DAVIDOFF STUDIOS
Clockwise from above: Ron Woods at the Palm Beach Illustrated offices, circa 1991; Ron poses with local youth during one of his holiday parties; distributing presents to children in need was a special privilege for Ron.

Once in a while, it’s fun to walk down memory lane. You never know what gems you will unearth or what moments you will relive—particularly when you are looking through old magazines, which freeze-frame the past in such amusing, revealing vignettes. I was recently looking through old issues of Palm Beach Illustrated and zeroed in on Fall 1991. After snickering at the society photos (who were the Geminis?), I read “From the Publisher” by Ronald J. Woods, who had just acquired the magazine. (Nearly seven years later he would launch Naples Illustrated.) In his letter to readers, Ron referred to his nascent publishing company as “a sleeping giant.” He credited diversification for the company’s growth in an industry that was struggling at the time. “This is a growth market,” he wrote, “and [our] products are almost exclusively directed at an affluent audience, which feels the effects of the recession less than other segments of society.” A year after his passing, Ron’s words from 23 years ago still ring true, and his desire to push boundaries and grow, even in challenging times, is as relevant as ever. The vision he set in the early 1990s—to give readers strikingly illustrated content, compelling advertising messages and unyielding production values—is a mantra for our executive team and every one of our employees. And that accounts for our steady, constant growth, which was Ron’s goal all along. But he wanted more than that for his company. A self-made man who believed wealth was meant to be shared to bolster people and communities, Ron was one of the most genuinely philanthropic people I

have ever known. He didn’t just cut checks—though he certainly did that; he also became personally involved. Every Christmas, he planned a special day for underprivileged youth and was there from start to finish, connecting with the children and even serving them lunch. In Montana, he started a high school for troubled teens, every one of whom he knew by name. He wanted these children to have the chance no one else would give them. Ron’s legacy in giving continues through his private foundation and now through the magazines. Last year, for the first time, we instituted a new charitable program at Naples Illustrated that enabled us to contribute in meaningful ways. The magazines Ron built and so dearly loved have become an instrument to give back to the communities that have so heartily embraced them. I cannot think of a better tribute. The mark of true character is in how an individual is remembered. At Ron’s memorial, friends and even acquaintances echoed the same sentiment: “He was my best friend.” That spoke volumes. Aside from supporting the less fortunate, Ron treated everyone, from business titans to the man on the street, with the same respect and kindness. As editorial director, I think I speak for everyone leading our magazines forward when I say I am proud to uphold those values. Ron was a shining example to all of us; he was, well, our best friend. And even though he is no longer with us, his legacy continues to enrich these pages, our people and our communities. In the spirit of the great cowboys, we ride on. «

CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION
ROLAND SCARPA
The May/June issue is one that is eagerly anticipated by our readers each year. It includes a colorful pictorial summation of a season chock-full of charity events, new business openings (always a good sign) and recognition celebrations. Many charities have reported record-breaking fundraising at this season’s events, and the local business districts are boasting that they have no more open retail spaces. This is a far cry from just a few years ago, when many of the newly built retail spaces stood empty. I too enjoy going through the pictures in this edition and reliving the season! This review reminds me why I am so tired. No doubt about it: Our residents and visitors like to celebrate! May is also a time to celebrate mothers. It’s a shame that with all that our moms do for us that there is only one day a year dedicated to them. I am blessed that my mother is still very much a part of my everyday life, always on call—a role, like fatherhood, that has no completion date. She set wonderful examples of how to surpass expectations and fully succeed in all aspects of love and life while continually instilling humility: How to hold your head high even if you struck out in baseball, or didn’t get selected for cheerleading (obviously still a sore subject!). And to never lose the drive and determination it takes to achieve happimy mom: ness and personal fulfillment. How to love and how to surmarjorie vive a broken heart. How to stay true to your beliefs when boling someone tries to take you down a different path. There is no rulebook, and each and every mother has her own way of doing things with many lessons learned along the way. As a mother myself, I now understand how difficult and rewarding it can be, but it is by far the best job I have ever had! Thank you, Mom!

From the Editor
One of the curious things about memories is that when we try to remember full days or special events, we’re often overpowered by just one or two powerful moments that we return to in our minds—the ones that make us smile over and over again. As we pause to look back on this whirlwind of a season, you may be thinking there are so many of those moments you wish you could revisit, but it’s so hard to keep track of them all. Luckily, you don’t have to. We’ve done all the digging for you, sorting through hundreds upon hundreds of photos from myriad events this season to pick the most “Memorable Moments,” which start on page 52. Fashionistas can go straight to page 60 for a “Fashion Flashback” filled with bold colors showcased by stylish women (and men), along with a roundup of posh pooches who often stole the show. With two major food and wine festivals on the Paradise Coast, the foodie community was also out in full force. You can savor those moments once again—just “Raise a Glass” and turn to page 64. Of course, nearly every event during the social season has a charitable bent, often including luxury auction lots so enticing that bidding wars ensue, resulting in millions raised for local charities. In this issue, we shine a spotlight on some of the most fascinating auction lots. Revisit the paddle-up excitement starting on page 66 when you see what was “Sold!” And if you’re looking for a gloriously unique vacation, don’t miss “The High Life,” starting on page 45. We take you inside one of the most exquisite luxury treehouses at Chewton Glen, nestled amid the Hampshire countryside in England. Whatever your summer plans, let’s all vow to celebrate every single moment. With Mother’s Day around the corner, I'll be doing just that with my mom—as family time always makes for the most memorable moments.

Kevin Mahogany
Cool Cat Kansas City, Missouri-born baritone Kevin Mahogany has recorded and performed alongside jazz and blues legends, including T.S. Monk, Marlena Shaw and Al Jarreau. He has recorded multiple CDs of his own since his debut, Double Rainbow, in 1993. On May 8, the versatile singer and former teacher at the College of Music in Boston and the University of Miami will thrill Neapolitans with his powerfully rich vocals and broad stylistic range covering ballads, bop, blues and jazz. The critically acclaimed master of scat headlines the annual Alive in the World concert and auction at Artis—Naples to benefit the Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled. —Kat Smith
MILA BRIDGER
NI: What musical projects are you working on? KM: I’m releasing a new CD. It’s a few tunes that were recorded live in Kansas City with some incredible musicians who were put together for a concert, and I am recording a newer project in May, a second album of love songs and ballads. Who inspired you in pursuing your passion? As far as musical influence, it was the Motown period when I was born and grew up, and I enjoyed that music. But the largest influence was my mother. She was not a musician but believed strongly in the arts as part of a well-rounded education. What recordings are on your personal playlist right now? I have a few thousand recordings on my playlist, from Aaron Copland in classical to Johnny Cash in country, plus jazz, funk, pop, R&B. I listen to a variety of styles ... as well as international recordings from Europe, Russia and Africa. What are your thoughts on doing this benefit concert in Naples? I am always interested in supporting organizations that offer assistance to those who have problems helping themselves.

Gigs for good The Alive in the World concert is presented by the Trust for the Advancement of Responsible Artists (gigforgood.org), founded by Naples attorney Robert Goldman. The shows benefit a charity while shining a spotlight on outstanding musical artists. This year’s concert will raise funds to support the Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled (fddswfl.org), whose mission is to ensure that those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families have the support they need to be full members of our community. Beyond Beauty Nearly two years after launching her beauty collection, the granddaughter of the legendary Estée Lauder has expanded her lifestyle brand AERIN to include more than a half-dozen categories. “It has been quite a journey and it’s a very extensive line of products, but when you see it all together, it’s very cohesive,” says Aerin Lauder, founder and creative director of her namesake brand, which now includes lighting, furniture, fabrics, carpets, home decor, shoes, sunglasses and even jewelry. “For example, when we go to the beach for summer, and [show] a sense of beauty, we also apply those trends to home objects like shells or furniture finishes like shagreen.” Earlier this year, Lauder visited Clive Daniel Home in Naples to share her new AERIN furniture collection for E.J. Victor and her lighting collection for Visual Comfort & Co. In an interview, Lauder shares insight into her brand and offers her best home decor advice as we head into summer. —Teri Evans Common thread: Gold is the color that is very much a part of the brand—and a part of me. So within every collection there’s always something gold, whether it be makeup or jewelry or even home items with a gold thread through them. Seasonal makeover advice: Pillows are a great way to update a room. Even just changing the slipcover can create a new feeling. You can also change plants and flowers to mark the start of each new season. Candles can make a difference, too. For example, a summery scented candle can immediately transport you to the beach and then you can switch to a cozy, spicy one for winter. Three things few people know about her: I have two teenage boys and I’m such a girl that I don’t think a day goes by when I don’t go into their
32
room and see their piles of clothes on the floor— and just have to pick it all up! I’m also an awful sleeper. I never sleep. And I love candy. Swedish fish are a favorite. What’s next: We launched a book, Beauty At Home, which is keeping us very busy. It tells the story of Estée Lauder—an incredible woman, my mentor and my grandmother. And we’re starting to create the next round of collections with our partners, whether it’s home, lighting, furniture, fabrics. We have a whole next chapter in all those categories. Grand vision: It’s a lifestyle brand focused on style and luxury. It’s not about hundreds of different products. It’s an edited, focused collection across categories, whether it is 20 different light fixtures to pick from or 30 different fabrics.

Tragedy to Triumph
Car enthusiasts have a new place to revel in their favorite pastime. The Revs Institute for Automotive Research opened this spring in Naples, offering tours of the Collier Collection. There are more than 100 vintage, classic and racing cars on display, dating back to 1896. The institute also contains an extensive library with archival photos, historic engineering documents, automobile ads and more. It’s a rebirth of sorts for Revs, which was originally known as the Collier Automotive Museum when it closed in 1994. Revs is open for tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, though tickets must be reserved in advance. (revsinstitute.org, 239-687-7387) —T.E.

Debonair Derby Attire
An accomplished swimmer at Marshall University, Naples native Katie Kramer is making waves in and out of the pool. Last Memorial Day weekend, Kramer was riding her bike to the Greater Naples YMCA to swim when a car struck her and left her with a badly broken ankle. Turning tragedy into triumph, she returned to the YMCA to start physical therapy and get on the road to fast recovery. A year later, she is hard at work, training to swim the Straight of Gibraltar in an impressive fundraising feat in mid May to support the refurbishing of the pool at the Naples YMCA. “I’m not doing the swim just for fun, I’m doing this to give back to the Y for helping me during my recovery, and to promote the sport of swimming,” says Kramer. “I want to encourage kids to join the sport I fell in love with.” —J.B.
Ready to celebrate the Run for the Roses in style? Joseph Wendt Custom Clothiers in downtown Naples has joined forces with iconic hat designer Christine A. Moore Millinery to create a collection of custom-made hats for this month’s Kentucky Derby. For gents and ladies who want complementary Derby looks, Wendt and Moore work with customers to match hats with their ensembles. When it comes to choosing a look to show off at the race itself at Churchill Downs, Wendt’s motto is “go big or go home.” Ultimately, though, he advises all partygoers to let their personality be their guide when selecting the best Derby topper— and the duo is happy to help design any hat to match your personality, along with a custom outfit. Dream of escaping city life and defecting into the woods? The bucolic yet luxurious Treehouses at Chewton Glen may be just the ticket.
Escape
The HIGH Life By Daphne Nikolopoulos
Sitting in a hot tub on a broad terrace jutting out across a canopy of trees, sipping a gin-tonic and listening to the wind whistle through the leaves as the sun begins its descent on the western horizon brings to mind images of a South American cloud forest or the riverine thickets of Africa. But South East England? Not so much. Yet that is exactly where this rustic scene is unfolding. In the Hampshire countryside near the Dorset coast, the well-known
045-ESCAPE-0514.indd 45
country house hotel Chewton Glen has introduced a new luxury offering that is unmatched in the region: a series of tree houses tucked at the edge of the New Forest (thenewforest.co.uk). The Treehouses at Chewton Glen (chewtonglen.com) don’t look or feel anything like the hotel or its adjacent destination spa. Diametrically opposed to the brick façade and classical architecture of Chewton Glen, the tree houses are elevated versions of a childhood

favorite, crafted of natural materials to harmonize with the natural surroundings. The wood-clad, copper-roofed structures are accessible on foot (or via golf cart) from a path leading from the main house into the forest. On an autumn day, the ground is moist

and covered with a layer of fallen leaves, adding to the into-the-woods experience. As the path rises above the forest and leads to a clearing, the tree houses emerge from the branches as if they’ve always been there. A planked gangway connects terra firma with the structure. Walk across it, and you feel like you’re crossing into another realm, a secret hideaway of sorts. You half expect a rustic, Swiss-Family-Robinson-esque interior on the other side of the door. In fact, it isn’t that way at all. These tree houses are actually quite luxurious, with open spaces, floor-toceiling windows, soaking tubs surrounded by glass and timber terraces with all-glass railings, hot tubs and seating areas. Because they are situated in the midst of nature—they float above the forest floor, communing with the tree canopy—the decor is appropriately rustic with a modern edge: suiting fabrics and velvets on contemporary seating, a wood log cocktail table bound by iron

straps and topped with glass, wood-burning stoves next to Sonos music systems and iPod docks, and timber and heated marble floors. The view of, and access to, the forest is perhaps the most compelling reason to put the Treehouses on the “must” list. The New Forest is a magical place where bluebells bloom in the spring and leaves turn a kaleidoscope of colors in the fall, where deer roam and birds flitter among the beech and oak branches. The Treehouses are tucked in a secluded spot within the forest but also are ideally located for exploration. There are a few trails, though adventurous guests have been known to make their own paths through the thicket. Either way, the smell of the earth after a light rain, or the cool wind sweeping across a clearing, or the song of the woodlark makes the place feel like something out of a fairy tale. A 45-minute amble (the British don’t walk; they amble) through the woods leads to the windswept coastline of east Dorset with its pebble beaches and paved paths for pedestrians or cyclists. It’s even better to do this with a personal trainer, who may be hired through the spa at Chewton Glen. Be warned:
The dreamy spa at Chewton Glen
The trainers are all about getting your heart rate up, so this is no leisurely stroll. For leisure, stick closer to the spa, which offers a unique program for Treehouse guests: Treetox, or Detox in the Trees. The four-night health break, designed to pull guests away from their busy lives and into nature, involves holistic and detox treatments, along with light exercise and sessions with a “head therapist.” Meant to balance emotions, the latter is a mix of positive affirmations and acupressure—a mind-body connection, if you want. Or, you can skip the detox and indulge

in a little culinary therapy. Chewton Glen’s Vetiver restaurant, located in a conservatory at the main house, is a hidden gem within the Hampshire countryside. Chef Luke Matthews uses locally raised meat (Dorset veal), game (New Forest venison), fish (Cornish sea bass) and produce (from the hotel’s kitchen garden) to create classic dishes with an innovative spin, reinforcing the classicmodern tension throughout Chewton Glen. But the best dining experience of all
comes in a box. A huge hamper full of morning treats, from house-made granola to pressed juices, is delivered to each tree house in the morning. That, and the persistent birdsong from the canopy, is a beautiful way to welcome the day. «

Audi’s breathtaking 560-hp RS7 delivers supercar performance with daily-driving versatility By Howard Walker
Remember the ’70s? Back then, if you were a testosteronecharged teen, chances are you had a poster of a Lamborghini Countach supercar pinned to your bedroom wall. The original Countach was everybody’s dream machine. It had origami styling, a screaming 12-cylinder engine and bat-out-ofhell performance. The only problem was one of entry and exit. Getting in and out of a hip-high Countach was best attempted only after a consultation with your chiropractor. And once settled in the skinny seats, you were not extracting yourself anytime soon. Fast-forward 40 years, and while today’s supercars provide unparalleled driving thrills, they’re generally still a pain in the back. Which is why the new genre of practical supercars, like Audi’s breathtaking RS7, has so much appeal. Here is a car with a weapons-grade, twin-turbocharged, 4-liter V-8 cranking out 560 hp, which is 185 hp more than the old Countach. Pedal to the metal, it can scythe from standstill to 60 in an insane 3.7 seconds. That’s almost two seconds faster than the Lambo. Yet this sport-back Audi also offers stretch-out seating for four,
a quartet of doors, superb leather upholstery and a trunk beneath the liftback that could double as a PODS storage unit. Sure, the RS7 lacks a certain exclusivity, being based on Audi’s high-volume A7 sedan. But this $104,900 projectile orbits in a whole other stratosphere. It’s honed and developed by Audi’s in-house performance meisters in Quattro GmbH, which acts like Mercedes’ AMG division. Its design treads between road racer and unassuming stealth machine. While aficionados will zero in on the bulging fenders, ground-scraping front spoiler, pop-up rear wing and 21-inch rims, others will see it as simply one heck of a cool car. There is nothing like the RS7’s twin-turbo V-8. It is a masterpiece of automotive technology, capable of delivering 516 pound-feet of torque from just 1,750 rpm.

Squeeze the throttle from low speed, and the car erupts with a tsunami of torque, catapulting past slower traffic or blasting from an on-ramp into fast-moving traffic. Then there’s the noise. The optional sport exhaust, with its pair of huge, ovoid tailpipes, delivers a wall of primordial snarling, crackling and bellowing. Linda Blair in The Exorcist didn’t have this many demonic voices. And boy, this 4,500-pound monster can carve curves. The magical combination of Quattro all-wheel drive—which can channel as much as 85 percent of power to the 21-inch rear wheels—and laser-precise electric-assist steering makes the RS7 feel alive. Inside, there’s all the style and opulence befitting a $100,000 sports-luxury sedan. We love the honeycomb-paneled leather seats, the black wood and aluminum inlays and the optional, ear-bleeding Bang & Olufsen audio—a deal at $5,900. Maybe it’s a sign of maturing, but it sure is fun driving a twoseat supercar without having to be a contortionist to clamber in and out. Practical magic, indeed. «

Naples-area nonprofits host a slew of soirees with auctions and raffles that raise an astounding amount of money to support our neighbors in need and enrich our community. We revisit some one-of-a-kind and luxurious prizes—from an adventurous trip to Everest to a trove of sparkling jewels won during the social season. We also spotlight four Paradise Coast jewelers who donated pieces to a spectrum of worthy causes. By Kat Smith NAPLES CHILDREN & EDUCATION FOUNDATION EVENT: The Naples Winter Wine Festival AUCTION HIGHLIGHT: Mount Everest Base Camp Adventure As the most successful wine charity auction in the country, this year’s festival offered more of the unique experiences and adventures of a lifetime it is famous for. This lot is a 21-day trek to Everest Base Camp, accompanying American climber Troy Hanson and the Everest climbing team, along with a native Sherpa staff who will help carry gear and cook meals during the rigorous hike. The journey follows the original Everest climbing expedition route, and allows time to get acquainted with the traditional Sherpa villages, people and culture. The adventure is peaked with a visit to the legendary Khumbu Icefall and a night or two at Everest Base Camp—then ends when the official climbing

team continues the death-defying hike all the way to the summit. WINNING BID: $70,000 HOW FUNDS HELP: The Naples Winter Wine Festival is a fundraising event for the Naples Children & Education Foundation, which supports 37 children’s charities in Collier County. The festival has raised $123 million since 2001, while NCEF has committed a total of $24 million to children’s initiatives covering health care, education, hunger and more.

HOW FUNDS HELP: The annual event supports the Conservancy’s mission of protecting Southwest Florida’s unique natural resources— water, land, wildlife and the future. The theme was “Fund-the-Future” and focused on education initiatives related to science, technology, engineering and math for the nearly 10,000 schoolchildren as well as adults whom the Conservancy serves each year.

The vacation can be arranged to suit the visitors’ tastes, offering watersports from fishing to waterskiing, as well as golf and lunch at the Westmoor Country Club and Chenequa Country Club. Hearts of Gold
When charities are asked about their most successful auction lots or prizes, the answer is frequently a piece of exquisite jewelry. Local designers and purveyors are a giving group. Meet four of the Naples community’s generous gems. AMANDA JARON | A.JARON FINE JEWELRY
LANE WILKINSON
While recently in the spotlight for launching the Glitter Foundation in February, a nonprofit that aims to help children through art therapy and education, Amanda Jaron has deep roots in charitable causes. Early in her career at Avon, she crafted an annual breast cancer awareness piece, as well as the company’s Heart of America pin, which raised $7 million to support the victims’ families from the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The pace of her charitable efforts has only increased since she set up shop in Naples in 2004. Her early philanthropic efforts locally included Lucite Pink Ribbon Cuffs and Pink Rosebud pins to help the Cancer Alliance of Naples. Jaron makes them now in a rainbow of colors (left) to suit other charities. Jaron is trained as a goldsmith and known for fine jewelry, but many of her charity pieces are less than $100, allowing more people to give back. Since 2010, Jaron has produced 1,000-plus rings for PACE Center for Girls at a $99 price, “which means there are 1,000 people in Collier and Lee counties wearing a $99 ring who are on a mission to talk about PACE,” she says. Jaron also co-chaired the David Lawrence Center gala this year and created a pair of gold and diamond earrings for the event.
As a native of Naples, William Boyajian sees his hometown as one that cultivates community responsibility and continued camaraderie through heartfelt service. As jewelry designer and owner of Port Royal Jewelers, Boyajian has partnered over the years with numerous nonprofit organizations that speak to his heart. Every year he commits to designing exquisite jewelry for at least one organization in each of these charitable categories: children’s health; cancer; education for underprivileged families; animal shelter; environmental stewardship; endangered animal protection; the arts; and disaster relief. To decide what jewelry to design and donate to the selected nonprofits, Boyajian first works to understand each organization’s mission. He connects with the staff and board of directors, and then creates a one-of-a-kind design that represents the cause and serves as a memento of his heartfelt support. This year he partnered with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida (for which he created the stunning ring shown above), the Garden of Hope and Courage, Opera Naples, the Guadalupe Center and the Naples Players, among others. Looking ahead to next season, Boyajian says he will be working with 10 charities, and the Guadalupe Center has asked Port Royal Jewelers to be a sponsor for its event. “We all have the ability to make a difference to individuals or a group within our community,” Boyajian says. “The important thing is to inspire everyone to do the best that they can. My objective is not so much an amount to raise, but the ability to inspire through selflessness.”

GARY AND KATHY BIGHAM BIGHAM JEWELERS The Bighams approach philanthropy with a “make-it-happen” mind-set. Gary Bigham quietly devotes time and resources to many causes. He was featured as one of NI’s “2013 Super Men,” and has been honored by both Champions for Learning as a Man of Distinction and the local YMCA as Coach of the Year. Kathy has mentored and supported a teenage girl through the Guardian ad Litem Program for more than four years, and she leads the company’s annual Christmas gift collections for Youth Haven and The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. The couple encourages employees to volunteer, often on the company’s time. Their namesake jewelry company supported 34 area organizations in 2013 and 2014. Beneficiaries of Bigham Jewelers’ initiatives include medical facilities like Golisano Children’s Hospital and Naples Community Hospital; cultural institutions, such as Gulfshore Playhouse; children’s causes, including the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County and Bedtime Bundles; and educational institutions, such as Fun Time Early Childhood Academy. For Florida Gulf Coast University’s Athletics Department 2013 fundraiser the store donated an 18-karat white gold, sapphire and diamond bangle (pictured) and matching earrings, valued at $14,300. The store also hosts event and jewelry shopping experiences; purchases ads and tables for numerous events; and opens its conference room to nonprofits’ meetings. “Good business and good corporate citizenship are closely interlinked,” Kathy says.
DANNY GOVBERG | YAMRON JEWELERS Four generations of Govberg family jewelers instituted a culture of philanthropic support in the Philadelphia community where they have been in business since 1922. So when Danny Govberg, a part-time Neapolitan, took ownership of Yamron Jewelers in 2012, he made it his mission to continue the Naples store’s long-standing tradition of philanthropy in this area. Last year, he established the Yamron Jewelers Charitable Giving program. It began with a donation of 18 stunning rings by celebrated designer Marina B of Bulgari family fame, each valued at $11,000, to 18 organizations. Two styles of her Twin Ring were chosen, featuring 18-karat yellow and white gold with amethysts and either blue topaz or citrine stones. “I would be remiss to not discuss the significance of the number 18,” Govberg says. “In Hebrew, 18 is the numeric value of the letters of chai, which means life, a value at the core of this initiative.” A ring was added later for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, bringing the total to 19. The goal of donating the rings was to amp up excitement for the charities and raise significant dollars at each nonprofit’s major fundraiser. The program’s recipients represent a broad range of causes, from preserving nature (including Conservancy of Southwest Florida), to youth concerns (such as Boys & Girls Club of Collier County), to supporting the arts (including Naples Philharmonic League). Health-care nonprofits also benefited; in March, the Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Inc.’s raffle for the Marina B ring raised $10,000. The inaugural year of the Yamron Charitable Giving Program was a big success, Govberg says, adding, “We are looking forward to building upon this foundation throughout the coming year.” —K.S.

Sébastien Thieffine’s passion for pastry is a unique blend of laser-like precision and artistic whimsy. As executive pastry chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, Thieffine’s desserts are known for their stunning visual presentation and fantastic flavors. He draws on more than a quarter-century of experience in the pastry arts, starting with an apprenticeship in the pastry kitchens of Soissons and Reims, France, at the age of 15. But French-born Thieffine says his fascination with pastry began even earlier, as he likely inherited it from his grandparents, who loved to bake in his hometown of Braine, a small village in the Champagne region of France. In an interview, Thieffine shares how he stays inspired, a common mistake many home bakers make and a favorite indulgence. —Lauren Daniels
Chef Sébastien Thieffine Favorite ingredients: I cherish vanilla, chocolate and almonds. Although the desserts we serve at the restaurant are complex, elaborate displays, my favorite desserts are ones that make people happy. At home, it’s French crepes. I have been making them more and more because my two-year-old daughter loves them. Finding inspiration: The seasons are a great inspiration. I read a lot of pastry magazines from all over the world. Blogs are also good places to find inspiration. A lot of people are posting their creations. You just try to take everything and keep your eyes open. A taste of home: In my refrigerator, I have a “French section”—foods that I buy in France whenever I go back, mostly mustards and sauces that I can’t find here in the United States. Must-have tool: If my scale was not working, I couldn’t function. Precision in pastry is crucial; there is no going back and adding salt and pepper like in cooking. Being precise would resolve a lot of the issues people have with baking. But a dish won’t turn out well just because you read the recipe correctly; always taste before you serve. Guilty pleasure: I love ice cream. I have lots of ice cream and sorbet recipes. But I love “Scotchy Scotch Scotch” from Ben & Jerry’s, too. It’s so good! 84

Boom to Bust in Oz
Changing times have the Aussie wine business in a slump—but help is on the way By Mark SPivak
A 2010 bottle of Penfolds CabernetShiraz Bin 389, from Australia’s Treasury Wine Estates, sells for about $60 in America.
The Australian wine industry is undergoing a reversal of fortune. Less than a decade ago, Australian wine was one of the most popular beverages in North America. Bottles of old-vine Shiraz and Grenache routinely sold for $50 to $100, and collectors lined up for them. Allocations were tight in most parts of the United States, and the best Australian wines were regarded as trophies. It was a heady time Down Under, as the large producers experienced explosive growth and entrepreneurs rushed in to start their own boutique wineries. The boom resulted in a serious oversupply of Australian wine—a surplus of 100 million cases by 2009. Since then, things have gotten even worse. The global recession sharply reduced demand for wines more than $50, a category frequently referred to by retailers as “the dead zone.” At the same time, the strength of the Aus-
tralian dollar resulted in price increases across the board. This situation proved disastrous for lower-end wines, such as Yellow Tail, and exports plummeted. In the high-end category, the series of devastating wildfires in Victoria destroyed many of those new boutique wineries. Huge companies, such as Treasury Wine Estates (which controls brands such as Penfolds, Lindeman’s, Rosemount and Wolf Blass), have slashed prices by as much as 50 percent. As a result, many growers are having trouble selling their fruit. History buffs will recall similar events in the Australian wine industry have happened before. After five years of oversupply and low prices during the 1980s, the government was forced to take action. In 1987, Australia instituted a program known as The Great Vine Pull, in which growers were actually paid to rip up older vines and undesirable grape varieties. Unfortunately,
90 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
090-POUR-0514.indd 90
4/2/14 1:41 PM
this resulted in the removal of thousands of acres of priceless old Shiraz vines—and the loss of fruit that would have made wines commanding stunning prices during the next boom. As the worldwide economy improves, there are glimmers of hope. While the segments of the market more than $50 and less than $10 remain sluggish, most industry sources report improvement in sales in the $10-to-$15-per-bottle price range, a level where many consumers feel comfortable purchasing wine for daily drinking. There has been increased interest in the States (Australia’s second-largest export market after the United Kingdom) and China, which seems to be the salvation of large numbers of wine producers lately. At the highest levels, ironically, demand for the top wines remains intense. Chris Ringland Three Rivers Shiraz sells for at least $500 per bottle when you can find it, and perennial favorites such as Penfolds Grange and Shiraz from Henschke Hill of Grace Vineyard frequently cost more than that. However, these wines are anomalies. They are true collectibles, made in small quantities and
prized by some connoisseurs just as much as First Growth Bordeaux or Burgundy Grand Crus. Every indication shows help is on the way. The Australian government is getting involved in a more strategic manner than it did in 1987 through the Wine Australia Corp., a statutory body established with the goal of supporting the industry in export markets. At the same time, the Winemaker’s Federation of Australia has released an action plan that focuses on tax incentives, global competition and the thorny issue of supply and demand. The hope is these efforts will restore Australian wine to what it once was: an affordable indulgence, luscious and brimming with fruit, that makes a gracious addition to dinner tables worldwide. «
Barrels from the Audrey Wilkinson Vineyard, which spans 270 acres and is named for one of Australia’s earliest wine pioneers.

Splash Into Summer Taking a dip in the pool is a refreshing way to cool off during a summer scorcher, but the health benefits of swimming go beyond just burning a few extra calories. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, water-based exercise can even help alleviate joint pain for those who suffer from osteoarthritis, which affects about 50 million people. Neapolitans who want to put a fun spin on their swim can try an aqua Zumba class at the River Park Aquatic Center (danceyourself fitzumba.com) or yoga-infused water aerobics at the Greater Naples YMCA. Wheel Time When we were kids, bicycling brought us simple pleasure. As adults, though, we realize that cycling can bring tremendous fitness benefits, too. Biking offers a great cardio workout without jarring joints, while improving heart health. The Naples area offers multiple options to riders of all abilities. A good place to start is with Naples Velo, a cycling club as well as a racing team that offers 23 rides a week, five specifically for beginners. For example, on Tuesday mornings, bikers meet at Cambier Park on Eighth Street South for an easy trip at a leisurely 14- to 16-mph pace to Port Royal and back. The route is designed for novices and includes some basic skills training. Patrick Ruff, president of Naples Pathways Coalition (NPC), shares some tips for local cyclists, noting that roads west of U.S. 41 are good to help beginners get adjusted to biking, as the pace is slow. “Once you get past riding a beach cruiser for an hour and want a more competitive, stronger workout, check out the [more intermediate] local group rides offered at Naples Velo,” Ruff says. The club offers a scenic route on Sundays starting at the Marketplace at PeliWhen biking in the sizzling sun becomes too much to bear, pedal your way to Time Trial Cycle, an indoor cycling studio that recently opened in Naples. Caring Touch Most of us like to feel pampered and look our best, even when coping with illness. Treatments like facials can be tricky, though, for anyone undergoing chemo and other medical therapies. Locally, patients looking for specialized beauty treatments can turn to Susan Watts of Simply Faces (simplyfacesbeauty.com), a licensed oncology esthetician certified through Touch for Cancer. The international program instructs spa professionals in how to adjust treatments specifically for people undergoing cancer therapies, screen for cancerous skin lesions and bring cancer survivors’ skin back into balance. Watts provides facial treatments for healthy clients, but she divides her time to treat the health-challenged as well. She has worked with the American Cancer Society, Oncology Infusion Services, Susan G. Komen Foundation and other nonprofits. Knowing how many residents in the area are part-timers, Watts notes that patients who leave town can find a directory of other certified professionals around the country at touchforcanceronline Susan Watts .com. —Kat Smith
Manicure Makeover
As more cosmetic brands focus on natural ingredients, toxin-free nail polishes have exploded in popularity—including formulas designed especially for kids. Many traditional polishes have contained formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP)—chemicals and solvents used for longer-lasting manicures. In the last few years though, several water-based, toxin-free brands have emerged, such as Zoya, Butter London, RGB, Sheswai and LVX. Among the most popular is Zoya, which is widely available locally, including La Femme Perfumery, Purely You Spa and Salon Bamboo Aveda. And if your little one is nudging you to play with polish, try Piggy Paint—a fun, toxin-free and odorless brand created by a mom who wanted a safer polish for her young daughters. The company sells an acetone-free polish remover as well, though rubbing alcohol also sweeps it right off! You can find Piggy Paint in children’s shops around town, including The Little Merchant, Beth Moné Children’s Shoppe, Cottontails and EcoBaby & Home. —Ashley Huntsberry-Lett

Agenda
May Flowers Naples-based artist Carmelo Blandino takes a deeply meditative approach to his work, contemplating the subject matter until he discovers the true essence within. His recent paintings of single blooms are vibrantly colorful expressions of each subject. An exhibition of these works, titled “Suspended Dialogues,” will be displayed at the Thomas Riley Studio, Naples. The show opens with a reception May 2, and the evening will feature a talk with the artist. The exhibit will run through May 30. “We are going to be offering limited-edition prints at the show juxtaposed with some of his new textural and gestural work,” says Chad Jensen, the studio’s creative director. “Should be very interesting and beautiful.” (thomasrileystudio.com) —Kat Smith

Paddles in Paradise
Teams ready for last year’s canoe race
The thirty-eighth annual Great Dock Canoe Race is poised to paddle off May 10 in the waters surrounding Crayton Cove. This popular event entices local residents and visitors to celebrate on land, dock and bay. One of the perennial crowd favorites is a parade and contest of canoes decorated according to the theme, which this year is “Zombies in Paradise.” The various races are based on skill level, with winners recognized at an awards ceremony. While it is a fun day on the water, it also helps the community. Proceeds from the entry fees will benefit Drug Free Collier. (greatdockcanoe race.com) —Melina Velez

One Stride At A Time By brian Patrick Eha
Naples Equestrian Challenge will host its fourth annual Kentucky Derby party on May 3 at The Bay House in North Naples. The proceeds will benefit NEC’s therapeutic riding programs. (239-596-2988, naplesequestrianchallenge.org)
VANESSA ROGERS
W
When Connie Sharpe thinks of the impact that the Naples Equestrian Challenge—a therapeutic horseback-riding program for people with special needs—has on the community, she thinks of one girl who has participated in the program for nearly 10 years. When the girl was four years old, she needed a walker to cross the parking lot to the riding arena. Last year, she ran across that same lot. “It’s more than a pony ride,” says Sharpe, who serves on the NEC’s board of directors. “It’s therapy. And it’s so great to see the result of that therapy.” Volunteers on foot lead the participants on horseback, coaxing them with verbal instructions. The riding motion simulates a natural human stride, preparing the children physically and neurologically to move their own bodies. “It creates a muscle memory, you might say, that these muscles don’t have,” Sharpe says. The NEC helps 500 people a year, from kids with developmental disorders to wounded veterans and adults struggling with addiction. When the group decided to expand recently—adding more land, horses and volunteers—Connie and her husband, Gary, presented a $200,000 gift to make up for a funding shortfall. Their donation will allow the NEC to grow from about four to about six acres. The hope is that, with additional contributions, NEC will be able to build a new barn and a second riding arena. Ultimately, the nonprofit aims to become a training center for other therapeutic riding programs. The Sharpes, who bought a home in Naples in 2000, know intimately the benefits such a program might have. Connie grew up around horses on a farm in northwestern Ohio and learned to ride while still in grade school. After that, she worked as a nurse for more than 12 years, before co-founding a company with her husband selling specialized medical equipment. Even now, she still volunteers at the NEC three times a week. “I like helping people,” she says. “And I like seeing results.” «
