GIVING FOR GOOD The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties leads philanthropy locally, connecting donors to our network of trusted nonprofit partners on the front lines of our area’s greatest challenges. From mental health to housing, education to early literacy, our mission is to strengthen our communities to make our area safer, healthier and prosperous for all. Last year alone, we distributed over $16 million in donor-directed and competitive grants to over 550 changemaking organizations and helped over 100 local students attend college through $1.2 million in scholarships. You can transform the causes closest to your heart here — and anywhere — by giving to, through, or with the Community Foundation. Jeffrey A. Stoops, Chair of the Board of Directors Danita R. On the cover Each year, the editorial staff at Palm Beach Media Group considers the work of local artists to appear on the cover of the Palm Beach Charity Register, a tradition that highlights our vibrant local arts community. This year, we selected a piece from West Palm Beach–based artist Anthony Burks Sr.’s “Natural Beauty” series. Burks created the image, titled Nicole Escalara, using charcoal, watercolor, and colored pencils on watercolor paper. A native Floridian, Burks is a conceptual fine and commercial artist. He works in numerous forms of media including charcoal, pen and ink, pastel, watercolor, and colored pencil. The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale graduate has won awards and contests including “Best of Show” in several art shows. “Whether choosing a bird, animal, or beautiful woman as a subject, diversity is achieved by incorporating into my art bright colors and abstract images,” Burks says. “The goal is for the audience to be as free in viewing the work as I am in creating it.” (anthonyburkscollection.com)

FROM THE PUBLISHER

n the summer of 2022, we received a call from a friend of this magazine and one of our Palm Beach 100 honorees, Eric Roby. He had recently taken on the role of executive director of the American Red Cross for the Palm Beach and Treasure Coast Chapter, and he was keen to add someone from the media to their board of directors. Being newly transplanted from Miami to Palm Beach County, I was happy to oblige and give back to my new community. Since joining the board of the Red Cross, I have become well versed in the organization’s mission and the services it provides. And, the need is great. In the last 10 years, the number of billion-dollar disasters has increased by 70 percent. Organizations such as the Red Cross are supporting more and more communities including Maui, the Southwest, the Big Bend region of Florida, tornado-ravaged areas of Mississippi, and other locations across the country. In our own backyard, the Red Cross is ready to respond to hurricanes and other natural disasters—especially since Category 4 and 5 hurricanes have become more frequent threats to our shores in the last five years than in the previous 50. Over 31 years, the Palm Beach Charity Register has become a resource for philanthropists to find groups that address all manner of challenges. From classes that teach children with autism to swim to after-school programs for at-risk kids and ongoing day-care for seniors, the information in these pages can provide an introduction to a service or an organization where you can help make a difference. The need is great, and we appreciate our partners and our readers for supporting this publication and the wonderful groups that it profiles. The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties is one of our longtime partners in this effort. We are so pleased to have them as the presenting sponsor of this thirty-first edition of the Palm Beach Charity Register. We are grateful for their support.

“W

hen I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers,’” TV personality Fred Rogers writes in his book, Mister Rogers Talks with Parents. “‘You will always find people who are helping.’” That sentiment rings especially true here in Palm Beach County—not only during our monthslong social season filled with chic charitable events, but in all seasons. Year-round, there are hundreds of local helpers working to create a veritable social safety net that helps make the Palm Beaches a palmstudded paradise for residents from all walks of life, backgrounds, and income levels. Read up on four local organizations making a difference—from Path to College’s initiative to connect kids and colleges (page 28), to The Lord’s Place’s culinary transitional work experience program (page 30), to Compass Community Center’s LGBTQ+ safe spaces (page 32), to the West Palm Beach Library Foundation’s programming for students, seniors, and everyone in between (page 34). Beyond groups that move the needle on local needs, Sam Kerrigan’s “Everyday Heroes” (page 50) profiles Palm Beach County individuals who are finding new and creative ways to lend a helping hand. With the social season upon us, it’s not only time to start filling our calendars with events (page 105), but to plan our perfectly Palm Beach wardrobes. For go-to glam beauty, peruse “Season Essentials” (page 24), where we highlight a handful of must-have makeup items. Or if you’re in the market for a piece of jewelry to put the finishing touch on your gala look, Mary Murray’s “Gem Garden” (page 44) showcases a sparkling selection of beautiful baubles. For the section of the Palm Beach Charity Register that locals use year after year as the definitive guide to the county’s most storied organizations and fundraising festivities, take time to page through our Charity Listings beginning on page 57. It’s more than just a compendium of 138 glamorous events; it’s also an opportunity to find a passion, serve a purpose, and give back with grace. Palm Beach’s social season offers a unique and time-honored way to break out your finest fashion finds, mingle with like-minded neighbors, and become a true helper in our community. I hope you find an organization (or two) that inspires you to attend an event, make a donation where you can, or donate your time and talents to elevate a local cause that speaks to you.

The Great Wealth Transfer BABY BOOMERS ARE BEGINNING TO TRANSFER A STAGGERING AMOUNT OF WEALTH TO FAMILY AND CHARITIES, CREATING TRANSFORMATIVE PHILANTHROPIC OPPORTUNITIES By Cathy Chestnut

Over the coming decades, baby boomers—the wealthiest generation in American history—will be passing the fruits of their prosperity to their children, grandchildren, and other beneficiaries. How much? An astounding $68 trillion (or more) in homes, businesses, and investments. Experts have coined this phenomenon the “Great Wealth Transfer,” and they predict it will fuel societal shifts and have a monumental impact in philanthropy. Community foundations are starting conversations in their regions to raise awareness about this wealth 26

transfer and the importance of including a philanthropic element in estate plans. If a percentage of that wealth is earmarked for charitable giving, it would be a game changer in communities across the nation. That’s why Ashley Heath Dietz, president and CEO of the Florida Philanthropic Network, has been traveling the state to talk with community, education, health, corporate, and family foundations and other grantmaking organizations about their plans for capturing a portion of this historic treasure to create endowments that will ensure long-term funding

for nonprofit programming. “It’s an exciting time,” she says. “One of the best things foundations can do is to be transparent about what the projected transfer will be in the next 10, 25, 50 years. For donors who want to leave a legacy in their community with those dollars, this is such a huge opportunity.” Palm Beach and Martin counties are projecting a $114 billion transfer from one generation to the next by 2030. Capturing 5 percent of that wealth could support around $6 billion in local grantmaking over the next 20 years, according to the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. In Collier County, $34.8 billion is expected to change hands over the next 10 years. Sums like these may seem staggering, so the Collier Community Foundation (CCF) is working to explain to the part-time and year-round residents in the greater Naples area that just 3 percent of those billions could result in a $1 billion endowment at CCF that would generate $50 million annually to address community needs. Dietz emphasizes that it’s not only wealthy individuals who can invest in a better future. Estate plans are key in life and death for everyone to ensure that their assets are distributed in accordance with their wishes and protected from time-consuming and costly probate. They are crucial if you become incapacitated and can no longer handle your affairs. Incorporating a charitable remainder trust into an estate plan is a savvy financial move: it can reduce or eliminate capital gains and reduce the size of a taxable estate. It provides income for a specified term, with the remainder passing to charity—a win-win. Benefactors have several investment options for supporting their favorite causes and passions at a community foundation: donoradvised funds, nonprofit funds, legacy planning, scholarships, and unrestricted funds. “Community foundations are such a trusted source between donors and the nonprofit community,” says Dietz. “They are the vehicle to be sure that money goes to the communities in need. As things shift and change in a community or a nonprofit, they can vet needs and be nimbler to shift funding.” «

Bridging the Gap PATH TO COLLEGE IGNITES COLLEGE AND CAREER POTENTIAL FOR LOWER-INCOME STUDENTS IN PALM BEACH COUNTY by Jesse Scott Getting into college is no small feat. Add in the barriers that disadvantaged students face, and the process becomes an even bigger task. Enter Path to College. Founded in 2017, the organization has built a slate of programming designed to help local students reach their academic and personal potential. What started as an idea hatched at the dining table of CEO and founder Christine Sylvain now boasts more than 100 students in its flagship academic fellowship program. Today, the organization attracts more than 200 volunteers a year to support its mission and reaches thousands of students annually via interactive community events. “We are fearlessly clearing the path for our lower-income students to get into the best colleges with the best scholarships possible,” says Sylvain. “We’ve had a skyrocket of growth recently and have made a really solid impact. Our secret sauce is that we bring in the community and build up a village of support around our students.” Key features of the Path to College aca28

demic fellowship program are professional career coaching and mentoring, college campus visits, scholarship assistance, application support, test prep classes, and more. The nonprofit also connects students with internships and hosts community-wide events, like its signature speed interview night, where students can fine-tune their interview skills. “Across the board, to have a professor or mentor be a cheerleader for you really makes such a difference,” says Sylvain. “That level of support is a differentiator in the landscape for students.” Among the mentors working with these leaders of tomorrow is Akanksha Kumar, director of IT products at MDLive, Inc. “As a

[Path to College] mentor, I want to help my students see themselves in a new light and bring out the best version of themselves,” she says. “It’s amazing to see them succeed and get into the college of their choice.” One of Kumar’s previous mentees is Chimdindu Ejidike, a Quest Bridge Scholar who is now attending Emory University as part of its class of 2027. “I’ve always had a bad habit of doubting myself,” Ejidike says. “My doubts had no chance against [my mentor, Akanskha], though. She was there every step of the way, encouraging and guiding me. I never once doubted her faith in me. Knowing that she believes in me and wants to see me succeed is truly a comforting feeling. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to meet such a wonderful soul like hers. The mentor/ mentee relationship I gained through Path to College will follow me for a lifetime.” (pathtocollege.org) «

TACKLING MEDICINE’S TOUGHEST CHALLENGES. Developing solutions to complex medical challenges demands a new way of thinking. At The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology, we lean into the hard problems, like finding treatments for aggressive cancers, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS. Our mission is to serve humanity by addressing the universe of untreatable diseases. As part of UF Health, the University of Florida’s academic health center, our goal is to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into innovative clinical advances.

Envisioning a cancer-free world Discovering new ways to treat the most aggressive cancers, including breast, brain, pancreatic, lung and others, requires innovation. We’re inventing ways to reawaken cancer’s ability to self-destruct. We’re finding new precision medicines and delivery systems like antibodies. And we’re investigating exactly what’s required for the immune system to find and destroy cancer.

A Second Helping THE LORD’S PLACE AND ITS CAFÉ JOSHUA AND JOSHUA CATERING FILL MORE THAN JUST LOCAL STOMACHS By Christiana Lilly When someone has spent time in prison, experienced homelessness, or worked to overcome substance abuse, they may feel judged at every turn. But at The Lord’s Place, everyone is given a second chance. “Some folks have this impression of what an ex-con might be like,” says Jim Collins, culinary director at The Lord’s Place. “These folks are diligent. … They’ll stay until the job gets done.” The West Palm Beach nonprofit supports those in need of a helping hand, including through its Culinary Transitional Work Experience program. Participants spend three or six months training in the Café Joshua kitchen or working at Joshua Catering. Collins says that a year after graduating, 80 percent of participants still have jobs. Visitors to Café Joshua can partake in a continental breakfast of baked goods and fruit or a four-course plated lunch. Collins says that guests are waited on and treated with respect. “It’s had an incredible impact on them,” he says. The same goes for the 30

interns working in the program’s state-ofthe-art kitchen. “When they do something really well, you can feel that their heart feels great, their mind feels great, their self-esteem is good,” Collins says. “We have high expectations. It’s all about respect, achievement, and teamwork.” With 40 years of culinary experience, Collins joined the team at The Lord’s Place in March as a way to give back. He replaced chef Robert Coleman, who died in October 2022. On the catering side, customers can order hot and cold breakfasts, appetizers, and lunches for 10 to 150 people. Each year, the catering team brings in about $250,000 to support The Lord’s Place. Collins says customers include private companies, nonprofits, school systems, and government agencies.

Ten years ago, Charles Hill needed a second chance after being released from prison. He went to The Lord’s Place and was offered an apprenticeship in the catering department. While shadowing another employee, he visited companies to educate them on Joshua Catering. Today, he works at the nonprofit’s Fortin Family Campus, where he greets visitors and connects them with resources and programs that can help them, whether that be housing, finding a job, rental assistance, accessing disability resources, or getting a bite to eat at Café Joshua. “[The Lord’s Place] helped show me that there was a different path than the one I continued to go down,” Hill says. “People need help. There are not enough agencies that are providing the assistance that people need, which is why The Lord’s Place is so deeply needed.” (thelordsplace.org) «

Safe Space FOR 35 YEARS, COMPASS COMMUNITY CENTER HAS BEEN A BEACON OF HOPE FOR PALM BEACH COUNTY’S LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY By Jesse Scott For Compass Community Center executive director and CEO Julie Seaver, the organization’s mission is personal. Nearly 25 years ago, she first came to the center as a client, attending its coming out support group. Flash-forward to 2023, Seaver is celebrating her sixteenth year as a Compass Community Center employee; she’s been at the organization’s helm since 2018. It’s a big year for the nonprofit, too, as it turns 35. “Every single department in this agency has been a huge part of saving people’s lives through the years, whether it’s youth struggling with sexual orientation or gender identity issues or, perhaps, an older gay man who lost his partner of 30 or 40 years [and is] struggling to find connection in community,” she says. “We are so proud of what we’ve accomplished, but there is still so much work left to be done.” Among Compass Community Center’s core programs are health services, social and support groups, mental health services, and business alliances (including management of a Pride Directory, detailing LGBTQ+-owned and -friendly businesses in Palm Beach County), as well as HIV testing and education. The programming has impacted thousands of locals. Among them is Mars Tran, a 23-yearold HIV-positive Asian American transgender 32

man. He first attended Compass Youth Group when he was 16 and, through the relationships he built at Compass, came to understand and celebrate his identity and start his medical transition. “In 2022, I was diagnosed with HIV,” he says. “My diagnosis [marked] the beginning of my journey to intentional happiness. Compass has held my hand through my transition and my HIV diagnosis. The education that I have received through Compass has taught me how to destroy the stigma that haunts HIV-positive transgender people. The compassion that I have been shown at Compass is what motivates me to love my community unconditionally and to always remember to extend that love back to myself.” Looking ahead, Compass hopes to expand its reach in Palm Beach County as well as

establish a middle and high school for LGBTQ+ students. In the meantime, Seaver says that Compass’ most in-demand programs fall under its youth and families umbrella, often focused on better understanding and compassion related to gender identity/expression and the coming out process. “I am most proud of the number of people and families we’ve been able to help here,” she says. “Over the last few years, we’ve seen increasing needs with our families as well as mental health services. So long as there is a need, we will work to meet those needs and increase our services.” (compassglcc.com) «

Beyond Books BEHIND THE SCENES, A DEDICATED NONPROFIT SUPPORTS AN ARRAY OF FREE PROGRAMS AT THE MANDEL PUBLIC LIBRARY By Christiana Lilly For library director Lisa Hathaway, the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is so much more than a place to read. Here, kids receive tutoring help from certified teachers, adults learn how to update their LinkedIn profiles, parents bring their tots to music classes, and social workers assist families in need. None of these programs would be possible, however, without the West Palm Beach Library Foundation. The nonprofit is governed by a volunteer board of directors that supports the library through more than $500,000 in annual grants and fundraising. The foundation’s two signature events are Food for Thought, a dinner with an inspiring host at each table, and the Yacht Cruise with an auction. At the helm of the foundation is executive director Dean Dimke, who spent his career with the Red Cross before relocating to South Florida. “It’s truly a community resource that brings so much valuable programming and support 34

to our community,” Dimke says of the library. Children who need extra help with reading are invited to Dog Tales, where they read books to patient pups. There are also summer learning programs, breakfasts and lunches, storytime, book clubs, college prep workshops, job help, English classes, art lessons at Studio 411, and more. And for those who can’t make it to the library, a Mobile Mandel van travels to parks and other locations with WiFi and laptops. Perhaps one of the most impactful programs are the two homework centers. Here, students up to twelfth grade can work on homework and also get help from certified Palm Beach County teachers. Hathaway says if she had to choose just one program to keep, it would be these free centers. “Tutoring services cost a lot of money,” she explains. “You have an opportunity as a parent to come in and get your child the help they need from a teacher who already knows what’s going on in our school district.” The library has also opened a new tech-

nology and innovation center, filled with technology for tweens and teens to explore. This includes 3D printing, coding lessons, electronic circuitry, and a studio room for taping podcasts, interviews, and music. Soon, the library will hire a part-time staffer for the center. Another important asset to the library is a full-time social worker, who connects visitors to support resources offered by nonprofits and government entities. “Libraries are much more than books,” Hathaway says. “They’re a safe place for individuals to come in and receive the assistance that they may need to make life comfortable for themselves.” (wpblf.org) «

Hope for Depression Research Foundation Though many medial conditions can be detected through testing, depression remains elusive. If you ask Louisa Benton, executive director of the Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF), the brain is human anatomy’s next frontier for serious breakthroughs. “The brain is the last organ in our body that has not entered the molecular revolution yet,” she says. “Every other branch of medicine (cardiology, urology), they’re looking at organs in the body and know how to treat them at the molecular level and watch them respond to treatments. We have not yet done that for the brain.” But that’s exactly what HDRF intends to do. The foundation, which Palm Beach resident Audrey Gruss established in 2006 in her mother’s memory, seeks to fund the most advanced neuroscience research to find the biological causes of depression, develop new medical diagnoses to describe it, discover new treatments for it, and find methods to prevent it from the outset. HDRF has a research budget of $7 million, and Benton says every donation is directed to research thanks to a benefactor who financed the foundation’s administration and overhead costs. “We maximize every dollar donated because we’re a very nimble organization,” she explains. “Scientifically, it’s not a huge bureau-

cracy and there’s not a lot of red tape.” In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force, which Benton calls the “Manhattan Project of depression research.” It’s a collaboration among 10 leading scientists in the field at different research institutions across the United States and Canada. More than 50 percent of patients being treated for depres-

sion do not respond to existing treatments, which is why HDRF is particularly interested in better understanding treatment-resistant depression and finding more treatments that extend past mainstream depression medications like Prozac and Zoloft. Benton is especially excited about a promising multisite clinical trial at Mount Sinai and Stanford University that’s focused on patients who have treatment-resistant depression and haven’t responded to common medications. Rather than basing the treatment on the serotonin system, the trial is studying a treatment based on the body’s natural opioid system— considering responses to physical pain (like placing a hand on a hot plate) and emotional pain (like rejection). “Treatment-resistant depression is a bit of a misnomer. It’s more like haven’t-figured-itout-yet depression,” Benton says. “If you look at the postmortem brains of people who had serious depression, you can see their brains are very different from other brains, like a garden in winter. Depression isn’t just a mood.” (hopefordepression.org) PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

fter 36-year-old Susan G. Komen died following a three-year battle with breast cancer, her sister, Nancy Brinker, sought to find a cure for the disease. In the 41 years since the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982, breast cancer mortality has decreased 41 percent—a feat thanks in large part to the foundation’s $1.1 billion contribution to breakthrough research and funding of more than 2,600 grants and 500 clinical trials. Since then, Brinker has served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary, was named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most In-

40

fluential People,” and was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2009. But, after moving to Palm Beach to be closer to her parents, Brinker felt there was still more work to do. “With all the progress that we’ve made, I knew it wasn’t going to be enough and I wanted to take a new direction,” Brinker says. “I realized we’d only really begun the solving of half of it; the other half of it are the disparities most people have in this country receiving good health care today. How would we be able to bridge the barriers that people had in finding ways to detect the disease early, gain-

ing access to professionals, and understanding what really needed to be done?” Six years ago, Brinker founded The Promise Fund of Florida, which seeks to eliminate preventable deaths and stop the progression of breast and cervical cancers among women in South Florida. Rather than delve into the breakthrough research, Brinker focused her new project on mitigating the health care disparities—which disproportionally affect minority groups and uninsured women—that lead to delayed diagnoses and higher mortalities. With public and private partnerships, The Promise Fund established a Women’s Health Center at a Palm Beach County Federally Qualified Health Center that has expanded from providing primary care services to now offering state-of-the-art equipment for breast and cervical cancer screenings, including a donated 3D Genius Mammography Machine, ultrasound, Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedures (LEEP), and colposcopies, for uninsured or low-income individuals. So far, more than 80 cancers have been treated, and the program has facilitated more than 4,000 mammograms and 2,000 pap tests, all provided at little to no cost to patients.

Mark Roithmayr, CEO of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation

“It’s been like a miracle watching it all unfold by utilizing current systems that we have and modifying them to the best of our ability and raising money from our community,” Brinker says. “In my dreams every night and when I wake up every day, I pray that we get as much support as we can in these early days because now is the time we can help so many people.” (promisefundofflorida.org)

The Promise Fund works with local leaders and hosts community outreach programs to support its mission is to mitigate health care disparities that lead to delayed diagnoses for breast and cervical cancers. Above: Yolette Boneet and Nancy Brinker at the opening of The Promise Fund Mammography Screening Center in West Palm Beach.

Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation “Palm Beach is a very giving community,” says Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) CEO Mark Roithmayr. “I’ve watched the following that ADDF has grown over the years in Palm Beach to the point where we now do an annual dinner that raises over a million dollars.” However, that wasn’t always the case. When Roithmayr began working with the New York–based nonprofit seven years ago, he says that he encountered a similar question: “People would say, ‘Why would I want to know if I could get Alzheimer’s when there’s nothing I can do about it?’” But ADDF, which was founded in memory of the late cosmetics businesswoman Estée Lauder in 1998, operates under a venture philanthropy model that supports breakthrough Alzheimer’s research and reinvests profits to continue funding more. “ADDF does not give out grants or makes contracts with academic institutions and biotech [companies],” Roithmayr explains. “ADDF invests money and if there is a return, ADDF gets part of that return and puts it back into the science.” The science that ADDF funds is hyper-focused on diagnostics, prevention, and treatment — that’s it. “We don’t do advocacy. We don’t do awareness. We don’t do education,” Roithmayr says. “We do this very niche, high-risk, high-reward science.” PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation In January, ADDF celebrated one of its biggest milestones to date: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted full approval for Leqembi, the first medication approved to slow the course of Alzheimer’s disease. A second drug, Donanemab, which was also shown to delay the progression of the disease, is expected to be on the market by the end of the year. Of the 6 million Americans who have Alzheimer’s, a progressive disease that causes a gradual decline in memory and other mental functions, 1 million are in its early symptomatic stages and could qualify for these newly approved drugs, which clear some of the buildup of amyloid proteins in the brain that is believed to contribute to the progression of the disease. “I’m in my early 60s, and if my cognition starts getting fuzzy in the next couple of years, there are things I can do about it,” Roithmayr says. “My children, who are in their early 30s, will have prescriptions. My two beautiful little grandsons, so long as they stay on the right protocols, will always remember their grandchildrens’ names. This is not a promise for 10 years from now. This is what’s happening right now.” (alzdiscovery.org) 42

When cystic fibrosis (CF) was first discovered in 1938, those diagnosed with this mysterious disease that damaged their lungs, pancreas, and other organs died on average by the time they were 5 years old. To help combat this, a group of concerned parents formed the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) in 1955. “These parents were devastated that there was literally nothing available to help their children because it was a fatal disease at that time,” explains Lora Hazelwood, executive director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Southeast Florida Chapter. “There was nothing available, no treatment or medications.” In the 68 years since CFF was established, new drugs and therapies have been developed. Furthermore, the life expectancy of those with CF has more than doubled in the last three decades. Ten years ago, the average life expectancy of someone with CF was 38 years. Now, for patients born between 2017 and 2021, it’s 53.

“People with CF never planned for a future,” Hazelwood says. “Now they’re like, ‘Oh, I can have a life,’ and are going to college, getting married, and establishing 401Ks.” There are close to 40,000 children and adults living with CF in the United States. Mutations in a specific gene cause a protein to become dysfunctional and clog the lungs and other organs with thick, sticky mucus. This makes those with CF prone to inflammation, infections, and respiratory failure. “A sad part of the disease is that the scientific community found that gathering together is not a good idea,” Hazelwood says. “It can be an isolating disease for a lot of people.” CFF has provided more than 4,000 research grants over the past six years and is currently working with scientists at more than 300 labs across the country. Today, CFF’s Therapeutics Development Network conducts more than 60 clinical trials a year, with a focus on infections, advanced lung disease, and rare

mutations. One of the biggest breakthroughs was in 2019, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Trikafta, a medication to treat CF for patients 12 years and older with at least one F508del mutation (which is estimated to affect 90 percent of the CF population). Earlier this year, the FDA expanded the medication to treat children 2 years and older and to

respond to more mutations. “We laugh because people on Trikafta literally call me and are like, ‘Oh my gosh, I actually have to go and buy new clothes because I’ve gained weight for the first time in my life,” Hazelwood says. “Most people would be upset that they’re gaining weight, but for people with CF it’s fantastic.” (cff.org) «

TWO NDLORDS HAVE PARTNERED WITH THE LORD’S P CE TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THE LOCAL HOUSING CRISIS

Nyasha and Ike Chimbandi are putting their real estate know-how to work helping unhoused people in Palm Beach County— and it all started with an empty rental unit 50

and a chance encounter with a man in need whom they housed for free. “We were like: ‘You know what? Go ahead and use our place,’” Ike recalls. “In the meantime, we contacted [Palm Beach County] and got him services. He stayed there for three weeks.” “That’s when we realized there was a need in the county for affordable housing,” Nyasha adds.

The couple founded their nonprofit, We Second Chance, five years ago to purchase, manage, and provide safe and affordable housing to people in need. Now, through a partnership with The Lord’s Place, they’ve helped dozens of local families find housing. Deirdre is one of the Chimbandis’ residents who turned to The Lord’s Place when medical issues set her back. “I couldn’t have done it without The Lord’s Place and without people

like the Chimbandis,” Deirdre says. “I get the opportunity to take my life back with dignity.” The Chimbandis have more than 30 people living in their homes, all referred to them by The Lord’s Place. Ike says their effort to help others has been an eye-opening experience in more ways than one. “Prior to doing this work, you don’t realize how close you are to homelessness yourself,” he notes. Calvin Phillips, vice president of housing services at The Lord’s Place, says the Chimbandis’ deep understanding of his organization’s mission allows their close collaboration to have an even greater community impact. “We started out saying it was a partnership, but now we talk on a regular basis, and it’s become more of a family,” Phillips says. “They understand the work we’re doing, how we deal with the homeless [population], and what we’re looking for when we’re talking about affordable housing.” The Chimbandis are on a mission to keep expanding We Second Chance so that they can continue to be a part of the solution to homelessness in Palm Beach County. They say they’re proud to be working with an agency like The Lord’s Place that shares their same goals. “This is something that’s much bigger than my husband and I,” Nyasha says. “We love working with The Lord’s Place and their approach to ending homelessness. They recognize it’s not a one [person] show.” (wesecond chance.com)

SERVING UP FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP TO NEIGHBORS IN NEED IS A THANKSGIVING TRADITION FOR RESTAURATEUR PETRO BIKOS

If it’s Thanksgiving, Petro Bikos is busy opening his Farmer Girl Restaurant in Lake Worth Beach to feed people who might not otherwise have a place to celebrate the holiday. It’s a four-decades-old family tradition, says Bikos, who took over the restaurant from his uncle in 2020. “My uncle stopped doing it because he was getting older; with the amount of time and work it took to put on, it was just too much for him,” he explains. “One of the things I wanted to do was give back to the community and continue what he started all those years ago.” Each year, Bikos, his staff, and volunteers serve upward of 1,000 Thanksgiving meals. “I just see a big need right now,” he says of the diners who travel from as far away as Miami for the opportunity. “If it wasn’t for us, they wouldn’t have a place to go or food to eat.” Bikos’ meals include all the traditional Thanksgiving favorites like turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. “We’re there at 5 in the morning on [Thanksgiving] just to finish what we didn’t

get done in the two weeks leading up to the holiday,” Bikos explains. “We don’t open the doors until 11 a.m., but by 9 o’clock there’s a line wrapped around the building.” It’s a kindness Bikos offers not only to those experiencing homelessness, but to anyone who wants to enjoy a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal. For people who live within a 3-mile radius of the restaurant who can’t leave their homes (or who don’t have access to transportation), volunteers will deliver takeout to their doorsteps. “The most rewarding part is everything that comes together to make this happen, especially when you see how many people are actually in need and how many people we’re able to help,” says Bikos, who also owns The Hideout Kitchen & Café in West Palm Beach. Bikos says as long as he has the resources, he will continue helping local people in need. “The community takes care of us throughout the whole year. This is our way of saying thank you for being there for us.” (farmergirlrestaurantfl.com) PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

A TEACHER CREATES A CROSSCULTURAL CONNECTION BETWEEN LOCAL STUDENTS AND THEIR KENYAN COUNTERPARTS

For more than 30 years, Jim Cummings has been working tirelessly to help children in Kenya gain better access to education. But he’s also connecting those students with kids here in Palm Beach County. “We’re in it together. What happens there impacts us, and what happens here impacts people there,” he says. “It’s to our benefit to build up and invest in Kenya.” Cummings’ passion for education and appreciation for Kenyan culture began when he spent time teaching in the country after graduating from college. “When I came back to the States, I started telling stories about this extraordinary experience and eventually developed a desire to give back to the community that launched me on this career,” he says. It’s a career that brought Cummings to Palm Beach County, where he has taught history at both The Benjamin School and Seminole Ridge High School. It’s also where his nonprofit, Kijana, was born. “I started a little fundraiser with the cross-country team at Benjamin to help the school in Kenya I taught at,” 52

he recalls. “Eventually, in 2002, we officially formed Kijana.” “Kijana” means “youth” or “young person” in Swahili, and the term speaks to the organization’s main goal to empower youth. “My vision is to develop a holistic education including the arts, global connectivity, environmental protection, and helping these kids develop skills that are necessary for twentyfirst-century learning,” Cummings says. His dream became a reality in 2020 when his group opened the doors to its first-ever Global Innovation School. “There’s just nothing like it in all of western Kenya,” he notes. The entire concept behind the school—from the curriculum to the art on the walls—is a col-

laboration between people here in Palm Beach County and across the globe in Kenya. “It’s really rewarding to see their faces; they’re so appreciative,” he says of the students. “There’s just so much talent among these kids. When we leave them out and don’t invest in them, we lose out.” Cummings says opening the school has been a dream come true, but there’s still a lot more he wants to do. “Seeing the success has led to the desire to do more good and build more connections,” he adds. Right now, the Kijana team is designing a library and media center that they will start building soon, Cummings explains. He’d also love to bring more American students to Kenya to immerse them in the culture he’s grown to love. “The whole experience of Kenya is eye-opening,” he says. “Visitors are always impressed with the warmth of the culture and the friendliness of the people, so hopefully we’ll inspire more to make the trip.” (kijana.org)

I REALLY WANTED TO MAKE A CLUB TO BE THAT SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR FAMILIES WITH A LOSS OF A PARENT. OR EVEN IF THEY HAVE BOTH PARENTS … BUT THEY CAN’T GET THE RESOURCES THEY NEED TO THRIVE.”

TEENAGE DRE AMS SHAWN HO-HING-KING IS BUILDING SELFESTEEM IN PALM BEACH COUNTY’S KIDS, ONE TEEN AT A TIME

For nearly two decades, Shawn HoHing-King has been guiding teenagers in Palm Beach County on a path to reach their full potential. Her nonprofit organization, Talented Teen Club, is a mission born out of personal loss. “I grew up in a household with 14 siblings and I lost my mom when I was 10,” Ho-HingKing says, adding that losing her mother at a young age forced her to grow up quickly. “I really developed the skills of trying to take care of myself.” But the experience also opened her eyes to the critical importance of

adult support in shaping a child’s future. Ho-Hing-King launched her Talented Teen Club in 2005, catering to students throughout Palm Beach County in public schools and underserved communities through a variety of services. What started as a program with 20 14- to 18-year-old girls each year has now expanded to serve more than 400 teens per year (and more than 17,000 total since the club’s inception). Ho-Hing-King’s organization provides everything from tutoring services and mentorships to self-care programs to summer camps—plus a store filled with hygiene and personal care products that students can access free of charge. “I really wanted to make a club to be that support system for families with a loss of a parent,” she explains. “Or even if they have both parents … but they can’t get the resources they need to thrive.” Ho-Hing-King believes that “if you find

your talent, you will find your purpose.” To that end, her club serves as a bridge to help young people find their talents early. “I think a lot of us are born with natural talents and abilities,” she explains. “If we can tap into those talents and reap those benefits, we will be much happier and blessed individuals.” Talented Teen Club strives to build a strong foundation of self-esteem in its students, helping them to develop confidence at a young age. “With any proper foundation you can build as big of a building as you want,” HoHing-King says. “And with your self-esteem as a person, you need the same foundation so you can dream as big as you want and achieve as much as you can dream.” For Ho-Hing-King, her own dream is that one day her Talented Teen Club will spread to cities across the United States. “I’m honored to be a vehicle of change,” she says. “I just went with my heart. To see the growth and to see all the different success with our students is an honor, and we’re just getting started.” (talentedteenclub.org) PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

ASHLEY BROWN’S PERSONAL ADOPTION STORY FUELS HER PASSION TO HELP LOCAL CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE

Ashley Brown knows firsthand the impact a family can have on a child’s well-being. Adopted as a baby, she says she always knew she would pay back her blessing of being gifted a loving and supportive family. “I said to my mom, ‘I hope you realize when you adopted me and my sister you didn’t just change our lives,’” she recalls. “‘As a result of my adoption, you’ve actually transformed thousands.’” Brown and her husband, Ed, have been helping foster kids all over Florida find their forever families since 2015—the same year they decided to spend forever together too. “We were planning our wedding and I was like, ‘There’s nothing in this world we need. Why don’t we set up a foundation in lieu of wedding gifts and give the gift to foster children?’” Brown says. That’s how their nonprofit, Selfless Love Foundation, came to life. To date, the founda54

tion has helped connect more than 850 foster kids with families. “The same foundation that helped start our family is now the foundation that helps find forever families for foster children and is an extension of family for children who have aged out,” Brown explains. Beyond placing young children with families, Selfless Love provides support, housing, and resources for young people after they turn 18 and age out of the foster care system. And they’re teaching those kids, like Kaitlynn Hanson, how to use their own experience to advocate for change. Hanson won the foundation’s annual Dream Tank competition last year—an event that empowers former foster kids to share their dreams with a panel of experts who advise them on ways to turn those dreams into reality. “Providing structure and a safe place for these kids is going to change

their worlds,” Hanson says. This year’s Dream Tank finalists traveled to the state capital in February for the “Rally in Tally” during the state’s legislative session to speak directly to state policymakers about transforming the child welfare system. Along with serving as a dress rehearsal for the annual Dream Tank competition that took place in West Palm Beach in April, Brown says the “Rally in Tally” was an impactful way to build leadership in the young adults her organization serves. “What we do with our youth is teach them how to articulate what happened to them in foster care, help them offer solutions to the problem, and then bring in child welfare leaders to have discussions about what we can do together to improve the system,” Brown explains. For the first time, Selfless Love has recently begun spreading its programs outside of Florida: The foundation now has boots on the ground in Texas. “I really do believe this is my life purpose and that’s why God gave me a second chance at life,” Brown says. “That’s why I will continue to work 24 hours a day until we can impact as many lives as possible.” (selflesslovefoundation.org)

DR. JEAN MONICE’S MISSION IS THE BEST KIND OF MEDICINE

For pediatrician Dr. Jean Monice, the people he treats are more than just patients—and treating them is more than just a job. “Everybody has my cell phone number because they have to have someone they can call anytime,” he says. “I am their doctor. I am there for them. I am a family member.” For more than 40 years, Monice has helped children in underserved communities, right here in Palm Beach County and in his home country of Haiti. “I love kids,” he adds. “It’s as simple as that. I love kids and I love working with them. Making them feel better is a very nice feeling.” After graduating from medical school in Haiti, Monice completed his residency in New York and made his way to South Florida to start his own practice. “It turned into 28 years as a private practice with over 6,000 patients,” he says. “But, it’s become harder and harder for a solo doctor to survive.” So Monice pivoted. In 2019, he joined the team at FoundCare, a nonprofit, federally qualified health center. He brought with him decades of experience, and he was delighted that his new role mirrored his personal mission to provide everyone with access to quality health care. He now serves as the group’s pediatric medical director. “They have the same vision that I had [in my] private practice,” Monice says of FoundCare. In addition to his work locally, Monice gives back to people in need in his native Haiti, traveling to his hometown several times a year to offer vaccines and health screenings. “We have a team that goes into different parts of the town or the countryside to host a health fair and examine people living there,” he says.

“Everybody that you see, you make a difference in their life. That’s what it’s all about.” With a smile on his face and a stethoscope around his neck, Monice believes that helping others is the greatest gift of his life. And, he says, he’ll continue to go wherever he’s needed, for as long as he’s able. “No matter what day of the week it is, I will be there serving the population. Letting them know we’re here for them is the main goal.” (foundcare.org ) « PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

A Spring of Hope is an international NGO that provides rural South African schools and community centers with clean water sources, permaculture gardening methods, and waterless sanitation solutions. The organization also provides a range of services and programs designed to promote selfsufficiency and mutual aid, including small-enterprise development.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Its purpose is clear: Finding cures. Saving children. It is the only National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since the hospital opened its doors.

Since 2012, Sweet Dream Makers (SDM) has improved the lives of more than 17,000 local children and their families by ensuring that they have safe, clean, and appropriate beds to sleep in every night. More than 100 service agencies refer vulnerable families to SDM for beds, bedding, and essential furniture; today the organization provides over 500 beds per month.

FINAL SCENES

wildest dreams By Kristen Desmond LeFevre More than 200 rescued animals—from birds to reptiles to big cats and everything in between—are resident ambassadors at Jupiter’s Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. And this month, they’ll call a larger campus home. Just 5 miles west in Jupiter Farms, the new 20-acre campus will be known as the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary at Abramson and Schlaggar Reserve, featuring lush vegetation and wetlands, larger enclosures and meeting spaces, and state-of-the-art veterinary facilities. Executive director Amy Kight says it has been bittersweet to leave the location that the organization has occupied for the past 40 years. “It’s like your childhood home,” Kight says. “You’re so excited to move into a fantastic new place that fits your needs better, but still it’s heartbreaking to leave the old place behind.” However, Kight says the move is necessary; the new digs will triple the center’s size and capacity, enabling it to continue its mission of animal rescue and public education. A $1.25 million gift from the Mary Alice Fortin Foundation is funding a 2,800-square-foot amphitheater that will headline the sanctuary’s educational activities. “We are overwhelmed with gratitude to the Fortin Foundation for this transformational gift,” Kight says. “The way the community has responded in helping us meet our financial goals speaks volumes about their dedication to the sanctuary, our wildlife, and our environment. We couldn’t be more grateful.” (buschwildlife.org) « 112
