for casual dining or a game of cards. Low-backed swivel chairs have stainless steel frames and tan leather seats and backs.

T H E KI TCHEN In the kitchen, large-scale stainless hardware adds interest to simple white cabinetry, and a dramatic mosaic glass tile backsplash in earth tones creates a visual focal point. Above the stove is a clean-lined stainless hood; countertops are Caesarstone. “All the countertops we do now are a form of quartz, because of durability and maintenance,” Lachance says. A couple of steps across from the white perimeter cabinetry is a walnut island. It holds a prep sink with a graceful, U-shaped polished chrome faucet, as well as additional counter space, creating an efficient work area. A whimsically glamorous painting is meant to conjure thoughts of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” On the other side of the kitchen is a peninsula breakfast bar with a walnut base, Caesarstone top and a sink with a faucet that matches the one on the prep sink. Stools with simple

stainless frames and bone leather upholstery complement the bar stools in the great room. Three pendant lights with white, egg-shaped glass globes are suspended from stainless cables, and the breakfast bar’s support wall holds a small TV screen. T H E M E D I A ROOM Dark, slate blue walls create the feeling of a hideaway in the media room, which also serves as a family room. “It’s not just for watching movies; it’s for everything,” Lachance says. Nonetheless, a sectional is comprised of motorized reclining theater seats upholstered in taupe leather. Above the sectional is an eyecatching painting of a swimmer. A dramatic cocktail table features a cracked glass top supported by wide, polished, curved stainless pillars; beige carpeting adds softness and texture.

T H E M AST E R S U I T E The master bedroom combines elegance with comfort. Lachance added visual interest to the wide ceiling by creating architectural tiers. Floor-to-ceiling window treatments are sheers paired with blackout shades hidden in cornices. An ice blue, wool shag area rug offers softness for bare feet. Custom-screened, textured wallpaper in tones of soft silver and white is a focal point behind the bed. The headboard and frame are a single piece, upholstered in off-white fabric. Ice blue satin and velvet pillows and a foot warmer dress the bed, while nightstands finished in bone lacquer hold crystal and chrome lamps crowned with white linen shades. Across from the bed is a white lacquer console table with a TV screen above it. Near the window is a gold-framed accent chair upholstered in pale gray chenille with a matching oval ottoman. The master bath has the look and feel of a luxury spa with white and gray slabs of Calacatta porcelain that cover the walls and feature Calacatta marble countertops. Polished nickel hardware accents white lacquer vanities. Behind them are mirrors with lighted frames, and a polished nickel and crystal chandelier with white linen shades hangs from the ceiling. An oval, free-standing tub invites relaxing soaks, and a frameless glass shower with a linear drain adds a glamorous touch.

THE G U E ST ROOM Gray walls, gray and beige carpeting and sheer draperies with a 30-inch gray hem create a soothing yet stylish feel in the guest bedroom. The bed frame and nightstands are washed gray oak; bone-colored linen shades crown glass bedside lamps. At the foot of the bed is a washed oak bench; its ensuite bath is done in complementary tones of gray. THE PAT I O Inlaid strips of green artificial turf separate and add color to the large patio covered in white porcelain tile. Fuchsia chairs flanking a dining table provide another bright pop. A seating area furnished with a washed gray, synthetic wicker sofa, glass-topped coffee table and chairs topped with white Sunbrella cushions and colorful accent pillows create the feel of an outdoor living room. A gray and white woven rug completes the look. What was once a dreary, dated décor has become a modern design with timeless elements that will last for many years to come. “I gave her a brand new house,” Lachance says. “She’s very proud of it.”

hen an interior designer accepts a commission before a home is constructed, he or she assumes the role of an artist, like beginning a painting on a brand new, never-before-used canvas. It’s the kind of challenge Eloise Kubli, owner of Collective Construction and Design in Plantation, enjoys most. When she was asked to design the interior of a two-story waterfront home that was to be built in the Las Olas Isles, she was excited about the possibilities. “I was able to work with both the architect and the builder to design the home from the ground up,” she says. “It’s my favorite kind of project.” The 8,000-square-foot structure by builder Danny Minkin and architect Randall Stofft has five bedrooms and seven baths. The owners—a professional couple with two teenage boys still at home, a daughter recently off to college and two dogs—wanted a home that was comfortable yet stylish, good for easy entertaining and of course, pet-friendly. Kubli chose a color palette of whites, grays and ivories mixed with bronzes, antique golds and satin nickel metallics. Flooring in most of the main living areas is a durable porcelain tile that perfectly mimics wood.

T H E F OYER A 22-foot ceiling and an elegant staircase create instant visual drama in the foyer. Instead of the faux wood porcelain tile in other rooms, flooring is custom, laser-cut Calcutta marble with stainless steel insets. “I wanted to define the large space and create a sense of arrival,” Kubli says. Beveled mirrors framed in white molding cover one wall and reflect the staircase, which has dark walnut steps, risers painted a sharply contrasting white and a wrought iron railing. A collection of crystal bubbles framed in silver leaf forms the large chandelier. T H E L I VING ROOM The entry to a transitional space leading from the foyer to the living room is bordered in walnut, and walls are clad with marble illuminated from the floor. In the living room, maple beams with a dark finish add visual interest to the ceiling. Gray silk side panels frame floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and above them, a gray, linen-wrapped cornice hides motorized shades. A two-sided linear gas fireplace that opens to both the living room and club room has a gray-veined quartzite surround. Venetian plaster adds texture to the wall above, and suspended from the ceiling is a large chandelier with elongated crystals and a washed gold frame. On the floor, a wool rug in tones of blue, gray and white adds softness and texture. A sofa and loveseat upholstered in iridescent gray cotton have maple legs with a charcoal finish. Gray Ultrasuede covers two swivel chairs; between them is a circular metal drink table with an anthracite finish. The rectangular cocktail table has a blackened steel base, and the driftwood-finished oak top looks as if it’s floating. Side tables have complementary oak tops and steel bases. DI NI NG ROOM In the dining room, a recessed wall holds a dozen small paintings from the owners’ personal collection. LEDs illuminate them from above, while beneath them is a maple buffet detailed with bronze corners and pulls. Stationary gray silk side panels with European pleats frame the window, and woven gray sheers between them filter sunlight. Two angular bronze bases support the dining table’s distressed oak top.

Chairs have maple frames with a highgloss, lacquered finish and bronze striated detailing. Buttonless biscuit tufting on the backs of the chairs adds interest to dove gray upholstery, and a stunning, oval-shaped chandelier with a bronzeand-gold frame and antiqued mirrored panels casts a romantic glow.

T H E KI TCHEN A white lacquer wet bar between the kitchen and dining room has a dark Caesarstone top with a one-sided waterfall edge. Floating shelves offer display space. In the kitchen work area, simple white Shaker-style cabinetry creates a clean, fresh look. On a focal wall, a U-shaped, gray maple surround frames the range and upper cabinets, while mirror bands the bottom of the white hood. On one side of the surround is the freezer; on the other is the refrigerator. Both are clad with white panels that match the cabinets. A textured white marble-and-glass backsplash is eye-catching. Countertops are dark Caesarstone. “I needed something to contrast with the white cabinetry and the floor,” Kubli says. The large island has a gray maple base. The double-waterfall-edged dark Caesarstone top

matches the perimeter counters and the wet bar, and maple-framed stools have dove-gray upholstery with the same buttonless biscuit tufting and bronze detailing as the dining room chairs. Illuminating the island are three handblown Murano glass pendants suspended above. The breakfast table features a distressed oak top with a charcoal finish and an open center seam. Chairs have open backs with frames covered in gray vinyl. A wrought-iron-and-channel-glass chandelier hangs above. The gray maple base of a wine storage cabinet matches the island. Above it, floating shelves suspended from the wall are illumined with recessed LEDs. The entrance to a transition space between the kitchen and living room mimics the one in the foyer: The entrance is framed in walnut, and walls lit from the floor are clad in marble.

An ice blue wool rug adds color and texture to the floor, and a cornice covered in casual striped linen hides motorized shades. Dark navy chenille with silvery accents covers a comfortable sofa and love seat, and antique brass ferrules protect the charcoal wood legs from wear. Two chairs upholstered in fog-gray linen swivel so a user can face the room or turn to enjoy the view of the Intracoastal Waterway. Completing the seating group is a gray velvet bench with brass stiletto legs. A two-tiered coffee table has a metal frame and a distressed, charcoal-toned wood top, while a drink table between the swivel chairs has slender, tapered metal legs that support a marble top holding a concrete lamp with a white drum shade.

T H E CLU B ROOM The sophisticated club room offers yet another place to relax or gather with friends. To create a cozy feel, walls are painted a darker gray than other parts of the house, and instead of faux wood porcelain tile, the floor is covered with soft, gray-and-white patterned, wall-towall carpet. A large, steel-blue sectional faces this side of the linear fireplace that is framed in dark, dramatic basalt honed volcanic stone slabs. Directly in front of the fireplace, a bench upholstered in gray leather and topped with a black velvet bolster offers a perfect spot for a closeup view of the flames. Cocktail and end tables have steel bases and oak tops with wire brush texturing. A lamp on the end table has an open, carved wood base finished in antique gold; at the other end of the room, a tilted floor lamp is likely to catch sec-

ond looks. Gold latticework accents the dark wood backs of two half-round side chairs, while between them, an asymmetrical bronze table adds an edgy feel. M U D ROOM AND CABA N A B AT H For a family with three kids and two dogs, a mudroom is a practical addition. White cabinetry and a bench topped with a contrasting dark cushion offer storage, and hooks provide a place to hang bags and hats. Friends and family members coming in from the pool or boat can change in the cabana bath, which has walls covered in gleaming LusterStone and a mirror framed with burnished silver leaf. The white quartz vanity top holds a sink made from natural stone; a wall-mounted faucet adds another sophisticated touch. THE LOFT A loft at the top of the staircase has a balcony overlooking the Intracoastal. Cork wallpaper is painted deep blue with underlying silver accents. On the floor, a wool rug in shades of gray, white and blue is a perfect complement. Curved crystal spikes outline the wrought iron perimeter of a dramatic, drumshaped chandelier. The front panels of a maple console table are made from crushed eggshells lacquered to a hard finish, and blue and white pillows brighten the gray Ultrasuede sectional. A maple cocktail table offers a place to set drinks or snacks, while an accent table is topped with petrified wood.

M AST E R S U I T E An elegant, beaded crystal chandelier hangs from a white tray ceiling in the master bedroom. Blackout fabric lines dark gray draperies framing windows that overlook the pool. The rug is soft gray, white and yellow. The bed, nightstands, side chairs and ottoman were among the furnishings the owners brought from their former home. Kubli dressed the bed, however, with embroidered fabric and a gray, white and yellow coverlet that complements the rug. Pearl LusterStone covers the walls of the master bath, which has a deep soaking tub and gray lacquer cabinets crowned with white marble. A delicate, skirted white vanity chair offers a place to do makeup, and a mosaic adds visual interest in the frameless shower. OU T D OORS On the covered patio, white vinyl sling chairs with gray aluminum frames surround a glass-topped table large enough for alfresco dinner parties. few months after HW Interiors’ owners and principles Lisa Hynes and Heather Weisz finished transforming their client’s Palm Beach Polo and Country Club home, they received some surprising news. “Someone literally rang their [client’s] doorbell and offered them a significant amount over what they had paid and renovated,” Hynes recalls. “So they sold it, fully

furnished and toothbrush-ready, took the profit and bought a half-acre of land they wanted to build on, and that’s the house in the Cypress Island community we’re talking about now.” Before embarking on the remodel, Hynes and Weisz, who hail from Connecticut and New York, respectively, had already established a social connection with their clients, Jen and Kevin Johnson, a couple

with four children between the ages of 5 and 17. “We ran in the same circles, our kids took dance classes together, so they knew what we did,” Hynes says. The six-month enhancement required myriad updates, including tearing down walls, modifying flooring and tossing out heavy wood finishes, an activity Weisz has dubbed “deTuscanizing.” Similar to Frankenstein’s molecular reawakening, a necessary injection of pared-down elegance gave each space a new lease on life. The Johnsons weren’t the only ones impressed with the sublime redesign. Once the subsequent owners had moved in, they commissioned the duo to realize a meditation room and complete a few additional projects upstairs. When it came time to discuss room schematics and mood boards for the new build on Cypress Island—a project that lasted nearly two years—they presented Jen with past works of their own and others to gauge the style and colors that tugged at her heartstrings. “At that point,” Hynes says, “she can say, ‘I’m not feeling this or I love it, just go run with it.’” She continues, “The reason we feel her projects come out so amazing is [because] she really has faith in us and trusts that what comes from Heather’s brain is going to be beautiful.” A full-time, stay-at-home mother, Jen warmed up to the idea of working in some of the same functionality and transitional style that had echoed through the couple’s former residence in Maidstone, but she had one caveat: with four growing children, the rooms needed to be kid-friendly. After they received the green light

to proceed, the design duo collaborated with the architect from Yellowfin Builders, a West Palm Beach-based firm specializing in custom equestrian homes, to bring the couple’s lakeside fantasy to life. The gently winding floor plan Weisz conceived takes full advantage of the lush, waterfront landscape and showcases a successive series of open and airy

spaces that make enticing gathering spots for the family and their guests. In the formal living room across from the foyer, Weisz mixed one-of-a-kind accouterments, such as a rare Turkish rug and a pair of vintage, reclaimed wood-carved doors mounted on acrylic that serve as cocktail tables, with more contemporary selections, like the Greco sofas in graphite from the Roberta Schilling Collection.

Equine photographs, shot in black and white by Holly Roesch, hang above in tribute to Wellington’s iconic horse culture while low-profile pieces, such as a tufted ottoman in pseudo-suede fabric, offer clean site lines of the wet edge swimming pool outside. At night, concrete fire bowls light up so “when you walk in through the front door and see the fire and pool, it’s very cool,” Hynes says.

Adjacent to the front door, a formal dining room stands ready for a bacchanal feast with a custom, black-stained, ash wood table that seats 12. Fibrous linen window treatments, embroidered in warm tones of taupe, brown and gray, display dark, oil-rubbed hardware and acrylic finials that reference the crystal in the wall sconces and Currey & Co. wrought-iron chandelier. Across the way, a wine room primped with a feature wall fashioned from custom-colored woods from the Jaime Beckwith Collection houses the couple’s favorite vintages. Sleek bayou acacia wood floors procured locally from a supplier in Wellington etch a path to the family room, a seismic space with a 35-foot footprint. “Since the outdoors are so lovely and they [clients] like to entertain and have tons of kids over swimming all the time, Heather had the idea to have two sectionals mirroring each other,” says Hynes, “so one kind of

looks outside at the beautiful landscaping, and the other faces the television.” Under Weisz’s gimlet watch, the ceiling beams were given gravitas and stained three times, flecked with gray and white paint and smoked out with a brush until they achieved the level of warmth she wanted. Two separate sets of oversized glass sliders blend the indoors with the outside, when opened, and lead to the pool area and an outdoor living space with a fireplace, televisions, seating, and an island kitchen. Staying in step with Jen’s vision for a bright, light-drenched kitchen that locks in plenty of functionality, Hynes and Weisz selected a color palette that wove in pops of navy in timeless shades. On the backsplash, 3D, geometric tiles bring a touch of edginess and complement the custom, Shaker-style cabinetry. Kid-friendly counter chairs with easy-to-wipe-clean leather hunker beneath one of two sapienstone island countertops.

To add an extra layer of convenience when the couple entertains or hosts out-of-towners, the space is endowed with a built-in breakfast bar complete with a panel-ready, under-counter ice machine, a second dishwasher and refrigerated drawers that store cold drinks and snacks. In the first-floor master bedroom, they created a luxurious, resort-inspired retreat where the Johnsons could escape to slumber and disconnect. Walls are covered in neutral gray grasscloth while pops of white in the linen drapes and the side chairs at the foot of the Bernhardt canopy bed pull the eye around the room and heavenward toward the intricate coffered ceiling. Hanging pendants free up space on the nightstands and switches located by the bed easily turn overhead lights on and off. Past the sliding glass doors lays another one of the home’s highlights. “Walk along the cast stone pavers floating in beautiful green Zoysia grass, and you’ll land straight into the Jacuzzi,” Weisz says. “My idea was the kids are upstairs playing, and mom and dad could sit in the Jacuzzi with a glass of Champagne and enjoy that view.” Past Jen’s makeup station, an extra spacious walk-in closet, and a small breakfast nook fitted with a small fridge and hanging shelves, a short hallway leads to the Carrara and Stratuario marble-imbued master bath. The sink, designed by Hynes and Weisz, is wrapped in a stainless steel veneer and fitted with acrylic handles, flab front drawers and a marble waterfall countertop edge. Three

different tiles form the back feature wall and a small-format mosaic adds texture to the wet floor in the shower. Toto smart toilets and rain and waterfall showerheads lend to the sumptuously well-appointed scene. On the second floor, where the children’s rooms are located, sits a large openconcept room at the top of the stairs. Conceived with the kids and overnight visitors in mind, the sunlight-dappled space harbors a sideboard with a table and chairs where anyone can work, paint or play cards. On the other, a comfy sitting area awaits with a linen and walnut wood sofa, a teak QS Le Main chair and a flatscreen television perfect for a movie or game night. “We definitely wanted everything to be more playful and whimsical here,” Heather says, deftly summing up the HW Interiors way.
