Heart and soul
I’m an animal lover through and through, and anyone who has devoted their life to helping animals is a winner in my book. Such is the case with the gang at nonprofit Equine Rescue & Adoption Foundation in Palm City, who spend their days rescuing abandoned and neglected horses and finding them new homes.
I didn’t grow up around horses, so I am admittedly not super comfortable around them. But when I visited ERAF this summer to chat with Board President Elaine Hines and her staff of just a few full-time employees and many volunteers, I was immediately calmed by the serenity of the place. It was as if I could feel the energy of these horses, finally at peace, grateful for their new home, and hopeful for their future. I was timid around a few of the still-human-shy animals, but I fell in love with an Appaloosa named Gucci, a blind horse who has had both eyes removed and is the gentlest soul.
Gucci has already been adopted by one of ERAF’s caring board members, but many of his roommates at the farm still need homes. I urge you to take a ride up there and visit with these animals, whether you are a horse lover with the desire and means to take in a new animal or just want to spend some time with these sweeties. Turn to page 30 to learn more about ERAF.
Another great day in Palm City was spent with 17-year-old Sophie Araque-Liu. In case you haven’t heard, Sophie, a Martin County High School senior, was named the grand prize winner of this year’s national Doodle for Google contest. She beat kids from all across the country to take top honors, winning a $30,000 academic scholarship, $50,000 in technology for MCHS, and global recognition for her artwork, which was showcased on the Google home page for a day. Get to know more about our cover star on page 20.
Finally, I want to make sure everyone knows that Flavor Martin County is launching this month for the first time ever. You may be familiar with Flavor Palm Beach, a monthlong foodie event that takes place across Palm Beach County every September, where restaurants offer special prix fixe menu deals to the community. Well, the Treasure Coast now has its own Flavor month in October, with dozens of participating restaurants in Martin and St. Lucie counties! To find out which eateries are taking part in Flavor Martin County this year and view sample menus, visit flavormartin.com
Enjoy the issue, and please feel free to reach out anytime at the email address below.
Peace and blessings,
Michelle Lee Ribeiro michelle@stuartmagazine.com @mleeribA season of giving
October marks the start of season on the Treasure Coast, and Stuart Magazine is raring and ready to go with the many events we will be sponsoring over the coming months. The inaugural Flavor Martin County also launches this month, and I could not be more excited for our neck of the woods to enjoy some flavorful deals. Please take advantage of this delicious opportunity to support local restaurants.
I am so thankful for the friends and business associates I was able to spend time with over the past few months. Summer is always a great time to reflect on the community and to focus on the many causes we support. Palm Beach Media Group publishes more than 30 magazines in Florida, from Vero Beach to Miami to Naples. And with such reach and influence comes a responsibility to support local organizations, their causes, fundraisers, and events.
To jump-start our altruistic endeavors, we’ve compiled a list of charities and organizations you can support in our annual Charity Datebook (page 59). Each organization’s listing includes a little bit about its mission and an event you can attend to show your support. If there is a local organization you would like Stuart Magazine to work with in the future, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
October also heralds the holidays, with Halloween kicking things off. Although my husband and I no longer roam the neighborhood trick-or-treating with our kids, we still enjoy a few adult-themed Halloween activities. It’s always a treat to see costumed little ones toddling about on All Hallows’ Eve, even as we adapt to the comfort of our largely empty nest.
We invite you to enjoy our October issue and to continue visiting stuartmagazine.com, where you can sign up for our Insider’s Guide weekly newsletter to keep up with current events and news.
As we enter another season, I am honored to continue to represent our community and support our local causes and businesses. I’m here to help in any way that I can.

HOW
by HOLLY MARTINEZAHollywood star missing in action and a faked death? The story of Tonka the chimpanzee’s rescue plays out like a true crime podcast—but this time, there’s a happy ending.
Tonka, who turns 31 this month, is a former animal actor known for his roles in George of the Jungle and Buddy. When Tonka hit adolescence, he retired from acting and was eventually given to the Missouri Primate Foundation. When the facility— which PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) sued for violating the Endangered Species Act—shut down, Tonka ended up with an exotic-animal broker named Tonia Haddix.
Earlier this year, the Missouri woman was court-ordered to surrender Tonka and her seven other chimpanzees.
But Haddix claimed Tonka was dead. And PETA, along with Tonka’s former co-star Alan Cumming, launched a nationwide search for the animal, whom they weren’t so sure was really deceased. Thanks to an anonymous source, the case was solved this past June: Tonka was indeed alive, living caged in Haddix’s basement.
PETA took immediate action, and Tonka was rescued. The organization contacted Fort Pierce–based sanctuary Save the Chimps, and within days Tonka arrived at his new home on

Local SPOOK
Discover all things spooky in a new book by Chicago-based writer Selena Fragassi. Adapted from Ghosts of the Treasure Coast by history buffs and longtime locals Patrick and Patricia Mesmer, Fragassi’s The Ghostly Tales of the Treasure Coast takes readers through a series of haunted secrets and ghoulish fun pulled right from local history. the Treasure Coast. The 150-acre chimp sanctuary currently houses 221 resident chimps who live in 12 families on separate “islands” within the property. After living in captivity for years, the chimps all have control over their own lives and are treated to lifelong care by an expert medical team, nutritious meals, and enrichment activities.
“We provide chimps with a life as close as possible to what they would have in the wild,” says Save the Chimps CEO Ana Paula Tavares. “Tonka has been doing really well and has access to the outdoors and other chimpanzees—things he did not have previously.”
In July, Save the Chimps (which is the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world) embarked on another rescue mission, this time in partnership with FedEx. Seven chimps, who had worked in show business and/ or been used for lab experiments and were living out their retirement at a California refuge needed a new home when theirs was threatened by wildfires. The group was flown to Save the Chimps as part of FedEx’s “Delivering Good” initiative, where they were socially integrated following a 60-day quarantine. The chimps were dubbed the “Sunrise Seven,” as Fort Pierce is known as the Sunrise City.
Save the Chimps is not open to the public, but Treasure Coast residents can show support by donating to help cover the daily cost of care, by bidding on items through the sanctuary’s online “All Things Chimp” auction November 4-13, or by running in the sanctuary’s eighth annual Chimpathon race November 13. savethechimps.org
Family Fun
READY, SET, PLAY!
New life is being breathed into the Treasure Coast Square shopping center this winter, thanks to Elev8 Fun, an entertainment concept featuring 115,000 square feet of arcade games, bowling, go-kart racing, laser tag, axe throwing, and more. Set to open in early 2023, Elev8 Fun will take over the former Sears retail space and will be the brand’s third location, following Tampa and Sanford. “Retail stores were the predominant factor in mall foot traffic, and what we’re doing is becoming the new anchor for malls and revitalizing the spaces,” says Elev8 Fun and PrimeTime Amusements owner David Goldfarb. elev8fun.com —Holly Martinez

Sustainable Swaps
by EMILY PANTELIDESWhen I was asked to create an eco-friendly roundup of items to replace your otherwise wasteful/ harmful products, I’ll admit I expected to find products that sacrifice performance or luxury. But it turns out, I found some total game changers!
I’ll start with something you probably don’t think much about being eco-friendly: your cookware. Our Place makes this versatile, ethically sourced, and sustainably produced piece called the Always Pan, which is designed to replace eight pieces of cookware. I adore the range of colors—my fave is this bright, vibrant blue!
By now, we all know that plastic water bottles have got to go. Try this innovative self-cleaning water-filtration bottle by Larq, which eradicates almost all bacteria. It was recently featured on Shark Tank and comes in a variety of beautiful colors.
This body serum by Uni is like nothing I’ve ever tried before. It’s so hydrating and not greasy at all—and the packaging is plastic-free, reusable, and refillable.
You can be eco-conscious when you sleep too—with an Avocado mattress. The company’s Green Mattress is 100-percent organic and the world’s only climateneutral certified mattress. It’s produced with materials from the company’s farms, which are powered entirely by renewable energy.
Locally, I love One World Zero Waste in Tequesta, a store dedicated to a cleaner tomorrow. On a recent visit, one of the owners introduced me to these snack bags that you can just pop in the washer and reuse. Their biggest seller is the NonPaper Towels. The 100-percent cotton flannel towels cling to each other and fit right on a paper towel holder, and they come in endless patterns.
I’m pleased to report I’ve made the switch in so many aspects of my life thanks to these picks, and I hope you will too! xo, Emily

Global Sensation
Meet Sophie Araque-Liu , the Palm City teen who became a household name when she recently had her artwork displayed as Google’s home page doodle
by KERRY SHORRFor Sophie Araque-Liu, the path from art novice to this year’s national Doodle for Google champion began with a creative attempt to escape the doldrums of school. “When I was about 7 years old, I took Mandarin lessons on Sundays and would kind of space out and draw the whole time,” recalls Araque-Liu, now 17. “I became good at art, but I don’t know a word of Chinese anymore.”
The Palm City resident credits her father, a mathematician, for passing down his love of doodling. “I learned a lot from my dad,” says the Martin County High School senior. “We used to draw together all the time. He’d draw people and animals, and I would try to copy them.”
In seventh grade, she competed in her first Doodle for Google contest. The annual themed art competition geared toward K-12 students awards one grand prize winner a $30,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 technology package for their school, and the opportunity to have their doodle emblazoned on the search engine’s landing page for an entire day.
After entering her doodles three years in a row, she had decided to give up on the competition. But then she heard what the theme was for 2022: “I Care for Myself By...” At the time, Araque-Liu was struggling with performance anxiety heightened by the pandemic, and the theme really spoke to her. “What helped me the most during that time was accepting support from my family and friends, so I wanted to focus my artwork on that,” she says. “I also thought it was a message other people needed to hear.”
In her digital illustration, Not Alone,
Araque-Liu and her mother are portrayed in a loving embrace incorporated into the Google logo. “It felt right because it’s such an intimate form of love,” she says. “It’s comforting just knowing someone is there to support you.”
Not Alone impressed the public, whose votes made Araque-Liu Florida’s state winner in July, landing her a spot as a national finalist. A month later, she beat out all the other state finalists when Google’s panel of celebrity judges— including pop star and actress Selena Gomez—unanimously selected her artwork as the grand prize winner.
Araque-Liu has recently begun applying to colleges and plans on getting a degree in engineering. “Maybe at the University of Florida, which has a very good program,” she says. “I also love art, and I’m considering incorporating architecture so I can keep both things in my life.”
Here, she shares takeaways from her whirlwind experience this summer.
What was your mindset going into Doodle for Google this year?
I was thinking about what I had gone through with my mental health. I used to be the type of person who would bottle everything up and try pushing through it alone. But I’ve come to realize that it’s okay not to shoulder the burden all on your own. That was the message I tried to communicate in Not Alone. I also wanted to thank my parents and friends for all their support, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to do that.
Were your parents aware of your struggles with anxiety?
Whenever I wasn’t feeling well, I would shut myself in my room. We’re all online these days, so it’s easy to withdraw into yourself. But eventually, I came out and discussed what I was feeling, and my parents were very supportive. It started with one conversation that had to be unpacked over a longer course of time.
What advice would you give to others dealing with anxiety?
I would encourage people to understand that those around them care and love them. They also want to help. Anxiety
isn’t something you should be embarrassed to talk about.
How did you find out you won the contest?
Google had requested a Zoom interview with me this summer, saying it was for their social media channels. I figured they were doing interviews with all the finalists. During our conversation, the interviewer said she needed to speak with a coworker and turned the camera off for a minute. When it came back on, Selena Gomez was seated in the chair! She congratulated me and told me I was the national winner of Doodle for Google. I was so shocked and amazed!
What else did you and Selena chat about?
I think she said she loved my artwork and the message behind it, about seeking help when you need it. I was kind of blubbering the whole time, which is too bad because I remember thinking that if I got the chance to meet Selena, there were so many things I wanted to say to her. We talked for maybe 10 minutes.
What was it like seeing your artwork posted on the Google home page in August?
Incredible! I’ll be honest, I kept Googling random things just to see it up there. It made me smile. It was insanely cool knowing so many people around the world would see it and the message behind it. ❖
On-the-Go Snacks Simple,
Don’t let a fast-paced lifestyle propel you down a path of unhealthy snacking. Certified nutrition coach Kat Warner shares five wholesome snack ideas that are easy to prep and nosh on the go.
by LIZA GRANT SMITHNUT BUTTER AND APPLE SLICES
Pair apple slices with the protein-packed nut butter of your choice (avoid those with added sugars or sweeteners, even in the form of honey) for a quick pick-me-up with long-lasting effects. Squeeze fresh lemon on apples to prevent browning and boost vitamin C.
Make it simple: Purchase pre-packaged portions of nut butter like Justin’s Classic Almond Butter and speed up prep with an apple slicer and corer.
EGGS AND CRACKERS
Hard-boiled eggs are not only quick and convenient, but they are also high in protein, relatively low in calories, and have a complete range of amino acids. Plus, they’re packed with B vitamins, zinc, calcium, and vitamin D. Multigrain crackers have a whole-grain base that can easily boost fiber, and
any added seeds or nuts will increase heart-healthy fats.
Make it simple: An egg cooker allows you to make multiple hard-boiled eggs at a time with the touch of a button. Once cooled to room temperature, store the eggs in the fridge for up to a week.
STEAMED EDAMAME
VEGGIES AND HUMMUS
Pair anti-inflammatory veggies like carrots, cucumber, celery, or bell peppers with hummus to support heart health.
Make it simple: Two-compartment snack containers make meal-prep a breeze.
Edamame is a complete protein and provides all the essential acids the body needs that it can’t produce on its own. High in protein and fiber, edamame is also a great way to maintain a healthy weight by allowing your body to feel full longer and metabolize nutrients more slowly and effectively.
Make it simple: Opt for pre-shelled edamame that can be steamed right in the bag for heat-and-eat ease.
TRY THIS!
PROTEIN SMOOTHIE
This super shake is as filling as a meal, so divide it in half for a light snack.
Make it simple: Prepare preportioned baggies with fruits and veggies and store them in the freezer for easy access. For less cleaning and fewer steps, use a blender that allows you to make the smoothie directly in a cup you can take with you.
Warner shares one of her favorite smoothie recipes
Ingredients:
8-12 oz. milk (whatever type you prefer)
1 scoop protein powder
1-2 cups fresh spinach or kale
1-2 handfuls frozen fruit (like berries or sliced banana)
1 tbsp. nut butter or chia seeds
Combine ingredients in blender and enjoy!

Surviving and Thriving
THROUGH HER NONPROFIT, BOLD AND BREASTLESS, PORT ST. LUCIE RESIDENT SHONDIA MCFADDEN-SABARI INSPIRES AND ADVOCATES FOR WOMEN AND FAMILIES IMPACTED BY BREAST CANCER
by PAIGE BOWERSShortly after her husband returned from his second deployment in Iraq, Shondia McFadden-Sabari had a sudden, strange feeling that she needed a mammogram. “It just came to me, and I thought, ‘This is weird,’” says the mother of two of that unforgettable Thursday in December 2010.
McFadden-Sabari was 36 at the time and had never felt any lumps when doing self-checks, but there was breast
cancer on the paternal side of her family. She had a doctor’s appointment the next day anyway, so she mentioned it to her doctor, who ordered a mammogram. Just before Christmas, she scheduled a diagnostic mammogram as well as a biopsy. She figured it was better to be safe than sorry.
Doctors found abnormal cells in both breasts. “I was shocked when I heard the words, ‘You have breast cancer,’” she recalls. “I actually thought it was
probably a mistake, especially since I didn’t feel any lumps in my breasts or have any other symptoms.” Luckily, doctors caught the cancer before it spread to neighboring tissue. As a result, she didn’t have to endure chemotherapy or radiation.
Still, she opted to undergo a double mastectomy—and decided against having any reconstruction done. “I wanted them to get this cancer out of me,” she says. “I wasn’t interested in having anything resembling a breast. I just wanted to live my life with my husband and kids. Cancer affected my breasts, not my self-esteem.”
Feisty and full of faith, McFadden-Sabari has thrived in the 12 years since she was diagnosed. The Port St. Lucie resident shares her inspirational story with other breast cancer patients and their families on the Treasure Coast and across the country as she educates and advocates for them through her nonprofit, Bold and Breastless. Locally, she has worked at area hospitals and churches such as Cleveland Clinic Martin Health’s Cancer Center in Stuart and Greater Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church in Fort Pierce. Providing emotional support to patients, guiding them through the treatment process, and hosting workshops about the importance of early cancer detection, she empowers and uplifts those who might otherwise have been dragged
down by their diagnosis. “I get messages and calls and emails from people all the time saying, ‘Because of you, I was able to get through my journey,’” she says.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women, with Black women dying from the disease at a higher rate than others. Each year in the United States, more than 260,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women (2,400 in men). Symptoms can vary and include any changes in the breast like lumps, itching, abnormal nipple discharge, or pain, and some people, like McFadden-Sabari, have no signs or symptoms at all.
With advanced treatments and early detection, breast cancer survivors can live a long, full life. But for those who are newly diagnosed, it may not feel that way—which is why McFadden-Sabari’s infectious laugh, optimism, and quick wit are such a comfort to those who are worried about next steps. Although she’s quick to joke that she “scared the hell out of cancer, so it took my breasts and left,” she is also tenderhearted and savvy about everything from risk factors to the appropriate doctors to have on your care team. At hospitals, she counsels families of breast cancer patients and even helps with gas expenses and incidentals like toothbrushes they may have forgotten to bring with them.
McFadden-Sabari supports her organization through donations and charity golf tournaments and relies on a small band of volunteers (including her husband and her kids), who work alongside her with patients. Many of her patients find her through word of mouth or her social media accounts—the organization’s Instagram account, @boldandbreastless, has more than 35,000 followers.
“Every day I wake up, I smile because God thought enough of me to wake me up,” she says. “So every day, I have to make someone else smile too.” boldandbreastless.com ❖

October is Breast Cancer Awareness

NATALIE LUCIA PURCHASED A CUSTOM CENTER CONSOLE FROM VALHALLA BOATWORKS’ V SERIES FLEET FOR FUN FISHING EXCURSIONS WITH THE GIRLS THAT END WITH A TOAST TO THE PERFECT DAY
by GEORGE LABONTEIt doesn’t take long after meeting Natalie Lucia to surmise that this is a woman who takes her leisure time seriously. She’s also somewhat of a rare gem in the mostly male-dominated sport of fishing. The last several years have been a world of discovery and an uphill climb for Lucia in her quest for the perfect boat to accommodate her very discerning taste, but she is now the owner/operator of a gorgeous Valhalla Boatworks V-33 center console.
Lucia was searching for a boat that could hold its own as a serious fishing vessel while also offering a luxurious venue for leisure cruising. On any given day, she might start out early fishing in the Gulf Stream, wind down relaxing at the Jupiter sandbar midday, and wrap up the day on a quest for the best waterfront margarita. After a turn at the wheel with a pair of 25-footers (one a center console, the other a dual-console catamaran), she had enough experience to know with

certainty what she liked and disliked in a boat. A lengthy search for something bigger and better concluded with a chance meeting with a broker who not only had a 2022 V-33 ready for delivery due to a client trading up but also had a buyer for Lucia’s trade-in. The rest was history.
You’ll find the aptly named Always in Trouble turning heads everywhere she goes, as Palm Beach Gardens resident Lucia and her crew of women enjoy fishing and cruising together. The Valhalla V-33 is one of a fleet of luxury center consoles offered by the Viking Yacht Company, a premier builder of sportfishing yachts. A collaboration between Viking’s design team and Michael Peters Yacht Design resulted in a twin-step tunnel hull that raises the bar in both style and performance.
Always in Trouble is a custom-colored Kingston Gray over Whisper Gray accents trimmed in black powder coat for a very striking look. The aesthetics found on her larger sportfish yacht counterpart are evident at every turn. Graceful curves, a classic helm pod and toe rail in a faux teak finish along with ladderback helm chairs all suggest sportfish luxury. Meticulous mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems on par with the best in the industry set her apart.
ABOUT THE WRITER
Hobe Sound resident George LaBonte is an avid fisherman who has captained local charters for 40 years. He also hosts the national television series Florida Sportsman Best Boat and Florida Sportsman Project Dreamboat. To book a charter with Captain LaBonte, visit edgesportfishing.com—and be sure to check out his new YouTube channel (“George LaBonte”) devoted to his many fishing adventures.
A SeaKeeper 2 Gyrostabilizer and Hooker Sea Chest/Pump live-well system, Lumitec RGBW spectrum LED lighting from top to bottom, twin Mercury Verado 300 V8 four strokes, and yacht-quality electrical systems are just part of what makes this model sparkle. The balance of comfortable seating on deck and fishability (both 360 degrees around her deck) along with the perfect gunwale height and visibility across the helm would ultimately close the deal for Lucia. From mahi to margaritas and everything in between, the V-33 looks like a perfect fit. ❖
Today’s TAMPA
THE FIVE-STAR JW MARRIOTT TAMPA WATER STREET REFLECTS THE CITY’S EVOLUTION
by MARY MURRAYIf you haven’t been to downtown Tampa in a while, there are a lot of new experiences, places, bites, and sights in store. The city is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, propelled in part by its championship-winning sports teams and an infusion of millennials planting roots and raising families in the area. Leading the way is the Tampa Riverwalk and Channel District. Here, next door to the Amalie Arena, you’ll find the new JW Marriott Tampa Water Street, a sleek addition to the skyline that acts as a chic second home for travelers and locals alike.
From top to bottom, this property combines sophisticated surrounds with an inviting atmosphere inclusive of restaurants, amenities, and unique accommodations. A standout offering among the hotel’s 519 rooms and suites are the Stay Well rooms, which boast elements geared toward improving well-being, such as advanced
air-purification systems and circadian lighting.
Head to the sixth floor to continue this wellness trajectory at the Spa by JW and the rooftop pool and lounge area. Spend the day in a poolside cabana, escaping to the adjacent Six restaurant for a light lunch or evening cocktails overlooking Tampa.
When hunger hits, you can also venture over to the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street’s sister Marriott property to dine on the Garrison Channel at Anchor & Brine, which specializes in what Matthew Brennan, the resort’s executive chef, describes as coastal Florida cuisine with a Latin influence. Sense of place and seasonality play a role across many of the on-site restaurant concepts, with Brennan sourcing local lettuces from Brick Street Farms in St. Petersburg and tomatoes from The Villages Grown.
But perhaps no space exudes the essence of Water Street quite like the JW Marriott’s lobby area. Here, mid-century modern decor and soaring design elements cradle communal gathering spots. Sip on a nightcap at the Driftlight Lounge bar or savor a morning pastry by Chef Natalia Meshalkina at the JW Market coffeehouse.
Anchoring it all is Driftlight, the JW Marriott’s signature restaurant. The scene is Mad Men meets twenty-firstcentury urban cool, with wraparound booths that invite intimate conversation. Start the day with a breakfast of chicken sausage hash, acai bowls, or lemon poppy seed pancakes that are bright, light, and just the right amount of sweet. Come evening, Driftlight transforms into an upscale steak house with a Florida twist.
Sous Chef Dylan Rebuck has taken the reins of the restaurant’s dry-aging program, which enhances a menu dotted with Floridian ingredients like grouper and Latin touches including
a chimichurri steak sauce.
Driftlight captures the essence of the hotel as a whole— a hip hangout for discerning travelers who enjoy the finer things in life but don’t sweat the small stuff. A nonprofit rescue in Palm City offers abandoned and neglected horses a safe haven—and a bright future
by VALERIE STAGGS | photography by JASON NUTTLEAs the gate swings open at Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation (ERAF) in Palm City, visitors might take a moment to notice a horse swimming in a fountain. Emma, a 14-year-old quarter horse, is enjoying a cool dip on a hot Florida summer day at the new home where she and her daughter, Lucy, now live. Watching this majestic equine frolicking in the fountain, it’s difficult to imagine that she and the 37 other horses that currently call ERAF home have endured a heartbreaking journey to get here.
“Horses don’t feel sorry for themselves,” says Melissa Muller, communications and development coordinator at ERAF. As she walks along paddock fences, Muller points out horses of all different sizes, colors, and breeds. Each one has its own story.
Founded in 2000, ERAF is a nonprofit devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of horses, mules, and donkeys. The organization takes in equines that have been abused, abandoned, neglected, or surrendered by their owners, as well as former racehorses retiring from the sport. Since its inception, ERAF has rescued more than 450 animals.
The farm sits on 8.5 acres of land off Southwest Martin Highway. The property comprises 24 stalls, 9 paddocks, and 2 quarantine paddocks. With a staff of just two full-time and six part-time employees, ERAF relies mostly on its 75-plus volunteers to care for the horses, maintain the property, staff events, and handle the day-to-day management of the organization. Many volunteers eventually take on larger roles, end up adopting an animal, or both.
“When I came to ERAF in 2018, I had just lost my
ERAF volunteer Karen Goodberlet walks with Hero, a 6-year-old off-track Thoroughbred.mom,” says board member Robin Doniger. “She was my best friend.” Doniger started caring for Gucci, an Appaloosa who was recovering from a traumatic leg injury at the time and eventually also lost both eyes. In January 2020, she adopted him.
“Horses are magic,” she says. “They know just what you need.”
Gucci’s former owner had been advised to euthanize the
horse. Instead, he brought him to ERAF. Watching Gucci root around in Muller’s hand looking for peppermints, it’s apparent that this horse is quite content at his new home.
Gucci’s story is not unusual. When horses first arrive at ERAF, they are often malnourished, mistreated, or suffering from any number of health problems. “It’s hard to see horses in this condition,” says Muller. “Rescue takes a special breed of person.” That special breed of person is Nancy Dunn, ERAF’s full-time barn manager. Dunn is described by those who work with her as something akin to a horse whisperer. “Nancy has an innate understanding of how horses think and react,” says Doniger.
Dunn, who grew up in a small, rural Pennsylvania town, has been around horses her entire life. “I was raised on a horse farm, but rescue is a whole different facet of the industry,” she says. At ERAF, she fields calls daily from law enforcement, animal care and control, and concerned citizens about horses in need and formulates the best plan for rescuing them if warranted. A call can involve anything from feral horses running
wild to abuse situations to seizures by the sheriff’s department. Over time, and through much trial and error, Dunn has developed a routine for capturing horses. This process involves setting up gates and fences to eventually coax the horse into a trailer for transport to ERAF. Rescuing horses requires patience, persistence, and quick reflexes. Dunn notes the time she narrowly missed being kicked in the face by a horse she was trying to rescue.
Getting the animal to ERAF is only the beginning of what can be a long road to recovery for many horses. Dunn points to a horse peeking her head out from the end stall of the stable. The sign on the door reads: “Please admire me from afar! I am still learning not to be shy.” Her name is Eve, and she is a young Florida Cracker who was severely abused and found running loose on the prairie in Okeechobee two years ago. Dunn has put in hours and hours with Eve, trying to gain her trust. “Sometimes it starts out with just sitting in a paddock with them,” she says. At this moment, a volunteer is standing in front of Eve with her hands behind her back while the horse tentatively nuzzles her arm. “She wants to be with people, but she’s not good with hands,” explains Dunn.
Dunn says Eve is her most challenging horse yet, but she is determined to get her adoption ready—the ultimate goal for all horses at ERAF. The process begins with learning the history of the horse, if possible, and completing a medical evaluation. Then the animal is treated for any health issues and brought up to date with deworming, vaccinations, and dental care. ERAF
has a longstanding relationship with Harbor Ridge Equine in Palm City. The veterinary clinic, which specializes in equine services, sends vets out to the farm to treat the horses.
The horse is also evaluated for level of training and emotional status. Dunn explains that they meet each horse where he or she is—a horse with serious health concerns, abuse issues, or little to no training is going to take some time. “Eventually, through many patient hours, getting closer to them through

feed and positive reinforcement, I can touch them and start to build a relationship,” she says. “They learn to lead and be comfortable being touched all over and groomed.” The process can take anywhere from weeks to months to, in rare cases, even a year. The horse decides the pace.
Not all rescue horses will be able to be ridden, but those with potential are slowly eased into the activity by experienced riders. Staff member Jessica Archuletta and volunteer Karen Goodberlet work carefully with those horses to ensure that prior to adoption the horse is safe and rideable, whether for competition or leisurely trail riding.
To date, ERAF has completed more than 425 successful adoptions. The organization’s success is due in large part to the numerous accreditations it maintains. “Accreditations make us unique,” says Muller. “There are a lot of boxes you have to check to get these accreditations.” ERAF is accredited by the
Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and is an Adoption Partner with the ASPCA’s The Right Horse Initiative. They are also accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. Many Thoroughbreds are relinquished to ERAF after their racing careers are over to be retrained for post-track life.
These accreditations, as well as ERAF’s membership in the United Horse Coalition and EQUUS recognition as a Guardian Partner, all help advance the foundation’s goal of ensuring a caring home for every horse. Sometimes that means providing monetary assistance, food, or supplies so that financially burdened owners can keep the horses they love.
“A lot of our horses come from owner surrender,” says Muller. “We would rather assist an owner in keeping a horse in their own home.” The current economy is causing an uptick in owner surrenders, she notes, and ERAF is working to implement a safety-net program designed to keep horses with their owners.
Board President Elaine Hines is a passionate advocate for this program as well as programs that educate the public on responsible ownership. “We need to educate individuals on caring for horses and stop the cycle [of abuse and neglect],” she says. Hines, who lives in Jupiter, first came to ERAF as a volunteer in 2010. Rediscovering the love that she’d always had for horses, she now uses her position on the board to advocate for better awareness, education, and collaboration among rescue organizations.
“I want ERAF to become known in Florida for its ability to facilitate and help individuals and other horse rescues become more effective in rehoming these unfortunate horses,” says Hines. She explains that there are a lot of small horse rescues in Florida that don’t have funding and are forced to close their doors, leaving their horses homeless.
Eventually, through many patient hours, getting closer to them through feed and positive reinforcement, I can touch them and start to build a relationship.” —N a N cy D u NNTy (left), a 15-year-old appendix quarter horse, and Macho Blue, a 7-year-old off-track Thoroughbred, graze as 7-year-old off-track Thoroughbred Son Son cools off in the pond.
More support from larger players is needed, she says, to address a growing need. “I’d like to see ERAF be able to work toward building alliances with larger organizations to educate the public and advance the mission.” Hines’ goal is to form a coalition of equine rescues throughout Florida that will work together to increase awareness, raise money, and collectively gain better supply pricing and better placement of rescues. ERAF receives no government funding, relying on individual donors, private foundations, fundraising events, and wills and bequests to support their programs.
Individuals looking to adopt a horse from ERAF can expect to undergo a thorough screening process. On this particular day at the farm, we meet a mother and daughter duo, one of whom is blind, who have recently been adopted and are awaiting transport to their new home. Conversely, there are two horses still in need of homes
who suffer from anhidrosis, a not-uncommon condition that makes horses unable to sweat. These animals would be better suited to an adoptive family in a cold-weather climate like Minnesota or Wisconsin.
MOVIE NIGHT!
On November 17, The Lyric Theatre in downtown Stuart will hold a special screening of The Mustangs: America’s Wild Horses. The film, executive produced by Robert Redford, tells the story of America’s wild horses and their need for protection. Proceeds from the screening will benefit ERAF. To purchase tickets, visit eraf.org.
“We are looking to make the right match,” says Dunn, who meets with each potential adopter to evaluate whether they will make a good horse owner. “Sometimes I know they are not ready and suggest they come out and volunteer first,” she adds.
That has proven to be a pretty good strategy. Not only did Doniger adopt Gucci after volunteering, but Muller also co-adopted a pony named Logan with a friend. “I always wanted a pony,” says Muller with a laugh.
Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation is located at 6400 SW Martin Hwy. in Palm City. If you are interested in volunteering, donating, or adopting, visit eraf.org for more information. ❖

MEAL PREP
Jupiter-based holistic nutritionist and dietetic technician
Jen Van Horn (jenvanhorn.com) offers 5 tips for meal prepping like a pro
Create a plan. Each week, grab a calendar or use a meal template to jot down recipes for the days you plan to eat at home. Pick dishes that are easy to fix, will bless you with leftovers, and share common ingredients. Under each meal, note the items you’ll need to pick up at the grocery store.
Pack your pantry. Bulk up on pantry staples you can utilize in a range of dishes. Brown rice, for example, is essential for paellas and stir-fries, while black beans can be tossed into soups, salads, and chilies.
Overcook. “Batch cooking” is the act of making a surplus of food that can be frozen and served later. Set aside some time to prepare a base recipe that can be adapted into different dishes, like a healthy side of veggies or a tasty sauce, and store as individual portions in the freezer for easy heating.
Think double-duty. For example, if you’re grilling organic chicken breasts for dinner one night, toss on an extra piece or two that you can pop in the fridge and use the next day to make tacos or chicken salad.
Be prepared. Take advantage of (healthy) prepared foods. A tasty, store-bought rotisserie chicken is the perfect reheat-and-eat option to go with sides you make at home and can be used in a variety of dishes like sandwiches and salads. ❖
