Dear Pine Crest School Community, On May 22, Pine Crest School’s Class of 2014 walked across the stage of the Broward Center for Performing Arts as their names were called. They accepted their diplomas and, at that moment, they became part of a powerful network of more than 8,000 Pine Crest alumni living, studying, and working in cities around the world. Alumni who visit our campuses may notice new buildings, faculty, staff, and, of course, students. If they were to spend time in our classrooms, they would notice 21st century lessons that are unlike anything they have seen. However, as the title of this issue of The Magazine indicates, Pine Crest remains “True to Tradition.” Our buildings, people, and methods may change, but our mission remains the same:

To offer a challenging academic experience complemented by excellence in the arts and athletics; to develop the character, independence, and leadership of each student; and to provide a collaborative learning community that prepares students to meet the global challenges of our future.

These words motivate and inspire us every day, and in all that we do. They represent the unwavering promise we have made to students since 1934 – a promise of academic rigor, character development, and preparation for life – the foundation on which we have built our success. As we remember and respect the past, we are also focused on the future. Education has changed dramatically since Pine Crest was founded. We take great pride in the fact that we have always been at the forefront of providing an educational experience that is consistently inspired by innovation and advancing best practices. We have an unwavering commitment to offer our students a superb academic and character-building experience. In this issue of The Magazine, you will read stories about alumni who are excelling in the paths they have chosen to follow. You will also read stories about some of the inspiring academic, athletic, fine arts, and philanthropic activities taking place on our campuses. In March, the McMillan family hosted a Celebration of Life in Stacy Auditorium for former Pine Crest President William J. McMillan ’45. Bill was passionate about Pine Crest and played an integral role in developing our School into what it is today; again, we honor him in this issue. Alumni, we welcome you to stay in touch with us. We know that you remain connected with Pine Crest in spirit, and we welcome your active participation in the success of our students, whether it is sharing your expertise or supporting our School through your philanthropy. To everyone, have a wonderful year! Sincerely,

Dana Markham, Ed.D. President

Remembering

William J. McMillan ’45

William J. McMillan, October 8, 1929 – February 7, 2014

Mr. McMillan spoke at the ground breaking ceremony of the new Fort Lauderdale campus in 1964.

I

n March 2014, family, friends, and colleagues gathered in Stacy Auditorium to remember former Pine Crest School Headmaster and President, William J. McMillan. The sentiment among those who attended was universal: it was an honor to know Bill McMillan. Bill watched as his mother, Dr. Mae, formed Pine Crest 80 years ago. He was a proud alumnus of the Class of 1945. After earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees, and serving in the U.S. Army, he returned to Pine Crest first as a teacher, and then as an administrator. He held the positions of headmaster and president from 1965 to 1995. Among his fondest memories were:

• Leading the expansion of our Fort Lauderdale campus from an independent day and boarding school that relied primarily on children of winter visitors to a full-time college preparatory school. • Facilitating a merger of Pine Crest with Boca Raton Academy to create Pine Crest School at Boca Raton in 1987, which was later named the William J. McMillan Campus in his honor. • Committing to diversity and opening enrollment to qualified students from all economic and ethnic groups; serving in a leadership role for the National Association of Independent Schools, the Southern Association of Independent Schools, the Florida Council of Independent Schools; and more.

Mr. McMillan is shown here awarding a fifth grade diploma to Tameka Linnell ’91 during her Lower School Moving Up Ceremony in the late 1980s.

Bill McMillan took pride in many of the facilities that were funded and constructed during his tenure. To him, though, facilities were not nearly as important as what happened inside them, and how they best served our students and faculty. These are just some examples of Mr. McMillan’s longlasting legacy that students will benefit from for years to come. Indeed, Bill McMillan helped shape the foundation of education, character, and leadership that continues to define Pine Crest

School.

Mr. McMillan loved the game of chess, which reflected his forward-thinking leadership style. This photo was included in a 1987 Pine Crest Auction catalog where the winner was invited to have lunch with Mr. McMillan and challenge him to a game of chess.

Jeff Hollander

Board of Trustees Chair

Fellow Pine Crest School Community Members, I hope that each of you had a most enjoyable summer. Our dedicated team has worked diligently to prepare for Pine Crest’s 80th academic year, and there is much excitement on our campuses. Over the past eight years, I have had the pleasure of working with a Board of Trustees who has a vested interest in the success of Pine Crest. Our energy is palpable as we work towards a common commitment of remaining true to tradition while constantly seeking ways to modernize facilities, technology, and programs to support our faculty and students. Recognizing that our faculty are the ones who best understand the academic capabilities and needs of their students, the Trustees empowered more than 100 teachers to provide input for the School’s 2014-19 Strategic Plan. Several themes came out of the planning process, including techniques to recruit and retain the best and brightest faculty; developing a curriculum that creates a model 21st century learning environment; and planning for the enhancement of facilities. You will have opportunities to learn more about the 2014-19 Strategic Plan in the coming months. In the meantime, faculty, staff, and administrators are already implementing several meaningful initiatives that will positively impact our students this year. I want to thank departing Trustees, Sonny Kotite, Bob Moore, and Dan Sheinberg, for their service to the Board, and we welcome the four new Trustees who are introduced on this page. I look forward to working with our most capable President, Dr. Dana Markham, and the 2014-15 Board of Trustees, building on our momentum and advancing the mission of Pine Crest School. Sincerely, Jeff Hollander, Chair Pine Crest School Board of Trustees

lumni from near and far returned to Pine Crest’s Fort Lauderdale campus on Friday, October 11, 2013 to celebrate Homecoming. Members of the Classes of 1963, 1973, 1983, 1988, 1993, and 2003 were invited to take tours of the campus led by student ambassadors. Later that day, more than 250 alumni and their families joined students, faculty, and friends of Pine Crest for a pre-game tailgate party on Roschman Field. As the sun set, everyone filled the West Field stadium with the pep band and cheerleaders to root for the Pine Crest varsity football team against The Benjamin School. Although the outcome was not in Pine Crest’s favor, Panther Pride was alive and well throughout the evening.

Homecoming 2014 is scheduled for Friday, October 17.

Welcoming our newest

Honorary Alumna Mrs. Joan Wing, a dedicated member of Pine Crest’s Upper School Math Department for more than 15 years, was named an Honorary Alumna at graduation on May 22, 2014.

Scott and Joan Wing at the 2014 graduation ceremony. We wish them all the best in their days and years after Pine Crest!

A

16

t the 2014 graduation ceremony, Dr. Dana Markham said about Mrs. Joan Wing, “Our Class of 2014 Honorary Alumna has taught just about every math course at Pine Crest. Her students look forward to class with her each day, which as you can imagine, is not easy to achieve, especially with math.” Dr. Markham told graduates’ families and friends about Mrs. Wing’s homemade cookies, which were somewhat famous at Pine Crest – and delicious.

Mrs. Wing joined the ranks of former faculty and Board members who have been named Honorary Alumni, including her husband, Mr. Scott Wing ’13H. Pine Crest students, parents, and faculty members bid a fond farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Wing in June as they embarked on their well-deserved retirement. Mr. Wing served the faculty and students of Pine Crest in Boca Raton for 28 years, holding leadership positions in the Middle and Lower Schools, and most recently Head of School, Boca Raton.

“For those who do not know, each year, students kept a count of Mrs. Wing’s mistakes,” said Dr. Markhkam. “If she reached a certain number of mistakes, she baked cookies to share with her class. This was not to apologize; this was to show by example that it is OK – and human and normal - to make mistakes.”

“During his tenure, Mr. Wing witnessed buildings, curriculum, and Athletics and Fine Arts offerings change and grow,” said Dr. Markham. “What did not change was his presence and ability to address students and parents by name. This is one reason so many students and parents knew the campus as a community that felt small and warm − like a home.”

Dr. Chad Perlyn ’91 Assistant Professor of Surgery at Florida International University’s College of Medicine and an attending plastic surgeon at Miami Children’s Hospital. Today, Dr. Perlyn is Chief of Plastic Surgery at Florida International University’s College of Medicine and an attending plastic surgeon at Miami Children’s Hospital. His practice is dedicated solely to caring for children and young adults with congenital or acquired anomalies. And, yes, Dr. Perlyn reconstructs ears. He made headlines in 2010 after completely rebuilding the ear of Peterson Exais, a nine-year-old Haitian boy who was trapped under rubble for four days, rescued, and rushed to a tent hospital in Port-auPrince, Haïti. Dr. Perlyn was one of the first surgeons available and has since performed more than 15 surgeries for Peterson. The two formed an extraordinary bond and still speak weekly. “Pine Crest educates students on how to be educated, on how to learn,” said Dr. Perlyn. “I was definitely challenged and pushed to the limit. That environment planted the seed for a life of inquiry. Once you start studying, you never really finish.” Dr. Chad Perlyn ’91

W

hen Dr. Chad Perlyn ’91 was in his second year as an undergraduate English literature student at Northwestern University, he read a Chicago Tribune article about a pediatric plastic surgeon at Children’s Memorial Medical Center in Chicago named Dr. Bruce Bauer.

After completing his general and plastic surgery residency at Washington University/Barnes Hospital in Saint Louis, Dr. Perlyn, spent three years at the University of Oxford in England as an American College of Surgeons Fellow. While completing his doctorate degree in craniofacial molecular biology, he studied why children are born with particular facial birth defects.

The story detailed how Dr. Bauer had reconstructed ears for a fiveyear-old girl from Greece who was born with bilateral microtia, underdevelopment in both ears. Inspired, Chad wrote a letter to Dr. Bauer, and in turn, Dr. Bauer wrote to Chad inviting him to observe an ear reconstruction surgery.

“Parents of children with craniofacial defects want to know why,” said Dr. Perlyn. “The research that we conducted at Oxford continues to help provide parents with better answers.”

“Here I was, a 19-year-old college student, standing in an operating room next to a renowned plastic surgeon and watching him construct an ear for a child,” said Dr. Perlyn. “Looking back at that experience, I know that Pine Crest instilled in me the confidence to reach out to Dr. Bauer in the first place, follow through on his offer to observe the surgery, and conduct myself in a mature and professional manner, even at such a young age.”

For Pine Crest students and young alumni who are thinking about pursuing a career in surgery, Dr. Perlyn says, “There is no better profession than surgery. To change a human being’s life in a finite period of time is extremely satisfying. Surgery is not just a job or a just career − it is a life. It is one entity.”

inquiring minds

Fostering an environment of

Inquiry From pre-kindergarten through senior year, inquiry-driven and project-based learning is a regular part of a Pine Crest School student’s academic journey.

“ Pine Crest teachers are educating students for an unknowable future,” said Dr. Dana Markham, Pine Crest President. “From assignments to physical structure, our classrooms are designed to support more than just the teaching of data and information. Our academic environment promotes knowledge and understanding through deep thinking and exploration − individually and collaboratively − through observation, inquiry, research, and discovery.”

The seventh grade in Boca Raton transformed into a CSI lab for a day. The crime: someone was killing the turtles in the Fathers’ Club Turtle Garden. Students were assigned to interdisciplinary CSI teams with a faculty guide. They relied on knowledge from each of their subject areas to search for clues, gather evidence, and propose solutions.

To gain an understanding of computer science as an art of blending human ideas and digital tools, Lower School students focused on the art and science of programming leading up to the Hour of Code™ event. Faculty first attended training sessions to learn how to code. Then, they facilitated “unplugged” versions of coding. Students drew a series of arrows as a “program” and then asked another student to stack cups following their “code.” Students ended the week with age-appropriate software tutorials. Over the summer, 50 faculty members participated in a 20-hour class to further their coding skills and are eager to implement coding lessons in the classrooms.

As part of the Moon Project, fourth graders on the Boca Raton campus gathered data using student-made clinometers. They observed how the moon changed location and shape, and shared and compared their findings with students from Australia, Brazil, China, and Korea.

By focusing on the process of science instead of the completed project, the Fort Lauderdale fifth grade Kids Inquiry Conference is an alternative to the traditional science fair. Students are encouraged to critically consider the credibility of their own research and draw upon the discoveries of other student-scientists. Over a three-month period, small teams investigated topics such as “Turtle Fin Speed” and “Hamster Intelligence” and then shared the excitement of their discoveries in a non-competitive setting.

Thia Stephan Hyde ’85 An actor, singer, director, and activist, Thia Stephan Hyde ’85 recalls two moments that helped define the direction of her professional career. Thia was a bit lost herself. It was a group of Pine Crest teachers − Mr. Doug Evans, Mr. Bruce Williams, and Mr. Bill Rousseau − who noticed Thia as a “student who needed something.” While she was in Middle School, Mr. Evans helped Thia find her way by giving her an opportunity to perform with the Upper School chorus, the “Singing Pines.” “This made such a huge difference in my life and gave me an early focus,” said Thia. From there, Pine Crest Fine Arts provided Thia with opportunities to grow as a singer, actor, and student director leading up to a 1984-85 Cultural Arts Series senior year lead performance in “Gramercy Ghosts.”

Thia Stephan Hyde ‘85

T

he first was one evening after her performance as a mother in “Dani Girl,” a full-length musical and dramatic comedy that was playing in a new theater in the Bronx. The show touched on an uncomfortable topic: her fictional nine-year-old daughter’s struggle with leukemia. After the show, a woman from the audience approached Thia to say “thank you.” “This mother shared with me that her son had passed away unexpectedly and that she did not have the opportunity to say a proper ‘goodbye’ to him,” said Thia. “Our ‘Dani Girl’ performance gave this grieving mother closure and, in essence, an opportunity to say her ‘goodbye.’” Perhaps Thia related to her character and the woman in the “Dani Girl” audience better than most. Having lost her own mother when she was in fifth grade at Pine Crest,

20

Thia’s second defining moment was after graduating from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She was selected to perform with the Laguna Playhouse on an educational theater tour. After a performance in an underserved, rural town in Southern California, the performers held a question and answer session for the audience. “A little girl said to me, “I never knew there was such a thing in all the world as a play!’” said Thia. “That touched me deeply and made me commit to using theatre to reach a more diverse audience. ”To Pine Crest students and alumni who dream of a career in the arts, Thia advises that they “go for it” and that “there is a beautiful life to be had in the arts.” “Helen Keller said that ‘security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing,’” said Thia. “If you are passionate about making a living in the arts, I can highly recommend the adventure.”

Supporting Classroom Learning through the Arts Participation in the arts has many proven benefits for building students’ social and academic skills.

2014 Boca Raton Pre-Kindergarten Show

F

ine Arts programs have long been a part of Pine Crest tradition. Dance, chorus, band, film, orchestra, visual art, theater – the choices for students are abundant. Do the arts positively impact students’ academic performance? Research into the direct effect of the arts on academic performance populated mainstream media in the ‘90s with the release of the University of California, Irvine’s “Mozart Effect” study. Findings from that study said that college students who listened to 10 minutes of Mozart before taking parts of an intelligence test improved their scores. These results were eventually challenged and downplayed, but subsequent research from other institutions has suggested that long-term instruction in the arts by well-versed instructors may contribute to overall student success in a number of subtle ways. When Pine Crest’s certified music specialist, Mrs. Ashleigh Cicconi, plays an original song on her guitar and sings with first graders about the parts of speech, students are too focused

Learning through music in the classroom

on singing and dancing to realize that they are learning. Mrs. Cicconi uses techniques that are clinical and evidence-based, utilizing the effects of music perception and production to alter pathways and nonmusical skills.

The skills that students develop in the arts – thinking, problem solving, tenacity – are all skills that will be useful in the Pine Crest classrooms, college, the workplace, and beyond. “Learning through music has been shown to improve abilities that affect social and academic skills, including memory, executive functioning, and cognition,” said Mrs. Cicconi, who is

The cast of the fall 2013 Upper School ballet, “Cinderella”

specially trained in neurologic music therapy. “In addition, it is applicable to all grade levels, and it helps increase independence, academic success, and improved social relationships.” In their 2007 book, “Studio Thinking: The Real Benefits of Visual Art Education,” Lois Hetland and Ellen Winner with One Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, with co-authors Shirley Veenema and Kimberly Sheridan, released details about a rigorous study on what the visual arts teach. What they found was that students acquired the ability to engage, persist, learn from mistakes, press ahead, commit and follow through, and envision. “The skills that students develop in the arts - thinking, problem solving, and tenacity - are all skills that will be useful in the Pine Crest classrooms, college, the workplace, and beyond,” said Mr. Larry Mellone, Pine Crest’s Director of Fine Arts.“Offering Fine Arts programming from the youngest pre-kindergarten student to the graduating senior truly distinguishes Pine Crest.”

Evan Kelman ’11 Inspired by his father, a renowned ophthalmologist who was also a talented saxophonist and performer, Evan Kelman ’11 grew up with an appreciation for the arts. To measure his true interest in pursuing film as a path, Evan attended a New York Film Academy summer session in Los Angeles between his freshman and sophomore years at Pine Crest. “I couldn’t get enough of it,” said Evan, who continued to study film at Pine Crest while finding side projects to develop his skills.

Evan Kelman ‘11

I

am continually impacted by the way he approached life,” said Evan. “I think my parents’ passion for musical theater and fine arts definitely impacted me. With their encouragement, I was able to pursue various artistic avenues at an early age, including music and acting.” This avenue eventually granted Evan entrance into the Screen Actors Guild at age 11. Yet, it wasn’t until Middle School Film Production with Mr. Dave Burgess that Evan discovered his love for the other side of the camera. Evan admits that he was “kind of a goofball” at the time. “My script was selected by the class to produce as our project,” said Evan, who was to work as the student director. “Before we began, Mr. Burgess took me outside and said to me ‘you only get to do this if you take it seriously.’ I did, and from that moment on, Pine Crest provided me with the facilities, equipment, and teaching to grow my interest in film.”

22

Evan is now in his senior year at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where he launched Lioneyes Pictures from his dorm room in 2012. His thesis film is titled “Bandito,” which is described as a coming-of-age epic tale of a young boy who sneaks out to join his older brother on a life-changing truck robbery. Noting that film school is competitive and full of talent, Evan advises Pine Crest students who are interested in film to take full advantage of the opportunities that a Pine Crest education provides. “One of my side projects during Upper School was shooting electro house concerts in Miami. When I first started, I had no official permission to be filming. I’d just show up in a black T-shirt with my camera around my neck and tried to act legitimate,” said Evan. “Each time, the bouncers would let me in, and I’d easily get on stage, feet away from the performers. Some performers featured my work on their websites. There really is no obvious path. You have to make your way. Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity to come to you. Find something that inspires you, and give it your all. Then, do it better.”

Developing real-world skills through

Television Production “ Our students learn to work under pressure, meet deadlines, organize, communicate, and collaborate to produce an end product – whether it is a short film, news story, or niche show.”

W

hen first graders on Pine Crest School’s Boca Raton campus studied the development of chicken embryos last March, they produced a show called “Chicken News Network” to help report their findings. As an end-of-year Shared Studio Project in Upper School, freshmen in Physics Honors produced news segments to explain complex physics topics to an audience. Whether they use the studios and equipment as part of an academic class project or choose to explore their film and news interests as an elective in Middle and Upper School, Pine Crest students have the equipment, facilities, and faculty they need to develop real-world skills using the broadcast medium.

“Our students learn to work under pressure, meet deadlines, organize, communicate, and collaborate to produce an end product – whether it is a short film, news story, or niche show,” said Dave Burgess, Director of Pine Crest’s film and television program. Middle and Upper School film and broadcasting students attended the 2014 Student Television Network Conference, held in March in Orlando. The conference theme was “Keepin’ it Real” to highlight a focus on ethics and telling stories with credibility and honesty. Student journalists heard advice on how to maintain facts and integrity in their reporting, and film and video students were encouraged to avoid repetition and manipulation.

PCTV Studio

“It takes a tremendous amount of discipline and diligence to use original ideas and work to boil down a complex topic into a limited amount of time,” said Mr. Burgess. “These are skills that students will use in the classroom and beyond, regardless of whether they are interested in pursuing a career in film or television.” PCTV will live stream Athletics and Fine Arts events throughout the year. Ella Wurth ’13 After record-setting 2012-13 cross country and track seasons for Pine Crest, Ella Wurth ’13 took her distance running career to the collegiate level. Throughout her freshman year at Penn, Ella felt well-prepared academically and athletically. Her Pine Crest coaches and teammates kept in touch with her throughout the year to cheer her on, often texting her inspirational messages before her Penn meets. “The rigor at Pine Crest definitely prepared me for balancing challenging classes with a demanding running schedule,” said Ella. “It takes discipline to go to class, practice, finish homework, get to bed at a reasonable time, and be ready to perform the next day. Juggling academics with multiple extracurriculars throughout my Upper School experience was like a dress rehearsal for my introduction to life at Penn.” Although she is still undecided, Ella is leaning toward pursuing degrees in economics and consumer psychology at Penn.

Ella Wurth ‘13

E

lla, who now runs year-round for the University of Pennsylvania cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams, credits Pine Crest’s phenomenal coaching, challenging practices, and a determined and supportive team for a successful senior year season. “We were constantly pushing each other and celebrating each other’s wins,” said Ella, who was on hand to watch Julia Montgomery ’16 break her record in the 1,600 meter event this year at the Dade Christian Invitational meet. “I was ecstatic for Julia — defending two state championships as a sophomore is an unbelievable feat. Watching the team place so high too is even more exciting — individual medals are rewarding, but nothing compares to sharing a win with your teammates.”

24

Her advice to the rising distance runners at Pine Crest: “Aim high. Have fun. Finish hard. Practice is not an option — make the commitment, and you’ll continue to see results.”

Setting the Bar High for

Girls’ Distance Running Julia Montgomery ’16 leads the pack with Tsion Yared ’20 close by in the fourth spot during the 2014 FHSAA Track & Field Championships. The 2014 event was the best in Pine Crest history for the girls’ and boys’ teams. The girls placed third for the second year in a row, the highest finishes in Pine Crest history, and the boys tied for sixth for their highest-ever finish. Pine Crest Middle School girls won their cross country State Championship and their track State Championship, their second in three years.

T

o say that Pine Crest School girls distance runners are a force is an understatement. Setting the bar high for younger runners, Ella Wurth ’13 and Savanna Gornisiewicz ’13 were runners up in state cross country and third at state in track during 2012-13, the highest in Pine Crest’s 79-year history. “Ella and Savanna were leaders by example for our Upper and Middle School student-athletes,” said Pine Crest Cross Country and Track and Field Coach, Paul Baur. The outlook is strong for the 2014-15 long distance seasons, with all runners returning and a team average that is better than ever. Julia Montgomery ’16 is the current FHSAA girls cross country and 1,600 meter track champion, and she was the runner-up in the

3,200 meter event in 2014. Katherine Jovanovic ’17 placed sixth in the 3,200 meter run. As a sixth grader competing at the high school level, Tsion Yared ’20 placed third in the 1,600 meter and fourth in the 3,200 meter event. Julia, Katherine, Tsion, and Amanda Schwartz ’20 were runners-up in the 4 x 800 meter relay event. “Their achievements are not done on talent alone, ”said Paul Baur, Director and Head Coach for Pine Crest’s Cross Country and Track Program. “You have to want it, and they do. Our student-athletes put in the time. They have an amazing work ethic.” During the summer, girls distance runners spent one week at Camp Highlander in North Carolina to grow as a team and prepare for the fall cross country season. Independently, each student-athlete logged miles

in June, July, and August. “Long distance running is a perfect sport for a student,” said Coach Baur. “Just like in the classroom, our student-athletes are hard core. They have the discipline and dedication to get it done.” Coach Baur added that being a dedicated long distance runner requires an extreme focus on goal setting and constantly measuring of personal records versus the clock versus competitors and teammates. “Most importantly, these girls have become a tight circle of friends who support each other on and off the course,” said Coach Baur. “That is a bond that they will have for years to come.” GO PANTHERS! Heather Geronemus ’97 Heather Geronemus ’97 remembers her first volunteering experience vividly. She was five years old and walking in the Broward Mall with her mother. source projects and track hours for students by serving on Pine Crest’s Community Service Board through graduation. “I loved that even the smallest thing – like a group of Pine Crest dancers teaching children a routine at the Jack & Jill Children’s Center – was more important to those children than we could have imagined,” said Heather. “Making those connections with people played an important role in my lifelong commitment to community service.” While at New York University, she became a leader for the Jewish Heritage Program, supporting and developing student mentoring, peer networking, and education programs. One of her favorite projects was delivering kosher meals and visiting with homebound seniors during the Jewish holidays.

“ was wearing a T-shirt that said ‘Hug Me. I’m U.G.L.Y.,’ ”said Heather. Heather’s mother, a board member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s South Florida Chapter, and was soliciting restaurants to participate in the Society’s annual Ugliest Bartender Contest. Heather was following her mother’s lead by wearing an event T-shirt. A horrified woman stopped Heather in the mall to assure her that she was not ugly. Heather explained that U.G.L.Y. stood for “Understanding. Giving. Loving. You.” and proceded to explain the fundraiser.

“Pine Crest instilled in me a discipline that helped me balance academics with training as a professional ballerina and continuing to serve others while at NYU,” said Heather. In 2009, after spending years helping others through service, tragedy struck her own family. Her father, Dr. Robert Geronemus, was killed by a car on a pedestrian DUI hit and run after speaking at a medical conference dinner in Miami just days before his 61st birthday. Heather chairs Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale in his memory and works passionately toward inspiring others to make smart choices.

“If you know me now, you would have a hard time believing I was painfully shy as a child,” said Heather. “I had a bigger purpose that day. I found my voice.”

In addition to her MADD advocacy, Heather serves on Pine Crest’s Advisory Council and is a Public Relations Specialist at Ultimate Software in Weston where, in addition to media relations, she helps coordinate the company’s “Ulti Service Days.” She was recently honored to be named as one of South Florida Business Journal’s “40 Under 40.”

Heather did not stop there. When she joined the Pine Crest School family as a sixth grader, she was asked to lead the Class of 1997’s community service efforts, and she continued to

“Giving, whether it is your time, energy, money, or ideas, is the single best way to make our world a better place,” said Heather.

WELCOME 28

A M e s s a g e f r om W il l Dav i s on

Dear Pine Crest Community, It has been a stellar year for Pine Crest students. They have surpassed their own high expectations in the classroom, in regional and national competitions, on playing fields, and on stage. Pine Crest’s strength is due to its commitment to academic excellence that is embraced by our students, parents, faculty, and alumni. The 2013-14 school year has also benefited from greater levels of engagement with our graduates. Highly successful homecoming and reunion events in the fall have been followed up with regional events in San Francisco, Boston, Washington, D.C., and New York City. Planning is underway for the homecoming and reunion festivities to be held on October 17 and 18, 2014. In addition to alumni involvement, our Parents’ Associations, Admission Ambassadors, Founder’s Council, Advisory Council, and Auction Volunteers have provided outstanding support in enhancing the everyday teaching and learning environments for our students and faculty. Philanthropically, the Pine Crest family has been extraordinarily generous. Through the support of our alumni, parents, and friends, combined with the tireless work of our Pine Crest Fund volunteers, we met, surpassed, and set a new giving record, which was led by the faculty, administration, and trustees with their outstanding 100 percent participation! Our Class of 2014 was also involved in supporting the School philanthropically through the establishment of the Senior Class Teaching Award for a faculty member who best epitomizes passion for teaching, academic rigor, and expertise in his or her discipline. While we already miss the outstanding Class of 2014, we look forward to welcoming them as active and engaged alumni, and look forward to taking pride in all of their accomplishments soon to follow. Thank you to everyone who has partnered with us to uphold our commitment to academic excellence, character, and leadership that serves as the foundation of a Pine Crest education. Sincerely,

Will Davison Vice President of External Relations

Supporting Outstanding Classroom Instruction True to Tradition: Recognizing Philanthropy The Columns Society honors those donors who are the mainstay of support to Pine Crest School. Members of the Columns Society are recognized by having their names placed on a permanent bronze plaque displayed on the campus of their choice. They are also honored at a reception in the year following their initial gift. Membership is gained through a total unrestricted gift of $15,000 to The Pine Crest Fund or an unrestricted gift of $3,000 to The Pine Crest Fund plus a signed four-year pledge of $3,000 per year to The Pine Crest Fund. After their pledge of $15,000 has been fulfilled, members are invited to remain active in the Columns Society by continuing their annual support with gifts to The Pine Crest Fund of $3,000 per year. We thank the following families for their new membership in this year’s Columns Society: Anonymous (1) Larissa and Joshua Abrams Kendall Donaldson and Scott Anagnoste Jennifer and G. arai Gutierrez-Rodriguez, a Middle School Spanish and French teacher on Pine Crest’s Fort Lauderdale campus, was the first recipient of the Siegler Family Distinguished Teaching Award in February 2014. Sra. Gutierrez-Rodriguez was nominated for this Award because of her willingness and initiative to go above and beyond for students, and for challenging them appropriately each and every day. All Pine Crest teaching awards are based on merit and measurable criteria. Nominees illustrate, through classroom activity, a genuine commitment and connection to students that exceeds Pine Crest’s already high expectations of professional performance. Award winners are selected by a committee of administrators representing all divisions and both campuses. Made possible by the generosity of Pine Crest parents, Barbara and Gary Siegler, the Siegler Family Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes, values, and rewards teachers who deliver outstanding classroom instruction. Pine Crest School expresses our deep appreciation to the Sieglers for their investment in our faculty.

Speaking of numbers, at least 20 seniors have siblings in the ninth grade. • There are six Sams, four Brandons, and three Lizzies, along with five sets of twins. Another has a copyrighted song on iTunes. • Some of the different languages spoken at home include: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Creole, Farsi, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Urdu. Three students have already been admitted to medical school.

Ideal Careers When asked what their ideal careers may be, the best answer, according to Mrs. Hunt was, “Getting paid to do something that I love.” “That describes my job,” said Mrs. Hunt. “What a treat to come to work every day to a job that I love. You are the reason that we all do what we do!”
