What Separates Vortech From The Others:
Being Number One How do we build our superchargers? Just ask Richard Holdner, racer, engine builder and magazine columnist. He was the recipient of the serial number 001, V-1 A-Trim supercharger. It was installed on his 1988 Ford Mustang LX, then campaigned in several Silver State open road races in which he reached a top speed of 193 mph. While drag racing, the LX easily ran in the 13s with an occasional 12 on street tires and 3.08 gears at 118 mph. The blower was subjected to literally hundreds of dyno pulls, in boost pressures ranging from 6 psi all the way up to 14 psi. It was used to dyno test long and short-runner intake manifolds, camshafts and even throttle bodies. In fact, the blower was used to test just about every conceivable engine part or combination, from mass air meters all the way back to mufflers. Did it ever overheat, lose a bearing or even whimper one complaint? Not on your life! It simply went about its business producing boost and horsepower. “Believe me, old number one has been tested to death, even to the point of abuse. However, like the proverbial pink bunny, it just kept going and going,” said Holdner.
“Vortech is home of the quickest street legal Mustang tuner car we’ve ever tested.”

Waterbound Missiles Courtesy of Riva
While competing in the 4th Annual Car and Driver Supercar Challenge, Chuck Mallett of Mallett Cars, Ltd. piloted his Cadillac CTS-V to a first place finish in the Sedan Class competition at Michigan International Speedway using a Vortech Supercharger. His Caddy sported a 7.1 liter V8 with Corvette LS6 heads plus other internals from GM Motorsports. Power was in the 750 horsepower range, thanks to the efficiency of the Vortech JT-Trim compressor. With GM engineer Jim Minneker at the wheel, the CTS-V also added an impressive first-in-class in the coveted 100-150 MPH sprint at 9.9 seconds... a full two seconds faster than any of the competition. As Car and Driver put it so well, “punch the throttle, and you’re pasted into the driver’s seat like cake batter, the car leaps forward like some primordial beast.” Thumbs up to everyone at Mallett Cars for a mission well accomplished.
Credited with developing the industry’s first bolt-on supercharger system for personal watercraft, Riva Racing of Pompano Beach, Florida is heavily regarded as one of the world’s foremost watercraft supercharging experts. The Choice of Cigarette For more than three decades, the Cigarette Racing Team has set the standard for speed and luxury in the powerboat marketplace. Vortech Marine is the exclusive centrifugal supercharger supplier on their limited edition world class powerboats.
Rtech Is Better Than Yours Redefining the world of nautical supercharging, Rtech Performance builds supercharging systems for high performance marine applications by coupling Vortech compressors with their own innovative intake, intercooler, and blower drive assemblies. According to system designer Tom Robinson, “The high efficiency of Vortech blowers, along with the availability of many different compressor trims and maps, makes my job considerably easier”. Rtech’s twin-blower ‘Big Gun’ system (left) is an outrageous but logical response to the special requirements of marine racing engines, wherein unlike drag racing, they require large displacement and moderate boost pressure to enjoy unparalleled endurance. Using twin counter-rotating Vortech V-2 T-Trim compressors on 600-cubes of big-block Chevrolet, the Big Gun delivers 1600 hp at 20 psi; with far more available when built in a V-7 Ysi-Trim system configuration.
The Stuff Maritime Legends Are Made Of Recognized worldwide for creating some of the baddest engines ever to hit the open seas, Keith Eickert’s Kustom Engines are often considered the epitome of hull-bound, high-tech horsepower. With combinations achieving nearly 2,000ponies in full-blown Poker Run-style race trim, Kustom Engines is not only capable of providing the most demanding customers with all the power they’ll ever need, but also is able to package it in fashion worthy of an art gallery. In the case of this masterpiece shown at right, Kustom Engines utilized a Vortech V-24 XX-trim supercharger along with their own custom intake, upper plenum and progressive linkage throttle body to generate over 1,300-horsepower at 6,100 rpm from just 598-cubes. Still the best part is, they did it with everyday 93-octane pump swill.
102 MPH On A Rope The ski-race version of Nordic’s 21’ Blaze is designed to go fast and provide stellar handling. But what happens when you add a Vortech supercharger to the Mercury Racing HP500 EFI? How about the fastest speed for a 21’ boat at Powerboat Magazine’s 100 mph competition! The Blaze was clocked at 102+ mph in full ski-race mode. This boat also set the Formula Class record at the 62-mile 2004 Catalina Island Ski Race, the old record had been standing since 1987! In fact, the Nordic has competed in over 25 marathon races at speeds averaging 90 mph (most over an hour in length) without an engine or supercharger failure to date.
Macc-ing The Competition When Macc Racing’s Chris MacClugage crossed the finish line first three consecutive times riding Pro Runabout at Lake Havasu, he not only won the world title for that class for the second time in a row, but a second Vortech-blown world title for Kawasaki as well! With an estimated 400-horses on tap and sub-3-second 0-60 mph timeslips, the Macc Racing Kawasaki STX-15F is one of the most wicked PWC’s ever to hit the water. A true testament to hard work, hard riding, and of course, the Power of Vortech!

VORTECH ENGINEERING AT THE FOREFRONT THE VORTECH QUALITY STATEMENT
Vortech Engineering, LLC is committed to quality. We are dedicated to continuous improvement throughout the entire organization. We strive to analyze and remedy problems in manufacturing, service and product performance by monitoring key processes and making appropriate changes as necessary. We achieve these quality objectives by implementing a documented quality assurance program that is consistent with the disciplines of ISO 9001:2000
Vortech’s 60,000 square-foot headquarters in Channel Islands, California houses administration, engineering, testing, quality control, manufacturing, sales and marketing. The four major business units are Engineered Material Services, Automotive, Marine and Industrial divisions.
The supercharger has proven to be one of the most effective means for obtaining increased power from an internal combustion engine without having to make major engine modifications. This is accomplished by compressing combustion air before it enters the cylinders, which increases density. This results in improved cylinder filling, allowing more air and fuel to be burned in the combustion cycle, with dramatic increases in torque and horsepower. Vortech superchargers
operate on fundamental and proven turbomachinery principles, first described by Euler’s turbomachinery equation developed in the 18th Century. This principle states that the work imparted to a fluid by an impeller is related to the change in angular momentum of the fluid. From these humble beginnings, the centrifugal compressor has evolved and found its way to becoming the most efficient and reliable means for delivering charge air at high pressures. Vortech has seized upon these known performance advantages and has developed its line of centrifugal superchargers to a performance level that clearly establishes Vortech as the performance and technology leader in aftermarket supercharging.
The engineering staff at Vortech has a combined experience of more than 60 years in turbomachinery product development. Design and manufacturing software include Virtual Gibbs, CadCam, Vellum Solids, Solid Works 2007 and a suite of sophisticated a e ro d ynamic turb omachine r y -sp ecif ic tools for accomplishing advanced modeling and analysis.
Vortech’s 22,000 square-foot warehouse area supports the continuous shipping and handling of all components.
Vortech is much more than just fun on the open roads & high seas. FMC Technologies, Inc. Airport Systems needed a quick and cost prudent aircraft deicing procedure. Vortron Industrial, a division of Vortech Engineering, developed a highly efficient compressor allowing FMC to offer their AirFirst® System on their articulated boom deicing vehicles. This unit effectively blows snow and frost off aircraft surfaces while drastically reducing use of expensive and hazardous glycol.
29
OF THE FUTURE ADVANCED COMPRESSOR STAGE Here’s where the rubber meets the road. Vortech’s compressor stages are highly evolved, thoroughly tested designs, resulting from more than 17 years of experience and thousands of production supercharger units. A simple visual examination clearly shows the difference. All Vortech compressors incorporate sophisticated impeller designs, coupled to a vaneless diffuser, with a progressive scroll, or volute exit stage. Impellers employ advanced aerodynamic features such as optimized inducer blading, splitters, and in some cases, exit rake and backsweep; all depending on the particular pressure/flow objectives. Rather than a simple change of blower speed to effect different “models”, each Vortech supercharger is optimized aerodynamically so that the best performance is attained for a specif ic vehicle application. In order to effectively take advantage of impeller work, flow must be efficiently dif fused so that pressure rise can b e g e n e r ate d w i th minim al l oss es . Unfortunately, a simple “cut-and-paste” won’t work. Instead, the diffuser is optimally matched to the impeller flow physics, with many iterations tested and verified until maximum efficiency is achieved with each supercharger design. Finally, a matched volute effectively collects and diffuses further, resulting in additional pressure rise. The result? Isentropic efficiencies as high as 80%! In fact, all Vortech compressors achieve at least 72% peak efficiency, with better than 65% efficiency achieved over a majority of the design flow range (surge to choke).
Vortech superchargers are engineered, designed, manufactured, assembled, tested, and packaged in the United States of America!
COMPONENTRY
Vortech componentry has garnered a reputation for its “best in class” execution. Blower casing components are cast from A356 aircraft-spec aluminum alloy treated to T-6 condition. Modern CNC production cells ensure that part tolerances are held into the “tenths”– to, and in many cases beyond, aircraft tolerances.
IMPELLER
The heart of any centrifugal supercharger is the impeller. Our piece is investment cast from an extremely strong but light-weight proprietary aluminum alloy (similar to that used in turbochargers). This special heat treated material is used because of its stability and enhanced properties at the high operating temperatures, which may reach 400°F under extreme conditions. At this temperature, the Vortech impeller is up to 36% stronger than even 7075, a common structural aluminum material used by others. The investment cast process secures close dimensional tolerance and excellent surface finish. Of course, 100% CNC machining ensures exact tolerances. And finally, multi-plane dynamic balancing to better than ISO G0.4 tolerances delivers smooth operation. The historical use of these same procedures in building aircraft turbomachinery components for the most demanding applications, proves its durability.
DRIVE GEARS
Drive gears are manufactured from 8620 and 9310 carburized billet alloy steels. These premium grade materials possess exceptional strength and durability, with enhanced core toughness properties. The gear teeth are CNC precision ground. The internal step-up drive systems are engineered to reliably support impeller speeds exceeding 70,000 rpm.
BEARINGS
Vortech bearings are ultra-high precision (ABEC 7/ABEC 9) pieces; most of which are custom manufactured to our exacting specifications. Aircraft quality is truly an understatement here, since these bearings experience speeds as much as twice that of a jet engine.
LUBRICATION SYSTEM
Vortech’s standard maintenance-free lubrication system uses engine oil that is pre-filtered and injected directly into the supercharger case. Use of engine oil provides faster warmup, excellent reliability and superior cooling. The lubricating oil benefits from continuous filtration, being routinely changed along with the host engine oil (instead of an additional maintenance action).

TESTING & DEVELOPMENT WHAT MAKES A GOOD SUPERCHARGER?
An excellent question, to which there are many important considerations. Design points such as flow and pressure must be established. Acceptable range, impeller speeds, package size and weight; these are all fundamental parameters that affect the design outcome. Then, there’s the challenge of meeting the proper performance mix at the best attainable efficiency, as there are intrinsic limitations regarding the efficient operational range of a compressor. The latter, in fact, is where the turbomachinery designer spends the bulk of his developmental effort. Some poorly designed units never work within acceptable efficiency limits. In order to quantify compressor performance and efficiency, comprehensive test work must be part of the development process, and is mandatory if a good design is to be executed. Testing must also be highly disciplined, which brings up the subject of test standards.
WHY A TEST STANDARD? Vortech’s testing protocol is amongst the most stringent and thorough in the industry with specialized equipment for system and compressor output testing.
The most fundamental reason behind adopting and adhering closely to a test standard is so supercharger products can be evaluated against a common set of criteria so that the results may be compared directly. Further, if an adopted standard is used at one test facility, then the same results will be obtained at a different facility, when using the same standard while testing the same product. This means that replicated tests produce results that are repeatable, when adhering to the standard. Lastly, the consumer benefits when he has available performance data on competing products, obtained through tests conducted in accordance with a standard. This way, he knows for certain that he can, without bias, compare product performance across all manufacturers that use the same standard and publish the data. We are the only aftermarket manufacturer to develop and use a supercharger test cell (top left) that allows us to legitimately quantify the performance and efficiency of a compressor. This gas compressor test cell features a 250 HP DC electromotive drive with integral transmission to provide speeds up to 21,000 rpm. Combined with a compressor internal drive step-up, impeller speeds up to 88,000 rpm are attainable. Data acquisition and computerized data reduction routines assure that all compressor performance maps are developed and corrected in accordance with SAE Standard J-1723. Issued in August 1995, J-1723 has been submitted for recognition as an American National Standard, per the American National Standards Institute.
(Above & Below) Vortech’s engine testing facility houses a DTS-4000G 2000 HP engine dynamometer, Mustang Eddy Current chassis dyno and Dynojet 224xLC 4WD chassis dynamometer.
A compressor map (below) is the product of a completed J-1723 test. With a map, performance trade-offs can be studied in fine detail during the development process. Multivariate data are displayed and include the pressure versus flow curves, each obtained at a fixed operating speed, and the all-important iso-efficiency contours, which are often referred to as efficiency “islands”. The term “map” is quite appropriate as, usually, the useful operating range of the compressor is displayed in its entirety, and full knowledge of compressor performance can be obtained at any specific operating point. With a compressor map, one can also over-plot an engine air demand curve and determine whether the compressor is suitably matched to the engine. This, by the way, is how Vortech is able to determine and specify the best possible supercharger for any given application.
211
HOW IS A MAP INTERPRETED?
Operating beyond the left side of the compressor map (surge line) results in instabilities and excess heat. The region at the far right side of the compressor map (choke) requires excessive drive horsepower. Both situations result in poor reliability and lackluster performance. The precise optimization and matching of specific superchargers means our units operate within the highest efficiency range on a compressor map for the specific application. Compressor maps are available upon request.
EFFICIENCY & SAFE BOOST
Efficiency is the most elusive goal of the supercharger designer and is perhaps the most important performance parameter of all. Low compressor efficiency means two things: increased discharge temperatures at increased drive horsepower. Higher temperatures result in a charge density penalty, with loss of power. Increased drive power is a parasitic loss that comes right off the bottom line. Note that claims regarding “cool boost,” involving everlarger heat exchanger systems may address the temperature aspect. But, there will always be pressure losses associated with the cooler (meaning another density and power loss) and perhaps more importantly, coolers can never address the drive power parasitic loss. Only efficiency can address these two important performance concerns simultaneously. As a performance standard, Vortech does not offer a compressor that fails to achieve at least 70% isentropic efficiency. As it is an indisputable fact that the most efficient supercharger will afford the consumer the greatest net-power gain on his engine, the savvy customer would be well-advised to request efficiency test data or better, a certified J-1723 compressor map before making a purchase choice. Only Vortech invests this level of development in its products, while also maintaining a margin of safety that anticipates variances in both vehicle and operating conditions a customer may encounter. Our engineers carefully match the compressor, boost level, ignition curve and fuel delivery characteristics of the system to each vehicle application. This OE-type approach to system development is centered on our philosophy of Safe Boost design, that is much like the process major automakers perform prior to the release of a new model or powerplant. Beware of other manufacturers’ unrealistic high power/boost claims achieved through modifications that are inappropriate for your engine. With Vortech superchargers producing more horsepower at a lower boost (compressor efficiency), you’ll find our performance generally exceeds competitor’s “on-the-edge” systems, even with this conservative approach.
ACCU-MATCH COMPRESSOR MATCHING SERVICE Each supercharger is designed, tested, and optimized to provide a specific range of boost and flow, at the best attainable efficiency. Our ACCU-MATCH Compressor Matching Service is for those tuners with highly specialized applications, such as racing. We precisely match the supercharger to the specific flow demands and power requirements of the engine. To take advantage of this service, contact a Vortech technical support representative. Vortech is one of the world’s only supercharger companies to offer a compressor matching service in-house.
Our quality assurance and final inspection department utilizes manual and computer controlled methods such as with the robotic Zeiss Eclipse 2840 Coordinate Measuring machine.
Most components from compressor bypass/blowoff valves to supercharger cases are built by hand in our precision assembly area.
Two Heins systems are used for dynamic impeller balancing to ensure the correct specifications at actual operating speeds.
Vortech’s manufacturing facility includes state-of-the-art equipment; three Makino A77 Horizontal Machining Centers (of which two are integrated with the 20 pallet FMS system), one Hitachi Seiki CS25 vertical CNC turning cell with live tooling, c-axis & loading robot and several other auto-loading machines.

Pressure/flow performance data gathered in accordance with SAE Standard J-1723. Superchargers fitted with curved outlets are 1 to 2% less efficient than shown. Horsepower estimates are based on airflow availability.
Designed for use on 1.6 to 4 liter engines, the V-5 features a low-surge threshold for smaller displacement, high-revving engines. As with all other Vortech superchargers, development and testing took place in a state-of-the-art test cell (compliant to SAE Standard J-1723). This efficient compressor design requires less horsepower to drive the impeller and provides cooler discharge temperatures. These features, matched with our exclusive D-port volute, allow for more available boost throughout the operating range, especially at higher engine speeds. The V-9 Series is ideal for applications where space around the engine is a consideration, as with GM F-Body and Sport Compact vehicles. Designed for engines ranging in size from 1.2L to 6.0L, the V-9 features our Air Assist/Power Drain lubrication system, exclusive D-port volute for improved efficiency and a V-band volute clamp for easy under-hood packaging.

TEXT TECHNICAL DRAWINGS & GLOSSARY
Glossary: Trim: Denotes the type of impeller with which the supercharger model is fitted. Because one gearbox and scroll can accept different types of impellers, and because the impeller is crucial in how much and what sort of power is made (high or low rpm, broad or narrow airflow range, and so on), a supercharger’s air output is easily adjusted (trimmed) depending on the impeller fitted. SQ (Super Quiet): This refers to the “helical” cut gear set inside the supercharger (vs. straight cut gears) that results in noise reduction. Type H/D: The heavy duty (H/D) configuration includes high speed, ceramic hybrid ball bearings, ideal for race applications, i.e. cog pulley/Gilmer drive. Type CCW: Counterclockwise supercharger rotation. Type A/A: Air assist configuration aids the supercharger oil drain system by using pressurized air. This is helpful in less than ideal custom supercharger mount.

Note: Drawings are not to scale. Pressure/Flow Performance Data Notes: Pressure and flow performance data was acquired in the Vortech Engineering supercharger test cell to the SAE J-1723 Standard. The isentropic efficiency listed is for straight discharge units, allow 1-2% lower efficiency for curved discharge. Flow and boost ratings are based upon efficiency. Maximum flow, horsepower and boost values shown are based on a minimum compressor efficiency of 60%. These ‘maximum’ values may be exceeded; however, the operating points may drop below 60% efficiency. Vortech considers this to be below the useful range of the compressor. Horsepower data is from engine dyno tests, chassis dyno tests, or is extrapolated from compressor map data. With our rating system, horsepower figures are a relative guide and not an absolute. Superchargers exceeding 6 PSIG require a Vortech standard bypass valve or a Vortech Maxflow Racing bypass valve. Superchargers exceeding 10 PSIG require a Vortech Maxflow Mondo or Maxflow Racing bypass valve. Cog belt drive systems are recommended for all heavy-duty superchargers.

SUPERCHARGING SYSTEM OVERVIEW
FEATURES & COMPARISONS
DURABILITY/DRIVEABILITY The centrifugal supercharger system characteristics of progressive and linear power addition allow for peak power targets to be met without overwhelming drivetrain components such as transmission and axle assemblies. This performance curve, directly proportional to engine rpm, allows centrifugal systems to exceed the peak power potential of other boosting options with excellent driveability, performance and less impact on fuel economy. Coupled with our conservative approach to tuning, we have seen many customers exceed 100,000 miles of trouble free motoring.
Each Vortech supercharging system is designed, tested, and sold to be installed on vehicles in their original or otherwise stock form. We have a somewhat conservative approach to tuning, (this being the setting of boost levels, ignition timing, and fuel delivery), referred to as “Safe Boost.” We provide the best performance while maintaining a margin of safety that anticipates most driving conditions that the customer may encounter. We certainly could tune more aggressively to add a few extra horsepower, however, we feel that customer satisfaction would suffer in the long run. Additionally, with Vortech’s compressor efficiency and charge cooler systems, comparable kit performance exceeds competitors’ on-the-edge systems.
STANDARD SYSTEMS
Vortech Standard and High-Ouput (Charge Cooled) Systems are 100% complete, allowing an effortless installation! The following components are among those included:
A charge cooler configuration is included with these highly popular systems. It allows for additional horsepower gains and features a sealed, maintenance-free design. These systems are 50-state emissions legal or in process of this certification.

HIGH-OUTPUT SYSTEMS (CHARGE COOLED)
THIRD PARTY SYSTEMS Vortech does not make a system for every vehicle on the road. We have selected companies such as Shelby Autos and VF-Engineering to produce systems using a Vortech supercharger for various applications. Warranty is provided by these companies. Visit our website or call Vortech for more information.
BASE KITS Designed for those who already have a Vortech Supercharger, but need the miscellaneous components (brackets, connectors, ducts, hoses, fasteners, etc.) to complete an installation. Fuel management components/electronics are available separately.
TUNER KITS These configurations are designed for those qualified tuners or race shops who do not require the fuel managements items included in our standard systems. Among the items excluded are fuel pump, fuel injectors, FMU, air-inlet assembly (T-Trim models) and ECM programmer or timing controller.
50-STATE EMISSIONS LEGAL Most Vortech systems are emissions legal in all 50 states or have the California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B.) approval pending on process completion. The Executive Order Number awarded to Vortech systems is D-213-25.
UNCOMPLICATED INSTALLATIONS Systems are designed for easy installation by most car/truck/SUV enthusiasts or automotive technicians. We include every component necessary to modify the appropriate factory components from fuel and ignition management to air intake. Additionally, Vortech maintains a tech line with trained personnel ready to assist and advise those who want to push the limits or need help for competition efforts.
MAINTENANCE Vortech supercharging systems feature a heavy duty engine oil lubrication system ensuring a fresh supply of oil to the supercharger bearings and gears. This ensures maximum durability with virtually no maintenance. In fact, when you change your engine oil, you change the supercharger oil. Owning a Vortech supercharging system is as easy as following your factory maintenance schedules and running premium unleaded fuel.
MODIFIED VEHICLES Vortech supercharging systems are developed using a stock vehicle. Only minor modifications such as a cat-back exhaust system will be compatible with our product. Custom programming (not included) will be required on modified vehicles with aftermarket exhaust headers, computer chip, throttle body, or mass air flow sensor. Also, regarding aftermarket tires and wheels, changing the overall diameter of the drive wheels more than one inch may require custom programming.
HIGH-ALTITUDE OPERATION As a result of the change in atmospheric pressure with an increase in altitude, a drop in boost pressure is common when operating in such cities as Denver, Colorado. A good rule of thumb is that you’ll experience a 1 1/2 to 2 PSIG drop in pressure at an elevation of 5000 feet above sea level.

CHEVROLET SMALL BLOCK
GM-SPEC V8 CARBURETED
This GM-Spec blow-through system produces horsepower gains that range from 30% to more than 75%, depending on boost level and volumetric efficiency. It now offers simple integration with factory V-belt or serpentine accessory drive configurations (see notes and tuning tips). The supplied pulley ratio will produce approximately 8-10 PSI at 5500 rpm on mildly modified 350 c.i. engines. The Vortech V-2 SQ (Super Quiet) S-Trim, V-1 T-Trim, or V-7 YSi-Trim compressor with 3.33” pulley are offered in the satin or polished finish systems.
Custom finished components shown.
Notes and Tuning Tips: This system can be used on engines with or without power steering. OEM Saginaw-type power steering pumps can be attached to the Vortech mounting bracket with the supplied hardware kit. For engines equipped with power steering and V-belt accessory drives, a Saginaw pump as well as an optional Vortech power steering pulley assembly (4GP110-051) will be required. That part number includes all required hardware, tensioner assembly and anodized billet aluminum pulley. Depending on the vehicle, power steering lines may require fabrication. These blow-through systems are designed to fit on engines using a “long” water pump and OEM V-belt drives, or GM Performance Parts serpentine accessory drive system P/ Ns 12497697, 12497698 and 12497869. (These GMPP part numbers are common with 19901995 OEM TPI/TBI applications). When using the GMPP serpentine system, a shorter 6-Rib drive belt is required, Vortech P/N 2A046-101. For correct belt alignment, the proper accessory drive crank pulley and accessory bracketry must be used, not supplied in these systems. Earlier models equipped with “short” water pumps will require a “long” water pump to be installed.
These systems include a cast aluminum carburetor enclosure assembly for use with Holley #4150-type, Quick Fuel Q-QFT-750-BAN or Demon 750 MD carburetor. The enclosure pressurizes the float bowls and throttle shafts for a seamless response and correct air/fuel ratio. This results in a consistent fuel curve for more power than an ordinary “bonnet”. Our enclosure also features front and rear -8 AN fuel inlet ports as well as multiple locations for pressure/vacuum connections. Linkage arms, splined shaft, and left/right hand spherical rod ends are included for simple throttle connection and adjustment. Carburetor studs are also supplied and available separately. (Fuel line fitting kit is required and sold separately). Additional components include a cast aluminum mounting bracket with hardware, 10-Rib, 6061-T6 billet aluminum 6” diameter supercharger crank pulley in hard anodize finish, integrated manual belt tensioner assembly with dual bearing tensioner pulley plus 10-Rib belt, molded 3-ply fiberglass reinforced silicone discharge hose with clamps and an air inlet assembly with elbow, clamps, silicone sleeve with reusable air filter. Please note: Polished finish systems include the discharge tube shown on the engine below and a 3-ply fiberglass reinforced silicone discharge hose (not pictured) for universal installation. “Putting a Vortech S-trim on a GM HT383 crate engine and picking up 200hp and 120 lb-ft on pump gas was an eye-opener, making me change plans and build a new small block drag engine as a blow-through instead of a nitrous combo.” - David Freiburger, Editor-In-Chief, Hot Rod Magazine APPLICATIONS INCLUDE: » 1967-1973 Camaro/Firebird (1967-1969 w/cowl hood) » 1964-1972 Chevelle » 1955-1957 Sedan (Bel Air, 210, etc.) » 1968-1972 Nova/Chevy II With approximately 22” from crank center line to the top of the enclosure, this system fits under the factory hood.
The supplied silicone supercharger discharge hose was engineered to fit a range of manifold heights. Minor trimming may be required for optimum fit. A properly jetted #4150-type carburetor must include mechanical secondaries, .120 needle and seat, plus a nitrophyll float set. For 1967-1969 Camaro/Firebird applications, in addition to the cowl hood, minor under hood trimming may be necessary and we recommend using an Edelbrock Victor Jr. manifold. For best results we suggest a compression ratio range of 8:1 to 9.5:1 with 9:1 being ideal. A mild “street” camshaft is best since a centrifugal supercharger by nature doesn’t require a lot of overlap for maximum efficiency. On early engines, a high-performance, boost referenced mechanical fuel pump will provide the necessary fuel in most applications. Late model motors may require an electrical fuel pump and a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator producing 6 lbs. of pressure static and one additional pound of fuel pressure per pound of boost. Example: 6 lbs. static fuel pressure + 5 lbs. boost pressure = 11 PSI fuel.

CHEVROLET BIG BLOCK
GM-SPEC V8 CARBURETED The Vortech blow-through carbureted supercharger system will provide an increase in horsepower ranging from 30% to more than 75% depending on boost level and volumetric efficiency.
APPLICATIONS GUIDE TEXT
Notes and Tuning Tips: Minor bottom side hood suppor t modifications may be required depending upon the type of intake manifold installed (low-rise is recommended). If this system is installed on an engine equipped with a “short” water pump, a custom accessory drive crank pulley and spacer will be required (not available from Vortech). For engines with power steering, a remote reservoir (GM “type 2”) style pump will be required as well as an optional Vortech power steering pump bracket and pulley assembly. Depending on the vehicle, power steering lines may require fabrication. Power steering pump: OE on 1987 GM Pontiac Sunbird, NAPA #20-874 Vortech power steering bracket/pulley assembly: 4GA110-010. A properly jetted #4150-type carburetor must include mechanical secondaries, .120 needle and seat plus a nitrophyll float set. Also, a high-performance, boost referenced fuel pump is required.
These big block systems include a cast aluminum carburetor enclosure assembly for use with Holley #4150-type, Quick Fuel Q-QFT-850-BAN or Demon 825 MD carburetor. The enclosure pressurizes the float bowls and throttle shafts for seamless response and correct air/fuel ratio. The V-7 YSi-Trim compressor includes a 3.33” diameter 10-Rib pulley. Other components include a 3/8” thick, nickel plated, supercharger mounting plate, cast aluminum mounting bracketry/hardware plus 3.5” diameter cast aluminum discharge duct assembly with heat resistant silicon sleeves and premium stainless steel clamps. Also included is a 7” diameter, 10-Rib, 6061-T6 billet aluminum supercharger crank pulley, three-groove, accessory drive crank pulley, pulley spacer plus integrated manual belt tensioner with dual bearing tensioner pulley. While these systems were designed in a “long-type” water pump configuration, “short” water pump adaptability is possible. Also, modifications can be made to run power steering, see notes.
APPLICATIONS INCLUDE: » 1964-1972 Chevelle/Malibu with cowl induction hood With slightly over 23” from crank center line to the top of the enclosure, this system fits under the factory cowl induction hood.
We suggest a compression ratio range of 8:1 to 9.5:1 with 9:1 being ideal. A mild “street” camshaft is best for maximum efficiency. Accessory v-belts may be required depending on accessory configuration and supercharger pulley diameters. Late model motors may require an electrical fuel pump and a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator producing 6 lbs. of pressure static and one additional pound of fuel pressure per pound of boost. Example; 6 lbs. static fuel pressure + 5 lbs. boost pressure = 11 PSI fuel.

CHARGE COOLING In the early 1990s, Vortech performed exhaustive studies on air-to-air charge cooling for use with centrifugal superchargers. The approach seemed attractive given the simplicity and straight-forward application. In each test case study, however, a net loss in boost pressure and horsepower resulted. Since horsepower is strongly dependent on charge-air density, and density in turn is related to both temperature and pressure1, Vortech quickly learned that obtaining good thermal performance from a charge cooler is only half of the challenge. Indeed, the problem with air-to-air cooling was found to be the significant pressure losses associated with long duct runs needed to get the charge air to and from the heat exchanger, which is usually placed up-front, ahead of the radiator. In addition, the air-to-air heat exchanger design incorporated rather lengthy, restrictive passageways which only compounded the problem.
8N301-050
Vortech shelved the idea temporarily and instead focused development efforts on supercharger efficiency, which yields the double benefit of delivering cooler charge air to begin with and a reduction in required drive horsepower, given any specific flow/pressure operating point. As higher compression engines and increased boost levels became more prevalent, Vortech renewed development efforts on highperformance charge cooling systems. Realizing that boost loss was just as important as thermal performance, Vortech turned to an air-to-water type system. This type of system clearly proved its worth. Thermal performance was excellent and it exhibited insignificant frictional (boost) losses which means that for any specific manifold pressure, supercharger drive power would be minimized–a win-win situation. Further, the system would, under most conditions, outperform an air-to-air system.

IGLOO MONDO COOLER®
Today, what Vortech started years ago is becoming the technology of choice within the OE automotive industry. Liquid-air charge cooling can now be seen on some of the most advanced powertrains from Mercedes Benz (Maybach), Ford (SVT/Harley Davidson F-150, 2003 Cobra, et al.), and Jaguar for boosted applications. 1
Basic law for gas density: ρ= P/RT
Vortech’s Maxflow Power Cooler is the aftermarket’s first street/strip, air-to-water charge cooler system. It utilizes a closed-loop water circulation system with a front mounted heat exchanger that allows for effective street operation. Power gains up to 100 horsepower are possible depending on the application, engine, and boost level. This system provides cooler, denser air charges (discharge temperature decrease is approximately 100°F@10 PSIG), allowing more timing with less fuel required. (Greater air discharge temperature reductions are possible with higher boost levels and/or the use of ice chilled water in the reservoir).
VORTECH MAXIMUM COOLING ADVANTAGE » Achieves over 80% effectiveness. » More horsepower is achieved per supercharger PSI of boost. » The compact charge cooler is positioned “in-the-run.” Short and » Supercharger boost and parasitic drive direct ducting absolutely minimizes frictional losses (boost loss).
» Consistently cools the liquid system, even when not in boost, for charge cooling on demand.
power does not have to be increased to overcome boost loss; supercharger will be making less heat in the first place and consume less power doing it.
Each system features our exclusive dual pass, high-flow, air-to-water-to-air cooler unit. The front mounted heat exchanger (cooler radiator) uses a low-restriction plate/fin design and is manufactured from high-grade aluminum. The water reservoir is roto-molded of high-strength plastic polymers for durability. Also included is a heavy-duty water pump, mounting brackets, hoses and hardware.

performance. As such, typical effectiveness values of 70-85% + are routinely measured. Having liquid on the cold side of the exchanger results in several very important advantages. First, water is 23 times more conductive than air, so, the overall heat transfer coefficient is dramatically improved–many times per unit fin area over air-to-air. This affords a much more compact heat exchanger design. Secondly, the pressure loss on the air passage side is greatly reduced by the reduction in heat exchanger size and by the “open” fin area design. Compactness allows the cooler

Individual Power Cooler cores with welded end tanks plus multiple intake and discharge ducting options are available through special order.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND VORTECH CHARGE COOLING SYSTEMS Effectiveness is a term often seen, but also often misused. Strictly speaking, effectiveness refers to the steady state thermal performance of a heat exchanger, and is highly influenced by the flow rates on both the hot and cold side. Numerically, it is stated as a percentage and refers to how close the discharging hot air temperature is to the incoming cooling (fluid) temperature. Thus, it can only be evaluated under fully stabilized, steady state conditions where the hot and cold side flowrates are carefully controlled and monitored. Vortech tests their charge coolers exactly in this manner to determine legitimate effectiveness

Innovative modular design for universal use or with the Ford 5.0L EFI lower manifold types including the 5.0L Truck, SVO 5.0L or 5.8L GT-40 and TFS-R. This system allows ice-chilled water to drastically reduce the charge air temperature entering the engine. It features a triple core double pass internal configuration for superior cooling along with minimal pressure drop, resulting in substantial increases in usable horsepower and torque. Capable of flowing in excess of 2,500 CFM for applications producing 1,700+ HP. Patent Pending.
to be placed directly “in the run” from supercharger to engine–little to no increase in ducting length occurs so ducting losses are absolutely minimized, meaning charge density is maximized. Having a reservoir of cool liquid on-hand takes advantage of available thermal mass or storage of the coolant itself, i.e., the vast majority of boost/power demands are typically of short duration, resulting in very little overall temperature rise of the coolant itself. As the coolant is continuously circulated, cooled and stored “at the ready” at close to ambient temperatures, the charge cooler is always afforded Maximum Cooling Advantage™.

VORTECH FUEL PUMPS Vortech fuel pumps are designed for various applications. To select the pump that best suits your needs, you must first determine the flow requirements and at what pressure this demand must be met. Remember: As fuel pressure requirements rise, fuel flow drops. Flow demands are also elevated by the increase in horsepower. The 8F001-500 fuel pump is specially designed to maintain a high-flow rate at elevated pressures, hence the 40 GPH at 90 PSIG designation. It’s available separately or as a complete kit including wires, relay, hoses, fittings and template.
The 12:1 FMU is standard in many Vortech systems. It is suitable for most applications running with original equipment injectors to maintain an air-to-fuel ratio of approximately 10.8 to 11.5:1 under boost. The pump utilized needs to provide sufficient flow to deliver the fuel pressure required in proportion to boost.

The Vortech Standard Fuel Management Unit (FMU) is designed for use on multi-point electronic fuel injected engines. It is a secondary fuel regulator that installs in series with a stock regulator on the return line to the tank. The unit increases fuel pressure in proportion to boost pressure (this assumes the pump being utilized is of sufficient pressure and flow to deliver the fuel required). All Vortech FMUs feature CNC machined, 6061-T6 aluminum construction and a blue anodized finish.
The 10:1, 8:1 and 7:1 FMUs are for Vortech applications that require less fuel pressure to maintain safe air-to-fuel ratios. The 6:1, 4:1 and 3:1 FMUs were designed for high-output custom applications where larger than stock injectors have been employed. For example, the 6:1 FMU can be used on Mustangs using either 30, 36 or 38 lbs. per-hour injectors. The 4:1 unit was designed for either 38 or 42 lbs. per-hour injectors in the same application. Vortech FMU Recalibration Kits include a new ring, washer and fluorosilicone diaphragm.

Technical Tip: When using an FMU with larger injectors or for fine tuning when other components that alter airflow are being used, Vortech offers an optional air bleed valve. This permits the rate of gain for any of the Vortech FMUs to be reduced by approximately two pounds of pressure per PSI of boost. It allows a 12:1 FMU to perform as a 10:1 unit. To alter the curve even greater, refer to our 8:1, 7:1, 6:1, 4:1 and 3:1 Recalibration Kits.

MAXFLOW FUEL RAILS
FUEL INJECTORS
Designed to meet the needs of both street and racing EFI engines, Vortech’s 1/2” I.D. high-flow fuel rails provide the correct flow rate to the injectors. Extruded from aircraft quality aluminum, then CNC machined, each rail is anodized for appearance and improved corrosion resistance. Included are AN fittings, O-rings and all necessary mounting hardware. All Honda/Acura Fuel Rails include all fittings, brackets, adapters and hardware necessary to connect to factory fuel lines or aftermarket “AN” style fittings.
A consistent fuel supply results in maximum power for optimum performance. Vortech high-impedence fuel injectors ensure balanced fuel delivery to each cylinder.
Note: A threaded O-ring plug is used, instead of welding, to maintain distributor clearance on the driver’s side (Mustang system).

EFI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS
HIGH-FLOW FUEL FILTERS
Vortech fuel pressure regulators feature an adjustment range of approximately 25-80 PSIG. Each unit is manufactured using 6061 T-6 billet aluminum and has a blue anodized finish. A vacuum/pressure port allows for a 1:1 gain when used in boosted applications.
Our machined fuel filters are made from 6061 T-6 billet aluminum and feature a blue anodized finish. They are designed to meet the flow demands of 1500+horsepower racing engines. Filters are available with a standard paper element or a lifetime, washable 35 micron stainless steel element. Both contain all necessary mounting hardware and are machined for -10 AN fittings. -AN reducers can be used for -8 to -4 systems.

Our supercharger/crank strut configurations mate the supercharger input shaft with the crankshaft to eliminate any possible mounting plate flex. Another benefit is a significant reduction in crank snout sideloading from the supercharger belt when put into high levels of tension (common with EFI/Renegade applications with an 8-Rib belt). Grade 8 mounting hardware is included. Strut packages are not recommended for sustained highway/ street use.
» Adjustable billet aluminum center support assembly (allows for minor adjustments in deck height and cylinder head deck thickness)
» Billet aluminum bearing housing assemblies with high-rpm, self-aligning bearings for precise alignment

CRANK PULLEYS AND ASSEMBLIES Vortech pulleys are the highest quality available in the aftermarket. We use lightweight aluminum stock that is CNC machined to SAE standards. Hard anodized coating provides for long belt and pulley life. Crank pulley assemblies include the pulley, belt and all mounting hardware.
Vortech Supercharger Pulleys are machined from 6061 T-6, hard anodized aluminum with the proper profile to maximize surface contact area for precise fit. Each pulley is built to SAE standards. Cog drive pulleys must only be used with applications that employ H/D superchargers and Vortech Race Bypass Valves. Even though pulley retainer assemblies are listed below, you may reuse these existing parts when installing a new pulley. A change in one pulley size will usually effect boost 1-2 PSIG... down in diameter or tooth count, up in boost and vice versa. Please note: Pulley changes may void the Vortech Supercharger Limited Warranty. Standard Pulley

Vortech’s stand alone ignition system units allow cockpit adjustment of timing relative to boost. With a knob mounted in either dash or console, the driver can select from 0° to 4° retard per PSI of boost pressure to a maximum total retard of 20°. This allows normal advance while not in boost and provides the greatest combination of performance, engine safety and reliability when the engine is being pressurized. The Crane HI-6R System is a multiple spark, capacitive discharge, electronic ignition designed for high-performance street, drag racing and marine applications. It provides up to ten times greater spark energy than stock ignitions and allows for cockpit adjustment of ignition timing.
Excellent way of providing additional safeguards against contaminants reaching your supercharger. Includes the adapter, a spin-on filter, pressure hoses, as well as all required fittings.

SUPERCHARGER EXCHANGE SERVICE
SUPERCHARGER REBUILDING SERVICE
For those seeking more than is offered with the Upgrade Service, our Supercharger Exchange Program allows retail customers a credit of up to $1,000 toward the cost of a new unit. Certain limitations and restrictions apply; consult our product support department for more information.
Vortech offers two factory rebuild options. Our Minor Service includes replacement of all bearings, seals, inspection of all supercharger components, balancing and assembly labor. The Major Service includes all of the above plus gears (upgraded to current specifications where applicable).
Please Note: Prior to sending a supercharger to us for service, please call our technical support department for a return authorization number. For upgrades and rebuilding service, if the inspection reveals that additional components and/or labor are needed, the customer will be notified for approval prior to completion. A $100 inspection fee will apply on all upgrades and rebuilds where the customer has decided not to continue due to additional parts and/or labor required. Normal turnaround on factory supercharger services is seven to ten business days. For specific details on any of the above programs, call our product support department or visit our website.
