v FROM THE PUBLISHER
Looking Forward s I enjoy telling anyone who asks, I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. I’m not opposed to them, but I believe in working by my own schedule rather than by the dictation of a calendar. This has been a key principle in all of my business dealings—creating my own destiny instead of relying on arbitrary factors. If it’s worth doing at all, it’s worth doing immediately. When I bought this publishing company twenty-one years ago, it was struggling. Circulation was weak, content was uninspired and paid advertising was almost nonexistent, but I saw an opportunity to serve an audience that would support a worthwhile product. Some people might have suggested stepping back and observing before I purchased the company—to see where it was headed—but that wasn’t my style, so why wait? With careful investment, patience and hard work, we soon brought the company into financial health. Today, we maintain our “fiscal fitness” by staying committed to developing new products and services. It’s a mild stretch, but I see some parallels with what has happened in Florida during the past few years. The Sunshine State has had its challenges, including one year in which it actually lost population for the first time in six decades, but there seems to be renewed interest in Florida as a place to live, work and invest. This year, Wells Fargo analysts project the state’s economy will grow faster than the nation’s, personal income will rise about 4 percent, population will increase by about 130,000 and businesses will add roughly the same number of new jobs. Also noteworthy is a conversation one of our editors recently had with the president of a realty company that specializes in Florida luxury homes. She said her company’s sales grew modestly in 2011 and that she already has more “feelers” from prospective homebuyers than she had at this time last year. And, as is to be expected from the two wealthiest markets in the state, Palm Beach and Naples remain top draws for relocation from Floridians and newcomers alike. Those, of course, are forecasts and anecdotes, not hard evidence, but it does seem clear people are feeling bullish once again about this great state—and perhaps remembering the reasons why they moved here in the first place. As 2012 dawns, are you among them? If you’re someone who waits until a new year arrives before establishing new attitudes and new routines, be advised that it’s January. Your wait is over. Make some good things happen. Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year to you and your family.

v EDITOR’S LETTER
Power Up ompiling our annual Power Issue always is an eye-opening experience. In the process of seeking out power players and formidable machines, we inevitably are floored by the no-limits mentality and the sheer innovation that exists in our midst. This year, we present a new signature feature, “10 Hot Athletes.” It’s no secret that athletes push their physical and mental boundaries to the edge, all in the name of victory. But some—like swimmer Dara Torres, who medaled at the Beijing Olympics at age 41 and may be returning for the London Olympics at age 45—are so determined and passionate that they rekindle our faith in the human spirit. Our featured lineup, including tennis great Serena Williams and star soccer goalie Hope Solo, is stellar on many levels. The athletes are accomplished in their respective sports, but they also use their profiles to help make the world a better place. Read their stories on page 66. If you are a boater, you probably know the value of a great runabout. We present a few of our favorites in “Love Me Tender” (page 92). Our automotive editor, who is equally passionate about luxury yachts, looks at six classics and classics-in-the-making, each with the speed and power to make serious waves in the world’s most stylish ports. And speaking of speed, cycling legend Greg LeMond lets loose for a private cycling challenge involving several Palm Beachers. Led by Carey O’Donnell and husband Steve Barry, a group of local cycling aficionados met LeMond at Yellowstone’s treacherous Upper Loop for the ride of a lifetime. It was as exhilarating as it was grueling, as Carey writes in her firsthand account of the day. I was breathless just reading her dispatch, “Tour de Yellowstone,” on page 78. Enjoy the issue!

v If there is one thing
that’s better than coffee, it’s coffee with a conscience. I love the concept behind Hawaiian Gold, a collection of coffees grown ethically and sustainably in Hawaii but processed in the company’s roasting facility in Jupiter. See page 99.
Beauty product of the moment: Chanel’s spring 2012 color collection, a soft palette of corals, roses and peaches that are pretty as a flower. I especially love the nail color—a different one for each month from April to June.

v ANDIE MACDOWELL Actress, model and mom Andie MacDowell is best known for her roles in Groundhog Day, Four Weddings and a Funeral and sex, lies, and videotape. On January 30, she will speak at the Time is of the Essence luncheon for H.O.W. (Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper) at the Flagler Museum Pavilion in Palm Beach. “I hope I can inspire the audience to fight for better research and urge them to continue the muchneeded support for all women who are fighting ovarian cancer,” she says. —Michelle M. Havich n What other causes are important to you? I love Habitat for Humanity. One of the things I am most proud of is donating enough wood for two families to build their homes from the lumber off my ranch in Montana, [and then] having the families return with their children to replant seedlings, which are now above my head. The part that I like most about community service is when I can be more hands-on so that I’m not just doing it from a distance. n WHICH Of your past roles is your favorite and why? I will always be thankful to Steven Soderbergh for the role I had in sex, lies, and videotape. It’s the most important movie because it changed my career and how people perceived me as an actor. I also enjoy the responses I get from people on the street as to how much they continue to love Groundhog Day. n What future projects do you have in the works? I just finished working on this new ABC Family series, Jane By Design, in Los Angeles and I’m looking forward to it airing in January. It’s been a lot of fun working on a series that revolves around fashion, which is where I started.

In November 2002, Randi Siegal opened a gift store in Palm Beach called Rapunzel’s Closet. Fast-forward a decade, and the tiny shop has turned into a two-store boutique: one known for its women’s contemporary resortwear brands, such as Splendid, Lemon and Michael Stars, and the other a children’s store offering Katie Mack, Cute as Buttons and other lines. Rapunzel’s Closet is celebrating its tenth anniversary throughout 2012 with a different event every month. From January 16-30, the shop will offer a 20-percent discount on jeans for customers who bring in gently worn jeans to donate to Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse. The boutique’s year-long celebrations will conclude in December with an evening bash featuring cocktails and, of course, shopping. (561659-5300, shoprapunzels.com)
Garden glory Palm Beach boasts some of the most beautiful architecture in the country, but the lavish landscapes surrounding those structures should not be overlooked. To that end, the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach has created the Lesly S. Smith Landscape Award to recognize a garden or landscape that captures a traditional yet unique Palm Beach look. Nominations will be accepted until January 13, and the winner will be announced at the foundation’s Preservationist Dinner on March 15. (561832-0731, palmbeachpreservation.org)

the seat of power Fido now has a seat at the dinner table. The Bone Appetit Seat, created by Boca Raton artist Talin Lyman, is a highchair designed for petite pooches. The wooden chair, which stands on replica canine legs, features dog-friendly steps that lead to an enclosed seat—accessible through a swinging back door—and a tray with slots for food and water bowls. Each Bone Appetit Seat is handpainted by Lyman and can be personalized with a dog portrait or to match your dining decor. Lyman, who paints custom fabrics, murals and even pianos, presented a Bone Appetit Seat to dog lover Martha Stewart, who featured it on her show in November. (561-573-0123, boneappetitseat.com) 42

The Singer Island-based Hibel, who has been referred to as America’s best loved and most versatile artist and best colorist, will be honored January 8-15 by the Hibel Museum of Art with several planned events and festivities. Hibel’s artistic spark was ignited at the age of nine, when she began learning watercolor. Now Hibel’s works, which span more than seven decades, have been exhibited in 20 countries on four continents. “I like to think that my art reminds people of important values, such as brotherly love, the innocence of children and our need for beauty,” she says. —L.G.S.

having it all As a successful lifestyle fashion designer and executive vice president of development and acquisitions at the Trump Organization, Ivanka Trump Kushner knows what it is like to balance her work projects. And now, the New York-based designer of jewelry, footwear, handbags, outerwear and apparel, and busy real estate executive who travels from Chicago to Panama and Waikiki to Istanbul, has added the role of mother to the mix. In July 2011, Ivanka and husband Jared welcomed daughter Arabella Rose to the family. Although she is launching her apparel line in the spring and in the process of opening the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Toronto, Kushner has tempered her once-hectic travel schedule to spend more time with Arabella. She talks to PBI about her life in New York and Palm Beach and how she balances motherhood and work. —Linda Marx
PBI: Being a workhorse, do you find it difficult juggling motherhood with your many professional responsibilities? KUSHNER: I absolutely love motherhood and couldn’t be happier. Like any working mother, finding balance is always a challenge and I continue to adjust and work at it. Overall, the most important thing in my life is my family, and I am very lucky. That said, I would not be fulfilled without my work. I need to try and manage the two as best I can. You introduced coats in the fall, and

diversions first class v Thai Breakers A seaside retreat on the Gulf of Thailand blends exotic experience with luxurious comfort. By Robert Ragaini
The Anantara Resort & Spa in Hua Hin, Thailand, named for the Sanskrit word meaning “without end, treats guests with endless opportunities to experience Thai culture while enjoying all the amenities of a five-star resort.

Facing the Gulf of Thailand, the beach resort’s pavilions are separated by stunning gardens on 14 private acres. Paths wind past fountains and statues, and over lagoons on arched wooden bridges. The grounds are equally gorgeous at night, when torches light up the walkways. The airy guest rooms have balconies or terraces with lovely garden or beach views, and interiors feature gleaming teak floors, exquisite fabrics, silk pillows and carved cabinets. Twenty-first century amenities include satellite televisions, iPod chargers and high-speed Internet. Guests staying in the luxe rooms in the Lagoon wing and the dozen Anantara suites receive additional privileges, such as exclusive access to the private Lagoon Pool & Bar, complimentary afternoon tea and drinks, and morning yoga. These guests may also tap the services of the Chief Experience Guru,

who will arrange tee times at one of the resort’s seven picturesque golf courses, recommend places to visit in town, and customize unique, fascinating local experiences—like tours to national parks, royal palaces and Buddhist shrines, or trips to the night market in neighboring Hua Hin. Other singular experiences include Thai cooking and flower arranging classes, fruit carving, art classes and Thai boxing. When guests are ready to unwind, they retreat to the Anantara Spa. Its seven suites rest amid tranquil pools studded with purple and pink lilies. We recommend the Signature Journey, which begins with a floral foot ritual followed by a turmeric scrub and a full-body, warm sand massage. Afterward, indulge in a soak by the sea in an alfresco tub. Dining options in the seven restaurants span the globe, but to continue in the Thai theme, dine in Rim Nam on traditional Thai and Thai fusion cuisine. Some dishes to try: massaman peanut curry, rock lobster with rosemary, chicken baked in a pineapple shell and chili ice cream. At fabulous beach buffets, dishes are presented at a procession of food stations. Only Dining by Design tops the extravagant buffets. Guests choose the time, the place and their personalized menu, and a butler handles the details.
Clockwise from left: beachside dining; suite with a garden view; the lotus pond.
THE LEGEND HOLE 8
For a truly unusual experience, plan a visit to Anantara Hua Hin during the King’s Cup Elephant Polo match. A nearby field is transformed into a pristine polo pitch, where the event begins with a white-robed monk blessing 30 elephants. Brass bands and drummers blast onto the field, while Thai shamans and brightly garbed dancers complete the parade. As the match gets under way, players on elephant-back swipe with elongated mallets at regulation-size polo balls. The voice of the announcer booms with excitement as the ball flies down the field, animals thundering in pursuit as if their lives depend on it. Because tournament proceeds support Thailand’s remaining elephants, that is not far from the truth. Adventurous guests can get a taste of this extraordinary experience by booking a pachyderm at the resort’s elephant park and trying out a mallet for themselves. huahin.anantara.com u

COASTAL CRUISER The western coast of Croatia provides the snaking roads to test Bentley’s stunning new Continental GTC. BY HOWARD WALKER
The Windex-blue waters of the Adriatic shimmer like a million polished diamonds. Pastel-colored fishing boats rock and roll in the picture-perfect harbor, animated by a warm breeze that blows from the Sahara. It’s late fall in the ancient coastal town of Rovinj on Croatia’s Istrian peninsula, a relaxed three-hour drive south of Venice and the border with Italy. The tourists have long gone and the beachfront bars are shuttered, handing this magical place back to the locals. Day-to-day life once again resumes at its easy, laid-back pace. This western coast of Croatia, with its deserted roads, breathtaking Tuscan-like scenery and sun-on-your-face warmth, is just about 60
PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED
the perfect place to try Bentley’s joyous new 2012 Continental GTC convertible. With a gentle lift of a shiny chrome lever, the Bentley’s heavily padded canvas top whirrs backwards in a mere 25 seconds. Wind-blocker raised, the new Neck Warmer—it blows toasty air from below the front seat headrest—set on “high,” and Acoustic Alchemy jazzing things up on the Bentley’s mind-blowing 14-speaker, 1,100-watt Naim audio system. We’re ready. Somehow this northern part of Croatia managed to escape the brutal war of independence in which Yugoslavian and Serb bad boys did their best to level the place. All that ended in 1995, and since then Croatia
has rebuilt, revived and opened its arms to visitors looking for a quieter, more genteel place in the sun. Top down, we point the Bentley’s resculpted nose south toward Pula, on the southern tip of the peninsula. This ancient port is famous for its remarkably well-preserved first-century amphitheater, one of the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world. Here, gladiators used to duke it out in front of 23,000 blood-thirsty locals. In the metal, this new Bentley is nothing less than a piece of automotive sculpture. Whereas the previous model was undoubtedly sexy and elegant, this new version has
lines that are noticeably crisper, bolder, more razor-edged. The jury is still out on the shaping of the new squared-off rump and flat-surfaced composite trunk lid, but there’s no doubt that the overall look of this new GTC is beyond breathtaking. From Palm Beach to Palm Springs, heads are going to spin. Keeping the sparkling Adriatic on the right side, we power along the serpentine coastal road to Opatija at the foot of Mount Ucka. We stop for lunch at the famed seafood eatery Restaurant Bevanda, right on the water’s edge, to devour its trademark Kvarner Bay scampi tartar and wild asparagus risotto. From here we spear inland, along the blisteringly fast Route 44. It’s a chance to stretch the Bentley’s long legs and get a taste of the more powerful 6.0-liter twinturbo W12 nuclear powerplant and fastershifting—think 200 milliseconds—QuickShift six-speed auto. For a car that tips the scales at a whisker more than 5,600 pounds, this new GTC is a true rocket ship. While the big 12-cylinder cranks out a mighty 567 horsepower, it’s the engine’s vast output of torque—516 poundfeet—delivered in full from just 1,600 rpm, that makes the car feel so effortlessly fast. Floor the throttle from rest and the car’s all-wheel drive system channels the power to all four wheels, catapulting this leviathan to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. Keep your foot planted and this tsunami of torque won’t quit giving until the speedo needle is touching the 195-mph marker. And through the fast, sweeping curves, the big four-seat Bentley somehow shrinks in size. There’s a remarkable agility here that belies the car’s bulk. The retuned steering is laser-precise, the body roll near non-existent and the grip from the rubberware is positively leach-like. No car this size has the right to be this much fun to drive fast.
And you command this rolling Battlestar Galactica from a cockpit that sets the standard in bespoke luxury and elegance.
New “cobra-style” front seats—yes, they do have that distinctive flared-neck look—grip you with hand-stitched bolsters, while 10 pneumatic cells give you the best back massage outside of Canyon Ranch. This is a truly remarkable car. And, for the fortunate few able to pay the $212,800 asking price, simply and unquestionably the best convertible in the world. u

Legacy Caring for the Vision
Helen Messic's vision of building the Gerstenberg Center was achieved and now the torch passes to those who will continue the legacy of helping to provide the best Hospice care available in our community. Those like Amanda Schumacher, daughter of Helen Messic and Chairwoman of the 2012 Hospice Evening, Cathy Flagg, daughter of Richard and Pat Johnson and CoChairman of the 2012 Hospice Evening, Rex Ford, son of the late Jeanne Ford and President of the Palm Beach Membership of Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach County, and Mark Cook, son of Ned and Pat Cook and a Vice President of the Palm Beach Membership of Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach County. Helen Messic, Richard and Pat Johnson, Jeanne Ford and Pat Cook instilled into their children a level of caring and commitment, and duty to their community to give back with passion. When Amanda Schumacher was in her early 20’s she was inspired by her mother. “ When I heard what my mother was doing in Palm Beach County for Hospice, it propelled me to make a difference from where I was living in Boston- Massachusetts. Back in the early 80’s, I applied as a Hospice volunteer at Cambridge- Massachusetts to help the dying. It was a privilege to assist the patients with their daily needs. My mother made a difference in my heart and through that I carried the torch to make a difference for those that I served. My father and fatherin-law were patients of Hospice, they were taken care with such dignity and grace. We appreciate all that Hospice has done for us. For the last 10 years, I’ve been inspired to be a part of the Palm Beach Membership Board of Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach County.” Cathy Flagg was also inspired by her parents. “They have both lived their lives giving back to others. They have set a wonderful example for their five children. I am blessed to have been raised in an environment where giving back is second nature.” Cathy
was a Co-Chair of Hospice in 2000 and Chair in 2001, she was also a President of Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach Membership and served on the Board of Spectrum of Palm Beach County. “My father-in-law suffered from Alzheimer’s for 10 years. Near the end of his life, Hospice came into their home and made him as comfortable as possible. We will be forever grateful for their kindness and compassion. “ Mark Cook’s inspiration for his involvement with Hospice was due to his parents and John Brogan. Being involved with Hospice for 12 years, he is impressed by the compassion provided by Hospice to families during monumental periods of change. “The Palm Beach Membership group has provided support that has given Hospice of Palm Beach County the opportunity to grow into the incredibly successful organization that it has become and hopefully will continue to be.” “My mother taught us that life is about giving back,” said Rex Ford, who has been involved with Hospice for more than 15 years. “Our membership has contributed greatly to the mission of Hospice by supporting grants for programs and services that would not otherwise be available. I recently served as a health care surrogate for a colleague who died as the result of esophageal cancer and was under Hospice care for the last month of his life. The kindness, caring and concern of Hospice workers reinforced once again that our work is needed, necessary and the right choice.” The legacy of Palm Beach Membership of Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach County has made a difference in our community because of the inspiration of the visionaries for all they have done for those at the end of life. Please be a part of the legacy of the Palm Beach Membership of Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach County by attending the Hospice Evening, January 13, 2012. Jarrod Saltalamacchia
In the world of baseball, one of the most exciting stages to play on is in Boston. In a city filled with exuberant fans, an implacable media and one of the most storied franchises of the MLB, the Boston Red Sox is one of the preeminent teams in the league. Jarrod “Salt” Saltalamacchia (the longest name in the bigs), catcher for the Sox and a West Palm Beach native, could not feel more at home. “Boston is awesome. All of it is incredible— the fans, Fenway [Park], the history. This is baseball,” he says. Drafted out of Royal Palm High School in 2003 by the Atlanta Braves, Salt made his Major League debut in 2007. After a stint with the Texas Rangers, the Sox traded for Salt in 2010, and in 2011, he played 103 games, batting .235 with an on-base percentage of .288. Salt and the Red Sox look for redemption in 2012 after their epic collapse leading up to the post season, and with the stacked lineup of great, young talent, the Sox should be a top preseason contender rolling into April. palmbeachillustrated.com | january 2012 67

HECTOR GARRIDO
The bond between horse and rider is never greater than in dressage. Defined as the highest expression of horse training, rider and horse perform an intricate ballet, bringing the horse to the peak of its physical limits, while the rider coaxes excellence from the nearly oneton animal. Wellington resident Heather Blitz has brought her horse, Paragon, to those limits, making the delicate dance seem effortless and easy. “When it looks easy, you know you have reached perfection, she says. Fresh off team gold and individual silver at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, Blitz has now set her eye on the summer Olympic games in London. The road to the London games runs through Wellington and the World Dressage Masters this fall, where Paragon will take his first crack at Grand Prix competition. Blitz bred and raised the 8-yearold Paragon, a horse some say is the horse of the century.

The two are ranked second in the United States and sixth in the world by the International Sailing Federation, and their London ticket hopes come down to the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Perth, Australia, this winter. Becoming a professional sailor in 1997, Strube’s bid for the London games marks his fourth Olympic campaign—a dream ever since he was a child. “I had three goals when I was younger: play professional football, sail in the America’s Cup and sail in the Olympics,” he says. Already achieving two of those goals, with a brief career with Arena Football League team the Orlando Predators in 1994, Strube also has sailed for three America’s Cups (Aloha Challenge, 1999-2000; OneWorld Challenge, 200203; Victory Challenge, 2006-07).

The Young Gun Golf is quickly becoming a young man’s game. Leading the charge are the PGA Tour’s young guns, a group of twenty-somethings who are as skilled as they are loud— fashionwise—on the links. Jupiter resident and 2010 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Rickie Fowler, 23, has quickly made a name for himself as one to watch in the PGA Tour. Fowler made a splash on the tour after making the United States’ Ryder Cup Team in 2010 as a captain’s pick. Fowler, the first PGA Tour rookie to play in the Ryder Cup, quieted skeptics with a solid performance on the backstretch of the tournament, keeping the United States’ hopes alive in a valiant, though losing, campaign. Fowler took his first pro victory in October 2011, topping U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy at the OneAsia Tour’s Korea Open, shooting 16 under and earning a fat $249,864 check. Ranked twenty-eighth in the world, Fowler looks to make strides in 2012, playing for majors and perhaps taking on his newly adopted home turf at the 2012 Honda Classic at PGA National Resort in February. 70

The Superstar SERENA WILLIAMS
HSN
This Palm Beach Gardens resident and tennis superstar may quite possibly go down as the most dominant female tennis player of all time. Serena Williams has been a force in the Women’s Tennis Association since she turned pro in 1995, earning her first top 20 ranking in 1998. With 27 Grand Slam titles (13 singles, 12 doubles and two mixed doubles), two Olympic gold medals for doubles with her sister Venus (2000 and 2008) and a staggering $34+ million in career prize money—making her first all-time among women athletes and fourth among tennis athletes—the former world No. 1 ushered in a new era of women’s tennis. Off the court, Williams has made a name for herself with her signature fashion line for HSN, and was recently appointed UNICEF’s International Goodwill Ambassador. As the London games loom, Williams looks to the one title that still eludes her: a singles gold medal, which she failed to capture when she lost in the quarterfinals in the 2008 Beijing games.

The Icon The summer Olympics just wouldn’t be the same without Dara Torres. The swimming phenom from Coral Springs has competed in five Olympic games, starting in 1984 at the age of 17, and winning a total of 12 medals. In the 2008 Beijing games, at 41, Torres became the oldest swimmer to compete in the Olympics, winning silver medals in all three events she competed in (50-meter freestyle, 4x100-meter medley relay and 4x100meter freestyle relay), and beating out many who idolized Torres as an icon of the sport. Now 44 (she’ll be 45 by the London games), after coming off knee surgery, Torres is back in the pool training for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team trials in June to secure a spot on her sixth U.S. Olympic team. 72

The Champion Georgina Bloomberg
Kathy Russell
Splitting her time between Wellington; New Salem, New York; and Manhattan, Georgina Bloomberg is one well-traveled rider. Bloomberg, 28, has been riding for 23 years, making the transition to jumper in 2001. As a Grand Prix show jumper, she has tallied numerous victories at the Winter Equestrian Festival (2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010); was a member of the winning USA Super League teams in Hamina, Finland and Falsterbo, Sweden in 2007; and the Hampton Classic in 2009, among others. Still rehabbing from a riding accident in November 2010 that left her with a fractured vertebra, Bloomberg is putting her 2012 Olympic aspirations on hold but will compete in the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington this winter. When not in the saddle, Bloomberg can be found helping out with the Rider’s Closet, a program she founded in 2006 that collects new and used riding clothes for therapeutic and intercollegiate riding programs, pony clubs and riders who are in need. In May, Bloomberg added the title of author to her name with the penning of the young-adult novel The A Circuit [Bloomsbury], the first of a series that follows the life of a billionaire-heiress in the horse-show world (sound familiar?).

The Fast One Gunnar Jeanette
Rick Dole/CORE autosport
Bit by the racing bug early on, West Palm Beach native and 2011 American Le Mans Series LMPC class champion Gunnar Jeannette has become one of the hottest drivers to watch in sports-car racing. Turning pro at 17 in 2000, Jeannette quickly climbed the ranks of the ALMS and Grand-AM racing series. Racing for CORE Autosport in 2011, Jeannette tested the mettle of LMPC class, with two first-place podium appearances (Long Beach, Mosport) and four additional turns at the podium. But it was not until the last nine laps of the final 1,000-mile race in the series that the champion was determined, with Jeannette coming out smelling like roses—and motor oil. Jeannette’s need for speed is not limited to the racetrack. When not behind the wheel, he is most likely falling through the sky. An avid skydiver and BASE jumper, Jeannette has taken to freefalling and wing suits as therapy. “There is nothing like being up in the sky in a nice freefall. It is strangely relaxing,” he says.
The Gate Keeper HOPE SOLO
ABC/Craig Sjodin
Soccer superstar Hope Solo is both tough and graceful under pressure. As Team USA’s goaltender, Solo has blocked shots in the team’s gold medal campaign in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and gave an outstanding performance in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, earning the Golden Glove award for best goaltender and the Bronze Ball award for third-best player overall in the international competition. Solo returned stateside to play for Boca Raton’s team magicJack (now defunct) in the Women’s Professional Soccer league with fellow Team USA members Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Shannon Boxx, Becky Sauerbrunn, Christie Rampone and Jill Loyden. Solo also competed in ABC’s 13th season of Dancing with the Stars, coming in fourth place and just missing the finals. Now, Solo and Team USA have set their eye on taking gold at the games of the XXX Olympiad in London.

The Rising Star LUCAS LALOR
Mariana Bollini
Scion of the heralded Lalor family of Argentine polo fame, Lucas Lalor—the son of Luis Lalor Jr., former ninegoaler and current president of the Asociación Argentine de Polo—considers the sport of kings more than a family tradition. Picking up a mallet when he was just 7, Lalor, now 21, says it was a natural transition when he started to play. “My father got me into polo at an early age. Everything was in place and I just started playing,” he says. Coming off a stellar summer, Lalor was named MVP of the Beluga Robert Skene invitational in Santa Barbara, California, in July while helping team Audi capture the trophy over rival Piaget. Team Audi and Lalor look to continue their winning streak this winter as the 2012 20-goal season at the International Polo Club in Wellington unfurls. Lalor is tagged as Audi’s fourth man, joining Captain Marc Ganzi, Nic Roldan and Rodrigo Andrade. With a fourgoal handicap, Lalor’s aggressive style of play and strong competitive streak definitely make him a player to watch.

Should you find yourself at a charity gala this season with a big glass of wine in one hand and an auction paddle in the other, keep in mind that you are surrounded by hundreds of eyewitnesses. While that can be a merry benefit when bidding on a case of Haut-Brion or dinner for 10 at Pistache, the rise of The Ultimate Experience as live auctiontainment ought to come with a few words of warning—you win it, you’re in it. A round of golf with Jack Nicklaus; a tennis match with Andy Roddick; or, in my case, a full day of cycling for eight around the unmerciful Upper
Loop of Yellowstone National Park with three-time Tour de France champion Greg LeMond. Like I said, all those witnesses pose kind of a problem. This story begins one midsummer night in 2010 at a gala under the stars in Big Sky, Montana. My husband, Steve Barry, and I were out with our favorite group of Palm Beach hoodlums who spend summers and ski weeks in this under-the-radar resort town between Yellowstone and Bozeman. We duly populated the tables and bid on fishing trips and private chefs to support Big Sky’s community projects. Copalmbeachillustrated.com | JANUARY 2012 79
chairs Stacy Ossorio and Loren Bough—no strangers to Palm Beach—had convinced LeMond, a part-time resident of Big Sky, to donate the day’s ride as a sweet little treat to conclude the auction, knowing that I’d bite. When the gavel came down, my sister and her family stared at me slack-jawed, predeclining the offer to ride along, while the rest of the crowd cheered, led by Palm Beachers Bill and Rebecca Dunn, who offered their guesthouse should we have an overflow of visiting cyclists the following summer. Those of you who own road bikes—even a beach cruiser or rusty old Raleigh—know exactly how it feels to step up your game and ride harder and faster than you’re used to. You draw on everything you’ve got: breath from the bottom of your lungs, marrow from the middle of your bones and a whole lot of heart to flow the high-octane cocktail through your system. Trying to keep pace with LeMond over 60 mountainous miles in one of the wildest places on Earth was going to take serious training, or illegal substance, or both. LeMond might be close to my age now, but he’s still Greg LeMond, the first American to win a Tour de France, the first cyclist on a Sports Illustrated cover and one of the top four or five riders in the history of the sport by anyone’s measure. The morning after the auction, when the wine had cleared from my system, the reality of the ride pulled me out of bed before the sun had a chance to yawn and stretch. I called the three friends who had steered Steve and me into road biking a few years before. They had helped us choose the right bikes and taught us how to eat, train, pedal and draft. More than once, they picked us up off the pavement at stoplights when we’d topple over, Charlie Chaplin-style, forgetting to snap out of 80

our cleats. Here was my chance to repay their kindness with the ride of a lifetime. Dr. Chris Fox, the West Palm Beach-based sports medicine chiropractor who keeps the area’s athletes in good working order, was my first call. On a visit to Big Sky two years earlier, he had insisted on riding the Upper Loop, despite sleep deprivation and sea-level lungs, after hearing my breathless account of our first experience. Chris Fix, the normally eloquent co-owner of Velocity Cycling Studio in West Palm Beach, was speechless in response. Fix is a cyclopedia of cycling lore and reveres the American champion. Raphael Clemente, head of the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority and a relentless advocate for bike safety in Florida, who became a pro

cyclist in the 1990s inspired by LeMond’s performance at the 1989 World Championships, jibbered into the phone, speaking faster than he’d ever ridden in his life: The rainsoaked race with its 60-mph downhill finish is viewed as one of the greatest of all time, and won by LeMond fewer than two years after being almost fatally shot by his brother-in-law in a 1987 hunting accident. Clemente’s excited account was punctuated by search results as he scrolled for flights to Bozeman for his whole family. Later, we added Palm Beach/Montana resident Paul Gingras, a lifelong athlete with a passion for cycling, and Victoria Smith, a teacher at Velocity. Et voilà—our seven riders, and a supporting team of Dawn and Jules Fox to follow us in the “sag wagon,” Sally Gingras as photographer ferry, plus Lois and Kaia Clemente as backups.

LeMond’s public persona as a driven, world-class competitor is not what you get when you meet him. He’s an affable, generous spirit with sky-blue eyes and a winning smile (even his smile wins!). When fans comment on his transformation from the intense, whippety competitor of the ’80s and ’90s who turned the cycling world on its head, he nods in agreement, musing that it almost feels like he was a different person back then. Almost. The notion that we live life forward, but understand it backward, has profound applications for LeMond. The day of the ride finally dawns at O-dark-hundred under martial law, which I had declared the night before to keep our troops in motion and synched with LeMond, his company’s CEO Mark Handfelt, and close pal Mike Klasen. We congregate at Blue Moon Bakery just as the sun is rising, warm despite the chilly morning with anticipation of the ride. (If you’re in Big Sky and hungry for breakfast, do not miss the bakery’s “Benny”—ovenbaked egg, ham and cheddar melted between a toasted bagel. Our breakfast of champions.) Ninety minutes later, four vehicles, 14 people, 10 bikes and a 82

mountain of gear converge at Norris Junction, the don’t-blink hamlet assigned as our starting point. The Upper Loop of America’s first national park is quite different than the Lower, which is home to half of the world’s geothermal features, including Old Faithful. The park is essentially a super volcano, and most of the wildlife roams the Upper Loop’s narrow roads, dramatic waterfalls, canyons and cliffs (one deliciously called Sheepeater). Earlier in the summer, Steve and I biked a section and passed buffalo snoozing on the side of the road and grizzlies grazing nearby, thankfully monitored by rangers. We have been followed along this route before by spotted owls and red-tailed hawks hoping to lunch on small prey disturbed by our movement. The first 20 miles through woods breeze by as we chat and call to each other, marveling at the perfection of the morning. LeMond is just one of the gang—until we reach the twisting descent into Mammoth Hot Springs. We are about to get our first astounding glimpse of the champion’s close, personal relationship with speed. I’m steering through corners chipped into the prehistoric cliffs at 32 mph, doing my best to follow in the slipstream of Klasen’s lead, when LeMond blows by me like he is fired from a cannon. Behind him is Clemente, copying the world-famous eggshaped position with hindquarters high in the air behind the seat, chin down near the handlebars. I can’t tell where the humans end and the bikes begin. On Clemente’s wheel is my husband, who is still grounded for the stunt, passing cars on the corners with no regard for the 1,000-foot drop to our right. LeMond, in his ultraaerodynamic tuck, glides away from them both, traveling north of 55 mph, with the two pedaling hard in pursuit. The road out of Mammoth leads to a vertiginous chasm over the Gardner River. As we approach the yawning suspension bridge,

LeMond one-hands a videocam out of his jersey to shoot the big view, and then turns fully around on his saddle to film those of us behind him—both hands on the camera—as he crosses the span at 19 or 20. Superb yet unbalanced balance. LeMond may have stopped racing, but his mind hasn’t. Keeping pace with him in a conversation can be as demanding as on a bike. Our lunch stop at historic Roosevelt Lodge refuels his zeal for a favorite topic—the remarkable advances in athletic training made possible by technology, and how they are wrapped into the culture and products of LeMond Fitness. He swaps ideas and experiences with Fox, a former trainer in the NFL, NHL and at the Atlanta Olympics, as fans interrupt for autographs, thrilled with the surprise access to the cycling legend. Recharged and still raring to go after 40 miles and our lunch stop, the afternoon unfolds with a relentless 12-mile switchback climb to 8,859 feet—the highest point in the park. I think it’s taken an hour and a half of nonstop climbing, sometimes at a tortuous 5-mph pace, but I can’t be sure, as Clemente and I are a little too woozy from open-mouthed panting to track it. As we gain altitude, the views grow increasingly expansive, stretching over sage-colored plains of buffalo herds and Wyoming’s famous snow
capped Tetons. At every switchback, the scenery changes like a theatrical set between acts, distracting us from the grueling physical effort. At the summit—10 degrees cooler than Roosevelt—we launch right into an exhilarating 5-mile descent into Canyon Village, scouted for us a few days prior by Palm Beach pal Dragana Connaughton and her family on a visit to the park. She had worried about our route because of new paving and loose gravel, and alerted us to the sketchy sections. LeMond lets his speedometer loose once again, followed by his group of disciples. This perfect day wraps up with a euphoric gathering in the slanted, early evening light over Yellowstone’s Lower Falls, marrying the day’s supreme fun with the sublime beauty of the most awe-inspiring spot in the park. That night in West Yellowstone, we chase racks of ribs with pitchers of beer and bask in the serotonin-infused glow of the ride, the place and the people. No one wants it to end, especially LeMond, and just before midnight we reluctantly turn homeward. The next day, the Fox family runs into Handfelt at Big Sky Resort’s busy base camp. He pulls his phone from his pocket and shows a text from LeMond sent at 2:30 that morning: “What are you up to? Most amazing day. I am happy.” u palmbeachillustrated.com | JANUARY 2012 83

J CRAFT TORPEDO 41 Sweden’s J Craft Boats used this year’s Palm Beach boat show to debut its breathtaking Torpedo 41 retro launch to the U.S. market. And it promptly sold its only two $1-million-plus demonstrators within the first hour. Inspired by the classic 1960s Riva Aquarama, the Torpedo combines la dolce vita style with bang-up-to-date technology and pure, indulgent luxury. Let us define luxury: Every Torpedo comes with a set of silver cutlery personally designed by Prince Carl Philip of Sweden. And a hand-carved Nardi wood steering wheel, which is a replica of the one used in the vintage Ferrari 250 GTO racecar. Measuring 41 feet, 4 inches bow to stern, this is nautical style and elegance at its finest—and the boat that’s guaranteed to spin heads

everywhere from St. Tropez to St. Barths, Palma to Palm Beach. Power comes from a pair of thundering Volvo Penta IPS 500 V8s cranking out 750 horsepower apiece—enough to blast the Torpedo to a top speed of 44 knots. And those magical IPS drives, with their forward-facing props and joystick controls, can walk the boat sideways away from the dock or spin it 360 degrees in its own length. Amazingly, the Torpedo can sleep five in reasonable comfort— two adults, two kids and a crew member. There’s even a double bed in a separate, though teeny, cabin. Pick pretty much any color scheme you want and the artisans at J Craft will oblige, though the choice of standard colors is wonderful. 1996 RIVA AQUARAMA Of course, if you want classic, retro styling in your luxury tender, why not buy the real thing? Like an original Riva Aquarama. The boating world was abuzz earlier this year when the very last Aquarama that had been sold to the public, the Hull Number 774, built in 1996, went under the hammer at the Mecum Vintage Wooden Boat auction in Kissimmee, Florida— and sold for a whopping $975,000. This was a remarkable boat. Bought new and owned by the founding family of the Sony Corp., it had fewer than than 20 hours on its twin Crusader 454 gas V8s and was in as-new condition. Not that $975,000 is big money for Aquaramas these days. Check the classifieds and most are in the $700,000 to $850,000 range, with only the older, less cared-for boats in the $400,000-$500,000 range. First introduced in 1962, its production ran for almost three decades. Even today, if you head to Monaco or St. Tropez, you’ll see these richly varnished mahogany runabouts gliding around the harbors or wafting to some exotic beach. This was the favored mode of water transport by the Hollywood jet-set while vacationing on the French Riviera. Sinatra, Monroe, Gable and Hayworth all sunned themselves on the Riva’s expansive rear sunpad. Rightly called the Ferrari of powerboats, Aquaramas were powered usually by twin Chrysler or Cadillac V8s ranging from 185-horsepower to more than 400 horses that gave a top speed of up to 45 knots. Like turning up at a swanky restaurant in a vintage Ferrari or Maserati, nothing says you’ve “arrived” more eloquently than being at the helm of a Riva Aquarama.

When does a sleek, sexy sports car morph into a sleek, sexy sports boat? Easy. When it’s a limited-edition Chris-Craft Silver Bullet 20—20 feet of pedal-to-the-metal, wind-in-the-hair nautical joy. Just 150 of these Silver Bullets are being handcrafted at Chris-Craft’s Sarasota, Florida, factory, each finished in shimmery silver paint and Coach tan or cream vinyl trim, plus Chris-Craft’s trademark teak decking and stainless-steel fixtures. This is just a wonderful little boat with sleek, gorgeous lines, an easyriding hull design and oodles of power from its standard 270-horsepower Volvo 5.0-liter V8 stern drive. Opt for the big 300-horse Mercury 350 V8, open her up and she’ll reach a top speed of 50 knots—that’s almost 58 mph. There are seats for five in the cozy cockpit; nicely bolstered, swiveling bucket seats for captain and first mate; and a wide bench for crew. It feels more like a big convertible sports car than a boat. There are even cupholders. And the detailing is just spectacular. As part of the Silver Bullet package, there’s a stunning silver carbon fiber instrument panel featuring classic Chris-Craft instruments. Pity, though, that the steering wheel looks like it came from Pep Boys. A wood-rimmed wheel to match all that teak would look wonderful. Of course, the beauty of the Silver Bullet is that, as it tips the scales at fewer than 3,000 pounds, it’s easy to tow behind your matching silver SUV.
AQUARIVA BY GUCCI Gucci scarf. Check. Gucci boatshoes. Check. Gucci boat bag. Check. And $1.2-million Aquariva by Gucci motor launch. Check, check, check. To celebrate the Italian fashion house’s ninetieth anniversary, Italy’s Riva—now part of the giant Ferretti Group—created this truly fabulous version of its striking 33-foot Aquariva launch. Frida Giannini, Gucci’s creative director couldn’t have put it better: “It is a symbol of a glamorous lifestyle that sparks fond memories of la dolce vita—a golden age when both Gucci and Riva attracted an enthusiastic following among the international jet-set.” Painted in Gucci’s trademark ultraglossy bright white, the boat is trimmed in waterproof white fabric featuring the distinctive Guccissima print and Gucci’s green-red-green detailing. There’s also a unique Gucci green crystal windscreen. All that stark white is complimented beautifully by Riva’s signature use of mahogany for the decks and transom step—mahogany that’s given 20 coats of clear varnish to give a mirror-like finish. And for the Aquariva, Gucci created special crisp, white cotton sheets for the cabin, together with a collection of Riva by Gucci accessories, such as silk scarves, terry-cloth towels, wash-bags and even flip-flops.
Powered by a pair of whisper-quiet 380-horsepower Yanmar diesels, the Aquariva can hit a top speed of 41 knots and run for 150 miles between fill-ups. The launch is available only on a made-toorder basis with a base price of $1.2 million. Those Riva by Gucci flip-flops? They’re extra.

HINCKLEY TALARIA 29R Hinckley has been building some of the most exquisite sailboats since 1928 and hasn’t lost one iota of its dedication to quality and craftsmanship. If someone described Hinckleys as the Rolls-Royce of boats, you’d quietly nod in agreement. That same dedication to quality goes into its Talaria series—29 feet of classic style and elegance coupled with the latest in technology, like composite Kevlar-reinforced construction and jet-drive propulsion. Two versions of the Talaria 29 are available: the 29C center console and the 29R roadster. Both are to-die-for, both will spin heads at any yacht club dock. But the R has the classic lines of some ’60s racy sports car, right down to its curved windshield and Ferrari-style helm. The beauty of the Talaria for us Floridians is its skinny 1-foot-9-inch draft, which will 96

take you into creeks and bays where others would fear to tread. Its secret is the Hamilton jet drive that replaces the traditional lowhanging propeller. Couple this with the standard Volvo 370-horse turbo diesel, or optional 440-horse Yanmar, and it will fly at 34 knots and turn on a dime, thanks to its bow thruster. And speaking of turning, Hinckley has developed what it calls its JetStick, which integrates the thruster and jet-drive in one fingertip-operated control. Climb aboard, and the Talaria 29R is a masterpiece of Old World boating charm, inspired by the likes of Gar Wood, Riva and Hacker; lots of mirror-gloss varnish, buttoned upholstery and shiny chrome. It’s absolutely gorgeous. As classic family runabouts go, this is about as good as it gets.
FJORD 36 OPEN
Length: 35’4” Beam: 11’11” Engines: 2 x 260-hp Volvo D4 or 300-hp D4 Price: from $250,000 fjordboats.com
If James Bond decided to trade his trusty Aston Martin for something a little saltier, this is what he’d steer—the new Fjord 36 Open. Looking like something built for the Navy SEALs, this 35-foot, 4-inch “stealth” boat is a scaled-down version of the Fjord 40 that shook the boating world when it debuted back in 2007. With its vast, open deck space; cushy, oversized stern lounging pads; and bow seating for eight, the 36 is very much the day boat for spearing across to the Bahamas for lunch at a rock-steady 40 knots. Power comes from twin 260-horsepower, or optional 300-horse, Volvo Penta D4 turbo-diesels linked to joystick-controlled stern drives that fire the Fjord on to the plane as if being launched from a catapult. Of course, this new 36 is all about edgy style, with its vertical bow, towering sides, trademark bolt-upright black T-top and raked-back, stand-alone windscreen and teak. Lots of teak. The fit and finish and attention to detail from this German-built rocket ship—Fjord is part of the giant Hanse boat building group— is sensational. The lift-up cleats, for example, are a true work of art. What’s surprising though, is that the designers mysteriously skipped some of the usual cockpit amenities for a boat this size— like an on-deck wet bar or even a sink. That means a trip down to the pretty confined day cabin. But no doubt 007 would have someone waiting for him, martini in hand, at the dock. u

We would be lost without our morning coffee. And we found a delicious one with a local connection. Hawaiian Gold Coffee is roasted locally but grown on the 900-acre Parry Estate in Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii. The estate is the largest sustainable coffee plantation in the United States, using agricultural practices that minimize the impact on the environment while maintaining the cultural and social conditions of its workers. Dark and rich, the coffee beans are sent to Jupiter, where they are roasted in small batches at the company’s state-of-the-art roasting facility. MAGIC TIME The Naples Winter Wine Festival’s great success in aiding underprivileged kids is no illusion. By MARK SPIVAK
TOM HARPER
Interested in hanging out with Oscar de la Renta, or attending Elton John’s annual White Tie and Tiara Ball? Or would you prefer to sip on a 35-bottle vertical collection of Château HautBrion, with the vintages personally selected by the director, Prince Robert of Luxembourg? If so, consider attending the annual Naples Winter Wine Festival, the most successful charity wine event in history. The festival raised $12 million last year for underprivileged children in Collier County, and has garnered an amazing $94.5 million since its inception in 2001. This year’s event will be held January 27-29, and the cost for the weekend is $8,500 per couple. A special prefestival event, the C’est Magique Honored Vintner wine tasting and lunch January 26 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, will be hosted by the festival’s 2012 Honored Vintner,
100 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED
Prince Robert, president/CEO of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the parent company of legendary Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion. A comparative tasting of five vintages from the two châteaux —1961, 1982, 1989, 1990 and 2000—will be presented, followed by lunch, featuring two additional rare vintages. The event will be moderated by James Molesworth of Wine Spectator magazine, and is limited to 70 guests at $2,500 per ticket. The festival begins on Friday with the Meet the Kids Day Tour and Grant Luncheon, and includes admission to one of Friday night’s exclusive Vintner Dinners, Saturday’s Gala Auction and Sunday’s Celebration Brunch. “As usual, all the money raised at Saturday’s auction will go directly toward helping children at risk,” says Bob Clifford, who is chairing this year’s festival along with his wife, Joan. “The impact on the community is immediate and tangible— you can see it and feel it.” The Cliffords purchased a second home in Naples about 10 years ago and became friends with Scott and Simone Lutgert, two trustees, who introduced them to the festival. They began as attendees, and decided to get involved after experiencing the Meet the Kids Day Tour. “We got to see where the money is being spent,” Clifford says, “and we were struck by seeing the vision of helping these children become a reality. It was something unique in the world of charity.”
In selecting this year’s Celebrity Chefs, the Cliffords looked for a balance between “old stalwarts and rising stars.” Familiar personalities such as Wolfgang Puck and Dean Fearing will be featured, along with newcomers including Charles Phan of San Francisco’s Slanted Door and Miami’s Michelle Bernstein. Tony Mantuano of Spiaggia in Chicago is Chef de Cuisine. On the wine side, there will be a contingent of top-tier Napa vintners such as Ann Colgin of Colgin Cellars, Dick Grace of Grace Family Vineyards, and Daphne and Bart Araujo of Araujo Estate Wines, as well as European superstars such as Prince Robert. “Naples owes so much to Napa,” Clifford says, “and we’re grateful for the generous support we receive from them.” The cornerstone of the festival is the Gala Auction, and this year’s event won’t disappoint. Several extraordinary days are in

store for the winning bidders of the “Wine, Women and Song” lot. The winners will experience a private tasting of Colgin Cellars wines and Bordeaux first growths, receive an in-depth tour of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with a private curator, attend the 2012 live finale of TV show American Idol, take home hand-painted bottles of the limited-edition fragrance Essence of IX, which
vintner Ann Colgin had created for herself, as well as create fragrances for themselves. Fans of Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select can purchase nine-liter bottles of the 1996, 1997 and 1998 vintages, eighteen 1.5-liter Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon (six each of the 1987, 1997 and 2007 vintages) and eighteen 750-ml bottles of 2007 Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, plus a luxury stay in Napa and dinner at The French Laundry. Automotive enthusiasts may bid on the extremely rare 2012 Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster, which will not be available in the United States at the time of the auction. “This year’s theme is ‘Believe in the Magic,’” Clifford says. “It’s a labor of love for everyone involved, as we have the opportunity to keep helping the 125,000 children, past and present, who have benefited from this event.” u

Hog snapper and Thai-style calamari (below) are menu favorites at Talay Thai.
Thai one on Chef Charlie Soo has created a cooking style that makes his Talay Thai a hit. By MARK SPIVAK
There are times when the American landscape seems blanketed with Thai restaurants, and with good reason. The cuisine is light and healthy, the ingredients are fresh and prepared with care and the dishes have an explosion of flavor that appeals to the most jaded diners among us. Finding a first-rate Thai restaurant, on the other hand, can frequently be a challenge. Talay Thai opened three years ago on the western end of PGA Boulevard, in a strip mall where many restaurants had tried and failed. Chef Charlie Soo started out as an investment banker but, as he puts it, “I grew up Thai and what Thai people do is run restaurants.” Soo has developed a cooking style that is an intriguing blend of power and delicacy, and that style has won him the following of a loyal band of regulars. Calligraphy and pieces of Thai art dot the walls of the restaurant, and stone Buddhas watch over you as you dine; white tablecloths are decorated with a single red anthurium. The large room contains a mezzanine level and an alcove, which breaks up the space and adds a sense of

privacy. Next to the dining room is a sizable horseshoeshaped wooden bar, a friendly place to congregate when you don’t feel like sitting down for a full meal. Make sure to begin with the Thai-style calamari ($9), a winner on many levels. The calamari rings are remarkably tender, and the tempura batter is fluffy and perfect. Served with a sweet chili dipping sauce, they seem to disappear in an instant. The summer rolls ($7) are equally ethereal—slices of shrimp, vegetables and fresh basil wrapped in rice paper, garnished with a slightly kicked-up plum sauce. The menu offers an assortment of noodle dishes (Pad Thai, Pad Siew and Pad Drunken) served with a choice of tofu, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork, as well as a variety of curries. This is one place, however, where the Chef’s Selections are worth following. Fresh jumbo sea

Hog snapper ($23), a recurring daily special, is grilled and placed on a bed of vegetables stir-fried with basil; the earthiness of the stir-fry is a nice foil for the rich texture of the fish. Meals here are dotted with a series of thoughtful touches. Main courses arrive at the table on individual burners, to keep them warm as you eat. When ordering, the servers will ask what level of spice you are comfortable with. Dishes are available on a scale of one through five, with a score of three being quite hot for Western palates. This is a time for honesty, not heroism. The wine list is short (perhaps 60 or 70 selections), filled with off-dry whites and soft, low-tannin reds that are an excellent match for this food. Mountain White Blend ($9) goes very well with some dishes, and a Singha (Thai beer, $3.50) is even better. Like everything else at Talay Thai, service is delightful. It’s easy to understand why the room is filled with a wide range of customers—groups of young people, families with children, and retired couples. After one visit, you’ll want to return. u

palate v dining out In Season Verdea Restaurant & Wine Bar is welcoming a new executive chef and a new seasonal menu. David Welch has been cooking professionally since he was a teenager and holds the title of certified executive chef by the American Culinary Federation after teaching culinary arts at Le Cordon Bleu. Welch will continue Verdea’s farm-to-table concept but will incorporate his own style, which is contemporary and tropical, using the freshest ingredients South Florida has to offer. The new menu will have a good variety of dishes, including the popular Florida Kobe meatloaf with cauliflower mash, tomato and tarragon ketchup, French beans and red wine demi, in addition to seasonal items. Such dishes include a late harvest farro risotto, and cider-braised acorn squash with ricotta gnocchi, pine nuts and sage brown butter. During a recent tasting, the root vegetable crusted black grouper with mango and roasted pepper gastrique and the honey-glazed diver scallops with arugula, radish and banana were standouts. Flipping For Burgers Burgers and fries get a gourmet twist at Burger Bar in Palm Beach Gardens. Headed up by James Beard award-winning chef Allen Susser, the menu features hand-shaped burgers made with a carefully crafted blend of meat and seasonings. The Beach Burger tops our list because it’s topped with applewoodsmoked bacon (along with Swiss cheese, housemade pickle chips and Chef Allen’s beach sauce). Upgrade to the tarragon and vinegar fries for an extra bite of flavor. Other interesting starters and sides include the conch fritters with mango cocktail sauce, creamy stone crab chowder, and the housemade onion dip and chips. And it’s not just beef that’s being served “burger-style.” The spicy tuna burger is a seriously thick slice of seared sushi-grade tuna steak, while the chimichurri Portobello burger is hearty enough for the biggest meat-eater. Also, Chef Allen is offering up his special Gold Leaf Burger, which is topped with edible 23-karat gold leaf. He is making only 500, for $25 each. Proceeds will go toward feeding hungry children in South Florida. What is a burger and fries without an adult milkshake? Slide on up to the bar and order a Nutella Bourbon shake or a Chocolate Black Russian. If you’re not looking to drink most of your calories, we suggest a cucumber basil martini or blueberry mojito garnished with a sprig of rosemary. If you’re in a “meat-all-around” mood, there is the Bacon-Maple Old Fashioned. Did we mention we love bacon? Burger Bar definitely is not your typical burger joint, but it might just become your usual hangout. (561-630-4545, burgerbar.com)

Most billiard rooms are found in family rooms or open spaces. The contemporary design of this Broken Sound home lent itself to a glass-enclosed space off the main gallery, offering plenty of light from both the outside and the skylights in the gallery ceiling, which flood the area with energy. The in-ground planters give the space an indoor-outdoor feel, enhancing the leisure experience. Susan Lachance Interior Design, Boca Raton (561-241-3800, susanlachance.com)

culture v Cellular Images In her early 20s, Klari Reis moved to England to earn a master’s degree in painting. While there, she also was treated for Crohn’s Disease. When a doctor let her look at her blood through a microscope, Reis saw artistic inspiration. She painted replicas of what was under the lens, eventually experimenting with petri dishes and epoxy polymer, a rubbery yet durable plastic she had worked with during her three years as an architect. Reis dyes the plastic different colors, then paints the inside covers of the petri dishes. “A lot of the natural reactions that can be seen within the paint are similar to reactions that happen inside the body,” she says. The dishes are attached to walls with steel rods and arranged at different lengths. Light passes through the dishes and reflects bright colors and images, which, Reis hopes, generates positive thinking. “It’s about happiness and having a hopeful outlook on technology in general and just a positiveness toward biotechnology,” she says. Hypochondria, pictured, an installation consisting of 150 petri dishes, will be displayed at Art Palm Beach, coming to the Palm Beach County Convention Center January 20-23. —Jennifer Pfaff

FIFTY YEARS in education has taught us you can fill their minds and open them at the same time.
Fifty years ago, we had a vision to create a school that stressed excellence in both academics and character, all in a nurturing, caring environment. Today, as an independent, co-educational school for Grades JK- 12, we are still building upon and perfecting those founding principles. Academically, 80% of the Class of 2011 was accepted at a college rated either Most Competitive or Highly Competitive by the 2011 Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges. We take special pride in our students’ cultural diversity, strength of character, and respect for others. As a result, a true sense of community exists among our educators, parents, and students. 3 9 0 0 J O G R O A D , B O C A R AT O N

Hilary Geary Ross has been part of the Palm Beach, New York and Southampton social scenes her entire life. In fact, it’s her job: She writes a Palm Beach column for the New York Social Diary website, chronicles social activities worldwide for Quest magazine and is the author of photographer Harry Benson’s new coffee table book, New York, New York, which showcases the city’s most famous residents. The greatgranddaughter of inventor Thomas E. Murray, Ross lives in Palm Beach, where she serves on the board of the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. She is married to investor Wilbur Ross and has two sons and two stepdaughters. 10
