I NNOVATION AT ITS F INEST
It was a beautiful sunny morning in the state’s capital at Porsche of Annapolis’s new state of the art facility. The Chesapeake Region tech committee had arranged an overview of the 992 and 991.2 GT3RS suspension’s with Goldmeister Tech, Andy Coons.
The event started out with a brief overview of the beautiful 991.2 GT3RS which was owned by our own Steve Groh. Andy explained the operation of the McPherson strut suspension which has been used by nearly every manufacturer in the world for many years, including Porsche. It is an independent suspension based around a triangular design featuring a lower control arm and a radius rod. Its design features only a few moving parts making it very reliable and maintenance friendly. A proven design not only on the street but in every race circuit around the world.
When Porsche introduced the 992 GT3RS they dug into their motorsports toolbox and brought out their full race inspired suspension, the double wishbone. This was first used in 2021 in the 911 Cup cars, making it the perfect choice for the beast known at the 992 GT3RS.
It is a more complex design, allowing better control of caster, camber and the placement of the shock. The shock now moves independently of the tire given better control, but it also takes up a lot more room due to the attachment points of the control arms. This makes the frunk area narrower on the 992 GT3RS, but who needs that in a race car anyway. The increase in downforce in the 992GT3RS is beautifully crafted by fully profiled control arms, sway bars, carbon fiber end links and nearly everything the air hits traveling down the road. If you have not seen the underside of the workings on the car its impressive and worth crawling on the ground for. The aero also extends onto the belly pans of the vehicle, Porshe uses every bit of air to keep the car glued to the ground, the double wishbone allows even a lower center of gravity. Porsche claims the car creates over 900 lbs of downforce at 124mph and nearly 1900 lbs at 177mph, that is nearly double of the previous GT3RS.
The Porsche Club of America Chesapeake Region Tech Committee would like to thank Porsche of Annapolis for hosting this event.
