President’s Message By Greg Lush Love of cars One of my earliest memories, arguably the start of my love affair with cars, is when my twin brother and I were six years old. A beautiful summer afternoon up in the mountains, 7200’ elevation with fresh pine tree scented air rushing around Father’s ’57 Speedster. We were approaching a hairpin turn on the Green Valley Lake road and before we knew it the car was in a full 360 spin. My Dad, having gained experience driving Sprint cars on dirt tracks, did not even blink. Simply managed the car and once we were headed straight again looked up in the mirror and said,“Wasn’t that great?” and with a pregnant pause followed it with, “And let’s not tell your Mom”. The first few years of driving was more about affordability as opposed to sweeping lines or personality of the car. My family always had one Porsche in the garage; however, we also had British cars. Due to the finicky nature of most British vehicles, having one was typically not the

So go on, plan some time with just you and your car. I love going out on a nice evening with my scotch, my squirt bottle and a colorful selection of micro-fiber clothes. Just dusting, wiping and polishing the worries of my day right away…

wisest move, you always needed at least two. In 1981, I had just graduated from high school and was checking on the progress of repair work on my Dad’s Lotus Europa. Arriving in my VW Sirocco, I spoke with the mechanic, then, as I was leaving, he says, “Nice VW, would you like to swap pink slips for my ‘66 Mini Cooper?” I had no idea what he was talking about so we went to check out his Mini. At first glance, a smile instantly hit my face. Now that car had personality. Without hesitation I agreed and minutes later I was headed back to Green Valley Lake in my new-old Mini Cooper. That love affair has stood the test of time and a smile still hits my face every weekend when I cruise around town in my Mini. Enough about me, let’s see if you share some car lover traits. You know that you’re a car lover when: 1. You spend more time washing your car than showering 2. You own different colored buffing towels 3. Your shower towel is lint free 4. You can’t resist leaning over to enjoy

Porsche Overload? Not in the sense of how much cargo one can take, in fact that is quite a bit as I’ve recently discovered in “BESS” the Panamera. But, in the sense of doing stuff, things, road trips and whatnot, thanks to the OCR, it continues to unfold as a very memorable year. Within the last two months I’ve been to Monterey and back as well as the Central Coast and back, not bad. Garey Selfie

Why Certainly! This is the first year I’ve ever been able to attend the official “Porsche Parade”. It is an entire week devoted to all things Porsche; past, present and future. It is typically held on or near one side of these

excited states so that it alternates eastward/ westward in terms of the location. This year was definitely westward, in Monterey, California. Practically in our own backyard, well within 400 or so miles of it anyway. Close enough for a good touring car, and a good touring companion, that would be the redoubtable Mrs. Maxine T. Cooper, born in the Bronx, New York but now a California girl through and through. I wonder if she knew what she was getting into back when she met that Surfer Dude in Manhattan? Ah well, caveat boyfriend. So, go we did and we shared a four bedroom house on the Pebble Beach Peninsula with four couples; Mark and Tina Trewartha, Jay and Marjorie Warren, Solomon and Jacquie Braun and the two “yours truly”, Maxine and Garey. I wonder if the neighbors thought that home values were heading up with 4 new Porsches wandering the local roads? Probably not (Continued on Page 37)

44th Annual White Gloves Concours Story by Garey Cooper

In fact this year was our 44th annual White Gloves, which is quite a long run when you consider the manufacture of Porsche cars has only been a little longer than this. I am sure the Orange Coast Region must have had Concours (don’t pronounce the “s”) before, but perhaps they weren’t called White Gloves, so they didn’t begin to count them until 1970. A lot has changed for Porsche since 1970 and amongst the major changes must

be the sheer number of models available. In the 1970 Concours, there might have been a few choices; 911, 912, 356 and 914. But in the year 2014, we’ve have all of those plus SUVs, sedans, Boxsters and Caymans. Our modern society has more variety and seems a much more colorful place as a result, at least in the Porsche world. Our Concours Director this year was the returning Mr. Norm Follis, as always, ably assisted by his wife Carolyn. Norm did a sterling job, as he has in years past, and one of his most notable accomplishments was working diplomatically with the city of Dana Point to keep us eligible for the use of our venue, Lantern Bay Park. This is notable, as the city is justifiably nervous about having a bunch of cars parked for any length of time on parkland grasses, not to mention low-slung Carerras gouging out pieces of the turf in and around the area. They also don’t want extra work picking up after a messy bunch, so we must walk a line that respects the usage requirements of Lantern Bay Park and at the same tine allows our Zone 8 Concours

Competitors the experience that matches their superlative machines. I am informed, by Norm, the city is more or less pleased with our husbandry of their precious resource and indeed we have their permission to return to Lantern Bay for next year’s event. I say “more or less” because we did take a few gouges out of the turf in the entrance/exit area. We weren’t perfect and do have some areas to improve. But Enough of That! Okay, let’s talk about the Concours. The logistics of getting in and parking more than 11) a hundred automobiles(Continued owned onbyPage finicky Porsche types is part of the Concours story that some or many miss. If one gets to the Park about the time that others are going to sleep after a party Saturday night, one would see the prep work begin. Parking and display areas are laid out with concern about classes and judging. This year, returning Field Marshall Paul Wilkenson did the design work and the early day prep. Paul did a fine job, and at the end of Concours Sunday Paul must be thinking… R&R! Our day began with a Color Guard contingent, the 5th Marines from Camp Pendleton. This year our Marines were Sergeant Hernandez, Corporal Wu,

Corporal Rodriguez, and Lance Corporal Haymaker. The Color Guard was arranged by Chris DeRose and they performed superbly. As the Colors were presented, we had a special treat, the singing of the National Anthem by Colette Lush, the daughter of our own OCR President Greg Lush. I have a photo of Greg looking at his daughter while she sings the anthem and his smile is about the best representation of a proud papa I’ve seen yet. Colette is a student at Tesoro High School and she is indeed a treasure (which is the English translation for Tesoro.) This kicked off our official day. (The unofficial day, as noted, begins MUCH

earlier.) I am always reminded that there are serious competitors on the field when Chief Judge, Joe Nedza, starts his judges’ meeting. Considering that this is a full Zone 8 event, we have Concours competitors from other regions who participate looking to add to their points totals for the year. As Kimi Raikonnen said, “They know what they’re doing.” To be a judge in these events requires training, experience and the ability to work under the withering stare of a Porsche owner that just knows his or her car is the best in the field! Not always easy, indeed. There are Concours categories that open up the entire car to inspection and

others that confine judging to solely the exterior. Having your entire car judged means not only must you have that shiny look outside, but also some stranger is going to stick their hands into the sordid underbelly of your beast, where the rubber meets the road, and expects to pull them out, intact and with nary a smudge. The days entertainment was music provided by Einstein Brown. He played the steel drum and was a delightful and really optimistic fellow. I even joined him for a duet on the chorus of “Under the Sun”, and no one threw any vegetables. Is it too late for a second career, does the MET need a new tenor? Or janitor? I tried to fit the new Turbo Macan onto my credit card but couldn’t make it (Mrs. Cooper had beat me to the limit with a small visit to Nordstroms). Wait until next year! See page 15 for a tribute to all of our sponsors with pictures. Speaking of old announcers, imagine having to twist your tonsils around, “The Porsche Club of America, Orange Coast Region, 44th Annual White Gloves Concours” several times a day. It is challenging and I try not to drop too many important vowels or consonants in my epiglottis. Although I must admit I do not include the parentheses in my vocal rendering. There is a limit to human speech. Bet you wish I bet you wish you had a Mayor like Ms. Lisa Bartlett for your own city! Once again Ms. Bartlett appeared with us and stayed to hand out the trophies to all of the classes and overall winners. We thank her so much for being with us. Mayor Bartlett and her husband owned a 356, which they restored some years ago, so she does have a background that relates to the day. Power Behind the Throne No event of this size (a record breaker at 194 cars on the field) and complexity could be held without volunteers, and plenty of them. Norm is a tall guy and perhaps this helps in his arm twisting, but he brings them in, and with Norm’s diplomacy they seem to enjoy the day as well. There were many notable volunteers but I want to mention a few: 1. Norm and Carolyn Follis, of course. 2. Ron Ketelhut, Goodie Bag stuffer assisted by his wife Stacy. 3. I already mentioned Paul Wilkenson so I won’t do it again… Oh wait, I just did! 4. Gloria Moore and the Reinholdts, registration. A big job on the day, and old announcer that I am, I did not realize that I had forgotten to register at motorsports.com for this years Concours. How rude of me! Well, I was worried that Gloria and her helpers would surround me, karate chop me to the ground, render me senseless (which wouldn’t necessarily take a karate chop) and rip the credit card right out of my otherwise empty wallet. But she smilingly informed me that cash would do, so I took off my shoe and got the money out of my (Continued on Page 13)

hidden stash to pay for the day. What, you thought I got paid for this? Friends, I would gladly pay to do this. 5. Monica & Denny Asbuy, Goodie table and stuff. Denny also designed the shirts and banners this year. 6. Chris and Dick DeRose, who sold their Porsche at the Concours! Other than this, they did the scoring. They are moving from our fair shores, don’t go guys. 7. Joe Nedza, head judge or more properly, “chief cat herder”. I liken his job to the proverbial herding of cats, as shepherding that many egos through the judgment day is a special talent and a thicker sort of skin, I would guess! A special mention must be made for Larry Kaprielian. He was the gate sheriff and spent the better part of the day at his post, remote, mostly unloved (did you ever love anyone at the gate to an event?), and underpaid. Actually not paid, which says a lot for his patience. I know he was at his post when I undertook the 1/2 mile walk to the bathroom, coming back he was still standing sentinel for us. I wonder if he thought about how many times I had to walk by?

Turbo Engines - Part 2 Story by Lee Rice

Turbos Part 2 Continuing on with our saga of the turbocharger… The Turbo slowly plodded along with added on emission controls and less power than it’s European version, but racers, hot rodders and tuners had other ideas. Perhaps some ideas that saved the 911 from extinction? Then, in July 1987 Alois Ruf brought his new “ctr” –a modified turbocharged 911 to Road & Track’s “The World’s Fastest Cars - High Speed ShootOut’ at Ehra-Leisson’s VW test track. The race was on it’s 5 mile oval outer track. Ruf’s 911 ran after almost everyone else had run their cars, including Porsche’s super high technology (and overly complicated) 959, which ran with a tremendous speed of 195 mph. Then the RUF CTR, Ruf’s plain looking, smooth aerodynamic body 911 with it’s wild yellow paint job, ran too. This 911, titled a “CTR,” sped to a top speed of over 211 mph. The CTR out-ran every other car that showed up, and it’s 211 mph run put the CTR (nicknamed YellowBird) into the record and history books – forever. The true story The real story behind what automotive writer’s called the CTR, the “YellowBird”, was actually a very simple truth. Ruf had simply taken the components that were available on the Porsche parts shelves from both road and racing Porsches, and then added to them by making some special pieces of his own. The CTR’s goal was to have a more aerodynamic body, a modified

turbocharged engine system and a simple, packaged, lightweight 911. And the CTR had two turbochargers. These turbochargers made the CTR not just creep up to 211 mph, but BLAST to its gear limiting speed! This was seen as an opportunity for many 911/930 owners to improve what Porsche had ignored for so long, and turbocharger technology was the key. Porsche Redesigns Porsche did redesign the 911 into first the 964C-2/4 for 1989, then in 1992 the newest Turbo, still with 3.3 liters (M30/69), and in 1994 went up to 3.6liters (M64/50) and upgraded both turbo engines with a newer turbocharger, the KKK K-27-7200. This was an improvement for the still yet undeveloped, small ported and small camed engine, but the K27-7200 gave improved throttle control and made full boost up to near 6,000 rpms. This is still one of the best turbochargers ever built! Many turbo tuners have replaced their old 3LDZ with K-27s of one variant or the other with very good performance and most importantly, reliability. In 1996 the new 4-wheel drive 993 turbo 3.6 Liter (964/60) (400 DIN HP) came out with twin K-16 turbochargers. This new engine was now all D.E.M. controlled and thus it’s power limiting was done inside the factory controlled and sealed E.C.U. It took turbo tuners only about 3 months to figure out the codes in the E.C.U. and then modify the twin turbo E.C.U. for an additional 100+ horsepower. Since theses engines came stock with big 42 mm intake ports, high lift (hydraulic) cams, headers, intercooler, ignition, etc, etc, they only needed a higher fuel pressure regulator

and then the 993tt and could benefit from larger twin K-24 turbochargers. Porsche succeeded in making the Turbo a mild mannered sports car with predictable boost and driving behavior. It has been reported by some, that it, “drives like a big Chevy V-8”. With the 2002 996 Turbo GT-2 and GT-3 and then the later 997 Turbo GT-2 and GT-3, they had become computer controlled cars and turbochargers had evolved dramatically again. Computers now controlled cam shaft timing, fuel injection timing as well as all of the ignition functions, variable intake ‘ram pipes. Even the actual throttle plate is controlled by the E.C.U. You can push the pedal down as much as you want to, but the E.C.U is doing the actual power control. The ECU also controls the twin turbochargers boost output by adjusting the Variable Guide Vanes inside each turbocharger. This controls the amount of exhaust that flows through or bypasses the turbine. It’s a variable combined, control system; completely unnoticed by the driver. Even though the driver steps on the power, the computers does most of the “driving”. This is, after all, what the customer has been asking for and its also what has been deemed what is needed in a ever increasing push for clean, energy efficient cars. New Porsche owners cannot detect the turbochargers presence. These new generation 911 Turbos make power with clever tuning that makes it perform as one smooth power flow with predictable behavior. Book Review:

Porsche 956 & 962 Imortal Endurance Racers 1982-1984 Published by Iconografix, Hudson, WI. This book is part of the Ludvigsen Library Series. It is not a book for the casual reader. In fact, it is not a book to read at all. Only the introduction by Karl Ludvigsen is pure text, the remainder of the book is page after page of full-page photographs and illustrations, with comprehensive captions. The captions tell the story of the cars and the racing seasons, both in Europe and the USA. Included are on-track shots, cutaway drawings, factory and workshop photos, and ‘blueprints’. Somewhat off-putting to modern readers, most of the pictures are black and white, partly as a function of the era in which they were taken, and partly to keep the cost of a book with 121 full-page illustrations within reason. Photos on the front and back covers are, however, in color. The introduction by Karl Ludvigsen makes clear that the World Endurance Championship Group C rules adopted for 1982ff, were newly-focused on fuel economy as the primary constraint on performance. These rules are clearly a forerunner of the fuel economy constraints imposed for the 2014 season. Porsche thrived under the rules introduced in 1982 and the 956 cars dominated European championships, including 7 consecutive Le Mans wins. The iconic Rothmans and Jägermeister cars were Group C cars. The Porsche 956 was designed by Norbert Singer and built by Porsche in 1982 for the World Sportscar Championship. It was later upgraded to the 956B in 1984. Driven by Stefan Bellof in 1983, the 956 holds the all-time record for the fastest vehicle to ever lap the famed Nürburgring, completing the 20.81 km (12.93 mi) circuit in 6:11.13. The 956 was a very successful car, sweeping the top three places in its first Le Mans appearance. The car features a chassis made of an aluminum monocoque, the first for Porsche, helping to get the car down to the 800 kg (1,764 lb) weight minimum in Group C. The very first dual clutch gearbox was also designed for the

956, mated to a traditional 5-speed manual. The book describes how the 956s were morphed into the 962s (to meet IMSA safety regulations), which were then very successful in American races. PORSCHE 956 & 962 is oriented toward the dedicated 956/962 enthusiast. Ludvigsen’s introduction sets the stage on which the 956s (and 962s) performed. Examination of the pictures allows identification of the configuration and make-up of the performers. Though some of the pictures are truly ‘pretty’ and presented as ‘proofs’ for the purchase of mounted prints (see page 128 for ordering details),

the real message comes from studying the evolution of features illustrated. If you ever had a ‘thing’ for the 956/962 cars, you will find many pictures (car portraits in context) to drool over in this book. PORSCHE 956 & 962 has 128 8-1/2 x 10 inch pages. turbochargers have come along with modified K27 hybrid versions. Some of them do give more boost or better throttle response. Some work very well and some don’t. What is really exciting is that new ideas are coming from old time turbocharger manufactures as turbocharging has become more than something you just add onto a car. Today, you don’t build a new car and a new engine and then put on a turbocharger that fits it. Now you can get a turbocharger that meets the specific driving needs for very specific uses. Drag racers, for instance, are brutal. They are using half open throttle and then slamming open the throttle at the green light, thus giving it only 1 second to full boost – HANG ON. What is interesting is that most of these new generation turbos are reliable doing this. More recent Turbos Garrett turbochargers have been around for a long time and their more recent “GT” turbo versions are an evolution with a new ball bearing design that has lower friction and improves spool up dramatically. I am currently using a Garrett GT35R on my 3.6 CIS turbo engine with maybe 450+ HP. Any personal evaluation is premature, but so far I am very satisfied. KKK has now merged into Borg Warner, which also incorporated Eberspächer, and Holset forming a new company named “3K Warner.” *Note of interest: Porsche’s first racing turbo car, the 917-10K, used two Eberspächer turbochargers with ball bearings. That was back in 1972. Some

new things are just not that new, but they do keep getting better. What is coming in the future is coming quickly into production. 3K-Warner is introducing their newest turbocharger line, the EFR with “Gamma Ti” technology; this refers to the titanium turbines for instant spool up. EFR also has thin wall stainless steel or Ni Resist twin turbine housings for extremely smooth gas flow and lighter weight. The EFR also incorporates an internal waste-gate and internal boost control in the compressor housing. No need for an external waste gate. And the compressor wheel is a forged, milled (billet). The mid section is longer with a larger shaft and larger twin row ballbearings. Honeywell (actually read Garrett) is developing a new turbo idea that uses one turbocharger to replace Twin Turbos by using a medium size single turbine that spins two very small compressor wheels. This turbocharger has two air inlets to the compressors: one in the center opening as before, and the other through a tube to a circumferential duct flowing into the back side of the rear compressor. No need for two separate intake tubes, two intercoolers, two oil systems, two heavy iron turbine housing or a maze of hoses and tubes and the extra weight! Garrett and 3K-Warner are now the leaders. They are in competition with each other for the new markets, not just for racing glory and respect, but for the econocar and powerful sedans that so many like. And also for good clean power, averaging

45-60 mpg in a vehicle that drives like a V-6. All this is becoming more of a reality today, not just a possibility. Competition for the world’s car needs and after market needs will benefit all of us. Le Mans 2014 revealed the Hybrid racing (for now) turbocharger. This new “turbo” has a longer housing between the compressor and the turbine, which houses an electronic motor. As the race car lifts off throttle for braking, much of that is now done by electronic wheel motors and some of the electrical power generated is used by the ecu to power the turbocharger keeping it spinning at boost speed. So, at the next power application - full boost is instantaneous! And lastly the wasted gas exiting on the 919’s turbocharger is again being used to spin a turbine to generate electrical power… And so the future, I hope, is using even newer, smarter and simpler computers with hybrid regenerative electrical energy to make use of small gas turbine in cars? Imagine a “whistling” Porsche turbine car. What are your thought for a future Porsche? A moveable and moving feast The Parade is rather like the Olympics in the sense that venues for the various events can be widely scattered. For instance, Autocross was held at a local municipal airfield while tours ranged from Monterey to Big Sur to Salinas to … I was unaware that Castroville (no not Fidel it was another Castro) was the “Artichoke Capitol of the World”, but now I know. Unfortunately we missed the festival itself. I am forced to wonder exactly what one does at an Artichoke festival, a Concours for Artichokes? Jerusek with Nancy Troast, and Brian and Carolyn Quadt. Sorry if I missed anyone here, but these are the folks I recall running into within all of the activities. I know that our gang did well in several categories and scored some good wins on the Concours side. (All will be revealed next month.) This includes Bob Webber, after his adventure with his beautiful historic turbo racing Porsche. I received a lovely note from member Clifford Crane, newly wed as of June 28th

I get around As mentioned, to see the Parade one has to get around. And it is not possible to get around to it all. For instance, I attended a set of technical presentations provided by Porsche at the headquarters hotel one morning and then attended a banquet at another location that same evening. It is a very busy and fun week indeed. If you want to go next year, it’s in French Lick, Indiana. Now don’t make fun of that city name. If you wish to attend, pay close attention to the announced date of sign up and make double darn sure that you get up very early that morning and sign up for the events you wish to attend. It is all a bit confusing but since events are so popular, if you snooze you may lose, depending upon what you want to do. For instance, by early the first morning to signup, the cooking classes that I was sure Mrs. Cooper would want to attend were sold out. So, do go but don’t forget to be diligent on signing up early. I get around (part deux) About six weeks from the time I am writing this column, Mrs. Cooper and I are off to Ireland and then for three glorious days the Goodwood Revival. I wrote about this the last time I attended and will do so again. Exciting times here at “Wistful Vista”, our home in San Diego. Did I say I was retired? It sure doesn’t seem like it somehow. Enjoy summer and get that Porsche out of the garage.

Temperatures Rising (not) Monterey being Monterey and right smack on the ocean, the temperature, for us from San Diego, went from the 80s to a temperate 60s during the day. This meant that we were woefully underprepared for arctic conditions, not having packed a parka or set of muck-lucks. Our first evening at the welcoming banquet on the Presidio was more an exercise in survival than joy. Now I know that you hearty born on the east coast types are going to say, “what a
