Art and culture are at the dawn of an exciting era with the release of CreativeBroward 2020: A Plan for Cultural and Economic Development in Broward County. More than 100 community volunteers guided it into a local cultural vision for the next 10 years. It calls for organizing economic development of the creative industries for the first time as a unified cultural sector. Commercial and nonprofit, individual and organizational, fine and popular arts, culture and heritage—these formerly disparate elements can be leveraged for greater economic impact. It makes recommendations for developing collaborative, self-reliant and sustainable resources within the creative sector. Surveys show virtually every Broward resident regularly engages in personal cultural activities, including reading books, taking photographs or dancing. The plan calls for a festival of creativity,

combining high-profile curated events with a longer, self-selected “Fringe Festival.” This aims to define and celebrate Broward’s unique cultural identity, built on an international reputation for excellent public art and design and founded on the county’s diversity and creativity. Florida Grand Opera Celebrating its 70th season of presenting world-class performances, Florida Grand Opera is one of the state’s leading companies, producing a classic repertoire rich in romance, drama and adventure as well as lesser-known works from the great composers. Historic Stranahan House Museum

Built in 1901 by Frank Stranahan (the “Father of Fort Lauderdale”) and wife Ivy (the city’s first school teacher), Stranahan House was the epicenter of the area’s activity. Initially designed as a trading post for Seminole Indians, it also served as a community center, post office and bank for local businessmen. Originally the largest house on the New River, it has been preserved to offer a glimpse into Florida’s pioneer life. Legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman amazes in the most extraordinary ways. BY JASON DAVIS

Among the many achievements of violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman during the 50-plus years since his American debut, it’s one thing he apparently did not do that sometimes earns lavish praise. In 1995, as the legend goes, Perlman completed a concert at New York’s Avery Fisher Hall with an instrument that lost a string midway through the performance. His adjustments and recalculations on the fly brought the audience to its feet with thunderous applause for one of the greatest examples of classical improvisation ever witnessed. A newspaper columnist wrote about the moment a few years later, but there was one problem: He didn’t actually see it for himself and was simply relaying what he had heard. And none of the New York critics had mentioned such an incident in their-next day concert reviews, either, as they surely would have, as Perlman purportedly told the crowd that “sometimes it is the artist’s task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have”—a quote deserving of immediate induction into the pages of Bartlett’s. Where the anecdote started is unknown, despite the efforts of urban-legend researchers. But, despite the lack of independent verification, it remains a tidy and inspirational—albeit apocryphal—tale about overcoming your challenges. Maybe it’s because we’re willing to believe such a thing is plausible for someone of Perlman’s seemingly limitless ability. In his 1999 “Letter to Artists,” Pope John Paul II used those words to reaffirm the unyielding bond between art and faith. To be sure, this bond is not unique to Christianity, but it is especially significant given how it has shaped Western civilization’s art, history and culture for more than 2,000 years. Ever since the earliest Christians secretly drew religious symbols on walls when they were persecuted for their beliefs, art has been used to help even the illiterate understand the tenets of the faith. Now, some 500 years after the founding of the Vatican’s museums, the creation of St. Peter’s Basilica and Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, many of those treasures are coming to South Florida for a three-month exhibition at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. Vatican Splendors: A Journey Through Faith and Art is one of the largest collections of art, documents and historically important objects from the Vatican ever to tour North America. More than 200 items are featured, including paintings by Giotto and Il Guercino, sculpture by Bernini, Michelangelo’s tools, a reliquary containing the remains of St. Peter and of St. Paul, mosaics, papal jewels and more. “This exhibition isn’t just about Catholicism, or even Christianity, really,” says Irvin Lippman, the museum’s executive director. “It’s about religion itself. How do artists exhibit their faith? How do we exhibit our faith? While we certainly hope this opens a very public conversation about religion, it’s just as much about history. And art is the visual history of our civilization.” The Museum of Art has mounted a number of popular exhibitions of religious works in the past, including a 2003 showing of papal artifacts and a 2006 exploration of the shared roots of Judaism and Christianity. Lippman says the unique nature of Vatican Splendors, which ends its three-city run in Fort Lauderdale (after stops in St. Louis and Pittsburgh), as well as the region’s robust Catholic heritage could make it one of the museum’s most popular exhibitions ever, perhaps rivaling the 2005 King Tut exhibition that drew 650,000 visitors over four months.

Walk the Talk Explore the city on the river like a native, with monthly tours that showcase its rich history. BY JASON DAVIS

The story of Alexander “Sandy” Nininger exceeds the limits of ink on paper. You really have to hear it for yourself. Oh, sure, the written word says plenty. Good high school student. West Point graduate. Fought in the Pacific during World War II. Died in combat. Posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The spoken word, however, gives Nininger true dimension. Founder of the Key Club at Fort Lauderdale High. Nominated to the U.S. Military Academy by city leaders. Entered the war as a lieutenant, promoted quickly. Fought while wounded three times in the legendarily bloody battle for Bataan. Died in singlehanded combat well behind enemy lines. The war’s first Medal of Honor recipient. All before age 24. It’s the kind of story you’ll hear—and never forget—when you take part in the monthly docentled walking tours of Old Fort Lauderdale. Presented by the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, the tour explores the city’s roots—going back to a time before it even was a city—and brings a fascinating past to life. From the 1905 New River Inn to the modern Broward Center (where a monument to Nininger stands along the waterfront) and back, the mile-long tour along the Riverwalk is a mustdo for anyone interested in seeing aspects of the 24

city that are easily missed by car. Where did the Seminole Indians make arrowroot flour? Who was Count Nugent, and why does he have a road named after him? Why was Mediterranean Revival architecture so popular here? What’s the deal with the Acetylene Building? These answers and many more reveal themselves on every expedition. Tour groups stay reasonably sized, which allows participants to satisfy their individual thirst for knowledge. “When the groups are smaller, people tend to ask more questions,” says Kent Planck, one of several tour leaders. “They feel more comfortable speaking up, and I try to engage them whenever possible by asking them what they think, such as why Fort Lauderdale got its start where it did, or which building [in a particular place] is older, etc.” You don’t have to be a history buff to appreciate this intimate look at the city. Seeing how much the city has transformed itself since its earliest days, from tropical outpost to bustling metropolis, is enough to give anyone pause. “In many ways, Fort Lauderdale’s story is Florida’s story—constant change,” says Ellen Ferrelli, the Society’s educational services director. “And change is always more fascinating when you know where you started from.”

ing childbirth; and Ivy’s father, who died of old age. Skeptical? You’re not alone. Even Schotanus isn’t completely sold on the premise of ghostly visitors. But she also doesn’t have an explanation, either, for the photograph (pictured above, center) she took in November 2009—which stands alone in a series of digital images in which the ethereal apparition is not otherwise seen. She says the image has not been altered in any way. She took the photo during one of the museum’s weekly River Ghost Tours, an increasingly popular, family-friendly event in which visitors are invited to attempt to stir the house’s spirits with dowsing rods and cameras, followed by a boat ride on the New River, during which they’re regaled with tales of colorful, early Fort Lauderdale characters who lived along the banks and are said to come back and visit from time to time. For those who don’t believe in the great beyond, Schotanus stresses the historical aspects of the tour. “Our priority is focusing on the history of the era,” she says. “And some of that history deals with superstitions and traditions. As for the rest, we’re only sharing what the paranormal experts have concluded.” But, she adds, there are plenty who do believe—and there are excellent opportunities to satisfy their curiosity. A team from Realm Chasers Paranormal, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to researching unexplained phenomena, holds monthly seminars at Stranahan House to teach visitors how to conduct their own investigations, from technique to equipment. Either way, you’re left with a tale to tell. “Clearly, there are people who are more sensitive to these things than others,” Schotanus says. “I think it’s fascinating that they can tune in on something that not everyone can. If nothing else, it makes you think.”

“When I walk into a hotel space,” says iconoclastic design expert Clodagh O’Kennedy, “I want all of the senses to feel enlivened.” It seems many of Fort Lauderdale’s leading luxury hotels and resorts have taken her words to heart. By combining comfortable places to stay with intriguing and energizing art, in its many forms, they have happily accepted the challenge. At W Fort Lauderdale, for example, this is certainly true. Opened in 2009, the hotel consulted with Clodagh (known professionally by only her first name) to create its overall design. The result was a comprehensive stylebook that outlines nearly every aspect of the décor, such as using ocean waves as inspiration and incorporating found and fine art objects throughout the hotel, which has been hailed for its modern, cutting-edge appearance. Indeed, big names in the art world have made their presence in other area luxury hotels as well. At il Lugano Suite Hotel, glass works inspired by some of the world’s best known artists take center stage in the lobby—from a unique hand-blown chandelier to numerous plates and vases—and create a visual mood that carries throughout the gracious boutique hotel, which opened in 2008. Elsewhere, art assumes any number of dimensions. Start with the classic: Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale features a nautical theme throughout its 24 stories. From its glass exterior to its curving walls, the design brings to mind a Golden Era lux28

ury ocean liner. But the hotel’s oceanfront bar really brings it all home with a 13-foot centerpiece mural of King Neptune, created by Canadian artist C. Perreault and inspired by the 1880 painting, King Neptune and His Horses. Then expand your definition: Marriott Harbor Beach sets an artful tone—literally—with carefully coordinated in-house ambient music, from lighter sounds in the morning to upbeat and jazzy numbers at night. Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six Resort & Spa, meantime, proudly showcases its architecture—a tower with a revolving restaurant on top, built in 1964 and still one of the most easily identifiable landmarks of the city’s skyline. It runs deeper, of course, as many area hotels offer direct support of the local arts and entertainment community through special offers, partnerships and promotions. What’s for Dessert? Chocolate, of course—with local restaurants offering deliciously decadent treats. BY BEN SCHILLING

The ancient Mayans were first to understand the beauty of chocolate. They roasted and ground cocoa seeds into a powder, mixed it with water and spices and consumed lustily. It wasn’t just a favorite food—it was essential to their lives. Not much has changed in 1,000 years. We still love chocolate. Frequently, we crave it. It soothes, it energizes, it delights, and it’s essential to our social lives—a night on the town almost always comes with dinner, and a memorable dinner almost always comes with dessert. At notable restaurants in and near the Riverwalk A&E District, there are many sweet endings to choose from. At Truluck’s, in the Galleria shopping center, the signature dessert is the Chocolate Sack. Approximately the shape and size of a small paper bag—hence the name—it is filled with yellow sponge cake, berries and frosting. The trick is deciding how to eat it: digging into the edible package with a spoon, or attacking it with fork and knife? Either way is fine, says associate manager Tom Karl, who adds that chocolate lovers often return for this treat. The best-selling dessert, however, is the carrot cake with fresh pineapple and sweet cream cheese icing. “Either choice is tremendous,” he says. Dessert lovers agree. Another favorite is the Crème Brûlée Trio at 15th Street Fisheries, at Lauderdale Marina. It features vanilla, coffee and chocolate crème portions, with the chocolate (infused with tarragon to impart a light but intriguing after-note) receiving the most attention, says executive chef Lenny Judice. “It’s been a major hit since we added it to the menu [in Spring 2010],” he says. “It’s going to be around for a while.” YOLO, on East Las Olas Boulevard, is known for a warm bread pudding that includes chocolate chips folded in, along with raisins and pecans. Checking in at about 4 inches in diameter, it’s served with vanilla bean 30

ice cream, caramel sauce and seasonal fruit. “There’s just such a wow factor when you see the size of it,” says chef/ partner Peter Boulukos, “and again when you taste it.” Hotel dining is no exception. Da Campo Osteria at il Lugano features a chocolate chip soufflé constructed tableside and presented in a cast-iron vessel, topped with mocha gelato and mascarpone anglaise. Shula’s on the Beach at Westin Beach Resort, meanwhile, showcases its Perfect Season Seven-Layer Chocolate Cake, a simple-but-decadent slice of cake standing nearly 5 inches high, with chocolate cream frosting and chocolate shavings. Nearby, The Grateful Palate on Southeast 17th Street might be an exception to the rule. Though it offers several chocolate dishes, the most popular dessert is the cool, refreshing Indulgence, says manager Adam Irvin. A blend of tropical sorbet made in-house, passion fruit curd and a crisp meringue topping, it’s a mainstay on the restaurant’s ever-changing menu.

Natural Wonders Made of earth elements and inspired by the past, today’s fashion accessories can add an artful touch of casual sophistication to any evening on the town. BY BEN SCHILLING

Staying “fashionable” is an ever-changing concept, always susceptible to shifting tastes and sensibilities. But given our culture’s growing passion for the environment and all things eco-friendly, perhaps it comes as no surprise that one emerging highfashion trend for the 2010-11 season—if not beyond—is a nod to Mother Earth. Accessories made from organic materials—such as wood, bone, leather and coral—are rapidly gaining in popularity. Experts say chic necklaces, bracelets, watches and earrings are taking inspiration from nautical, tribal and traditional looks, and anyone hoping to stay on the leading edge of style for a night on the town should consider themselves advised accordingly. For men, leather watchbands are regaining their classic-elegance luster after several years of taking a back seat to metal and rubber. For women, ornate wood bangles are especially hip, either in vibrant colors—reds, yellows and blues—or with bone or mother of pearl overlay. That’s not to say precious metals and stones are out of vogue. Robin Levinson, owner of Levinson Jewelers on Las Olas Boulevard, is a proponent of mixing media when it comes to accessories. “You can mix the natural look with diamonds to nicely show off an elegant piece,” she says. Tom Wesselmann Draws

A Cincinnati native who came to New York City in 1956 to attend classes at Cooper Union, Tom Wesselmann was one of the originators of Pop Art. Along with Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Robert Indiana, Wesselmann created a body of works that helped define America’s visual identity in the 1960s. Chiefly a figurative painter with a special affinity for the nude female form, Wesselmann became famous for a series of paintings begun in 1961 that he called The Great American Nude. This exhibition spans more than four decades, from 1959 to his 2004 death, and includes more than 100 works, many large in scale and created

GETTING AROUND It’s easy to explore the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District.

“The District” refers generally to the area of downtown Fort Lauderdale beginning at Avenue of the Arts (to the west) and continuing along the Riverwalk, Himmarshee Boulevard and Las Olas Boulevard almost as far as the Intracoastal Waterway (to the east). It is located near Fort Lauderdale’s famous beaches and only minutes away from major highways, Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Whether you come by car or cab, arrive by water taxi or Sun Trolley, a fantastic experience is in store. Once you’re there, getting around is easy. Most attractions are within an easy walk. Alternatively, just wave and the Sun Trolley will stop for you and take you to your next District destination. Or, for a real Riverwalk treat, travel by rickshaw from place to place.

TRAVELING BY CAR • FROM INTERSTATE 95: Exit Broward Boulevard east. Right on Avenue of the Arts (Southwest Seventh Avenue). Left on Himmarshee Street (Southwest Second Street). Parking available in garages along this street before and after railroad tracks and at Las Olas Riverfront. To access Las Olas Boulevard, turn right on Andrews Avenue and left on Las Olas Boulevard. • FROM FEDERAL HIGHWAY (U.S. 1): Broward Boulevard west. Left on Andrews Avenue. Right on Southwest Second Street. Parking available in garages along this street before and after railroad tracks and at Las Olas Riverfront. To access Las Olas Boulevard, continue on Andrews Avenue past Southwest Second Street and turn left on Las Olas Boulevard. • PARKING: Metered spaces are available. The Arts & Entertainment Garage, located at the corner of Southwest Fifth Avenue and Southwest Second Street, anchors the west end of The District.
