WhatsApp

Steve Wood & James B. Beavan III

WhatsApp is a platform neutral smartphone application that is currently being used as a grassroots social platform for Chesapeake Region. It is not a PCA sponsored communication medium, and thus does not have Moderators. It is an honor system for a positive chat room environment to discuss Porsche & sports vehicle only related topics. Chesapeake WhatsApp currently has over 60 participants (& growing). It is also a great place to share & discuss upcoming PCA events and Porsche products. Note that once you are added, you will not see any previously loaded posts. Once you are active, for the benefit of everyone, please say Hi & introduce yourself. To add WhatsApp to your phone simply go to https://www.whatsapp.com/download/ and download the software. Then setup your profile which will allow you to see what contacts currently on your mobile device are using WhatsApp. One advantage to WhatsApp over SMS is it can connect to WiFi in places where cell service may be weak and allows more files to be submitted. Once you are setup on WhatsApp, please email your name and phone number to the WhatsApp admin at publicity@pcachs.org and we will add you asap to the group chat, you will also get a personal notification from the admin via WhatsApp.

Top Housekeeping Tips for the WhatsApp Chat #1: Clear the Chat By default, the WhatsApp chat can set the option to immediately save any pictures posted to the chat, into your camera roll. This can result in large number of photos, videos consuming storage on your smartphone. You may want to change that setting, by executing the following: 1. Click on the top bar of the chat 2. Scroll down to the bottom & click on the red “Clear Chat”. 3. It will give you the option to delete all posts,... or to delete all EXCEPT “Starred” messages. (.... you can “star” a pic or video or someone’s post that has a great URL link to a Porsche site, which allows you to clear your chat, but retain those which you prefer to keep. To Star a post, press & hold on the top bar of that post)

#2: Notifications Most participants prefer not have the phone beep every time one of the members decides to post to chat. This is especially important during sleeping hours, when some members can be in any time zone across the world. Steps: 1. Hit the Blue left arrow button at the top left 2. Select the “Settings” button on the very bottom white bar 3. Select “Notifications” & set your preferences for turning them off.

Bob Rassa

A monthly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 40, 30, 25 years ago 40 years ago (February 1980) found your writer as President [what, again??] who allowed that the Region would provide what members wanted. Shorted business meetings? You got it! More tech sessions? You got it! More social events? Yep, you will have it. Entertainment at meetings? Yes, we will do it. We noted the “area membership” coordinators, for Annapolis, Columbia and Baltimore. Membership Meetings were back at the Holiday Inn Reisterstown Rd but the Board met separately the prior week at the Country Fare Inn [and for the life of me I cannot recall why we did this]. The PATTER also contained a cool story from Chesapeake Challenge 12, wherein Riesentoter Region’s Bob Russo [Hmmm, long-lost cousin who can’t spell?] had won the overall Knowlton Long Trophy. Shortly after concluding the Challenge, it was found that a small scoring error had occurred and in fact Potomac Region’s Bob Buchler actually won the Challenge and should have received the Long Trophy. So, the Chesapeake Board decided to purchase a duplicate Long trophy for Bob Buchler, and this was reported in meeting minutes. Shortly after that, a package arrived from Bob Russo – containing his Long Trophy, with a note explaining that he saw the minutes and realized that he wasn’t the winner, so here’s the trophy. Talk about good sportsmanship!! So, the Region bought a special trophy for Bob Russo with the engraving” Bob Russo. A Super Driver and Good Sportsman”. A report on the Doc Sullivan afterholiday gathering indicated that 100 members and guests attended. The treasury stood at $795.98. A wine & cheese party was announced for March at Towson Valley Motors, with focus on wine tasting from local vineyards. VP Haven Frank did a piece on how to mount 6x9 oval speakers in the front door pockets of a series 1 or 2 911, and the membership report showed 1,771 total members (active + family-active). New members were announced as Rod Rodriguez, Shawn and Beverly Millet, James & Daisy Murphy, Ken Cuneo, and Justis Carmen [hello, are any of you still around?]. In February 1990, 30 years ago, Dennis Howard was President [what, again??} and the PATTER showed up with a pink cover. Dennis’ message was, “to the 88% of club members who do not attend any meeting or events throughout the year, why don’t you get involved and get your $36 worth?” The monthly meetings were at the Country Fare Inn, and the agenda was announced as “Attitude adjustment program and member survey forum to loosen you up, get comfortable and launch the new decade with some great ideas.” Bill Adler had a nice piece on 944 tips, addressing drips, rattles, leaks, and more. Lee Raskin had a piece on how to pronounce Porsche, like 1 syllable or two? He allowed that he used to use one syllable and invited reader comments. [Memo to Lee: Dr. Wolfgang Porsche and Mr. Hans-Peter Porsche both pronounce it with two syllables; I am thinking they should know]. The after-holiday party at Turf Valley Country Club [we had long since lost our friend Doc Sullivan] consisted or a mere 14 couples, who apparently enjoyed themselves greatly. Tech Event Leap Year Special Earlbeck and Richter In celebration of this leap year your Tech Chairs have created two events in one month!

WHAT #1: Tech Event at Porsche Towson On The Game Changing Taycan WHEN: Saturday, February 8th 2020 from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM WHERE: Porsche Towson, 700 Kenilworth Drive, Towson, MD 21204

Registration—link Register each driver and guest on MotorsporReg.com www.motorsportreg.com Note that this is not your PCA account, nor is it the registration service that Tech has historically used. It is the same service that AutoX and the Challenge has used. Chesapeake PCA is migrating to a single registration source for all events in order to make registration simpler for our members. If you have any questions contact the Tech Chairs, Randy Richter and Jim Earlbeck, at tech@pcachs.org.

Topic The new Porsche Taycan is the first electric car since Ferdinand Porsche designed and built the model P1 for Lohner in 1898. The Taycan is a game changer on many levels as it was designed to perform like a Porsche and not an economy car. The P1 had six forward gears, two reversing gears and another four gears for braking, but the Taycan is just bit faster, stops shorter, corners better and maybe, just maybe has a few more computers controlling it than the P1. Join us to learn: •

What makes the Taycan go? Why it has a two-speed transmission while its competitors only use a single speed? Why it is so quick and yet can hammer out incredible track times lap after lap?

Why it charges so quickly? Why it has a 800 volt infrastructure, how it will charge in your driveway since you probably do not have 800 volt service and what Porsches plans are to establish a network of charging stations throughout the US?

What it will be like to live with? What is the maintenance schedule? How often will you change the oil, air cleaner and radiator fluid?

What will life be like with Porsche Connect? This new system will be incorporated into future cars- both EV and internal combustion. It will watch over your car and let you and the dealer know what needs to be done to keep your car in proper operating condition. It will even let you turn on the Taycan’s heater, via your smart phone, before you go out for that midnight winter pizza run.

Tech Event Special (cont’d) WHAT #2: TECH Event at At Speed Porsche Services on the state of the investment grade Porsche market WHEN: Leap Day! Saturday, February 29th 2020 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM WHERE: At Speed Porsche Services, 7389 Washington Blvd, Suite 103, Elkridge, MD 21075, 410-395-4025

Registration—link Register each driver and guest on MotorsporReg.com www.motorsportreg.com Note that this is not your PCA account, nor is it the registration service that Tech has historically used. It is the same service that AutoX and the Challenge have used. Chesapeake PCA is migrating to a single registration source for all events in order to make registration simpler for our members. If you have any questions contact the Tech Chairs, Randy Richter and Jim Earlbeck, at tech@pcachs.org.

Topic Bob Miller founded, operated and sold At Speed, a race car and general maintenance facility. It later closed under its new ownership. While At Speed was in business Chesapeake enjoyed many DIY Tech events at their facility. After selling At Speed, Bob spent his time buying, selling and sourcing investment grade Porsches. Bob Miller has now decided to open a new version of At Speed with an exclusive focus on Porsche products. The main emphasis will be sourcing and servicing collectable and race cars. Some general repair services will also be offered. Over that past ten years the Porsche market has enjoyed an incredible upward run of value. Recently it has gone through an adjustment. Join us to learn where the market is today- what is hot and what is not, and what the future may look like. Also learn why Bob has re-entered the service market and what At Speed will offer to our community. See Bob’s accompanying article in the February Patter for more details and his thoughts on the market. Chesapeake will be doing their famous Tech Event raffle for a $250 gift certificate at both events. At Speed, for the first time ever by a vendor, has offered to enrich the gift certificate by donating their money and taking the value of their gift certificate to $400! The gift certificate is redeemable for services only from the hosting vendor. The gift certificate is our Club’s way of thanking the vendor for hosting the event. As a reminder, Tech will be charging a modest fee for these and all future events. This is not an attempt to turn these events into a profit center; however, there is a need to recoup the money that is spent for the $250 gift certificate that is given away at a hosting vendor’s facilities and the coffee and donuts that are typically provided at the venues.

President's Message

Vincent Rock

Greetings Chesapeake Region! This past month we had our After-Holiday Party at Turf Valley as organized by Donna Brandt and Minta Miller. Bob Gutjahr and Manny Alban were our moderators and provided comedic relief for the hotly contested white elephant gift exchange again this year. There were a lot of fantastic gifts out for play this year, notably the Autobahn No Limit metal sign, metal Porsche Crests, and blanket. Thank you to everyone who participated this year and we look forward to seeing everyone next year. The After-Holiday part the incoming 2020 Executive Board was introduced, the autocross participants who placed in their classes were recognized and received trophies, and the winner of the Chesapeake Region Enthusiast of the Year was awarded. For 2019 the Chesapeake Region Enthusiast of the Year was award to Donna Brandt! Donna does so much for the Region, and we are truly fortunate to have he involved with the Region. She is an avid autocrosser and all-around party planner. Our events wouldn’t be the same without her and from everyone on the board and region, thank you! Coming up on February 8th we have a Tech Event at our sponsor, Porsche of Towson to go over the brand new all-electric Porsche Taycan. This is an event you will not want to miss. The following Saturday the 15 th is the annual Super Slot Car Night at Perry Hall Family Y Center. Bring a pot of chili, side or desert and come out to enjoy a night of slot car racing and trophies for the winners. January 15th was the first board meeting of 2020. Thank you to all the first-timers who attended and we hope you can make it to our next board meeting on March 18th at PCA National Headquarters in Columbia. We encourage everyone in the region come out and attend if you are free, whether you are interested in volunteering for a committee position, or just want to see what goes on, we would love to have you. An eblast will go out to register so we can get an accurate headcount closer to the meeting date, so be on the lookout. At our first meeting we have decided to make a move to MotorSportReg for future events. We’ve heard your comments and dissatisfaction with having to use three different sites to register for events, and moving to MotorSportReg will allow you to get all registered and settled with one easy to use site. If you ever have any questions, comments, or ideas for events, please feel free to email me at President@PCACHS.org or the Executive Board as a whole at Executive@PCACHS.org. We look forward to seeing you at our next event! Vincent

Bring A Trailer

James B. Beavan III

Bring A Trailer, also known as BAT is a website that runs auto auctions in a much different way than say eBay. https:// bringatrailer.com/ So, what makes Bring A Trailer (BAT) so different from other online car buying and selling services? BAT screen’s every vehicle prior to listing and works personally with the seller to make sure the listing is accurate and reasonable. BAT doesn’t allow you to list just any normal vehicle. Typically, exotic or rare cars need to be more than 10 years old and SUV/Trucks more than 20, but there are always exceptions for special items. BAT does typically run a few motorcycle auctions a day and on rare occasion you might even see a tractor, boat or motorhome auction. Of all the vehicles listed on BAT, about 15% of them tend to be Porsche’s with more than half of those being some variation of the 911. You might be surprised to see what happens when a Cayenne GTS with manual transmission gets listed, these tend to sell for more than double the Kelly Blue Book Value. There are 2 types of auction a reserve and a no reserve. A reserve auction is set to a certain amount that is unknown to buyers, at auction end the reserve was either met and the car will sell or the reserve was not met and the high bidder may negotiate a sale with the seller if desired. With a no reserve auction the seller is taking the chance of a low sale price, but also that knowing that the car will sell will draw in more interested bidders. The more bidders the better as this can sometimes lead to bidding wars driving the car above it’s expected selling price. BAT auctions last 7 days always ending on a weekday (M-F) between 2-6pm EST to allow maximum exposure and opportunity for seller and buyer to get the best deal and not miss out on a car. The great majority of vehicles on BAT are located in the USA, but it’s not unusual to see Canadian cars or foreign buyers. You cannot get outbid on BAT like eBay as the clock resets to 2-minutes every time there is a new bid at auction close, often auctions will continue for 10-20 minutes after the set close time as people continue to incrementally bid $250. Some buyers will come in strong with a bid several thousand higher than the current bid to scare off others and prevent a bidding war.

14

Chesapeake Region

Bring A Trailer (cont’d) Every auction listing includes a description of the most important vehicle facts plus information on any modifications and maintenance history. Most auctions include at least 50 photos, but some have over 200 photos which may include Carfax, paint readings, repair orders & receipts. While it’s not unusual for cars to be seen in person, most buyers will not personally see the car until after the auction. So, the more information in the listing the better. Less than 50% of auctions include a video, which may be just a walk around of the vehicle, a cold start showing the exhaust or a driving video… it’s nice to know just how sweet a 928 V8 sounds with aftermarket exhaust before you buy it. One of the most important features of BAT that adds tremendously to buyer confidence is the comments section. At the bottom of every auction anyone can post a question, concern or comment about the car being auctioned. Sellers are able to communicate publicly to address these questions and concerns so that buyers better understand the condition/maintenance/features of a particular vehicle. The comments section also allows for interaction between other members some of whom are experts on a particular model to chime in with advice, concerns or compliments. A responsive and courteous seller goes a long way in helping the sale end positively. An unusual feature about BAT is the fee structure. Sellers pay a $99 listing fee, but buyers pay 5% of the selling price with a minimum of $250 and maximum of $5000. As a buyer you should always consider the fee plus shipping and maintenance cost in your maximum bid. If there is a particular model car you are looking to buy or sell you can look it up on BAT. BAT has several years of auction history saved on its website; you might be surprised that a 1981 924 Carrera GT didn’t meet reserve at $65K 3 years ago. You can also subscribe to a particular model so that each time a new one is listed you receive an email notification. The Patter does not endorse Bring A Trailer, but always wants to share information that our members may enjoy and find useful. Do you have a buying/selling story you would like to share in the Patter, please send us an email editor@pcachs.org

So, You Want to Drive on the Track! Ellen Beck The desire to drive your Porsche as it was intended, with joyous abandon, “liebe zu ihm” (for the love of it) - dicing and slicing corners at speed, the wind in your hair, and all that… doesn’t really cut it on the public roads of Maryland, sadly enough. BUT, you can experience this amazing dream, and the rush of driving better, faster and more safely than you ever could before, by participating in a PCA Drivers’ Education event.

can take your car out at moderate highway speeds to enjoy a “Taste of the Track”.

Most PCA regions require some kind of experience with high performance driving prior to your first DE event. This ensures that participants have some familiarity with this type of driving activity, and car control in their own vehicle. A few Autocrosses would be a great idea to get some background experience, and will fit this requirement. Held on racetracks all over the US and Canada, PCA regions Chesapeake offers an excellent Autocross series, with inprovide an organized educational on-track experience struction from experienced region autocross instructors. called Drivers Education, or DE. Entrants bring their own Autocrossing allows you to “feel” and learn your car’s hanvehicles (primarily Porsches, but other marques are often dling characteristics (at speeds which will not get you into accepted), and spend one or more days participating in trouble), and learn to “look and think ahead” as you are classroom sessions on safety rules, vehicle dynamics, driv- driving – skills you will need on the track. There are many benefits to participating in DE first track day. HPDC’s are also a great way to learn to conevents, but one of the best parts is learning from the cadre trol your own vehicle in varied situations (braking, avoidof experienced volunteer PCA member/instructors, who go ance, etc), through a series of exercises and on track practhrough lengthy training and practice to give back to the tice, with an instructor with you at all times. Many of Summit Point, WV is the location of the closest track to them instruct for Potomac, since we are close geographmost Chesapeake members. Although Chesapeake does ically, and also go to Watkins Glen, Pitt Race, VIR, Mid Ohio not host our own DE events, various PCA regions hold and so on. Many members also drive with and/or instruct events there several times per month from March to Nofor other regions such as Riesentoter, Northern New Jervember, which are open to all PCA members. How to get started

16

Chesapeake Region

So, You Want to Drive… (cont’d) What you need to know

Costs

Safety first. DE events require you to wear a helmet, but before you purchase one, clubs often have loaners or rentals to try before you buy. The fit of a helmet is important for comfort, concentration and safety. You must also get a Tech Inspection done on your car, usually within a few weeks prior to the event date. There are a number of shops who offer this service, and usually opportunities to get it done for free at a club tech day. I am including a sample form in the links below. Ensuring that your brakes, tires and fluids are in top shape makes the day safer for you and others. While high performance driving is an individual sport, DE’s are a group activity, so everyone needs to be able to count on the others to be well prepared and as safe as possible. Everyone wants to drive home with their car in the same excellent condition as it arrived at the track!

DEs can quickly turn expensive. Most 2-day PCA events cost a minimum of $300 for registration. Add gas, oil, tech inspection, maintenance, wear on brake pads and tires over time, etc., add the helmet, then the hotel room and meals out, and it becomes non-trivial. However, events often sell out and have waiting lists, so it must be worth it! And it is. For comparison, the price for Friday at the Track (FATT) is $290 for one day. BMWCCA charges close to $500 for a weekend. Luckily, you can get some practice in your car by Autocrossing first, for a fraction of the price!

What you need to do Besides having a helmet, a novice driver does not need to do anything to their Porsche besides basic maintenance (per the Tech Inspection Form). You do not need special brake pads, a harness, a Hans device, sticky tires, improved suspension or anything fancy or expensive to get started. Modern Porsches are built for performance driving, and at the novice and beginner levels, you will definitely not be able to overdrive your Porsche. Your instructor, and all the management systems (sometimes called “nannies”) will do their thing to keep you on the pavement and going in the right direction. J Your classroom sessions will teach you what you need to know, and your instructor will guide you through the day. DE is called Drivers Education (not racing) because the goal is for you to learn how to safely drive your Porsche at speed, in a controlled manner, and within your comfort zone (ok, maybe just a little beyond it!). This will make you a better driver on the streets every single day, and if after a while you find yourself addicted, take your money and put it into driving more track days. Your best investment is in yourself, improving your driving skills through “seat time” - now onto the cost for all this fun.

PCA DEs offer an excellent value for a safe, fun weekend where you really learn a LOT about driving. Summit Point is close enough that some members can drive from home each day. A novice can bring their daily driver and with simple preparation can have a huge amount of fun, plus meet great people and go home smiling so much your cheeks hurt! Invest in seat time, go to as many events as you can, get experience in all conditions, and learn from all your instructors. Resist “improving your car” and learn how to be an accurate, consistent and smooth driver first. It will pay dividends, and you will soon be moving up the run groups. The following are links that will help you get started. There is a lot of material to digest, so grab a cup of coffee and get started learning! Also, at your next CHS event, ask around for those of us who drive on the track, and ask questions. As we instructors say, there are no dumb questions. If you don’t understand, just ask. Everybody wants to be safe out there, and have fun! I recommend starting on the Potomac website, where they have very thoroughly documented all aspects of their program, and covered much more than I can in this short article. Be sure to visit the FAQ page which will answer all your questions and more.

PCACHS Board Meeting Update James B. Beavan III The first regional boarding of 2020 was held on January 15 th at PCA Headquarters in Columbia. Around 6pm most of the 19 attendees arrived and enjoyed a Mission BBQ dinner. At 6:30pm new regional President Vincent Rock brought the meeting to order. Among the first topics was to warn members about potential email fraud and phishing scams that we may receive from masked email addresses pretending to be official. The Region should never be asking members to purchase gift cards or make payments to vendors on its behalf. The next topic of discussion was the desire to move the club from multiple registration sites to a single platform. We currently use Club Registration for most club activities and Motorsport Registration for autocross. The goal is to move to Motorsportreg.com exclusively as the platform has better payment tracking and it would be ideal to use only one registration platform for all club activities. We also discussed how the club logo should be used or not used. Essentially, as a tax-exempt entity, we don’t want outside vendors to profit off our logo or club members to think we are endorsing a certain product or shop that uses our logo in their advertising. We do allow sponsors to use the logo for promoting club events. New Treasurer Tom Morton briefly reviewed the club’s financials and tax return that was approved to be submitted to the IRS. New VP Aaron Miller discussed our pending calendar of events for 2020 and how deep and various it is. Compared to other regions Chesapeake offers one of the largest numbers of club events each year. With such a large number of events there is potential for overlap. This leads us to autocross chair Greg Hartke who has the difficult task of working many areas to try and give us a great autocross season that doesn’t cross over with other events. Greg said one issue is the lack of autocross instructors in our region, requiring him to work with the Potomac region to help out with instructors. While our region doesn’t host any DE (Driver’s Education) events, those events not only affect autocross instructors but also autocross participation. Add in the Bowie Baysox game scheduling leaves a tight window of opportunity. Chesapeake is also realigning its car classes to align with those in Potomac for more consistent scoring and competition. New PCA member Stacy Talmadge has volunteered to help Minta with the 2020 Chesapeake Challenge. Veteran club members Ronald Farb and Anna Alban have also offered to help Donna Brandt in planning the 2021 After Holiday party. Our club continues to grow every year as does the responsibility of the volunteers. There are always opportunities to get involved and make new friends in the club. In April there will be a volunteer appreciation dinner. We have determined that our club’s social media needs to be proactive, so look for additional updates on Facebook and Instagram starting in February. The next Chesapeake Region Board Meeting will be on March 18 th at 6pm again at PCA Headquarters in Columbia, and all club members are welcome to attend.

At Speed Porsche Services Bob Miller

At Speed Porsche Services…why are you doing it again? “The sky is falling…the sky is falling!!!” Everyone is looking around, friends, colleagues, shops, you name it… “The sky is falling” they tell me! Porsche prices are dropping like a rock, they tell me… But, are they REALLY…? As a car collector, ex-racer, lover of driving machines (especially Porsches), I look around and I see that things have definitely changed. But I can, without any hesitation, say that the sky is NOT falling…Ok, Mr. Smarty…what IS happening, then. Well, let’s recap what we’ve seen the past several years and that will, I believe, bring us all to the same relative conclusion. “The Porsche market is RED HOT and rose nearly 20%”. “New auction results are the best in history”. “The 73RS market is beyond compare”. These were all phrases heard for the years starting in 2012 through approximately early 2017. So, for five full years, there were new highs, new upper limits pushed, more and more sales, and everyone was wonderfully happy. In fact, those were the days when you could buy almost ANY Porsche and do well with it. Think about that… You didn’t need to be selective. You didn’t need to know which Porsche was desirable and which were not. You didn’t even really need to evaluate your purchase in terms of condition, legitimacy, options, etc. You really didn’t need to know much of ANYTHING. All it had to say was…”Porsche” and you were guaranteed some level of success and a positive return on your investment. Is that logical or just ridiculous? Those Porsche cars that we drove, loved, raced, entered in concours events, rallied, etc. had become one of THE hottest investments on the planet. In fact, soon there were folks who weren’t even selling the actual cars and were making money!! They were selling their SLOT TO OWN a car for hundreds of thousands of dollars just for the incredible honor of actually BUYING one of these cars! But, ultimately, who cared, because the person who finally got the car could then resell it later and still make money!!! Sound silly to anyone yet…? Well, it goes further… Remember all those incredible auction results I spoke of? Well, of course, over all those years you can bet that THE best cars in the world were crossing the auction lines to set all those stellar level records… right?? WRONG! In fact, as an avid auction attendee/follower, I can tell you beyond absolute certainty that over the past several years, most of what has crossed the blocks has been more junk than not. Re-stamped engine cases, very poorly and incorrectly restored units, crashed cars that had been poorly fixed, “low mile” cars that show absolute evidence of being higher mileage, etc. But remember, all you needed to know was that it said: “Porsche”… The perfect storm continued with several anomalous occurrences: Jerry Seinfeld; the stock market; the change in currency exchanges, etc. Jerry Seinfeld is a huge Porsche-file, we all know that. But when he decided to sell much of his collection at what could arguably be considered near the highpoint of the market, it exacerbated all of the issues I’ve previously noted. His cars brought HUGE premiums over what was the market pricing because…well…really who knows. Because it was “Jerry’s” car?? Within minutes of the hammer hitting, every single person having a car even remotely similar to Seinfeld decided their cars were worth exactly the same as his. Even though they didn’t have a private caretaker for their cars; even though theirs was not in the same condition as his; even though theirs was not the last of that particular model; and so on. But who cared…all it had to say was: Porsche. As far as the stock market, there is generally an inverse relationship between the success of the market and pricing of collector cars – strange as it may seem. Thus, from 2012 to 2017, there was nowhere near the rise in the market compared with the escalation of Porsche pricing. Thus, since these cars had become an investment, why put your money in the market??? Especially if you didn’t really need to know anything to do well. Who would? Finally, at its height, the Euro was above $1.60 and the Pound was near the same, and thus, the Europeans were purchasing our Porsches on absolute blue light sale pricing! They literally could not get enough of those “original California cars” and there were ships loaded with some of the best the U.S. had to offer heading right back to the Fatherland. Ok…so what the heck happened? Why are things changing?? Well, similar to the “real estate bubble”, there came a time when the unlimited buying frenzy started to dry up. Purchasers started the long-awaited process of being increasingly more selective, and the folks who really didn’t know a darned thing about the cars they were selling started to see that there were questions being asked that they couldn’t answer… “Why does that stamping look different?”. “Why does my paint meter show 300 mil?” “Why is that silver plated…my friend’s isn’t…it’s cad plated?”

At Speed Porsche Services (cont’d) “What is that ripple in that fender?” Then, Porsche got smart… They started to introduce cars that were “limited editions” or “limited production”…but then they built as many as they could. The best example of that was the 991.1 GT3RS. Initially, the production was to be “limited” to 1,000 units worldwide. Relatively rare by anyone’s standards. But, in the end, Porsche produced over 4,200 units of that car!!! 4 times what it had promised…because demand was so high they said “why not”. By Ford standards, 4,200 is still really rare…but NOT by Porsche standards! So…the market started to drop. I’ll tell you a story that exemplifies the situation. Over the past several years, because of my love for the early long hood cars (69-73), I’ve taken it upon myself to learn the 73 Carrera RS like no other car. In fact, I’ve personally evaluated over 45 of the original 1,580 RS’s worldwide…which is about 3% of the total production of cars. So every once in a while, someone has me evaluate a car for them as a pre-buy service. Recently, I went to a very famous person’s collection and evaluated a 73RS which was for sale. Now remember, this is someone who can pay for ANY car he/she wants and should be “well connected”. In fact, it was humbling to even meet with this person. So, on with the story. The RS was for sale north of $700,000 and was a “restored and original” car. No problem. Let’s see what we’ve got… So: the engine was re-stamped with incorrect case halves from a 73E/S and a faked engine type stamping, the transmission was the wrong unit, the front VIN plate was a fake, the front fenders were not thin steel units, the door skins were not thin steel, the hood was not thin steel, the rear quarters had been replaced with SC flares, the carpet was the wrong weave, the dash was incorrect, the headliner was a later unit, not a single plastic lens was correct for the car….Uuuuuugggghhhh!!! Literally, there was little to NOTHING there that was a 73RS! And this was a car that was for sale to the market for over $700,000 from someone who was told by their “guy” that it was one of the best out there! Now…what’s that car worth??? When it sells for sub $300,000, does that REALLY mean that the 73 Carrera RS market is tanking??? Really??? Ok, Bob, so you exited the market and sold your business in 2012…why come back in now? As many of you know, I owned At Speed Motorsports back in the day. When I sold it to pursue other challenges, I thought I had put the Company and staff with a great custodian. Also, it seemed like the right thing for the family and me at the time as I had enjoyed creating and building the company with my partners. Unfortunately, At Speed disappeared in less than 3 years…much to my dismay. So why are you coming back? Frankly, because it seems there is a vacuum in the Porsche business, both locally and nationally, for folks who actually love and know about these cars well enough to take care of customer collections and help to guide them through the landmines that exist these days. What do I sell in my collection? What do I hold onto? What do I buy for the future? Why?? Should I do this to my car or leave it alone? What’s my car really worth?? Plus, is this really how my car should run? Should it handle like this?? So, my lead tech/partner, Rich Siegman, and I are teaming up again to provide exactly these answers and assistance. We will give you honest, informed information on your car and your collection. What should you buy if you are looking for a strong long-term return? Why? What other opportunities exist in the market today and potentially for the future? We can set up the car, from a handling/mechanical standpoint so it does exactly what Porsche intended. And, if you’re like me and are running out of room…we’ll store and take care of your car as well. I will be presenting my thoughts on the Porsche collector market at the Leap Year Special Tech Event on Saturday February 29, 2020. If you can't make that event, come see us, anytime, just to talk Porsche. I love that! And no…the sky is NOT falling!!! The GP Ice Race is the Winter Driving Event of Your Dreams

GP Ice Race - Skijoring one-legged behind a 911 GT3 RS (Source: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ovGtKrBeZik )

If you’re wondering what the GP Ice Race is all about, the video linked above should give you a taste. It’s one of the few automotive events in the world where you’ll see a one-legged man Skijoring while being pulled by a 991 GT3 RS. During the weekend-long event, the world’s most talented drivers and well known collectors descend upon the small town of Zell am See in the Austrian Alps to drive some of the most valuable collector cars on earth as they were intended — or rather not at all as intended, because the event takes place on a bed of ice. Hosted by Greger Porsche Classic Cars, last year’s event was the first time the Ice Race was held in over 40 years, and based on what we’ve seen so far, the second year of the revitalized event looks to be just as epic. From classic machinery like the 550 Spyder to latest-and-greatest Formula E car, the GP Ice Race is guaranteed to wet the appetite of every type of petrol-head. This year’s GP Ice Race took place on the weekend of February 1st, so by the time you’re reading this it’s already too late to attend. But worry not, you have 12 months to plan your trip to Zell Am See in 2021...what are you waiting for?! GP Ice Race Official Site: https://www.gpicerace.com/

The Lighter Side (cont’d) Porsche 992 Jacky Ickx Edition

Ickx edition article (Source: AutomobileMag.com)

The first special edition 992 has been announced: the Jacky Ickx Edition, named after the 6-time Le Mans winning racing driver from Belgium. So what’s new? Mechanically it’s no different from your standard 4S, but aesthetically it takes the 992 up a notch. It comes decked out in a new shade of PTS paint created specifically for this car, ‘X Blue’, specially painted wheels to match, and has a revised front bumper with more aggressive air intakes. All of those changes make it a compelling proposition, but before you reach for your checkbook, all 75 of these will be sold exclusively in Belgium. Nevertheless don’t despair, you can always relocate!

Autocross 2020

Greg Hartke

Tell you what: Scheduling Autocross (AX) events for 2020 is driving me ‘round the bend! (As if I had far to go… ;)) I had everything set (and I was unexpectedly happy about it) with an accepted schedule for our events at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie (PGS) and I even had invoices in hand for the lot rental, when suddenly one of the dates was pulled. Arrgh! Unfortunately, trying to find a workable replacement is proving to be very difficult. Not to worry, though. We’ll get there, but it means the full schedule is not yet finalized, as I had hoped. Soon, though! I will, however, take this opportunity to tell everyone their facilities. The students will then make the short that the date for the 2020 Chesapeake Autocross drive to PGS, where in the morning they will rotate th School has been set: Saturday April 18 . Mark your through three instructor-led exercises: a figure-8 dual skid pad, an up-and-back dual slalom, and a small section of an AX course where the students will put together all the driving elements. The focus will be on driving. During the provided lunch, Brad and I will join the three exercise elements to form a full AX course and a real AX race will be held as the students will proceed with instructors for timed racing around the course. Last year, the students got 6 runs, so they had plenty of seat time on a fun course and that’s the cercalendars! The students at the school last year had a tainly the name of the game. All cars are welcome: great time (lots of fist pumping!) and by all accounts 911’s, Boxster’s, 924’s, Caymans, 968’s, Panamera’s, had a great learning experience. Keep in mind that 914’s, Cayenne’s, 356’s, Macan’s, etc. You can even the school isn’t simply for those with no AX experibring your non-P-car. We won’t tell anyone! ence. Experienced AXers are also welcome to come out for a refresher and get lots of practice (with an instructor) at exercises tailored specifically to the skills needed for AX racing. The day will begin at Porsche of Annapolis (where a continental breakfast will be provided). AX Co-chair Brad Martinez will provide a short period of classroom instruction and the good folks (and our sponsor) at Porsche of Annapolis will provide a tour of

I’ve said this before: If you’ve ever had an itch to see what your car (any car!) can do when pushed to its handling limits, AX is a wonderful opportunity to do so safely. The AX School provides students with a golden opportunity to learn how to execute and practice important elements of their racing skills before actually trying those skills on a full course. Whether or not you actually decide to take up AX on a regular basis is immaterial. The AX School is still a wonderful learning opportunity and can open your eyes to a whole new world of excitement. The schedule and live Registration are not yet up on Motorsportreg.com, but they will be as soon as I can finalize the schedule. We’ll let you know when it’s ready, so stay tuned. We’ll be racing before you know it and I’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone again when the new season begins. In the meantime, stay warm! Greg Hartke PCACHS AX Co-chair

Public Service Announcements Maryland Real ID—New Drivers License Requirements If you haven’t already visited the MVA to secure a Real ID, the clock is running to meet a federal law. “Please plan ahead,” said MVA administrator, Chrissy Nizer. “The deadline is October 2020 but we don’t want our customers to wait ’till then.” By 2020, older Maryland licenses will no longer exist. The new ones will look different but even if you have one now it won’t be a Real ID until conditions are met. “What that is, is four documents that you need to bring to your local MDOT MVA branch office,” said Nizer. “Those are proof of age and identity.”

Meaning that, along with either a birth certificate or passport, you must also bring a social security card, a driver’s license, and proof of Maryland Residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/index.htm

**AVOID I-895** MAJOR ROADWORK ON I-895 IN BALTIMORE The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) warned motorists today to avoid I-895 and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel due to major construction and traffic impacts beginning this month. Two-way traffic will operate on I-895 for two years starting Nov. 27. Motorists should use I-695/Key Bridge and I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as alternate routes. The work is part of the MDTA’s $189 million I-895 Bridge Project, announced on Dec. 21, 2017, to replace the 60-year-old bridge north of the Harbor Tunnel. “To avoid sitting in traffic, motorists should plan on using I-695 or I-95 as alternate routes,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn. On Nov. 27, northbound I-895 will close completely for one year from the north side of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to the Boston/O’Donnell Street exit ramp (Exit 11).

• • • •

Two-way traffic – one lane in each direction – will operate on southbound I-895. The I-895/Holabird Avenue exit ramp (Exit 10) will close completely during this time. Additionally, the northbound bore of the Harbor Tunnel will close 24/7 for 60 days in spring 2019 with twoway traffic operating in the southbound bore. Northbound I-895 and the Holabird Avenue exit ramp will reopen to traffic in spring 2020.

PCA Juniors

What is the PCA Juniors program? ✓ PCA Juniors is a program for Porsche enthusiasts under age 18. ✓ Participants must be registered by an active PCA member. ✓ It’s not just the cars… and now it’s not just the grown-ups! ✓ With our new PCA Juniors program, PCA is about the kids too!

The PCA Juniors program has been created so kids can enjoy PCA events, learn about Porsches and build the enthusiasm that runs through all of the Porsche Club of America.

Who is eligible? Any child under age 18 who is registered by a current PCA member can participate in the program. (Note: This is not a PCA Membership.)

What will the child receive? PCA Juniors will receive a welcome package that includes an age-appropriate gift and PCA Juniors ID badge. We look forward to developing the program and its features over time.

What does it cost to register? It’s FREE! Participants must be registered by an active PCA member, and there is no cost to join!
