President's Message Michael Murphy

(https://www.fallingwater.org/), (https://www.nemacolin.com/), (http://kentuckknob.com/).

Did you know our own Ron Gordon has been your annual Parade Chair since 2015! Naturally, Ron attended Parade, but a very large contingent of Chesapeake Region members also attended the PCA Parade on July 8th through 14th at Tan-TarA Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri, and most of them drove alone or in a coordinated group! Steve Wood is the administer of a PCACHS What’s App page that he started for the Jay Peak Parade in 2015 and has been invaluable in helping PCACHS Parade attendees stay coordinated before, during and after the Parade. Please let me know if you would like to join the What’s App PCACHS page. Just send me an email at President@pcachs.org. Thanks to Minta Miller, Membership Chair, we have a beautiful group photo of the PCACHS Parade Attendees on the next page. Good to know that all of our Parade attendees made it home safely.

Keystone State Jaunt PCA-CHS 2018 Tour & Rally Event No. 8 – Aug. 12, Sunday Our driving tour to Pennsylvania on Aug. 12 will take us back to Wyndridge Farm in Dallastown, a few miles north of the Maryland line. All of us who took part in last year’s “Mason-Dixon Line Tour” enjoyed our lunch in that lovely restaurant and brewery. Subsequently, a good number of us have returned there several times to dine and enjoy many happy hours.

This year our lunch destination will be the same, but this one-hour drive to Pennsylvania has a new name because it features a totally different route – a much better one. Some of the roads will be familiar to those who have taken part in our previous tours, but the combination of scenic back roads will be new this time. And thoroughly delightful. Note that this 42-mile tour will be held on a Sunday.

GATHERING PLACE, 9:30 AM on Aug. 12 Kecco's Woodfire Kitchen, 114 Westminster Pike (MD-140), Reisterstown, MD 21136. We will start gathering at 9:30 AM, hold a drivers’ meeting at 9:45 AM and depart at 10:00 AM.

REGISTRATION AND LUNCH Sign up for this driving tour at www.clubregistration.net from 1:00 PM on July 31st through 1:00 PM on Aug. 8th, Eastern time. A $10 per person registration fee will be charged. This will cover the cost of a house salad and a special bar setup, which will be ready upon our arrival. Participants will pay for their own food and drink orders. We will order a la carte from Wyndridge Farm’s regular restaurant menu, but we will be seated at “The Barn,” where indoor wedding receptions are usually held. We need to know the name of every driver and passenger who will take part in the tour, and the number of cars that will join the caravan. Driving instructions and updates will be sent to the e-mail addresses provided to ClubRegistration.net. Please send questions to tour@pcachs.org. 19

Catoctin Mountain Summer Tour PCA-CHS 2018 Tour & Rally Event No. 9 – Aug. 26, Sunday

Our Catoctin Mountain Summer Tour on Aug. 26 will take us on a 75-mile drive through some of the most enjoyable back roads in Carroll and Frederick counties. If you plan to join only one of our 20 tours and rallies this year, you should definitely consider this one. This is one of our major driving events. It features a route that is not only scenic but also twisty, undulating and smooth. Our lunch buffet will be held at the Catoctin Hall of the lovely Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville. Its Lock, Stock & Barrel Grill is a good place to have a meal after a round of golf or while driving for fun in the area. A PCA Chesapeake tour led by Bob Purgason, Steve Graham and Mike Cook took us to this wonderful venue in June 2014. MEETING PLACE We will assemble at 8:30 AM on Aug. 26, Sunday, at the parking lot of Kecco's Woodfire Kitchen, 114 Westminster Pike (MD-140), Reisterstown, MD 21136. We will hold a drivers’ meeting at 9:00 and depart by 9:30 AM. After about an hour on the road, we will have a pit stop in Thurmont. We will reach Musket Ridge before noon. REGISTRATION Sign up for this driving tour at www.clubregistration.net from 1:00 PM on Aug. 4 through 1:00 PM on Aug. 20, Eastern time. A registration fee will be charged (to be set by Aug. 4). The fee will cover the all-inclusive cost of lunch. Details will be posted on ClubRegistration.net. We need to know the name of every driver and passenger who will take part in the tour, and the number of cars that will join the caravan. Driving instructions and updates will be sent to the e-mail addresses provided to ClubRegistration.net. Please send questions to tour@pcachs.org.

Tech Session Sept 22 Randy Richter

Have you been waiting for another Tech Session? Well your wait is over. We have a wonderful event planned on September 22nd with Mark Miller and his team at Westminster Speed and Sound (WSS). The team at Westminster Speed & Sound are acknowledged experts in the area of high performance car audio, hidden radar detectors, car alarms, remote starting devices, navigation systems, bluetooth integration, window tint, paint protection film, and backup cameras/ collision avoidance. On a personal note, I have known Mark Miller, the owner, professionally for about 12 years. The WSS team has always impressed me with their careful product selection and their commitment to excellence. They have won multiple awards for their work, and for years when anyone would ask me about upgraded car audio or accessories installation, they were my one and only recommended shop. The WSS team has been in business for forty-nine years and are the recipients of numerous awards including: • • • •

Best Car Stereo Shop by Baltimore Magazine Eight time winner of one of the top Mobile Electronics Retailers in the nation by Mobile Electronics Magazine Trek bicycle race team chose them to outfit their vehicle with a complete audio system Lexus race team chose them to outfit their vehicle with a state of the art audio/video system

Cars & Movies!

Bob Gutjahr

Summer time means lazy Saturdays, and we can’t think of a better way to gather together for a relaxing time than at the movies. So forget about cars and coffee for just one Saturday morning! Let’s do Cars and a Movie on a Saturday night! Do you remember the Drive-In Movie Theatre? It is throwback to an earlier time, and is a testament to the popularity of automobiles in the latter half of the 20th Century. By 1958 there were 5,000 drive-in movie theatres in the United States - but with television and then color television, these theatres began to close and by the 1980s there are fewer than 800 left in operation. Some of these theaters still exist, and one of the more famous is right in our Region in Essex, MD, just outside of Baltimore. The Bengies Drive-In Theatre (http:// www.bengies.com/) features the BIGGEST movie theatre screen in the USA (measuring 52 feet high and 120 feet wide. 6,240sqft) with a digitally projected picture devoid of cropping. If you haven’t been, going to Bengie’s is like going Back to the Future- right into the Fifties. On almost every Friday and Saturday night through September, Bengies features classic cartoons, vintage trailers and intermissions clips, in-car heaters and Dusk till Dawn shows! It is kitschy and a wonderful time, particularly if you’ve never experienced a drive in movie. Our visit to Bengie’s will be on Saturday night, 25 August. We will link up on the rise about 20 rows back from the screen at 6:30 PM. Ellen and I will get there early to plant our Region flag, but please understand that we cannot hold or reserve spaces. So get there early enough to build our own little paddock. You can bring your own picnic, or better, take advantage of their retro Fifties snack bar. Bring lawn chairs if you don’t want to watch the show from your Porsche. This is recommended, along with a blanket- it may get cold after sundown. Please note that a radio is required to listen to the movies- you'll be glad you’ll have your Blaupunkt because their state-of-the-art FM broadcast system will truly impress you (AM broadcast is provided as well for your convenience.) In the past, Ellen and I have brought a battery charged boom box to listen next to our lawn chairs- we find this works best. The movies start at night fall. There will be – count-em! - three movies at this time of the year. The first two flicks will be contemporary releases. The third may be contemporary, but it is usually a horror movie. If you arrive around 6:30 PM, we’ll have about 90 minutes or so to eat, snack, swap stories, and get ready for the show.

Chesapeake Region

Cars & Movies!

Bob Gutjahr

And now, to answer your FAQs: 1. We do not know what movies they will show on our evening out. Check the website as the date approaches. 2. Admission to the theatre is $10 per person and if you want to bring your own food you need to pay a $7 per car food fee. Cash only. CASH only. 3. As with all Fifties-era Drive-ins, Bengies has a playground for kids. So bring the family if the movies are appropriately rated. 4. If it’s a nice evening, the theater will be crowded with families and a variety of vehicles (READ: mini vans and SUVs). You cannot take up two spaces to protect your Porsche. One space per vehicle. Arrive early so we can park and watch the movies together. 5. Please read the house rules below and on the website. They are very serious about headlights. Cover ‘em if you have daytime running lights. 6. We will cancel the event if it rains We hope you plan on attending. See you on Saturday night, 25 August! than 23 August so we have a feel for numbers.

RSVP to Ellen and Bob not later

Chesapeake Region

Cars & Movies!

Bob Gutjahr

Please read their house rules before you make the trip.

BENGIE HOUSE RULES: In any given night 60% of the crowd are regulars and understand our policies. 40% are new to the experience. It is very difficult for these folks to arrive and expect us to teach them everything they need to know about attending a drive-in. Most of which is common sense. To enable us to bring the crowd in quickly and efficiently here is what new patron needs to know prior to arriving to the Bengies Drive-in Theatre: 1) HEADLIGHTS, DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS & "AUTOMATIC" vehicle lights are trouble for us and our regular patrons. Bring brown paper and tape to cover these lights OR check your owners manual to see if you can gain complete control of them. Short of having the ability to keep the lights out, plan on covering them. 2) No photographing, image capturing, or audio recording anywhere on the premises, this includes the entrance road. 3) Cash only at the Box Office. Have your currency ready, do not arrive at the box office and hold up the line by fishing your wallet out of your pocket or purse. If you are on your cell phone while trying to purchase a ticket you will be shown the exit. YES, YOUR ADMISSION INCLUDES ALL MOVIES SHOWING THE NIGHT YOU ARRIVE, unless otherwise indicated. 4) Obey all signs on the roadway. 5) Vehicles with one person can be refused entry on busy nights. If you are joining a party of friends consider parking outside of the theatre and simply walking to the box office to purchase your ticket (see the bottom of this page). 6) During busy times there are people directing traffic on the roadway. Give them the utmost attention and courtesy. DO NOT ask this person questions as they are trying to watch and guide traffic in four directions. Distracting them is dangerous for all concerned. •Driver's PLEASE turn off your cell phones, read the signs and obey the traffic director.

•Just prior to turning right on to the entrance road please roll down your window so you can hear the traffic director's instructions. • Stay close to the vehicle in front of you, we are trying to keep from cars from backing up on Eastern Ave. (MD Sate route 150) •There will be no left turns from the west bound lane during these busy times. If it occurs, it is too dangerous to back your vehicle out, so you will sit in a rather long line only to be shown the exit. •If you cut into the line from the left-hand lane you will also sit in a long line to be shown the exit. No cheating. (Warning if you are turning left out of Bengies RD. near the newly constructed Royal Farm store you too will not be allowed to turn left and cut into the line.) •While you are on Eastern Ave. do not swing around traffic to enter, stay in the right lane on Eastern Ave at all times. •Do not change lanes on the entrance roadway unless directed to do so. 7) Once inside, PLEASE read the "House Rules and Policies" that are in the flyer handed out to each car at the Box Office BEFORE you leave your vehicle. (Or you may read them here on line by clicking on the Tab for House Rules, or click here: http://www.bengies.com/ HouseRules.php

These "House Rules and Policies" are important to the smooth operation and are things our patrons need to know because all of them are STRICTLY enforced. Most people realize that these are also a guide on "how to attend the Bengies Drive-In Theatre." West Virginia Grand Tour PCA-CHS 2018 Tour & Rally Event No. 5 – June 1 to 3 By Aniano Arao Co-Chair, Tour & Rally Committee

PCA Chesapeake's first West Virginia Grand Tour, held in early June 2017, attracted 44 members in 23 cars. The second edition, held in early June 2018, originally drew 47 registrants in 25 cars, but unfavorable weather forecasts and family emergencies eventually whittled down the number of participants to 35 in 19 cars. Still, that outcome was better than had been expected under the circumstances. During the three days we were on the road, our persistence was rewarded: The weather turned out much better than feared – mostly dry and partly sunny. The thunderstorms that were supposed to occur from June 1st to the 3rd did not materialize, except for a very short period during the tour's first day and for another brief spell during the second day. We drove mostly on scenic and delightful back roads, spending as little time as possible on freeways and major highways. I had divided the route into five stages. Stage 1 on June 1 took us from the Collectors Car Corral in Owings Mills to a Panera Bread in Frederick, for a pit stop, and then to Tari’s Café in Berkeley Springs, WV, for lunch. Stage 2 took us deeper into West Virginia, to the wonderful Stonewall Resort in Roanoke. We spent two nights at this AAA 4-Diamond venue, enjoying two breakfasts and two dinners there. Though this tour was primarily a driving event, we did visit two major attractions. On June 2nd, Stage 3 took us from our Roanoke home base to the 1,700-foot-long New River Gorge Bridge north of Fayetteville. The National Park Service says this bridge is the longest steel span in the Western Hemisphere and the third highest in the United States. Wikipedia says it was for many years the world's longest single-span arch bridge; it is now the fourth longest. At 876 feet above the New River, it is nearly as high up as the Eiffel Tower. After crossing the bridge, we had a good lunch at the Pies & Pints restaurant in nearby Fayetteville. We then proceeded to a scenic overlook where we were able to view the bridge from the side and below.

As a consequence of unfavorable weather forecasts for one area where Stage 4 was going to pass, I gave everyone the option of skipping the next stage and returning to the Stonewall Resort early. Many decided to take this option, in conjunction with a drive to a spot that offered an even more dramatic view of the bridge. This side of the state was blessed with good weather. West Virginia Grand Tour Seven of us in four cars opted to proceed with the 4-hour-long Stage 4, which took us through some of West Virginia’s most awesome roads, including WV-15. We did encounter some rain and fog, as expected, but not for long. What we were not prepared for was a small rockslide on the thrilling Helvetia-Adolph Road. The state’s Highway Department had a small crew at work there, clearing the rocks away with a front-end loader. One of the men assured me that the rest of the way was fine. So we gingerly drove through the rock-strewn area, which turned out to be small. Almost as soon as we left the scene, we were greeted by clear and sunny weather.

Virginians Steve and Lynn drove Stage 4 on their own just behind us and said they encountered no rocks and no road crew. Apparently, the road clearing had been completed by the time they came along. June 3rd started out foggy, but it cleared up as we drove away from Stonewall Resort on our way to The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs. Many picked Stage 5, which I had shortened slightly at the last minute, as their favorite portion of our 3-day driving tour – especially those who had skipped and missed Stage 4. We drove south on US-219 and WV-92, two of the most delightful old-fashioned highways in the country – scenic, twisty, smooth and undulating. We mostly had the latter to ourselves until we reached White Sulphur Springs. At The Greenbrier, we had lunch at Sam Snead’s, the restaurant at the golf club. Twenty of us then took a 90minute guided tour of the 240-year-old resort’s formerly secret nuclear war bunker, built during the Cold War for members of Congress. It was fascinating, made all the more enjoyable by our excellent guide. The end of that bunker visit was the conclusion of our three-day West Virginia Grand Tour. Everyone headed home on their own, via the quickest route, through the Interstates – I-64, I-81 and I-70. Those who started out from Owings Mills and returned to that part of Maryland after the tour drove a total of about 1,000 miles – a grand, hence event's name. Also grand were The Greenbrier and the state's best roads and scenery. And the memories.

Ice Cream Tour PCA-CHS 2018 Tour No. 7, July 14 By Aniano Arao Co-Chair, Tour & Rally Committee To welcome the summer of 2018, 71 Porsche Club of America members and guests in 35 Porsches took part in a Saturday afternoon ice cream run on July 14. Our delightful 90-minute drive took us to the Prigle Family Creamery in Glen Arm, Maryland. The 52mile scenic and twisty route in northern Baltimore County was created, volunteered and presented by Steve Graham, PCA Chesapeake's executive vice president. He served as the event's guest tour master.

Naturally, the drive that Steve designed and led was enjoyed and praised by all the participants. This came as no surprise, since he had formerly served as tour master, rally master and co-chairman of PCA Chesapeake's Tour & Rally Committee. We divided the 35 cars into two groups – 17 and 18. They spanned 50 model years, from 1968 to 2018, covering 71 percent of Porsche's 70-year history as a car maker. Steve and Janice Graham led the first group. Mark Epstein and Wendy Tand led the second group. Thanks to the leading roles they played and the kind assistance of other PCA members, I managed to find some time to shoot a number of photos during the ice cream run. I am pleased to share them here.
