FROM THE PUBLISHER

Wish List eople often ask me what I like most about living in Naples, and the response I believe they are expecting to hear is, “the beautiful beach and the weather.” While those are certainly fabulous perks that I frequently enjoy, what really lifts my spirits are the philanthropic people whom I have had the pleasure to work with over the last 29 years. Not a day goes by when I am not pleasantly surprised by a heartwarming story of yet another altruistic Neapolitan. A girlfriend was telling me the other day that her 10-year-old son and his friend had a joint birthday party, and the boys decided that in lieu of gifts (I am sure that is not exactly how they worded it), they wanted to donate money to the Humane Society Naples. The boys then lovingly turned over $1,500 in birthday donations to the nonprofit. Another friend gives up her lunch hour to offer an exercise class to a group of individuals with multiple sclerosis. And I have been moved to tears many times by the speeches of college graduates who became the first child in their family to attend college, thanks to Take Stock scholarships from Collier County’s Champions for Learning. I think one of the most heartfelt moments I experienced was during the annual holiday toy drive sponsored by the Collier Building Industry Association. One year, I was given the name of a child who listed a pair of cowboy boots on his wish list for Santa. As one of Santa’s helpers, I excitedly presented him with the red cowboy boots along with some toiletries. He quickly pushed aside the boots, grabbed the new toothbrush and proceeded to run around the room, declaring with glee, “I got my own toothbrush!” I was toast for the rest of the day and, apparently, still am many years later. As you will see in this issue, there are many, many ways to be charitable. The donations of money and time that pour in every year from the residents of Naples and surrounding communities are immeasurable and help sustain the 100-plus charities we have listed in this issue. These efforts make a real difference in the lives of the less fortunate, providing them with experiences, food, education and health care (to list just a few) that otherwise would be out of reach. Take a moment to extend a helping hand to some of the organizations we have listed in these pages and see what you can do to help. Or just visit an elderly neighbor and listen to his or her stories for a while. You will both sleep better, I promise.

nty of Last season offered ple photo ops!

Events last season included noteworthy debuts and a growing number of Gen-Xers on the social circuit. The combination of gorgeous homes, gourmet food and shopping made the Naples Woman’s Club Kitchen Tour a sold-out hit. The inaugural excursion brought ladies to four lovely homes to nibble culinary treats by local chefs, ogle some exquisite decor and engage in some boutique retail therapy. The second tour promises to deliver the same while raising funds to support David Lawrence Center, Youth Haven, Friends of Foster Children and student scholarships. The Everglades Foundation brought ForEverglades, a yearly star-studded staple in Palm Beach, to Naples for the first time. Guests at the west coast party oohed and ahhed over the Collier Collection of extraordinary cars at the Revs Institute for Automotive Research. ForEverglades Naples, which contributes to the mission of restoring the Everglades ecosystem, returns to the Naples-based institute in April. (Read more about the foundation on page 34.) The Friends of Marnie Codrey, Matt Sutton and Ellison the Foundation held its first event, Warner on the David Lawrence Center Young Executives sunset Cruise. a “Chef Cook-Off” at Florida Builder Appliances in Bonita Springs. The new group, composed of next-generation philanthropists, has a goal of raising $100,000 to support the Naples Children & Education Foundation, the founding organization of the Naples Winter Wine Festival. The David Lawrence Center Young Executives held various events to aid the center, including its signature Gulf Ball, and an annual Sunset Cruise. And even Naples Millennials contributed. Community School of Naples students staged the third annual Model Students at Waterside Fashion Show to benefit the CSN Financial Aid Program.

Antwone Fisher, an award-winning film and literary writer who was the subject of the eponymous movie costarring and directed by Denzel Washington, will deliver his uplifting message at Youth Haven’s January luncheon. And The Shelter For Abused Women & Children’s annual February luncheon keynoter is author Leslie Morgan Steiner, whose 2009 memoir about surviving domestic violence, Crazy Love, was a New York Times best-seller. Great art is on tap also. To help raise money for the Latchkey League, Trudy Labell Fine Art, Naples, will host “Night Music,” an evening of art and song February 12. Founded by Naples arts icon Myra Daniels, the Latchkey League is working to support the building of the Salvation Army’s 21,000-square-foot Janet Cohen Youth Center in East Naples, with rooms for music, dance, a gym and more to enrich the lives of area kids who need a place to go after school. u

Below: Students from Mike Davis Elementary, Angels Board members and Santa celebrated at a Christmas event at Clive Daniel Home.

Angels Undercover Kids succeed best when they put their full attention on learning, yet many are distracted because they don’t have the appropriate clothes to wear to class. As Naples resident Jackie Bennett discovered in 2010, 64 percent of county elementary students are deemed economically needy by the Collier County Public Schools board. “I was appalled to learn that in many cases the need is so great that children arrive at school without socks or undergarments,” says Bennett. “Even worse, some are kept home while their parents save to buy the required polo shirts and shorts.” Bennett’s findings spurred her to found Angels Undercover (AUC), an organization that provides school uniforms, socks and underwear for elementary pupils. It distributes the basic necessities that allow students to arrive at school ready to learn, now delivering cloth

018_Cause & Effect_2014.indd 19

ing to 10 Collier County elementary schools. Because the nonprofit’s 11 board members cover all administrative costs, one hundred percent of outside donations goes towards buying clothing for the children. For the 20132014 school year, in a smart move to stretch dollars raised to the maximum possible, AUC partnered with clothing maker Chico’s FAS Inc. to manufacture school clothes. “We have been able to go from donating several hundred pieces in 2011 to more than 10,000 uniforms provided to 3,600 students for the current school year,” Bennett says. “This represents approximately 17 percent of all elementary schoolchildren in Collier County, or 25 percent of economically needy students.” There is still much work to be done, considering that at 20 of 30 elementary schools in the county, more than half the students qualify for free and reduced-cost lunches. To help these underprivileged kids most effectively, a new

CAN’s annual event always includes fine wines to sip, great auction items and, of course, fabulous shoes.

AUC initiative, the Clothe a School Program, has been launched to identify sponsors for specific schools. The group will extend its fundraising efforts with the inaugural Sip & Putt for the Angels April 2, 2014. The outing will be a casual, fun, putting tournament and wine tasting with hors d’oeuvres served on the greens of Grey Oaks Country Club. The event is the next step in AUC’s mission to help all children succeed in school. Cancer Alliance of Naples “Imagine returning home from surgery, chemotherapy or radiation to find an eviction notice or final warning from a utility company on your door,” says Marianne St. Johns, executive director, Cancer Alliance of Naples (CAN). “Then visualize reaching out for help and being told no funds are available. CAN’s mission is to negate both of these scenarios.” NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

Special Olympics Florida stand up paddleboard training took place in Naples, attended by the organization Expedition Florida 500. Sweetwater Paddle Sports of Bonita Springs brought equipment. Special Olympics athletes competed in the Fourth Annual Noodles Luau Race held in May 2013 at Bayfront in Naples. Matt Berman (in white shirt) founded the Stand Up Paddle Board Luau Race.

The organization provides financial aid, support and education and information resources for low-income families touched by cancer. CAN currently faces a troubling reality in the form of a waiting list comprised of Collier and Southern Lee County patients needing help for rent, utilities and other basic necessities while they are in cancer treatment. To fill its coffers, CAN has been putting on a fab girls’ night out for the past three years—Wine, Women & Shoes—with cocktails, wine, fashion, shopping and dapper men as servers. In 2014, though, the nonprofit ups the ante with a two-pronged fundraiser—the Wine, Women & Shoes luncheon January 31 and the Wine, Women & Shoes Sole Mate gala February 1. The new Sole Mate Gala offers guys a chance to enjoy an evening with their wives or dates. Both take place at the Club at Mediterra. During the two parties, guests will enjoy silent and live auctions, wine tastings, a fashion show, a Keys to the Closet raffle worth 20

$15,000, dancing to the music of the band High Voltage and a shoe contest. CAN’s goal for the two-day event is to raise $200,000. Since its inauguration, Wine, Women & Shoes has generated more than $175,000 for the charity. All proceeds will benefit CAN outreach programs as well as its KidsCAN program, which provides scholarships for graduating Collier County high school seniors who are cancer survivors or have a parent or sibling with cancer. “Goals for 2014 fundraising include raising awareness of CAN’s mission, ending our waiting lists and expanding our programs to include more recovering patients in need,” says St. Johns. Special Olympics Florida— Collier County Since its inception in 1972, the mission of Special Olympics Florida (SOFL)—Collier County has been to provide year-round train-

ing and competition in a variety of Olympictype sports for people with intellectual disabilities. “The ultimate objective of Special Olympics is to help people with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large,” says Sue Palmer, fundraising director, SOFL. Collier County’s program currently includes 300 participating athletes. In 2010, Noodles Italian Café & Sushi Bar owner Matt Berman, father of a Special Olympics athlete and paddleboard enthusiast, came up with an idea to raise money for the nonprofit—the Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Luau Race. It began with six participants and raised $1,400 for equipment, uniforms, training, transportation and competition for SO athletes. When the Second Annual Luau Race was held in 2011, the competition had more than doubled in size; an additional race category was added for special-needs individuals, and more than $8,400 was raised.

“The state-level administrators were so impressed with the progress and accomplishments of our athletes that they agreed to open SUP as a new SOFL sport,” says Palmer. And the event just gets better: the 2012 SUP Luau Race attracted 100 entrants in four categories—men’s, women’s, kids and Special Olympics—and raised $9,000. The 2013 event drew 115 entrants and raised $10,000. “We started four years ago with six participants, and now SUP is a state-recognized sport,” says Berman. “Twelve Florida counties do exactly what we do here in Naples. Next May, all proceeds from the Fourth Annual SUP Luau Race go toward buying a traveling trailer and paddleboards. Our goal is to go national.” Hope For Haiti Two Hope for Haiti initiatives are adding an element of good taste to its efforts, which aim to improve the quality of life for the island’s people, particularly children, through education, nutrition and health care. The Naples22

based organization touches 500,000 Haitians yearly through its outreach and disaster-relief programs. The organization established the Cooking School in an effort to support Haitian men and women by teaching them marketable skills. School Director Carmene Alverbe teaches recipe development, proper food preparation, sanitation, creating balanced meal plans, planning and budgeting, and presentation techniques. Classes are held Saturday afternoons in Les Cayes, Haiti, and culminate in a final test in which students present dishes to a panel of judges. Upon passing, they receive a certificate of completion that helps them find jobs in their home community. So far, 26 students have graduated who otherwise would not have skills that would lead to jobs. “There are Haitians in Collier County who have family in or around Les Cayes, and who are very supportive of this school and its goal of preparing students for employment within the hospitality industry in their home coun-

try,” says Stephanie Jepsen, director of development, Hope for Haiti. Alverbe recently published Cooking With Carmene, which features the chef’s favorite recipes. The U.S. Embassy in Haiti has made the cookbook available on consignment to employees. In Naples, the cookbook can be purchased at Clive Daniel Home and through Hope for Haiti. Proceeds help fund program development. In Southwest Florida, the nonprofit holds annual events to help with its initiatives to help Haitians build sustainable, healthy communities. Neapolitans can boost these efforts by checking out Hope for Haiti’s annual soiree March 8, 2014, which carries the theme “Passport to the Stars.” u

Giving Back Throughout the year,

Naples Illustrated shines a spotlight on some of the community’s super philanthropists and the deserving causes that ignite their passion. We revisit the outstanding individuals profiled in NI’s pages during the past year. By Christina Wells compiled by Olivia LeClair Photography by Roland Scarpa

Kathy and Tighe King The Kings don’t let their part-time resident status slow them down while in Naples. Generous philanthropists in their hometown of York, Pennsylvania, the Kings aim to make just as large an impact during their time in Florida. As avid supporters of the Humane Society Naples and other local groups, the Kings use their time in paradise constructively and generously. Local Charitable Support: Humane Society Naples, Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, The Conservancy of Southwest Florida Insight: Says Kathy, “While we’re only here part-time, we still want to contribute to this community. Everyone has something they can give that will make things better in some way.”

WALTER AND ROSEMARY BLANKLEY

Walter and Rosemary Blankley Longtime supporters of education, the Blankleys are major donors to both their alma maters—Princeton and Arcadia universities. Determined to bring that bond to Naples, they created the Walter E. Blankley Scholar program in partnership with Immokalee’s Guadalupe Center. Three worthy graduates who served as part of the center’s Tutor Corps were awarded $500,000 each for college expenses. Named 2012 Philanthropists of the Year by the Everglades Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Blankleys’ commitment to education will have a lasting effect on local youth for years to come. Local Charitable Support: Guadalupe Center of Immokalee Insight: “I remember the people who helped make my education possible,” says Rosemary. “Perhaps that is why giving back is so important now.”

Yale Freeman A lawyer by profession but self-described food banker at heart, Yale Freeman is known in Southwest Florida for both his legal know-how and his big heart. Freeman formerly served on the board of the Harry Chapin Food Bank, a stint that lasted 10 years. He also devotes his time to breast cancer awareness and activism following his wife, Susan’s, diagnosis in 2010. His devotion has had a real impact—his children Andrew and Allison both work for nonprofit organizations. Local Charitable Support: Harry Chapin Food Bank, Temple Shalom, Legal Aid Service of Collier County, Collier County Women’s Bar Association, American Cancer Society Insight: “My M.O. is to focus on a specific cause I believe in and make a long-term commitment of time,” says Freeman.

Ron McGinty Fueled by personal experience and drive, McGinty is a real-life guardian angel to area homeless and mistreated kids. As the director of development for Youth Haven, an emergency shelter for abandoned, neglected or abused children, he helps provide temporary homes for kids separated from their parents. His present goal is raising the funds for Haven House, which would serve as a home for hundreds of children in desperate need. Local Charitable Support: Youth Haven, Guardian ad Litem program Insight: “If just one child ends up becoming successful and builds a loving family, then we have done our job,” McGinty says. “My dream is to touch that one person.”

Alan Korest Despite having no musical background, Alan Korest, along with his late wife, Marilyn, granted countless opportunities for young musicians (and those young at heart) in Southwest Florida. In 2006, the couple founded the Florida Gulf Coast University Bower School of Music, named after Korest’s father-in-law, Edwin H. Bower. Korest has served on the FGCU Foundation’s Board of Directors and helped found the Moorings Park Bower Chapel, complete with a handcrafted organ. Local Charitable Support: FGCU Bower School of Music, Moorings Park Bower Chapel Insight: Says Korest, “My basic core belief is that music provides unusual opportunities that nothing else offers in the same way to improve academic outcomes at all levels, from pre-K on.”

founding Baby Basics of Collier County nearly 10 years ago, the local program has grown from 10 to 315 families and has distributed 2.5 million diapers since 1994. Lynch keeps her eye constantly on the future, and hopes to spread Baby Basics from 12 states to all 50. Local Charitable Support: Baby Basics of Collier County Insight: “The best gift you can give to your community is the gift of yourself coupled with a vision and desire to make changes in the lives of those around you,” Lynch says.

Nicholas and Eleanor Chabraja As the Naples Botanical Garden continues to flourish, the Chabrajas lead the way in paving its future. The next phase of the garden’s expansion, including the construction of The Eleanor and Nicholas Chabraja Visitor Center, got under way in 2013, thanks to the Chabrajas’ continued support. Also passionate for giving back to education, the Chabrajas are supporters of Northwestern University and DePauw University. Local Charitable Support: Naples Botanical Garden Insight: “We look to meet the needs of the communities in which we live. There is always an opportunity to fill the bucket,” says Nick.

Lu Drackett

Rey Pezeshkan is living proof that one speaker can change a life forever. After attending a workplace seminar that discussed escalating drug and alcohol use among children, he felt compelled to act. He contributed to the founding of Drug Free Collier in 2006 and continues to work with local substance-abuse centers. Local Charitable Support: Drug Free Collier, David Lawrence Center, Hazelden Insight: “There is no greater reward than to change a life and make it better,” Pezeshkan says. “The best gift you can give to a community is the safety and well-being of children.”

With three decades of local experience, it’s no wonder Lu Drackett is an anchor of many Naples organizations. Her passion for the advancement of underprivileged women has led her to serve multiple groups devoted to the cause. Local Charitable Support: Artis—Naples, St. Matthew’s House, The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, Naples Botanical Garden, Community Foundation of Collier County Insight: “The best gifts you can give to a community are to have compassion, love and be involved,” says Drackett.

THE EVERGLADES FOUNDATION In 1993, Paul Tudor Jones, George Barley and his wife, Mary, became concerned about the condition of the water in Florida Bay, where pollution was adversely affecting fishing in the area. They sprang into action and formed The Everglades Foundation to advocate for clean water and the preservation of the Everglades. Currently, the organization has a board of 22 individuals from around the country, three of whom live in the Naples area: Dolph Von Arx, Nicholas G. Penniman IV and Ellin Goetz. The goal of the nonprofit is to protect and restore the Everglades through environmental leadership, scientific research and legal action. To support these initiatives, the organization holds annual fundraising events in Palm Beach and Naples called ForEverglades. The Naples version, soon to enter its second year, will include a lavish dinner and a live auction at Revs Institute’s Collier Collection, where attendees can view a superb array of private automobiles. To help preserve the unique River of Grass, one of America’s irreplaceable treasures, the foundation aims to top the $350,000 raised at ForEverglades Naples in 2013 at the upcoming event April 11, 2014.

Once spread over eight million acres, the Everglades ecosystem reaches from the Kissimmee River to Lake Okeechobee. Water from the lake slowly moves towards the Florida Bay.

The 21-acre nature experience at the Conservancy celebrates all of the natural treasures within the region— water, land and wildlife.

THE CONSERVANCY OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA In 1964, a small group of Naples residents joined in an effort to halt the construction of a road that was proposed to run from Naples to Marco Island. It would have traveled directly through Rookery Bay, essentially destroying the estuary. The group created a petition and presented it to a commission that effectively ended the plan. This classic example of a successful grassroots initiative was the seed out of which the Conservancy of Southwest Florida grew. Currently the Conservancy works to protect our region’s water, land and wildlife through environmental policy, science and education. In the Conservancy’s nature center, visitors can take self-guided tours through the Dalton Discovery Center, which features interactive exhibits and face-to-face encounters with live animals and marine life. It’s also possible to visit the 5,000-square-foot Von Arx Wildlife hospital to see animals in recovery and learn more about rescue, rehabilitation and release through the program, “A Wild Life.” At its annual fundraiser Magic Under the Mangroves last March, sponsors and attendees celebrated raising a record-breaking $950,000 to support Conservancy programs. On March 6, 2014, Magic Under the Mangroves will celebrate the Conservancy’s 50-year anniversary and look forward to its future. 36

AUDUBON CORKSCREW SWAMP SANCTUARY

Volunteer Dick Brewer leads a group on a boardwalk tour.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a must-see trove of nature’s gems for all local residents and visitors. It is home to the largest nesting colony of federally endangered wood storks in the nation, the Florida panther, American alligator, gopher tortoise, Florida sandhill crane, limpkin, roseate spoonbill, snowy egret, tricolored heron, white ibis, Big Cypress fox squirrel and the Florida black bear, as well as rare plants including the Ghost Orchid. And to think, it was nearly destroyed but for the efforts of some citizen crusaders. Around 1944, systematic logging of cypress forests began in the Fakahatchee Strand south of Corkscrew, and started moving north as the 500-year-old trees were logged out. Some local people became alarmed at the prospect of losing the forests, and launched a campaign to save the swamp. The National Audubon Society, along with other organizations, worked together to raise awareness and funds needed to buy the swamp and save the endangered trees and the surrounding fauna. By 1954, they had secured 5,680 acres of land, calling it Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Today, the sanctuary accounts for 13,000 acres in the Corkscrew Watershed, supporting 700 acres of bald cypress.

A walk on the 2.25mile boardwalk offers a perfect way for visitors to explore pristine habitats and observe the beauty of nature.

The 13,000-acre Sanctuary, located in the heart of the Corkscrew Watershed, provides a natural habitat for numerous wildlife species.

Friends of Rookery Bay Board President Bruce Robertson, left, thanked Guy Harvey for attending as the honorary chair for the Batfish Bash for the Bay fundraiser. Throughout the evening, Guy Harvey posed for photos with guests and signed autographs.

Among the more than $60,000 worth of items donated to the Friends of Rookery Bay for last February’s live and silent auctions was a framed Guy Harvey work, Sledgehammer.

FRIENDS OF ROOKERY BAY Several years ago, Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve’s staff of four was charged with managing 9,000 acres of one of the few remaining undisturbed mangrove estuaries in North America under the Florida Department of Natural Resources’ Bureau of Land and Aquatic Resource Management. In 1987, Gary Lytton, then the reserve’s education coordinator, realized that funds and volunteers were critical to meeting the goals of the reserve’s mission “to provide a basis for informed coastal decisions through research, land management and education,” and to work with the community to promote conservation of the area. “As education coordinator I was doing a lot of community outreach, and more and more people started asking me how they could help,” Lytton says. “They wanted to donate to our programs but the State of Florida was unable to accept donations. I realized that if parks could have a friends’ group, then we should, too.” So Lytton, who now serves as reserve director, joined forces with other concerned citizens Linda Weinland, Georgia Stamp, Bob Gore and Courtenay Vass. Each kicked in $10 to pay a $50 incorporation fee to be 38

able to raise funds, and Friends of Rookery Bay (FORB) was born. The organization assists the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in the management of what is now the 110,000-acre Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. And in September, the research reserve was designated as the nation’s third Florida Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center by the federal program Coastal America. A long way from that original $50 contribution to start up FORB, the nonprofit raised $64,000 at its most recent annual fundraising event, the Batfish Bash for the Bay, which highlighted an appearance by renowned marine wildlife artist Guy Harvey. Dollars raised at this fun outdoor party benefit the research reserve’s youth and adult education programs. Within the 16,500-square-foot environmental learning center are four research laboratories, classrooms, an auditorium, a nature store and a two-story visitor center. The public can partake in an array of activities, including interactive exhibits, nature tours, kayaking, films and lectures. The fourth annual Batfish Bash for the Bay will be March 15, 2014. Attendees can expect another evening of dancing to live music under the stars, dinner and auctions.

The Naples Zoo’s roots date to the early twentieth century. Dr. Henry Nehrling, a botanist and ornithologist, moved to Naples in 1919 to establish a botanical garden, and after he died in 1929, his unmaintained garden grew wild. It was restored in the late ’40s by Dr. Julius Fleischmann, who bought huge plots of land in the area, including Nehrling’s garden. Fleischmann added walking paths and lakes, built the first entry building and opened it to the public in 1954 as Caribbean Gardens. In 1968, Larry and Nancy Jane Tetzlaff took over, bringing their collection of animals from Ohio to Naples, and renamed the site Jungle Larry and Safari Jane’s African Safari at Caribbean Gardens. Fast-forward to the twenty-first century. In 2005, the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens became a nonprofit organization, and since then, attendance has doubled, thanks to the addition of rare animals—including honey badgers, which can only be seen at three other zoos in the nation, buff-cheeked gibbons, striped hyenas, and Malagasy fosas, found in fewer than 20 U.S. zoos. Another factor in the growth of attendance is exciting live shows. The most popular, Safari Canyon, combines captivating facts and wildlife footage with the excitement of live animals. Tim Tezlaff, son of Larry and Nancy Jane Tetzlaff, is now the zoo’s director of conservation and communication. “Our presentations are getting stronger and stronger. We built our reputation on doing public presentations, and that remains one of the strongest parts of the zoo. Education was always key to my parents,” he says. Naples Zoo’s signature fundraiser is ZOObilee. It returns for the third year March 8, 2014, and is themed “Elegant Africa.” The evening’s top auction prize will be a safari trip for two to East Africa hosted by the Naples Zoo staff. u NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

Most foodies and philanthropists in and around Naples are already well acquainted with Brian Roland, who left his executive chef position at M Waterfront Grille in 2012 to launch his chef concierge business, Crave Culinaire. Through his company, Roland and a network of culinary artists bring the finedining experience to their clients’ homes. But the team sees Crave Culinaire as much more than a business venture. By providing their services to local charities, Roland and company realized they could change lives. “Our philanthropic philosophy is driven by raising awareness of all voids of life in an effort to help those in need,” says Roland. “To us, it is a way of life, a way we can truly make a difference.” Since its founding, Crave Culinaire’s chefs and service staff have donated countless hours to events benefiting groups including the Golisano Children’s Hospital of

The Crave Culinaire team donated auction packages worth $2,000 to $5,000 for in-home dining, wine pairings, cooking classes and event planning to dozens of organizations, such as the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples, Naples Junior Women’s Club, St. Matthew’s House, the local Red Cross chapter, Hope for Haiti, PACE Center for Girls, MakeA-Wish Southern Florida and the Neighborhood Health Clinic. “We give to give,” says Roland. “The result has come back to us tenfold from the community awareness of our growing company, to organizations reaching out to collaborate with us on fundraising efforts. by wonderful people who also enjoy giving back,” he adds. “It is a natural thing for all of us, and I am blessed to work with such an amazing team.” Glitter of Success Gleaming jewels embody the spirit of sharing, as jewelry is so often given as gifts. Small wonder that local jewelry designer Amanda Jaron, founder and president of A. Jaron Fine Jewelry, has long embraced the concept of corporate philanthropy. “Giving is the core of our business,” says Jaron. “Most major jewelry pieces are bought as a gift to commemorate a moment in time. I give to silent and live auctions with the same sincerity as a boyfriend buying his girlfriend an engagement ring.” While serving as the head designer for Avon Products’ jewelry division, she managed many of the Avon Foundation’s multimillion-dollar NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

charitable campaigns for causes like breast cancer awareness, ending domestic violence and support for families of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “It is in my corporate blood to think about giving back to those who support my business,” Jaron says. “Jewelry always makes people smile, and giving jewels to a good cause makes me smile, too.” In 2012, Jaron launched The Glitter Foundation Inc., the nonprofit entity through which she donates jewelry to aid charities with fundraising efforts. She has donated jewelry to dozens of local charity auctions, including a cuff co-designed with William Boyajian of Port Royal Jewelers for the 2013 Stiletto Sprint benefiting Susan G. cuffs for breast cancer groups. For the past three years, Jaron has also created a limitededition ring for PACE Center for Girls. Her pieces have raised more than $100,000 at the myriad events she has supported. She’s also a hands-on philanthropist. Jaron is co-chairing the David Lawrence Center signature fundraiser gala, themed “Under the Eiffel Tower: A Journey to 1920s Paris,” January 17, 2014. Proceeds of the event will support programs of the center, which provides treatment services for children and adults experiencing health, emotional, psychological and substance-abuse challenges. Jaron describes her corporate philosophy as paying it forward. “Everyone has their own personal connection to a cause,” she says. “I encourage my employees to reach out to their charity of choice. We’ll host a party free of charge and donate a percentage of the evening’s sales to the nonprofit. This creates a win-win for all.”

Meeting Challenges In addition to providing coverage for more than 10,000 business and personal clients, Gulfshore Insurance, Naples, also seeks to create meaningful change in Collier County through employee volunteerism, community leadership and fundraising support. “Our humanitarian philosophy is simple,” says Brad Havemeier, president. “We recognize that healthy, thriving communities depend on involved citizens, organizations and corporate partners for momentum. Every community has its own challenges, and we want to be part of the solution.” In 2009, the agency introduced the Gulfshore Insurance Helping Hearts, Helping Hands Humanitarian Foundation, an employee-driven initiative that encourages associates to volunteer time to their favorite charities by contributing paid time off for their participation. And since 2009, the firm has donated more than $100,000 raised by

The 2013-2014 choices are the American Cancer Society, Avow, Humane Society Naples, Habitat for Humanity, St. Matthew’s House and The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. “Once selected, each nonprofit is matched with employee liaisons,” explains Havemeier. “These individuals serve as internal spokespersons for each charity. They are also responsible for interacting with their respective organization to identify and communicate the needs of that group.” The Humanitarian Foundation committee meets monthly to plan various fundraising events and activities to garner continued support. (BB&T-OTC), which provides insurance and risk-management services to families and businesses throughout the state, treat philanthropy as a corporate priority, with 85 percent of the company’s workforce engaged in community outreach initiatives. Says Stacey T. Mercado, a spokeswoman for the firm, “It’s all about reaching out and giving back.” The BB&T-OTC Lighthouse Project, held annually in May and June, offers associates an

opportunity to make a difference in their communities through company-supported service projects. Company-wide, since the Lighthouse Project began in 2009, “we have completed more than 5,500 community service projects, provided more than 265,000 volunteer hours, and helped change the lives of more than eight million people,” Mercado says. Case in point: BB&T-OTC staff members volunteered at the Summer Feeding Kick-off in Bonita Springs last May and served 267 families through the Harry Chapin Mobile Food Pantry. More than 16,587 pounds of food was distributed in two hours to help feed 525 adults, 81 seniors and 471 children. And the company recently received a Make More Happen Award from Safeco Insurance for volunteer service that benefited Voices for Kids of Southwest Florida. “We are fortunate to be part of a company with a strong heritage of developing great industry and community leaders,” Mercado says. u NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

last look In the Pink Though it was a lot of fun dancing the night away at many a beautiful soiree last season, the best part was how many groups surpassed their goals in collecting dollars to help others. A few examples: David Lawrence Center’s An Evening in Venice Masquerade Ball netted $551,000—exceeding its goal by $51,000—for mental health and substance-abuse programs. Magic Under the Mangroves, the signature fundraiser for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, surpassed previous years with a record-smashing $950,000 to help protect local water, land and wildlife. And Humane Society Naples’ Pet Lovers Gala took in $1.8 million, thanks partly to a donation match by the Baker Family, to support the no-kill shelter. With so many fabulous events on the way for 2013-2014, we look forward to another season of everything coming
