With the Wind IN MIND
Winds of change are blowing in West Palm Beach, particularly in Rosemary Square, where the past several years have wrought a reimagining of the neighborhood’s future. At its north end, the recently completed 360 Rosemary delivers 20 stories of Class A office space, and a 20-foot-tall art piece at its entrance grants depth.
Material (SG) II was commissioned by Related Companies (related.com) from BritishNigerian artist Yinka Shonibare to serve as the crowning touch of the tower’s outdoor plaza. The installation is part of Shonibare’s “Wind Sculpture” series, which has been exhibited around the world, from the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. to the Ndubuisi Kanu Park in Lagos.
The hand-painted fiberglass sculpture captures the essence of wind in a colorful patterned fabric regarded as traditional African cloth—Indonesian batik patterns that were produced in Dutch factories and sold to West African colonies in the 1800s. The work represents global migration, the interconnectedness of our hybridized modern world, and the invisible power of nature.
