Presidents Message

Hey Chesapeake Region PCA

I can’t believe we are already into December and that 2022 is almost over. November went flying by. Of note this month, I attended the Catoctin Mountain Tour, the Chesapeake Board Meeting, the Volunteer/Sponsorship Party, and the Social Dinner at Facci’s. As always, everything was GREAT!

The Volunteer/Sponsorship Party was especially notable to me as it was the first one I have ever attended or helped plan for that matter. The Executive Council (EC) threw the party to thank all of the Board members, Committee leads, and Event leads for all their hard work this year. The lunch at Kelsey’s Pub was free to them and a guest. The lunch also served as our venue to award the Autocross Awards, present plaques honoring our “retired” Board members, and present the Chesapeake Enthusiast of the Year award. These items will no longer be done during the After Holiday Party to help save time in that event.

I know I’m biased but I think the party went GREAT. We had 50 people attend including some Chesapeake members who don’t even hold positions but still paid to be a part of the fun. The food was outstanding and the comradery just as great. Lots of folks hung out after the presentations just to socialize and have a good time. Perhaps the highest honor I’ve had while being President this year was awarding of the LYNN ECKELS MEMORIAL/ Chesapeake Enthusiast of the Year award at the party. This award was voted on by the EC and to quote Michael Murphy, it is awarded “to the person who best represented the Region’s spirit and level of energy”. It’s not a “thank you” award or “volunteer of the year” award but given to someone who lives and breathes PCA and all that it encompasses and makes all of Chesapeake better.

Drum roll please 2022’s Chesapeake Enthusiast of the Year award went to my good buddy James Beavan III. James is not only the Patter editor but he is our Facebook and Instagram presence. He is always posting photos on these sites along with timely content. The Patter continues to grow under his editorial leadership and he really kept it alive during the covid months with the Member Profiles that he started. Plus we all see James at many of our events including tours, autocross, tech sessions, social, board meetings etc. James truly is a Chesapeake enthusiast and so we should all congratulate and thank him!

Through The Rear View Mirror

Revised from the Porsche Patter, December 1984. Through The Rear View Mirror

I used to blink my lights at all Porsches during the '60's and '70's (356, 912, 911, 914, 912E, 924, 944, and 928)

Interestingly, Porsche, AG had the "blinker" wired into the steering wheel column ever since the TYP356 was first introduced in 1948 in Gmund, Austria.

Although no printed instructions were ever set out in the owner's manual, you just knew that those "lights" were there to say "HELLO" whenever an oncoming Porsche came into view.

The wave of the hand was always optional. Afterall, it was a special greeting among two Porsches that was important and not necessarily between the drivers.

When I first started using the 'lights," it gave me goose bumps. Afterall there were much fewer Porsches on the roads back then...and when you saw one it was an exciting moment!

I know that newer Porsche owners have really missed something special because most Porsche salespersons never told them about the old Porsche tradition of "blinking the lights."

While traditions are nice, I do recognize that it has its place and isn't necessarily important. Of course, the Porsche Factory continues to feature the "blinker" on the turn signal stalk and all you have to do is pull it toward you to activate the high beams.

12

If you have never tried it Go Ahead...it's kinda neat to let your Porsche say "HELLO" to its sibling or cousin...no matter which model of Porsche!

"Blink, Blink!"

BMW guy for 20 years, bought my wife 2018 Macan S, fell in love with the brand. Needed to replace my 2008 140k miles E60 M5. Built a 2109 911 991.2 GTS. Rear wheel, 7 speed manual, biggest engine without going to iGTS or turbo model. Put 20K miles 1st 2 years, then Covid hit. Car has seen plenty of track time, as well, 2nd set of full winters and have been out in the snow, more than once. Like the Porsche’s so much, bought a 1986 952 TURBO December 2021 and been restoring since & driving since. Absolutely love the brand, not happy that I wasted all those years & 5 BMW’s, although V10 M5 always brought a smile

Tech: Chavis Performance & Engineering

On a cool November morning the techies of the Chesapeake Region gathered at Chavis Performance Engineering for a tech event that some might consider heretical, while others basked in the glory of their hot rodding roots. While some may be displeased, Randy Richter, aka Moose, opened the session by pointing out in the early 70s, when he lived in SoCal, you could buy a 356 with a blown engine for a couple of hundred dollars. You could then drop a VW engine in the 356 and have a running vehicle for another hundred dollars or so.

18
Tyler Chavis, the progenitor of Chavis Performance Engineering, welcomed us warmly to his very neat and compact shop. Chavis Performance Engineering has evolved into the country’s premier integrated installer of Chevrolet small block V8 engines into Porsches.

Chavis (cont

Tyler provided the backstory of how he happened to get started. He stated that he had an engine failure in his 911 and had it rebuilt only to fail again a short time later. Following another rebuild, only a thousand miles elapsed after that engine rebuilt by a Porsche certified mechanic failed.

Tyler decided there had to be a better way and after some research decided to install a Chevrolet small block into his 911. By his own admission, his initial effort was somewhat lacking. However, it was good enough to attract an acquaintance that wanted to have Tyler install a V8 in his 911. Tyler readily admits that his $8,000 initial quote was a money losing proposition.

The really interesting part of the presentation showed how Tyler continued to solve problems and continuously improved the quality of his installation.

Tyler developed a custom adapter plate to adapt the Porsche transmission to the Chevy V8. He then moved on to working with SPEC to produce a custom single mass flywheel featuring a replaceable wear surface. Custom designed motor mounts and finally a new custom lower cross brace was all designed and produced out of billet aluminum. A specialized electric power steering pump was found

Chesapeake Region 19
’d)

Chavis (cont’d)

and sourced from England.

Tyler only uses top quality components and crate engines supplied by Blueprint Engines or GM Performance, some even featuring up to a two year, 36,000 mile warranty. The really trick part of all of Tyler’s efforts is the plug and play wiring harness and electronic adapters to allow totally seamless integration with the Porsche displays and electronics.

Chavis has answered the call for updated cars by providing subcontracted paint and body kit updates for a complete customer experience.

Interesting also, is that the corner weights are the same with the V8 as with the Porsche engine.

Chesapeake Region 20

Chavis (cont’d)

One would speculate however that center of gravity of the car may increase slightly due to the V8. So, what is the bottom line cost? To buy Tyler’s custom designed kit is about $13,000 (less engine of course). To have Chavis put in a new Engine and the other conversion parts is about $34,000.

As one of the attendees said near the end of the event. You can buy a roller 996 or 997 with a blown engine for $5,000 to $10,000. Add in Tyler’s conversion and where else are you going to get a 500HP 911 with all that torque for $45,000?

Many thanks to Tyler for spending his time with PCA Chesapeake enthusiasts for the entire morning!

Following the event at Chavis, the Tech team ventured into unknown territory by organizing a social lunch after the CPE event at the Black Forest Taphouse in Fallston MD. Of course, we did ask permission from the fabulous Social team of Steve and Marsha Buss before we proceeded, to ensure we were on the right track.

We were pleased to find we had a separate dining area where talk of Porsches and catching up socially was the order of the day. Of course, we cannot fail to mention the excellent service and delicious food and drink that we all enjoyed.

Chesapeake Region 21

Chavis/Black Forest Taphouse (cont’d)

There was a German pretzel that was ordered that had to be the largest pretzel Randy had ever seen. The beers on tap were of course a wide variety of top flite German offerings.

An insightful tech event followed by a joyous social gathering was quite the enjoyable way to spend the early part of a Saturday to kick off the weekend. Thanks to one and all that attended or perused this article.

Unfortunately, not due to present occupation requiring me to spend many months at sea etc. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: To meet quality, like minded people and to enjoy the many interesting events offered by the club When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): I was born in Nurnberg Germany in 1961 and I was adopted along with my identical twin brother, and I think I have the autobahn DNA in my blood I can’t drive anything slow! times. And due to my aggressive driving style, the PDK fits me perfectly – the PDK is more enjoyable to drive in everyday traffic. I like to concentrate on driving instead of worrying about shifting I get it and its cool but it’s not for me now.

What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: I love the wide variety of venues the Porsche Club offers to sample various cuisine and fine dining along with the scenic drives. The car shows are fun to interact with fellow owners, to show our cars to the general public and to inspire the next generation of Porsche Owners

What is your favorite PCA memory:

Due to my occupation, I have not had the chance to attend one yet looks hopeful in 2023. What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: It’s an excellent club to interact with fellow members that have much knowledge to offer. The Porsche Patter also has very useful advertisements of various businesses that offer valuable services to the Porsche owner

If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: 918 Spyder Rare, beautiful and a chance to own an example of advanced German Engineering such a splendid achievement! They just seem to outdo themselves every year which is very exciting!

The Taycan Turbo S and the GT3 RS would be another choice to add to my stable. Porsche once gave me a Macan for a loaner, and I truly enjoyed driving that SUV great for an everyday driver. I would indeed have a collection of Porsches not just one.

Anything additional you would like to share about yourself (Family/Work/Etc):

on the highway, I heard a whine it turned out to be a late 80`s Blk/Blk Porsche 911 Turbo flying by us that awesome moment inspired me just like many others and I was hooked for life! I do want an air cooled 911 Turbo - they are so Iconic! Please let me hit the Powerball!!! I should have been a race car driver, but we did not have iPhones or computers in 1980`s so I did not know at the time how to pursue this path in life. But I was offered the opportunity to join the Merchant Marine. Yet, when I am home on vacation from sailing around the world, I love to drive but I really love spirited driving, yet I consider myself a professional, competent, intelligent driver on the streets. I will not reveal what the fastest speed I been up to on I 95 (grin ). The 2012 Turbo S that I presently own represents my driving style and my German heritage though I would love to have a 2023 911 GT3 RS. I drive all my vehicles including my high performance built 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 like I am on the track I simply can’t stand slow drivers which can be termed as “road Hogs”. I tend to drive my Porsche mostly when traffic is light, and I feel like a rock star when going for a cruise I love when other cars speed up behind me or to my passenger side to get a good view of the classic styling people just don’t see them too much on the road where I live and I can tell many high end owners of other makes are envious. I love the effortless power the Turbo S offers. The 2012 911 Turbo S is the last year that incorporates the true Dr. Ferdinand Porsche DNA before Volkswagen purchased the company. My driving style is what Dr. Porsche envisioned when designing his vehicles and I am just trying to meet his expectations I hope he approves :)

The Road Trip to Treffen Bend

Treffen’s are one of our most enjoyable experiences with PCA. Marsha and I live in Maryland and are members of the Chesapeake Region. For the Colorado Springs Treffen at the Broadmoor in late April, we rented a Macan GTS and drove through the Rockies for three weeks. We had a terrific experience. For Treffen Bend we discussed purchasing a Porsche out west and driving it home through as many National Parks as feasible. Once we successfully registered for the event, we began to seriously look for a 981 manual, as we own a 991.2 PDK Cabriolet. After a month of fun research we found our car at Porsche Freemont, CA.

So now we know our point of departure, the San Jose, CA area. We also know Treffen begins in Bend, OR on Wednesday September 14th and the Porsche Boardwalk Reunion in Ocean City, New Jersey begins on Friday October 14th. Our schedule parameters are set. Let the planning process begin.

With laptops and Rand McNally’s spread across the kitchen table, we set out to prepare the quintessential itinerary. Our original plan took us north on the 101 to Washington State. A spectacular drive. But after reviewing the southern route, it made the most sense and with the help of Google and Roadtrippers and our paper maps, we prepared our route to arrive in Bend on Tuesday September 13th. The northern route awaits another trip out west.

On August 29th, we arrived at Porsche Freemont, signed the paperwork and we were on our way. Wait, did we talk about the roomy front and back trunks of this car? All the stressing about packing was just a waste of time. We had plenty of space for our two carryon sized suitcases, a backpack, and 24” duffle bag.

Treffen (cont’d)

First stop, Yosemite National Park for two days. Wow, so beautiful, very majestic., but it was smoky due to the nearby wildfires and since there has been no rain in months, the waterfalls were reduced to dry granite rock.

We left for the magnificent mountains and scenic views of Mammoth Lake. It was here, in the underground parking garage of our hotel, where we first applied our paint protection film. Special thanks to Mike Holtzclaw, PCA Anchorage, Alaska for passing along his trade secrets and intellectual property to us. 3M Scotch Blue 2” and 3” rolls provide protection from the road debris and bugs.

We left Mammoth Lake saying we need to come back here one day.

On the way to North Las Vegas (the one without a Strip) we drove on a crazy winding road with very tight curves that sometimes you had to slow down to 10 miles an hour. We were on the Westgard Pass, Rt 168 in Inyo California. As we exited the car in Vegas, we felt the heat. It was hot and it stayed hot for another week. I’m talking 110+. So, we planned our longer hikes and adventures for the morning hours.

Chesapeake Region 39

Treffen (cont’d)

The next day we arrived at our second National Park on this trip and the first of the Mighty 5 in southern Utah, Zion NP. Vehicles were not allowed so we used the Park Shuttle free transportation to maneuver around the park. Hiking the Narrows or Angels Landing was beyond our ability, but we enjoyed our shorter hikes over lava formations and sandstone formations. And it was hot as Hades, so the hikes were kept short. We stayed in a lovely Airbnb where we had the opportunity to do laundry and cook our own dinners. It does grow old eating at restaurants! We also had the opportunity to do repair work on the PPF. Although that was cut short due to excessive heat and the need for a cold beer.

We left the Zion AirBnB and drove backroads uphill for a few hours to Bryce Canyon NP. We didn’t realize the Bryce reaches heights over 9,000 feet. And yes, it was still well over 105 degrees. Spectacular is the word for Bryce Canyon NP. The enormous Bryce Amphitheater filled with hoodoos of all shapes and sizes is an awe inspiring, incredible view. We hiked the rim trail from Sunrise Point to Sunset Point twice because it was such a gorgeous vista.

Chesapeake Region 40

Treffen (cont’d)

On Monday, we left Bryce and headed to Capitol Reef NP via State Road Scenic Byway 12, All-American Road. Wow, what a breathtaking drive! We arranged to stay at the Capitol Reef Resort, next to the park entrance. We were glamping next to the teepees! We parked next to a colorful 356 from Washington State. Capitol Reef NP has dramatic landscapes of bridges and arches, rugged cliffs and canyons along the Waterpocket Fold, which forms a reef the length of the park. In the most scenic sections of the park, white sandstone cliffs with brilliant white dome formations dot the landscape. Most of the roads are unpaved and the Cayman balked at driving down them, so we hiked a few. We wanted to hike the Hickman Bridge Trail, but we never found the trailhead. However, we found trails leading to the 1000 3000 year old petroglyphs. Good thing we had our binoculars. They were really cool. There is one road through the park, Scenic Byway 24 and it is aptly named because of the incredible views.

We left Torrey, Utah and Capitol Reef NP and continued east to Moab, Utah. We had an AirB&B for 4 nights to use as home base for Canyonlands and Arches. But first we stopped at Goblin Valley State Park in Green River, Utah to visit the goblins or hoodoos, thousands of hoodoos. It is not very large, only 3 square miles, but this State Park is filled with these goblins. Hiking trails let you walk among them. After an hour or so, it was off to Moab.

We checked into our AirB&B in the late afternoon on Wednesday. The place was very new, very modern and very nice. A beautiful pool with two hot tubs awaited. So did the grills for dinner. We welcomed the opportunity to cook our meals so we stopped in town to do grocery shopping.

Arches was the only National Park in the Mighty 5 that required a timed entry. Ours was Friday noon, so we entered Canyonlands on Thursday. We took scenic drives through the Island in the Sky district. Spectacular overviews. The eroded landscape that turned into magnificent canyons, mesas, and buttes were breathtaking. By mid afternoon, I thought I heard the pool calling us, so we headed back to the condo in Moab.

Chesapeake Region 41

Treffen (cont

We queued up at the Arches entrance just before noon. Fortunately, it was not very crowded. As we drove through, thousands of arches, and hoodoos and balanced rocks were impressive. The balanced rocks were so awesome. We didn’t hike the 3 mile round trip to the world famous Delicate Arch as the temps were pushing 105+. But we did hike to the Landscape Arch, the longest in the world at 290 feet. There were many other short distance hikes and we did a couple, but it was just too hot, so we drove the Arches Scenic Drive and stopped at various viewpoints along the way. These viewpoints have short hikes making it tolerable in the afternoon heat. By this time in the day, the crowds had thinned out and parking at these viewpoints was now available.

While in Moab, we visited the historic Dead Horse Point State Park. There are miles of hiking trails around the rim of this desert plateau and the views of the Colorado River Canyon and Canyonlands are phenomenal. As beautiful as the Grand Canyon.

As we wrap up the Mighty 5 in southern Utah, we reflected on the diversity and enormity of the landscapes from the canyons to the hoodoos to the arches and balanced rocks. This was an awesome travel experience.

We left Moab for Treffen in Bend, Oregon on Sunday morning in the rain. This is the first rain we had and we both wondered how the painter’s tape would hold up to the 80 MPH speed limit, well maybe there were times we went faster. The answer, surprisingly well. The tape will make it to Treffen, I concluded.

Salt Lake City was our next stop. Then Boise. On Tuesday, one day before the start of Treffen we rolled into Bend and checked in at the Sunriver Resort. And it is smoky again and definitely worse than Yosemite. The sun appeared as a big orange ball in the sky, which made for very colorful sunsets. After settling into our room, we started tackling the very dirty car. It was off with the tape, which is much easier than putting it on! Then a deep clean and shine. We both agreed to not tape the car during Treffen so we were ready to begin touring the gorgeous Oregon Cascades tomorrow.

Treffen (cont

Our first tour took us south to Crater Lake National Park, a stunning caldera lake. Fortunately, the smoke cleared the further south we drove, so we had a beautiful day. Our friends Patrick and Susan Nicola from Annapolis joined us on this day trip.

Our second tour took us along the McKenzie Pass and the Santiam Pass Scenic Byway in the Cascades. These were absolutely the best Pcar roads we traveled since the trip began.

Chesapeake Region 43

Treffen (cont’d)

Our third tour took us to Smith Rock State Park with its scenic views and deep river canyons. We were delighted to again have Patrick and Susan along for the drive. Smith Rock is home to some serious rock climbers. There are 14 different rock climbing areas and over 1800 climbing routes and it is one of the premier rock climbing destinations in America. This was a half day tour and we were back in Bend in time for lunch at a local favorite brew pub. There is no shortage of craft breweries in Bend. There are over 30 on the Ale Trail.

When we returned from the Saturday touring and lunch, we started the blue paint protection film application and prepped for the beginning of phase 2 of our cross country road trip. We finished the taping just in time to enjoy our final group Treffen dinner.

This concludes the first three weeks of our trip. Part 2, weeks 4 6, will appear in next month’s Patter.

Clunk!

A clunk is very different from a tick, which has noting to do with a hiss, a click, a squeal, a knock, a pop a rattle or a bang.

All of the above are sounds that you don't want to hear coming from your beloved Porsche. But if you do, we'll try to steer you in the right direction.

There are hundreds of different sounds a car can make. Some good, others not so much.

Also, please keep in mind that a bad component may make more than one sound, and what I describe as a clunk, you may think it's a knock. It'll be difficult trying to verbally describe the sounds, but here we go….

Clunk:

That's the most common one and usually comes from the front end. If it happens when driving on bad roads it's usually a ball joint that's worn.

Ball joints have a flexible dust boot to protect the joint. When the boot tears it can allow grease to escape and road grime to come in doing damage to the joint.

Usually the drop links are the first to go, but control arms, trailing arms, steering arms, etc., all have ball joints that wear out with time and mileage.

If it happens when driving over bumps, it could be an issue with the suspension, such as a bad upper strut mount or even a bad strut itself (it happened to me recently). If it happens when you're turning a corner, it could be a problem with the steering rack, or a worn out wheel bearing.

Squeak:

I mention squeaking here because many times it's a precursor to clunking. If your car starts squeaking when the sus-

Chesapeake Region 46

Clunk (cont’d)

pension is depressed, it may be one or more of the ball joints that has dried out and is letting you know. If you determine which one it is check the condition of its dust boot. If intact, you can try to inject some lubricant (high quality lithium grease) into the boot with a syringe or with an aerosol straw tube. If it quiets down you know it need replacement soon.

Tick Tick Tick:

So many things can tick! Generally ticking sounds are heard coming from the engine itself.

First check if the ticking varies with engine speed or car speed. That'll tell you if it's coming from the engine as you rev it with the clutch in or if it's from the drivetrain as you accelerate.

The fuel injectors (all 6 of them) can tick quite loudly. The lifters, especially if the oil level is low can tick tick tic. A shredding poly ribbed belt can tick as it goes around. Believe it or not, a very loud, metallic sounding tick an also be caused by a loose sparkplug.

If you can get the car on a lift, with the engine running, try to determine the general area where the ticking is coming from. The best listening device I use is a long screwdriver. Place the butt end against your ear and touch with the tip where you want to listen. You'll be surprised what stethoscope it is.

Knock-knock:

If you can hear knocking sounds from your engine, get it checked out ASAP, something could be seriously wrong. A knowledgeable technician can tell you if it's serious or can be easily fixed.

What's generally called engine knocking really sounds more like clattering and is generally due to using a lower gasoline octane rating than what's recommended.

Chesapeake Region 47

Clunk (cont’d)

On high compression engines, you need to use high octane to avoid pre ignition and knocking which can damage the engine. Fortunately most modern Porsches have automatic knock sensors that will retard timing to avoid pre ignition (but you will lose power).

Bang!, Pop!:

A loud bang, like a gunshot, is usually a backfire. Backfiring happens when unburnt fuel comes out of the engine and gets ignited in the exhaust pipe. This could be due to a vacuum or exhaust leak or a problem with one of the catalytic converters.

The bang can also happen in the intake at the throttle body and could indicate an issue with the fuel and or the ignition system, caused by a blocked fuel filter bad spark plugs or damaged cat.

Grinding or whirring:

If the grinding happens when shifting, you probably have an issue with a synchro in the transmission which makes your gears not mesh at a synchronized speed and therefore grind. A dried out CV Joint (drive axle) or a failing wheel bearing can also grind quite loudly.

If you hear grinding while applying the brakes, your brake pads are probably worn or you may have some debris caught between a disc and its pad.

Hissing:

A vacuum leak while accelerating makes a loud hiss. A fluid leak getting onto a hot engine surface and also hiss.

Chesapeake Region 48
PedroBonilla

Clunk (cont’d)

Rattling:

Rattles under the car means that something is loose and making noise as it vibrates. Generally a heat shield in place over the catalytic converters is one of the most common culprits. They are mounted with hardware that deteriorates in time and allow them to vibrate and create rattling.

Whistle (Coke bottle whistle):

A very distinct and loud “coke bottle” whistle is most likely the air oil separator (AOS). If the inside membrane tears, it can create this unique sound.

Roar:

Most of our cars produce a beautiful roar as we accelerate (some call it the symphony in flat-6) but if your exhaust note changes all of the sudden to a loud roar, something happened to the exhaust system. The exhaust manifold may have cracked or one of the gaskets is allowing exhaust to freely escape. The muffler may be damaged or an exhaust pipe clamp could have rusted out and become loose.

Squeal:

A loud squeal when you rev the engine, especially when cold, is one of the easiest to diagnose. The belt is most likely loose and slipping on the pulley. It could be worn and in need of replacement, or the tensioner pulley may have lost its tension.

If the squeal is coming from the wheels without using the brakes, you probably have some debris between the disc and the backing plate. If it happens when applying the brakes, then your brake pads may be worn out…. and, if it's coming from your tires, back off the gas pedal!

A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress.

Porsche Patter Turns 60!

I was looking through some of my older Porsche files today and came across something that I think you might find interesting. The Porsche Patter was created and named in 1962, which makes our Porsche Patter Newsletter 60 years old this year.

In past years we had a Chesapeake Region Trivia Question in each issue of the Porsche Patter. For the 40th Anniversary of Chesapeake Region in 2001, we issued a special 40th Anniversary Porsche Patter. The trivia question in that issue was: “Do You Know Who Started and Named Our Monthly Newsletter?”

No one knew the answer to that question in 2001. I was President of Chesapeake Region in 2001 and 2002. I was determined to find the answer to these questions. After interviewing many longtime Chesapeake Region members, Heinz Werner Bade gave me the info I was searching for.

For a bit more history, Heinz Werner Bade was a longtime Chesapeake Region member. Heinz was also a Porsche 4 cam expert. Heinz traveled the world sharing his expertise with other 4 cam mechanics. Heinz was the chief mechanic for Baltimore racing legend Bruce R. Jennings, Sr., who lived in Parkton and died at 70 on January 28,

54

1997. Bruce Jennings campaigned a Porsche 356 Carrera 4 cam.

In 2001 Heinz Werner Bade attended a Jefferson 500 event to help a friend work on the engine in his Cobra. While Heinz was there, he was introduced to Jack Garner. Heinz recognized the name and asked him if he was the same Jack Garner who was President of Chesapeake Region PCA in 1965 and 1966. He was the same Jack Garner. He was the 5th President of Chesapeake Region.

Heinz asked Jack if he knew who started and named the Porsche Patter. Jack told Heinz that Kitty Bartholomee was the person who started and named the Porsche Patter in 1962. Kitty Bartholomee was the wife of Art Bartholomee, the first Vice President of CHS in 1961 and the second President in 1962.

Sadly, Heinz Werner Bade passed in 2017. We have good Porsche history in Chesapeake Region. We have to make sure those people who are our history are not forgotten.

Thanks Porsche Annapolis

Dear Brett,

Though I have already thanked you in a phone call for your generous support and hospitality during our Oct. 23rd CC53 Gimmick Rally, I am writing to thank you and Porsche Annapolis again, this time on behalf of the Executive Council and the Board of Directors of PCA Chesapeake.

You not only gave us permission to use your main parking lot as a gimmick location, you also very kindly welcomed our members to your showroom on a Sunday, along with some members of your staff. The rally participants were surprised and pleased that you were there to personally greet them, offer them the use of the restroom and provide them with refreshments

PCA Chesapeake's officers and my fellow board members have asked me to convey to you and your staff their heartfelt gratitude. They deeply appreciate, as I do, your kindness and generosity.

Best regards, Aniano

Yes indeed Brett,

It was so much fun to see you there that Sunday, supporting our Gimmic Rally. It was a wacky fun drive to find all the answers to the Gimmic questions, & seeing you, Catherine + your team there was a treat.

I’m sure you were all laughing, as you watched out the front window, when Joan & I jumped out to take this pic …

=Steve & Joan Wood

Brett,

I wanted to follow Aniano's email and thank you as well. That was really nice of you to open your doors for us on a Sunday and certainly went way beyond what we expected. That was very generous and appreciated. As always, PLEASE let us know if there is anything that Chesapeake can do for you from helping promote your events to contributing to your charitable efforts.
