Thesis - Boat Building School & Visitor Centre | Waterford
Waterfronts - Activity of the past
The aim of this thesis was to investigate if an activity that took place on a waterfront could be re-established in order to regenerate that cities waterfront. There were two parts to my thesis. The first was “design by research” and the second part was “research by design”. For this thesis I focused my research on waterfronts that had dealt with boat construction within them. The thesis was case study based where I looked at cities such as Belfast and what was place within their waterfronts. The city I choose to focus my second part of research was Waterford. I found that this city had a history of boat building. This city uses is history but has not embraced it all. My design proposal was to use the site i choose as a way to teach people a forgotten craft while learn about the history of the city. It was my intention to use the activity to create a link between the local people and tourists that visit the city every year.
Waterfronts Today
In conclusion I feel that there is great potential in using this type of activity in regenerating the waterfront especially in Waterford city as it would add to its already long history. The media that was used in the final presentation was drawings and models. The software I used in this project were AutoCAD, Sketchup, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign

Dance School | Cork City
For this project I was asked design a dance school. The site is a disused piece of land, situated on the west side of the South Presentation Convent on Douglas Street in Cork City. I was inspired by the entourage of the cityscape which would provide a natural platform for a school of dance. After all doesn’t the city accommodate many types of functions from traffic to commercial outlets. Dance was the perfect medium by which this could be mirrored back to the public through alternative styles of dance thus demonstrating the autonomous and personal nature of the performing arts. Consequently the next step was to design a building that would facilitate dance and the student using the cityscape as its narrative. In the Second part of this project the main design concept was “The Park.” The idea was to create spaces that dancers could feel comfortable in while having school functions incorporated into it. Each dance studio has its own little park and the performance space was a park. I designed the school so that the public and the dancers could interact with each other through this park space. I designed the audience space with an industrial theme using a scaffolding type structure. This was to give its visitors of the dance school the feeling of dancing on the street or in an industrial park. The media that was used in the final presentation was drawings, models and video. The software I used in this project were AutoCAD, Sketchup, Kerkythea , Photoshop and Windows Movie Maker.

Crèche | Waterford City
For this project I designed a crèche within an old newspaper printing building. The site is located in Waterford City near the Quay. I wanted to develop a relationship between new and old, using a courtyard theme design. For the new section of the design I found inspiration from a library which uses all of its interior surfaces as storage for the student’s books and bags. I used this idea within the new section of my project to create space for storage as the site was quite small in size which minimized the floor area of use. The courtyard is the barrier between the child and the adult. As the parents drop their children off at the crèche they are not allowed past the courtyard. The new section of the site was design for the child so that they can create their own world away from the distractions of the outside world. The media that was used in the final presentation was drawings, models. The software I used in this project were AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop.

Micro Brewery | Kilkenny City
For this project I designed a micro brewery within Kilkenny City on the site of the Smithicks brewery. The design processes of this project was designate to the visitors center. The design was primarily for the visitors of the site. It is inspired by a courtyard theme, which required the visitor to walk through the buildings which punctuated at the courtyard. With this project I focused on developing a relationship between new and old. The visitor would enter through the manufacturing area and observe the brewing process whilst journeying through it. This lead to a cheese making space where the visitor will see how it is manufactured and stored for maturing. The Journey would conclude at the courtyard. The visitors at the end would experience a savoury delight of the manufacturing process by tasting its beer and cheese. This courtyard has dual functionality as it can be later used for mini-concerts and many other social events. The media that was used in the final presentation was drawings, models. The software I used in this project were AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop.

Welcome Centre| Dublin Castle
With this project I designed a welcome centre for Dublin Castle. The site is located in the lower court of the castle, enclosed on three sides. The site at present is being used as a car park. From the beginning of the project the design process has been lead by the approach to the castle. A tree line guides the visitor into the site where they are met by the welcome centre, which itself has a tree like design. The idea behind this is to continue the journey of the dignitary or public continue their journey to the castle through the building while having attractions on either side of them. Within the building there is a cafe, adjustable exhibition space and reception on the ground floor. On the first floor there is a press room, news room, and executive rooms. The facade of the building is made of glazing connected to a glulam structure with spider connections. On the outside of the facade a second facade is made up of a green living wall supported by glulam columns. This facade is to look like a tree. The visitor passes through the facade on the ground floor and continues up to the first floor and moves on through the arch way to the upper court of the castle. The media that was used in the final presentation was drawings, models and video. The software I used in this project were AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop.

Two Unit House| Youghal
For this project I designed a two unit house where a family of four could call home and also accommodate visiting family and friends. The concept of this design was the courtyard. The courtyard divided the house into part sections of public, semi-public and private spaces. From the passerby’s perspective on street level the premises resembles a simple bungalow. However on closer inspection the visitor enters the house on the second floor whit the living space being located on the first floor below. This living spaces are strategically located so that they face the courtyard On the other side of this courtyard is the bedroom spaces. Following this is the studio/visitors accommodation which provides the owner or visitor with privacy. I developed this project through models and hand drawings. I used these skills for the final presentation.

Publications
Book | Year Two
For this project I worked as part of a team with my colleagues to design and develop a publication which displayed the finest work of each year within the architecture and architectural technology courses. I was involved in developing two chapters of the book where I photographed models, post edited them and finally displaying them on the pages. I was also one of the final editors of the book before the final product was published. In this project I developed my photography skills where I learned about light and shadow. I also developed my computer skills in Photoshop and Indesign, during the process of editing which helped present the finished product.

Building Envelope | Intensive Workshop
For this project I worked with my colleagues in designing a facade for a power station located in Little Island, Wexford. As a group we took on the building skin as a fully-fledged architectural element. The purpose of project was to create an interactive facade which allowed visitors to view the interior of the power station. The turbine of the power uses water to keep the machine cool and as it passes through this, it becomes contaminated. We design the facade as the cleaning element for this water allowing it to circulate back into the machine. This type of faรงade is itself is experimental. The product that was used to clean the water was an algae fungus through which the contaminated water would pass through. The algae thrive on contaminated water and grow within the faรงade. The algae itself can be harvest, dried and turned into a bio-product which can be used as fuel for the turbine. The facade is made up of pipes which pump the contaminated water through them allowing the algae to grow which then would be separate into tanks located within the floors on which the visitors would walk on. As the algae grow the facade becomes less transparent. Twice a day the algae are removed so that visitors can see the processes again. As the algae are removed the view across the river becomes clearer. The faรงade is designed in such a way that the visitor feels like they are inside a machine and are able to see all it components.
