THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT

RONALD J. WOODS NIedit@naplesillustrated.com

ROBERT NELSON

W

hile I’ve always admired people who can finish their holiday shopping early, I have to admit there’s something exhilarating about the last-minute rush to the stores. Although I try not to wait to do my own shopping, the calendar has a way of sneaking up on people. That’s part of the fun of the holidays, though. The mad dash to crowded malls and busy local retailers isn’t such a treat in itself, but there is a certain pleasure in knowing we’re all in it together. There aren’t many common experiences that unite us anymore in this diverse and busy world, but holiday shopping is one of them. Almost everyone has a story to tell. By the end of this month, we’ll probably have more stories to share. According to a survey conducted in October by Harrison Group for American Express, spending by affluent consumers on holiday gifts this year is projected to grow by 4 percent. If that means Waterside Shops, Fifth Avenue South and other fine shopping venues are just a little bit busier, so much the better. It’s good for our community. And, really, our community is what defines us. The place we call home—our family, our friends, our activities—is worth celebrating, especially during the festive season. For some of us, Florida may be just one of several places we choose to live, but it is distinctly ours. It might not offer the holiday traditions we grew up with elsewhere—we lean more toward boat rides than sleigh rides, and we favor chilled Champagne over mulled cider—but the new traditions we have developed here are just as important. Over the past few years, I have noticed a growing desire expressed by our readers for simple pleasures—spending time with the people they care about most and relishing their private celebrations and shared moments—without regard to geography. Home is where the heart is, as the saying goes, and though we still love to travel, shop and throw parties, we seem to be more focused than ever on the genuine, meaningful occasions that help us create lasting holiday memories. This, too, is becoming an increasingly common touchstone, and a good one at that. Now, as we look forward to the cherished moments that await us during this year’s holiday season, it’s heartwarming to remind ourselves of what we share with others in our unique circumstances—our own tight-knit community, if you will. Here at Naples Illustrated, with our own “family” of talented staff members, readers and valuable advertising partners, we appreciate being a part of this community more than ever by celebrating exceptional occasions and every aspect of the luxury lifestyle—the clothes we wear, the events we attend, the places we travel, the way we decorate our homes—all year-round. Best wishes for a splendid holiday season and a prosperous new year.

FROM THE EDITOR

TRADITIONS love December. It’s a season of so many celebrations and traditions. Every year I look forward to putting up holiday decorations, particularly opening a box of ornaments that includes typed notes from my grandmother explaining the meaning of each ornament—treasures I will surely pass along to my children. One of my favorite ornaments from her is an angel she made out of ribbon and other parts of the corsage she wore at my wedding. I also treasure the nutcracker I bought on a trip to Germany with my sister; each time I take it out of the box it brings back memories of that trip. It’s like greeting an old friend. I’m not the only one who savors the season. Patty and Jay Campbell are among those who make the holidays a more than month-long festival, starting with decorating that begins in November. Through the years, their own traditions grow, with more decorations added. They make sure to share their festive environment with family and friends. See their holiday home on page 74. Another favorite part of this month is feasting. From sweets to traditional meals, there’s no shortage of eating, which is probably why the exercise and diet industry ramps up to a fevered frenzy in January. Food traditions are often culturally based, so NI asked area chefs to explore holiday foods from their own backgrounds, around the calendar and the globe. View their mouth-watering meals on page 66. Some prefer to savor celebrations away from home, and what better place to toast the holidays than in Napa Valley (page 80) or London (page 49)? December truly is a season of shimmer and sparkle, glamour, bubbles and special events, all of which are showcased throughout the issue. One new tradition for area grandparents will be taking grandchildren to the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples, which opens next year. In recognition of the role grandparents have played in the museum’s development, Saks Fifth Avenue and the museum are planning a special Donna Karan fashion event to introduce a special program at the museum for grandparents (page 119). It’s one of many events—new and traditional—marking the social and charitable season in Naples. Be sure to keep your planning on track with a visit to the comprehensive calendar at naplesillustrated.com, updated daily with new event information. No matter where or how you choose to celebrate, NI wishes you a festive season!

SOLE MAN Giuseppe Zanotti has a passion for shoes. Hailing from San Mauro Pascoli, in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, he grew up around the craft of shoe manufacturing, which was ubiquitous in his hometown. He chose a different path at first—he was a DJ and zealous consumer of both music and the night scene—but his eye for design eventually claimed his interest. A self-proclaimed adorer of women’s feet, he concentrated on creating shoes that turned heads and made women feel sexy and confident. His rise was meteoric, and now Zanotti is counted among the world’s top shoe designers, creating masterpieces for both the red carpet and the street. He spoke with NI during a recent appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue, Boca Raton. —Daphne Nikolopoulos

NI: Why shoes? ZANOTTI: Why not? (laughs) When I see women’s feet, I can imagine how to cover and discover. When I started in the ’80s, I wanted to create sexy, very feminine shoes for women. I like femininity and sex appeal, but not in a vulgar way. [Zanotti shoes] have that balance. You once created a shoe with a crystal-studded fishbone on the Tstrap. Where do you get the inspiration for things like that? During winter, on the beach in Romagna there are a lot of fish. I was in this restaurant and ordered fish, and I looked at the fish bone and thought it would be nice to do a sandal. So I sketched it on a napkin. That’s how I design shoes, organically. I never know when inspiration comes. 28 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

You’ve famously declared you adore women’s feet. Where does that fascination come from? My father was an artisan for ice cream, but my mother was a tailor. The ladies would come to our house to try the clothing, and I remember seeing this pair of pointy pumps in pearl gray with a thin heel that I thought was so sexy. That one pump was a universe for me. It sparked something. What do you consider your most outrageous design? Sometimes we like the challenge of “mission impossible.” Last season we did this bootie with 600 LED lights, like fireworks. We sent it to Japan to have the lights done, then I put eight pairs into production. Rihanna wore one for a performance.

How high is too high? When you do something that’s dangerous, it’s better [not to] do. We do four and a half, five inches. I cannot do something more. What is the perfect shoe? When a woman feels [beautiful] in the shoes, when they fit well, when they are sexy but not so much. … For myself, I’m never satisfied. [Perfection] is an illusion. What do you do for fun? I play music with old records, and I visit antique markets. I like women’s jewels from the ’30s, old watches and ceramics. The culture from the ’30s fascinates me. ◆

CHAIN REACTION Jeweler David Yurman exemplifies classic American elegance. He started his career selling small sculptures in his high school cafeteria, and founded his company in 1980. Today he caters to such celebrities as Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Rosario Dawson and Kate Hudson, and uses supermodels, including Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, in advertising campaigns. Yurman has 18 boutiques in 10 states, plus four overseas. For his new women’s collection, the designer incorporates rare stones, including blue topaz, moon quartz and pink opal. The men’s collection is more rugged, with rubber weaves and cord chains. Yurman will make a personal appearance from noon to 2 p.m. December 8 at Saks Fifth Avenue in Waterside Shops after a private breakfast to benefit the American Cancer Society, with 10 percent of Yurman sales that day benefiting the charity. —Jenna Choate

IDOL HOURS

Since she finished a close second in season three of American Idol at the age of 16, singer Diana DeGarmo has blossomed in the world of musical theater, playing roles on Broadway, Off Broadway, and in regional productions of West Side Story, Hairspray, Brooklyn: The Musical and others. Currently she is starring as Doralee Rhodes in a national tour of 9 to 5: The Musical, based on the Dolly Parton film. The show plays at the Philharmonic Center, Naples, December 27-January 2. —Andrea Bosco ■ YOU’RE STARRING IN THE ROLE PLAYED IN THE FILM BY DOLLY PARTON. ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT PERFORMING AS HER CHARACTER? Well, it’s Dolly Parton’s show. It’s going to be a good time. It’s music that I already know. “Backwoods Barbie” is one of her personal songs, and I already knew it before rehearsing. It’s great to be able to sing it every single night. ■ YOU MADE YOUR DEBUT AT THE GRAND OLE OPRY AT 12 YEARS OLD. WHAT IS IT LIKE WHEN YOU RETURN TO NASHVILLE TO PERFORM? It’s really exciting to open 9 to 5 [there]. It really proves that everything comes back full circle. It’s funny how things come back around to the beginning, right where you started. That can be good and bad. But for this, I’m really fortunate. I’m excited to take this show on the road and spread Dolly’s love. ■ WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO VACATION? I haven’t been on a vacation in a very long time. But I love going down to the Gulf. I’ve been going there since I was a kid. If I was having a bad day, my mom and I would pack up and drive down to the Panhandle, spend the weekend on the beach and then have me home by Sunday night for school the next morning. We called it “DeGarmo weekends”! I’m super-excited to come to Naples. It’s my first time.

For the 2011 series, Borman has moved the program to The Ritz-Carlton, Naples and doubled the speaker budget. The nearly sold-out program features speakers Frank Abagnale, Sarah Palin, Rudy Giuliani and Anderson Cooper. Next Borman plans to replicate the formula with the introduction of the Marco Town Hall Speaker Series. A GOOD RUN Giving back has brought Adam English full circle. A financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, English was one of the Gulf Coast Runners’ (GCR) first scholarship recipients in 1999. The money helped fund his education at Purdue University. Today English serves as the track and cross-country coach at Barron Collier High School. He sponsors several GCR events that benefit the organization’s Youth Development Program. This year, GCR awarded 16 Collier County high school graduates $30,000 in scholarship money. “The running community gave so much to me when I was a young athlete,” English says. “I am lucky to be able to share my passion and knowledge of running with these kids. I hope I impact their lives so they can be successful at any profession they choose.” —C.W.

ROOM FOR WINE Imagine a college course where students destined for a career in the hospitality industry taste different wines in a state-of-the-art tasting room on campus, designed to be the best environment in which to evaluate wines. At Florida Gulf Coast University, there is such a course, and such a tasting room. Wine for Hospitality Majors is taught by adjunct professor Ted Hudgins, a Naples tax attorney and also a Culinary Institute of America graduate and former chef. He worked with Sherie Brezina, director of FGCU’s Resort & Hospitality Management School, to develop the tasting classroom. “Sherie and I went to different schools and programs,” Hudgins says. “This is a lot like the CIA Greystone [Napa Valley] facility.” The room includes spittoons, a ledge for glasses (Riedel, of course), special lighting, and a wine storage room. The class is designed to introduce future food and beverage directors to wine marketing; the wine is bought from wholesalers or donated. Hudgins and Brezina have additional plans for the room, which opened in June and is used currently for one class a week, including wine classes for the university’s Renaissance Academy, industry tastings and community functions.

When Hurricane Ivan wiped out her business, Second Hand Rose, in Pensacola, Sonja Tilley and her husband, Dick, bought Audrey’s Attic on Tenth Street North in Naples. That was six years ago. This summer they moved the furniture into one room and used the additional space to create Tea With Me at Audrey’s, a charming Victorian tearoom, complete with antiques, silver plate, china cups and saucers, and feminine touches. Tea is in Tilley’s blood; she’s English, after all. But she’s also an innovative businesswoman, and she saw an opportunity when the real estate market—as well as sales of consignment furniture at Audrey’s Attic—fell off. It was the opportunity to pursue a dream—opening a tea room and using her background in catering. “I’ve tried to stay as English as possible and keep it simple,” she says. Lunch includes sandwiches, fresh sweets, tea and scones Tilley makes daily.

LOVE AFFAIR Naples has had a love affair with Norman Love (below) for years. Love served as executive pastry chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples from 1991 to 1994 before becoming the Ritz-Carlton corporate executive pastry chef for 13 years. In 2001 he opened his own business in Fort Myers, always with the idea of expanding to Naples, where he has remained involved in many charity events. By early next year, Love will open a store in Parkshore Plaza next to the restaurant USS Nemo, with a complete selection of artisanal chocolates, pastries, desserts, baked goods, Italian gelato, specialty coffees and smoothies. With the opening of the Naples store, the Bonita Bay Bicycle Club—which regularly rides to Love’s Fort Myers store for coffee and chocolate croissants—will have another destination.

RAISE A GLASS WELCOME 2011 WITH A BOTTLE (OR TWO) OF ONE OF OUR FAVORITE BUBBLIES. BY MARK SPIVAK

There’s an old tradition that whatever you eat and drink on New Year’s Eve will determine your fortunes in the year to come. There’s no evidence to back this up, of course, but it does present a compelling case for popping open your best bottle as the clock strikes midnight. Connoisseurs of Champagne are constantly revisiting the vintage versus nonvintage debate. Many think that vintage is better, since the grapes come from a year that was supposedly good enough to stand on its own. There’s another theory that

nonvintage Champagne actually tends to be superior, since the blend of many different years makes a more complex and interesting wine. Currently, it’s possible to find vintage Champagne from 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002 in the marketplace, with insiders giving the nod to 1996 and 1998. When it comes to the luxury cuvées, however, no such argument exists. These are the top expressions of a Champagne house, produced from the finest grapes in the best possible years. They are expensive, made in small quantities and sometimes hard to find. Here are our picks for that special bottle to start the year off on the right foot: ❉ Pommery Cuvée Louise 1998 ($150) and Rosé 1999 ($180) The regular cuvée is luscious and complex, with flavors of minerals, citrus and crushed hazelnuts. The rosé is virtually perfect—intense and persistent, with a haunting red berry essence. ❉ Perrier-Jouët Fleur de Champagne 2002 ($175) and Rosé ($275) The regular bottling is rich and profound, displaying great depth of flavor in its layers of brioche, vanilla and toast. The rosé is even better, highlighted by flavors of strawberry, raspberry and hints of roses. ❉ Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes d’Or 1998 ($125) Full-bodied and powerful, with flavors of melon, stewed peaches, crème brûlée and allspice. It blossoms with food, gaining depth and amplitude, and pairs well with a wide range of both continental and Asian dishes. ❉ Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires 1995 ($180) This blanc de blancs (made entirely from Chardonnay) is rich yet refreshing, with beautifully penetrating acidity and layers of lemon, custard apple and ripe melon. Balanced, elegant and seductive, it’s everything you want a Champagne to be.

46 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

❉ Krug Grande Cuvée ($150) Connoisseurs may pay stratospheric prices for their Clos de Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay bottling, but Grande Cuvée is the cornerstone of the house of Krug. Referred to as “multi-vintage” rather than nonvintage, it contains Champagne from as many as 10 or 12 vintage years, fermented in small oak casks before undergoing the second fermentation in the bottle. The result is an intense, zesty style best suited to accompany main dishes of fowl or game. Our Champagne of the year? Unquestionably it was the Dom Perignon Rosé, tasted with winemaker Vincent Chaperon. The 2000 ($400) has a pale salmon color and a yeasty nose with hints of red fruits. It is full-bodied and elegant in the mouth, with expansive flavors of wild strawberry and red raspberry. The most remarkable

There's no better way to start off a new year than by celebrating with a bottle of luxurious Champagne.

aspect is its long, haunting finish. As good as it is, the 2000 pales next to the 1990 Œnothèque Rosé ($900), a rerelease disgorged prior to entering the market this past fall. It has an amazing nose with whiffs of pastry dough, candied red berries, mushroom and truffle. It is intense and complex on the palate, with unfolding layers of rhubarb and red fruits and a finish that seems almost endless. ◆

pursuits FIRST CLASS PRIVATE LONDON There is nothing like a bit of jolly good hospitality to make Christmas merry. BY DAPHNE NIKOLOPOULOS

Few places feel as special as London during the holidays. There is something about the lights along Regent Street, the creatively dressed store windows, the magical displays at the 250-year-old toy shop Hamleys and the carolers at Trafalgar Square that ignite the Christmas spirit in even the most curmudgeonly Scrooge.

The warmth of the season, if not the weather, begs for a stay that feels more residential. This is when we like to check into London’s more intimate properties, the ones that feel like private clubs or gracious homes, with true personal attention and a house party atmosphere. The hotel 41—so named for its address, 41 Buckingham Palace Road—is high on that list. With only 30 rooms, each decorated in black and white but no two alike, and a clubby lounge that sits beneath a glass roof, the place feels like a secret hideaway for those who cherish privacy. At first, 41 looks like a typical old-world London club. You take the elevator to the fifth floor, over which the entire hotel is spread, and come to a lounge with all the requisite elements—the button-tufted leather club chairs, the wood-paneled library, the fireplace—that give an immediate sense of place. But then you wander about and raise an eyebrow at an original Matisse (the hotel has quite a collection of original art), the candles floating in your personal bathtub and the riot of black-and-white patterns brought together in an eclectic but chic way. And then there’s the service. The staffto-guest ratio is two to one, and it shows. The staff here act more like personal attendants, and they stand ready to serve—a classically English trait. It is not unusual to have a member of staff prepare a childfriendly picnic prior to a family outing, or serve Champagne just because, or draw a romantic bath at turndown—all without being asked. The service so intuitive that it 50 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

The lounge at 41, always an ideal spot for breakfast, tea or cocktails, is especially festive for Christmas.

truly makes the entire experience. For Christmas, 41 is trimmed with all the holiday finery and entices guests with its two-night “Magical London” package, which even includes Christmas trees in the suites and stuffed stockings for those in residence during Christmas Eve. One of the pleasures during the festive season is taking cocktails and canapés in front of the fire, or enjoying a late-night hot chocolate and lavish snack in the lounge. A unique element at 41 is its nightly spread of nibbles and drinks, and its invitation to “plunder the pantry” anytime the desire arises. It’s one of many reasons the place feels like a home away from home. The 41 is one of several Red Carnation Hotels, whose portfolio also includes The

Chesterfield in Palm Beach. RCH offers similar holiday packages at its other London properties. One of the most impressive is The Milestone Hotel at Kensington Court, another boutique hotel with unsurpassed service. The Milestone Hotel, known for its high-concept design (the Safari Suite, with its tented ceiling, is especially fabulous) and 24-hour butler service, is a jewel box at Christmastime. Ethereal blue lights decorate the entrance and gilded holiday decor enhances the already posh surroundings, which are a symphony of opulent fabrics, antiques, original art and crystal chandeliers. It’s like luxuriating in a cocoon of comfort and joy, with your every whim catered to. Who could ask for a better gift? (41hotel.com, milestonehotel.com) ◆

PRECIOUS METAL INFINITI’S POTENT NEW M56 SPORTS SEDAN OFFERS TRUE SILVER SERVICE BY HOWARD WALKER

There are luxury cars. And there is luxury in cars. Take Infiniti’s new M56 flagship. The Japanese white ash used in the interior woodwork is nothing less than gorgeous. But its designers really wanted the wood to sparkle. So for every piece of trim, they grind silver into fine particles and sprinkle it like pixie dust over the grain before adding a lakedeep coating of varnish. The result is a subtle, sexy shimmer that absolutely pops when sunlight hits it. This new M also displays its luxury in a multitude of technical ways—like its so-called Forest Air system. Sensors detect nasty odors, like exhaust fumes, hot rubber and Giorgio Beverly Hills, and quickly close intake flaps. And any air coming into the cabin is filtered more thoroughly than a White House job applicant. Luxury is about hushed silence too, which is why the new M56 comes with a clever system called Active Noise Control. Using the same technology as those Bose noise-canceling headphones, it quiets engine boom, tire roar and mothers-inlaw in the backseat. Certainly the new M needs every gizmo it can muster to stand tall in today’s highly capable luxury sports sedan crowd. There are no weaklings here, with the new BMW 5 Series, latest Mercedes E-Class, Jaguar XF and Audi A6 keeping the bar high. 52 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

But perhaps that’s the real appeal of this new $60,000 M56—you’re unlikely to see another wafting down Third Street South, or idling serenely in the valet line at The RitzCarlton. One thing’s for sure; this is a car that will turn heads and get you noticed. See it in the metal, and the swoops and twists of its body are like a roller-coaster ride for the eyes. Check the box to order up the Sport package and your M56 will come with the most stunning set of 20-inch alloy rims and a subtle yet distinctive body kit to complement the car’s nuclear-like power plant nestled under that curvy hood. And the beauty continues when you open the door and slide behind the wheel. The finest glove-soft, hand-stitched and piped leather covers the seats and dash. Lining the roof is a material that looks and feels more like suede than the real thing.

As the badge on the back suggests, power comes from a 5.6-liter V-8 that generates a towering 420 horsepower—60 more than BMW’s benchmark 550i and a whopping 95 more than Infiniti’s last-generation M45. Connected to a smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic, this mighty motor will punch the M from rest to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. That’s as fast as the testosterone-fueled 500-horse BMW M5. Yet, impressively, it can still average 25 miles to the gallon on a road trip. But it does have its quirky side. In a bid to compete with the German meisters, BMW and Mercedes, Infiniti has gone slightly overboard with technology. While much of it is brilliant in theory, some of it becomes downright annoying in practice. When you opt for the $3,000 Technology package, for example, the car comes equipped with the world’s first Blind Spot Intervention system. This uses sensors and alarms to warn if you start to stray into another lane. If you ignore it, then it will work the brakes on one side to pull you away from the danger on the other.

So far so good. But the system is such a scaredy cat that the thing is constantly dinging and flashing warning lights. Because it works in conjunction with Blind Spot Warning, there are even more dings and flashes every time another car gets close to entering your blind zone. There’s a simple solution here—skip the package. Without it, this stylish new Infiniti becomes a powerful and hugely appealing contender in the luxury sports sedan sector of the market. While it may not be the gold standard, just like the wood on its dash, this new M56 gleams with silver. ◆

Persian Bistro, remembers celebrating the winter solstice in Iran, a food holiday full of symbols and traditions, especially the fight between good and evil. On the longest night of the year, the symbolic battle is dark versus light, winter versus spring. Families huddle around a low table called a korsi and eat, usually things saved from the harvest, like pomegranates, apples, dried fruits and nuts. Throughout the night they share stories. “It’s the duty of the elders to make the night shorter by passing stories,” Mir says. The next day, the children speculate on who won, the lady of winter or light, by the weather that day. Rain means winter is weeping over her loss, snow means she was so mad she pulled out her hair, and hail means she broke her pearl necklace. 66 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Rabbit and porcini mushrooms are celebrated in Bormio, Lombardy, in October.

Oranges are celebrated in this salad with olives, and in Agrigento, Sicily, in April.

Sicilian-born Vincenzo Betulia, executive chef at Campiello Ristorante, says Italians not only have specific foods associated with each holiday, they also celebrate special holidays, or sagre, designed to exalt specific foods. The food festivals vary by region and season, and are often associated with saints’ days. “A lot are in September and October, and they are all about food, Betulia says. Some celebrations last several days to a week, and include a market and festival, games, soccer tournaments and family gatherings. Betulia appreciates that festivals highlighting individual ingredients spotlight the rustic simplicity of many Italian favorites, like peaches baked in a stone oven with a little butter and sugar; suckling pig roasted in olive oil; and oranges and olives in a salad. Le Réveillon When it comes to Christmas, the French are steeped in tradition. On Christmas Eve, it’s traditional to serve a whole duck. Then, “You eat, you drink, you eat, you drink,” says Jacques Cariot, owner of Bleu Provence with his wife, chef Lysielle. “When you can’t drink any more, you drink and then recover until New Year’s Eve, when you do the same.” Foie gras, oysters, scallops, smoked salmon and a bird of some kind, like a goose, are traditional. “It’s always big, and family,” he says. The host for the annual gathering is determined by skill. “In France, we avoid the bad cook,” Jacques says. “The best cook wins.” In the province where Lysielle grew up, it was considered good luck to serve 13 desserts at the end of dinner—fruits, almonds, nuts and chocolate.

Top left: The season for Perigord’s black truffles and Brittany sea scallops begins in December; both are symbols of special holidays in France. Coquilles St. Jacques features diver scallops with black truffles, served with young vegetables and butter sauce. Top right: Warm oysters with curry and apples. In France, oyster season is just four months ending in December. Christmas Eve dinner is a good opportunity to feature them. Bottom: It is hard to conceive a Christmas dinner without a Bûche de Noël, a Christmas log cake, as a finale in France. If not, French gourmands would probably take to the street to spark another revolution, says Jacques Cariot. 70 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Canard à l’Orange, roasted duck with orange sauce, is a traditional Christmas Eve dinner in France. At Bleu Provence, the Canard à l’Orange recipe was chosen for the lightness and sweetness of its sauce, which suits a rich, multiple-course dinner well.

Nochebuena In Spain, celebrations vary by region, so Isabel Pozo Polo of I.M. Tapas created dishes that reflect various regions. Pozo Polo was born in Cuba, but grew up outside of Madrid. Most of the Spanish celebration is on Christmas Eve. “It’s a big family holiday with the entire family,” she says. “Usually there’s a lot of wine and talk about politics and religion, which is not a happy occasion at times. But at the end of the day with so much wine, it’s happy.” Usually the festivities start after attending mass and last through the night. Gifts are exchanged on Three Kings Day, or the Epiphany, in January. ◆ DECEMBER 2010 73

Christmas Collectors PATTY AND JAY CAMPBELL FILL THEIR HOME WITH TREASURES AND TRADITIONS TO CELEBRATE THE SEASON. BY KATHY BECKER • PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK SHIRGHIO

I

f holiday fantasy were to become reality the way it does each season in The Nutcracker ballet, the Campbell family would have another 27 guests at their table, with their collection of Steinbach and Christian Ulbricht nutcrackers. There would be no problem, though, because they have enough Spode Christmas china to serve 150 people. 74 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

It’s all part of a Campbell tradition that starts in November with nearly two weeks of decorating, followed by festive celebrations with family and friends. Patty Campbell, division president, GL Homes of Florida, has been a collector most of her life, so it was no surprise that acquiring her first Steinbach nutcracker nearly 15 years ago would lead to more, usually one a

year plus those she receives as gifts. Characters from A Christmas Carol to The Phantom of the Opera to Titanic are interpreted as nutcrackers. They stand at attention along the tops of door moldings in the entryway of the home where the Campbells have lived for six years. Patty and her daughter, Eva, 10, go to see The Nutcracker every year, never tiring of the beloved classic.

Even Jay and Patty Campbell’s Volkswagen Thing is decorated at their festive holiday home. DECEMBER 2010 75

The tree in the family room, one of six or eight trees put up each year, features a sweet treat theme.

76 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Having a house filled with decorations from top to bottom is a tradition that started with Patty’s mother, Mary Jane Grosclaude, who lives in a guesthouse on the property. They help each other decorate, continuing traditions that run in the family, including with Patty’s sister, Eva Grosclaude. Each year, many decorations grace the same places, but the women also come up with some innovations. In 2009, Patty put up only six of her usual eight trees. “Now I feel guilty,” she says. Sills along the windows on the back of the house proved the perfect spots for wooden Santas and evergreen trees. Patty also put battery-powered lights on their 1974 Volkswagen Thing, the perfect beach ride, with its blue-and-white awning-striped top. The Campbells went to Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar for dinner and “someone in a Ferrari was taking pictures of our Thing,” Patty says. “It’s so Florida.” The house, however, is very traditional, with antique fixtures, glass doorknobs and classic furniture. Most of the decorations are traditional too. The sitting room tree is loaded with German glass and Christopher Radko ornaments that represent places the family has been or things that

they like. One of Jay’s favorite decorations is a 100-year-old reverse glass painting that belonged to his grandmother, an engagement gift from his parents. A nearly century-old antique clock shares the mantel with silk evergreens and smaller European glass ornaments that Patty’s sister-in-law gives her every year. “The house is very traditional,” Patty says. “I’ve been this way forever. When I was 24, I bought the couch in the sitting area. I’ve been collecting since I was young.” The tree in the family room features ornaments of gumdrops, cookies and gingerbread, and like most collections, the ornament assortment has grown through the years. “We started when the kids were little with a six-and-a-half-foot tree,” Patty says. “Now we have a nine-foot tree.” Tree decorations in the kitchen reflect a tradition Patty started in recognition of Jay’s last name when they began dating. “Jay and I dated for six years before we got married,” Patty says. “I started collecting Campbell’s Soup ornaments.”

Left: Patty Campbell and her daughter Eva host a mother-daughter Christmas tea. Above: Jay and Patty Campbell. Above right: The sitting room tree with German glass and Radko ornaments. Right: Stockings hung by the chimney with care.

DECEMBER 2010 77

Jay was already a fan of the holiday season when he met Patty, and helps each year with the efforts. “Luckily, I already liked the holidays before we met,” Jay says. “It brings good cheer.” Even each bedroom gets a themed tree. A tree decorated in blue and white porcelain in the master bedroom matches the blue and white decor. Son Pearce, 12, has a tree in his room with bears and fishing-related and outdoor-themed ornaments. Daughter Eva’s room features a tree decked out with ballerinas, lipsticks, shoes, purses, Barbie dolls and other girlish fancies.

After so many years of decorating, Patty has the system down to a science, right down to wrapping each breakable ornament in toilet paper for storage. Still, she has one or two casualties a year. “I have a pretty good survival rate,” she says. The important part of their efforts is sharing their festive home with friends and family. Each year, Patty has a Christmas tea for her daughter, her friends and their mothers. The Campbells host a neighborhood party every year, and many family holiday gatherings. “If you go through all this, you have to have parties too,” she says. ◆

Vintner WONDERLAND CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH 12 DAYS OF NAPA. BY ROBERT RAGAINI

The December holidays in California’s wine country are a glittering gift of wine and food. Vineyard tours, tastings, award-winning chefs’ cuisine, gorgeous countryside, Golden State-style shopping—there are many reasons to be merry. Hillside Haven Eighty-five cottages, suites and lodges settle into the hills above the valley that is home to the Meadowood Napa Valley. It serves as a luxurious base for area excursions, although it does offer many compelling reasons to stay put. 80 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

The Meadowood suite, with fine Italian linens enveloping a supremely comfortable bed and a cozy fieldstone fireplace dominating the living room, nearly entices one to cancel plans and settle in with a good book. Other reasons to remain at Meadowood include wonderful massages at the spa, hiking and biking in the woods, tennis, and golf. Meadowood also has croquet courts, and guests can take a lesson from the resort’s instructors. Tempting as it is to settle in at the resort, there is much to see and do elsewhere. In a vast aging room, where oak barrels line sweeping walls, Cade partner John Conover says, “There are 250 feet of earth above us.” This is a unique winery, Napa Valley’s first organically farmed, LEED Gold Certified Winery. cadewinery.com In Oakville, stop at boutique winery Saddleback Cellars. Owner Nils Venge is famous among his friends for his obsession with cowboys, as is clearly evident in the winery decor. Among enophiles, he’s known as the winemaker whose 1985 Cabernet was the first in America to win 100 points from Robert Parker. saddlebackcellars.com “Christmas is mellow,” says an unhurried pourer in the Duckhorn Vineyards tasting room in St. Helena. The estate wines are labeled with paintings of owner Dan Duckhorn’s favorite fowl. The winery bottles Bordeaux varietals that reflect his appreciation for Merlot and influences of St. Emilion and Pomerol. duckhorn.com Terra Valentine takes winemaking to new heights—about 2,100 feet above the valley. The winery mixes a state-of-the-art fermentation system with a beautiful, artisan-constructed building in Spring Mountain. terravalentine.com Long Meadow Ranch, also in St. Helena, produces both award-winning wine and delectable organic farm products. Chris Hall proudly shows off his family’s Farmstead Restaurant. The

Nearby Oakdale is tiny, but does have its claim to fame—the upscale Grocery Store, selling wine, fresh produce and artisan breads. In Rutherford, there’s a grange hall welcoming all to a countrystyle breakfast and farmers’ market. Vine and Dine A century and a half after George Yount planted his first grapevines in Napa Valley, chef Thomas Keller bought a 17-table restaurant in Yountville he named The French Laundry, which turned into a Michelin three-star phenomenon. Bouchon, his nearby bistro, earned him another star. ( frenchlaundry.com, bouchonbistro.com) In downtown Napa, the valley’s only real city, lunch at the Bank Café & Bar, which sports a Michelin star of its own, is a must. latoque.com/bankbar.html In St. Helena, massive stone walls

distinguish Market (marketsthelena.com), with equally impressive service and delicious dishes like wild salmon in a light ginger-citrus sauce. Other dining options include Wine Spectator Greystone, a restaurant of the Culinary Institute of America, and Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen, which serves “Mighty Meatloaf” in the bar/dining room, where locals hang out. (ciachef.edu, cindysbackstreetkitchen.com) The Martini House in St. Helena serves a unique menu of dishes that incorporate wild, foraged ingredients, like a multicourse mushroom and vegetable tasting. martinihouse.com Dining at Meadowood also is first-rate. Chef Christopher Kostow and his staff oversee The Restaurant at Meadowood, the only eating establishment in Napa Valley with two Michelin stars. Meadowood’s annual Twelve Days of

Christmas features a dozen chefs collaborating with Napa Valley’s preeminent vintners to present 12 holiday feasts. On the twelfth day the chef is Kostow, one of Food & Wine ’s “Best New Chefs” of 2009. What does he think makes a great chef? “The essential thing is to be able to collect information, organize and use it,” Kostow says. “And that you have to learn. Being able to create new and wonderful tastes? That might be a bit innate.” Kostow certainly has what it takes. For the twelfth night, he crafts Tasmanian ocean trout with foie gras, poached capon and white truffles, charred Wagyu beef, Stilton cheesecake and dark chocolate terrine, accompanied by perfectly matched wines. The evening provides a festive wrap for the gift of the holidays in Napa Valley. (meadowood.com, napavalley.org, sthelena.com) ◆

GLAMOROUS GRANDMAS

Linda Malone, Joan Loos, Sheila Smith Davis, Carol Lund, Simone Lutgert and Marquelda Jones are just some of the grandparents helping to build the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples, expected to open in 2011. Museum Capital Campaign Chair Lutgert—selected this year to be a first-ever Donna Karan ambassador in celebration of the designer’s twenty-fifth anniversary—has named the museum her charity of choice. The first of two Karan events is Grand Dreams, a luncheon and Donna Karan fashion presentation at Saks Fifth Avenue in Waterside Shops December 15 to celebrate grandparents and launch the museum’s special grandparent membership level. Another fashion event for the museum will be held in the spring. For

DECEMBER 2010

The Ritz-Carlton, Naples celebrates its anniversary with John Tesh.

SHARK SHOOTOUT The world’s top 24 professional golfers will end their regular season 2010 PGA Tour in Naples with the twenty-second Shark Shootout, open to the public December 8-12. World Golf Hall of Fame member Greg Norman hosts the event at the Tiburón Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, which features two of his specially designed 18-hole courses. The golfers are divided into 12 two-man teams, including defending champions Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker. The competition will be organized in a mixed format, with Friday dedicated to modified alternate shot and Saturday to better ball. Sunday, the final round, will be a scramble. The tournament, sponsored by Merrill Lynch, will benefit the CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation, which funds the Children’s Oncology Group, the largest cancer research organization in the world. SILVER SONGS

The Shark Shootout returns to Tiburón this month.

Musician and media personality John Tesh will perform original compositions, popular instrumentals and more at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples December 4 as part of the hotel’s twenty-fifth anniversary celebration. Tesh’s program includes holiday music as well. “It’s hard to choose a favorite,” he says. “I love the classics, but I also love the songs from A Charlie Brown Christmas. But the show will be more than just me performing songs. It’s like a variety show—there will be hip-hop dance interpretations and inspirational stories told throughout the show.” The hotel offers John Tesh Live Concert Packages, including a Champagne reception and show with general admission seating; Champagne reception, show and dessert reception with middle section seating; and a Silver Package with dinner, show and dessert reception with premier front section seating. Special room rates are available as well. Call The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, 239-598-6644, for more information. —Storm Heitman

HEALING TALE Naples resident and author Lander Duncan, son of a mixed-race mother and African American father, has published an intimate autobiographical novel, Children of Secrets. The book tells the story of his life after his father was lynched in the Arkansas Delta in 1948. It documents childhood horrors, including his mother’s severe mental illness, and his triumphant success over all. Duncan will be the featured speaker at the annual luncheon for NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, December 3 at the Hilton Naples. His goal in writing the book was to give readers “a sense that perhaps it is in our own way that we have to come to the water’s edge. … I want readers to come away with a sense of forgiveness and know that you can meet your goals if you are given an opportunity,” Duncan says. “It seemed like a great story to tell because my siblings and I came out of the ashes of all of the violence and we made something of ourselves.” Duncan has donated 100 hardcover books to NAMI for the luncheon and will sign copies. For a fundraising event that is “heels above the rest,” the Education Foundation of Collier County presents the eighth annual If the Shoe Fits, sponsored by Naples Illustrated and Saks Fifth Avenue, December 1 at Saks in Waterside Shops. “We are fortunate to have [the support of our sponsors] to help provide our Take Stock in Children students with college scholarships and a program that supports them every step of the way through high school and prepares them to succeed in college and life,” says Susan McManus, president of the Education Foundation. This girls’ night out includes shopping, auction and raffle prizes, hors d’oeuvres, wine, cocktails and recognition of this year’s recipient of the Glass Slipper Award, honoring a deserving woman for her dedication and commitment to Collier County children. Kathleen Passidomo is the 2010 recipient. The event will feature regional artists, including Tampa-based Mark Schwartz of High Heeled Art, Naples jewelry designer Amanda Jaron, and Fort Myers clay artist JoAnne Bedient, who provides the Glass Slipper Award. PAIGE MILES FROM AMERICAN IDOL

There’s no better way to celebrate the holidays in the tropics than with Southwest Florida’s annual boat parades. Twenty-one years ago, the Marine Industries Association of Collier County (MIACC) turned a small Christmas boat parade into an official fundraising event for the entire community. This year’s MIACC Christmas Boat Parade on Naples Bay is December 11. “The boats are amazingly decorated,” says Frank Perrucci, president of MIACC. “Some follow the theme of the year, and some choose not to, but they are all beautiful.” The theme this year is Holiday Rock & Roll. Although entry is free, MIACC asks boaters and viewers to donate to the Ricky King Fund, a local foundation that provides support for the unmet financial medical needs of Southwest Florida children and their families. For more information: 239-682-0900, miacc.org. This year’s twenty-fifth annual Bonita Springs Holiday Boat Parade along Imperial River is also set for December 11 (239-248-0955), and The Village on Venetian Bay Boat Parade is December 9 (239-403-2204). —Jane Luer
