Waldorf Astoria™ Hotels & Resorts
WELCOME TO ROME, ITALY Rome is a historic city full of art, churches, monuments, and palazzi.
The Eternal City is one of Europe’s most ancient urban centers, dating back almost 3,000 years. Rome’s early inhabitants left behind a trove of architectural masterpieces, including the massive Colosseum. The Italian capital also boasts an unparalleled concentration of world-class art, from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel to the baroque Trevi Fountain, and teems with restaurants, trattorie, osterie, pizzerie, enoteche, cafés, bars, and gelaterie. It is home to the animated, good-humored Romans, who live to eat, drink wine (and espresso), and hold forth on everything from politics to soccer, fashion, food, and films. Rome also encompasses the Catholic Church’s independent city-state, the Vatican, which is home to the imposing St. Peter’s Basilica—and the Pope.[1]

Located in the archaeological heart of the city of Rome, the Flavian Amphitheatre, or, more commonly, the Colosseum, stands for monumentality and receives a large number of daily visitors attracted by the enchantment of its history and its complex architecture.[2]
[2] [3]
The striking square and its imposing colonnade lead to the greatest basilica of the Christian world: St Peter’s Basilica (Basilica San Pietro). It also represents the core of the Vatican City, the smallest state in the world. In the origins, the square used to be the place where Nerone Circus and Gardens were located. In the center of the square stands an Egyptian obelisk (without hieroglyphics and built during the Ramsete II dynasty) brought to Rome by Emperor Caligola in 37 B.C.[3]

The Roman Forum (Forum Romanum) began as a market place, but became the economic, political, and religious hub, town square, and center of all Rome. Ridges connecting the Capitoline Hill with the Quirinal, and the Palatine with the Esquiline, enclosed the Forum Romanum. It is believed that before Romans built their city, the forum vicinity was a burial area (8-7th C. B.C.). Tradition and archaeological evidence support dating the building of certain structures (the Regia, Temple of Vesta, Shrine to Janus, Senate House, and prison) to before the Tarquin Kings.[1]

ROMAN CULTURE The early Romans adopted culture from their neighbors, the Greeks and Etruscans, in particular, but imprinted their unique stamp on their borrowings. The Roman Empire then spread this culture far and wide, affecting diverse areas of the modern world. For instance, they still have colosseums and satire, for entertainment, aqueducts to supply water, and sewers to drain it. Roman-built bridges still span rivers, while distant cities are located along remnants of actual Roman [1]
roads. Going further and higher, the names of Roman gods pepper the constellations. Some parts of Roman culture are gone, but remain intriguing. Chief among these are the gladiators and death-games in the arena.[1]

ROME CAVALIERI ART COLLECTION Far more than just a hotel, the Rome Cavalieri is home to one of the greatest private art collections in the world. This prestigious luxury hotel houses well over a thousand artistic treasures in its public spaces and suites. They range from the 16th Century to the modern day, from Old Masters to contemporary art, from French antiques to rare tapestries, sculpture and ceramics. There is a crib commissioned by Napoleon for his baby son, a coiffeuse table designed for Marie Antoinette, and a commode made for the King of Poland. There are Warhols, Indianas, Bacchanalian frescoes, bronze, and marble sculptures. In the lobby are famous Beauvais tapestries — the only other examples on public display are at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles — and their prize possession, the Tiepolo cycle, purchased at auction in 2006 for a record sum. A private tour of the Rome Cavalieri Art Collection can be arranged with their art historian.[1]
THE AUDIENCE OF THE EMPEROR Beauvais Tapestry, 1725 This extremely rare giant tapestry is one of a series of 10 entitled The History of the King of China. There is one at the Metropolitan in New York, a few at the Getty Museum and the rest in private collections in Europe. Four dignitaries pay hommage to the Emperor while a European princess arrives on a chariot. Note the Forbidden City in the left background. [1]

Three of the Rome Cavalieri’s pools are outdoors, with stunning Rome views as a backdrop. The main outdoor pool is integrated in the hotel’s terraces and is served by the casual Pool Bar. Two further pools lie deeper into the hotel’s Mediterrean park. One is designed for children; the other basks in the sunshine until late afternoon, nestled between palm and olive trees. The fourth pool is indoors beneath a beautiful glass dome: a fountain splashes into the hydro-massage pool, a Japanese stone walkway massages the soles of tired feet, and a log fire burns in the fireplace.
