FROM CITY TO OCEAN, THE FINE ART OF PALM BEACH LIVING

NICKOLAS SARGENT

DESIGN Something Old, SOMETHING NEW

When New York designer Scott Sanders of Scott Sanders Interior Design and his husband were searching for a seasonal home after opening a design studio in Palm Beach, he found this mid-century apartment that had not been touched since the original owner bought it in the 1970s. With the postmodern-style complex designated as a historic landmark, Sanders was eager to preserve the integrity and character of the original design while connecting the interiors with the stark-white architecture of the oceanfront facade.

“The untouched interiors ended up containing countless antiques and vintage pieces that wanted to be brought back to life,” he says. “These existing covet-worthy pieces allowed me to merge the past with contemporary to create a design with significant depth and history.”

By mixing in new pieces sourced on West Palm Beach’s Antique Row, adding pops of color and art, and playing off of the original cypress walls and Mexican tile floor, Sanders created a “Palm Beach eclectic” vibe that evokes a playful, happy atmosphere and stimulates conversation.

“We did not want a cookie-cutter design,” Sanders adds. “Instead, we made it personal and suitable to our life in Palm Beach, which consists of frequent entertaining by the beach and pool. It is filled with unusual pieces that we have acquired over time, as well as dachshund memorabilia, as our mini dachshund, Bailey, is the unofficial building mascot. It is our version of Palm Beach camp.” (scottsandersllc.com) –Liza Grant Smith
