Answers for back pain Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center offers comprehensive care

ou bend to grab a piece of paper off the floor and a bolt of pain shoots from your back down your leg. With back and neck pain affecting 80 percent of Americans at some point in their life, it’s an all too common occurrence. But how do you know if the cause of your pain is something serious? The experts at Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center, a part of Baptist Health, suggest a comprehensive evaluation to get to the root of your problem, alleviate your pain and prevent long-term issues. Physiatrists — physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists — at the Center’s multiple locations deal with issues affecting the spinal cord, including problems with bones, joints, nerves, muscles and tendons. “We almost always isolate the issue, and with a proper diagnosis comes the proper treatment,” said Ronald Tolchin, D.O., medical director. Causes of back and neck pain include degenerative disc disease, arthritis, skeletal abnormalities, spinal stenosis, herniated discs and more. Even screen time and texting can throw the neck out of alignment. And with the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors are seeing an increase in back problems due to too much sitting,

not enough exercise, weight gain and working at makeshift home offices that lack chairs with lumbar support and armrests. The Center works with everyone from athletes to the elderly, and handles extremely complex cases. For some patients, an initial assessment is followed by imaging studies — an MRI or CT scan, for example — that reveal problems such as a narrowing of the spinal column, a bone spur pressing on a nerve, bulging discs or arthritis. Nerve conduction studies are performed on-site. The good news is that medical advances have made it possible for most patients to avoid surgery. “We have a whole armamentarium of noninvasive and holistic treatments available today,” Dr. Tolchin said. The Spine Center team may recommend stretching and physical therapy, anti-inflammatory and injectable medications, weight loss with an antiinflammatory diet and safe exercise. In addition to injections that are administered in the office, minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is performed at an outpatient location. RFA uses heat to disrupt the nerve tissue’s transmission of pain signals to the brain.
Epidural and facet joint injections are also handled on an outpatient basis. Some 90 percent of back and neck problems are improved with these noninvasive approaches. For the 10 percent who require surgery, the Center’s team works closely with the neurosurgeons at Miami Neuroscience Institute. “As a comprehensive spine center, not only do we look at you holistically and provide many services in one location,” Dr. Tolchin said, “but I can literally walk down the hall to any of my neurosurgical colleagues, pull up images and discuss a patient.” Follow-up with back and neck pain patients is also important, according to Dr. Tolchin. “We don’t just treat you and say, ‘See you in five years.’ For some patients, the condition can be chronic. We’re a place where they can find salvation, and we will help them get through it.”

Mindful Mani is a Black-owned nail concept by Lauren Johnson that merges conscious beauty practices and innovative design.

Five years ago, Lauren Johnson dreamt up the idea to open a nail salon, but not just any nail salon—this one, she says, would specialize in curating “unique, innovative, and mindful experiences.” Her dream came true in July 2019 with the launch of Mindful Mani in Plantation. There, she merges conscious beauty practices and innovative design. Like most business owners, she was forced to shift gears during the pandemic and began making gel-removal kits and at-home manicure and pedicure kits for people stuck at home without their weekly manicures. “Creative juices started flowing, and the idea of a nude polish line came
to mind,” shares Johnson. She spent the summer working to conceptualize and create the colors for the collection, aptly named Notably Nude, which officially launched last fall. The collection features 12 shades of inclusive, go-to nudes that are cruelty-free and non-toxic. The shades are inspired and named after the notable women in her life who she says played an integral role in her growth. Two shades go further by raising awareness— proceeds from BE are donated to advance the work of mental health through her mom’s practice, Mental Health Matters, and the shade Layla was inspired by her niece diagnosed with autism, with proceeds benefiting The Color of Autism Foundation. BEER Pioneer
Frances Antonio-Martineau brings a whole lot of NEWNESS to her signature FemAle Brew Fest A self-described craft beer lover, Frances Antonio-Martineau often noted how women were underrepresented at the local breweries and festivals she frequented. In 2016, she launched the Fem Collective, an empowerment group in South Florida intended to bring other women entrepreneurs together to network; a year later, she came up with a way to incorporate beer into that realm. The result: FemAle Brew Fest. She launched the festival in May 2017 at a warehouse in FatVillage, showcasing a diverse group of women in the industry. “It’s a festival that inspires and empowers women that may be interested in learning more about getting into the industry or just learning more about beer,” notes Antonio-Martineau. “Some people say, ‘Who cares who’s making the beer?’ No, it doesn’t matter—good beer is good beer. The point is to highlight these badass women who are making these delicious beers.”
The outpouring of local support was enormous; in the following years, she hosted the event at Huizenga Plaza and Gulfstream Park, but pressed pause on her 2020 plans due to social distancing guidelines. This year, however, she’s ready to welcome local brewsters for an exceptional time. This year’s event will take place September 18 at The Kimpton Goodland Hotel Fort Lauderdale Beach. Brewers and experts from around the world will be on hand to offer insight, and there will also be vendors, bands, special tastings, and new offerings such as a beer and yoga class. Can’t-miss happenings include fermentation diversity workshops, a Hop Sensory course with Yakima Chief Hops, a book signing with Tara Nurin featuring her newly released A Woman’s Place Is in the Brewhouse: A Forgotten History of Alewives, Brewsters, Witches, and CEOs, and a brew created by Antonio-Martineau in collaboration with Yeasty Brews in Lauderhill. LEIS FOR A CAUSE For Tua Tagovailoa, wearing a lei is no mere accessory—the decorative accent bears great significance to his culture. “It can represent peace, love, honor, or friendship,” shares the 23-year-old Miami Dolphins quarterback. Leis have often been given to Tagovailoa by his parents after a big win or as a sign of support throughout his football career. Now, he’s partnering with Aventura-based South Florals (southflorals.com) to launch TUA Leis, with proceeds benefiting his namesake Tua Foundation. Established in February, the foundation’s mission is to make a meaningful impact in support of those in need, especially kids. “Helping others is a tenet of my faith and who I am,” he says. The foundation focuses on charitable endeavors in South Florida, Alabama, and Hawaii—the areas Tagovailoa says have “greatly impacted” his life. “These communities have helped to mold me, and I want to give back and help kids

Fans of live performances can applaud the return of The Parker, which reopens this month in Fort Lauderdale. Besides its name change (formerly the Parker Playhouse), the theater will feature new guest experiences—including the Linda B. Haller Club, an all-new lounge outfitted in a retro design complete with a spacious bar and ample seating—and a lineup of not-to-miss artists for the 2021-2022 season. “While we’ve shortened the name, updated the facility, and upgraded the experience to cater to today’s audiences, the reimagined Parker is a love letter that pays tribute to the iconic venue we have come to treasure for more than half a century,” shares Broward Center president and CEO Kelley Shanley. We view our homes as our sanctuaries, our sacred spaces in which we take pride. We like to keep them clean, organized, and decorated to our liking. What we don’t realize is that within that sacred space hide, on average, 62 different toxic chemicals. The products we use to wipe our countertops and clean our toilet bowls fill the air in our homes with toxins, irritants, and carcinogens that could be contributing to many of our health issues. We do the same with our own bodies—from the pans we use to cook our food to soap and deodorant. It is said that the average woman uses 12 different personal care products per day and the average man uses 6 per day; in the 12 products that women use hide 168 different chemicals (85 in the men’s products). What’s even more alarming is that 80 percent of these chemicals aren’t even tested before they hit shelves. These chemicals and pollutants are inhaled and/or absorbed through the skin and, once inside the body, Infrared saunas can help your body release toxins from the liver, intestines, and kidneys.

Maybe go for a spa day, too—infrared saunas can help release toxins from the liver, intestines, and kidneys, and lymphatic drainage massages aid the body in its natural detoxification process.

Grilled Steak with Roasted Beets, Sautéed Beet Greens, and Fresh Watercress SERVES 2

STEAK 1 lb. grass-fed organic beef (New York strip, skirt steak, or any cut of your choice) 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 minced or grated garlic clove Salt and pepper
STEAK Pat steak dry and rub with olive oil, minced garlic, and salt and pepper. Using a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat, grill steak for 6 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and allow to rest for 5 minutes.
BEETS 3-4 red beets 1 tbsp. olive oil Pinch of sea salt 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar + 1/8 tsp. or drop of honey, whisked together BEET GREENS Greens and stems from beets 2 tbsp. olive oil 1 minced garlic clove 2 tbsp. lemon juice (1/2 lemon) OTHER 1 cup watercress 1/4 cup fresh parsley 1/4 cup fresh cilantro

BEETS Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut beet greens and stems from beets and wash thoroughly using a salad spinner. Under cold water, brush beets gently with a brush. Place whole beets on a parchment-lined stainless steel baking sheet. Drizzle beets with 1 tablespoon olive oil and a pinch of sea salt, then bake for 45 minutes. Allow beets to cool for 15 minutes before gently rubbing the skin off; cube beets and toss with balsamic vinegar and honey. Set aside. BEET GREENS In a cast iron pan, heat olive oil over high to medium heat. Add in chopped beet greens and sauté for 5 minutes. Add garlic and sauté for 2 additional minutes. Finish with lemon juice.

Arrange everything on a large platter, beginning with a bed of watercress, beet greens, and cubed beets. Slice steak and add to platter. Garnish with fresh parsley and cilantro.
Chlorophyll Lemonade » INGREDIENTS 1 tsp. chlorophyll liquid 2 tbsp. lemon juice (1/2 lemon) 8 oz. purified filtered water Drop of honey (optional)
Stir all ingredients together and serve in a glass garnished with a slice of lemon.

Far less known is the equally impressive ecological splendor—and extraordinary conservation efforts—of this small country in the Himalayas. Near Nepal’s southern border with India, Chitwan National Park stands proud as a refuge for Asia’s greater one-horned rhinoceros, one of three extant rhinoceros species found on the continent. chance to prevent rhinos from disappearing entirely from the continent. Historically, this species’ habitat covered the entire northern part of the Indian subcontinent. After skirting extinction at the turn of the twentieth century due to hunting and human–wildlife conflicts, fledgling laws helped protect the remaining 200 individuals. Numbers hovered at dangerously low levels until more serious conservation action in the early 1970s, including the declaration of prime rhino real estate at Nepal’s first national park, Chitwan National Park, with an elaborate network of guard posts to protect wildlife. The park’s boundaries were expanded in 1977 and these jungle-filled lowlands were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Staunch protection and iron-fisted management by wildlife authorities in Nepal 34
and neighboring India achieved the impossible: By 2017, over 3,500 one-horned rhinos roamed grasslands around the Nepal-India border, with more than 600 in Chitwan. Safeguarding the rhino and its habitat of waving elephant grass and soaring Sal trees came with a bonus: Chitwan blossomed into a sanctuary for other beauties of the animal kingdom, from Bengal tigers, leopards, elephants, langurs, and gharials to some 540 species of birds, including the highly photogenic peacock and the critically endangered Bengal florican. This trailblazing park also caught the attention of esteemed Taj Safaris (tajhotels.com/taj-safaris), which had pioneered a luxury tiger safari circuit in India. The brand felt the time was right to expose its clientele to the rare experience of trekking the elusive one-horned rhino—and its Jungle Book companions—in the forested lowlands of southern Nepal. In 2016 they debuted the 30-room Meghauli Serai, A Taj Safari, comprising a 13-unit safari lodge, 16 stand-alone villas, and a Rapti Mahal suite along the banks of the Rapti River. A Palm Beach LANDMARK is transformed into a design icon for a new generation By Daphne Nikolopoulos
The fourstory White Elephant Palm Beach features a neutral design palette accented by 120 original pieces of pop and modern art.

Since opening its doors in late 2020, the White Elephant Palm Beach has become a modern classic. It’s not because of its hip vibe or design-forward aesthetic, but rather because it honors a significant part of Palm Beach heritage even as it reimagines it for a new era. Before it was acquired by New England Development, the 1924-built property—originally a landmarked hotel servicing Colonel E.R. Bradley’s gambling casino—was an aging architectural gem. NED chairman (and part-time Palm Beacher) Stephen Karp saw potential in its terraces, arcades, and outdoor staircases and immediately envisioned the sister hotel to NED’s White Elephant Nantucket. Elkus Manfredi Architects, specialists in restoring historic properties, transformed the original Mediterranean Revival structure into a 32-key boutique
hotel with a residential feeling, down to the thoughtfully curated art. Though the architecture is classic, it feels anything but dated thanks to a host of contemporary counterpoints. Elevated materials like metals, Carrara marble, and hardwood floors are interpreted with a fresh eye. Furnishings are sleek and modern. The highlight is the art collection, consisting of 120 original pieces of pop and modern art. The most monumental, a 7-foot white elephant statue by Santa Fe artist Fredrick Prescott, greets guests outside the main entry. In the lobby, a 54-inch round acrylic painting by Orit Fuchs commands attention and draws the eye to the rest of the collection, which includes works by Japanese-American painter Kenzo Okada, New York artist Donald Baechler, legendary painter Robert Rauschenberg, and others. Of note are the powder room sketches by Doodle Boy, a 10-year-old British artist who created the drawings with marker, incorporating a hidden elephant in each.

Aston Martin’s first SUV, the dynamic DBX, puts the sport in sport utility By Howard Walker There’ll come a time when Bond, James Bond, will hand back the Walther PPK, the MI6-issued Omega Seamaster, and the license to kill. He’ll get hitched, settle down, and no doubt have a couple of rug rats with Miss Moneypenny. The current 007, Daniel Craig, is 53, for goodness’ sake. Arthritis and AARP are just around the corner. Of course, with matrimonial bliss will come spatial needs. It’s no good rushing around in a classic ’60s two-seater—even one with machine guns and ejector seats—when there are baby seats to fit and IKEA flat packs to lug home. Taking it as a given that Bond will always drive an Aston Martin, the company has thankfully seen his dilemma and come up with the perfect new Bondmobile: the 2021 DBX (an SUV, no less). But this is not your typical sport-ute. Here is
arguably the sportiest, most agile, most dynamic loadhauling 4x4 out there—one sure to leave even 007 both shaken and stirred. It’s also arguably the most gorgeous SUV money, or even Moneypenny, can buy. With that trademark front grille, practically a carbon copy of the one on Bond’s much-loved 1964 DB5, it’s unmistakably an Aston. I love the swept-back windshield and swoopy roofline. I love that curvy, bulging hood which, I reckon, used Daniel Craig’s sixpack abs, showcased in Casino Royale, for design inspiration. Plus, it’s comforting to know that much of the DBX’s key technology comes courtesy of Mercedes-Benz. (Heck, even Aston’s new CEO, Tobias Moers, was formerly boss of Mercedes-AMG.) Pop that curvy hood
to see the fruits of the Aston-Mercedes partnership: Powering this new DBX is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that does duty in a bevy of Benzes, along with the Aston DB11 and Vantage. It’s been massaged by Aston to better suit SUV duty, cranking out an impressive 542-horsepower and muscley 516 poundfeet of torque. Mated to a Mercedes-sourced nine-speed automatic and rear-wheel-biased all-wheel drive, the DBX can scoot from standstill to 60 in just 4.3 seconds. But instead of borrowing a 4x4 platform from Mercedes, the company developed an all-new one for the DBX—an I-beam-stiff concoction of glued and riveted aluminum.

And it drives like a dream. Naturally, it’s quick—dial up sport mode and it will barrel away from a stoplight like a rock out of a catapult—but it’s not the hard-edged, blunt instrument it could have been. The snap, crackle, and pop exhaust is there, but it’s subdued, less vocal. In place of hard-riding sports suspension, the DBX features threechamber air springs for a smoother, silkier ride. They can even do double-duty, raising the body to wade through waist-deep water. Still, what will stagger you is the sheer agility when you start powering the DBX through curves. With an electronic antiroll system quelling just about any body roll, and the kind of precise, well weighted steering that feels hard-wired to your brain, it’s an SUV that thinks it’s a nimble sportscar. Inside, the Aston’s cabin is a joyous place to experience all this action. Most surfaces are slathered in buttery-soft Bridge of Weir leather with gorgeous double stitching. Pardo goes BIG
The Italian builder best known for sleek and slender day boats adds a stunning new FLAGSHIP CRUISER to its lineup By Howard Walker For our French lesson of the day, consider the phrase “en plein air.” Translated, it means “out of doors.” But it was also a term used to describe the practice adopted by Impressionist artists of painting from start to finish outside. Of course, there are always those who take en plein air to the extreme—like nineteenthcentury British painter Stanhope Forbes, who was reportedly photographed painting during a gale, his easel tethered down by ropes. Strange, then, that Italian boatbuilder Pardo Yachts should use a French phrase to describe the feeling you get stepping aboard their stunning new flagship cruiser, the Pardo Endurance 60; all’aria aperta sounds just as good. Either way, both phrases describe the way this sleek, ax-bowed 60-footer can transform its main salon into a magical open-air solarium at the mere touch of a few buttons. 42
Press one to power down the huge, darktinted salon side windows. Press two to open the full-width concertina-style doors to the aft deck. Press three to power down the vast side sections of the hull to almost double the width of the rear teak-decked cockpit. With everything open, it creates the coolest beach club this side of Saint-Tropez. En plein air, indeed. Founded in 1973, Cantiere del Pardo—based in the town of Forlì near Italy’s Adriatic coast— has been building a lineup of Grand Soleil performance sailboats. They’ve built more than 4,500 to date. But it was in 2017 that the yard really got into its stride with a switch to turning out walk-around, center-console, go-fast day boats. The Pardo 43 was followed by the Pardo 50 in 2018 and the Pardo 38 last year. But it seems existing Pardo owners wanted something bigger to spend more time aboard
with friends and families. The result is the spectacular Endurance 60, which makes its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival this month. The hull is from the drawing board of Swiss naval architect Davide Leone with an interior by Milan-based Nauta Design. As with Pardo’s day boats, the 60 sticks with that trademark reverse bow, the pop-out anchor cradle, and high bulwarks capped with teak. Add to that a pair of huge hull windows on each side and that distinctive big-windowed cabin with fullwidth, angled-back forward window and curvy roof design. On top of it all, there’s a spacious, low-profile flybridge with loungers galore. Just gazing at the deck, it feels like every inch has been maximized to provide the most usable space—from big foredeck sun pads to massive side decks to the vast cockpit with room for a table for six. As for those fold-down

Inside, the salon layout is equally bright, breezy, and open. Placing the galley right by the cockpit with all those opening windows makes entertaining (and keeping the frosty rosé flowing) a literal breeze. Forward in the salon is a big comfy sofa and high-low table, along with the indoor helm to starboard.
Below deck there are three en suite staterooms with a full-width master midship, a forward VIP that can be a double or V-berth, and a third cabin with two singles. They’ve even managed to squeeze in generous crew quarters. Part of this spaciousness is down to equipping the 60 with twin Volvo IPS drives way back at the stern. Take your pick from 550-horsepower IPS 700s or 625-horsepower IPS 800s, but according to Pardo, the 800s
should give a top speed of 25 knots and an easy 20-knot cruising speed. Throttle back to 10 knots and it should average 10.5 gallons an hour with a range of around 700 miles. Zach Germain, of Naples-based Pardo distributor Germain Yachts (that’s Naples, Florida, not the Italian one), says the first Endurance 60s in the United States should arrive before the end of the year, with a nicely loaded version priced around $2.5 million. There’s another French phrase, in addition to en plein air, that I think perfectly describes this exquisite new Pardo—magnifique! «

THE CULINARY TRAILBLAZER You’ve likely heard of rock star Rino Cerbone or tried to snag a reservation at his alwaysbooked Italian eatery, Heritage, in the Mass District. He’s quite the shapeshifter. Before opening up shop last year, Cerbone lived a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle as the front man of Stellar Revival and Westview and has even opened for Bon Jovi. He eventually returned to his Fort Lauderdale roots to pursue his passion of becoming a restaurateur, like his Italian immigrant family. The result is his industrial-meets-modern-chic outpost, which opened before the onset of the pandemic. The same East-meets-West coast vibes you’ll find inside Heritage are reflected in Cerbone’s style. “Fashion influence for me would be a cross between Ryan Gosling, David Beckham, Adam Levine, and Johnny Depp,” shares the 36-year-old chef/owner. “The reason for this is because they all have a rugged style, but when they clean up, they have a very sleek European flair to their style, which I’m into.” When not in a chef’s coat, Cerbone says he’s likely wearing “a pair of jeans, rad boots, and a shirt with either a really cool jacket or overshirt.” He exudes honest confidence, noting that if he ever wanted to switch up his wardrobe and try a new trend, he would pursue it. Personal style: Rock ‘n’ roll chic. Very NYC/ LA vibe. Label he loves: All Saints. Favorite under-theradar brand: Taft Boots. [They’re] a husband-and-wife team that makes an incredible product. As the beverage director for Big Time Hospitality Group, he manages all aspects of education and development. “I pick all wines and develop all cocktails ensuring the amazing dishes we develop in the kitchen have the proper pairing at the bar,” says the 33-year-old, who has spent his career honing his craft as a revered sommelier and entrepreneur. Aside from his local talents, he’s the CEO of Prosecco Zero, an ingenious new line of low-sugar rosé and brut wines produced in partnership with Peninsula Wines, one of Italy’s most celebrated winemakers. A close friend of Salvatore Ferragamo, Machado says he’d love to raid his closet for obvious reasons—and because Ferragamo hides his wines from the Il Borro vineyards inside. When he’s not dressed to the nines at work, Machado is at peace outdoors and in casual clothes. “I love the water, so anything ocean or pool-related I’m in,” he says. THE ARTS ADVOCATE If you ask Phillip Dunlap about the inspiration behind his wardrobe, he’ll tell you it’s fueled by his passion for jazz. “[Jazz musicians] were—and still are—some of the most stylish folks out there,” says the 40-year-old who currently helms the Broward County Cultural Division as director. He pulls inspiration from the likes of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Tim Warfield into his ensembles consisting of blazers, signature pocket squares, and an envious collection of eyeglasses. His connection to the musical genre isn’t at random; he’s lived a life engulfed in music for years. Before moving to South Florida a little over two years ago, he served as the director of education and community engagement at Jazz St. Louis. He was also the president of Missouri Citizens for the Arts, a university professor, and a jazz pianist who often played weekly gigs. “I hope to get back to it sometime soon, because I miss being on the bandstand,” he says. As Broward’s top arts official, Dunlap handles everything from public art to grant-making programs to community engagement while working to build cultural infrastructure, create public awareness, and improve capacity and learning, “so that our arts and culture organizations and artists are effective businesses and entrepreneurs,” he says. To date, Dunlap has led an overhaul of the division’s annual grant-making program, which included a complete repeal and replacement of the administrative code. Personal style: Classic with a pop of modern Owns a lot of: Blazers. At one point, my friends would joke that I must sleep in blazers. THE ENTERTAINER From Dale McLean’s early days attending the University of Miami to emceeing and hosting weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and charity events, he’s a household name in South Florida’s entertainment industry. His unparalleled experience and natural hype man talents led him to become “scouted” for the role of in-arena host for the Miami Heat, where he’s been entertaining guests on the upper deck to celebs sitting courtside since 2006. He’s also an on-the-field and court host for the Miami Hurricanes. The passion and creativity that go into his work translate well to his dynamic wardrobe. Not afraid to make a statement, McLean describes his look as “stylish yet unique,” which is apparent in the looks he puts together on and off the court. “I always like to look my best yet different from others,” he says. “I’m not a ‘black T-shirt and black jeans’ kind of guy. She took back her power when she revealed her own sexual abuse as a child. Now State Senator LAUREN BOOK is working to provide that same power—and protection—to Florida’s youngest citizens. B Y PAIG E B OWE RS
tate Senator Lauren Book (D-Plantation) was horrified when she learned that Michael Mizrachy, a pediatrician in her home district, had been arrested on child pornography charges this past spring. But when Mizrachy sought to treat children via telemedicine, Book decided that his plans could not— and should not—come to pass. After all, her constituents brought their children to this man. And she brought her twins to him too. For Book, this was a matter of abused public trust, and she was going to hold Mizrachy—and other doctors like him—accountable for their misdeeds. Immediately, she filed Senate Bill 1934, which would suspend the license of any physician charged with sex crimes against children or possession of child pornography from seeing patients. Book’s bill passed both houses; at press time, it was awaiting Governor Ron De Santis’ signature. “The mechanism to remove a medical license is terrible in this state,” Book says. “There was a doctor prescribing opioids from his jail cell because he was still in good standing. And this pediatrician wants to see kids by telemedicine? If I weren’t a part of the legislative process, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do this. If a child is in danger of being hurt, I am always going to do what I can to help and protect them.” Book’s passion for championing the rights of women and children is born out of her own life experience. She is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, suffered at the hands of her family’s female nanny, but she says that experience has made her the person, mother, and fiery advocate she is today. A creator of mosaics—both in her life’s work and as a hobby— the 36-year-old has become adept at taking broken pieces and reassembling them into something more beautiful than they were before. Underestimate her at your own peril.

State Senator Lauren Book is an internationally respected and renowned child advocate, former classroom teacher, bestselling author, and founder of Lauren’s Kids, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation.
The oldest of three children, Book grew up in the Aventura area in a household that she says was every bit as dysfunctional as it was focused on making a difference. While she doesn’t speak to the specifics of that dysfunction (it’s all spelled out in her memoir It’s Okay To Tell), she will say that the most important thing she learned from her father, famed lobbyist Ron Book, is the importance of helping others. “Sometimes I can still see Lauren as a little girl, peering into a jar with a butterfly in it,” Mr. Book says. “As a child, she was sweet, kind, creative, focused, determined, and wanting to make a difference in the world.” Book’s nanny began sexually abusing her when she was 11 years old. As she kept quiet about the abuse, she poured her energies into creating goodie bags for children at local hospitals, serving food to the homeless at holidays, and raising thousands of dollars for Rwandan genocide survivors. Book didn’t want other people to feel helpless, scared, and alone, but it took some time before she could be open about why she felt that way too. She finally told her family about the abuse in August 2001. She was 16 years old. “The day I disclosed [my abuse], it was like an atom bomb exploded in my house,” she recalls. “There were no limbs, no zombies, no holes in the floor. But my mom didn’t know whether she was supposed to touch or hug me. My parents blamed themselves. While sexual abuse happens to one individual, it affects the entire family dynamic. Things will never be the same, no matter how hard you try.” What followed was a process of healing that led Book to where she is today. In 2002, she successfully fought for a law that allowed victims of sexual assault to get their abuser’s HIV and AIDS test results. She then earned an elementary education and creative writing degree at the University of Miami, before becoming a classroom teacher. Although she loved teaching, she felt that the educational system wasn’t serving kids as much as it could. Her father told her to run for school board, but Book had other ideas. In 2007, she founded Lauren’s Kids, a 501(c) (3) that educates adults and children about sexual abuse prevention through in-school curriculum, family resources, awareness campaigns, and speaking engagements around the country and throughout the world. The organization’s Safer, 54
Smarter Schools program is currently used in K-12 classrooms in 37 states to teach children about personal safety. It also holds an annual 1,500-mile walk from Key West to Tallahassee called “Walk in My Shoes” to raise awareness for childhood sexual abuse. Through its education and advocacy, Lauren’s Kids has pushed for the passage of almost two-dozen laws to support survivors and protect children from predators. On election night in 2010, Lauren met Blair Byrnes, who was director of technology for Rick Scott’s gubernatorial campaign. Byrnes had a date that night, but says he was instantly smitten with Book, who was “the most accomplished woman I had ever met.” They talked (and talked some more), and began dating. They married in 2015; the following year she became a state senator and an expectant mother of twins. Two weeks after she gave birth, Book headed to Tallahassee, twins in tow, to begin the legislative session. Because her father cast a large shadow, Book felt she had to work to prove she was there on her own merits. People asked her whether she wore glasses to look smarter, and were surprised to find out that she was not, in fact, a dumb blonde. “I was trying to be my own woman and forge my own path,” she says. “I knew I had to work eight times harder to prove myself, because people believed—and maybe still do believe—that I got there because of my father. I woke up every day trying to prove those people wrong and to

prove I deserved to be there.” Her father know what people were saying; he stresses that he has always tried to stay out of his daughter’s way. “I know how people see lobbyists, but I will not as a businessman and a lawyer get in Lauren’s way,” he says, emphatically. “I will sit on the sidelines and watch her do what she needs to do.” As Book tried to step out from behind her father’s shadow, she also struggled with new motherhood. It was postpartum depression, and Book recognized she needed to get help “right away.” Friends, family, and staff say she got through the period through sheer force of will, setting up a toy-laden nursery in her office. Her path was different from most legislators, but she says it has led to good legislation such as child safety measures, paid leave after stillbirths, and expansion of Medicaid for postpartum care. “The thing with Lauren is that if it’s easy, she’s not interested in doing it,” says Byrnes. She wants to move mountains, not kick over anthills.

And she does. She’s tenacious. When there is an issue that she sees needs to be fixed, she becomes committed to understanding that situation or issue to the fullest extent possible.” For example, after the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Byrnes said Book read the 911 transcripts and all the police reports and watched the footage “over and over and over again.” Byrnes thinks she gets this from her father, who believes that in order to be effective, you have to understand a person’s problem better than they do themselves. She served on a statewide commission to analyze the causes of the attack and prepare against future tragedies, and ultimately voted against the NRA to provide what Book calls “the most meaningful gun safety legislation in Florida in decades.” It was what her constituents wanted. This past April, Book’s colleagues elected her to lead Florida Senate’s Democrats through 2024. It’s the first time the chamber will be led by two women, and a signifier of Book’s clout within the state party. Because of statewide redistricting, Book will also be vying for another term in the fall of 2022. For now, she said she is focused on good policy, especially in the child welfare realm. The global pandemic has only reinforced the need to keep children safe, as many who were being abused took part in virtual schooling at home, which was the source of the trouble. Good policy takes time, commitment, and creativity and Book is focused on that. “I have always had a servant’s heart,” she says. “And I will never turn down an opportunity to serve the people of the state I love.” « FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2021

Hospitality maven Memphis Garrett dishes on his latest culinary concepts You might not know Memphis Garrett, but you’ve certainly visited one of his many foodie outposts around Fort Lauderdale. Have you sipped a creative cocktail at the swanky Sparrow perched atop The Dalmar? Ordered Pipeline Nachos from The Poke House? Garrett is behind those concepts and more. He’s launched nearly 44 restaurants and nightclubs since beginning his career in 2008, following his debut on the CBS competition Big Brother, where he placed as runner-up. He says the experience led him to find his passion in the hospitality world. By the end of the year, he’s on track to have 13 concepts under his belt in South Florida alone, and he isn’t done yet. Since wrapping on filming Big Brother: All-Stars during the pandemic, he’s conceptualized two new dining and entertainment venues in Fort Lauderdale: His fast-casual Poke House is transitioning into a cocktail lounge and eatery called No Man’s Land and will offer imaginative cocktails and bites like beef carpaccio and hamachi crudo. “The way people are dining is changing,” says Garrett, who reassures poke lovers they will still be able to order their favorites from the location for pickup or delivery (a ghost-kitchen concept called Blue Wave Sushi will also operate out of the space, with a menu of bento boxes and sushi). “I wanted to create a place where you would forget about what is going on anywhere else,” he says of No Man’s Land. “A space where the service and the vibe make you not want to leave.” Next, Garrett plans to open a West Palm Beach Poke House and Blue Wave Sushi, followed by a location in Plantation. “This is my home and I want to make sure that the majority of my venues are here,” he says. Good news for Cuban food lovers in South Florida: Cuba Libre opened its doors this spring on Las Olas and has all the perks of authentic island cuisine without crossing international borders. The new 9,200-squarefoot restaurant transports diners to the Old Havana district via distinctive street-architecture elements. Two-time James Beard Award-winning chef/owner Guillermo Pernot began working for Cuba Libre nearly 15 years ago, when the first location opened in Philadelphia, and has since developed the food and beverage concept. “Cuba Libre serves today’s Cuban cuisine, a mix of robust and soul-satisfying, flavorful dishes that reflect Cuba’s culinary traditions and emerging modern cuisine,” shares Pernot. ONE WITH NATURE An old digital camera and a couple of lenses left in a drawer at work led Kirk Englehardt to discover a newfound passion for photography. The vice president of marketing and communication at the Community Foundation of Broward says he took the camera home, cleaned it up, and learned how to use it in his free time. “I watched YouTube videos about photography, listened to online photography classes during my morning and afternoon commute, and started shooting pictures—lots of them,” he recalls. He eventually bought a new camera, which became his constant companion on his daily walks during the pandemic. “I felt like an urban explorer trying to uncover the mysteries of my neighborhood,” says Englehardt. What he found, he says, were “many beautiful spaces and lots of interesting wildlife living among us.” He’s since developed a love for shooting wildlife and capturing their expressions, as seen on this page. The snapshots include a bird taking flight at the Chapel Trail Nature Preserve, a burrowing owl spotted in a local park, and a giant limpkin standing majestically on the edge of the water. “I see the world differently now,” says Englehardt. “I see the beauty in everything—even the animals some people think aren’t so beautiful.” —Melissa Puppo 76
