FROM THE PUBLISHER

This issue is always one of my favorites. It combines all of my interests in one package—it checks all of the boxes, as they say. While I need to wait until weekends to get my hands dirty, Sarah Frey, our beautiful and entrepreneurial cover model, gets to live my dream life every day. Don’t get me wrong; like Sarah, I do enjoy the beautiful clothes and my 9-to-5 persona, but after hours you would not recognize me under my ball cap, knee-deep in sawdust, pets, and family. Speaking of family, as this issue was coming together and we were discussing the businesses that are now being run by second and third generations, I was once again reminded why so many people are choosing to stay or return to Naples and its small-town charm. It also brought to mind just how long I have been in this business. With 20-plus years in publishing, I have worked with the first- and second-generation owners of the businesses we mention (some now into their third generation!). Once, on an advertising sales call, Tom Hadinger of Hadinger Flooring asked me what I thought about the paint color of his building. I’m always eager to offer an opinion, so we spent the next 30 minutes contemplating what color he should paint his namesake exterior! Longevity, tradition, and sense of community are fundamental to the evolution of Naples, and are some of the most important reasons people choose to call it home. From artistically inspired interior design from the best in the industry to a Cinderella story of a successful woman who I really think could be my new BFF, and from magical second homes that fantasies are made of to enduring families that realize how important it is to continue the dream, I know you will enjoy this issue. Happy reading!

INSIDER Q&A

Frankly Speaking An acclaimed designer brings his eponymous firm to Naples

BOB COSCARELLI

Frank Ponterio has a relaxed kind of confidence that puts you at ease during a conversation, despite 27 years’ worth of accomplishments, fancy clients, and projects in the design world. Naples has been on his radar as a perfect place to make his stylish mark for a few years now, and he finally made a bold move and set up an official office in downtown Naples to welcome clients, showcase finishes, and draw out plans. While waiting and searching for the ideal home in Naples, he crashes in boutique hotels and then drives back to his wife in Anna Maria Island, where they have refurbished a chilled-out beach bungalow. He has fought hard to keep his business manageable and team tight, only taking on clients that fit with his company’s core values and mission. Read on to learn about this renaissance man. INSIDER Frankly Speaking CONTINUED

NI: Tell us about starting out in Chicago, as many Naples residents are also from Midwestern cities. Ponterio: I grew up outside Chicago in Lake Zurich, and my family still lives there. I went to school at the Harrington College of Design, which was in the top three for interiors at the time. I was immersed in architecture and interiors, graduated in a recession, and got a job in project management of high-end construction for three years. Then I started my own firm, which I knew I wanted to do. How do you define your design style? I have an authentic take on design that’s still super approachable. I don’t just do one style. I started doing residential legacy or heirloom homes, then an über-contemporary Nashville penthouse. We have architects on staff to complete interior architecture and we really understand that historical precedent doesn’t just mean 1920s, but 1970s as well. We understand design from an interior’s perspective and work

with project architects to get a backdrop for all our soft goods and decorating. What are some of your more unexpected projects and business expansions? We’ve done boutique hotels, country clubs, and private aviation. Additionally, we have a line of products, including furniture, lighting, and accessories that’s licensed in more than 100 countries. Most recently, we launched a fabric collection for Clarence House, an iconic brand repped by Holly Hunt that has a nice following. I’m the first guest designer to do a collection for Clarence House. Can you share some details about your family? I met my wife, Becky, when I had an internship and she was a rep selling high-end floor coverings. I told my project manager, “I’m going to marry her.” Six months later, we bought a house together

and have been married 26 years. Becky is still in the industry and does fun, custom projects. Our daughter, Isabella, graduated from Elon University in 2020 and works for Wintrust Bank. She lives in Chicago in the West Loop in a cool loft in the heart of it all. Isabella loves Naples and stayed with us here for six months during COVID-19. How are you settling into Naples? My office is on Pettit Square on the corner of Third Street South and 14th Avenue South—a great location. You’ll find me eating at Campiello or at Andre’s Steak House. I start my day at Bad Ass Coffee. When I have time for lunch, I’m at Ridgway’s eating outside before I walk back to work.

SILK FLORALS AND SUCCULENTS BLOOM Norine Fuller had a long career working with the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising before buying the 20-year-old, locally owned Sweetgrass Galleries in Naples a year ago. Her new endeavor collided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced people stuck at home to reevaluate their outdoor living spaces, and Fuller to expand her offerings. Sweetgrass Galleries in Trade Center Way specializes in sophisticated silk florals, trees, and natural greenery for commercial and residential interiors and exteriors.

38

Fuller handily adapted to customer demand. “Obviously, people have been spending more time on their patios, so we have a whole section of UV-protected florals that can go in the sunshine and not fade. They can withstand Naples’ strong elements,” she says. “Another area that we have found a great kind of new market for is our grasses. They’re seen throughout South Florida.” She says the care-free beauty of silk arrangements for outdoor walkways and porch corners is trending. “We get a few customers almost every month who are switching from the real to the silk,” she notes. Succulents are also enjoying a wave of popularity, and they “seem to be a winner for everyone,” says Fuller. Sweetgrass recently ventured into the realm of wedding design. Simone Schmitt, owner of Naples Neon, has a suggestion: a customizable, colorful neon sign that conveys a word, phrase, or logo exactly as you’d like it. Her signs come in solid neon colors, as well as remote-operated, LED, colorchanging lights. Originally from Germany, Schmitt worked for a Florida sign company for several years before moving to Naples and starting her business in 2019. At first, Schmitt’s signs were being ordered for weddings; she worked closely with wedding planners and brides to create the perfect sign. However, the pandemic stalled weddings and inspired many people to build in-home gyms. As a result, Schmitt is receiving an uptick in requests for motivational signs to enhance the aesthetic of her clients’ new workout spaces. She points out that the signs are durable, so they’re suitable for on-the-go travel for influencers, podcasters, or if they simply need to be moved. (naplesneon.com) — ¾ Mackenzie Griffith

Launched in 2010, Noonday Collection sells socially conscious jewelry and accessories made by artisans in vulnerable communities around the globe, with the goal to alleviate poverty through entrepreneurship. Carin Phillips is what the company calls an “ambassador”—¾someone who sells the handmade jewelry and accessories in their own communities and shares the story of how the artisans’ linkage to a worldwide marketplace has improved their lives. “Noonday goes and helps them to not only design products that we can sell in the United States, but also to help them to learn business skills,” Phillips explains. Phillips and Monique Frost are the only sellers of the fashion brand in Naples. Their pop-up shops selling Noonday Collection occur once a month at the Mercato. Many products incorporate natural fibers and

TRUE HOME LUXURY organic materials, such as tagua or paper seeds, leather, and glass beads. The handbags, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets offer modern flair and are ideal for Naples because the materials have a “beach kind of feel,” says Phillips. Knowing that the company has partnered with artisans in 14 countries makes Phillips feel good about being an ambassador for Noonday Collection. “It’s more of a holistic approach and not just giving a handout to individuals who are in vulnerable situations,” she says. EDIBLE GARDEN Grows at Centers for the Arts Summer campers at the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs literally dug the organization’s new Edible Garden, where they learned the meaning behind farm-totable and enjoyed the fruits of their labor. “We’ve got some hydroponics and organic gardening of vegetables and herbs that they can later harvest and use in our teaching kitchen,” says Christine Elzinga, marketing and creative director at the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs. The centers’ array of artistic summer camps have for years incorporated “cookonomics” courses to teach young children about healthy eating, food preparation, cooking, and cultural cuisine. The Edible Garden was installed behind the Performing Arts Center on Bonita Beach Road to extend, and build on, these concepts. Besides summer camp, the garden is open for all ages, and community members are invited to volunteer at the garden. Elzinga says healthy cooking classes for adults is something the organization is considering for the future. (artcenterbonita.org) —Alexis Carson

Methodical, patient, and attentive may not be the first qualities that come to mind when looking for a bespoke luxury interior designer, but Glenn Midnet of Design West is not your typical designer. The master of color, space planning, and functionality is part therapist and part family peacekeeper—bringing balance and happiness to individuals through their home. His company’s slogan is, “Every design begins with an even better story—yours,” and he means it. That’s why Midnet, an admitted perfectionist and workaholic, not only created a design survey to get at the client’s most important wants and needs, but then his dream team implemented a 196-step program guaranteed to keep each project meticulously organized. “There is no room for chaos in interior design, if you ask me,” Midnet says emphatically. While Midnet loves the finer things, he is quick to reflect that his affinity for interiors originally came from humbler beginnings: watching his mom, Alyce, change out her curtains from winter to spring or rearrange the living room furniture to give it a refresh. Years later, in 2009, Midnet was able to honor his late mom’s love of decor and her fight with breast cancer by designing and obtaining the U.S. patent for a pink ribbon chair—named The Alyce—to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. A champion of symmetry, Midnet explains that “balance has a very relaxing and calming effect.” And perhaps not just in design. Midnet has two daughters, two sons, and even two cats with his wife of 34 years, Kathleen. A New York City native, Midnet first relocated to Naples and founded Design West here in 1994 because he was working frequently in the area. While business may have brought him to Naples, the lifestyle is what keeps him here. (dwest.com) —Patty Adams Martinez

here’s a storied road in Bonita Beach where mansions and condominiums mingle happily alongside one another. Sandwiched between the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Everglades to the east, Hickory Boulevard exudes the laid-back, jumbled charm this beach town wears so well. “Hickory Boulevard feels like a small beach town, but it is close by the sophistication of Naples. It is the best of both worlds,” says principal interior designer Kira Krümm of Naples-based Koastal Design Group. Sited amid the Southwest Florida jewel, this luxurious, coastalstyle manse began as a spec home, but that changed after an Illinois couple fell madly in love with it. And with the Gulf as a backyard, six en-suite bedrooms, and nearly 5,000 square feet of warm coastal living, there is a lot to be smitten with. “The couple is retired and has multiple homes. This is their beach home, and they personalized it,” Krümm explains. “These clients have grown children and wanted a property with the location and the feel to attract their children for the holidays and their friends during season.” When stepping from the private elevator, everyone is wowed by the sweeping Gulf views afforded by the great room’s pocketed

52

sliding glass doors. The entire dwelling creates a conscious connection with the nature surrounding it. Taking a cue from the sand and the sea, Krümm applied a neutral color palette throughout. “I design in neutrals, making texture especially important because it adds visual interest,” she says. “Then I bring in splashes of color

inspired by nature.” For warmth, she added European oak flooring and wood finishes on the furnishings. A cristallo quartzite stone fireplace surround on the linear gas fireplace further enhances the subtle backgrounds. Transom windows in the open space provide additional natural light without sacrificing privacy. Special attention was given to the home’s lofty ceilings, such as the great room’s 12-foot-high expanse. “I add detail to ceilings without them becoming the voice of the room,” says the designer. “I prefer less is more, like white on white and box beams to keep the space light and airy and for character and texture.” To further emphasize height and scale, bar cabinetry at the far

051_ABODE_1021.indd 53

end of the great room spans upward to the top of the wall. Sumptuous natural stone quartzite and marble countertops set the stage in the kitchen for the space’s casually elegant vibe. Referencing the home’s beachy roots, the dining table chairs feature woven backs and teak frames. Host chairs are slipcovered in relaxed linen and juxtapose interestingly against the architecturally designed light fixtures above the dining table and kitchen island. Land cannot be seen from any of the windows in the second-floor master bedroom, creating the illusion of the room floating on water. The white shell color and gray and yellow accents further heighten the bedroom’s calming atmosphere. Clad in a cotton blend, the 96-inch-high tufted headboard and striking custom bedding come together to generate the ultimate luxury of pure softness. “The clients enjoyed the cube, beanbag-like ottomans next to the slipcovered swivel chairs so much, they ordered them for another home,” the designer says. Decorative square Carrara marble inserts add a stately feel of quality and elegance in the master bath. Other luxury elements for the spacious bath are his and her closets and a freestanding tub. “I rely on my knowledge of this market after 20 years,” says the designer. “I know that most clients will ask for a sit-down vanity. The days of leaning over a sink to put on makeup are over.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2021

From left: The fourth guest bedroom has a boho feel; the marble and stone master bath.

One of Krümm’s favorite rooms is the flex room. It works as a den/bedroom and is next to the master bedroom. Slipcovered chairs at the work space and whitewashed custom wood cabinetry contribute to the relaxed tone. “Today a lot of people have flex rooms beside the master bedroom,” Krümm says. The first two guest bedrooms are on the main floor. The tailored

54

first guest bedroom is awash in creams and aqua. Punctuated with tropical greens and aquas on the bedding, rugs, and accessories, the second guest bedroom evokes Florida’s tropical splendor. The third and fourth guest bedrooms are on the second floor and face east. The fourth bedroom is spacious and sports a bit of a boho feel. All about gray and white, the third guest bedroom is the smallest and coziest room in the house. From the tiniest nooks to the largest hideaways, this is “a magnificent home,” says Krümm. “It is expansive and impressive with quality materials, but at the same time is very cozy … like a beach cottage.” «

INSPIRED LIVING

COTTAGE to the Core

The Cottagecore aesthetic attracts devotees of the PASTORAL LIFESTYLE By Liza Grant Smith If the hustle and bustle of everyday life makes you dream of moving to the countryside for a simpler, more pastoral lifestyle, then you understand the allure of Cottagecore. The romanticized Cottagecore aesthetic—which extends to everything from lifestyle to personal style to decor—has recently gained immense popularity, thanks, in part, to our time spent in quarantine embracing homebound hobbies (sourdough starter, anyone?) and comfort over complexity. Cottagecore has staying power, however,

56

and it continues to influence interior design with its cozy, soft, natural feel. Absent is the previously coveted minimalist style. Cottagecore is all about layers—of fabric, weathered decorative accents, and botanical, toile, and chintz patterns and prints. Vintage pieces add a historical authenticity to the look, while items like dried herbs or kitchen canisters kept on the countertop show signs of the self-reliant lifestyle heralded by Cottagecore. The goal is to create an escapist hideaway that exudes the comfort

and simplicity of idealized rural living. To fall in love with Cottagecore, you don’t have to believe in the “happily ever after”—you just have to embrace the “once upon a time.” A deep dive into the movement might take a while, but here are three ways to dip your proverbial toe in the Cottagecore waters. INDOOR PLANTS AND GARDENING Bringing the outdoors in with living plants is an easy way to highlight nature, soften a space,

NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

056_INSPIREDLIVING_1021.indd 56

9/8/21 11:20 AM

and up your Cottagecore quotient. Be sure to choose plants that match the daily sun available in the spots you select. Ran out of shelves to put your plants on? Consider elevating your leafy friends with plant hangers from Braid & Wood Design Studio available at Jardin Floral Design in Naples. Those with a DIY spirit and green thumb can also opt for terrariums. Not only does the creation process feed into a Cottagecore self-sufficiency, the eye-catching end result is living art. Jardin has everything from an instructional handbook to tiny tools to get you started. (jardinfdflowers.com) SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW Interspersing vintage pieces in your overall design will help your look be truly authentic and unique. Go treasure hunting at local vintage and consignment furniture spots, like Chesterdales Home & Garden, and find items that speak to you. Be on the lookout for big pieces (farmhouse

tables, rocking chairs) as well as small accents (watering cans, baskets) that will help you build the overall aesthetic. (chesterdales.com) In terms of new pieces, natural materials in warm tones are key. Both stone and wood fit that bill, as well as organic fabric and upholstery in patterns like toile and plaid. Feel free to pursue a more traditional Cottagecore look or a modern interpretation of the style—there are no strict rules when it comes to this trend. THINK BOTANICAL Look for pieces that celebrate nature. This includes subjects like wildflowers, butterflies, mushrooms, and other botanicals. Anna Weatherley’s hand-painted dinnerware, available locally through Arabesque of Naples, frequently draws inspiration from these subjects. Don’t be afraid to mix collections and patterns—it all speaks to the ease of Cottagecore. (arabesqueofnaples.com) For those adverse to long-term commitment,

Anna Weatherley’s hand-painted dinnerware is available locally through Arabesque of Naples.

consider a change in bedding. Letting your duvet run wild with flora, like Matouk’s Pomegranate duvet available through Gattle’s, can instantly awaken your bedroom with a Cottagecore vibe. (gattles.com)

The stunning brass metals in the mirror and sconces add a sense of warmth to this space. We love the mixture of metals as it really adds such character to a small space.” Naples (reneegaddis.com)

ABODE THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!

CABANA COCKTAILS

Expert insight into hosting a posh poolside party By Steven Stolman Photography by Nick Mele Ever since in-ground swimming pools began to appear on residential properties, poolside entertaining has been a popular pastime. Whether guests are actually in the water or simply gathering at water’s edge, there’s something intrinsically relaxed about this particular mise-en-scène. All one has to do is look at style-centric photography—from Slim Aarons’ iconic shots to those organized by Hollywood press agents at places like The Beverly Hills Hotel—to understand the allure of socializing near a sparkling body of chlorinated water. Add to this a little architectural element such as a pool house or its more modest cousin, the cabana, and you’ve got a perfect venue for a party.

Many condos have cabanas that are separately deeded, especially if they’re blessed with generous decks or beach access. They range from glorified storage units to full-on entertaining spaces with bathrooms, wet bars, and air conditioning, which—given the nature of a cabana—seems like an exercise in futility.

Our own cabana is something inbetween. It has a powder room and a separate shower, along with a wet bar and an undercounter fridge, but that’s about it. Because it’s only protected from the elements by a set of accordion shutters, the sun and salt air wreak havoc; we’ve seen settees decompose before our eyes and barstools rust practically overnight. Rather than fight it, our strategy is to keep decor to a minimum and use the most weatherresistant furnishings we can find. Still, we love having our little poolside snug and enjoy sharing it with others. Early on, I found a wonderful photo of a very young Lilly and Peter Pulitzer and their pet monkey, Goony. In the background is a stunning sailfish mounted on the wall. And wouldn’t you know it, Amazon sells realistic replicas of exactly the same fish. Who could resist? Other decorative elements include carved coconut heads from the Bahamas and, for a little touch of kitsch, photos of select cast members from the 1960s TV show Gilligan’s Island. It’s not haute decor, but it makes us happy and guests seem to enjoy it—especially when cocktails are involved.

TIPS for a Successful Cabana Cocktail Gathering »

4

1

Regardless of whether you go electronic or printed, choose a lively, aquaticthemed invitation, something that sets the tone and can act as inspiration for every other creative decision. Be clear that it will be an outdoor event, as that will inform guests’ clothing choices. Memories of COVID and its wrath are still fresh, and an alfresco venue can go a long way in reassuring attendees that they will be safe and comfortable.

2

Hire a bartender at the very least. A server, who can pass hors d’oeuvres and continuously bus the area, is also a good idea. There’s nothing worse than not being able to be a guest at your own party because you are too busy making drinks or passing a tray. Provide your bartender with a crisp T-shirt that matches the invitation and allow him or her to wear shorts and sneakers.

3

Invest in stylish disposable plastic barware. It is poolside, after all. One broken glass can spell disaster, not just for you and your guests but, if you live in a condo, for your neighbors too. The pool will have to be closed and drained, and you will most likely be forced to move. Just don’t do it.

62

Continue your theme with a little bit of decor. It can be as subtle as cocktail napkins that coordinate with the invitation or a few outdoor throw pillows to scatter around the area. A little effort can reap big dividends.

5

Pay attention to lighting. Real candles invariably blow out, and glass hurricanes or lanterns present the same breakage threat as glass barware. But there are all sorts of batteryoperated or rechargeable outdoor lighting options, from giant glowing plastic globes to petite café lamps.

6

Serve the simplest food imaginable. Chips and dip are always a hit. A crudités basket is a nice gesture, but often goes untouched. Be sensible with your menu and consider that you will have limited refrigeration, along with the distinct possibility of a stiff breeze or bugs. This is not the time or place for an extravagant cheeseboard, no matter what Pinterest tells you. However, if you own a chafing dish, cocktail weenies and a good, strong mustard are always a crowd-pleaser. Be sure to have an obvious receptacle for used toothpicks—many folks don’t consider this.

7

Have enough ice. This can be your bartender’s responsibility, but buy twice as much as you think you’ll need. Whether you are just serving rosé and sparkling water or a full bar, stock it generously and invest in a nice wine cooler. Always have something for non-imbibers too—avoid anything too sweet or syrupy. Save the blender drinks, and forget about signature cocktails. Well-meaning guests accept the signature cocktail, take one sip, and immediately look for a place to discretely stash it before making a beeline to the bar for a real drink.

eep in the pine forests of Montana, about a halfhour’s drive from Missoula, a new resort is changing the game for sophisticated travelers with a passion for the great outdoors. The Green O—a riff on Greenough, the town closest to the property—is a gated enclave of 12 exclusive, adults-only wilderness retreats within a 37,000-acre cattle and bison ranch that also houses the sprawling Resort at Paws Up. Literally, The Green O is situated about 450 yards from the closest point of contact with Paws Up; figuratively, it is miles apart. Because Paws Up, with its glamping tents and timber cabins, is geared toward families, the owners created this private sanctuary for couples and solo travelers seeking a refined experience with the biggest luxury of all: peace and quiet. By day, Green O guests can participate in all the wilderness adventures of the greater resort, including ATV exploration, horseback riding, hiking, fly-fishing, and clay shooting, but they can return to the tranquility of a secluded treehouse, the intimacy of cocktails by the fire, and the culinary theater of a nine-course tasting menu by a master chef. The best part? Privacy. The Green O is maxed out at 12 homes, or 24 guests, says Laurence Lipson, who co-founded Paws Up and The Green O with his late father, Dave, and his father’s wife, Nadine. “It was really critical to keep it small and intimate. It enables us to offer a more personalized level of service.” Elevated design was a top priority. The Lipsons envisioned freestanding houses with innovative forms and a

modern spin on Montana’s architectural vernacular. While native materials like Douglas fir and local stone ground each “haus” in sustainability, the biggest driving point of the design is glass. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls that blur boundaries act as a transparent skin between interior spaces and the timberland of Big Sky Country. The feeling is one of living outdoors. Of the four original designs, the Tree Haus is the most eye-popping. Lipson calls it “an architectural gem in the forest,” pointing to its surprising modern architecture based on hexagonal shapes and an inner cylindrical core around which spaces are oriented. Climbing a spiral staircase to the third level, like a child in a secret clubhouse, you arrive at a spacious bedroom suite with a bird’s-eye view of the ponderosas and larches. Clad in Douglas fir and stone, the Round Haus offers curved openings into the wilderness and a panoramic view. Its footprint is inspired by the infinity sign, with two interrelating loops that form living and sleeping quarters. The Green Haus is the model of sustainability, with a live roof that acts as insulation and camouflage within nature—and ups the wow factor of its rooftop deck. The Green Haus’ coolest feature is a bedroom skylight, roughly the dimensions of a king-size bed, that makes you feel like you’re sleeping under the stars. The Light Haus is the largest of the four plans and is designed as a house within a house. The greenhouse-like bedroom, with glass on three sides, pushes out of the main structure into the woods for consummate forest bathing. Throughout The Green O, sensitivity to the environment is key. Woods are stained to match the coloration of the tree bark, so buildings can disappear into the woodland. The top-

soil used around the property comes from the working cattle and bison ranch, complete with growing oats, barley, and alfalfa. Even the cart paths are gravel mixed with recycled asphalt millings to keep the dust down and the noise to a minimum. But what’s a haus in the woods without a proper meal and a fortifying cocktail or two? The heart of The Green O is the Social Haus— a lodge, if you will—presided over by chef Brandon Cunningham, a transplant from Portland, Oregon, who cooks with the seasons and favors locally foraged, farmed, and raised ingredients like elk, bison, huckleberries, and honeycomb. Dinner at Social Haus is a ninecourse feast, where exquisitely crafted small plates are presented by the chefs themselves, adding to the club-like atmosphere of the place. At The Green O, the forest-dwelling concept is elevated to its highest purpose: an immersion in nature with the promise of adventure and the luxury of high design. (thegreeno.com) «

ESCAPE TRAVEL JOURNAL

Always ROAMING Robin L. Davis was fascinated with history books that transported her to faraway places as a child. As a nod to her passion, she majored in history at Arcadia University and studied abroad for a year in Vienna and London. Davis, whose diverse background includes real estate and interior styling, moved to Naples from Rowayton, Connecticut, to join her mother—a local since the mid ’80s—in late 2018. Travel has remained a constant throughout her myriad experiences. Early in her married life, she lived in Hong Kong for four years, where her daughter was born. For years, she’s had the opportunity to travel to the Middle East to visit her daughter and grandsons living in Kuwait. “I have perpetual wanderlust,” says Davis. “I love exploring and learning about different cultures and meeting people. I’m extremely visual so I love experiencing cuisine, architecture, gardens, river trips, museums....” —Allison Wolfe Reckson

NI: What adventures are you dreaming about? Davis: I’d love to return to Austria or England again. I probably won’t travel internationally for another year. Domestically, since I’m new to the South, I’d like to explore coastal Florida and Charleston, South Carolina. What’s your favorite city and why? London. Besides the lack of a language barrier, it is the city I could most easily see myself living in on a full-time basis. I love the history and all of the royal pomp and circumstance. And it’s a great place to launch a weekend getaway to other parts of the UK or the continent.

Clockwise from top: London; Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien in Vienna; Salzburg, Austria; the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong.

What’s on your bucket list? Paris, Orient Express, and Italy What has been the most spectacular hotel you’ve stayed in? The Peninsula Bangkok, Thailand. The setting on the Chao Phraya River and the exotic Southeast Asian decor were exquisite. The best museums are where? Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien in Vienna, Austria, or the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Incredible artwork as well as the buildings which house the paintings.

What has been your most memorable culinary experience? A large dinner party at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong. What are your most trusted travel resources? I usually rely on personal friends and Instagram friends for ideas and suggestions. Nothing beats personal experience! One Instagram account, @kimhopkinstravel, is a fabulous source. What are your travel must-haves? For checked luggage, I’m old-school classic Hartmann. For carry-on and my travel purse, I can’t live without my Longchamp bags. They’re lightweight nylon of varying sizes and colors, expandable, and fold up into small flat “bundles” when not in use. Your favorite shopping was where? Back in the day, Hong Kong and the New Territories. The factories were amazing for porcelain, carpets, clothing, linens. Where do you find design inspiration when traveling? I prefer to walk everywhere I can. To take in the smells, colors, sounds...the architecture, window shopping, antique stores, gardens, and wildlife. And the food—presentation is critical!

MAXIMUM Fun

Mini’s NEW-LOOK John Cooper Works convertible puts the thrill back in driving By Howard Walker Cars have gotten so serious. All lane-departure warnings and advanced driver-assist, all active braking and automatic lane-centering. Engage autopilot in a Tesla and it’s no wonder drivers fall asleep at the wheel. Yes, it’s about keeping you safe and secure. But all this automotive nannying tends to make driving about as much fun as watching paint dry. That’s why, before we all start getting piloted around in our autonomous, self-driving, electric SUVs, you need a Mini—especially a Mini convertible. And for more smiles than a can of laughing gas, opt for the adorable Mini John Cooper Works convertible. This is the most hilarious, grin-inducing, endorphin-packed bundle of testosterone72

enriched joy I’ve driven in ages. And that includes 200-mph supercars and thundering 700-horsepower sedans. Here is a true analog car in a digital world, a throwback to the Swinging ’60s. It is pure Michael Caine in The Italian Job and Austin “Shagadelic” Powers. Yeah, baby. The instant you slide behind the wheel, toggle the switch that whizzes the canvas roof back in 18 seconds, pull the shift into drive, and hit it, you just can’t help but smirk. It’s a feeling akin to being a kid on Christmas morning or getting your first puppy. This pint-sized pocket-rocket transforms every mundane trip—dry cleaners, here we come—into a thrill ride. It’s the surgical preci-

sion of the steering, the tightness of the suspension, the superglue-like grip of the tires. There are go-karts that don’t feel this nimble or alive. While the base Mini convertible comes with a turbocharged 3-cylinder motor packing a meager 134-horsepower (which, come on, there are Toro ride-on mowers with more power) it’s the John Cooper Works you’ll want. Its feisty 2-liter turbo 4-cylinder cranks out 228 horses. Coupled to a quick-shifting 8-speed automatic, it’ll slingshot the drop-top from standstill to 60 mph in a zippy 6.3 seconds. In case you’re wondering about that John Cooper Works badge, it’s an homage to the legendary British racer John Cooper. Back in 1961, he spruced up the very first Mini to create

the Mini Cooper and built racing versions that dominated motorsports for decades. In our Zesty Yellow JCW convertible—a new color for 2022—the Cooper connection means an extra 39 horsepower, a sports exhaust that delivers a symphony of lovely crackles and pops, sports suspension and Brembo brakes, and eye-popping 18-inch JCW Track Spoke alloys. You also get some body add-ons, like

that horizontal red bar across the front grille and a bold rear diffuser. Inside there are JCW paddle shifters and a salami-thick napa leather wheel, plus grippy sports seats with extra side and under-thigh bolstering. Delve into the options list to customize your Cooper with everything from a full body kit and two-tone paint to adjustable suspension and even a Union Jack flag woven into the canvas top. Yes, there’s a compromise or two. The tradeoff for that no-roll cornering is a ride that’s pretty firm and fidgety. In sport mode, the front wheels

will struggle for grip when you hit the gas as red lights turn green. And if you’re planning on sharing the fun with friends, that rear seat is fairly tight on kneeroom. In fact, it’s best used for extra luggage space to compensate for the teeny trunk. Plus, regardless of whether the top is up or down, rear visibility is also a challenge. But I love this car. I adore the way it makes every trip a blast, the open-air feel, and the look. You’ll pay $38,900 for a 2022 JCW convertible, but you’ll want to add the $6,000 Iconic trim package to get upgraded navigation and the head-up display, along with dynamic damper control and a booming Harman/Kardon stereo. All totaled, you’re looking at around $46,000 very nicely loaded. As for putting the fun back in driving and a huge smile on your face? Priceless. Absolutely priceless. «

Green HORNET

Italian boatbuilder Tecnomar has partnered with Lamborghini to create a 4,000-horsepower, supercar-inspired speed demon By Howard Walker

T

hey call the shimmering shade of metallic green Verde Gea. It’s the same dark olive hue Lamborghini uses on its outrageous, $2.6-million Sián supercar, the most powerful road-going Lambo ever built, and the company’s first-ever hybrid. Look closely and you’ll spy a multitude of Lamborghini-esque design cues and features. The steering wheel is modeled after the one on the Aventador supercar, minus the airbag and paddle shifters, naturally. As for those high-back, carbon-fiber helm seats, they’re just like those in Lamborghini’s hard-core Huracán Evo, even down to the yellow racing seatbelts. What you have here with this all-new, $3.5-million Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is nothing less than a true Lamborghini for the sea. While plenty of luxury carmakers have partnered with boatbuilders to attach their badge to a yacht—Aston Martin, Porsche, Bugatti, and Lexus, to name a few—none of the efforts has been as convincing or as authentic as this. Lamborghini’s Centro Stile designers worked closely with Tuscany-based Tecnomar (part of the Italian Sea Group) to

74

come up with the jaw-dropping lines of this bold 63-footer. And this is the height of visual drama. From its needle-nosed bow to its angled hull windows, its open transom to its swept-back, carbon-fiber hardtop, this superboat screams performance. One interesting omission is the source of the 63’s awesome power. Even though Lamborghini has a marine division that builds 900-horsepower marine V-12 gas engines for use in World Offshore Series race boats, it seems they weren’t quite potent enough for the waterborne Lambo. Instead, the 63 features twin Germanbuilt MAN V-12 turbo diesels cranking out 2,000 horsepower a piece. Mated to drag-reducing surface drives, they punch this 24-ton rocket ship to a top speed of almost 70 mph, while throwing up massive rooster tails out the back. Throttle back to a more sedate 45 mph, and the 63 should be able to run for more than 240 miles between fill-ups of its 950-gallon tank. That’s Miami to Nassau with fuel to spare. The big Lamborghini will have no trouble tackling washing machine seas if the weather takes a turn for the worse. The hull

ANGELA TALLEY

t was a damp, cold day in southern Illinois, where Sarah Frey was working several years ago, when warm Gulf breezes drifted into her consciousness. That sensation piqued her interest, so she pulled out a map. Frey, founder and CEO of Frey Farms, a multi-state fresh produce and beverage company, is in the farm business, and has always liked looking at land. She receives a fair number of overtures via email, but this one property in Naples caught her eye. Frey already knew Naples and South Florida well, with produce operations nearby and having snuck in a couple mini vacations at the beach resorts. “When I saw the listing for the house and land, about two acres at that point, I realized it was close to Fifth Avenue and the beach, which was great,” she says. “It was in the middle of nowhere, another plus. I also liked that it was an auction situation. I like auctions. The next day, I flew down to check it out. After two hours of walking around the grounds, the property agent finally said to me, ‘Don’t you want to see the house?’” After that initial purchase, Frey, a single mother of two teenage sons, spent several years acquiring adjoining lots, and she now has slightly more than 10 acres. Much of the property is filled with fun, family-centric elements. Lovely garden paths, a swimming pool, a guesthouse, ponds, an outdoor kitchen, and a fire pit are thoughtfully placed throughout the abundantly shaded property. As you walk along, you can feast your eyes on specimen plantings and blooming flowers. It’s an ideal retreat for when she steps off the tractor and out of her boots into her flip-flops. “We have farms in south central and north Florida, in Hendry County, Newberry, Parrish, and LaBelle,” she notes. “There’s a lot to this project and it’s still a work in progress,” Frey adds. “I wanted to keep everything in a natural environment and bring the outside in. I also wanted to be creative and reuse what was here already. But mostly, I wanted this to be a new home for my family, for Luke, Will, and me.” It’s been a long and winding road from pulling herself out of rural poverty by selling melons to becoming a successful business owner and mother, among the many other roles she has played along the way. The youngest child of a very large brood, Frey took over the small

family farm in southern Illinois at the age of 17 and grew it into a business in which her four older brothers, Leonard, John, Harley, and Ted, were able to come back from college, one by one, and join her in the growing enterprise. WOMAN OF REINVENTION Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose is a central theme in Frey’s life and work, and is part of the plan for her Naples house. “Pulling this Naples property together is like what we do on the farms. I’ve taken that knowledge and applied it to my Naples home,” she says. Unbeknownst to Frey, a farm she previously bought at auction on Sears Farm Road in LaBelle, had been a manufacturing site for the famous Sears Kit homes, popular from about 1910 to 1940. When the mill shut down, the workers deconstructed their own kit homes, loaded them up, and moved away, leaving behind the house footings. “When we were clearing Sears Farm Road to plant a melon crop, we found all these stones and pieces of the mill. It almost felt like a ghost town. But, rather than throwing them out, we gradually brought the large keystones to the new property in Naples, where they are now the walls of two retaining ponds. I love that we were able to reuse these amazing pieces of Florida history in a different way, still serving as foundational stones, still looking gorgeous all stacked together. I love that.” Back in Naples, architect Robert Herscoe, of Herscoe Hajjar Architects, worked closely with Frey to modify the elegant, Spanish-style structure. “Robert redesigned the house so that it would work for my family, so that we could live inside and outside the home,” Frey reports. Landscape architect Mike Behrndt of Environmental Designs pointed Frey in the right direction. “Mike clearly saw my vision for this property and helped me keep things true to Florida, using natural, native hardscapes,” she says. Rey Doria Landscaping handled the sourcing of the bigger trees, including Canary palms, corkscrew pines, poincianas with large orange flowers, and many others. “We bought several large trees and then pulled some from other locations, adding to the already mature grove of oak trees,” Frey explains. “Rey’s team did a great job placing everything.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2021

One minute I’m in a backhoe, the next minute I’m dressed up in designer outfits.”

Tom Riley, his son, Ben, and designer Amanda Hanes of Artisans’ Guild, also have been pivotal. “Tom and Ben set me straight on just what to include,” says Frey. “Amanda understood my goal of creating a space that is conducive to the way my family lives. I’m accustomed to the freedom and space that nature allows. I like lots of natural light and air. We’re incorporating large doors that can be pushed out of sight, and, in the addition, many floor-toceiling windows that let tons of light in.” TRACTOR MOM On top of all the work on the home front, Frey has spent the last seven years focusing on

her business, developing new and innovative products. She created Tsamma Watermelon Juice, which has become a popular Floridian drink. Another product, Sarah’s Home-Grown Agua Frescas, is a low-sugar, award-winning juice. “One of our goals is to find uses for the fruit that’s not pretty enough to sell. Turns out that ugly fruit is ripe for repurposing, in this case, by making healthy, delicious juices.” Frey’s successful autobiography, The Growing Season: How I Built a New Life and Saved an American Farm (Ballantine Books, 2020), has been picked up by Disney-owned ABC for an adapted television series. Hollywood Producer Danny Strong, of the hit series Empire,

bought the rights to the story. Colette Burson, co-creator of Hung, is writing the scripts. Frey is an executive producer on the project. Even with all this hard work and success, Frey’s greatest joys in life are her two sons. The pandemic gave her a chance to be home more than usual, which she loved, and it also gave her an opportunity to work with them, just as her parents had worked alongside her. “Last winter, the boys overheard my calls about what to do with the unused produce,” she says. “They wanted to help. They set up a COVID-friendly fresh produce drive-through business at the farm in Illinois. They arranged for our trucks to bring up the unused Florida crop, selling it wholesale every Saturday right out of the truck, recruiting their cousins, friends, and the local high school girls’ volleyball team to help. With a social media campaign, they had cars lined up to the county line, teaching me about the power of direct-to-consumer marketing. Seeing their willingness to serve others made me an extraordinarily proud mom.” Frey, often referred to as the nation’s Pumpkin Queen, is excited about creating a small, heirloom varietal patch in Naples. “I’m planning a u-pick-it heirloom pumpkin patch on the property once the house and grounds are ready, giving me a chance to share my passion with the Naples community. It’s all part of looking ahead, which is very exciting.” Frey, in some ways, is a modern version of Martha Stewart. “All of my life and work is driven by my love of gardening and entertaining. I love hosting big parties. I love music. I love making cocktails, especially with my agua frescas.” She does everything either dressed in her blue jeans and work shirt or in full-on glam. “One minute I’m in a backhoe, the next minute I’m dressed up in designer outfits,” she quips, then moves on to her home decor. “My style at home is not super-fussy. It’s eclectic. I mix in pieces that are old, like my ginger-jar collection, with newer elements. I’m a country girl at heart.” «

ind in your hair, sand in your toes, fruity cocktail in your hands … sounds fabulous, and it is. But some lucky Naples residents enjoy the best of both worlds—both sea and sky—by splitting their time between the Gulf Coast and picturesque locales at higher altitudes. Some local couples we chatted with bought second homes to be closer to family and longtime friends, while others splurged on a custom-built residence in a dreamy location with cooler summers. Whatever the rationale, these home buyers are on trend. “What we’ve seen over the past 15 years is homeowners moving to Southwest Florida permanently, but now they are purchasing a second home or condo nearer to family and grandchildren,” says Michael Timmerman, chief market intelligence officer of Club Benchmarking, a Boston-based national private club consulting firm. Breathe in the fresh air and get inspired by these three spectacular second homes.

When a Naples gentleman and his wife want to return to where he grew up in West Virginia, surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains, the end result is a stunning summer retreat in White Sulphur Springs. This private couple moved into their 10,000-square-foot residence in 2020 and have since hosted numerous gatherings for friends and family. They quickly became members of The Greenbrier Golf & Country Club at the nearby iconic Greenbrier resort, and their daughter was married at The Greenbriar Chapel. Design principal and co-owner Troy Beasley, of Beasley & Henley Interior Design in Naples and Winter Park, had designed his clients’ primary Naples residence years earlier, so he knew their likes and dislikes. “He is semi-retired,” Beasley notes. “His goal was to have a very upscale, mountain-style home because he likes the rusticity and wanted something warm and inviting.” Taking more than two years from start to completion, the building process for the five-bedroom dwelling began when Beasley and the homeowners traveled to Montana to find stone, to Idaho for steel, and to Vermont for the slate roof. “We knew he wanted a lot of unique materials,” Beasley says. “The house is a perfect blend of quality materials and elements.”

Beasley’s trusted relationship with these clients allowed him to procure whimsical pieces, such as an eagle dressed in a tuxedo in the hall by the office, referencing his client’s interest in falconry. “I can surprise him with things and he loves it,” he adds. One of Beasley’s challenges was to prevent the strong architecture from being too harsh. “I like a masculine background and then I put softness in it. Soft area rugs, beautiful fabrics, skirted chairs. The skirted chair by the vanity in the master bath and curves in some of the chandeliers keep it from being too harsh.” Beasley says that his favorite area of the house is the great room and the bar. “But in the end, it’s the people who live in it who make the home so special because they are so warm and welcoming.”

This private Naples couple moved into their four-bedroom, 7,800-square-foot summer home in 2020, following 18 months of planning and construction. Bordered by Pisgah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway, this distinctly modern mountain retreat is sited in the private golfing community of The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. Perfectly in sync with its majestic surroundings, the dazzling residence is just minutes from Asheville, North Carolina. Positioned on the confluence of the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers, Asheville offers outdoor activities such as hiking, walking, and water sports. As home to the University of North Carolina, Asheville, the city also enjoys a lively art, craft beer, and culinary scene made better by its well-known mix of quirky residents, resulting in fascinating people-watching. The owners had several key architectural goals in mind when designing their home, which was built by Gabriel Home Builders of Travelers Rest, South Carolina. “It was a retreat from the hot summers

of Florida, but they did not want to give up many of the Florida features they had come to cherish,” says Richie Martin, vice-president of construction and design. Those features and characteristics included a modern, low-maintenance home that captures 270-degree views;

an open home that works for entertaining; an outdoor living area with a pool; and an outdoor kitchen and patio directly off the main living space. “Transplanting a patio-style home into the mountain topography required a uniquely creative design solution,” Martin explains. LH Design Studio, the design division of Gabriel Home Builders, selected the materials and fixtures, while the homeowners selected all of the furnishings and artwork. Martin’s favorite place in the home is the outdoor living area. “I love it because the view is so dramatic and the weather is ideal almost all of the year,” he says. “When this home was built, we pushed the boundaries. It was cutting edge for this style of architecture in our area. Today it sets a trend in the neighborhood with new homes bearing a lot of stylistic similarities.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2021

As much as Susan and Bill Luther embrace their carefree Southwest Florida lifestyle, every Memorial Day Weekend they close their Naples Moraya Bay condo and head to their summer place in Northern Michigan. The pair remain on beautiful Torch Lake—known for its crystal-clear water and Caribbean-like hues of blues and greens—until the area’s glorious fall colors are a faded memory. “Having a second home has been one of my dreams,” says Bill, a retired business owner, who grew up in a suburb outside of Detroit and fondly recalls visiting his family cottage in northern Michigan with his parents. “It’s a fun place for us to have people up, and this is the time of my life to have fun. We’ve even reconnected with distant friends from the past.” With four bedrooms (including a charming bedroom just for their grandkids), a guesthouse boasting a living space and two bedrooms, and an amazing wine room on the lower level, the property has ample room for their three grown daughters and two young grandchildren to enjoy lake life with them. Proximity to Traverse City and other towns are part of Torch Lake’s appeal. For Bill, so are the numerous near-

by golf courses. “Having access to those places and yet being remote enough on the lake makes it ideal for us,” he explains. “It’s a different relaxation than Naples, and I love Naples. Here it is quieter and more remote—no traffic lights. It’s not city life. It’s more reserved.” Built in 2016, the 7,000-square-foot home enjoys a lake view from every room. The Naples-based Renée Gaddis Interiors design team pulled hues from the lake for the home’s vibrant color scheme. For fun, each guest bedroom sports a unique palette all its own. Ceiling designs and custom woodwork and cabinetry accompanied by ultra-comfortable furnishings strengthen the dwelling’s relaxed yet sophisticated design. Door-to-door from their Torch Lake escape to the couple’s longtime family home in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills is only a three-hour-and-fifteen-minute drive. “That sealed the deal,” Bill says with a smile. «

GENERATION

NEXT

INSIDE THE FAMILY DYNAMICS OF THREE OF NAPLES’ MOST ICONIC HOME-RELATED BUSINESSES AND HOW THEY PASS THE TORCH THROUGH THE DECADES By Erika Klein Photography by Michael Caronchi

If your refrigerator broke during the pandemic, you could have been without one for months—unless you talked to Mullet’s Appliances. Scott Mullet, who took over the family business in 2012 as the third generation, says the home construction and remodeling industry experienced a huge jump after an initial pandemic slowdown, but manufacturing couldn’t keep up. During this “perfect storm,” the order time for refrigerators, dishwashers, and other appliances ballooned from under a week to over five months. The company responded by expanding its collection of loaner refrigerators from just a few to around 20. “It’s kind of an old-school thing, but how do you tell somebody you can’t have a refrigerator for five months?” Mullet says. The business has also continued doing 80 to 100 service calls per day despite them not being a huge moneymaker. “Again, it’s kind of a legacy item that came from my dad and my grandfather,” Mullet explains, adding that it saves customers from contacting the manufacturer to try to fix an issue. “It’s a good tool to keep those repeat customers coming back for future generations as well.” Family-run home remodeling businesses in Naples also thrived on the strength of their multigenerational values. Several decades ago, after getting a good deal on flooring for his Wisconsin jewelry store, Tom Hadinger’s father realized he’d found a better business and shifted entirely to flooring. In 1983, he brought Hadinger Flooring to Naples. The family’s enduring adaptability and entrepreneurship, as well as their strong focus on their customers, served them well through the pandemic. To help make customers comfortable, they increased in-home consultations and set up appointments outside of regular store hours. “These are things we’ve always kind of done, but we sort of highlighted it during this time,” notes Susan Hadinger, the company’s CEO and part of the third generation of the

business. “We always have been willing to bend over backwards for our customers.” Family wisdom helped local company Wilson Lighting, too. Despite 2020’s backorders and shipping delays, vice president Brian Wilson, the business’s second generation, says they were prepared. The company’s showrooms have always let customers not only see current trends and products in person, but immediately take items home with them from the company’s stock. “We have an enormous amount of inventory available to our clients, which has been a strength and advantage during this pandemic. It’s been really challenging to acquire a product in certain situations,” Wilson explains. He attributes this preparedness to his father’s founding vision. “I always say he’s either a little bit crazy or brilliant, or probably both.” Each family business says they can still rely on previous generations for help and advice and that older family members have been supportive as their companies have evolved. At Wilson Lighting, Brian Wilson’s father and company founder Robert Wilson III still plays a main role in decision-making. After working with the family business growing up, Brian joined the company as a recent college graduate when it expanded to Naples from Kansas City in 1996. Now, following decades of working with his father, Wilson says he values the relationship they’ve developed. “It’s been a real neat and cherished experience for me to not only grow up with someone that I admire and respect so much, but to be able to work with him on a daily basis,” he explains. The business also contributed to his family life when he met his wife at a trade show in North Carolina; they now work together, too. Besides family ties and being customer-centric, the secret to each of these companies’ success and longevity is the employees—many of whom are like family, too. Wilson thinks of one of his Florida comanagers as a brother. “We’ve worked with each other for so long; we’ve been around the world together,” he says. Hadinger has been working in her family’s business for about 11 years, but some employees have been there far longer—one salesperson for more than 30 years. “Our work family is really an extension of our family,” she notes. “I’ve only been in this industry for a nanosecond compared to some of these people.” Besides finding ways to improve the company, such as through increased automation and a stronger focus on digital advertising, she sees her role as supporting the staff to make their jobs easier, which in NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2021 107

turn improves things for customers. “What sets us apart is our people know the business inside and out,” Hadinger adds. “We’ll help you select it, we’ll install it, we’ll make sure it all works out for you, and take care of you.” The businesses expand on their close bonds with employees and customers by supporting the wider community. Mullet’s Appliances sponsors local baseball teams, while Hadinger Flooring hosts an annual golf tournament to benefit local charities, donating $8,000 this year to Golden Paws Assistance Dogs. The flooring company also runs a popular program giving area rugs to teachers. A former high school teacher herself, Hadinger continued the practice her mother started 11 years ago. She notes that teachers come earlier each year, with many lining up at midnight for a 6:30 a.m. start. “It’s been one of our best and favorite activities, because the teachers are all so grateful and it’s a very feel-good day,” she explains. They usually give out rugs to around 100 to 200 teachers and aim to have one for everyone who shows up. As the pandemic eases, Hadinger expects the cost of living and goods to rise, but she plans to continue working and improving the business. Wilson also worries about materials’ costs increasing, but notes that there are always cycles in Southwest Florida. In preparing for the future, he turns again to lessons from his father. “My dad races sailboats, and he taught me that the moment you see the change in the wind, you have to change the direction of the boat,” Wilson explains. “When there’s changes in the wind, you’ve got to respond to them, but I don’t think you can prepare for the unknown.” Mullet is less worried about the bubble bursting because they differentiate aspects of their business to serve both new construction and retail customers. He also expects many people to continue moving into the state. “COVID or not, you need a refrigerator,” he notes. Mullet plans to continue updating the company’s showrooms and making other improvements, such as when they upgraded the website to allow customers to browse items online and request quotes. All three agree that it can be difficult to separate work and family life. “My brother and sister both work here. So, it sometimes can take a conscious effort to separate it,” Mullet explains. “I think that’s pretty much any family business; you have to separate it. Otherwise, you go home talking about refrigerators—it’s never-ending.” Still, there’s something special about keeping the business in the family. Mullet says his 9-year-old son often hangs around at the business after school. For Hadinger, her 13-year-old son, Drew, started working at the store part-time this summer. “If he’s interested when he gets older, then I would love for him to be next generation,” she says. “That’s the hope.” «

WE HAVE AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF INVENTORY AVAILABLE TO OUR CLIENTS, WHICH HAS BEEN A STRENGTH AND ADVANTAGE DURING THIS PANDEMIC. IT’S BEEN REALLY CHALLENGING TO ACQUIRE A PRODUCT IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS.” —Brian Wilson

IN SEASON

Florida tomatoes burst on the scene in October, and the heirloom varieties tend to be the sweetest and most intensely flavored of all. This combination of house-made ricotta cheese and heirloom tomatoes was introduced as a starter three years ago at Ridgway Bar & Grill and has become one of the most popular menu items—as much for its shareability as its taste. “My ricotta recipe calls for milk, whole buttermilk, heavy cream, and salt,” says iconic Naples chef Tony Ridgway. “We source the tomatoes depending on seasonality. We add a healthy grind of salt before serving, because tomatoes want a lot of seasoning.” The dish is finished with grilled house-made ciabatta bread, baby romaine leaves, balsamic reduction, and basil oil. If you can’t fly to Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest, don’t fret: there are local opportunities to steep yourself in German culture, food, and (perhaps most importantly) beer. The German American Social Club of Cape Coral (gasc-capecoral.com) has been sponsoring Southwest Florida’s largest Oktoberfest celebration since 1964, with a pandemic break in 2020. This year’s festival will take place over the weekends of October 22-24 and 29-31 and is expected to attract more than 30,000 people. There will be three stages, two dance floors, and nonstop live bands playing German music. Hungry guests can indulge in specialties such as bratwurst, schnitzel, sauerbraten, and potato pancakes; Warsteiner, Radeberger, and Hofbrau will be available, along with a selection of domestic beers. There will also be a special carnival area for children. Admission is $8. From October 1-3, Millennial Brewing Co. (millennialbrewing. com/oktoberfest) in Fort Myers will host its fifth annual Oktoberfest, sponsored by the Sanibel-Captiva Community Bank. The event will feature eight German beers brewed in-house as well as Bavarian food trucks, continuous live music, and games such as the traditional stein hoisting competition. Admission and parking are free. The area’s German restaurants frequently run food and beer specials during the month of October. Most authentic are Old Europe Bistro (oldeuropebistro.com), Alpine Restaurant (alpineofnaples.com), and Black Forest (blackforestnaples.com). For the first time this year, St. Peter the Apostle Church (stpeter naples.org) in Naples is holding a festival on October 9 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bratwurst, German potato salad, and pastries will accompany the beer; activities will include music, dancing, a putt-putt course, and a white elephant table selling beer steins and Hummel figurines. “It’s been such a hard year,” says organizer Doriel Hess, “that we just want to bring everyone together for a bit of fun.” Amen to that.

MEETING PLACE

Keep it CASUAL

Peter and Larry Falisi opened The Hangout in December with the ambitious goal of “redefining the way Naples experiences fun.” The brothers have been working together since opening Two Guys Kitchen & Catering in 2015, and they have a clear view of their mission. “We wanted to create a place where locals and young professionals could come and relax,” explains Peter. “We felt that segment of the market was underserved. Our decor is casual, with bright, vibrant colors, and guests tell us we have more energy than the typical Naples restaurant.” Peter oversees sales and development, and Larry supervises the kitchen. The core of the menu consists of Italian dishes the family grew up cooking and eating—everything from their mother’s tomato sauce to their uncle’s pizza recipe. Larry has added embellishments such as tacos, quesadillas, and pulled pork sliders, as well as vegan options such as quinoa-stuffed bell peppers. It’s lovingly prepared comfort food, available in a fast-casual format at lunchtime and table service at night. While they have different professional backgrounds—Larry started cooking in college, while Peter formerly worked for Merrill Lynch—they share the same vision of hospitality. “Larry and I went to high school here, and we’re always available to help out in the community. We opened at a challenging time, but hopefully we can keep growing. I’m excited about the future.” (hangoutnaples.com)

STAR POWER constantly expanding whiskey list with dozens of small-batch selections is also on offer. One unique aspect of the restaurant is the backyard area, complete with a bar, pool tables, and a 10-by-6-foot TV screen for watching sporting events. There’s also a trailer-mounted stage that can be used for larger bands to create a concert-feel. Despite his success as a country artist and as a contestant on The Voice, Allen keeps a low profile at his Estero home and remains humble and unassuming. “My name may be on it, but it’s not a shrine to Ben Patrons of Ben Allen’s Backyard Grill & Pub Allen,” he says. “It’s not about self-promotion, but can relax on the patio, play some pool, or savor about promoting music.” (benallensbackyard.com) made-from-scratch classics like chicken pot pie. ISABELLA BAQUERIZO

When Ben Allen’s Backyard Grill & Pub opened in June, it brought a new dimension to East Naples. The restaurant, a partnership between the country singer and local restaurateur Todd Brooks, occupies the former Brooks Burgers location in Freedom Square and evolved from a relationship between the two men over the years. “We wanted a relaxed venue where people could hang out, enjoy some good food, and stay for the music,” explains Brooks. “We offer live music Wednesday through Sunday nights, and feature reggae, rock, blues, and soul in addition to open-mic nights and performances by the Ben Allen Band.” Brooks’ influence can be felt in the kitchen, which is under the supervision of chef Chris Butterfield. Everything is made from scratch, and the menu ranges from standards such as pizza and burgers to smoked brisket, St. Louis–style ribs, and chicken pot pie with homemade biscuits. There are 26 beers on tap, and a

For the moment, Hane and Eckl focus on pop-ups and post their weekly schedule on Facebook and Instagram, but they’re working toward a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the future. “Our goal is to give people an option to eat consciously,” says Eckl. “We dream about serving vegan brunches on a sunlit patio with jazz playing in the background. EAT + DRINK POUR

Secretive Sips

Many may imbibe but few can make these elusive LIQUEURS and bitters

By Mark Spivak It may be a precarious business model, but some of the world’s greatest spirits are made using formulas known only to a handful of people. While these four examples are common behind bars, their recipes remain closely guarded secrets. CHARTREUSE For the Carthusian monks isolated in the western French Alps, life hasn’t changed since the founding of the order in 1084. The monastery is bathed in silence, and the monks have meals delivered to their cells through a small cubbyhole. In 1605, the order received a recipe for a potion composed of 130 herbs and plants. It evolved into three distinct liqueurs: the original Elixir Végétal ($180), at a whopping 138 proof or 69 percent alcohol, as well as Green ($65, 110 proof) and Yellow ($65, 80 proof). The Green and Yellow versions have gained fame as an ingredient in craft cocktails, while the “Elixir of Long Life” is reputed to have healing properties. Chartreuse is also popular in liqueur-based desserts, and a dish of peaches in Chartreuse jelly was planned for the final night of the Titanic sailing—until the iceberg intervened. Although 1.5 million bottles of Chartreuse are reportedly sold each year and royalties revert to the order, only two monks are privy to the full formula. BÉNÉDICTINE On the surface, the story of this famous liqueur sounds similar to Chartreuse. A monk named Friar Bernardo Vincelli supposedly produced Bénédictine at the Abbey of Fécamp in Normandy for centuries prior to the French Revolution, when the building was destroyed. In 1863, the wine merchant Alexandre Le Grand discovered an ancient manuscript and successfully reconstructed the recipe. In reality, there’s no evidence that Friar Bernardo 126 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

126_POUR_1021.indd 126

9/8/21 3:01 PM

actually existed, much less that he concocted Bénédictine. It’s a good story, though, and Le Grand’s blend of 27 spices and herbs proved to have considerable commercial appeal. Today only three people know the formula for the liqueur at any given time. CAMPARI Turin, Italy, was ground zero in the cocktail culture of the mid-nineteenth century, and it is where Gaspare Campari began his apprenticeship to become a maître liquoriste—not just a bartender, but someone who was qualified to create new alcoholic beverages. In 1860 he moved to Milan and began selling his creation to customers. It was a bitter infusion of 60 herbs, barks, and fruit peels into a mixture of alcohol and distilled water, and it became a sensation. With yearly sales of more than 3 million cases, Campari is now one of the most popular aperitifs in the world; it has become an

essential ingredient in classic cocktails such as the Negroni, Americano, and Boulevardier. Gaspare’s secret formula has been carefully passed down through the generations, known only to a select few within the company. It has been reported that even the CEO is unaware of the exact proportions. ANGOSTURA BITTERS It’s hard to find a bar without a bottle of Angostura, and many classic cocktails wouldn’t exist without it. A German doctor developed the formula in 1824, and it immediately became a cure-all for common ailments such as seasickness and gastric distress. The bitters have been manufactured in Trinidad since 1875, and only five people in the world are familiar with the details. They never travel together, and one of them has to be present whenever a new batch is manufactured— although the recipe is supposedly locked away in a U.S. bank in case of catastrophe. «

NATURAL HEALING

HONEY’S Superpower You may be familiar with honey as a cough remedy—but this liquid gold has other healing qualities, too. Manuka honey, which comes from a tree in New Zealand and Australia, has been used for its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties to help heal wounds for more than 2,000 years. Dr. Joel Ying, a holistic doctor who owns Joy Health & Wellness in Naples, recommends that his patients use Manuka honey for hard-to-heal wounds and to prevent infection. “It’s not something that everyone thinks to use first,” he notes, but says it’s a good addition to your medicine cabinet that works similarly to over-the-counter antibiotic ointments. If the wound still doesn’t get better, or looks worse, of course, seek medical attention. You can find Manuka honey locally at Food & Thought, Nature’s Garden of Naples, or Whole Foods, though Ying points out that it should be honey marked for medical use. Apply this special honey to the affected area or try ointment or Manuka honey–infused bandages from First Honey for a convenient alternative. (joyhealthwellness.com)

DENTAL HEALTH

Sweet SMILES Halloween is meant for scares—but you don’t want all the sugar to give your teeth a fright. Dr. Randold Binns, owner of Advanced Prosthodontics & Implant Esthetics in Naples, says it’s okay to enjoy occasional sweets, if you know what to do after eating them. For starters, brush your teeth two to three times per day, floss, and visit your dentist every six months. Here are a few more tips to help you enjoy Halloween with a healthy smile. (naplesdentist.com)

1

Eat chocolate Binns recommends passing on hard candy, sour candy, and sticky candy. “Hard candies are really, really bad,” he says. He explains that it’s the sugar and the consistency, with a risk of breaking your teeth or crowns. And while kids often love sour candy, it’s very acidic, which causes demineralization of the enamel, he says, leading to cavities and white stains on your teeth. Sticky candy is difficult to remove from your teeth and can pop out a filling or crown while chewing. Turn to dark chocolate with almonds, which has less sugar and offers beneficial nutrients, he explains. Plus, the rough texture of the almonds can help clean your teeth.

2

Delay brushing After you eat, Binns says, bacteria produce acid that softens your enamel and can result in cavities. “If you start brushing your teeth right away, your toothpaste and toothbrush rub against that soft enamel, producing more erosion,” he notes. He suggests waiting 30 minutes after eating to brush teeth.

3

Implement fiber Don’t have a toothbrush on hand during the day? Try eating some fiber. Binns recommends eating raw fruits, like apples, which can help clean your teeth by creating friction that removes some of the sugar from your enamel. Rinsing with water is also smart.

RELAXATION

STRESS LESS Reiki is a Japanese complementary therapy focused on using energy to promote healing. Recent research in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine indicates that reiki is more effective than a placebo and may improve symptoms of pain, anxiety, and overall well-being. Lyn Williams, reiki master and owner of A Center for Reiki in Naples, has been practicing for 25 years. She has worked on people with conditions from knee pain to cancer and says reiki can benefit everyone. “Healing occurs with the receptivity of the person who wants to be healed,” she explains. “The body just needs to have the right food, the right environment, rest, and a positive mindset.” It’s up to you whether you do hands-on reiki or if the practitioner hovers their hands above your body; either way, Williams says, the energy flows through. While she can make no guarantees about the healing outcomes of a session, she says reiki is always good for stress relief. “I’ve never had someone leave my center who wasn’t more relaxed and didn’t feel that their stress level had been substantially reduced, if not eliminated, by the time our session was over.” (acenterforreiki.com) 130 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

HELP WITH

HOUSING Finding affordable housing is difficult in Southwest Florida, especially for people with disabilities. Those on a fixed monthly income of $794 can’t afford rent for an apartment in Naples, notes Berneitha McNair, executive director of Residential Options of Florida (ROOF). The nonprofit organization helps to address this problem by leasing housing to disabled individuals for 30 percent of their income each month. “They can live, work, and play in their communities, and they’re not paying a large amount of their monthly income for rent,” says McNair. One man who previously moved from home to home was able to move into ROOF housing in 2019 and gain access to a caretaker for daily support. He now volunteers in the community and runs his own small business selling produce at farmers markets. To expand support for others like him, ROOF is developing three more homes in Naples and Cape Coral to add to the six it already owns in the area. Its current 19 slots are mostly full, and McNair says residents can stay indefinitely. McNair adds that she’s dedicated to helping people with disabilities thrive in their communities, explaining, “It makes my heart smile.” (flroof.org)

FITNESS

Battle of the BANDS You can work out with bulky weights and large machines, or you can get the benefits of strength training from stretchy, colorful bands that fit in your pocket. Resistance bands can assist with recovering from a sports injury, and studies suggest that they may improve cognitive performance and decrease depression in older adults. Compared to dumbbells and other weights, “the band is just kinder, on the movement and on the joint,” says Carlene Murray, owner of Board30 Naples. The studio offers a unique take on fitness bands with bands that are attached to a board, allowing for different exercises that use all parts of your body and incorporate strength training and cardio. “People think bands are easy,” Murray notes, “but they come in and they’re surprised at how challenged they are.” Another advantage of the board is preventing accidents from bands rigged to an object, like a door, to provide resistance. Whether you use traditional resistance bands or Board30’s approach, there are nearly unlimited exercises to try. Here is a bent-over latissimus dorsi muscles (or lat) pull that you can do at home using a resistance band. (board30naples.com) Directions: STEP ON THE RESISTANCE BAND WITH YOUR RIGHT FOOT AND LUNGE FORWARD. LEAN FORWARD. WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND, GRASP THE BAND AND PULL UPWARD, KEEPING THE ELBOW CLOSE TO THE BODY AND SQUEEZING THE RIGHT SHOULDER BLADE TOWARD THE SPINE. CONTINUE FOR DESIRED REPS AND CHANGE SIDES.

Since age 14, Organically Twisted owner John Hart has been growing his own food. “Nothing is more satisfying than walking outside and picking a piece of fresh fruit,” he explains. Inspired to start a food truck offering healthy dining options, he initially grew much of the food for the menu items himself. Now, five years after opening a brick-and-mortar location in Naples, he sources food locally to meet the higher demand but still grows the flowers and garnishes used in the restaurant. He enjoys changing the way people think about vegetables, which is evident in his popular dishes, including the artichoke burger, walnut tacos, and mung bean taco salad. “I’ve never written down a recipe, so I just create every day,” he says, adding that he focuses on combinations of simple ingredients with everything made from scratch. “I think between good ingredients and passion, when you put those two things together, anything’s possible.” (organicallytwisted.com)

Film fans experience the Naples International Film Festival at Artis—Naples.

TOP BILLING

Cinematic Scene Dim the lights and roll the film for the 2021 Naples International Film Festival (NIFF) October 21-24. Currently in its thirteenth year and now a part of Artis—Naples, this regional film festival was named among the “Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” by MovieMaker Magazine in 2019. Last year, NIFF kept the creativity and cinematic inspiration flowing with a hybrid in-person and virtual presentation format and plans to do the same again this year. Audiences, of course, can count on a diverse lineup of independent and international films, as well as opportunities to learn more about the filmmakers, industry vets, influencers, and fans who enjoy NIFF’s “fun-under-the-sun” style. PETFEST | WINNER

Hook, Line, and Sinker TOBY, A 10-YEAR-OLD LHASA APSO/TERRIER MIX FROM BONITA SPRINGS WINS THE COVETED “CUTEST PET” CROWN IN NAPLES ILLUSTRATED’S FIRST-EVER PETFEST COMPETITION PRESENTED BY NUTRISOURCE By Kerry Shorr

WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT TOBY? HERE HE IS, IN HIS OWN WORDS. FAVORITE TREAT Ice cream, ice cubes, and whatever my parents are cooking, although I usually don’t get a bite.

SOMETHING SECRET I have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), so when my parents go somewhere, I’ll nibble the end of the toilet paper in their bathroom. If I’m really annoyed, I’ll scatter some pieces on the floor.

TYPICAL ITINERARY I rotate lounging around on the couch or my daytime bed, barking at anyone who comes too close to my house (yes, it’s mine), and more lounging.

TRICK OR TREAT Tricks aren’t really my strong point. I play fetch with tennis balls until I’m bored and won’t bring them back. That doesn’t mean you should stop throwing them, though.

MICHAEL CARONCHI

I

f Toby, a darling Lhasa Apso/terrier mix whose side hustle is stealing hearts, could describe himself, he’d say: “I’m a laid-back guy who likes short walks, long naps, and human-watching at the park.” This summer, he snagged first place in the first-annual PetFest presented by NutriSource—a photographic competition Naples Illustrated launched this year to uncover the most camera-friendly pet in the county, with contest proceeds benefiting Golden Paws Assistance Dogs. Toby’s mom, Marylee Tirrell, describes the pint-sized pup she first met in 2012 as “a little human in a dog suit, with sonic hearing.” She says, “If you’re trying to open a package very quietly in the kitchen, he comes flying around the corner, hoping there’s something in it for him.” Marylee and her husband, Doug, went shopping for a new pet a year after losing their 4-year-old rescue cat, Sophie. In 2011, they drove to the Humane Society Naples. Doug beelined over to the dogs while Marylee went to look at cats. “Not even five minutes later, he came to find me to show me who he found,” she says. It was a 23-pound dog named Toby that Domestic Animal Services had found wandering the streets. Unfortunately, he was already on a temporary hold for someone else, so their only option was to get on a waiting list and hope for the best. The next day, they learned Toby was theirs because the other prospective adopter had cancelled. Like expectant parents with a new baby, the Tirrells were ecstatic. Two weeks after bringing him home, the couple made an astonishing discovery—Toby was a trash bandit. “I found something odd in his dog bed that turned out to be a half-eaten bagel and a chicken wing he found in the kitchen garbage,” Marylee says with a laugh. “We figured that, after living on the streets, he wanted to be guaranteed he was getting fed!” They realized Toby wasn’t a morning person, either. For weeks, Doug would walk him at 5:30 a.m. before

leaving for work, but Toby quickly tired of the early morning ritual and would hop around the bed so his daddy couldn’t catch him. “He exerted more energy jumping to avoid Doug than if he just went on the walk,” Marylee says. Nearly 10 years have passed since Toby’s freedom walk, and Marylee and Doug are still grateful for the joy and delight he inspires every day. “I didn’t know I could love a dog as much as I love Toby,” she says. “I told Doug he would be doing the lion’s share of the walking and feeding, since he was the one who really wanted a dog, but Toby’s got me hook, line, and sinker!”

FAVORITE THINGS

Minka McDonald,

CHRISTINA SEIFERT PHOTOGRAPHY

the president of Jinx McDonald Interior Designs Inc., moved to Naples with her family from Atlanta, Georgia, in 1991. After attending Barron Collier High School, she studied communications at Florida International University and interior design at Florida State University. She most enjoys “working with beautiful, luxurious materials,” and has put that affinity to good use with her expertise in the interior design field for the last 15 years. McDonald and her 11-year-old son, Brooks, have a tight-knit family that lives throughout Southwest Florida. Furthering her deep roots in the community, McDonald’s nonprofit passions include the Naples Botanical Garden and Habitat for Humanity. When asked what she loves most about Naples, she says, “I cherish my friends here and the easy lifestyle we have. We get together at the beach to watch sunsets or enjoy drinks in each other’s backyards.” Below, McDonald’s top spots in town to …
