PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

April Fools?

This time last year, Porsche announced it would be expanding its Mission E model lineup with the addition of the Mission E Tractor. The new agricultural vehicle was planned to have the same 800-volt fastcharging system found on the Taycan along with loads of advanced digital connectivity technology. Power output was announced to be more than 700 horsepower, making the Mission E Tractor the fastest accelerating and quietest zero-emission tractor in the world. Farmers would be able to harvest crops in record time. Porsche stated the tractor has “enough power to set a pretty good lap time on the Nordschleife…” just in case plowing fields isn’t your thing. Predictions of brand expansion, or humor? Perhaps we shouldn’t rush to judgement. In a 1966 Road & Track article (page 63), Butzi Porsche proclaimed “…we wouldn’t build a real 4-seater…we are a sports firm…”. Please remind me which model was the unit-sales-leader for Porsche last year. Yup, a real four-seater. Hmmm, perhaps the tractor races at Rennsport VI were a hint at future product offerings. No joke, Denise and I will miss our April breakfast meeting to join a half-dozen fellow OCR members at the Santa Barbara Treffen. The PCA North America Treffens have become high interest events, with many of them selling out in less than two hours. While we are no strangers to Santa Barbara, the opportunity to drive the back roads of both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties is a real pleasure, and doing so in the company of fellow PCA members will be icing on the cake. The next Treffen will be in Woodstock, Vermont, in September.

Thanks to Ted Hoiberg, we will re-launch our autocross program this month in partnership with the Riverside Region. While the drive will be a bit further for some, the hope is to build a program that is more inclusive, coupling the AX opportunity with a cars and coffee atmosphere, wherein some will participate in competitive AX and others will splinter off into driving tours best launched out of the inland empire. Norm Follis (Chair) and Steve Fairbanks (Head Judge) have been working diligently toward our annual Concours, held in June this year at Sea Terrace Park (Dana Point.) Sherri Graybehl will soon announce the date for our New Members Picnic, and Pete Lech is working on our Hearts and Garages tour, anticipated for October. Details on both events will follow.

Have I mentioned volunteers lately? I know the request is continual, but so is the need. Remember, this is your Club, and the success of the Club and its activities depends on your participation. The best way to get involved with the Club, and meet new people with shared passions, is to volunteer. With over 100 region events each year, there is something for everyone. Please reach out to any Board member or Committee Chair and we will find you a spot. In the interim, I wish you great drives and destinations.

A very special “Porsche” day .

February 5, 2019 was a very special “Porsche” day for me. I was a guest of charles SCHWAB hosting an event at the Porsche Experience Center “PEC.” I was able to invite PCA-OCR members Ted Hisada, Dianna McKinsey, and non-members (Barbara and Jim Marshall, new Circle Macan GTS owners.) Barbara and I are friends at Pando advertiser Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center/Free Rein. As Pando Editor, I’ve enjoyed showcasing all PCA-OCR member PEC stories and photos showing the incredibly diverse opportunities our PCA-OCR members and their families have experienced such as attending various Open House events, driving, dining, shopping and much, much more. So, I was super excited since this was my first time at PEC. I drove my 2000 Cabrio from Huntington Beach on the 405, exited on Main in Carson, made a left, drove under the freeway and arrived at PEC. There’d been a lot of rain, the skies were overcast and I was praying it wouldn’t rain during the 10am-3pm event - luckily it didn’t.

Lots of free parking is available, so after picking my spot, I walked into PEC, signed in at reception, signed release papers; and went to Orientation where a Track Coach and 30 attendees were reviewing different event activities which included different obstacle driving courses focusing on driver learning opportunities and Porsche car capabilities. (Of course, without saying – the Porsche is smarter than you.) When Orientation concluded, we were each assigned a Track Coach which rode with us, in my case Mark Hotchkiss; 40 minutes in a Carrera S and then 40 minutes in a 718. It was 80 minutes of me driving and Mark as passenger. He coached me through the various track obstacles and definitely made a point of me repeating each one - sometimes three to four times until I was fully confident with each specific track obstacle challenge, such as full throttle to a yellow plate, then through water, skidding, and fast corrective driving. It really was exciting to progress through the various challenges and increase my driving proficiency. Mark is a fantastic driving coach, family man, and resembles a taller NASCAR Jeff Gordon. After completing the driving modules, each attendee had their picture taken in front of their PEC Porsche with their Track Coach and as I walked into the PEC building, I was surprised by laughing PCAOCR member Denny Asbury who’d secretly been observing, Ted, Dianna and myself zooming around. I told Denny I had a new-found respect for his former Formula driving career and thanked him for surprising us. In the upstairs 917 Dining Room, a beautiful buffet lunch was waiting for us. The food quality, presentation and attentive service was amazing combined with the wall of glass allowing us a panoramic 14 PANDO | April 2019

view of the entire PEC track areas and was a wonderful backdrop while we all talked about our individual driving adventures and agreed what an exhilarating experience it was. I went into the kitchen, asked the Chef to come out and she smiled at our appreciative, applauding group. Prior to lunch ending, I handed a media kit to the charles SCHWAB personnel (hey, seize the opportunity, pull the trigger and advertise in the Pando!!) and I also googled Mark to see the brave Track Coach’s experience. Mark’s a retired race driver whose career included winning at Road America, placing second in the season finale at Phoenix International Raceway and beating Juan Pablo Montoya for second place in the Standings; then moving onto Indy Lights racing. Mark and his brother John own a classic Porsche 962 race car they campaign in various vintage races. After lunch, our group went to the first floor Simulator room, equipped with numerous simulators and an elevated “command center.” All I’ll say is I’m clearly much, much better at the real driving than being on the simulator! I’ll consider whether I need to go to AAA and review my current insurance coverage! After completing the simulator exercise, I relaxed in the Lobby, admired the beautiful historic Porsche’s on display and watched Dianna – with a PCA-OCR media packet - at Reception asking for the name of the PEC Marketing Director! I still had the Retail Shop and “Factory Tour” to do – but I’m saving that for another PEC adventure. Thank you, Matt Bohm and Brian MacLachlan, of charles Schwab for hosting an exciting and memorable PEC event.

Porsche’s

Taycan Charge

Performance of Porsche vehicles has always been electrifying, but with the upcoming introduction of the all-new Porsche Taycan, Porsche goes full electric. As Porsche’s first all-electric model, the Taycan (pronounced ‘tie-can’) goes on sale toward the end of this year as a 2020 model. Taycan means ‘lively young horse,’ according to Porsche, and references the horse found at the center of the Porsche crest. The Taycan is the production version of the stunning Mission E concept vehicle Porsche showed at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Story and Photos by Fred Aikins and Porsche Newsroom

April 2019 | PANDO 23

1.

With 600+hp routed through a pair of permanently synchronous motors to all four wheels, the Taycan boasts a claimed 0-60mph time of under 3.5 seconds and 0-124mph (200kph) in less than 12 seconds. In other words, buyers opting for electrons rather than gasoline will still receive the performance expected from a Porsche. Power for the Taycan will consist of an ~90kW liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack good for an estimated 310 miles (500km) of range (European cycle; U.S. EPA figures are expected closer to launch). Using advanced 800-watt charging, the Taycan is expected to be able to recharge its battery to 80% in just 15 minutes, a significant advantage over existing EVs that require 45 minutes to four hours for such a recharge. Porsche dealers have committed to spending ~$70M on rechargers at Porsche dealerships across the country and Porsche Taycan drivers will also be able to access the nationwide network of recharging stations being constructed by parent VW’s Electrify America initiative (part of the company’s ‘Diesel gate’ settlement with the U.S. government.) A state-of-the-art “factory-within-a-factory” production line at Porsche’s main plant in Zuffenhausen will produce the all-new Taycan. Latest production estimates for the Taycan, which will be offered in all of Porsche’s primary markets including the U.S., Europe and China, are up to 40,000 vehicles annually. As for competition, the electric elephant in the room is the groundbreaking Tesla Model S EV sedan. The slightly larger Model S boasts ~300 miles of range from a larger battery. In the Taycan, the Model S gets something it has never faced before – a real, direct competitor. The face-off between the two will be closely watched by EV and performance car enthusiasts alike.

24 PANDO | April 2019

2.

3.

Pricing for the Taycan will be announced later this year, but expect it to be competitive with the upper models of the Tesla Model S, meaning ~$90,000 to $130,000, depending on options.

Macan Goes Electric At the end of February, Porsche announced that the next-generation Macan compact SUV would be allelectric when it arrives early next decade, likely in 2022 or 2023. The nextgen Macan will be built in Porsche’s factory in Leipzig, Germany. Porsche’s best-selling model line by annual volume, the Macan, which was introduced in 2014, has been responsible for attracting new customers to the brand, as well as retaining and expanding the existing customer base. The upcoming Macan EV was foreshadowed by the Mission E Cross Tourismo concept that was shown at last year’s Geneva Auto Salon and was well received by the media and public, alike. While pricing for the new Macan EV won’t be announced until much closer to its on-sale date early next decade, expect it to carry a premium over the recently introduced Audi e-tron CUV, with which it likely will share EV components.

What’s Next?

4. The next-generation Macan will be built in Porsche’s factory in Leipzig, Germany. 1-3. A state-of-the-art “factory-within-a-factory”

Porsche has announced that by 2025, 50% of all Porsche models sold worldwide will be electrified, meaning full-EV or plug-in hybrids. The increasing use of EVs and hybrid powertrains allow Porsche to meet increasingly stringent emission and fuel consumption regulations in Europe, China and the U.S., while still allowing the driving performance that Porsche buyers expect.

production line at Porsche’s main plant in Zuffenhausen will produce the all-new Taycan.

Eventually, EVs will be required as a number of cities (Paris, London, etc.) and countries (China) have announced their intent to ban all petrol-fueled vehicles by 2030. Even regulators in California, one of Porsche’s largest markets, have begun considering a ban on ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles by 2030. Porsche is not alone in moving toward EVs and electrification. Luxury competitors including Audi (e-tron), Mercedes-Benz (EQ models), BMW (iNext) and Jaguar (I-Pace) have all entered the market or will shortly. One thing none of the current crop of EVs has managed to achieve is consistent profitability (Note: Tesla has reported inconsistent quarterly profits). Given the Porsche’s per-unit profits are recognized as being among the highest in the industry (you’ve seen their options and parts pricing, haven’t you?) the upcoming Taycan and Macan EV could become some of the most consistently profitable EVs on the market, which bodes well for Porsche’s longterm outlook and for the company’s continued production of sports cars and performance models. Beyond the Taycan and Macan EV, expect other Porsche models to get either the full-EV treatment or, at the very least, plug-in hybrid models, including the Boxster / Cayman, Cayenne and Panamera lines. Does this mean that even the iconic 911 will get a full-EV or plug-in hybrid model? Probably, though Porsche will likely hold off on that one until they are completely confident that it can be done with the acceleration and vehicle dynamics that Porsche enthusiasts have come to expect from the 911.

It will be held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf-Astoria … and the room rates will be very reasonable for this luxurious resort. In early 2019, we’ll have complete details, and registration for the hotel and for Parade will be open then. So, plan now for your 2019 summer vacation to be at Parade in Boca.In case you’re not familiar, it’s a beautiful part of Florida: on the Atlantic, just north of Fort Lauderdale, with July’s comfortable sea breezes and summer temps in the high 80s. At 2018’s Parade, there were about 900 Porsches and almost 1,800 attendees. It took 40 year-round Volunteers and more than 700 on-site Volunteers to make it happen. For 2019, we’ll need 100s of Volunteers as well, from all over the country, and there will be an official Volunteer Registration process. But if you’re interested in helping on the front end, by providing local expertise and help with planning Tours, Rallies, and all the other events, please let your Region Leadership know now or email zone 12rep@pca.org. Stay tuned for more information, but check out these sites now:

• Boca Raton Resort and Club • 2019 Porsche Parade Facebook Page • PCA National Website for Porsche Parade Are you a new PCA member? Well, welcome to the Club!! But you might be asking, “What’s all this about a ‘Parade’?” Porsche Parade is the “big” Porsche Club event of the year: our annual national convention. Parade has a wide variety of activities and club members from all across North America (and elsewhere!) come together for this once-a-year extravaganza to participate in a week of competitive events, to socialize and enjoy their cars, with seminars and tours adding to the event’s variety. For many club members, Parade is their big vacation for the year. It provides them with an opportunity to see new parts of the country as well as to visit with PCA friends that they only see once a year, at Parade! Competitive Events:

• 5k Run/Walk • Autocross • Concours d’Elegance • RC Cars • Tech Quiz • Gimmick Rally • TSD Rally

has been a reasonably serviced car, with engine service and compression checks, and all is “OK.” Have you ever had your old oil filter cut open to see what is in the paper element? It’s a very good idea, at least every once in a while. In the engine, what’s the condition of your valves, valve guides, and head studs? And, most importantly, are there any noticeable oil-carbon leaks at the top of the cylinders, where the cylinder head are

located? If there is any of that, the GAME IS OVER, until that’s rectified. I’ve seen this on 930 Turbos that drove on for years, and as most owners rarely use full rpm/boost to redline, it hasn’t caught their attention. However, if there is any dark carbon-oily evidence around the top of the cylinder and cylinder head, it is critical to STOP and check the problem. IF this is on an end cylinder (Cylinders 1, 3, 4, & 6), this evidence is cause to STOP everything on any 911/930. FIX THAT NOW! This problem is normally a broken Dilavar stud and the need for a “valve job” which 32 PANDO | April 2019

The following is for those having no issues with the above. First and foremost is the desire to want more power and want it sooner (quicker). So, the first thing here is to see if you’re actually getting all of what you have available? This is checking for full throttle opening when your throttle pedal is flat on the boards! I have never seen a 911 or 930 that has a 100% throttle opening from the factory, most had 70% and up. With a Turbo, on full boost, it may not make much

It isn’t easy, even with a bright flashlight, but you can see it with a mirror. Your throttle must pull the control rod so the throttle stop is touched on Wide Open Throttle. I took an old broom stick and put a rubber cap on each end, easily wedged it against the driver seat side bolster and wedged it in so it pushes the throttle pedal all the way to the floor. (This also works well for the brake pedal to check your brake lights.)

If the “W.O.T.” is not there? Or the pedal is too high up? Or too low? (More than likely). Now you can not only fix this but also adjust all 3-foot pedals for easier use and efficiency.

ASK A MECHANIC: Brake bleed screw won’t bleed? “… I was finishing up my C-2 Carrera’s brake job and loosening the right front in-board bleeder, but why didn’t I have any fluid coming out? I checked the fluid reservoir, and it was over halffull, and air pressure bleeder was still up at 12 psi. All other bleeders, so far, worked just fine. I had to wait a day or so to get a new bleed screw to finish my brake project. Why do they clog up? The only thing I know of that positively will clog a Bleeder Screw is road dirt, brake dust, and water. Unfortunately, it makes for a nice ‘cement mix.’ It is critical to reinstall the “Dust Boot” securely on each bleed screw after bleeding any brake, as well as the clutch servo bleeder (1987-.) Yes, brake dust, water, and dirt WILL POSITIVELY, get into these bleeder screws and when it dries, that crud solidifies hard and clogs the small drilled holes inside the bleed screw. This can be a real PAIN, especially when you think you are almost done after a long brake job, and then you find one that won’t bleed anything, unless you unscrew the bleeder two or more turns and make a mess all over the caliper, disc, wheel hub, floor, etc. Then,

you never know if any air, somehow, got back in the caliper? Recently, and once again, I found the same problem, solidified crud dried very hard inside a 7 mm Bleed Screw (Nr. 928. 351. 927. 10), on my G-50 Clutch Servo cylinder. These 7 mm bleeder screws were used on most all brake calipers up until the 1969 911S with its new, larger 2 piston aluminum front calipers and needed to flush a larger volume of fluid, so a new and larger bleeder screw was used. The later 1978 930 Turbo used an even larger, aluminum, 4-piston calipers on all four wheels, and it uses even more fluid volume. So, the need exists to flush even more fluid through them to get small amounts of air out of the many places it hides. A good volume flush of fluid does just that. I had no spare 7 mm bleeder screws handy, so I had to turn off the pressure bleeder, remove the bleeder screw, and fix it. I washed it with solvent, then using a metric drill bit set, I found the size for the bleeder outlet (3.5mm.) Then, carefully twisting by hand, I slowly drilled out the crud until it stopped. It bottomed out. [see Fig.2.] Now I needed a smaller drill (2.0 mm) to do the same until it stopped again. Cleaning out to the bottom of the 2.0 mm hole, where an even smaller hole is seen on the side of the bleed screw. This is the 1.5 mm hole where the fluid comes into the bleeder screw. The 7 mm bleeder screw has 3 bore holes and they all needed to be cleaned out. It was either this or order and wait a day or so for a new 7 mm bleeder screw from Porsche at $10.44 ea. The larger 10 mm bleed screws (Nr. 930. 351. 919. 00) for the larger brakes (911S, 930, 964, 993-,) have one long 3.0 mm

hole bored all the way down to the 1.5 mm hole, and a new 10 mm “Porsche Bleed Screw” lists at: $26.65 each. (PET- Jan. 2019) Officially, the Porsche PET parts system names these bleeder screws as a “Ventilation Valve.” I call them “Bleeder Screws” as even some Porsche technical publications do this as well.

Fig. 2. The 7 mm bleed screw and internal bore holes. (7.0mm x 1.0mm thread size)

1. The “7 mm Porsche Bleeder Screw” fits into a 7.0 mm x 1.0 mm machined hole in the caliper, and is loosened and tightened with its 7 mm hex. 2. The “10 mm Porsche Bleeder Screw” fits into 10.0mm x 1.0mm machined hole in the caliper- However the Porsche 10 mm bleeder screw has a 11 mm hex. 3. You need bleeding wrenches, 6 point; 7 mm, & 6-point 11 mm, box end wrenches. Replacement bleed screws are available from DORMAN and through Amazon, O’Reilly, AutoZone, etc. * The 7 x 1.0 mm bleed screw is available: Dorman / O’Reilly # 13905 in a (2 ea.) package for $5.49. April 2019 | PANDO 33

* The 10.0 x 1.0 mm bleed screw is available: DORMAN/O’Reilly # 13906 (2 ea.) package for $5.49. However, their 10.0 x 1.0 bleed screw has a 10 mm hex, and not the standard Porsche 11mm hex. Bleed Caps see [Fig.5.] I found at O’Reilly, and get this, these have an O’Reilly part number of: 930. 351. 927. 01. O’Reilly price is $2.99 ea. 4. The Dust Boots become less flexible over time and it can be difficult to remove them. Using a Nitrile type glove, I can grip the top part of the Dust Cap with my thumb and finger, then wiggle, and pull it off. Trust me, after removing all 8 bleeder caps your fingers are tired!

Fig 3. The 7 mm bleeder screw with the original cap only and the later 1976- 911/930 large DUST BOOT with ‘loop.’

Fig 4. 10 mm bleeder screw with late cap & loop.

5. Silicone or Dielectric Grease: Lightly smear a little on each clean bleeder nipple and the dust cap will go on and come off much easier and will seal further against moisture. As a matter of fact, you may want to invest in a few spare dust caps. Lastly, if your bleed screw caps look old, feel hard and ’un-rubbery,’ they really are old, and likely to be gone by the next brake job. Replace all of them! Get the new Dust Caps! Think about the last time you did, or had your Porsche washed, and all that water going into clean your nasty, dirty brake dusted wheels-and brakes, did that motivate you?

Godspeed, Leslie F. Rice
