Each year, the “season” in Naples seems to start a bit earlier. It certainly appears we are steadily shifting to a more year-round season. Of course, part of that shift is a result of more young couples with school-aged children planting roots in the area— and they return to our little slice of paradise earlier than what’s been customary for the start of the school year. This month, we celebrate those youngsters heading back to class with our first-ever kids’ fashion feature. Turn to page 66; you won’t want to miss these Neapolitan children styled in backto-school cool. While September signals the official end of summer, thankfully our coastal town also offers endless beach days all year long. For those of us who cannot get enough of our sun, sand, and surf, head straight to page 58 for the ultimate A-to-Z guide to our local beaches. You’ll find the best spots for families and dogs, where to stroll the beach for sunset cocktails, prime areas to enjoy all types of water sports, and much more. This issue also marks our much-anticipated Super Men feature in which we highlight seven notable gents who have made their mark on our community in a variety of unique ways. It is our fifth annual celebration of community-minded and stylish gentlemen, and you can read their stories starting on page 44.
The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it. —Thucydides

Sweet September
There are many tasty reasons for foodies to celebrate this month. Not only is it National Honey Month, it’s also the beginning of mullet season. Pick up some of the sticky golden syrup, break out your fishing rod, and use the last of your summer mangoes to create this sweet and spicy dish courtesy of Chef Justin Timineri from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Ingredients (serves 4) b/e cup honey b/e cup rice wine vinegar 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard
Preheat grill to medium-hot. Combine all ingredients except fish fillets in a small bowl. Reserve 1/2 cup of sauce to serve with cooked fillets. Brush both sides of fillets with sauce and place in a single layer in a well-greased, hinged wire grill basket. Cook 5 to 8 minutes. Baste fillets with sauce and turn. Cook 5 to 8 minutes more or until fish flakes easily. Serve with reserved sauce and parsley garnish.

Q&A A NOVEL APPROACH
Naples resident Nathan Hill, an acclaimed short-story writer and English professor, just released his first novel, The Nix (Knopf, 2016). Its protagonist, Samuel Andresen-Anderson, is a professor and struggling writer. His mother, who abandoned him when he was a child, appears decades later in the news for committing a seemingly politically motivated crime—pelting the ultra-right-wing governor of Wyoming with a fistful of stones. The plot revolves around Samuel’s mission to uncover secrets of the past to find out who his mother really is and help her out of trouble. It’s an epic tale crisscrossing many decades. Even before its release, the book raked in glittering accolades from the likes of Kirkus and Publishers Weekly. It even elicited praise from the great author John Irving, who said it’s “a mother-son psychodrama with ghosts and politics, but it’s also a tragicomedy about anger and sanctimony in America.” Hill’s wife, Jenni, plays bassoon with the Naples Philharmonic. —Kat Smith

GIVING BACK:
Success Fostering
MICHAEL CARONCHI
By Brian Patrick Eha

Ron McGinty has worked with nearly two dozen kids in his four years as a guardian ad litem, but it was his conversation with one girl, a third-generation foster child, that convinced him to do more. Her mother had left home at 14 and had six kids, all of whom ended up in the foster-care system. “My passion went to the highest level” after working on her case, says McGinty, who in 2011 joined the board of directors for Youth Haven, a local nonprofit that provides shelter for abused, neglected, and homeless children. The Naples resident became interested in No Barriers USA, which sponsors an adventure-travel program designed to build confidence and leadership skills in inner-city youths. McGinty approached its co-founder, Eric Weihenmayer, known for his bravery as the only blind person to summit Mount Everest, about expanding the program to include foster kids in Southwest Florida. It was a demographic No Barriers had never served before. “I was hoping that a local organization would take this on as a project,” McGinty says. “But nobody wanted to touch it” because of how expensive it was. So McGinty left Youth Haven after a three-year term to work with Weihenmayer on the project. After three years of logistical and legal barriers and months of preparation, 10 foster kids embarked on a 10-day expedition in July. The participants are all girls, aged 15 to 18. Nine live with foster parents and one is in a Fort Myers group home. The trip included whitewater rafting along the Rio Grande and five days on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona. The goal was to empower these young people to achieve great things— and to open their eyes to the plight of those even less fortunate than themselves. Among the trip rules? No makeup, no cell phones. A film crew joined them to make a documentary in the hope that it will help recruit more participants. Next year, McGinty plans to send 10 boys on the same adventure. The all-expenses-paid trip costs $5,000 per child; McGinty, who retired 20 years ago from his role as director of the IT staffing firm he founded in 1983, says he raised $95,000 from his friends and donated $30,000 himself—enough to sponsor 25 children. All the girls pledged to do public service in their community after they returned. “That’s a commitment,” McGinty says. “That’s what gives the program wings.”

TRIBUTE TO A NAPLES CLASSIC
The Dock at Crayton Cove (dockcraytoncove.com) celebrated its fortieth anniversary this year and hosted the final Great Dock Canoe Race in May. The milestone was the perfect time for Debby DePasquale, wife of The Dock founder Vin DePasquale, to publish a book: The Dock at Crayton Cove, Everybody’s Kitchen (2016, Mascot Books). “When we would get together with friends, they were always curious about the restaurant and why Vin chose Naples,” says DePasquale. “Finally, I told him, ‘We need to write down your story.’” With recipes and photographs, the book illustrates the history of The Dock and how it has changed over the years. Proceeds from sales benefit The David Christian DePasquale ’92 Memorial Scholarship Fund at The Culinary Institute of America, founded to honor Vin’s late son. The book is available at The Dock at Crayton Cove, Riverwalk at Tin City, and Barnes & Noble. —Anna Welch
THE UNITED ARTS COUNCIL OF COLLIER COUNTY HAS A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WITH A LONG HISTORY IN NONPROFITS. MARCIA CLARK FIRST VOLUNTEERED AT UAC AFTER MOVING TO NAPLES A LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR AGO. THE PITTSBURGH NATIVE HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH NONPROFITS SINCE THE 1980S, WHEN SHE FOUNDED THE MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION OF WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. “WHAT YOU LOVE WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG SHOULD BE INCORPORATED INTO WHAT YOU DO AS AN ADULT,” SAYS CLARK. “I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS IN FOURTH OR FIFTH GRADE, I WENT AROUND THE BLOCK COLLECTING DONATIONS FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPITALS.” SHE PLANS ON CONTINUING SOME UAC EVENTS, SUCH AS THE STARS IN THE ARTS AWARD, BUT IS ALSO PUSHING FOR FUNDING FOR ART CLASSES IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. ONE OF HER GOALS IS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON HOW IMPORTANT ART IS TO THE COMMUNITY. —A.W.
BRIDGING HISTORY
The architect responsible for bringing a touch of tiki culture to numerous buildings on Marco Island has been honored for his contributions to the island’s development. In a celebration in May, the Smokehouse Bay Bridge was renamed the Herbert R. Savage Bridge after the man who brought a taste of Polynesia to Marco. Attendees from the Marco Island Historical Society and Collier County Commissioner Donna Fiala joined Savage and his wife, Emily, in singing “God Bless America,” followed by cake decorated with an image of the Savages and the bridge. —A.W.

West Indian glamour debuted a new address in February on the most sparkling of Anguilla’s 33 ultra-turquoise beaches, Shoal Bay East. Say hello to Zemi Beach House Resort & Spa (zemibeach.com), a collection of lowrise mansions designed by celebrated Caribbean architect Lane Pettigrew and cast over 6 acres and a near quarter-mile of beachfront. Sixty-three guest rooms seduce with a blend of dark and light woods, an earth-tone palette, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame Anguilla’s 50 shades of blue. The vistas extend to the beachfront infinity-edge swimming pool and continue at the two seasonal-cuisine waterfront restaurants, which highlight authentic Anguillan flavors and feature local rum on tap. Zemi’s opening comes on the heels of facelifts at Malliouhana Hotel & Spa (malliouhana .aubergeresorts.com) and Cap Juluca (cap juluca.com), the two Greco-Moorish hotels

responsible for placing Anguilla on the jet-set map in the mid-1980s. The new Malliouhana Resort & Spa, reimagined by the teams at SB Architects and TAL Studio, now stands as a 46room boutique property of Auberge Resorts Collection pedigree, while Cap Juluca struts a rejuvenated edge with more modern decor and a newly constructed presidential suite equivalent, the 3,290-square-foot Jonquil Suite. In October, the design-driven Viceroy Anguilla will reopen after a two-month make-
over as the Four Seasons Resort and Private Residences Anguilla (fourseasons.com). The resort will retain its Caribbean-cool vibe and Kelly Wearstler interiors while implementing Four Seasons–caliber service and excellent food and wine offerings. To accommodate Anguilla’s new wave of luxe inventory, Tradewind Aviation (tradewind aviation.com) has started servicing Anguilla directly from Puerto Rico on a fleet of contemporary Pilatus PC-12s.
Bermuda
Following a renovation, Cap Juluca now marries its Greco-Moorish exterior with more modern interiors. 40 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
In the late-nineteenth century, Bermuda’s aquamarine coastlines were deemed fit for royalty—a princess to be exact—when Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Louise, fell in love with the natural beauty of this petite British colony. The Princess Hotel, named in Louise’s honor, opened in 1885 and attracted the who’s who of the early-twentieth-century global elite. Flash-forward 131 years, and this

history-steeped hotel, rechristened the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club (thehamilton princess.com), is penning a new chapter after a $100-million refresh. Though the traditional, salmon-tinted exteriors of the 400-key resort remain, the interior is a different story. The hotel’s new modern art collection comprises 60 museum-quality works strewn across the property, starting with the gallery-like lobby, adorned with art by Tom Wesselmann and Andy Warhol. While all accommodations have been renovated, 43 have been converted into larger guest suites at the hands of Botelho Wood Architects. Of the three new restaurants, don’t miss Marcus’, Bermuda’s first and only celebrity-chef restaurant. The sleek eatery showcases Bermudian cuisine as interpreted by James Beard Award– winning chef Marcus Samuelsson, with signature dishes like trout roe tacos and fish chowder croquettes dotting the menu. A new Exhale Spa offers the wellness brand’s flagship treatments and fitness classes and flanks an adults-only spa pool, a quieter alternative to the resort’s main harborside infinity pool. In anticipation of hosting the thirty-fifth America’s Cup next summer, Hamilton Princess & Beach Club has also supersized its marina to
become the island’s first and only fullservice marina, accommodating up to 60 water toys. But it needn’t be race time to enjoy an afternoon on a super-yacht, catamaran, or fishing boat. Many of these glossy ships work with the resort for pursuits in the island’s cove-laced, pink-sanded water world.
St. Barths
We can never get enough of St. Barths— our favorite St. Tropez–inspired sliver of the French West Indies—so we’ve rounded up a few fabulous and timely excuses for your next dose of European glamour, five-star pampering, and incredible gastronomy. This year’s top pretext: Visit the island’s newest and most coveted resort product, the Christopher Columbus Suite at the Eden Rock - St. Barths (edenrockhotel.com). This 2,200-square-foot sanctuary, named after the island’s founder, is a glass-encased jewel box that sits atop the hotel promontory, strewn with Italian furnishings, pop art, and views of St. Jean Bay. Island regulars will recognize the space as the former lobby, which was moved beachside to accommodate this architectural masterpiece. Over on the island’s easterly reaches, Le Guanahani (leguanahani.com/en) is also paying homage to Columbus’ voyage to the New World with the nautical-themed Admiral Suite, the final touch of the famed resort’s $40-million refurbishment and expansion. The suite perches by Grand Cul-de-Sac bay and features wrap-
around balconies and direct beach access. Foodies now can add another annual pilgrimage to their calendar: the St. Barths Gourmet Festival (stbarthgourmetfestival.com). In just three years, this wine and food festival has grown into a spectacular happening with internationally acclaimed chefs taking over the island’s most popular restaurants at ticketed events boasting French-Creole fusions and wine pairings. The 2016 festival, scheduled for November 3-6, will be headlined by celebrity Parisian chef Christian Le Squer, who, earlier this year, received three Michelin stars for his Le Cinq restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris. « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2016

Vision of the Future Come 2036, your Rolls-Royce will be selfdriving, electric powered, and will redefine the luxury car experience By Howard Walker
“Home, James,” has long been the oh-so-British greeting to the suited-and-booted chauffeur when an owner slumps into the backseat of his or her Rolls-Royce. It is probably quite confusing if the driver is actually named Derek. Fast-forward 20 years to 2036 and, according to Rolls-Royce’s newly revealed vision of luxury mobility, its super-wealthy clientele will more likely be uttering the command, “Home, Eleanor.” And it won’t be to a living, breathing chauffeur, but to what the luxury carmaker is calling an “ethereal concierge,” who will rest inside a glass screen where James once sat. So why Eleanor? A nod to Mrs. Roosevelt, perhaps? Or Nicholas Cage’s throaty Mustang in Gone in 60 Seconds? No, this is Eleanor Thornton, who back in 1911 posed for sculptor Charles Sykes to become the Spirit of Ecstasy, aka the famous Rolls-Royce Flying Lady hood ornament. Think of Eleanor as some overachieving version of Apple’s Siri personal assistant. She’ll be your go-to gal to help you control one of the most visionary automotive concepts ever created, a car Rolls-Royce simply calls the 103EX. But there’s nothing simple about this groundbreaking, quite magnificent car of the future, which fully embraces the likelihood that, come 2036, luxury automobiles will be driving themselves and pow42
NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
ered not by some honking V-12 but by electricity. And contrary to the popular image of tomorrow’s luxury cars being dull, anonymous bubbles driving along in bunched-up convoys, RollsRoyce believes they can be grand, stately, and more decadent than ever. That’s why this 103EX is huge. Stretching close to 20 feet long and 5 feet tall, it’s roughly the same size as today’s mighty Rolls Phantom. The hood alone measures more than 8 feet, which is pretty extravagant considering the V-12 that would normally fill that space has been jettisoned in favor of a pair of electric motors. Where you’d expect the V-12 to sit, there’s a slide-out compartment for the owner’s luggage instead. Perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of this 103EX concept is the passenger compartment, which Rolls-Royce calls the Grand Sanctuary. Inside there’s space for two, because if there’s no need for a chauffeur then there’s no need for front seats, or even a steering wheel. What you have instead is a huge sofa with enough legroom to accommodate the leggiest NBA all-star. A huge, wall-to-wall glass screen takes the place of the front cabin and offers access to Eleanor, who is waiting to accommodate your every request. Tell her where you need to go and she’ll take you. Tell her what time you expect to finish dinner and she’ll have the car ready outside the restaurant. And, being the super-organized digital assistant that
&

she is, she’ll remind you of appointments, set up reservations, adjust the temperature, select the music, or play any movie you fancy. Or, if you prefer, Eleanor will simply shut up and let you snooze while the car drives itself serenely and autonomously to your destination. Being a Rolls-Royce, the cabin is a masterpiece of bespoke elegance. Hand-twisted silk hugs that two-seater sofa, deep-pile ivory wool covers the floor, and dark Macassar wood paneling wraps around the cabin. Yes, those trademark rear-hinged “suicide” doors are retained, but, in an effort to make getting in and out easier, the glass roof extends
open like a clamshell, allowing you to stand up and step out. And just in case anyone milling around is in doubt of the importance of those arriving, lasers project a virtual red carpet of light as the doors open. The design team at Rolls-Royce, run by the talented Giles Taylor, stress that this 103EX is just one possible vision of the future. Advanced manufacturing technologies like 3D printing will allow customers to be more closely involved in the design process, dictating the size and even the shape of the car. Just think of all the fun you could have deciding who should be the voice of Eleanor. In my opinion, only the Queen of England would do. «

SUPER MEN Meet seven notable Neapolitans whose passion for the community is equaled by their engaging personalities and sizzling style in our fifth annual salute to distinguished local gentlemen

Robert W. “Bob” Schoonmaker Financial professional and physical fitness expert Bob Schoonmaker moved to Naples for a job—twice. The Ohioan came first in 2007 with Fifth Third Bank to run its investment advisory group, which he did until 2011. Then the heartstrings of Schoonmaker and his wife, Laurie, pulled them back to Ohio, where he returned for an opportunity with Huntington Wealth & Investment Management in Toledo. Two years later, the firm offered him a post as Florida Region manager in Naples, so it seems something keeps drawing the couple to this fair city. Schoonmaker’s passion is CrossFit. He works out at Pure Fitness in Naples every day, and along with Laurie, coaches others at the gym every Saturday morning. Schoonmaker sits on the boards of The Immokalee Foundation and Champions for Learning, two organizations he sees as committed to putting children and young adults in the best position to succeed in education and in life. Personal style: Comfortable jeans and a T-shirt. Words to live by: Don’t take yourself too seriously; nobody else does. Superhero name: The Instigator. I’ve been known to “stir the pot,” but I only use my power for good. Greatest achievement: My 25-year marriage to my grade-school sweetheart, Laurie. “Super” spots: Local ethnic restaurants Fernandez the Bull and Inca’s Kitchen. Guilty pleasures: Small-batch bourbon, dark chocolate, and an occasional fine cigar.

Brien Spina The entrepreneurial bug bit Brien Spina early. The Massachusetts native started his first business at 13, selling toy airplanes outside FAO Schwartz in Boston. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, as his parents were small business owners themselves and encouraged his business interests. After graduating from college, Spina moved to Marco Island to be near his family, and at 21 launched his own charter fishing business, Satisfaction Guaranteed, growing his fleet to 10 boats. Spina opened a small New England–style seafood restaurant, Capt. Brien’s Seafood & Roast Beef, on Marco Island. He moved to a larger space where he added the Off The Hook Comedy Club, which has since moved to Naples with restaurant ROW by Captain Brien & Crew. Now 39, Spina continues to dream big. This summer he cut the ribbon on the SWFL Performing Arts Center in Bonita Springs, a sprawling venue he co-owns with his father, Santo. The center hosts Off-Broadway and musical productions, comedy shows, conventions, and private events. Along with his family, he founded the not-for-profit Southwest Florida Performing Arts & Cultural Learning Center to provide arts and culture to underprivileged children in the community through after-school programs. Super-power wish: To be in five different places at one time. I try every day, but it never seems to work! Philanthropy means: Sharing your good fortune and knowledge to inspire and help others grow. How he spends a free day: With my wife, Tracy, and four children, Breana, Will, Andrew, and Cameron. Whether we’re at the movies, riding bikes, family barbecues, or just relaxing together, spending time with them takes away all the daily stress.

One of my greatest moments was performing on the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal in Athens, Greece, to 5,000 sailors returning home from the Vietnam War.
Alan James Many partygoers in Naples have grooved to the tunes of Alan James and The Powerhouse Band at charity fundraisers each season. James, the London-born president and founder of The Powerhouse Group, has been in the entertainment industry for more than 40 years, playing and producing events in 30-plus countries. Plenty of famous names pop up in James’ story. His career includes years of working alongside Roy Orbison, and as a young musician in London, he became in demand as a rock guitarist on the club circuit that featured then up-and-comers Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page. While James and wife Jessica contribute to many nonprofits, they are especially passionate about animals, with eight cats and two lovebirds. They volunteer at the Naples Cat Alliance cleaning litter boxes, washing floors, and tending to animals that need any attention. Other nonprofits James supports include Humane Society Naples and the Garden of Hope and Courage. Personal style: Hip, and anything that makes me look 25 again. Why Naples: I travel extensively to many exotic locations, but I can’t wait to get back to the charm and beauty here. Surprising fact: Bowling’s not cool, but I love it. I bowled with Roger Moore when I was a kid. He was filming a James Bond movie in my town and was in the next alley. I said, “Hey, Mr. Bond, do you want to play a game?” so we played a couple of games together. How many people can say they’ve bowled with James Bond? I actually won, too! 48 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

As the leader of the YMCA, I meet with my small management team twice a week and exercise. I want that to be the routine, because you’ve got to live the mission, not just preach it.
Paul Thein When Paul Thein decided to reposition his career out of higher learning, he thought the YMCA would benefit from his education in athletic administration and management, as well as his background in fundraising and developing youth and community. The Minnesota native signed on as CEO of a flagging 110-year-old YMCA in Waycross, Georgia, where he led a turnaround that tripled membership and doubled revenues. Serendipitously, he then got a call from the national YMCA asking if he was interested in a job in Naples—a place where his parents and other family have lived part-time for four decades. Six months after he joined as president and CEO of the Greater Naples YMCA in 2013, he oversaw the rebuilding and renovation of the YMCA’s facility following a serious fire that caused extensive damage. Under his leadership, membership has doubled and plans are in the works for two satellite locations in Collier County. Thein’s honors include the Outstanding Service to Community Award 2014-2015 by Rotary Club of Naples Bay and being named a Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Fellow. Thein is most proud, though, of his family: wife Shanon, son Brody, 8, and daughter Shalyn, 12. Super-power wish: Limitless energy … so much to accomplish and so little time. “Super” spot: My family and I love to boat, and we go to Keewaydin Island a lot. Guilty pleasure: A cold beer on a hot day. Bucket list: I would love to do an RV travel vacation across the country and make the kind of family memories for my kids that stick with me from my own childhood.

Scott Sherman A self-described Southern gentleman from Memphis, Scott Sherman moved to Naples in 2007 for his job as engineering manager of knee arthroplasty at Arthrex Inc. Though Sherman has earned nine patents in his career so far, his most important role has been as a single father to three grown daughters and his youngest, Shealyn, 13, who has Asperger’s syndrome. When her mother passed away in October 2014, Shealyn moved across the country to live with Sherman. It was a struggle, since he could not find an organization that helped kids after the loss of a parent. Then he met Angela Melvin, a parent in a similar situation who is one of the founders of the nonprofit Valerie’s House, which offers peer-to-peer mentoring for children who have lost a parent or sibling. Sherman joined efforts to help make Valerie’s House a reality and currently sits on the board. He is a graduate of Leadership Collier and serves on the Leadership Collier Foundation’s board of directors. His leisure interests include ballroom dancing, kickboxing, hiking, and traveling. He’s visited six continents and plans to take Shealyn to London, Paris, Rome, and Munich next summer. Personal style: Contemporary, flashy, geek. Superhero name: Dr. Meticulous Stress reliever: I sculpt micro flowers from polymer clay—tiger lilies, orchids, roses, irises, daffodils, hibiscus. You can’t think about anything else when you’re focusing on the details of this delicate piece of art. It’s very Zen. “Super” spots: The H.P. Williams Roadside Park boardwalk in Ochopee; Title Boxing Club (great workout and the best therapy ever); the fire pits at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort; the Sunburst Café Guilty pleasure: Bulleit bourbon with a few rocks. Bucket list: I’d like to make a significant contribution to medical science before I move into the next phase of my life.
Eric J. Hochman Dr. Eric J. Hochman, a native of Cleveland, serves on the staff at Naples Community Hospital and Physician’s Regional Medical Center. He also founded Gulfshore Concierge Medicine in Naples. He credits his wife, Kimberly, who has been involved in charity work from a young age, for inspiring him to help others. He recently concluded a term as president of the Collier County Medical Society, where he served on the board for five years. He volunteers at the Neighborhood Health Clinic, and has volunteered for the Physician Led Access Network in the past. The doctor speaks in the community on numerous health topics, and writes a monthly column for the Naples Daily News about community benefits of the Blue Zones Project. He and Kimberly, who have two sons, moved to Naples in 2004. Personal style: Wear whatever makes you feel good. Words to live by: If it’s worth doing, do it right. His hero: My grandfather lost his mother at a young age, survived a difficult childhood, and later became a WW II hero, earning a Purple Heart. He sustained many physical injuries and taught himself to walk again. How he spends a free day: I really enjoy doing anything with my wife and children— dining, movies, golf, relaxing, and spending time outdoors. Guilty pleasure: Fudgestuffed chocolate chip cookies.

My wife inspired me to get more involved in the community. It has been very rewarding, and I encourage others to do the same— every individual can make a difference.
Philip Douglas Salon owner and celebrity stylist Philip Douglas’ accent gives away his Massachusetts roots, even though he left the state decades ago. He grew up with five sisters and a brother, and describes his family as My Big Fat Greek Wedding. He’s not Greek, but with many extended family members—even all eight great-grandparents—living within walking distance of each other, life resembled the film. He was always artistically gifted, and his beauty career unofficially began at age 17 when his mother enlisted him to redo a horrible hairstyle his oldest sister, Paula, got at their grandmother’s hairdresser the day of her prom. He began hairdressing school shortly after. As generous philanthropists, Douglas and his spouse, Doug Olsen, who have four dogs, lend huge support to Humane Society Naples. For years they have supported Naples Botanical Garden’s Hats in the Garden, coordinating hair and makeup for fashion shows, and are involved in myriad other charities. Personal style: Casual, fashionable, but with an edge. Proud moments: Winning the 2015 Animaltarian Award with Doug Olsen, from Humane Society Naples; the Hope and Sunshine awards from American Cancer Society; and American First Place in an international styling competition, then representing the United States in Paris. How he spends a free day: I love to spend a day in the garden, just me and the beauty of Mother Nature. Guilty pleasures: Binge watching—lately, Game of Thrones, and a British show, Vicious. I binge read, too, mostly women’s biographies—Marie Antoinette, Bloody Mary, Queen Elizabeth I, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford. I find women who have had greatness thrust upon them fascinating.

Cool down your summer beach day with a dip in the Gulf of Mexico. And score a little exercise while you’re at it. Our calm waters are conducive to swimming— especially in areas without a lot of motorized water-sports action or rushing pass waters, such as the beach that fronts Pelican Bay, a short walk south from Vanderbilt Beach.

Nature lovers go to the beach for the wildlife. Shorebirds skitter and stab at the sand. Dolphins poke their smiles out of waves. Pelicans dive-bomb for breakfast. What a show! Tigertail Beach on Marco Island offers some of the best birding. Head to Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park, voted No. 2 on Dr. Beach’s 10 Best Beaches in the America list for 2015 (drbeach.org), to see gopher tortoises navigating the sands. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park (floridastateparks.org), ranked ninth by Dr. Beach, is known for its summer nesting population of loggerhead sea turtles.

Keewaydin IslanD
Officially called Key Island, locals refer to it as Keewaydin, the name of an erstwhile resort on the unbridged barrier island southwest of downtown Naples. The 8-mile-long island attracts birds, sea turtles, and recreational boaters. The latter congregate en masse most weekends at the island’s north end, with concession boats on the scene to cater. Those looking for a bit more seclusion venture farther south.
M
Since prehistoric times, loggerhead sea turtles have lumbered onto local beaches to deposit their nests of round, leathery eggs. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in North Naples offers a turtle-walk program during the summer to educate park visitors about the endangered creatures. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida (conservancy .org) monitors populations on Keewaydin Island and other city beaches. Local resorts join the effort to protect the species by asking their guests to close their curtains at night so that the lights do not confuse mother sea turtles and their hatchlings. LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort (laplayaresort.com) in Naples goes as far as designing a summer package that includes the opportunity to adopt a sea turtle.

Quiet
The lovely spots that offer beach access with no facilities, such as some of those along Hickory Boulevard on Bonita Beach and along Gordon Drive in Naples, are where you will find a sliver of peace and quiet. Many don’t even have spaces for cars to park, so plan on riding your bike or walking in.
Reeling
You can fish from shore at any local beach, as long as you have the proper fishing license (myfwc.com/ fishing). Anglers have the best luck near the pass at Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park or at Gordon Pass in south Naples. At the Naples Pier at Naples Municipal Beach you are covered by the pier’s license, so you do not need to purchase one yourself.

S Seashells
The more secluded the beach, the more seashells you will usually find. A prime example of this rule of thumb, Coconut Island north of Old Marco—more of a sandbar than an island, really—is a shell-seeker’s dream, because one can only get there by boat. Big Hickory Island in Bonita Beach is another well-kept sheller’s secret.
Tortoises
Heed the signs when you drive into Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park, which is accessible from Bonita Beach. They warn of gopher tortoises, and they’re not kidding. Certain times of day you will see tortoises walking the roadways and hanging out in the parking lot. (Check under your car before you back out.) The statelisted reptile digs long burrows, which it shares with more than 350 different species.

Some days you just want to channel a Jimmy Buffett song and leave mainland, mainstream life behind to get stranded on a sandbar. That’s when you need a boat to escape to such remote islands as Coconut, Keewaydin, Cape Sable, and others in the Ten Thousand Islands.

Nothing resembles spring break—no matter what time of year—like a rousing game of beach volleyball. Pack up “Wilson” and head to Lowdermilk Park in Naples or Bonita Beach Park in Bonita Springs.

Weddings
Lovers Key State Park (floridastateparks.org), north of Bonita Beach, hosts an estimated 200 weddings each year. With “lovers” right in the name, what do you expect? It also doesn’t hurt that it has a designated wedding gazebo right on the beach. The park got its name in the days before it was reachable by car. It annually hosts a vow-renewal ceremony on Valentine’s Day that drew more than 150 people in 2016.

At Naples Municipal Beach, sand meets city for a dose of cosmopolitan. Just steps off the beach, you can visit the Historic Palm Cottage and its garden (napleshistoricalsociety.org), then head to the Third Street South neighborhood for shopping, cocktails, and dining as casual as Old Naples Pub (naplespubs.com) or as fine as The Continental (damicoscontinental.com).
Yum
If you’d rather not have to lose eyeshot of the beach when you take a food break, we have two suggestions for a proper beach dining ambience: Doc’s Beach House (docsbeachhouse.com) next to Bonita Beach Park in Bonita Springs and Sunset Grille (sunsetgrilleonmarcoisland .com) at South Beach Park in Marco Island. Other beaches, such as Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park and Clam Pass Park in North Naples, have their own food concessions.
Zebra Longwings
Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park lives up to its “preserve” status by protecting a number of species, including the winged insects of its native butterfly garden. The zebra longwing, Florida’s state butterfly, flits among the garden’s host plants along with other species. «

Although fall officially arrives this month, there is still time to savor the “Everybody Loves Ramen” summer celebration of the soup-and-noodle dish at Zen Asian BBQ (eatatzen.com). Chef Koko’s recent journey to Japan inspired him to create special versions of ramen, with broth choices of shio (salt), shoyo (soy sauce), miso, and tonkotso (pork), as well as tsukemen (broth and noodles separate with noodles dipped into the broth). The topping choices include chashu pork, chicken, pork belly, seafood, vegetables, kimchi, and nori. A ramen tasting menu is offered as well. —Kat Smith

confidential EXECUTIVE CHEF ROEL MESTA The siren call of the kitchen proved impossible for Roel Mesta to resist. The chef, who puts his creative spin on traditional dishes at Masa, D’Amico & Partner’s homage to contemporary Mexican cuisine in Mercato, has a passion for cooking that infuses his bloodline. His grandmother ran Doña Martha’s in East Naples for many years, while his mother, Rosalinda Mesta, has been in the business for four decades, currently working at the Fogg Café in Naples Botanical Garden. Mesta began working in restaurants around Naples when he was 14, eventually settling into a long career with D’Amico restaurants. Since he took over at Masa in December, he’s kicked up the menu with dishes like marinated grilled steak skewers and anaheim chiles filled with shrimp and masa. —Kat Smith

Early influence: When I was 14, I washed dishes at Ristorante Ciao. Chef Gianfranco Loretti saw my interest, and I always wanted to learn. He set down a good foundation for the way I think about cooking, the way I treat food, the respect I give it. Fresh is best, Tostada with that’s the kind of attitude, to do the best seafood we can with what we have. His most popular Masa dishes: The revamped tacos have gotten really good feedback. For lunch, believe it or not, people are going crazy over the burger. I made it like what I remember from Mexico. On the side of the street this lady had a huge grill and made great burgers, with ham, cheese, pickled peppers, all kinds of toppings. We make our bread in house for that, really put it another step above. Most important ingredient: Love—for the food, for our guests. I want to give them a great experience. Something he refused to cook: I once had a request for medium-rare Chilean sea bass. I can’t see that. At Masa, I like our guests to stick to the menu and see our interpretations of dishes that are traditional to Mexico, but if someone has a request, I’m happy to oblige if it’s within my reach. For a great meal in Naples: My wife, Maricela, and I both love Café Lurcat. Not just because my friend Mike Mueller is the chef. The food is well prepared and made with care. Guilty pleasure: I shouldn’t eat it, but I love carnitas. My uncle would make it in Mexico, a big pot of chunks of pork. It’s not the best thing for health. Favorite way to spend free time: With my family. I have four beautiful children. I love spending quality time and getting them away from cell phones and games and all that. My kids are not allowed to use those on my days off. You’re with me, I’m with you, let’s talk, let’s laugh, go for a bike ride, go have dinner, let’s cook. Carrying on tradition: My son, Roel, who is 13, will probably follow in my footsteps. He critiques food, and says the right things. I wonder, how does he know that? I think he’s going down that route—he says he wants to be a sous chef at Masa.

NOTEWORTHY IN EAST NAPLES Peruvian-food lovers’ latest crush is Lima Restaurant & Pisco Bar (lima-restaurant.com) in Golden Gate. It realizes the dream of the owners, chef Dario and wife Amanda Gonzalez Zuniga, to open a restaurant that captures the essence of Lima’s modern, creative cuisine. What’s more, there are several out-of-the-ordinary cocktails made with flavor-infused versions of pisco, a brandy made in Peru. Those caught up in the current craze for sipping fine liquors and noshing in a laid-back, speakeasy-inspired setting will find what they crave at Whiskey Park (whiskeypark-naples.com) on Mercantile Avenue. The owners, longtime friends Larry Hoelzer, former owner of Grumpy’s Ale House, and Chris Prattini, one-time executive chef at Truluck’s, serve up New Orleans– influenced dishes (muffaletta sliders, gumbo, jambalaya) and many other items. As one might expect, there’s also an impressive list of bourbons, singlemalt Scotch, and blended whiskeys. The Kladis family, John and Kontantina with daughters Cristina and Katerina, have hatched The Coupe (thecoupefl.com) on U.S. 41 near Sugden Regional Park. They whip up comforting breakfast classics like omelets, pancakes, and waffles as well as more sophisticated benedicts and frittatas in a bright, cheerful setting. Lunch dishes range from burgers, salads, and sandwiches to assorted pannini and specials. —K.S.

His answer, Midtown Kitchen + Bar (midtownkitchenandbar.net), fills the bill. Local is the word, from area purveyors supplying ingredients for the creative American cuisine, to decor featuring art by Southwest Florida artists Bryan Relyea, Kage Harp, and Joy Price. Relyea collaborated with Hernandez’ wife, Lisa, on a large collage that blends uptown and downtown scenes with Midtown in the center, plus a few funny and family photos mixed in. Gary Shanabarger, who owns Edward Gary Design, Naples, worked with Lisa on the interior design. Since opening, the Hernandezes have been happy to see the new restaurant drawing a crowd of regulars for fresh, seasonal craft cocktails and dinner. For Goodness’ SAKE America develops a taste for premium bottles of Japan’s national drink
BY MARK SPIVAK

ushi is now found seemingly everywhere in the United States, but 30 years ago, the trend was in its infancy. Back then, diners accompanied it with hot sake from porcelain flasks. Those drinks were rotgut, but a lot of people thought the act of consuming sake marked them as savvy world travelers. Today it’s unusual to find a top-notch sushi bar without an assortment of junmai, junmai ginjo, and junmai daiginjo served chilled and available in small (180-ml) bottles. Sake remains the national beverage of Japan, with about 1,300 producers scattered around the country. While it is frequently referred to as rice wine, that term is a misnomer. Sake is made from a process that resembles beer brewing, although there are differences. The two most important ingredients are rice and water, so sake breweries are typically located near pure sources, such as mountain springs. The rice used for sake is larger than edible rice, with a bigger core of starch at the center. During brewing, the starch is converted into sugars, which in turn are transformed into alcohol. Generally, the amount of outer bran removed during the milling process determines the grade. Junmai, junmai ginjo, and junmai daiginjo, respectively, have 30, 40, and 50 percent of the outer kernel polished off prior to production. Junmai ginjo and junmai daiginjo may have distilled alcohol added during the brewing process as well. While it’s possible to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on sake in the nation’s leading sushi bars, consumers can easily find an exceptional bottle of premium sake for less than $100. Vine Connections (vineconnections.com) imports dozens of labels from Japan, including Takasogo’s Divine Droplets ($65) and Rihaku’s Dreamy Clouds ($30), a nigori, or unfiltered, sake. The junmai ginjo from Hakkaisan, one of the most popular premium brands in Japan, is widely available in the States for $40. American sake is coming of age. It has a marketing advantage over the Japanese

version in that most people can pronounce the names of the brands. It also costs less, so consumers can painlessly try a wider range of products, although purists might contend that the quality of rice and water is inferior. The leader in the domestic category is Oregon’s Sake One, which produces Momokawa and Moonstone (both around $15). The Momokawa sakes are jumnai ginjo, while
the Moonstone varieties are flavored—think of it as the sake equivalent of White Zinfandel. Roughly speaking, the difference between Momokawa and Japanese sake is similar to the distinction between California and French wine, with the American version displaying more forward and uncomplicated flavors. Sake has become a popular ingredient for the new generation of American mixologists. Although the trend is cooling now, sake cocktails are still ubiquitous in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, as well as South Florida. Given the low alcohol content of sake (usually 18 to 20 percent, slightly higher than most wines but considerably lower than
spirits), it provides a welcome alternative for many consumers, especially during the hot months. Filtered sake blends well with fruit juices, particularly citrus, while nigori unfiltered sake is a good match for tropical mixers, such as cream of coconut, and can make a delightful tiki cocktail. There are numerous online sources for ordering fine Japanese sake. To learn more, one of the best websites is Sake World by John Gauntner (sake-world.com). An American who has lived in Japan since 1998, Gauntner explains the intricacies of sake in clear and understandable language. «

POOLSIDE paradise PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL CARONCHI
Waterfalls, fire features, and faux rock are trending as beautiful additions to pools that create a unique focal point to any home. Jim and Patricia Pike chose a major expansion to add excitement to pool time and serve as an enticement for their children and grandchildren to visit their Bonita Bay home more often. And when the couple host charitable events, the new dramatic pool, which spans approximately 160 feet, serves as an entertaining draw.

The bottom and sides of the entire pool are layered with glass beads instead of the typical cement floor. “After a couple years, a cement pool floor gets a little rough and kids come out of the pool with scraped up feet,” Pike says. “Now we have all perfectly rounded glass beads and it feels unbelievable on your feet. Fungi Town
It is National Mushroom Month, a time to celebrate the nutritional punch the humble mushroom adds to just about any meal. Whether you prefer the common button, meaty portobello, prized porcini, or any other type from the fungi family, they all offer a variety of important nutrients. While we’re always reminded to eat foods that resemble the colors of the rainbow, the mushroom is a delicious exception to the rule—one not to be overlooked. Potassium, selenium, antioxidants, and B vitamins are among the many nutrients in mushrooms. Even better, they come in a multitude of shapes and sizes that make them fun to cook with and a delight for creative chefs and fungiphiles everywhere.

Outdoor Screens
at the Touch of a Button!
Automated roll-up screens for residential and commercial applications are the newest technology for large openings. At the touch of a button they provide the ideal environment for insect, sun and/or privacy control. When the screens are lowered there is minimal reduction in ambient light, outward visibility and air flow while keeping out windblown debris, insects, and other pesky critters. When not in use they vanish to leave a completely unobstructed view of nature.
EASIER THAN EVER to enjoy benefits such as sun protection, glare reduction and privacy…effortlessly!

Bugs’ Life
Another fantasy dreamed up by Cirque du Soleil alights at Germain Arena, Estero, September 28–October 2. The troupe brings OVO to Florida for the first time this fall, a production that has been seen by more than 4 million people around the globe since its 2009 debut. The title means egg in Portuguese, and the two O’s on either side of the V represent an insect’s eyes and nose. The story’s setting is a colorful ecosystem where insects work, live, and play in a nonstop frenzy. A mysterious egg appears, sparking much curiosity among the insect residents. The plot also involves a romance between a gawky insect who falls for a lovely ladybug. As always, what attracts audiences like bees to nectar are the fanciful costumes, whimsical sets, and most of all, mindblowing acrobatic feats by the performers. (cirquedusoleil.com/ovo) —Kat Smith

I also met my husband at its Young Executives Sunset Cruise three years ago, so I have them to thank for bringing us together. 6 11. Favorite local spa: Spa 41. It’s a hidden oasis 7 tucked in the corner of the Tanglewood Market Place.
