Mill Creek Optical The CCS Elementary brought Christmas cheer to the school, during the annual Christmas play. Grades Pre-K-2 participated in the choir, while the 3rd grade was featured as actors in the production. The play "A Place in the Christmas Choir," is the heartfelt tale of Happy the Hound, who, despite her lack of singing talent, wishes desperately to be included in Santa's Christmas Choir. The play is a wonderful story about friendship, acceptance, and the meaning of Christmas.

I HATE GIVING PEOPLE BAD NEWS One of the more unpleasant things I must do as a lawyer is give a client bad news. This is particularly true when the client or a loved one has been badly injured in a car accident, and then we find out that the driver of the car that caused the crash either had no insurance or the minimum required by law in New York. Telling the parent of a child that has severe and permanent injuries that the responsible driver only had $25,000 worth of insurance is not a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. The good news is that such a scenario would have been avoided if the client had purchased adequate Supplementary Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Coverage (SUM coverage) on his own auto policy. SUM provides coverage from YOUR insurance policy to protect YOU and your passengers in the event that the other driver is driving illegally (without any insurance) or driving with policy limits that are not high enough to cover your damages (underinsured drivers). So how does this work? Let’s say that you have done the smart thing and increased your liability coverage from $100,000 to $300,000, and then also purchased SUM coverage in the amount of $300,000. Now, if you get in that accident caused by the drunk driver with $25,000 worth of insurance, you can get an additional $275,000 from your own insurance company. Not bad for what is probably less than a couple of hundred dollars per year in increased insurance costs. Now, don’t take the attitude that it will never happen to you or your family, because it could, and does happen to families DAILY throughout New York (even right here in Livingston County). And besides, I don’t wish to ruin another afternoon explaining to you why your loved one will only get $25,000 for the terrible wreck they were in. I know talking about and thinking about insurance is as fun as watching paint dry. If you like, you can send me the declarations page from your auto policy and I will review it for you (for free), and I will let you know if I think you need to increase your coverage.

Car Tips for Holiday Travel AAA says this will be the busiest Christmas travel holiday on record. They expect a record 93% of those traveling to go by car. A local car maintenance shop shares some tips to keep you safe. “We got a lot of people coming in, traveling, going out of town. They are making sure their fluids are checked out, making sure their tires are good, making sure their coolant levels are good,” said Kenny Thigpen, Manager at Express Oil Change. It’s best to take care of maintenance through the year rather than waiting until things break, he says. “It’s a lot cheaper on you.”

Fluids are key to a smooth trip, especially in colder weather. With the coolant, you want a mix of antifreeze. Thigpen says, a good concentrate on washer fluid is a must, so it doesn’t freeze on your windshield. All five tires need to be inflated. “Our spare tires are being neglected, you want to make sure that you double-check those, especially if you’re going out on the highway,” he said. “Cause a lot of times, they are neglected They are up under the car and they’re not checked at all.” You can also save money with proper care. “The proper inflation of your tires, a clean air filter and a clean air intake system on your car, better air flowing through your motor, you can definitely save some gas,” Thigpen said. Other winter car tips: • • • • • •
Make sure windshield wipers are not brittle or torn. Carry an ice scraper. Never try to remove frost with your wipers. Make sure you have enough tire tread. Do the quarter test: if see the top of Washington’s head, consider replacing your tires. Check headlights and clean them regularly. Frozen keyhold? Place your palm directly on the key hold for at least 60 seconds to melt ice within the lock.
