FROM THE EDITOR

Every summer we dedicate this issue to the joy of travel, hailing the unbridled bliss of getting away from it all, whether that means a day trip to Doral to take a swing on new links or a month spent meandering in Monaco. This year, however, although we remain enthusiastic about great escapes, we invite you to view travel not just in a literal sense—trains, planes, and automobiles, if you will—but also through journeys of perspective. The Paradise Coast continues to pilgrimage forth in kindness and collaboration as it emerges from the pandemic, and Neapolitans are channeling wanderlust into virtual pursuits, cerebral distractions, and treks to help their neighbors. Starting on page 19 in Insider and also on page 74 in Eat + Drink, we salute just a fraction of the local coronavirus relief efforts that have united our community. Generosity continues to take center stage with a pandemic-related gift from Artis—Naples Board Chair Kimberly Querrey and her husband, Louis Simpson, who’ve pledged to match all new and increased donations to the arts complex, up to $1 million, through December 31. At the David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health, meanwhile, a new Virtual Care Center has been created to offer web-based telehealth counseling as Collier County residents of all ages re-envision the road ahead. And speaking of remote solutions, turn to page 80 in our Balance section to meet Naples personal trainer Rita Morgano, who put her Zumba class on Zoom for a lively Latin dance excursion in her clients’ living rooms. For those not ready to take flight just yet, plane tickets have been replaced by books and movies (find out Neapolitan Kirsten Ferrara’s favorite film in Sense of Place on page 96), and road trips are the perfect fuel for a more private sojourn. Beginning on page 46, we reveal both the mileage to and marvelous aspects of these six destinations: Charleston, South Carolina; Louisville, Kentucky; Florida’s Middle Keys; New Orleans; Sanibel Island; and Washington D.C. Don’t feel like hitting the gas? Explore the Keys through a fascinating new map book, discussed in Insider on page 22, by Naples marine and environmental engineer Todd Turrell. Regardless of where our travels take us during challenging times—and whether a passport or password is required—there’s no place like home. For those of us who’ve chosen the Paradise Coast, our hearts are never far from the hospitality that keeps us here.

Hometown HEROES

Cooperation and kindness define the Paradise Coast, but altruism has become even more apparent as neighbors respond to a pandemic with unparalled generosity. Alliances include Community Foundation of Collier County grants to the Hunger & Homeless Coalition, Noah’s Ark Family Services Food Bank, Brighter Bites produce program in Immokalee, and many more through the Collier Comes Together Fund. Neapolitan largesse also is woven into masks made by local fashion designers Peter Jean Marie and Dominic Lacquaniti; reflected by advice and encouragement on Naples Strong social media pages; and demonstrated through countless collaborations between food suppliers and businesses determined to keep first responders fed. For more examples of grassroots grace, please turn the page. —Loretta Grantham

INSIDER GIVING BACK

Neapolitan nonprofits rallied to respond to the crush of needs created by COVID-19 and continue to be both creative and caring as the community moves forward. The League Club, for example, gave $16,500 to the Naples Therapeutic Riding Center, which provides riding lessons and equinefacilitated group services for children and adults with physical, social, and mental needs. The grant will provide scholarships as well as overall support for the center, which lost revenue after programming was suspended. Although the gift originally was earmarked for riding lessons, The League Club, which has awarded virus-related grants totaling more than $400,000 to 44 area nonprofits, made an exception. “Nearly all of our region’s nonprofits are experiencing disruptions to their programs and projects caused by the pandemic,” says League Club President Gigi Stewart. “Making these funds unrestricted in use is the best way we can help the organizations that our members voted to support, and we’re proud to be flexible enough to address this need.”

From Saddles to STEM Kits

The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and the Naples Children & Education Foundation, meanwhile, partnered to help groups that serve young people by distributing at-home STEM kits and fitness packages. More than 650 students received items to help them focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; and about 200 pieces of fitness equipment were donated as well. “During this very challenging time, it’s important to provide kids with ways in which they can continue to learn and stay active, and hopefully what we’re doing is taking a small step in that direction,” says Baseball Hall of Fame member Cal Ripken Jr., who co-created the foundation to honor his father’s legacy. Groups that benefited include the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County’s Bolch & Nichols Campus; Gargiulo Education Center; Grace Place for Children and Families; NCEF’s Out-of-School Time Initiative; and Valerie’s House. —L.G.

FPL Solar Canopies in Naples

FPL’s SolarNow canopies harness energy at North Collier Regional Park (above and far right) and at the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens (right).

Those giant parking structures at the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens and North Collier Regional Park are shady business, to be sure, but they’re also doing much more than helping to keep your car cool. They’re generating energy. “People love solar, but most never get the opportunity to see what it looks like,” says Matt Valle, vice president of devel-

opment for Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). “That’s because solar panels are typically out of sight at our 28 large solar energy centers located in rural areas. By integrating solar technology in urban settings, we’re inspiring millions of people to familiarize themselves with the renewable energy source that is playing a big role in how we power our state.” The two local high-visibility locations are among numerous Collier County sites participating in FPL’s voluntary SolarNow program. Adds zoo spokesperson Courtney Jolly Goff: “The canopy serves as a teaching tool for all ages in our community—from teaching children the basics of converting sunshine to energy, to educating adults on the increasing need to conserve resources.” (fpl.com) —L.G.

ISLAND Exploration Naples author’s map book unveils more on the FLORIDA KEYS By Cathy Chestnut Antique maps are treasures in and of themselves. While the passage of time can change topography, maps illuminate the mysterious pasts of places we thought we knew. Naples marine engineer Todd Turrell unpacks the geographic legacy of one of the state’s most beloved destinations in his new coffeetable book, The Florida Keys: A History Through Maps (Island Map Publishing, $120). A founding principal at the marine and environmental consulting firm Turrell, Hall, & Associates, Turrell has previously published two other books, Naples Waterfront: Changes in Time and A History of the Bahamas Through Maps. For his Keys tome, which was released in early March, he joined forces with professional map collector Brian Schmitt of Marathon and South Florida archaeologist Robert S. Carr. In addition to historic photographs and artifacts, the book showcases a mix of modern and vintage maps, some of which have never been published for a wide audience and debunk the common view that Juan Ponce de León “discovered” Florida in 1513. There are six European-made maps known to pre-date de León’s landing, and this compendium features three, including ship pilot Juan de la Cosa’s 1500 map that is regarded as the earliest confirmed representation of the Americas. There’s also one of the Florida peninsula, created in 1502 and called the “Cantino Planisphere,” and Peter Martyr’s circa-1511 map of the Keys archipelago, which was early on known as “Los Martires,” or “The Martyrs.” The latter is the first printed 22

map devoted to the New World that depicts the lands north of the Bahamas and Cuba. Another compelling inclusion is a 1778 French map that sheds light on the currents of the Gulf (or Gulph) Passage. Benjamin Franklin helped to publish this important document that aided French allies during the American Revolution. “Here’s an American patriot that did one of the first accurate maps of the Gulf Stream, yet it doesn’t exist in English,” Turrell says. While the Keys as a vacation hot spot are now associated with spectacular diving, lobsters, Ernest Hemingway, and Duval Street, that hasn’t always been the case. Sixteenthcentury Spanish explorers called the chain’s southernmost island “Cayo Hueso,” or “Bone

Key,” after being greeted by piles of bleached human skeletons—vestiges of the once-mighty Calusa—upon arrival. With the goal of delving into the Keys’ multifaceted history and sharing little-known information, Turrell, Schmitt, and Carr charted the region’s geological formation and researched its first people, early settlers, shipwrecks, hurricanes, and modern development, exploring each mile marker along the journey. They also looked at the waterways and modes of transportation, such as the Gulf Stream, Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway, and the Overseas Highway, that played a huge part in defining the Keys we know today. STYLE BEACH Days By Katherine Lande In lieu of jet-setting this summer, many will opt to holiday closer to home instead. Staycations don’t have to be synonymous with sacrificing glamour, however. Upgrade those beachside essentials with pieces from Gucci’s newly launched collection of woven organic cotton accessories featuring nautical stripes, a throwback “G” logo, and orange leather patches that highlight resort cities like Saint-Tropez, Capri, Mykonos, Monte Carlo, and Miami. Available online at gucci.com and in store at their corresponding cities, these towels, hats, bags, and pouches make for chic fun-in-the-sun frills and unforgettable souvenirs. Coastal Couture

A North Naples condo gets a dose of Neapolitan SOPHISTICATION By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by SPM Photography This four-bedroom condominium in Kalea Bay already had all the necessary ingredients to make for one dreamy abode. In addition to an open, airy floor plan, the 3,280-square-foot condo offered ample room to host guests, as well as a glorious view of the Gulf of Mexico. All it needed was a little personalization. After touring several Kalea Bay models created by various interior designers, the homeowners commissioned Renée Gaddis, principal interior designer and owner of Naples-based Renée Gaddis Interiors, to bring their vision to life. “The clients were very open to different

ideas for their holiday home,” says Gaddis. So as not to take away from the condo’s waterfront vista, she opted for a neutral color palette enlivened with mixed metals, striking natural elements, and touches of glamour. “We went with a transitional style with a coastal flair and had a lot of fun.” In the great room, what began as a blank slate became a canvas for strong geometric details offset by cozy furnishings. Gaddis commissioned a custom media/fireplace wall, made using linear planks of Thassos (a type of marble quarried in Greece) in hues of white and gray that form a chevron pattern. Rift oak bookshelves add contrast and richness. Fashioned from padded gray velvet crowned with marble, the coffee table augments the space with a warmth reminiscent of an ottoman. Its circular shape is echoed in the curve of the sofa and more subtly in the legs of the side table. The gray and white color story expressed in these pieces, as well as in the carpet and scattered vases, continues in the large artwork by Naples artists Eric and Jessica Crabtree. The sleek kitchen marries modern accents with homey features, resulting in an area that appears both streamlined and unfussy. The bespoke brass and stainless-steel range hood draws the eye to the Art Deco–esque marble backsplash with stainless-steel inserts. A crescent brass chandelier is situated over the island bar, where four swivel barstools clad in a textured fabric await diners. Adjacent to the kitchen, the formal dining room shares a similar sophisticated aesthetic. The chairs, cloaked in light-smoke brushed velvet and set on ebony-stained wood frames, surround a brown oak table. “The chairs are designed to be pulled out without touching

the fabric by holding onto the gap between the fabric and wood frame at the top,” Gaddis says. The chandelier, finished in a soft-stain brass, and another painting by Eric and Jessica Crabtree complete the vignette. Gaddis’ marriage of gray and metallics continues in areas such as the powder room— where brass accessories including an edgy sconce capture a city-chic sensibility—and the opulent master bedroom. At once peaceful and romantic, the space benefits from an abundance of natural light. The capiz shell wallpaper glimmers in concurrence with the large chain-link and brass chandelier and the ambient LED lighting in the custom coved ceiling. The king bed exudes comfort, outfitted in luxe linens and nestled inside a faux-suede headboard and footboard. The gray and white rug, a blend of wool and viscose, adds even more sheen. The homeowner chose to turn the other three bedrooms into guest retreats, resulting in a range of suites to suit each visitor’s needs and preferences. Gaddis took this as an opportunity to deviate slightly from the style of the rest of the home and craft three unique rooms with personalities all their own. “People are usually a little more flexible in having fun pieces

033_ABODE_0720.indd 35

in guest rooms,” she notes. “I don’t think any room should be too stuffy, and every room should be able to have something a little unexpected.” In the first guest room, that concept is realized in a nightstand that resembles a vintage luggage rack with a suitcase on top, as well as a reading nook defined by a woven seagrass chair that feels more like a comfy pod. In another, inky-blue hues complement neutral woven furnishings and champagne-metal pendants with star cutouts. The final guest bedroom is ideal for families as it boasts two queen beds that can accommodate up to four children. Beyond the tranquil colors and inviting bedding, the room showcases subtle global nods, NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2020

To create the latter, the artist places a sheet of washi paper over an actual fish and rubs it with sumi ink until the definition of the animal is imprinted onto the paper. On the balcony, Gaddis brought warmth to the large stretch of white cement by paneling the two recessed niches with teak

tongue-and-groove planks. A cement and teak coffee table defines one seating area, while another centers around a dining set ideal for alfresco feasts. As a whole Gaddis describes the home has the perfect combination of contemporary and coastal. “It was a fun project because it’s clean and very simple without a lot of fuss, and yet it’s done well so it has a modern and sleek feel with a Florida coastal vibe.” «

VIBE Timeless, chic, laid-back

MICHAEL CARONCHI

Cullen Talton Daane’s ties to Naples date back to the late 1800s when her great-grandfather docked his sailing schooner at the Naples Pier. Although originally from Islamorada, Daane moved to the Paradise Coast when she was 1 and was a lifer at the Community School of Naples. Today she and her mother, Martha Talton, run Pierre & Harry, a pearl and gemstone jewelry purveyor on Thirteenth Avenue South. The company was named after Daane’s father, Harry, and their family friend, Pierre, whom they spent a great deal of time with during vacations in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, a quaint community nestled on the southeastern coast of France between Monaco and Menton. Daane studied international business management at the International University of Monaco, and she and her mother often return to the area to explore the open-air markets, swim in the sea, and take day trips to the mountains. —Caroline Ridgway

ADVANTAGE Aston

The latest Vantage coupe may be an entry model, but its cool factor is EXPONENTIAL By Howard Walker As someone who’s served up his fair share of James Bond quips, I’m doing my best to refrain from going into overdrive right now. But to slide behind the wheel of an Aston Martin and not reference the indelible 007 connection is something of a challenge. Especially since the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage rocket ship I’ve been piloting never failed to leave me shaken, stirred, and desperate to, well, drive another day. I’ll also point out that the first time anyone saw this iteration of the Vantage coupe was in the 2015 Bond blockbuster Spectre, two full years before it went on sale. Who can forget that heart-pumping chase through the back streets of Rome, Daniel Craig powersliding the Aston around the Colosseum before unceremoniously dumping it into the Tiber River? The 2020 Vantage, priced from $156,081, is the entry model in the range, but it’s also the sexiest, most fun, most agile Aston Martin on the market. This, my friends, is a car with a true license to thrill. A lot of this two-seater’s appeal comes down to the comprehensive makeover it received in 2018. At the time, most of its original wrongs 42

were righted, resulting in a reimagined body, an improved aluminum chassis with bits borrowed from the bigger DB11, a new V-8 engine, and a higher-quality interior. That V-8 is a byproduct of the technical partnership Aston Martin forged with Mercedes-Benz in 2013. In return for a stake in the British car maker, Mercedes agreed to supply its AMG-built 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, along with electronics and infotainment systems. This is essentially the same engine that powers the Mercedes-AMG GT, which is, ironically, a serious competitor to the Vantage. In the Aston, it yields a 503-hp punch and 505 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to fire the rear-drive Vantage to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and not quit until the speedo shows 195 mph. See it in the metal and your heart will melt. While Aston Martins of old have tended to be refined grand tourers, such as that iconic 1965 DB5 from Goldfinger, the Vantage is a blunt instrument. Think of a muscular Daniel Craig in a tight-fitting Brioni tux, all bulging biceps and six-pack abs. That’s the Vantage.

PRICE: FROM $156,081 ENGINE: 4.0-LITER TWIN-TURBO V-8 POWER: 503 HP TORQUE: 505 LB-FT TRANSMISSION: 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC 0-60: 3.6 SECONDS TOP SPEED: 195 MPH LENGTH/ WIDTH: 175.8/76.5 INCHES WEIGHT: 3,360 POUNDS WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE EVERY TIME YOU SLIDE BEHIND THE WHEEL, YOU’LL CHANNEL YOUR INNER BOND.

There’s function behind this eye-candy form; that huge front spoiler and ducktail rear lip ensure the car stays rock-solid, even when approaching 200 mph. And despite the car being shorter than a Porsche 911, the cabin feels surprisingly roomy. It’s practical too. Pop open the high-lifting tailgate and there’s more than 12 cubic feet of luggage space. The lack of a glovebox, on the other hand, is laughable. To drive the Aston, however, is to love it. The big AMG V-8 is mated with ZF’s trusty 8-speed automatic, which shifts gears with the immediacy of flicking a light switch. Toggling through the trio of drive modes—Sport, Sport+, and Track—will enliven the engine and quicken shifts. Sport+, my favorite, delivers slingshot launches, right-now passing, and the mid-range thrust of an F-18 on full afterburner. Surgically

l FOLLOW HOWARD WALKER’S THE WHEEL WORLD BLOG ON NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM precise electric-assist steering and 20-inch tires with the grip of 20 cases of Gorilla Glue round out the driving experience. My only complaint, in fact, is about those rubber band–like tires, which produce a heck of a lot of road noise. But that’s a small price to pay for this much excitement, style, and athleticism. Should you buy one? Of course. After all, you once live twice. «

Vicem Yacht’s brand-new Cruiser 67 oozes classic style and ELEGANCE By Howard Walker

L

overs of C.S. Lewis’ children’s fantasy novel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe will know all about the treat that is Turkish delight. For the uninitiated, it’s what the White Witch uses to tempt young Edmund Pevensie into forming an evil alliance that would threaten mystical Narnia. Gripping stuff. If you’ve ever tasted this exotic concoction, you’ll understand the attraction. Or maybe not—it’s a whole heap of sugar. For boat lovers, however, there’s an even more delicious Turkish delight that’s just as satisfying: the Cruiser 67, Istanbul-based Vicem’s latest addition to its range of exquisite, hand-crafted motor yachts. The Cruiser 67 was slated to make its global debut at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show in March, but COVID-19 put paid to

that. Now hull No. 1 is being showcased close to Vicem’s U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale. At 68 feet bow to stern, the brand-new 67 is the smallest in Vicem’s classically styled Cruiser series that includes an 82, 97, and 107 footer. As with its siblings, what sets this newcomer apart is the craftsmanship and advanced technology that goes into the construction. It’s made from good, old-fashioned wood. Of course, that’s a huge oversimplification when, in actuality, it involves four layers of solid mahogany planking, each saturated in West Systems Epoxy and laid at 90-degree angles. When cured, this I-beam-stiff, sound-absorbing matrix of laminated wood is sheathed in fiberglass. High-load areas get added strength with layers of carbon fiber. This cold-molding process provides higher

But this isn’t the Turkish yard’s 18 FEET DRAFT: 5 FEET 9 INCHES POWER: 2 X only woodworking claim to fame. The 67’s VOLVO PENTA D-13 DIESELS entire interior, in fact, is a sea of hand-crafted HORSEPOWER: 2,000 TOP matte and mirror-varnished mahogany. An expanCHARM WITH STATE-OF-THEsive back deck has shaded seating for eight ART INNOVATION. around a gorgeous dining table. As a semi-custom builder, Vicem gives buyers pretty much a free hand in interior layouts. The first Cruiser 67 was designed to sleep six in three staterooms and features a full-beam master, a VIP guest suite in the bow, and a spacious twin-berth cabin. A well-equipped crew cabin at the stern has bunk beds, a separate galley, and head. The salon has an open-plan layout with opposite-facing sofas, a galley amidships, and a flexible dining area close to the helm. Powering this wooden wonder is a pair of 1,000-hp Volvo D-13 turbo diesels that can push the 67’s planing hull to 26 knots. Cruising speed is a relaxed 20 knots, which offers a range of around 500 miles. Throttle

back to 10 knots and she’ll run close to 1,500 miles—that’s roughly Fort Lauderdale to St. Barts—without a fill-up. And with a depth of just 5 feet 9 inches, this beauty is Bahama-friendly too. The Cruiser 67 boasts a base price of $3.5 million, which reflects Turkey’s low labor costs and the dollar’s continued strength against the Turkish lira. One interesting incentive is Vicem’s offer to transport any new 67 to the Mediterranean for sea trials, giving buyers the opportunity to open it up on the Med before shipping it back to the U.S. at Vicem’s expense. Just another way this motor yacht is a true Turkish delight. «

Middle Keys MAKEOVER Florida’s Middle Keys are often regarded as the forgotten stretch of the Sunshine State’s famed island chain. Not as adorable and quirky as the Lower Keys nor as established or accessible as the Upper Keys, they’ve never received attention on par with their siblings. However, that’s all changing thanks to Isla Bella Beach Resort, a 24-acre, amenity-rich property in Marathon that illustrates why the Middle Keys should no longer be overlooked. STAY

Opened in 2019, Isla Bella Beach Resort is the first and only full-service luxury hotel in Marathon, holding claim to the largest private waterfront of any Keys property. The resort maximizes this excess through five oceanfront swimming pools, a 200-foot beach, and an outward-facing design for all 199 guest rooms and suites, such that each has its own fabulous Atlantic Ocean view. Delicately dressed in a palette of white and blue (with a few palm tree prints thrown in for good measure), rooms channel maritime-meets-tropical chic and recall the essence of a modern-day Keys’ beach house.

Choose from five public beach accesses—we recommend Lighthouse Beach on the eastern end or Bowman’s Beach for a quieter alternative—and hunt for such natural treasures as coquinas and kitten paws. Alternatively, embark on a beach walk with an expert from the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum (shellmuseum.org) to learn what makes Sanibel shelling so special. Later, check out the museum, the only one in the world devoted to shells and living mollusks. Of course, every Sanibel vacation must include a visit to J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge (dingdarlingsociety.org), so carve out a day to traverse its network of nature trails.

In a state full of captivating flora and fauna, Sanibel stands out for its pristine beaches and commitment to conservation. This barrier island off the coast of Fort Myers is world-renowned for its exquisite shelling, historic sites, and laid-back lifestyle—in fact, there’s not a single stoplight on either Sanibel or its neighboring island, Captiva. A vast portion of Sanibel looks remarkably similar to how it did when Calusa Native Americans, Spanish explorers, and pirates roamed its shores, complete with postcard-worthy sunsets. CULTURAL Crossing Influenced by Spanish and French occupation as well as its African, Creole, and Cajun inhabitants, New Orleans boasts a singular flavor unlike anywhere else in the U.S., or the world for that matter. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the French Quarter, where voodoo shops, jazz clubs, historical sites, and award-winning restaurants punctuate lanternlit cobblestone streets lined with cast-iron balconies and lush ferns. Yet, there’s more to The Big Easy than its iconic neighborhood. —Liz Petoniak

You could easily fill days wandering the French Quarter and hitting up jazz joints like The Spotted Cat, but you’d miss out on the rest of the Crescent City’s bounty. Hop on the 1835 St. Charles Streetcar over to the Garden District, home to many architectural masterpieces and bustling Magazine Street with its quaint shops and restos. To admire some of New Orleans’ best relics, continue on to City Park, a 1,300-acre public green space where near-millennia-old oak trees draped in Spanish moss stretch their branches. The New Orleans Museum of Art’s Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden (noma.org) occupies 11 of those acres and beckons art aficionados with more than 90 sculptures strewn across verdant grounds.

If the walls of NOLA’s eighteenthand nineteenth-century buildings could talk, they would have plenty of juicy stories to tell. At The Marquee by Bluegreen Vacation Club (blue greenvacations.com), the walls, or rather the artwork hanging on them, depict the tales of local artists of the past through augmented-reality technology; simply open the corresponding app and hold your phone over the piece to watch them come to life. Unpack your bags in the heart of Charleston at The Restoration (therestoration hotel.com), a high-end boutique property within walking distance of premier sights and culinary hot spots. Residential-style suites measure larger than most city apartments and boast exposed brick walls, restored wood floors, kitchenettes, and barn doors leading to colossal bathrooms. Both the suites and common spaces speak to Charleston’s past in the horse trade, as seen in equine-themed sculptures, design flourishes, and photographs by artist Gately Williams. The Restoration also abounds in grand amenities uncommon in similarly sized hotels; think a swimming pool, an in-house coffee bar providing complimentary morning joe for guests, passes to a nearby full-service gym, and an excellent rooftop bar and restaurant. In total, the property exudes style, warmth, and luxury, everything one could covet in the South’s coolest city.

Historic homes, gardens, and parklands tell some of Charleston’s most colorful stories. At Middleton Place (middletonplace.org), admire America’s oldest landscaped gardens, inspired by the classic work of André Le Nôtre of Versailles and Vauxle-Vicomte fame. Take a docent-led tour of the Nathaniel Russell House (historiccharleston. org), a distinguished antebellum family home that has been restored to its 1808 luster. Follow this with an American history lesson at the Heyward-Washington House (charleston museum.org), where Thomas Heyward Jr., a lawyer and signer of the Declaration of Independence, hosted George Washington on his presidential tour of the South. To experience America’s rich past outdoors, drive to Sullivan Island. GATEWAY to the South This diverse city of more than 600,000 accents its scenic locale on the Ohio River with one-of-a-kind activities that speak to its distinctly Southern heritage. In addition to such marquee attractions as the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts and the Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville is also home to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, slated for September 5. One of the best ways to spend the day in Derby City is to explore it by foot, traversing its myriad preservation districts and parks, 17 of which were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Today travelers and locals gather at the downtown hotel for spirited conversation, drinks, and light dining at the English Grill. For a nightcap, sample one of more than 140 choices of rare bourbon, The Brown’s tribute to Louisville’s favorite sip. Following a multimillion-dollar renovation, The Dupont Circle Hotel (doylecollection. com) has debuted with a statement-making, mid-century modern vibe. To perfect a new-fashioned take on 1950s glamour, parent company The Doyle Collection commissioned powerhouses Martin Brudnizki Design Studio and Clodagh Design to deliver an interior fantasy paying homage to the building’s roots. The lobby recalls the most swoon-worthy of Mad Men backdrops, with a dimly lit expanse of dark wood panels and marble counters morphing into a sunlit nook of textured oak furnishings surrounded by oversized U-shaped chairs. The old-school magic further unfolds at Doyle, a stylish bar overlooking Dupont Circle, and throughout the hotel’s rooms and suites. In particular, the ninth floor houses a new collection of suites, each boasting a bespoke aesthetic but sharing certain common threads, such as four-poster canopy beds, brass-trimmed nightstands, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The majority of these penthouse-level accommodations open to heated balconies with views of the D.C. skyline, some of which extend as far as the Washington Monument.

Taste TEST While both favored ingredients in his native Italy, chef Fabrizio Aielli notes that white truffle and tomato are a very unusual combination. “Due to the acidity of the tomatoes, chefs avoid mixing those ingredients,” says Aielli, proprietor of the Aielli Group, which comprises Sea Salt, Barbatella, Dorona, and Grappino. This unlikely pairing comes into balance in his divine lobster risotto with roasted tomato and white truffle perfume. “We found a way to make it work by drying the tomatoes for 24 hours, deseeding and peeling them, and finally roasting them. This allows the sweetness of the tomato to come through and enhances the taste of the lobster and white truffle.” This risotto was the signature dish at Teatro Goldoni, his award-winning restaurant in Washington D.C., and is featured in his Sea Salt Cookbook, available on Amazon and at all of his Naples establishments. Build Your Own BAR CART Many of us learned a revealing lesson during the coronavirus quarantine: As much as we love our local bartenders, it’s possible to replicate many of their creations at home. Here’s a guide to everything you’ll need to make quality cocktails.

STOCK THE ESSENTIALS

Frye two-tier bar cart from Crate & Barrel

MIX THE DRINKS Spritzers: White wine and club soda are a perfect hot-weather combination. The Aperol Spritz has attained nearly mythic status, and there are many variations (cassis, StGermain, sloe gin, Cointreau, or an aperitif such as Cocchi Americano).

l TIP: FOR A WHITE WINE SPRITZER, BEGIN WITH A 3:1 RATIO OF WINE TO SODA. USE GOOD WINE, BUT MIX THE DRINK OUT OF SIGHT OF GUESTS TO AVOID HORRIFYING ANY PURISTS.

72

CRATE & BARREL

Spirits: Bottles of vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey. Depending on your taste, the whiskey can be sweet (bourbon), spicy (rye), or astringent (Scotch). Liqueurs: One bottle each of sweet and dry vermouth, one herbal spirit such as Campari, and an orange-based liqueur such as Cointreau Mixers: Club soda and tonic Bitters: One bottle of Angostura Fruit: Oranges, lemons, and limes Equipment: A two-part Boston shaker, a Hawthorne strainer, a juice press, a bar spoon, and a double-sided jigger (either .5 and .75 ounces, or 1 and 1.5 ounces). We assume you have knives, cutting boards, and ice. Don’t

worry about glassware; it’s not wine, and it will all taste just fine regardless of the glass. Books: A basic guide such as Dale DeGroff’s The Essential Cocktail: The Art of Mixing Perfect Drinks or The Joy of Mixology: The Consummate Guide to the Bartender’s Craft by Gary Regan

l TIP: THE AXIOM “GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT” RINGS TRUE, SO BUY HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTS ACROSS THE BOARD. SEEK OUT MIXERS SUCH AS FEVER-TREE AND Q TONIC. MAKE YOUR OWN SOUR MIX USING FRESH FRUIT AND SIMPLE SYRUP. YOUR BODY WILL THANK YOU THE NEXT MORNING.

Beertails: Using beer as a cocktail base provides a refreshing change of pace, and there’s no need to use exotic craft beers as cheaper versions actually mix better. Add some lemonade or muddled fresh berries, or spike it with orange juice for a riff on a mimosa. Don’t forget the Michelada, a Mexican favorite: Mix a 12-ounce beer, the juice of two limes, two teaspoons each of Worcestershire and Tabasco, and a teaspoon of Maggi with ice and pour into a glass rimmed with salt. Sangria: For an upscale version, combine one bottle Rioja (Crianza is fine) and one cup each of brandy, Cointreau, orange juice, and lemon juice with club soda to taste. Marinate some fruit in the mixture overnight before serving. If you prefer, use a white wine from Rueda or Jumilla. Pimm’s Cup: Mix Pimm’s No. 1 Cup (a ginbased liqueur infused with herbs and spices) with soda, Sprite, or English lemonade. Garnish with apples, cucumbers, oranges, lemons, strawberries, and/or mint.

l TIP: KEEP A SEPARATE ICE TRAY FILLED WITH BOTTLED OR PURIFIED WATER.

Naples is a tight-knit community, and the coronavirus pandemic demonstrated just how far Neapolitans are willing to go to support one another. While many businesses were closed and without income, it didn’t stop them from stepping forward and helping those in need. The effort began in early April, when Sails Restaurant partnered with William Raveis Real Estate to deliver meals to health-care workers. They started with 150 per day and quickly escalated to 300, with the goal of providing 3,500 meals to

The 220 members of the Fifth Avenue South Business Improvement District followed suit with the #UnitedonFifth campaign, which included a Feeding the Frontline initiative that saw restaurants donate food to health-care workers, EMS personnel, and police officers. The Port Royal Association donated $60,000 to purchase 150 gift cards from 10 restaurants, and Bice gave an additional $10 for every $40 gift card purchased. Primo Hoagies, Sicilia Restaurant, 21 Spices, Vineyards Country Club, and The Moorings Golf & Country Club also provided food to those fighting the virus. The Naples Soap Company donated hundreds of “comfort care kits” to workers at NCH and Lee Health; the kits included grooming items such as soaps, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and toothpaste as well as bath bombs, chocolate, and honey. TASTE POUR

Spiked to THRILL

Hard seltzer’s popularity shows no sign of FIZZING OUT By Mark Spivak

Hard seltzer owes its success in part to its low-calorie, low-carb fruity flavors.

T

raditionally, beverage trends started when a bunch of executives put their heads together, decided what would be the next hot thing, and then invested enough in advertising and promotion to make it happen. The wine industry repeatedly wreaked havoc with that model, spawning consumer-led trends that ran counter to product supply. Hard seltzer, the success story of 2019, didn’t fall neatly into either playbook. Its refusal to fade away has also confounded experts. Last 76

year’s growth in the category exploded, with retail sales reaching nearly $1.3 billion. Analysts believe it will be worth $2.5 billion by 2021. Contrary to the artistic aspects of making wine or the technical expertise required for distilling spirits, the recipe for hard seltzer is simple: sparkling purified water, alcohol, and flavorings. Some versions add malted barley, attempting to echo the success of Zima (an early entry into the category, created by Coors in 1993). White Claw, the undisputed leader in the field, dominates 60 percent of the market. Its 12-ounce cans contain 100 calories and 5 percent alcohol, and it is available in nine flavors. If you’ve been in a supermarket recently, you’ve probably seen massive displays of White Claw in high-traffic aisles. The success of hard seltzer has hit beer producers the hardest, and the biggest brewers are launching their own brands: Molson Coors (Henry’s Hard Sparkling), Boston Beer Company (Truly Hard Seltzer), and Anheuser-Busch InBev (Bon Viv, along with the recently released Bud Light Seltzer). Spirits conglomerates are also getting in on the action, with Diageo introducing a line of spiked seltzer and Constellation promoting Corona Refresca, a malt-based beverage in a variety of fruit flavors. Sanjiv Gajiwala, vice president of marketing at Mark Anthony Brands (makers of White Claw), sees unlimited market growth due to the fact that the majority of Americans have yet to try the product. To someone who appreciates craft beer, fine wine, or high-end spirits, the appeal of hard seltzer may be baffling. Compared to brewing, winemaking, or distilling, the process of creating it requires no special talent. Nor is it dependent on terroir; the product will taste the same whether it’s made in Beaune or Buffalo. There are no exotic, small-batch versions that deliver bragging rights to the buyer who found them, nor are there expensive examples that bestow peergroup approval. Some hard seltzer producers market their product as healthy, stressing the natural fruit flavors, low sugar, and alcohol (it is roughly as strong as the average craft beer and has one-third the kick of a typical Napa Cabernet). Even so, it’s difficult to equate the drink

NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

076_POUR_0720.indd 76

6/1/20 4:15 PM

with yogurt or granola. There’s also no data to suggest that hard seltzer is more popular with any single generation of consumers. While the portability of ready-to-drink cans seems to suggest an active, outdoor lifestyle, sales remained strong during the coronavirus lockdown. It may well be that the hard seltzer phenomenon is a rejection of connoisseurship and a return to convenience. Prior to the 1970s, there was very little wine culture in America; beer and spirits were prized more for their alcoholic wallop than their aesthetic overtones. All that changed with the Paris Tasting, the rise of craft beer, and the appearance of super-premium spirits such as Grey Goose. If the current trajectory continues, we may be entering a period when fine distinctions in quality are less important than the ability to open a pop-top and enjoy yourself. « Leaders in the hard seltzer category include White Claw and Truly. Major beverage corporations have launched their own versions hoping to get a piece of the pie.

HYDRATION

Water WAYS Staying hydrated in the Florida heat can be challenging, especially if guzzling water isn’t your thing. Experts such as Dr. Katherine Stam, medical director of the Cederquist Medical Wellness Center in Naples, typically recommend eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day depending on your age, activity level, and other factors that you should discuss with a health-care practitioner. “You also can get a lot of water from fruits and vegetables,” says Stam, who has practiced in Michigan and New York. “They’re typical summer foods. And the higher the water content of a food, the less calories, so they’re great for weight loss also.” Summer fruits and veggies—such as melons and cucumbers—are chockfull of water. “The beautiful thing is you can’t really eat too much of it,” Stam adds. “A cup of watermelon is only about 46 calories.” (drcederquist.com)

“Some people are so hesitant to walk into a class because they don’t want to look silly, but they don’t have to worry about that when they’re in their own house,” says fitness instructor and personal trainer Rita Morgano, who has been hosting virtual workouts since she moved to Naples from Connecticut a couple of years ago. What began as a way to stay connected with her northern clients has turned into a necessity during the age of coronavirus. When gyms closed in the spring, she took her offerings to the next level, expanding her virtual classes to include Zumba over Zoom three times a week. “Right now, having human interaction is such a wonderful thing, and getting stress out is so important,” she says. “Exercise is a great way to do it. And who doesn’t love to dance?” While some people leave their video on so classmates can see them, others don’t. Morgano likes to see faces, but she wants everyone to feel comfortable. “Occasionally there’s a connection issue or delay,” she says. “But even in person, we sometimes have glitches in our music or little hiccups. Most dentists don’t understand the importance of a healthy oral system.

WE DO!

HOME HEALTH

And we strive to educate each and every patient on the facts. Did you know that at least 80% of American adults have gum inflammation/disease? Gum disease is linked with blood vessel disease, heart attacks and strokes. Gum disease and tooth loss also increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Likewise, if an individual has diabetes and bleeding gums, the risk of a premature death increases by 400 to 700 percent. Essentially, your mouth talks to your body and your body talks to your mouth. To assess each patient’s oral health, we have an Oral DNA test available. This provides us with concrete evidence of the high-risk bacteria living in the mouth. When these tests come back with high levels of high-risk bacteria, we have an array of methods we can use to fight these bacteria and make sure that they will never come back. Here at the office of Dr Mantikas, we strive for optimal dental fitness. What’s a healthy outside without a healthy inside? The answer is simple. It’s nothing. So, YOU work on the outside and WE WILL work on the inside.

This quest led them to adopt a plantbased and oil-free diet, and Berson proudly reports that her husband “got 100 percent of his health back” and is on a “medication vacation.” This change, however, caused the couple to feel socially isolated from those who didn’t follow the same healthy lifestyle. “It’s the longevity pill through the fork, but it’s not very popular,” notes Berson, a real estate agent turned nutritionist. She formed Naples Green Scene: A PlantPowered Wellness Community as a way to connect with likeminded people, and what began as a small group has grown to nearly a thousand members. Now a nonprofit with a team of health specialists, Naples Green Scene offers nutritional talks, hosts cooking demonstrations, and works with renowned plant-

based eating experts and physicians to connect people with resources. It also hooks them up with discounts at area businesses. Although Berson has passed the baton to Naples Green Scene organizer and health coach Michelle Joy Kramer, she’s still active in the community and has shared her experience and insight in a book titled Green Scene Diet. She states that Naples Green Scene is always welcoming new members, even those who don’t fully transition to a whole-foods, plant-based diet. And, as the Naples culinary scene has evolved, this lifestyle is now easier to adopt than ever, with many restaurants, including AZN Azian Cuisine at Mercato and True Food Kitchen at Waterside Shops, offering an array of options. AGENDA l

Located at the intersection of U.S. 41 North and Fleischmann Boulevard, the Naples Preserve presents a unique slice of roadside history. Nature enthusiasts can traverse the 9.5-acre green space, comprising pine flatwoods and oak scrub, via a free, half-mile-long boardwalk. While on your stroll, keep an eye out for gopher tortoises, a state-designated threatened species, and the National Champion myrtle oak, which stands at 41 feet tall, making it the largest documented in the United States. The city acquired the site in 2000, following a vote by Collier County residents. Hundreds of volunteer hours went into clearing decades’ worth of trash and growth that had accumulated as the forlorn property sat unused. The on-site building, a modern gem designed by architect Donald E. Nick, was also refurbished. It’s said to have been one of the first buildings raised after Hurricane Donna ripped through the area in 1960. At

first, Julius Fleischmann used it as a promotional ticket booth for the Caribbean Gardens, but it later served as the Naples Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center through the late 1980s. Today it is called the Hedges Family Eco-Center and provides information about Collier County’s natural areas, history museums, talks, and programs. The center has been closed while the pollinator garden undergoes renovation; a reopening date has not yet been announced.

Cape Romano Dome House

This crumbling complex of stilted concrete “igloos” has seen better days—but it still has a stunning visual impact. Bob Lee, a retired oil producer, built this bizarre vacation pad in 1981, at the tip of Cape Romano in the Ten Thousand Islands, south of Marco Island. In its heyday, the Dome House was an awesome example of modern eco-innovation that included a rooftop rainwater-collection system. Through the forces of erosion, this cluster of structures became detached from the shoreline upon which they were built. They’re now surrounded by water and accessible only by boat. A private buyer purchased the property in 2001, but, according to published reports, construction costs and taxes are too prohibitive for rehabilitation. However, the shade and protection of the abandoned domes draw sea life, making them a favorite destination for not only photographers, but enthusiastic fishermen as well. One of the coolest structures in all of Florida, the Cape Romano Dome House was originally nestled in-land and covered 2,400 square feet. Its dome shape helped to run rainwater through troughs that led to massive filtration tanks under the home.

The elevated boardwalk at the Naples Preserve offers an easy hike with the opportunity to spot wildlife such as the gopher tortoise as well as native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers.

OCHOPEE POST OFFICE DID YOU KNOW THAT THE NATION’S SMALLEST POST OFFICE IS IN OUR BACKYARD? THE OCHOPEE POST OFFICE IS ONLY 8 FEET, 4 INCHES BY 7 FEET, 3 INCHES. WHY SO TINY? IT WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT AS AN IRRIGATION PIPE SHED BUT BECAME AN OFFICIAL POST OFFICE AFTER A FIRE DESTROYED OCHOPEE’S POST OFFICE AND GENERAL STORE IN 1953. LOCATED ABOUT 3 MILES EAST OF THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. 41 AND STATE ROAD 29, THE POST OFFICE IS STILL OPERATIONAL, OPEN ON WEEKDAYS FROM 8 TO 10 A.M. AND NOON TO 4 P.M., AND ON SATURDAYS FROM 10 TO 11:30 A.M.

CALUSA CANAL

ALTHOUGH DEVELOPMENT DESTROYED THE CANAL, A PORTION WAS UNCOVERED IN 2011. ITS VESTIGES ARE MARKED AT THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THIRD STREET SOUTH AND BROAD AVENUE SOUTH; NAPLES BACKYARD HISTORY (NAPLESBACKYARDHISTORY.ORG) CREATED THE MARKERS AND TRAIL MAPS THAT DESIGNATE THE AREA. A MARKER AT THE THIRD STREET BEACH CROSSOVER AT NINTH AVENUE SOUTH FEATURES ARTIST PAUL ARSENAULT’S PAINTING OF NATIVE AMERICANS USING THE CANAL.

091_AGENDA_0720.indd 93

NAPLES PIER The city’s most iconic landmark is a haven for longtime locals and first-time visitors. It remained closed under phase one of the state’s reopening, although its surrounding beach reopened in May. The Naples Pier Panorama webcam (naplespanorama.org) has long streamed spectacular pier footage, from the sun dipping below the horizon to storms rolling ashore. A favorite subject among photographers, the pier shifts moods depending on the weather, from tranquil amid clear skies to turbulent against thundering backdrops.

Otter Mound Preserve

l

Construction on the pier, which is nestled on the western end of Twelfth Avenue South, began in 1888 to service those patrons of the Naples Hotel arriving by boat. Due to the ravages of Mother Nature, it has been rebuilt several times. In 2015, it underwent a largescale reconstruction that included replacing the weather-worn wood with durable Brazilian Ipe. When fully operational, the destination remains a public fishing pier, and visitors do not need to have their own licenses to fish from it.

COURTESY NAPLES BACKYARD

BENEATH OLD NAPLES’ URBAN LANDSCAPE RESTS THE DEEPEST MAN-MADE NATIVE AMERICAN CANOE CANAL IN FLORIDA. BASED ON RADIOCARBON RESEARCH, THIS MILELONG, PREHISTORIC ENGINEERING MARVEL IS ESTIMATED TO HAVE BEEN DUG BETWEEN 1200 AND 1400 AD, WHEN THE AREA WAS LIKELY UNDER THE DOMINION OF THE CALUSA TRIBE. THE CANAL STRETCHED FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO, AT PRESENTDAY NINTH AVENUE SOUTH, TO THE NAPLES BAY, ENDING SOUTH OF THIRTEENTH AVENUE SOUTH. THE CANAL APPRECIABLY SHORTENED TRAVEL TIME BETWEEN THESE TWO BODIES OF WATER, CREATING A MORE EFFICIENT AND SAFER ROUTE.

Otter Mound may be one of the best-kept secrets on Marco Island. Conservation Collier purchased the first part of the site in 2004, followed by a second acquisition in 2007, totaling 2.45 acres that includes only three parking spaces and no facilities. This former Calusa mound (which dates back to between 700 and 1200 AD) is named for Ernest Otter, who moved there in the 1940s. For 50-odd years, Otter gathered the large whelk shells on and around the mound to build decorative walls and terrace liners. While Marco Island’s terrain is quite flat, steep-ish elevations exist in older neighborhoods built near Calusa shell mounds—such as this area on the southernmost tip of the island, known historically as Caxambas. Social distancing is easy to adhere to at Otter Mound Preserve, where visitors can bike or walk through trails dotted with informational signs outlining the archeological, historical, and ecological aspects of the property.

Ernest Otter collected whelk shells to construct walls across land once occupied by Calusa Native Americans.

MICHAEL CARONCHI

Kirsten Ferrara came to Naples 13 years ago and, in her words, instantly grew roots. The Northeast native has homes in New Jersey and on Martha’s Vineyard, but her affinity for Naples is undeniable. Ferrara has worked on Wall Street as a stocks and bonds trader, and has an entrepreneurial spirit as well as a philanthropic bent. When she’s not supporting Humane Society Naples, The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, and the Naples Children & Education Foundation, she can be found doting on her four toy poodles, Strudel, Noodle, Doodle, and Spaetzle Muttsarella. —Caroline Ridgway
