The Naples area has vacation and lifestyle choices for the young and

the young-at-heart. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning

guest, you’ll find that we’re a tropical paradise, and the Chamber is able

to seamlessly connect you with the experiences, venues, and people who

and theaters, Naples has something for absolutely everyone to enjoy.

Our area is also heralded for its energetic efforts in promoting a strong

partners are what make Naples a unique place to live, work, and visit.

We welcome you with enthusiasm and open hearts! We hope our guide

will help you realize the charm of our destination on Florida’s Paradise

There are endless ways to learn about the region’s underwater world, see wildlife, toast the sunset, or reel in a redfish or tarpon, famously known as the “Silver King.” Here are a few ways to float your boat from Naples to the Ten Thousand Islands. v Rent a 24-foot deck or console boat—with or without an experienced captain—at Naples Bay Resort Boat Rentals for a two-hour, full-day, sunset, or ecotour cruise. (nbrboatrental.com) v The Conservancy of Southwest Florida offers a unique opportunity to explore Rookery Bay with a naturalist and certified captain aboard the Good Fortune II, a 35-passenger pontoon boat. (conservancy.org) v Leave the car keys at home and board the Key West Express for a three-hour ride to the southernmost point in the United States. The ferry departs from Marco Island from late December through mid-February, with limited runs in March and April. The Key 16

West Express runs year-round from Lee County. (keywestexpress.net) v The 90-foot Marco Island Princess sails daily from Rose Marina, located 15 minutes from downtown Naples, for sightseeing, nature, history, and lunch, dinner, and cocktail cruises. (themarcoislandprincess. com) v Wouldn’t it be fun to have access to a boat whenever you want—without the hassle of owning one? At Freedom Boat Club, members pay an annual fee and can choose from a fleet of boats to use at their leisure. ( freedomboatclub.com) v A gentle marine mammal often called a sea cow, the Florida manatee is a special resident in Southwest Florida waters. Since 1999, See Manatees–Manatee Sightseeing Eco Adventures has specialized in taking visitors to see these slow-moving creatures in their natural habitat: shallow rivers, saltwater bays, canals, and marshy coastal areas. Trips run 90 minutes or three hours. (see-manatees.com) PATRICK FARRELL

PURSUING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IN NAPLES IS AS EASY AS A WALK IN THE PARK

Yoga on the beach at the Edgewater Beach Hotel

California to Japan, nine common denominators arose, including: being less sedentary, partaking in healthful diets, and engaging in increased socialization. The well-being of Collier County is connected to other factors, as well. More than 75 percent of the county’s lands are preserved—set aside as national, state, and regional parks—so there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Local taxpayers agreed to pay for conserving green space and environmentally sensitive land through Conservation Collier. In addition, there are 34 miles of white-sand beaches. The area is working together to promote Collier as a health and wellness destination. The Wellness Tourism Visionary Task Force, an initiative of the Paradise Coast Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), organized the inaugural “Be Well in Paradise” in 2019. More than three dozen businesses and hotels featured healthful packages during the day-long event. “We hope to make it an annual, signature event,” says CVB Executive Director Jack Wert. It’s a secret no more: Naples has held the No. 1 spot as the “happiest city in the nation”— four consecutive years in a row—in the Gallup National Health and Well-Being Index. Vestiges of the old Naples Pier

The Naples area is home to 34 miles of white-sand shoreline, and each beach is its own unique slice of paradise. In the original 1888 brochure promoting Naples as a new resort destination, “surf bathing” in the warm waters along the gently sloping shores of the Gulf of Mexico was touted as a “healthful” year-round pursuit. (Gulf temperatures generally range from 68 degrees Fahrenheit in early February to 88 degrees in early August.)

NEW PROJECTS AND EXPANSIONS HIGHLIGHT COLLIER COUNTY’S ROBUST ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL GROWTH

A

s Collier County’s population rises steadily each year, the economic landscape continues to expand as it meets the demand for more greenspace, recreational facilities, and cultural opportunities. In Bayshore, a supercharged revitalization has worked profoundly well. The once-distressed area east of downtown has become a thriving cultural hot spot. Elsewhere, Oakes Farms’ Seed to Table wonderland is sure to become a regional foodie destination. Throughout the county, more than $150 million in investments in regional parks will boost recreation options and fuel the county’s thriving sports tourism industry. For so long, these exciting projects were on

30

the horizon, but now they are in full bloom—a testament to local leaders’ and business owners’ visionary persistence in keeping Collier County a robust place to live.

Spotlight on Bayshore

Friends thought Diane Sullivan was making a shaky decision when she abandoned the corporate world to open her realty brokerage on Bayshore Drive in 2013. “People said, ‘Oh, be careful,’” Sullivan recalls. Even though Bayshore—an 1,800-acre area being revitalized by the Bayshore/Gateway Triangle Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA)—was years into concerted revival efforts, it still strug-

gled to shake its downtrodden reputation. That’s certainly not the case anymore. Businesses and eateries are flourishing, arts and culture are in the limelight, crime rates have dropped, and developers now have to take a number to get their foot in the door. “I have more businesses that want to open here than I have places to put them,” says Sullivan, who lives in Bayshore, which sits mostly south of U.S. 41. “I thought that if I was going to try to convince others to live here and do business here, I needed to live here and do business here.” Others have done the same. Destinations popular with families and millennials—such as Celebration Park Naples, an open-air, water-

vestments, and coordinated community engagement with public agencies and law enforcement. “The community’s gone out and fought like crazy,” says Gutierrez. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office “gets kudos big time,” he adds. “Their focus has

empowered people to better their own streets.” The modern-day renaissance has gone so well, Bayshore is wearing its old reputation as a badge of honor. Sullivan helped establish nonprofit status for the Bayshore Arts & Business Association, which will operate under a name that may make residents smile: Bayshore Arts District, or BAD. Looking forward, there are plans to add green space and a cultural and performing arts center on 17 acres of public land. “It’s a win-win for the future,” Gutierrez says. “If you do something really well, people will recognize it. That’s what we’ve done in Bayshore.”

front, food truck pavilion; the waterfront Three60 Market; and Ankrolab Brewing Company—have enhanced the district’s reputation for cultural diversity and vibrancy. These hip landmarks dovetail with an orchestrated intent to distinguish Bayshore—a former fishing village now promoting local artists and musicians—from its neighbors. “The whole neighborhood has that flare, that vibe,” says Maurice Gutierrez, chairman of the CRA’s advisory board and a Bayshore resident since 1978. Collier County created the CRA in 2000 to earmark property tax dollars to upgrade infrastructure and amenities. Regional Foodie Paradise

Oakes Farms’ new Seed to Table market—a 65,000-square-foot paradise for foodies—is a unique combination of in-store dining and inventory of produce and seafood that is “nothing but fresh,” according to owner Alfie Oakes. Located at the northeast corner of Immokalee and Livingston roads, Seed to Table projected hiring about 500 full- and part-time employees, including Culinary Institute of America–trained chefs, before opening. The one-of-a-kind destination combines casual, upscale, and outdoor dining; bars for wine, beer, smoothies, and freshsqueezed juices; and a café. Service areas offer from-scratch items, such as pasta, salads, ice cream, and carryout. Oakes has called it “one huge, fresh concept with a big piece of it being a place for people to meet, sit down, and enjoy food or freshly prepared grab-and-go.” Oakes got his start working at his father’s roadside vegetable stand. Twenty years ago, he opened Oakes Farms Market on Davis Boulevard with his late father, Frank Oakes, who established the Naples organic general store Food & Thought. Today, he’s the CEO of Oakes Farms, which he’s built into one of South Florida’s largest independent agribusinesses. He purchased the site of Seed to Table, a former Albertsons supermarket, for $5 million in 2014.

NAPLES IS AN AMAZING PLACE TO LIVE. YOU CAN ALWAYS BE OUTDOORS AND ACTIVE. WE HAVE GREAT SCHOOLS, LOW CRIME, AND A COLLECTION OF AMAZING, ACCOMPLISHED PEOPLE THAT CALL NAPLES HOME. THERE IS NOWHERE ELSE I WOULD RATHER BE.” Gourmands waited patiently for Seed to Table’s opening after delays caused by evolving plans, construction hiccups, and permitting issues because of the unique nature of the market. Oakes has noted: “It’s not a restaurant; it’s not a grocery store. It’s going to be unlike anything that exists, especially from the culinary end.” Some of Seed to Table’s ingredients and fresh inventory comes from Oakes’ local farms. The market also includes a book room, Thoughtful Threads boutique, and children’s playground. “It turned into a much bigger project than I originally anticipated,” Oakes has acknowledged.

Growing Sports and Recreation Options

Yes, there will be more pickleball—and a whole lot more. Whether you are looking for new places to run, hike, enjoy the fresh air, or play football, softball, or soccer, Collier County has several sizable parks projects in the works. They include the Paradise Coast Sports Complex northeast of Collier Boulevard and Interstate 75, an expanded East Naples Community Park near Bayshore Drive, and Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park near Immokalee and Oil Well roads. These additions, with a combined price tag of $150 million, will help alleviate the demand at current facilities, which boast a utilization rate of more than 90 percent. At the new Paradise Coast Sports Complex, located at City Gate Boulevard South and Brennan Drive, five multipurpose playing fields, a

030_FRESH INVESTMENTS_1019.indd 33

welcome center, a maintenance building, and restrooms are part of the 66-acre first phase under construction, slated to open in June 2020. Ultimately, the $70 million sportsplex will include 19 multipurpose fields on nearly 180 acres. It will play host to the Football University National Championships—already held in Naples—and invite international soccer clubs for clinics and exhibition games. East Naples Community Park—which has hosted the U.S. Open Pickleball Championships annually since its 2016 inception—is undergoing $23.8 million in upgrades. The first phase is adding 10 pickleball courts to the existing 54 courts. Electrical, water, and wireless upgrades are also included in the project, expected to be completed

by mid-2020. The second phase will add a 3,500seat stadium, 1,000 additional parking spots, and a community center and welcome center. The championships draw an estimated 2,100 visitors annually. Farther east, Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park has been on the drawing board for years but lacked funding. Now, the 48-acre project near the Collier County Fairgrounds can move forward, thanks to partial funding from the county’s voterapproved sales surtax that has been earmarked for significant projects. The $60-million-plus facility will include an aquatics center, a community center, athletic fields, an event lawn, a playground, basketball and racquetball courts, and walking paths. Looking over final proofs for his firm’s first book—containing some 500 pages of elegantly crisp, clean Old Florida–style designs—Matthew Kragh marvels at the volume. “I’m like, ‘How did we do all this in 10 years?’” he wonders. With a lifelong love of design, Kragh, 46, left the security of a local firm to launch his own in 34

Of his cottage-style exteriors with clean-lined interiors, he explains, “The buzzword that’s stuck is ‘coastal contemporary.’ We took it to the next level.” Kragh, known for his effusive energy, puts the firm’s total output at nearly 650 homes—about half of its design output. The other half are com-

The firm’s portfolio is celebrated in his new book, The Florida Architect. The secret behind managing a busy practice with several offices and his young family lies in his strict regimen. From about 5 to 8:30 every morning—when all is still and quiet—Kragh fuels up on caffeine and drills down on work matters and design. The early starts get him home for cherished evenings with his wife, Trista Sue, and their children, Maverick, 7, and Shiloh, 3. “I

get about three amazing hours of work done” in the early-morning hours, Kragh says. “It works out really well.”

Global Medical Success

He started with his own money and a drafting table in an apartment in the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany. Nearly 40 years later, arthroscopic surgery pioneer Reinhold Schmieding has never wavered from his drive to provide physicians and patients with minimally invasive procedures and improved outcomes. The company he founded, Arthrex, has become a global leader in arthroscopic surgery and minimally invasive orthopedics with the mission of “helping surgeons treat their patients better.” Born into a family of physicians in Michigan, Schmieding earned a physiology degree from

034_SUCCESSBLOOMS_1019-2.indd 35

Michigan State in 1977 and founded Arthrex in Munich in 1981. A decade later, in 1991, he moved the medical device design and manufacturing company to Naples. To date, Arthrex has developed more than 13,000 surgical devices and related procedures used in more than 150 countries. Nearly 3,000 of Arthrex’s 5,000-plus employees are based at its global headquarters in Naples. Consistently ranked among Fortune’s “Top 100 Places to Work,” Arthrex is a major employer in the region—one recognized for providing hightech jobs and pushing for innovation in local manufacturing training—and is active in community outreach programs. Helping surgeons treat their patients better “still is our primary mission and focus,” Schmieding told an audience in 2018, while accepting an honorary doctorate from Florida Gulf Coast University. “Continuous innovation in all aspects of our business has led to our global success.” Arthrex is privately owned and doesn’t rely on outside investors, which allows it to introduce products to market expeditiously and focus solely on surgeon and patient needs.

Cycles & Sandwiches

It’s a common misconception. The “fit” of Fit & Fuel Café and its adjacent Naples Cyclery doesn’t mean fitness. It’s for “fitting”—as in matching a bicyclist to a bicycle for better performance, com-

fort, and injury prevention. No matter. It still, well, fits perfectly with the culture Mark Trudeau and Peter Marsh have established at the popular businesses at the intersection of Vanderbilt Beach Road and U.S. 41. “There is a synergy for the two,” says Marsh, 33, a Naples High School graduate who started working at Naples Cyclery when he was 13. Trudeau offered Marsh a stake in the business long ago, before he opened the café in 2011. The inspiration for the café arose from a simple question Marsh asked himself: “How do we NAPLES ON THE GULF 2020

create more than a retail experience?” The answer has been clear, he says. “It appeals to a pretty wide range of folks.” Last year, the café expanded to meet a growing demand when the Subway sandwich franchise between the businesses closed. The interior hallway linking the businesses augments the culture in both directions. Those coming to get a flat tire changed at Naples Cyclery can wait next door “with a coffee, beer, or sandwich—not

necessarily in that order,” Marsh says. Conversely, café customers get a glimpse down the hall of “a bunch of skinny guys with smooth legs,” Marsh says, “and they ask, ‘What’s up with that?’ Getting people out on a bike, for fitness or for fun, is pretty fun for us.”

An Insider’s Guide to Naples

When life dealt her lemons, Jennifer Adams whipped up a successful lifestyle website and social media channels elevating the place she knows and loves: Naples. Adams was the editor of a local magazine until the publisher shuttered the operation. In 2014, when she launched The New Naples online (thenewnaples.com), Adams envisioned the site as a resource for young professionals looking for things to do on the weekend and volunteer opportunities. Thanks to SEO and social media, it evolved into a resource for visitors who were asking for recommendations about where to eat, stay, and go. “I recognized an opportunity to serve as a resource for people to get an authentic insider’s take they wouldn’t get unless they had a friend who lived here,” Adams explains. Her site has grown to more than 10,000 unique monthly visitors and nearly 18,000 monthly page views. Her advertising clients are 40-plus handpicked businesses and restaurants, who are pleased with getting a measurable return on investment and the carefully crafted content. “People recognize when they’re being sold to, and they tune out—especially online,” she says. “I pay close attention to what resonates with readers.” Though she’s frequently asked, this isn’t even her full-time job. Adams works at an advertising firm

and, with her husband, owns the local magazine The Inside Coup. “Everyone I meet thinks The New Naples is my full-time job,” says Adams. “I’m not quite there yet.”

American Dream: Growing a Family Business

When Ruben and Rosa Hernandez emigrated from Cuba to Naples in the early 1960s, Ruben cleaned boats and worked in air-conditioning, roofing, and landscaping to provide for the family. In 1984, the couple moved their tiny, homegrown flower and plant business from a shack on Bayshore Drive to Collier Boulevard. Today it stands as the thriving, full-service Golden Gate Nursery garden center. Two decades after its opening, Ruben died, and his sons took over. There was only one thing for Jorge and Rufino Hernandez to do: keep working hard. “They didn’t speak a lick of English, didn’t have any money or resources,” says Rufino Hernandez, 52, who owns and runs the nursery with Jorge, 58. Their parents “were the quintessential American dream—worked hard and saved. They did everything they could to provide a better existence for us.” Rufino took his business acumen and love

of botanicals a step farther when he opened the popular, upscale Garden District flower design shop in downtown Naples in 2004, the same year as his father’s passing. The award-winning Garden District has earned praise for its floral designs for weddings, galas, and private events, as well as multi-million-dollar events for the likes of Swarovski, Royal Bank of Scotland, and the March of Dimes. Golden Gate Nursery, on 20 acres, prides itself on excellent service and unique offerings, such as tools, citrus trees, and imported garden artwork. Two years ago, a 4,000-square-foot, open-air greenhouse was added to the 6,000-square-foot main store. Last year, the store was renovated and repainted red and white like an old barn to match the shack their parents once operated. In 2018, the Hernandez brothers were faced again with going it alone after Rosa died. Just as he had done before, Rufino poured himself into his work. “It was kind of my therapy, to be honest,” he says. “I like being at the nursery because I feel like I’m closer to them. We feel like the best way to honor them is to grow and succeed.”

Arts for All The Baker Museum at Artis—Naples is reborn.

Southwest Florida’s crown jewel of visual arts is shining bright after undergoing an extensive renovation and expansion following damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017. The $26.5 million Baker Museum renovation includes an elevated, open-air terrace offering sunset vistas and rotating outdoor exhibits, a performance and learning center, event space, and the lushly landscaped Norris Garden. The three-story museum reo38

pened to the public in late 2019 with major exhibitions, including Monet to Matisse: French Masterworks from the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and Iconic Works from the Permanent Collection, as well as the interactive outdoor Color Field sculpture exhibition. The Baker Museum is the first phase of a $150 million campus masterplan to create flexible spaces for interactions between people, art, and nature. Opened in 1989, the Artis—Naples campus at Pelican Bay is the home of the renowned Naples

Golfing in Naples

Tee Time

FLORIDA’S GOLF CAPITAL INVITES YOUR GAME

Did you know that Collier County has more than 90 public and private golf courses? Or that the Naples–Marco Island area has the most holes per capita nationwide? The area has attracted the most renowned golf course designers to create new courses and renovate long-established ones. It also is a favorite destination for national professional and amateur tournaments. This makes Naples the ideal place to perfect your game. Here are courses that are open to the public—a “tee-rific” place to start.

Arrowhead Golf Course

2205 Heritage Greens Drive, Naples Par/yardage: 72/6,832 Consistently voted “Best Public Golf Course” in regional polls, Arrowhead features 16 lakes, sculpted fairways, and contoured greens. Warm up on the grass practice range and putting green. 44

Eagle Lakes Golf Club

18100 Royal Tree Pkwy., Naples Par/yardage: 72/7,177 This course matches up against the lowest handicappers while providing casual players with a one-of-a-kind Everglades golf experience. Keep your eye out for abundant wildlife, including a pair of American bald eagles and other “birdies.”

Hibiscus Golf Club

5375 Hibiscus Drive, Naples Par/yardage: 72/6,476 Wide fairways, bunkered greens, and numerous lakes and streams make each hole a new challenge at this 18-hole course. It was originally created in 1969 but underwent a renovation, along with the clubhouse, in 2007. It recently underwent a major tee box renovation, as well as ongoing landscaping enhancement with 150 new trees and 400 shrubs.

Lely Resort (Flamingo Island) 8004 Lely Resort Blvd., Naples Par/yardage: 72/7,095 The oldest of three courses in Lely Resort—and one of two open to the public—Flamingo Island has been named a “Top 50 Resort Course” by Golf World magazine. Flamingo Island is the more challenging of the two public-play courses. The other is the welcoming Mustang course. Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club

851 Gulf Shore Blvd. N., Naples Par/yardage: 71/6,929 In 2016, Jack Nicklaus and John Sanford redesigned this historic, 1940s course at Southwest Florida’s only beachfront resort with an on-site championship layout. This is where then-11year-old Nicklaus broke 40 on nine holes for the first time in his life during a family vacation in 1951.

The championship golf course at the AAA Four Diamondrated Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club was redesigned in 2016 by Jack Nicklaus in collaboration with John Sanford. Featuring five tees, ranging from 4,800 yards to more than 6,900 yards, it is open to the public.

Tiburón Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort

JOHN BATEMAN

Tiburón Golf Club

Panther Run Golf Club

6005 Anthem Pkwy., Ave Maria Par/yardage: 72/7,532 This semi-private course is worth the drive to Ave Maria. With ample former agricultural land to work with, designer Gordon Lewis made sure to include all the length anyone could need. He also had fun with the design, throwing in elements such as a classic “Redan” green—sloping away from the entrance.

2620 Tiburón Drive, Naples Par/yardage: Gold Course: 72/7,382; Black Course: 72/6,949 Both courses are part of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, which do accommodate outside play. The longer Gold Course is home to the LPGA Tour’s CME Group Tour Championship and Greg Norman’s 24-player QBE Shootout PGA Tour event. The Black Course may be tougher, with more forced carries and tighter lines on firm, fast fairways.

TPC Treviso Bay

9800 Treviso Bay Blvd., Naples Par/yardage: 72/7,367 Part of the PGA Tour’s network of Tournament Players Club courses, Treviso Bay was built with the capacity to host professional golfers. A members’ course also open to outside play, Treviso Bay is lined with an Arthur Hills signature design element: endless humps, bumps, and nobs that frame the fairways and guard the green complexes.

Riviera Golf Club of Naples

48 Marseille Drive, Naples Par/yardage: 62/1,800 This executive-length course offers a mix of 11 par 3s, six par 4s, and a par 5 to ensure a player’s entire game is tested, and that every club in the bag is used. The course features Sunday Ultra-Dwarf greens, wide fairways, mature trees, bunkers, and back-9 ponds that attract wildlife.

Valencia Golf & Country Club

1725 Double Eagle Trail, Naples Par/yardage: 72/7,145 Renovated in 2018, Valencia is inviting, affordable, well-maintained, and as challenging as you want it to be. Ample practice grounds are another attraction at this daily-fee facility.

People are drawn to the Naples area for more than its year-round climate and unparalleled natural resources. The county’s population has consistently risen annually during the past decade. That’s a great advantage, Dalby explains, because it’s new fuel for the economy. It also means that both local and regional collaborations are key to ensuring that talent, services, infrastructure, and amenities keep up with demand.

Leadership Collier Foundation

Job shadowing at the Naples Planning Department

Pathways to the Future

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other,” John F. Kennedy once said. Each year—through the Leadership Collier Foundation—more than 100 residents and 4,000 students get the kind of invaluable experiences that Kennedy emphasized long ago. Since 1989, the Leadership Collier Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of the Greater Naples Chamber, has been making an indelible impact in Collier County by educating local business leaders about societal and economic challenges facing the community. Since then, the foundation has expanded its umbrella to foster engagement in both young professionals and high school students, while also connecting thousands of youth with real-time career experiences. Here is a snapshot of the foundation’s leadership-building programs: Leadership Collier: About 40 participants are selected for the program, which is spread over 10 sessions from September to March. Program 56

Young professionals participating in Growing Associates in Naples

participants learn about local issues and solutions in several fields—including healthcare, the environment, law enforcement, and education—through site visits to government offices, agencies, businesses, and nonprofits. Upon graduation, each class often chooses an advocacy project to tackle. Often, alumni remain engaged through the Leadership Collier Alumni Association. Growing Associates in Naples (GAIN): About 40 young professionals and emerging leaders, ages 21 to 40, are selected for this nine-week program from February through April. Its mission and format are similar to Leadership Collier. Youth Leadership Collier (YLC): About 32 rising high school seniors from a diverse mix of public and private schools are chosen to learn about what’s happening in the community and become inspired to make a difference. Now in its fifteenth year, YLC has reached more than 500

students and has inspired further engagement between the Chamber and future talent. Leadership Collier Foundation Vice President Amanda Beights says that, no matter which leadership program they go through, “many graduates feel it has positively impacted them personally and professionally. Our leadership programs inform, engage, and make a difference. We are proud of the work our alumni do in the community, for each other, and with each other, to make Collier County the best place to live, work, and visit.”

Lighting the Way

Through Work-Based Learning Getting local students prepared for their future careers is another goal of the Leadership Collier Foundation. Local leaders understand that connecting businesses with the skilled talent they need—and keeping younger generations in the Naples area—ensures the region’s economic prosperity. The foundation is aligned with Collier County Public Schools and Future Ready Collier, an initiative designed to ensure every high school senior graduates with a clear career path. Today, the foundation has expanded its pilot work-

based learning initiative. The goal is to connect local business owners and professionals in various fields with students who are interested in those careers through internships, worksite visits, one-on-one interviews, industry fairs, and in-school presentations. In the last year, 3,827 local students experienced work-based learning opportunities, and the foundation worked with 152 educators and 287 businesses to make it happen. “These internships allow our students to see what types of industry we have locally and consider future jobs here in Collier County,” says Collier County Public Schools Superintendent Kamela Patton, calling student-to-workplace interfacing “essential in creating our future workforce.” The foundation also works in tandem with private and technical schools, colleges, and nonprofit educational organizations, including Grace Place for Children and Families, Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida, and the Immokalee Foundation. “While our current focus is on high schoolers, we support several K-12 and post-graduate students,” says Beights. “Learners at all stages can reach out.” Naples Children’s Business Fair Another way the foundation is light-

A nationally recognized program, the fair is an entrepreneurial showcase for ages 6 to 17 that gives students the opportunity to create and sell their products and services to the public. In 2018, the Naples Children’s Business Fair was one of the top five largest fairs of its type in the nation, with more than 100 youth-run businesses and 150 student participants. Through internships, business fairs, mentoring, training sessions, and leadership programs, “students are able to see all that our community has to offer in terms of incredible opportunities and how valuable their voice and participation is as young people,” says Patton. “What more could you ask for?” Learn more: napleschamber.org/talent.

Home Sweet Home Naples is a remarkably beautiful city. That’s what the founders, inspired by the rich bay waters, thought when they named it after the romantic, eponymous town in Italy. Naples Reserve Repeats as Community of the Year for the Second Year in a Row Ask any Naples Reserve resident – they’ll tell you why they love living there. Maybe it’s the five tennis and four pickleball courts at the community’s Match Point complex, where they meet their neighbors for some friendly competition. Maybe it’s the community’s 22 lakes, where they like to kayak, paddleboard, bird-watch, or admire the sunset. It might be the meandering linear park that circles around the community, where they take their daily walk or bike ride amidst the carefully selected tropical landscaping that complements the scenic natural setting.

It’s all about choice at Naples Reserve, from how you have fun to where you live. Naples Reserve offers Southern Coastalinspired attached villa, single-family and custom estate homes by Southwest Florida’s premier homebuilders, including Ashton Woods, D.R. Horton, Florida Lifestyle Homes, KTS Homes, Lundstrom Development, Marvin Development, McGarvey Custom Homes and Stock Signature Homes. Homes are priced from the low $300,000s to more than $1 million, and buyers can choose among lakefront lots or homesites with preserve views. To see if this Community of the Year is the right choice for you, stop by at 14885 Naples Reserve Circle, just off U.S. 41, two miles southeast of the Collier Boulevard/CR 951 intersection and 10 minutes from I-75’s Exit 101.

This kind of attention to detail and anything-but-ordinary array of amenities helps explain why, for two years in a row, Naples Reserve and its developer iStar were honored with Sand Dollar Awards for Community of the Year ($500,000 to $1 million) and Best Landscape Design (Over $1 million) by the Collier Building Industry Association. The Sand Dollar Awards are its highest accolades, given annually in recognition of building, design, and marketing excellence in Collier County. Naples Reserve ranks as one of the best of the best. It’s also one of the best-selling communities in South Naples. Buyers keep falling for its laid back, lakefront lifestyle. Every day at Naples Reserve can be a vacation, spent lounging by the resort-style, zero-entry pool or gathering with friends for sunset cocktails at the Chat ‘n Chill Tiki Bar. Hop aboard one of the community’s Duffy electric boats to enjoy a day of exploring 125-acre Eagle Lake and its destination Kontiki Island. Play a while at the Walk & Wag dog park with your four-legged friend, then wind down at the lakeside fire pit.

Pine Ridge

Pelican Bay

Home to more than 6,800 residents,Pelican Bay is a sprawling community of 2,100-plus acres north of Pine Ridge Road, stretching to the gulf west of U.S. 41. There are at least 65 individual neighborhoods and condominiums, so Pelican Bay offers an incredibly wide variety of housing options and prices. Residents enjoy the exclusive beach club, 27 holes of golf, fitness, tennis, and on-site restaurants, as well as the fact that Artis—Naples and the Waterside Shops are close by. PRICE RANGE: $390,000 to $17.5 million

This neighborhood, which has been named the best neighborhood in the United States by a real estate research firm, is in a narrow corridor bounded by U.S. 41, and Goodlette-Frank, Vanderbilt Beach, and Pine Ridge roads. What makes it the best? The ranking was based on affordability, home-price appreciation, school scores, crime rates, unemployment rates, and property taxes. The properties in Pine Ridge are a lovely mix of older homes with character and big yards, and new construction in a range of styles. PRICE RANGE: $157,900 to $6.5 million

Port Royal

Port Royal lives up to its name. It’s home to titans of industry, leading philanthropists, and jetsetters. This stretch of land south of Old Naples wedged between the Gulf of Mexico and the bay represents the pinnacle of Southwest Florida real estate. On the gulf side, most of the homes

are grand mansions, ranging into 20,000 square feet and beyond. Those on the bayside can be a bit more modest, though not always. Regardless, be prepared to spend big money here. PRICE RANGE: $2.9 million to $42.5 million

Royal Harbor

Royal Harbor is a boater’s paradise. Located on Naples Bay, east of downtown, this neighborhood is a mix of old and new homes, most on the bay or on canals with gulf access. PRICE RANGE: $1.2 million to $5.5 million

Vanderbilt Beach

If you want to live on the water, this is one of the best places to do it. Located north of Pelican Bay, Vanderbilt Beach is split into two segments: beach and canal. On the beach is a mix of lowand high-rise condos and single-family homes, while the canals, with gulf access, offer a good selection of new and older single-family homes. PRICE RANGE: $173,500 to $6.9 million

Craft Brews on Tap LOCAL BREWERIES ELEVATE SIMPLE SUDS TO AN ART FORM Traditional in approach and independently operated, craft breweries appeal to our entrepreneurial spirit and sense of community. Brewpubs offer an inspired selection of handcrafted beer and food, old-fashioned games, and the chance to reconnect with family and friends. Here is a sampling of Naples favorites. Each offers live music and a family-friendly environment, many with dog-friendly outdoor seating. (Check websites for details.) BONE HOOK BREWING COMPANY Backstory: John English, Dave Genson, and Jason Vogel founded Bone Hook in 2016. They partnered with a local restaurant group to provide full-service lunch and dinner. Landmarks

Naples Pier A LANDMARK FOR THE AGES Photography by Dennis Goodman

T

he Naples Pier is the city’s most iconic landmark—a world within a world for longtime locals and first-time visitors. The most-photographed subject along the region’s shores, it has been called a “little United Nations” due to the diversity of languages sharing experiences during the height of tourist season. For generations, the pier has served as a fishing and communing spot for friends. If its planks could talk, legendary fishing stories would almost sound like whoppers. From dawn to dusk, in clear sky and storm, its many moods shift from tranquil and contemplative to turbulent and energizing. Four-time Naples Mayor Bill Barnett has observed that the Naples Pier is like “the soul of Naples. If you remember anything about Naples, you’ll remember the pier.” Here is a brief timeline of this special stretch at the west end of 12th Avenue South.

88

1888

The pier is constructed for visitors to the Naples Hotel—built at Third Street South by town cofounder Walter N. Halderman—and for potential investors in the brand-new resort town to disembark from the steamship, Fearless. The T-shaped, double-deck pier extends 600 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. A wooden track connects the pier to the hotel for easy transport of luggage, cargo, and mail.

Early 1900s The pier is a popular hub for social gatherings and as a recreational area with a bath house and changing rooms.

1910 to 1950s The community rallies to rebuild the pier following Mother Nature’s whims. During reconstructions, the pier becomes a single deck and is lengthened to 1,000 feet.

2015

The 1,100-foot pier undergoes a $2.7 million renovation, including installation of dense, durable Brazilian ipe hardwood planks and new restrooms, replicating original designs.

1960 Seasonal residents and 2017 The city repairs the pier generous philanthropists Lester J. and Dellora Angell Norris pay $130,000 to rebuild the pier following Hurricane Donna.

1970s The Norrises fund another restoration with the caveat that it will remain open to the public, free of charge.

for $183,000 following Hurricane Irma, reopening in August 2018.

Today Two community events—Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve fireworks celebrations—continue their long traditions. The Naples Pier Panorama webcam provides a 24-hour live stream showing daily happenings, sunsets, weather conditions, and celebrations to people all over the globe.
