From The publisher

It’s still fun few years ago, I followed advice about how to use this particular page each month: Inform and entertain, yes, but also include a marketing message to support the magazine. For example, while writing about philanthropy—something near and dear to me—I’d mention the Naples Charity Register, which has become the bible of the social season. That way I could encourage philanthropy and help the publishing business at the same time. I’ve often cited research data I find fascinating, such as the fact that while the world becomes more digital and more mobile, the number of young people reading printed magazines is increasing. For years, it’s been rather easy to promote the incredible growing readership of our magazines and websites (including weddingsillustrated.net, a site you need to see to appreciate). Sometimes, however, finding a marketing tie-in takes a bit of the fun out of writing. I remember the phrase a friend always used about his business: “If it’s not fun, why are we doing it?” While not every aspect of business is a rollicking good time, his point was we should enjoy our work because we spend so much time doing it. The sentiment reminds me of the first enterprise I built, a plastics company. I eventually sold the business to an international conglomerate, allowing me to devote most of my time to philanthropy. A few years into that, however, I realized I still loved business. As good as the plastics industry had been to me, I was inspired to build a different firm that incorporated my love of great photography and words, and offered a platform to make the community better. Thus, a magazine company was born more than two decades ago. In certain office situations—like while I’m in a cover meeting, looking over an art director’s shoulder at an incredible page design or seeing the excited face of one of our advertising account managers who has shown a client how we can grow her business—I realize what a great road we’re traveling. And always, when a new issue of Naples Illustrated reaches my hands, I hear myself saying, “This is really fun.” There is so much about this town, the people we work with, the things we do and the readers we inform that we’ve discovered an endless number of interesting subjects. This is why we produce the best marketing piece there is. I’ll continue writing about the things I find interesting and meaningful and let our great marketing department do what it does. Perhaps like the home run hitter, I’ll knock one out of the park now and then. That, too, will be fun.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Sartorial Strength he lights, the cameras, the clothes. Oh, the clothes! For someone who loves fashion, nothing beats the excitement of a runway show, and this season in Naples has been a thrilling one for wide-eyed fashionistas like myself. It all started with Marissa Hartington of Marissa Collections inviting her dear friend Michael Kors down in November for the sensation that was to be his Hats in the Garden catwalk success. But one event that recently left a big impression was when Carolina Herrera, a high priestess of style, came to Naples to showcase the ethereal, floaty numbers that characterized her Spring 2013 line. The sense of movement she spoke to me about makes those dresses perfect for fashion-savvy Neapolitans; just imagine one of those gowns catching a gentle breeze at a beachside gala (page 54). Her head-turning outfits are still available at Saks Fifth Avenue, which co-hosted the event with the Saint Ann School Foundation. Speaking of Saks, someone once described the branch in the Waterside Shops as a “jewel box of a store”—meaning that it carries only the best of the best of what the already fashion-inclined corporation has to offer. I’ve come to think of Naples as a jewel box of a town. We may not have the population of New York, Paris or London, but we certainly have a similar gravitational pull when it comes to attracting hugely influential fashion world guests. Aside from Kors and Herrera, the ever-fabulous couturier Zang Toi stopped by to share his latest hand-sewn frocks at Nordstrom. While he was there, I couldn’t resist picking his brain on how to make a splash with the power of a well-curated wardrobe (page 58). I’m also pretty darn excited for the premiere of Florida Fashion Week coming up soon (page 52). It says a lot that the impresario who founded similar events in California and elsewhere across the country selected Naples as his city of choice in the state of Florida. And last, but certainly not least, I’m thrilled for our “Leading Ladies” feature (page 84). Our stunning cover model, Jamie Magnus, is a model-rocket scientist. No, that’s not a typo. She’s a Naples gal, and she happens to be an aerospace engineer analyzing flight data for spaceships by day and a glamorous fashion model on the side (something she has done in a professional capacity since age 15). She and the other women we are honoring in our annual fashion issue are the perfect picture of the true meaning of beauty— gorgeous on the inside and out. I know you’ll enjoy getting to know them and how they are making a mark on our community. I know I sure did.

for NI’s annual fashion issue, I’M fired up about:

n A runway show that raised $250,000 for Saint Ann’s (page 54).

ONE-MAN SHOW

Although he is most famous for his role as Carmine “The Big Ragu” Ragusa on the sitcom Laverne & Shirley, the engaging and very funny Eddie Mekka has a deep catalog of stage and screen achievements, plus a rich stash of memories with entertainment industry royalty. The Tony Award-nominated singer-dancer-actor, who appeared as Pseudolus in TheatreZone’s fall production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, returns March 24 for the professional company’s first-ever gala fundraiser (theatrezone-florida.com). —Kat Smith n  Do you prefer film or stage? a line, you better come up with something because it’s live theater. n  Have you ever said no to a project and regretted it later? No, but I should have turned a project down while I was doing it. I was on Broadway in The Magic Show. David Ogden Stiers was in it and so was Anita Morris. Someone said to me, there’s a showcase downtown—that’s where people present acts, but actors don’t get paid unless it goes somewhere. It was called A Chorus

Line. I said, I’m doing a Broadway show, come on! Who knew A Chorus Line was going to be what it was? n  Any actor you’d like to work with? Joe Pesci. I say that because every time I go for a role, I’m either Danny DeVito or Joe Pesci. I would like to do something with Pacino, and a lot of people say with my hair back I look like Robert DeNiro. I do Raging Bull—DeNiro and Pesci talking together. I can’t do it on the phone, but when I see you and I have a few drinks, I’ll do it for you. n  Are you happy to go back to Naples? Yes. I love Naples. I got to relax and see things because we had a couple of days off in November. It’s not Vegas, thank God. I had a great time. It wasn’t long enough!

What’s Here and Happening: BY DOROTHEA HUNTER SÖNNE

Initial Spot Monogram Goods pops into town this spring.

DOROTHEA HUNTER SÖNNE

In grade school, we delighted in imprinting our names on T-shirts, lunchboxes and whatever we could get our hands on. Graduating to adulthood, that longing didn’t go away, but we sought newer and better ways to do it. Putting the mono back in monogram is Laura Melges and her unique products that feature inventive and highly personalized designs. She started her business in Harbor Springs, Michigan, and has branched out by creating a pop-up shop in the home-goods store Garden District. Such boutiques within boutiques have taken the country by storm, and Monogram Goods’ display will be here through April. Melges adorns unexpected items, like beaded clutches, as well as the expected (beach towels, napkins, tote bags). She’ll do just about anything: an insignia based on a seashell motif, or, say, a boxy pattern with five hues. And you get satisfaction in knowing it’s all yours. (monogramgoods.com)

Family Ties She’s instantly recognizable for playing Casey Chapel Davenport on the sitcom Wings, but Amy Yasbeck has starred in more than 10 movies and dozens of TV roles to date. She also attracted attention when her husband, actor John Ritter, died from an aortic dissection in 2003. Yasbeck leads the NAMI Collier County Walk (nami.org) on March 23. —Kat Smith NI: What’s your favorite role so far? Yasbeck: Maid Marian in Mel Brooks’ Robin Hood: Men in Tights. I was working with not just Mel Brooks, but Richard Lewis, Dave Chappelle, Tracy Ullman, Cary Elwes… Every day, it was “Okay, take off your chastity belt and go home,” and I would say no. I’d change into my jeans and hang around and watch Mel direct. How did you discover Naples? My sister, Ann, lives in Fort Myers, and we

went to Florida to see her in 2002. My late husband, John, my daughter, Stella, and I went to Disney World, and then we went to Naples. I have been there two other times. My other sister, Patty, lives in Bonita Springs, and we always end up in Naples, Napling it up. Tell us about your connection to NAMI. My sister Patty has been involved with NAMI for a number of years. Our mother was bipolar. It was the pre-understanding mental illness era. When we were growing up and our mother was ill, we were learning it on the frontlines and in real time. Like anything else, once the taboo is tamed, and the more things come out into the light, it’s very helpful. Organizations like, and especially, NAMI, help families and support people with mental illness. … It puts the NAMI in phe-NAMI-nal! What are you working on now? Webisodes for AOL.com called Little Women, Big Cars, about carpool moms. And I run the John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health and the John Ritter Research Program in Houston. I just started an art website, the John Ritter Foundation Gallery (fromtheheartgallery.com), where artists sell original art and prints, with a big hunk of proceeds going to the foundation.

high-energy hybrid of fashion, food and cultural expression lights up Bayfront April 1 to 7, as Florida Fashion Week (fashionweeknaples.com) means seven nights of special

events designed to enthrall stylistas of all stripes. Dave Soko, a California-based entertainment entrepreneur, is bringing the extravaganza to the city, saying it is “an event designed to elevate Naples’ fashion and culture by creating a platform for presentations on local, national and international levels, as well as providing education, funding and support.” In true Naples style, part of the proceeds will benefit Make a Wish Southern Florida and St. Matthew’s House.

RUNAWAY SUCCESS Carolina Herrera is not just a designer, she’s a fashion icon. At 74 years old, the Venezuelan-born winner of the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s lifetime achievement award is the picture of poise, grace and creative energy—and she shows no signs of slowing down. She visited Naples this season to present her Spring 2013 collection at a luncheon hosted by the Saint Ann School Foundation and Saks Fifth Avenue that raised $250,000 for scholarships. And if you’re sensitive about something, avoid totally masking it. For example, find a dress or shirt that’s sleeveless but has a drape near the arms to show a hint of skin but also give coverage.” Be aware of comfort. “It’s in the balance. You want to look and feel good. If you’re going to an outdoor gala and there’s a breeze, rather than wearing a shawl, put on a wrap with sleeves. I’ve been making them consistently since the ’90s because they are so great. They won’t slide off, and you can throw the longer sides across your chest if you’re cold. And try wearing it backwards! It gives a completely different look, one that’s elegant but will be sure to make people do a double take.” u 58  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

The Fifth Element During the past several months, Fifth Avenue South (FAS) has boomed with a rush of new restaurants, an expansion to its iconic inn and a concerted effort by the street’s occupants to make it a good-times-for-all destination. The Inn on Fifth has expanded with Club Level Suites in a brand new building.

Suite View A longtime fixture, the Inn on Fifth (innonfifth.com) has been busy, busy, busy revamping and expanding for modern times. In addition to a redesign of the original hotel, the property branched out across the street to a sparkling new building with 32 cool, contemporary Club Level Suites (left). When a sugar craving takes hold, these spots are to the rescue: n  Grace & Shelly’s Cupcakes (graceandshellys cupcakes.com) bakes a brown sugar caramel Treat that is our particular brand of kryptonite. n  Adelheidi’s Organic Sweets (239-304-9870) offers crepes and baked goods, but nothing beats the gelato on a sunny day, especially in exciting flavors (avocado, chocolate chili, lavender). n  Abbott’s Frozen Custard (abbottscustard.com) serves the frosty indulgence, but also houses the Mon“Key” Bread Factory (monkeybreadfactory.com). Anyone who hasn’t tried a warm, gooey Key lime Mon“key”buntz simply hasn’t lived. n  Cafe LurÇat (cafelurcat.com) whips up fabulous cuisine, but we secretly wish we could start with dessert—the restaurant is known for its warm, irresistibly cute little sugar-cinnamon donuts.

The beautiful Sugden Community Theatre (above) is the jewel in the crown of the FAS arts scene. It is home to The Naples Players (naplesplayers.org), a critically acclaimed community group that reaches a major milestone this month—its sixtieth anniversary, which will be feted at a glittering gala fundraiser March 18 at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. The remaining shows this season include The Producers, through March 30; The Mousetrap, April 17-May 11; and The Clean House, March 27-April 30. The Sugden’s stage is also where Classic Chamber Concerts (classicchamberconcerts.org) performs during season; the March 4 and 11 acts feature the Fifth Avenue Chamber Orchestra.

Chef Keith Casey’s sophisticated renditions of American classics, like the Zinfandel braised short ribs pictured here, lure diners to his intimate boîte, KC American Bistro (kcamericanbistro.com) in North Naples. But like any successful business owner, he sought ways to grow, and this month marks an expansion tripling the size of his dining room. The menu will stay the same, and the only difference is that you’ll have less of a wait for one of the coveted tables.

Trend Alert:

Low-cal—but definitely not low on flavor—menu options When living in Florida (or visiting), it’s hard not to think about the calories in whatever you’re eating. We’d all love to have a steady diet of fried calamari, spaghetti carbonara and chocolate mousse and be bikini ready, but in adulthood something’s gotta give. A trend we’ve seen lately that has really taken root is printing calorie counts on menus. Starbucks and other quick-serve joints need to do it by law, but the ethos has worked its way into fine-dining establishments, too, in order to denote dishes under 500 calories (roughly a third of an adult’s total daily food intake). We were thrilled when Seasons 52 (239-594-8852) brought its concept to Naples last year. The sleek eatery uptown is completely based on the idea that indulgence doesn’t need to be sinful. Every item served is under 475 calories, including a rich goat cheese ravioli and a handful of desserts, like mini Key-lime pie. Also new on the scene last year, Agave Southwestern Grill (239-598-3473), a venue by a local restaurateurs Don and Angela Smith, designates every dish that’s under 450 calories as well as ones that are under 250 calories. The zesty plates, like Peruvian ceviche and traditional Mexican tortilla soup, are some of the best we’ve tasted in town. Plus in late 2012 the restaurant rolled out special menus for gluten-free, vegetarian and low-carb diners. Ask for them when you arrive, or mention you’d like one when reserving a table, and the staff will automatically know to give you the special carte when you sit down. Last, but not least, on a recent excursion to Fifth Avenue South’s longtime upscale comfort food standby, Cafe Lurçat (239-213-3357), we spotted a “sub-500” category and enjoyed an excellent ahi tuna with lemon confit and ponzu. (FYI, also new: The restaurant is now only offering dinner service, except lunches during big daytime community events on the avenue.) —Dorothea Hunter Sönne

Bottoms Up at Bayfront The Naples Craft Beer Fest returns for a second year. With the official arrival of spring, a tasty, cool brew quaffed in the open air is super appealing. The Naples North Rotary Foundation, in partnership with Coastal Beverage, will quench the craving at the Second Annual Naples Craft Beer Fest (naplescraftbeerfest.com) on March 2 at Bayfront. There will be tastings of more than 60 beers from breweries across the country, plus food pairings from Agave Southwestern Grill, Avenue Wine Café, Boston Beer Garden, Chef Paul, South Street Bar & Grill, Tavern on the Bay, The Pub, Turtle Club and Wynn’s Market. Rocky Patel’s Burn cigar bar will also participate, and live music will complete the party. Entry fee includes drinks, food and a commemorative tasting glass. Cheers! —Kat Smith

First Glimpse:

THE WINE LOFT Days after this independent small-plates eatery and wine bar opened up, we stopped by for a look. Absolutely packed and brimming with action, the vast indoor-outdoor set-up somehow maintains a cozy feel while still abuzz. We have high expectations, and we especially liked the peek-a-boo, double-sided counter with seats near the entrance and the curtain-draped group lounge area farther back. The prime Mercato location is one more reason we anticipate uncorking many a night there. (thewineloftofnaples.com) —D.H.S.

Drink of the Month: Let’s play a quick word association game: words to describe cocktails. Bitter, dry, sweet, strong—spicy? Yes, your faithful editrix was surprised, too, when she first sipped a peppery margarita on vacation in New York City last year. The tingling from the habanerosteeped libation left an impression, and she got hot under the collar realizing the new Masa (masa-restaurant.com) is serving up a similar drink. The Margarita de Diabolita (right) isn’t just tequila with a twist. It’s a nuanced balance of hot pepper, ginger, lime, blood orange and pomegranate juice. And it had her chanting arriba all night long. —D.H.S.

The 5th Avenue Coffee Company, a downtown institution pouring java to locals and tourists alike from its can’t-be-beat locale, got a fresh coat of paint, literally and figuratively. The owners, who took over in 2008, have slowly made alterations that culminated this year with the addition of 600 square feet to the space and a full kitchen. With the latter also came a new name, 5th Avenue Coffee Company & 6th Street Diner (5thavncoffeeco.com), free WiFi, and an expanded menu with burgers, wraps and paninis. Some of the decor was left untouched to keep the Old Florida feel, like the retro weathered tables, original 1954 flooring and art deco façade. It’s open daily until at least 9 p.m. (10 p.m. on weekends), so grab a chair outside, have a bite and watch the passers-by. —D.H.S.

Austrian Waltz

American palates dance to the notes of the Central European nation’s unique varietals. By Mark Spivak

Thanks to the splash Austria’s signature white, Grüner Veltliner, made on this side of the Atlantic some years back, the country’s wines are gradually claiming their rightful place in the American market. Grüner established a firm foothold in the United States in the late 1990s when it became a trendy fixture on wine lists in Las Vegas, where many of our country’s top sommeliers are located. At one point, Aureole in Mandalay Bay reportedly had 150 of them on its list of 4,000 selections. The trend has since receded, but Grüner is now part of our wine landscape. Much of its appeal is centered on its versatility with food. Grüner is a charm with fish and shellfish and is one of the few wines that play well with vegetables—even wineunfriendly ones, such as asparagus and artichokes. The wine comes in a variety of styles: The steep vineyards of the picturesque Wachau region produce a firm, mineral-based bottling, while the versions grown in Kremstal and Kamptal display spiciness and richer fruit. Grüner accounts for nearly one-third of vineyard plantings in Austria, although most of the wine is consumed locally when young. Leading producers include Hirsch, Willi Bründlmayer, Lenz Moser and Schloss Gobelsburg. While some bottles can fetch $35$40, the Hirsch Veltliner #1 is widely available for $18. Connoisseurs will tell you that Austrian Riesling is even better than Grüner, and this may be true. The grape thrives in the terraced vineyards of Wachau, where the soil and climate are similar to the Rhine Valley in many ways. The wine tends to be rich in texture, with intriguing hints of white pepper, and pairs well with fish in substantial sauces, as well as with white meats. Many of the wineries that make Grüner also produce Riesling. Excellent examples can be had from Loimer, Proidl and F.X. Pichler; prices begin at $10 and soar up to $65 for the best wines. When it comes to reds, most Americans are on unfamiliar ground, probably because the names of the grape varieties are somewhat unwieldy. Blaufränkisch (otherwise known as Lemberger) is capturing the attention of the public with a fresh, medium-bodied and juicy texture similar

72  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Whether whites or less-common reds are poured, Austrian wines earn stirring reviews across the board.

to Pinot Noir. Good versions available in the States include Walter Glatzer, Sepp Moser and Weninger, all selling for less than $20. By far the most widely planted red wine grape is Zweigelt, which is actually a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. Racy and lively, packed with crisp acidity, red fruits and spice, Zweigelt is similar to Grüner in that it so friendly to food. Most bottles are in the $10 to $15 range and match up very well with white and red meats, stews and game dishes. Historically Austria was known for dessert wines, but the market for those collapsed after the 1985 scandal in which a handful of producers were found to

be adding diethylene glycol to make the wines taste sweeter. The industry shifted to dry white wines in the wake of that controversy, and the popularity of sweeter Austrian wine has only returned in the past decade. The best of these wines come from the eastern region of Lake Neusiedl (or Neusiedlersee), where climate conditions favor the incidence of botrytis, or “noble rot.” Producers such as Kracher and Hans Schwarz have been instrumental in returning the reputation of Austria’s dessert wine to its former glory, and the bottles are bargains compared to their German counterparts. That’s a development worth yodeling about. u

First Class EPIC ETHIOPIA A helicopter safari over the East African nation’s highlands exposes intrepid souls to majestic landscapes and cultural treasures. daphne nikolopoulos

by Daphne Nikolopoulos

There are many fine places in the world to have breakfast. On the plains of the Masai Mara after a predawn hot air balloon ride. On a balcony of the Plaza Athénée overlooking the Eiffel Tower. On a riverboat crossing the Chao Praya as the sun rises over gilded Thai temples.

By air visitors gain access to Ethiopia’s remotest regions, such as the Simien Mountains.

78  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

But nothing—I mean nothing—comes close to this. We are flying in a Eurocopter AStar through the Simien Mountains in the remotest stretch of Ethiopia, in and out of windswept gorges that make the Grand Canyon look like a gully. The pilot, Ben Simpson, a Briton living in Kenya who bears an uncanny resemblance to Robert Redford in Out of Africa, points to an insanely narrow outcropping and says, “How’s everybody feeling?” For a split second, I think he’s kidding. But then he brings the chopper down on

a strip about 10 feet wide with precipices dropping hundreds of feet on either side, landing dead center. The man is an artist. “Right,” he says as the rest of us exhale. “Coffee?” It’s a hell of a way to start the morning. We eat homemade donuts with Tigrayan smoked honey and sip strong java on the rooftop of Ethiopia, surrounded by basalt cliffs sculpted by the eternal winds. The air is vaguely perfumed with thyme, which grows wild in these mountains. A gentle breeze gives lift to the birds hovering above the canyon. We search for the rare Lammergeier vulture that sometimes circles this rock formation, but it is feeling shy today. We are far too awestruck to miss it. This improbable breakfast sums up the experience of a helicopter safari: It takes you to the uninhabited ends of the earth in an adrenaline-fueled flash journey that, paradoxically, seems to unfold in slow motion. A trip such as this one, organized and made seamless by UK bespoke travel company Journeys by Design ( journeysbydesign.com), is a must in a place like Ethiopia, where the distances are long and there is a vast amount of detail to take in. Traveling the highlands by road is flat compared to the 3D panorama of being inside the mountain ranges, next to the elemental layers of rock, seeing every fissure and shadow.

The Gheralta mountain range as seen through the Daniel Korkor cave church.

Before landing for breakfast, we spent the day in Gheralta, a high mountain plateau where monks built churches and monasteries into the sandstone caves as early as the fourth century, when Christianity first took hold in Ethiopia. The helicopter can land near eight of these, including Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, nestled so deep within a high cliff they are barely discernible from the air, let alone the ground. Access is not for the faint of heart— think two-hour hike through rocky, vertical terrain—but it has its rewards: The churches have magnificent murals, tombs and architecture, all testaments to the spirit of the men who have tended them for centuries. After a night at the remote Gheralta Lodge (gheraltalodgetigrai.com), built by an Italian couple to mimic a Tigrayan village (but with all modern conveniences), we take off for Lalibela and its legendary twelfth-century rock churches. Simpson circles above the town to give us an aerial glimpse of Bete Giyorgis, the church of St. George, chiseled of a single piece of rock in a perfect cruciform shape about 100 feet into the ground. From above, it looks like a jewel dangling in a dark void: a remark-

able feat of engineering and masonry. These 11 medieval churches, collectively a UNESCO World Heritage site, are carved with columns, arches and keyhole windows, and decorated with frescoes that remain brilliant to this day. They are connected by a network of trenches and subterranean tunnels, adding to the mystique. No amount of time seems enough in Lalibela, but the next morning we move on. Flying south to Addis Ababa, we make a detour through the Blue Nile Gorge, following the river as it cuts through an arid canyon. As we land on a pebbled shoreline near a farming village, women and children spill down a hillside to see what the commotion is.

Clockwise from center: Looking out from the cockpit; a priest and keeper of the keys on a cliff in Gheralta; Maryam Korkor church.

At first they look at us as if we’ve descended from outer space: five wind-burned creatures stepping out of a noisy craft that raises a frenzy of dust and rock as it touches down. We try to speak to them but they back off, suspicious of our intentions. In the end, it’s technology that binds us. I snap a few photos with my iPhone and show them. Emboldened by their giggles, I share photos of my children; in a tender gesture, one woman kisses my son’s photo on the phone.

Our lives may be worlds apart, but we are both mothers and that connects us on a fundamental level. On one hand, four days on the helicopter pass too quickly; on the other, the experience has been so rich, it feels like weeks have gone by. As a return visitor to Ethiopia, I can honestly say viewing the country from above and entering its untrammeled realms is like the difference between a gem in the rough and a polished View the “Wings Over one: a priceless treasure Ethiopia” video on brought to life. u NAPLESllustrated.com.

high road

aural sensation Few cars off the racetrack deliver such a breathtaking wall of sound as the Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster. Listen up. BY HOWARD WALKER

I’ve never been one to quote poetry in my humble automotive scribblings. Maybe there was the odd bawdy limerick commencing with, “There once was a ... .” But never poetry of the deep and meaningful kind. Then I eased behind the wheel of the fearsome new MercedesBenz SLS AMG Roadster, caressed the blood-red starter button, fired up, drove off and spent the better part of a week tumbling head over heels in lust with this road-going, intercontinental ballistic missile. The love affair involved getting down on bended knee in front of the SLS and quoting, with hand on heart, the first line of that sentimental sonnet penned in 1845 by the English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning: “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” There are many, indeed. Here is the canvas-topped version of Mercedes’ thundering gullwing-doored SLS Coupe, a car I loved with equal passion when I first drove it a couple of years back. 82  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Of course, that was after I recovered from the repeated concussions from whacking my head on those levitating doors, which don’t quite levitate high enough. There’s no such cranial-concussing problem with the SLS Roadster. Ease back on a center-console-mounted flap, and the threelayer fabric top whizzes back in a mere 11 seconds. This is truly the Usain Bolt of convertible tops. Stickerwise, you’ll pay $206,000 for the Roadster, which is $6,500 more than the Coupe. Choose from the laundry list of options that includes everything from the 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen stereo ($6,400) to the carbon-fiber engine covers ($5,400) and you’ll easily get to the $231,325 price of our test car. But let me count the ways driving this topless SLS will have you quoting Ms. Browning’s second line: “I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach.” Here, the love is one of sound. Folding the Merc’s top puts you front row and in direct earshot at one of the greatest rock concerts

ever from the band “SLS and the Atomic Tail Pipes.” Rev the Merc’s hand-built, 6.3-liter, 583-horsepower, aluminum and magnesium V-8. Linda Blair in The Exorcist never had this many evil voices. It snaps and snarls, barks and bangs. And that’s just when you fire it up. For the full AC/DC-meets-Guns N’ Roses-meets-Metallica soundtrack, find yourself a curvy country backroad and have at it. As the revs soar, the big V-8 emits the most glorious deep, bellowy, NASCAR-esque thunder. This is the sound of Smokey Bear clearing his throat after winter hibernation or Alice Cooper gargling with chicken heads. But for the pièce de résistance, approach a tight curve, pull back once, twice on the steering column-mounted paddle shifters from 70 mph, revel in the 100-millisecond kick-down and listen in wonder to the staccato snap, crackle and pop played through those storm-drain exhausts. As you might expect, it goes like a bat out of hell. Zero to 60 mph is covered in a blistering, head-snapping, knee-trembling 3.6 seconds. Flat out, you’ll see the world go by at a whisker under 200 mph. Those light-switch-quick shifts are delivered from the SLS’s

seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic. Playing tunes using those metallic paddle shifters is one of the great joys of driving this car. But driver, beware; this baby can bite. Get overenthusiastic with the right pedal mid-corner, and it’ll happily step out of line. Those 583 horseys break the traction of the almost foot-wide rear tires. A quick flick of the laser-precise, beautifully weighted steering will usually restore the status quo. Usually. There’s nothing nimble or delicate about this droptop SLS. This is no Ferrari, McLaren or Lamborghini. Here is a modern-day, hairy-chested muscle car in the vein of a ’70s big-block Corvette. It’s a blunt instrument in a world of precision supercars. And that’s part of its immense appeal. It’s one of the countless ways I adored driving it and went into mild depression when I handed back the keys. How do I love thee? Simply 583 horsepower ways. And counting. u

Since her days at Community School of Naples, she has posed for various magazines and fashion campaigns, and continues to do so for fun. Her day job, though, is equally if not more enthralling—to analyze flight data for Dream Chaser, a spacecraft being tested this year that is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program carrying astronauts to the International Space Station. Living now in Colorado, Magnus finds any excuse to visit Collier County to spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the community she grew up in.

What can’t you leave home without? My favorite necklace—it is a simple gold chain with the diamond from my grandmother's engagement ring. I’m wearing it now. Words to live by: “You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.” —Annie Dillard Hobbies: I was fortunate enough to get my pilot’s license at Naples Municipal Airport when I was 17 years old, and I love to be up in the air. Sweetest part of success: Waking up every morning knowing that I am doing what I have always wanted to do and having the job of my dreams. My grandpa always told me that when you love what you do, you never truly work a day in your life. What do you most miss about Naples when you’re not here? My family! Naples will always be home. Favorite place in town: Waterside Shops. I think I would like to be a fashion designer in my next life. How does it feel to be a “leading lady”? I am so very honored and humbled. I have worked really hard to get to where I am in my career, but never expected to be recognized for it. My only hope is that someday I can fully live up to it and inspire the next generation to aim high.

When Krista Fogelsong initially arrived in Southwest Florida, she knew she had found a place she loved. But it wasn’t until an opportunity to be closer to family up north pulled her away from an anchor post at FOX 4 (a position where Fogelsong earned the respect and trust of both Collier and Lee County residents) that she realized the Paradise Coast was indeed her home. Last year marked her return, and she couldn’t be happier. She’s now at the morning desk for NBC2 News Today, and the former night owl is grateful every minute—even waking up at 3 a.m. to host her first broadcast at 5 a.m.—and her fans are grateful, too. Name a woman who inspires you: My mom. She is selfless, always helping others and a great listener. Sweetest part of success: Being able to use my local celebrity status to help charities. I love giving back and meeting the friendly people here. I

Komen for the Cure, MDA and Multiple Sclerosis Society, to name a few. Describe your personal style in three words: Fun, flashy and fearless. Beauty essentials: MAC Blot Powder and Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray (because it works and smells good). Guilty pleasure: White cake with white frosting, preferably wedding cake. Hobbies: I like to think of myself as a competitive sheller. My husband, friends, family and I will go out at the crack of dawn if it’s low tide to find good shells. We all compete to find the “shell of the day.” Describe your perfect Naples weekend: Lunch on Third Street South, a bike ride through Port Royal, dinner on Fifth Avenue South and then spending the rest of the time at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, enjoying the beautiful white sand and luxurious accommodations. What would people be surprised by about you? I got to sing the Ronnie Spector part of “Take Me Home Tonight” with Eddie Money at a concert in 2007 in North Fort Myers. Shannon Franklin has a passion for cinema, and it shows. She is a driving force behind the current influx of top-notch art films to Naples and the expanding reach of our cultural scene. After growing up here, Franklin relocated to the bright lights of Hollywood with her University of Florida theater degree in hand, and she spent 10 years acting, doing voice-over work and even co-founding a small film production company. When she and her husband decided to move to Naples in 2008, little did she know a return to her hometown would net the job of her life: A tiny film festival with big aspirations was starting up and needed help. Before she knew it, she was running the whole operation, which is celebrating its fifth year this fall. Her vision and ambition are putting it on the international map, and we caught up with her just before she jetted to the famous Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, to source and scout movies for the milestone anniversary program November 7 to 10 at Silverspot Cinema.

What would people be surprised by about you? I have my Screen Actors Guild card, and one day I’d love to star in a Broadway musical and play drums in a rock band. Of course, I’d have to learn to play first! Hobbies: I pretty much live, sleep and breathe movies. Guilty pleasure: Spending a weekend catching up on my favorite TV shows. Best beauty advice: Always wear sunscreen. What would you bring to a desert island? Electricity, a Blu-ray player and my Apple TV. What’s on your bookshelf? I'm a voracious reader. On a daily basis I read the entertainment trades like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, but for fun I love sci-fi, fantasy or anything supernatural. Most prized possession: A Murano glass love knot my husband and I found on our honeymoon in Venice. Hidden talent: Bowling! I played on a league when I was growing up. Stress reliever: Eating large amounts of dark chocolate. Early bird or night owl? These days… both! How does it feel to be a “leading lady”? When I came back to Naples, I had no idea what was in store. I get the opportunity to work with people excited about film, and I’m so proud of what we’ve built with the festival. Recognition like this is humbling. I feel very lucky. NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2013  89

Born and raised in Naples, Lili Montes loves it and is here for the long haul. Her zeal for the city is evident in Sea Salt, the ever-popular bastion of fine dining on Third Street South that she founded and runs with Fabrizio and Ingrid Aielli. Team Aielli’s winning recipe has worked as well on nearby hot spot Barbatella that Montes manages—it’s an Italian trattoria and super-chic wine bar that opened last season. When not seen at Sea Salt or Barbatella, Montes can be found spending time with the two Davids in her life: fiancé David Contreras, a wine entrepreneur and owner of Bottles of Naples, and her son David, 21. Words to live by: You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. Sweetest part of success: The ability to share my time, talents and treasures with

How do you give back? I’m the president of the Training Kids Foundation; I inherited the position after the passing of its founder, Nane Kimijan. I also co-chair the Nane Kimijan Memorial Scholarship Fund with Ingrid [Kimijan’s sister]. Favorite quote: From Dr. Seuss: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” That simple quote got me through the most devastating period in my life. Guilty pleasures: Champagne and truffle fries. What can’t you live without? My iPhone. Last big social event on your calendar? The Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest dinner and auction at Miromar Lakes. What would people be surprised by about you? I’m 100 percent Cuban. Name a woman who inspires you: My mom. She’s 84 and wears me out! She has a lot of energy and a great sense of style. What are you looking forward to? Turning 50 this summer. The most amazing ladies I know are over 50.

Part of a media dynasty with roots in Naples, Caroline Beasley could have easily relished the success built by her father. Instead, she pushed herself and joined him to lead the family’s national network of radio stations. She was instrumental in structuring the company’s IPO several years back, and she plays a key role in the broadcast group as it continues to flourish and expand. A dedicated daughter, wife and mother, Beasley is also deeply committed to giving back. In addition to the five Southwest Florida radio stations under the corporate umbrella that support local charities, Beasley herself is involved with philanthropic pursuits: She’s on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Broadcasters and a committee member for the Healthy Media Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls, plus she was recently named an honorary trustee of the National Alliance for Women in Media Foundation.

Between work and travel, if I can get some quiet time at my house, I feel like I’m in heaven. What are you most proud of? My children. Daniel, 18, is a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Ilana, 15, is a sophomore at Community School of Naples. They are now beautiful young adults. What can’t you live without? Green tea. I have at least three cups a day! Stress relievers: I have two things: exercise for my physical and mental health, and I also love to listen to my daughter play the piano and sing. When I come home from a long day at the office, if she’s playing, it is very calming. Hidden talent: My mom taught me how to make biscuits, and I have finally mastered it. Now, I’m on to learning how to make her delicious homemade gravy. Well Suited

Navigating the world of custom men’s Tailoring.

Made-to-order clothing can be intimidating. Even the suavest gent’s head could spin when asked to take control over every fabric, cut, button and lining (not to mention the anxiety pangs of decision fatigue often make the thought of starting the process a fleeting one). But whether you want bespoke, custom or made-to-measure, an expert clothier will guide you through each step along the way. No matter the final decision, the goal is the same: being the best-dressed man in the room. Old-world bespoke tailoring is the most personalized—and expensive—option in men’s suiting. Shorthand for “bespoken

for,” the centuries-old tradition founded on London’s famed Savile Row involves one single tailor crafting the suit from scratch. The process is time-consuming for both tailor and customer. A fully handmade two-piece suit can take more than 50 hours of sewing, and in-person fittings are required at each stage. Frank Rostron, a suit maker to the stars who lives in Naples, promises that patience will be rewarded. Fabric runs in his blood: His mother worked at a local cotton mill, and Rostron began selling bespoke shirts at the age of 19. By word of mouth, he grew his business into an internationally

By Lauren Daniels

Quick Facts All prices depend on the fabric selections and are for suits (custom shirts alone are considerably less); manufacturing time is the same for each, estimated at four to six weeks.

Bespoke: Price: upwards of $6,000. Multiple in-person fittings are required. Highly dedicated and personalized service is its hallmark; tailors often stay closely connected to clients for years on end.

Custom: Price: upwards of $3,000. This is a better option than bespoke for frequent travelers who still want a truly customized fit and seek to cultivate a strong bond with a tailor.

Made-to-Measure: Price: upwards of $1,000. On average, a garment of this kind costs 25 percent more than an offthe-rack suit. Make sure the retailer has a tailor in-house. You want the person taking the measurements to be as involved in the construction process as possible.

Final Cut: the Anatomy of a suit English, American or Italian The classic English style typically has two buttons, a tapered waist and neat, slim shoulder pads. The armholes are higher than the American style, and the jacket is fastened at the waist, making the jacket appear longer. The English suit is the shape of most business attire. Modern and slim fit silhouettes that are de rigueur in fashion circles can be traced back to Italian roots. Trademarks of Italian tailoring include a sleek, close-to-the-body fit, jackets with fully padded shoulders and no vents in the back, and flapless pockets that de-emphasize the waist and draw the eye to the shoulder for a pronounced V silhouette. Popularized by the Ivy Leaguers of the 1920s, the American look is characterized by a three-button jacket closure and a more relaxed fit through the waist.

recognized brand with a store in London. After 42 years dressing Wall Street impresarios, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and celebrities (Harry Connick Jr. is among his fans), Rostron stepped away from the company he built and “retired” to Naples, where he continues to work with some of his most high-profile clients. “I missed my guys,” he says. Working closely with men for years and sometimes decades, Rostron has spent weddings, divorces and vacations with them—that’s how close a relationship people can develop with a tailor of his caliber. Custom tailoring, another option, may be a better route for those who want a fully customized garment but do not want the dedication of time or expense of bespoke tailoring. Like bespoke tailoring, the pattern for a custom suit is created from scratch and is unique to each customer. “A big part of my business is to educate my clients on how to select the right options so they are getting the best use out of them for their lifestyle,” says Joseph Wendt, owner of Joseph’s Custom Clothiers with locations in Naples and New York. After

Personal Ties: Frank Rostron’s Tips on Selecting a Tailor n  Ask around your personal and professional networks for recommendations. “You wouldn’t want to look in the Yellow Pages when you decide to spend $5,000 on a suit,” he says. n  Don’t underestimate the importance of getting along with your tailor. Rostron’s deep connections to his clients are the driving reason why he is semi-retired instead of fully retired. n  In this case, the cheapest option is not likely the best. Quality fabric is the cornerstone of a suit. He advises to ask what mills the tailor is working with; the finest are English and Italian.

selecting fabrics and discussing the desired fit, more than 30 measurements are transformed into a handmade suit by a group of master tailors. Wendt may be new to Naples (his boutique opened in 2011), but he is not new to the custom clothing business. The original location opened on New York’s Long Island in 1994, and Wendt has worked with the same group of craftsmen for the past 20 years. There’s no question a garment from his store or another like it will be of the highest quality, perfect for discerning, cosmopolitan customers. Made-to-measure, the last and most accessible and affordable option, is available in most high-end department stores and national brands, such as Brooks Brothers. The major point of difference between made-to-measure and other custom options is the pattern. Where bespoke and custom suits are hand-constructed from original patterns created for each customer, madeto-measure suits are machine-made based upon experienced fitters adjusting existing patterns. Rich Biegel, president of Peter Millar Tailored Clothing, sold at Nordstrom in the Waterside Shops, points out that customers will still have a pattern at the factory with their name on it for a fraction of the cost of other custom options. In the end, though, it’s a matter of finding the right fit for you. u

POWER Today’s highest-performance sports cars combine brawn and beauty in one hot, fast package.

116  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

BY HOWARD WALKER

In the ’70s, the world’s most powerful and stylish cars, like Ferrari’s Daytona and Lamborghini’s Miura, packed a heady 350 horsepower. Today, you can buy a Ford Mustang with 650 horsepower and a Chevy Camaro with 550 horses. For our annual fashion issue, we look at 10 of the most potent—and super-sleek— hypercars available. Are you ready to see and be seen commanding 1,350 horses?

King of the Hill

POWERFUL DETAILS Engine: 8-liter quad turbo W-16 Power: 1,200 horsepower at 6,400 rpm Torque: 1,106 pound-feet at 3,0005,000 rpm Transmission: 7-speed automatic 0-60: 2.5 seconds Top speed: 255 mph Price: $2.3 million

BUGATTI Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse What you have here is quite simply the world’s fastest, most powerful production convertible money can buy. With an insane 1,200 horsepower delivered by Bugatti’s 8-liter, 16-cylinder, quad-turbo nuclear reactor, this latest Veyron can zoom from standstill to 60 mph in an incomprehensible 2.5 seconds. While this same engine punched a Veyron Super Sport coupe to a record top speed of 267.81 mph last year, in the interest of follicle protection, Bugatti rightly tames the Vitesse’s top speed to a Hair Club For Men-approved 255 mph. Alas, with the carbon-fiber hardtop removed and abandoned at home (there’s no place for it inside the vehicle), the car’s aerodynamics go to pot, so you won’t go much faster than 233 mph. But let’s not forget at that speed, the world screams past at a staggering 341 feet every second. Rumor has it this $2.3 million Grand Sport Vitesse—French for “speed,” which seems a little redundant—is the grand finale of the car that changed how we define sports cars when it debuted back in 2003. Grab yours while you can.

The Texas Tearaway HENNESSEY Venom GT Spyder Usually, when a gentleman of a certain age drops $1.1 million on an outrageously quick supercar, your first thought is probably divorce or midlife crisis—or both. But when the sexagenarian is Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler, you think, “That’s cool.” Tyler drove off into the Malibu sunset in the very first Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, a new targa-topped version of Texas-based Hennessey Performance Engineering’s insanely fast, obscenely powerful 1,244-horsepower Venom GT supercar. While the Venom is loosely based on the tiny-tot Lotus Elise, it’s as different as night and day. It’s nearly three feet longer and almost six inches wider, and its wheelbase stretches nearly 20 inches to accommodate Hennessey’s manic twin-turbo 7-liter Corvette-based V-8. And this new carbon-bodied Venom GT Spyder defines “manic.” Tipping the scales at just 1,244 kilos (that’s 2,743 pounds) and with John Hennessey’s mantra of “one horsepower for every kilo of weight,” the car’s performance is mind-blowing. Off the line, 60 mph comes up in just 2.5 seconds, while top speed— still estimated right now—should be in the region of 275 mph. Our two-word recommendation for Mr. Tyler: heart medication.

POWERFUL DETAILS Engine: 7-liter twin turbo V-8 Power: 1,244 horsepower at 6,500 rpm Torque: 1,200 poundfeet at 5,500 rpm Transmission: 6-speed manual 0-60: 2.5 seconds Top speed: 275 mph (estimated) Price: $1.1 million

POWERFUL DETAILS Engine: 6-liter twin turbo V-12 Power: 720 horsepower Torque: 737 pound-feet Transmission: 7-speed automated manual 0-60: 3 seconds Top speed: 225 mph (estimated) Price: $1.3 million

Italian stallion PAGANI Huayra Its chassis is made from titanium-infused carbon fiber. Its 720-horsepower V-12 engine is handmade especially for the car by Mercedes’ AMG division. It has eight exhaust tailpipes. Oh, and it’s built by a company you’ve probably never heard of. This is the Pagani Huayra, pronounced “why-ra” and loosely meaning “God of the winds” in Quechua. An Argentine businessman-cum-car-designer named Horacio Pagani lovingly bolts it together in Modena, Italy. Pagani has been building midengined, scissor-doored supercars since the late ’90s. His first was the wild-child Zonda, of which more than 200 were built. 118  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

The Huayra takes the Zonda to the next level of driving thrills, using active aerodynamics—little flaps at each corner that, much like an F-16 fighter jet, move independently and alter the down force. Important stuff when you’re blasting into a sweeping righthander at the Nürburgring at 175 mph. And the Huayra does blast. With its midmounted 6-liter AMG twin-turbo V-12 with a full head of steam, it’ll reportedly streak from standstill to 60 mph in around three seconds and won’t quit till the speedo is kissing the 225-mph mark. If you have $1.3 million burning a hole in your chinos, Mr. Pagani will happily put you on the waiting list for his new baby, though deliveries stateside won’t start until summer.

POWERFUL DETAILS Engine: 5-liter twin turbo V-8 Power: 1,140 horsepower at 7,100 rpm Torque: 885 pound-feet at 4,200 rpm Transmission: 7-speed automated manual 0-60: 2.9 seconds Top speed: 273 mph (estimated) Price: $2.5 million

Super Swede KOENIGSEGG Agera R Count from one to 21. Now imagine searing from zero to 186 mph, standing on the brakes and slamming back to zero in 21.19 seconds, to be precise—a new Guinness World Record. Now that’s supercar performance. The Koenigsegg Agera R, Sweden’s newest and finest, shattered this production car record with ease. This $2.5 million carbon-fiber projectile is the creation of Christian von Koenigsegg. Since the early 2000s, he’s been cranking out amazing speed machines considered by supercar aficionados as some of the most sophisticated and technically advanced in the business. The Agera R is a true performance blunt instrument. It gets its

considerable power from a longitudinally midmounted, race-spec 5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 developed in-house by Mr. K. Depending on what kind of fuel you put in its tank—it’s happy to run on ethanol—the big V-8 can crank out an almighty 1,140 horses and more than 800 pound-feet of axle-bending torque. Foot to the floor, that translates to zero-to-60 sprinting in 2.9 seconds and a flat-out top speed claimed to be in the region of 273 mph. In the words of those other Swedish legends, ABBA, “Mamma Mia!”

Great Dane ZENVO ST1 50S The nightmare for any supercar owner is to roll up to the valet stand and find there’s an identical model right in front. That’s not going to happen if you sign on the dotted line for a $1.8 million Zenvo ST1. The teeny Danish car maker plans to produce a mere 15 of its 1,104-horsepower two-seaters for the world’s mega rich, and only three will end up in the United States. Why buy a Zenvo when you could buy a Bugatti Veyron? One word: exclusivity. If you have money to burn, chances are you want something no one else has. And it’s the exclusivity and low, low production that supposedly justify the car’s sky-high sticker price. Not that there’s a lack of sophistication here. The car’s chassis is a racecar-like space frame of welded steel tubing clad with carbon-fiber panels. Its monster supercharged and turbocharged V-8, built in-house at Zenvo, is a 16-valve 7-liter not too dissimilar to the motor used in Chevy’s ZR1 Corvette. But boy, does it fly. The big V-8 cranks out a massive 1,104 horsepower and 1,053 pound-feet of torque, lunging the featherweight 3,000-pound ST1 from rest to 60 mph in fewer than three seconds, to 120 mph in fewer than nine and on to a claimed top speed of 230 mph. No longer is Hamlet the most fearsome Dane.

Bella Macchina FERRARI F12 Berlinetta This beast is a beauty. While supercars can often look like the manic creation of a five-year-old with an Etch A Sketch, here is absolute automotive gorgeousness in the jaw-dropping shape of the new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Every curve, every crease, every brushstroke is a joy to behold. And then, when you’re about to get all poetic about its style, you fire it up. Yowza. Nestled beneath that sculpted hood is a new 6.3-liter, naturally aspirated V-12 that conjures up an almighty 730 horsepower and 509 pound-feet of tire-frying torque. Here is the most powerful, naturally aspirated series-production car on the planet, the most potent Ferrari road car ever built. Automotive nirvana is this megamotor hitting its 8,700 rpm redline. The scream, the howl, the roar,

the sheer wall of sound is enough to make a grown man, or woman, sob uncontrollably. All this power being transferred to the seven-speed dual-clutch rear transaxle translates into a three-second lunge to 60 from standstill and a top speed of 212 mph. There’s no firm price tag on the F12, but we’re reckoning around $330,000 when it lands in the United States for consumers in the spring—although we did get a look at the first ever sold throughout the world at the Naples Winter Wine Festival auction in January, where it fetched $750,000.

LAMBORGHINI Aventador LP 700-4 Always dreamed of flying a fighter jet but are afraid of heights? Here’s your dream come true: Lamborghini’s new Aventador. This 700-horse V-12-engined projectile is nothing less than a road-going attack fighter. You even start it by flipping up a red plastic flap with your thumb and pressing the start button, just as if you were strafing the enemy. This replacement for the brutal Murciélago delivers even greater levels of performance and handling. Pedal to the metal and with all-wheel drive delivering power to the blacktop, the Aventador will explode off the line to 60 mph in a mere 2.8 seconds, cover the quarter-mile in 10.6 and not quit till it’s low-level flying at 217 mph. Motivation comes from an all-new, super-lightweight 6.5-liter V-12 that is deliriously happy to scream all the way to its 8,250 rpm redline. It’s coupled to a seven-speed automated manual that can shift gears in a blink-of-an-eye 50 milliseconds. But it’s the way the Aventador handles itself at the limit that really sets it apart from its predecessor. Compared to the Murciélago, the new carbon-fiber chassis is some 150 percent stiffer, its suspension design and traction control systems way more sophisticated. If you can’t quite stretch to a Bugatti Veyron, this new Aventador runs a close second.

Aiming to be the world’s fastest SSC Tuatara In 2007, a little company from West Richland, Washington, called Shelby SuperCars, set a Guinness World Record production car speed of 256.18 mph with its 1,183-horsepower Ultimate Aero, unseating the benchmark Bugatti Veyron. While Bugatti eventually grabbed back the record with its Veyron Super Sport, recording 258 mph, Shelby’s credentials as a bona fide supercar builder were established. Next year, Shelby SuperCars—now renamed SSC and no relation to car design legend Carroll Shelby—will introduce a new car that could well recapture the top-speed crown. Called the SSC Tuatara, it will pack a staggering 1,350 horsepower and have a targeted top speed of 276 mph. It’s powered by an SSC-designed and built 7-liter twin-turbo V-8 that reportedly will rev to an insane 9,200 rpm, blast from standstill to 60 mph in an unthinkable 2.5 seconds and run the quarter-mile in 9.75 seconds. While the Ultimate Aero always looked a little “kit car-ish,” the Tuatara has been shaped by talented designer Jason Castriota, who has done terrific work at Pininfarina and Bertone. The plan is for the first SSC Tuataras to be delivered early this year, and while there’s no firm pricing yet, expect something over $700,000. All we can say is: Bugatti, beware.

POWERFUL DETAILS Engine: 7-liter twin turbo V-8 Power: 1,350 horsepower at 9,200 rpm Torque: 1,042 pound-feet at 6,800 rpm Transmission: 7-speed manual 0-60: 2.5 seconds Top speed: 276 mph (estimated) Price: $700,000 (estimated)

All gone in sixty seconds ASTON MARTIN One-77 Before you ask: No, you can’t buy one. Well, at least not from the factory. But when everything these days has a price, if you make the right call to the right man and with the right wire transfer, you might just acquire one of the 77 Aston Martin One-77 supercars. If that fails, try eBay. What $1.8 million would buy you is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cars ever created. Think of an original Aston Vanquish on steroids, from its air-gulping grille to its vast blistered wheel arches to the gorgeous sweep of its roofline. And this is all about old-school, low-tech brute force. Under the hood is a massive, naturally aspirated 7.3-liter V-12 cranking out a staggering 750 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Delivering all this grunt to the rear wheels—no fancy all-wheel drive here—is a positively retro six-speed, single-clutch automated manual. Dial up 4,000 rpm on the tach, foot off the brake and the One-77 will lunge to 60 in 3.5 seconds and continue delivering its tsunami of torque all the way past 200 mph. That’s probably the speed at which the Aston’s price will soar over the next decade. Talk about a terrific investment. 122  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Cool Britannia MCLAREN 12C Spider Has it really been three years since McLaren pulled the wraps off its coupe-bodied MP4 12C? My, how time flies. But it’s time for the Brit supercar maker to deliver what its buyers really want: a droptop convertible version. The delicious 12C Spider—McLaren seems to have thankfully dropped the MP4 bit—costs an extra $23,950 over the coupe, taking the price to $265,750. Nevertheless, this newcomer is expected to account for well over 80 percent of 12C sales. At the punch of a button, the electrically folding two-piece hardtop can be levitated or lowered in just 17 seconds and at speeds up to 19 mph. Top down is all the better for hearing the car’s screaming 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8. And what an engine. For 2013, it received a welcome power hike, conjuring up an extra 24 horsepower to bring the tally up to 616 horsepower with max torque right at 442 pound-feet. Now when you bury the accelerator, 60 mph comes up from standstill in 3.1 seconds, while flat out it’ll run to 204 mph. But where the McLaren sets itself apart from the competition is in the truly phenomenal way it handles itself at the limit. Many high-powered go-karts don’t feel this agile. It may not look as pretty or feel as special as a Ferrari 458 Italia, but as a driver’s car, it’s second to none. u

Collins & DuPont Interior Design Q: What is your design inspiration? A: I find inspiration in many places throughout my everyday travels and work schedule. I’m inspired by Mother Nature and sometimes in the architecture around me. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: I see a trend towards more comfortable living. There are not as many spaces that are just for show or “off limits,” like the formal living room. People want their family and guests to feel comfortable in knowing they can relax in the home and not have to be careful all the time. Also, we are using more outdoor fabrics in breakfast nooks and other interior spaces where people want a more durable fabric.

Q: What is your area of specialization? A: Luxury residential design. While I focus on all aspects of the entire interior design process, I especially enjoy draperies and tile design.

Kreiss featuring Interiors by Design West Q: What is your design inspiration? A: For me, design is inspired by three key factors. One is the fashion industry; textiles, color and fashion trends lead to interior design trends. The second is nature, where I find harmony, symmetry, color, balance, scale and proportion. Finally, I have a passion for travel, from Manhattan to Malibu, from Paris to Milan. Europe is the cutting-edge source of design trends, but the more exposure you get to different customs and countries, the deeper your creative well. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Design is definitely transitioning into a cleaner look and feel. Backgrounds are becoming much lighter and more neutral, using layers of texture. A punch of color comes with accessories, pillows, area rugs and art. Bringing in nature and incorporating outdoor living is very important. Bigger outdoor kitchens, patios and outdoor luxury items

will continue to be the rage. There are different color palettes for different personalities. That’s why it is essential to conduct a design profile with every client. Personalization of the homeowners own style is key, allowing the space to reflect their personality, history and experiences. Q: What is your area of specialization? A: We specialize in high-end residential interior design, furniture, model merchandizing, custom cabinetry, accessories and installation. From the concept stage through the building process, we provide turnkey design and project management. We have designers with varying styles, and collaborating allows us to achieve award-winning results. This approach leads to creative solutions in tune with each client’s desires. Cindy Christensen Home Design Q: What is your design inspiration? A: The inspiration for my designs comes from nature in every form—movement, colors, patterns and shapes. I also find inspiration in every client’s personal collections. Refining and applying these influences to reflect the desires and design aesthetics of my clients is the essence of great design. Accurately interpreting their unique lifestyles and personal visions allows me to create designs that elicit a sense of warmth, joy, pleasure and satisfaction, all of which are priceless. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A. Interiors that resonate in today’s market offer classic simplicity with a clean, refreshing look that is dramatic yet practical. Open spaces that exude elegance, style and relaxed comfort are preferred over the more formal spaces of the past. In today’s

world, that’s the hallmark of great design—clean, uncluttered lines; elegance sourced in simplicity; and a sense of comfort that acknowledges a home is meant to be lived in, not to simply function as a showpiece. Q: What is your area of specialization? With nearly three decades of award-winning design experience, Cindy Christensen is one of Southwest Florida’s most accomplished interior designers. While a heralded and widely sought-after designer in Chicago, she created the concept of custom home makeovers that refresh, revitalize and rejuvenate luxury residences.

Listen to YouR Heart Spring, the season of renewal, is the perfect time to make lifestyle changes, and walking is a simple and no-fail way to reduce your risk of heart disease. Often a lethal threat, heart-related illnesses account for more than 600,000 deaths in the United States every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—but you can take a proactive stance by forming a walking routine. If you prefer companionship, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida hosts free weekly beachside nature walks through April (conservancy.org). The Florida Trail Association (floridatrail.org) also organizes walks and maintains a network of hiking trails. To search for walking paths in the Naples area or forge your own ranging from easy to moderate, see the American Heart Association’s startwalkingnow.org.

Posed to Mix and Mingle Co-ed yoga set to rocking beats brings together singles for fitness and fun. By Ashley Huntsberry-Lett If you’re looking for a date, but want to ensure you’ll meet Neapolitans who are focused on maintaining a balanced lifestyle, Bija Yoga owner Jamie Shane has developed a new event at her studio where single yogis can come together for class and then socialize at popular hot spots afterwards. “A friend of mine said, ‘Hey, you’re single. Lots of people are single. You should throw a singles’ party.’ So I did,” Shane says. For only $10, guests enjoy a 90-minute yoga session open to all skill levels while listening to live, funky music from DJ Shawn Smith. Participants have then gotten to know one another after class at various downtown locations that change according to performances and events. The next meet is scheduled for March 9. Shane mentions, “We need yoga dudes!” These meets are a fabulous way for active, likeminded people to network and forge deeper connections with each other. Choosing what you breathe can have a significant effect on your health, which is why Naples residents are now skipping the beach and flocking to the Salt Cave (saltcave.us) on Tamiami Trail to get their dose of salty air. Once inside, visitors lounge in chairs or on benches and focus on the purity of their deep breaths. With the ceiling, floor and walls lined with fine-crystal salt and a salt generator that releases salt particles into the air, this room simulates the healing environment of a natural salt cave in Eastern Europe. As visitors inhale, the micro particles of salt travel through the body’s airways, destroying bacteria, absorbing fluid to reduce inflammation and widening the respiratory tract for facilitating sinus drainage. This all-natural healing process, called halotherapy, is especially beneficial for those who suffer from allergies, asthma, bronchitis, sinus infections, ear infections, emphysema and even snoring. The exposure to crystal salt particles also calms the nervous system to help visitors relax while eliminating toxins to improve the look and feel of skin. In addition to halotherapy sessions, the Salt Cave offers a variety of other services, too, like salt scrubs for gentle exfoliation, relaxing mineral body wraps and polarized light therapy to help ameliorate acne.

» App for That Already a good eater but get tripped up when reading labels at the grocery store? Wish you could rub a bronzed lamp and out would pop a genie to grant you a nutritionist to guide you through the aisle minefield? With Fooducate (fooducate .com), that expert resides in your smartphone. Scan any barcode, and Fooducate reveals all the details about a product the manufacturer might not want you to notice, such as high levels of sugar, additives and preservatives. Based on its contents, each product is graded on a scale of A to D. You can also compare packaged goods, allowing you to make ideal choices when it comes to your diet. Now that’s something worth wishing for. —Mary Gibble

On a Mission to Remission The latest science blazes a trail for people to reverse the effects of Type 2 diabetes. More than 25 million Americans live with diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While complete remission of Type 2 diabetes is rare, a new study completed by the CDC and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that with changes in diet and exercise, patients can see partial remission. Participants decreased daily caloric intake to between 1,200 and 1,800 calories a day and increased physical activity to around three hours per week. With these adjustments, 11.5 percent of patients saw blood sugar levels dip back to a normal pre-diabetes level after one year. Though modest, these results illustrate a correlation between mindful living and diabetes remission, and suggest there may be scientific back-up to the old adage “You are what you eat.” —M.G.

GIVING BACK

You always want to leave things better than you found them. We have always sought to do that in York and want to do the same thing in Naples.

—Tighe King

miles of generosity By Christina Wells

Lifelong residents of York, Pennsylvania, Kathy and Tighe King have been part-time Neapolitans since 1995. Hugely committed to philanthropic tradition up north, the couple is duplicating its winning formula in Naples. Kathy, a former educator, serves as board vice chair for the Humane Society Naples. She chaired the organization’s 2011 gala and co-chaired the 2012 event (the 2013 event is being held this month). Her work parallels her interests in York, where she hosts local television’s Meet the Pets, a show dedicated to finding homes for sheltered animals. She serves as chair of the board for the York County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and is former chair for York Day Nursery. Kathy is also a former board member for Leg Up Farm, a group that assists special-needs children. “While we’re only here part-time, we still want to contribute to this community,” she says. “Everyone has something they can give that will make things better in some way.” Tighe is CEO and chairman for Perform Group LLC, which makes dance and gymnastics apparel. In York, he was past chairman of the board for the Chamber of Commerce, co-founder of the Labor Management Council, and chairman of the board for Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center, the Economic Development Council, the Cultural Alliance of York County and York Hospital. Tighe co-chaired the Team Pennsylvania Foundation with Governors Ridge, Schweiker and Rendell. He was also appointed by Governor Corbett to the Manufacturing Advisory Council.
