I
’ve just finished displaying my two Porsches at two different shows, my 1987 Carrera Targa at the Porsche White Glove Concours, and my 1967 912 Coupe in the Porsche Corral at the Fountain Valley Car Show. After personally preparing both cars for the shows, I realize how much work must be put into the preparation by those of you who actually participate in the Concours portion of shows. I’m envious, I don’t have that much time to devote to cleaning and waxing the areas of my cars that would cause point deductions. We saw a lot of beautiful cars participate in the 47th Annual White Glove Concours. A big thank you to Concours Chair Mark Wallace, and his crew for putting together a great day in the park. Also, I want to thank Pete Haak for once again inviting PCA-OCR to participate in a Porsche Corral at the Fountain Valley Car & Truck Show. For those of you who missed the awards ceremony, our own Scott Fleener won the Class 20 (Porsche) Award. What I
enjoyed most at both the Concours and the Porsche Corral, was the camaraderie of the Porsche people attending the events (and of course, the cars). Onto something for us older members, you know, our retired members. As you saw in the July edition, we are trying to get a group together mid-week to partake in little adventures; this was the idea of our fearless leader, Scott McDonald, and so far it has been enjoyable for those who’ve participated. If you would like to join us in our adventures, please let Scott know you’d like to be involved. It looks like we may have a moniker for our group, the “RPMs.” We are still working on exactly what the “M” stands for . . . Retired Porsche M? Maybe you can help us with that as well! In closing, as you all may know, I really enjoy two things in life, photography and Porsches. Being a Porsche owner I am able to photograph Porsches for myself and others. Two passions combined. How fortunate can one be?

LETTERFrom the Editor The Pando Team is super excited in bringing you the most popular and eagerly anticipated August issue highlighting our annual PCA-OCR White Glove Concours. The Pictures! The Award Winners! Plus, a terrific article by Dan Pittman capturing all the people, moments, sights, and sounds of our marquee event. A well deserved thank you to all the participants, judges, club sponsors, volunteers, the City of Fountain Valley and to the numerous visitors that contributed to such a fantastic day!
Story by Marcia Salans Photo by Dick Sartor
From the Concours to racing, our OCR members are an adventurous group, and Jim Salzer is no exception as he shares his personal Porsche journey in “Building A Race Car.” Continuing the racing theme, the combination of Rob Alen’s overview of Le Mans and Don Chapman’s AX article puts you in the driver’s seat and helps improve your vision awareness and it’s significant role in where you want your Porsche to go.
In the unique “Horses to Porsches” article, our very own Billy Huffnagel, Gary Labb, Dick Sartor, Morie Hively, Bruce Herrington (and me!) talk about horse power experiences and influences ranging from rodeos, cattle drives, Hollywood cowboys, impressing girlfriends and carousel manufacturing to their current (horsepower) Porsche pride and ownership. Rounding out your August Pando are App Chat, Cars and Coffee, Where’s Pando, Pfun Pfacts and so much more including the various exciting Zone 8 travel opportunities. In closing - on behalf of your Pando Team, we encourage you to make the most of the rest of your summer! Best, Marcia Salans “Every Member Has A Story” “Every Porsche Has A Story”
Speaking of adventurous, did you know many of our OCR members take the concept of horsepower quite literally?

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington
THE ART OF THE CLASSIC SPORTS CAR by Stuart Codling, photography by James Mann, published May ‘17 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN.
Clearly an ‘artsy’ book, this contains many photographs (often as two-page spreads), with only a minimum of text. There are brief introductions for the four sections: Classic Roadsters, GTs, Sporting Coupes and Race Bred. Considerable effort has been made to include interior and engine compartment shots as well as ‘portraits’. Distinct from the pictures in car books, these cars are photographed with totally plain (usually black) backgrounds, truly presented as object’s d’art, not cars in a ‘real’ world. Open this book and the phrase ‘suitable for framing’ comes immediately to mind because the full page shots are printed without borders. Be advised this book requires careful handling because the vivid black on its high quality pages is very susceptible to smudges from the oils in even freshly washed fingers. The cars covered include true classics, such as the Austin-Healey 100S, Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Ferrari 250 California, Datsun 240Z, Renault Alpine, Maserati 300S, Toyota 2000GT. In some cases, old and new classics are presented together such as MG TC and MGA, or BMW 328 and 507. Though the ‘art’ in the title would be presumed to reflect aesthetic considerations, and indeed that is the focus (pardon the expression) of the pictures, the Marcos GT is reasonably included for the engineering art of its plywood chassis. Of specific interest to Porschephiles is the extensive coverage of the 356 Speedster and the 911 Carrera RS.
The authors selected 28 vehicles for inclusion in THE ART OF THE CLASSIC SPORTS CAR. Their choice was “theirs,” and was no doubt based on personal taste as well as logistics. Some of their choices are inarguable – the 300SL is indeed a classic sports car. But with only 28 cars included out of the universe of possibilities, most every reader will be able to identify at least one glaring oversight in the selections. This reviewer’s frustration is over the absence of the Porsche 904, an iconic design, a world champion racer, and a usable car on the street. A minor complaint is the selection of the Ferrari 250 California roadster, rather than this reviewer’s favorite, the 250 GT coupe. Others will be appalled at the absence of any Cobra, though the antecedent AC Ace is included. And arguably, the absent XK120/140 Jaguars are much more classic than the included XKE and XKSS; and some will quibble over the TR4 being the ‘classic’ Triumph not the TR2/3 cars. Clearly it was ‘author’s choice’ and irrespective of selection issues, the photographic presentation is outstanding.
Each chapter starts with a detailed listing of the technical and performance specifications of the subject car(s), and a concise but comprehensive synopsis of history of the vehicles in question and the marque as a whole. Very informative overviews worthy of Wikipedia, are provided for those who did not live through, or do not remember that history. Quality printing with differing pictures on the two end papers, and tearpreventing folded edges on the dust jacket and heavyweight glossy pages, this book is a classic in its own right. THE ART OF THE CLASSIC SPORTS CAR is not a ‘Porsche Book’ but it is truly deserving of an honored place on every sports car enthusiast’s coffee table. It consists of 208, 11 x 8-1/2 inch pages, with 110 color and 53 black & white illustrations. By the time you read this it should be available for $50 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from QuartoKnows.com. August 2017 | PANDO 9

DRIVING SKILLS
Driving Vision Our OC Region is a very diverse group. We have a Concours, car rallies, a traveling and racing community. But, we all have one thing in common, we all love our Porsches, and we all belong to the Porsche driving community.
Story by Don Chapman Photos by Joe Barnet and Dennis Keller
The obvious result to improving a driver’s vision is “Look to where you want to go, not to where you don’t want to be!” The fact is, that the car will go wherever you look!
Over the past couple of months, we’ve discussed “how to drive corners fast,” and the basics of the “traction circle”. Today, we’ll be talking about the one trick guaranteed to improve your driving skills, both on the road and on the track. The trick (which isn’t simple to do), is to look ahead to the limits of your vision at all times. Most people cannot do it! As a Track (DE) and an Autocross driving instructor, I can honestly say the number one item that needs to be learned by new students is to simply look ahead. Look ahead as far as possible! At least 90% of the actions you take as a driver, are the result of what you see with your eyes as it is processed through the brain. In other words, your eyes tell the brain to control your hands, arms, legs and feet while controlling the car. What you see, after it is processed through your brain is “Vision.” Vision has been described as “the act of sensing with your eyes.” Eyesight can be simply corrected with eyeglasses. Good vision is critical in driving, and it can, and must be practiced. Simply put, looking far ahead sends important information to your brain earlier, and allows it the needed time to figure out the correct response to send those signals to your hands, arms, legs and feet. 12 PANDO | August 2017
Think about it, has the following ever happened to you? Imagine you are driving down a freeway or an open road and you suddenly see an object in your path. You immediately swerve to avoid the object but end up running smack into it. Why? Because your focus (Vision) was on the object and your car has a tendency to go where you look. Remember - Look to where you want to go, not to where you don’t want to be!
AUTOCROSS VISION For Autocross, you should be looking as far down the course as possible. To be fast, you need to look one, two, or three turns ahead. You should be paying very little or no attention to what is directly in front of the car. By looking ahead, your vision will give you early recognition of the upcoming course elements. It is far easier to prepare for a corner that you have seen (an element or two before) and know is coming. Additionally, this will also set you up to be in the correct position for next element. Looking ahead will also lessen your need to rely completely on course memorization. Many times new students look directly at the very next element they need to negotiate and are surprised when they are caught out of position to make the following turn. In Autocross, it is very easy to focus your vision on the wrong things. It’s a common mistake to focus on an apex cone and driving right at it, rather than setting up the turn for the next element. Remember - Practice is the key to disciplining our Autocross vision.
TRACK VISION The same basic Vision techniques apply on the track. The driver must be focused on where they want to be next on the track, not where they are on the track. To drive the smoothest and fastest lines on a track, your brain must receive input far
enough in advance to calculate the correct lines, steering, braking and acceleration inputs. Your vision should always be looking ahead, down the straight to the next braking point, then through the Apex point, and ahead through the corner exit, and down the track to the next element. If you’re not looking ahead, typically you’ll brake too early (the most common new driver mistake), A both RACE CAR ............. orBUILDING brake too late; of which will cause you to miss the correct turn in point, and force you to drastically reduce your speed ......................... through the corner.36 Professional drivers have spent their entire lives improving and exercising their vision on the track. No one can expect to jump in a car and drive on a track like Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel. Drivers at this level have trained their vision year after year, so the processing time necessary for them to make driving adjustments at high speeds, is almost instantaneous.
STREET VISION Improving your vision for street driving and learning to look ahead can save you from having a bad day in your Porsche. It’ll take practice for you to feel comfortable looking farther ahead than you do now. Do not just look to the car directly in front
of you, but look through, over and around the cars in front of you. Look as far down the road as possible. Work on seeing and being aware of all the vehicles around you. Use your peripheral vision to glance at the side and rear view mirrors in order to keep track of all the traffic. It’s also very important to leave plenty of room for the car in front of you. The more room the better! Not only will this larger gap for the car ahead of you give you more time to react to an emergency situation, it’ll also help to open up your field of vision down the road. Use your time in traffic to train your driving vision. Think for example, “what if a ladder flies off the truck in front of you?” Do you have an exit plan? Do you know if the lanes next to you are clear? Is the car behind you creeping up on your rear bumper leaving you enough room for you to brake in an emergency situation? Practice your driving vision to improve your situational awareness on the road. Perhaps, by simply changing lanes, you can put yourself in a much safer situation. So there you have it! Remember, to be a better driver, you need to start looking ahead. To be a much better driver, you will need to improve your driving vision.
You can start improving your driving vision today by working on the techniques mentioned anytime you are driving on the street. Now, if you’d really like to take your driving vision to the next level, we invite you to join us at our next Autocross or Drivers Education (DE) Track Event. Our amazing group of instructors will help you improve your driver’s vision, improve your reaction times, and help you become a much better driver!

Laps at Big Willow

Building A Story and Photos by Jim Salzer
ast fall, I decided to check another box on the bucket list and commit to gaining a Time Trial license. For me, how can anything be more fun than driving a 991 GT3 at high speeds on some of the west’s great tracks? I’ve been lucky enough to get time on Thermal, Sonoma, and best of all COTA during the year, but I really wanted to see if I could be time competitive in class. I ran some events and got my Time Trial license. I realized I was not only having a great time, but I wanted more. So, after a three-day track weekend at Buttonwillow this March, I started looking for a track-prepared Porsche to move my racing fun to another level. While my first instincts were to look at 911s and maybe even an older GT3, the prices to get what I wanted exceeded my budget, so I started to weigh options. I went to Vision Motorsports where owner Dwain Dement showed me everything from Boxsters to a ground up restoration build of a GT2. After wandering around the shop, the car that I kept coming back to was silver over 2006 Cayman S. It was mostly stock with the 16black, PANDO | August 2017
exception of a zero-time Vision 3.8L engine, producing just over 315-wheel horse power and 284 ft. lbs. of torque. After spending time online and on the phone looking at every Cayman race car I could, find plus talking to people around the country, I decided to buy the Cayman from Vision and have it built the way I wanted. After all, I knew I loved projects, cars, and racing, and since it wasn’t going to get better than this, I figured “let the fun begin!” My starting point was inevitable, since I’m pretty organized and I don’t even go on vacation without a spreadsheet! In order to create the car I ultimately wanted, I had to settle on a goal of what I was going to do with it when finished. Decision number one, it was going to be a dedicated track car, and not street legal when done, so everything inside needed to be stripped. Next was to build a Time Trial car that, with minor modification, would be competitive in GT4 club racing. When making up the list of components, I divided the project up into safety, mechanical, chassis, electrical, and body. So, starting with safety, once stripped out, the roll

cage was the first stage of converting the car from street to track. I’d seen a Boxster destroyed in a multi-rollover accident at Buttonwillow a few months ago, and the driver walked away because of a properly constructed roll cage. Beyond the cage, I added a halo Sparaco seat for myself and non-halo version for when I have a coach/passenger with Schroth 6 point Hans compatible Enduro harnesses. Racing in places like Willow Springs, Buttonwillow and Chuckwalla, can be really warm, so without the air conditioning, fan, and insulation, well, you get the point, so I had a Cool Shirt system installed (it’s already saved me from the high desert heat!).
added JRZ RS1 coil over shocks with external gas filled reservoirs. Handling was improved with the use of a GT3 front sway bar and Hoosier R7s on OZ Alleggerita HLT wheels. Now it was corner balanced, given a race proven aggressive alignment and weighed in wet at 2,802 lbs. I added a Getty wing and custom splitter to the front for downforce
Race Car For the mechanical, the engine is a M97 with displacement increased by .4L with Vision’s track package for higher rev tolerance, quicker oil return and added engine and oil cooling. With all that power, I needed bigger brakes, so I used AP slotted rotors with GT3 calipers and master and Pagid yellow race pads. Now it stops! I had a CAE race shifter installed for positive shifts and added electronic rev blippers to assist with my poor heal - toe skills. I don’t own a vehicle with stock exhaust, and there’s nothing sweeter than a screaming Porsche note, so a full race exhaust with a removable Laguna Seca muffler (going on next month) fits the bill. For fully adjustable bump and rebound, the chassis had a mono-ball suspension with an
The dash was upgraded to an Aim MXL2 Data Logger providing all car and driving data. It monitors engine data and signals alarms when indicated, and the integrated GPS and Aim Smarty Cam GP records video with data overlay. It detects track information and starts automatically at the start line, and also produces a wide variety of analytical reports with the car and driver’s performance (with tools to compare and evaluate driving performance). So, what’s a race car without a racing look? Boring, and I didn’t want boring, so it was back online looking at lots of color schemes and liveries. All my cars are white, but that wasn’t going to work, so I went for yellow with black. After consulting with Chris Hukill, Vision’s in-house paint and graphics guru, he turned my ideas into reality. I wanted it bright with an aggressive demeanor. Chris suggested using PMS100 Yellow which resulted in a very cool design of a bright with a black offset. Thanks Chris! The car was completed on May 18, 2017. The next day at Willow Springs, was test and tune. After the first session, I knew I’d made the right decision, and quickly fell in love. Since then, I’ve run four race days and the car’s exceptional performance and handling has helped lower my lap times without much effort. I can’t wait to really learn to drive my Cayman S 987 to its full potential, but I’m sure having a blast on my way there!

I attend as many as I can. In Arizona, I’ve competed in Law Enforcement Rodeos, Jackpot Rodeos and nonsanctioned rodeos. In my younger years, I did bull dogging where you’re on a horse, a steer comes out of a chute, you and your horse chase it, and you jump off your horse and wrestle the steer to the ground by its horns. It’s the quickest event in any rodeo. Additionally, I was involved in the Police Athletic League and Historic Charity Trail Rides. Currently, I’m involved in the annual fundraising efforts for the Buckeye, Arizona Senior Pro Rodeo. By the way, here’s a little trivia for you . . . in December 2005 while in Las Vegas for the annual National Finals Rodeo (“NFR”), as part of the Buckeye Hellzapoppin Rodeo Committee which was interviewing various rodeo acts and announcers, I met Marcia Salans, the Pando Editor . . . and to say my life has never been the same, would be an understatement!
Bruce Herrington PORSCHEPHILE:
As your monthly Pando book reviewer, I’ve always
been interested in Porsches, thanks to Road & Track. This escalated when my folks brought back a ‘57 VW Beetle from a year’s stay in Denmark. It officially became mine when I graduated college. I had an opportunity to swap-even for a ‘51 Porsche Coupe with a guy preferring the Beetle’s extra interior space and rooftop luggage rack enabling to move his worldly possessions to Florida. The ’51 coupe had the teak window sills and a crash box. I learned to really love that crash box, until I broke a clutch cable in Washington DC commuter traffic! In ‘63, an acquaintance of mine asked me to buy his “old, tired’’ ‘57 Speedster saying he wanted to buy a new race car. What he really wanted was money to elope to Colorado with a girl I had been trying to date; but I got even and started to date his ex-wife. The ‘51 coupe is still on the road, in even more authentic Kardex shape than when I had it. The Speedster isn’t currently on the road, but has been a daily driver/commuter car for various family members, and currently it’s doing its second stint as a guinea pig for a novice car painter. Since ‘63 when I bought the Speedster, I’ve managed to have at least two Porsches in my stable at all times. None have been show cars, but I’ve sort of covered the scope of Porsche design, rear engine, mid-engine and front engine; air cooled and water cooled; 4-cyl and 6-cyl. Never quite made it to the modern age of 4-door or SUV cars though. The Speedster has been raced from time to time, and several of the other cars have been autocrossed or TrackDayed. The only time I entered a PCA Concours was when I accidentally found that I had a car qualifying for an otherwise empty class!
THE COWBOY PICTURE The Cowboy picture was taken this spring when I ‘dressed up’ to attend the kick-off of the 150th anniversary year of the Chisholm Trail cattle drives. This event was held in Caldwell, Kansas, more significant to Chisholm Trail history than better known cow towns such as Dodge City and Abilene. As the first town with liquor after 250 miles of driving cattle through ‘dry’ Oklahoma, Caldwell was naturally rowdy; and as the last town the railroad reached, Caldwell endured cattle drives even after the rail-head successively passed beyond Kansas City, Abilene, Newton, Wichita and Dodge City. In its 1880’s heydays, Caldwell had a population of about 2200, and accommodated some 100,000 Longhorn cattle passing through each year. I used to do a lot of western/trail riding, and once ‘worked’ a round-up on a ranch outside of Hanksville Utah (I basically went along for the ride on their best cutting horse, chasing steers through sand hummock country) which was an experience and a half!

RIDING As a kid I did a lot of reading, Tom Swift, the Hardy Boys (even a few Nancy Drew) and a lot of Cowboy and Indian shoot-em-ups. Always an animal lover, the westerns turned me on to horses. There was a horse rental place some 10 miles away from my home and I spent a lot of Saturdays, and a few summer weeks there. I focused on western saddles and ‘trail riding’. The trails wended over the river and through the woods of up-State New York, and eventually I was deemed qualified to go exploring wherever I wanted to go. In those days, that part of the state was mostly patches of woods and abandoned farms. I developed a great rapport with the horse I rode most, and one fall day when I misplaced my gloves, I rode for an extended period, here and there and ‘round about’, without ever having to take my hands out of my jacket pockets. The summer after graduating High School, a friend of mine (a western history buff) took off for the Southwest in a Jeep (2wd) Station wagon. He wanted to explore an outlaw hideout, and we had to go to a ranch and rent horses; but, prior to renting horses, we had to participate in (or pass muster on) a ‘round up’. This ‘ranch’ consisted of a house, a garage/outbuilding, a well, a horse tank, plus access to ‘a million’ acres under the ‘Taylor Grazing Act of 1934’. If you wanted to eat, you had to round it up! That first evening, we experienced a bunch of horses charging in to quench a 24-hour thirst at the horse tank. Four horses were selected for the next day’s activities, haltered and tied up for the night. The next morning, the four horses, the boss man, the kid (my buddy) and
I hopped a truck and drove across the plains to where some cattle were. We unloaded the horses, saddled up and started to round up the cattle so one could be cut out to be meat for the next month. My friend wasn’t a good rider and was put on a ‘gentle’ horse, while I was put on what they considered to be their best cutting horse. Eventually we herded 6 or 8 steers back to the area of the truck; the selected one was pushed/shoved/prodded onto the truck bed, and then we loaded the four horses into the same truck bed. I guess the horses were comfortable with this, but I wasn’t and neither was the steer. Back at the ranch that evening, the truck was unloaded; the horses released to water up and head for the range, the beef shot, and that was our dinner! The next day’s ride out to the hideout was spectacular and awesome, those horses happily went places I’d been hesitant to go on foot. The ‘hideout’ was clearly a last resort, attractive only when a posse was getting close. After the experience on the ranch, I returned to New York State and became acquainted with some of the principals of the Morgan Horse Association. On several occasions I rode what was then considered to be the most direct living descendant of Justin Morgan’s horse. I then acquired my first Porsche and have not been on horseback since!

We were both closet cowboys at the time and I still am. I have chaps, bridle and six shooters with a great cowboy fedora, boots and Levi’s. Well, we lived in La Crescenta, considered mountainous territory, and I was on the horse that wanted to return to the stable while I was on a steep mountain slope, I slid off my horse’s neck onto the ground, and her rear hoof struck me in the right temple. Everything came out OK but maybe that’s why I’m a little crazy today.

y first Porsche was a brand new 1989 944, Velvet Red. M I owned it 6 years. My second was a 2007 Cayman Meteor
Grey purchased as a Certified Pre Owned (“CPO”) in 2011 and owned it for 4 years. My third was a really primo 1988 911 Targa, Grand Prix White. Bought in 2012 and owned it 2 years. In late 2014 I bought my current Porsche, a 2015 Cayman GTS, and it’s Racing Yellow. In my mind, Patty and I met many years ago on the junior rodeo circuit. Patty was known as “Calamity Patty” and I was known as “Billy the Little Kid.” Our riding and shooting skills brought us worldwide fame. We also amassed quite a fortune and invested well. We were able to retire at a very young age and settled into a comfortable and quiet life in the OC. Our passion now is Porsches not horses . . . And of course, each other.

PORSCHEPHILE: 1967 Porsche 912 and a 1987 Porsche Carrera Targa. y brother and I were always playing cops and robbers, Mcowboys and Indians, or Army. As far as I can remember
(this was a long time ago in April 1951), this was a day trip out to Corriganville and Crash Corrigan was there. I always liked going on pony rides but didn’t know many people with horses growing up. When I was in college, one of my friends inherited a ranch outside of Porterville and invited me up there. We went horseback riding and all of a sudden the horse was jumping over a ten foot wide stream. When I landed, Brett was laughing and said “I forgot to tell you he’s a jumper.” I think initially it was the most fear I ever had riding a horse, then it turned into a good feeling that I actually stayed on the horse! I went from that type of horsepower to the horsepower at drag strips, driving both a 1966 Ford Mustang and a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner through the lights. A friend had a gas dragster and asked me if I wanted to try that out at Lion’s Drag Strip. I started going through the licensing process and fortunately was on my intermediate run when my brakes and parachute failed. All I could see was the barrier across the end of the runoff area coming up really quickly. Fortunately, I came to a stop just short of the metal barrier. I decided at that point that God was telling me I was playing with too much horsepower and that was my last ride in a dragster. Several years later I switched to my lower horsepower 1967 Porsche 912 and thirty-four years later got my higher horsepower 1987 Porsche Carrera Targa. I like the current horses I have in my garage. They don’t cost me a lot in food and I don’t have to look at my boots to see if I stepped in anything before walking into the house.

mother’s side, I come from a very famous Owoodn mycarving family that created carousels. All I
ever wanted was my own pony, but I remember my parents and grandparents saying “can’t you be happy surrounded by all of these life-size wooden horses? ” As a little girl, I idolized Roy Rogers and Trigger and entered numerous cereal contests to win a pony, and as a teen, I even entered the Kentucky Club tobacco contest to win a thoroughbred (Don’t ask how I got the tobacco package ...) Never mind that we lived in a rented house. I figured after my pony and I walked to school every day, he’d walk back home and would live inside our rented house in Santa Monica next to our washing machine. I didn’t get the pony, but always kept the dream as I graduated, received degrees and climbed the Corporate Ladder. Fast forward to 1997 and I finally found the pony of my dreams in Westminster in a pasture behind a preschool. Buying him is a story and a half and very Disney-esque, but the short version is I lost him
during the initial process and then finally found him again. His name is Peanut and since 1998 he’s the smallest palomino pony with a long white mane and tail living at the public 400+ Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center. Rain or shine I see him twice daily to feed, muck out his stall and take leisurely walks side-by-side. Of all the horses, Peanut and I get the most visitors and we always take them on a tour of the Center. The little children really enjoy brushing him and learning about safety around horses. Dick Sartor (yes, that Dick Sartor) and I enjoy giving each child a free pony coloring book. What’s truly gratifying are young adults visiting with their family saying “Remember me, Marcia? I visited you and Peanut a long time ago, and now I’m bringing MY children to see you and Peanut.” So from wooden horses to the real thing; I guess you could say I’m Geppetto and Peanut is Pinocchio. Hold onto your dreams, they do come true; either getting a pony or a Porsche! August 2017 | PANDO 25

Le Mans
It was survival of the fittest with Porsche winning their 19th 24-Hours of Le Mans in June. The winning Porsche 919 Hybrid had spent extensive time in the pits to come from behind in the final hours. The atmosphere at Le Mans is special, and the race has a special place in Porsche history. The first overall win almost was in 1969, and after 24 hours - Porsche lost by less than 400 feet to a Ford GT40. It was 1970 that sealed the first overall win with the iconic 917. There have been great Porsche rivalries: with Ford, Ferrari, Renault, Jaguar, Peugeot and Audi. There have also been famous cars: the Carrera RSR, 935 “Moby Dick,” 956 and 962, GT3, and now the 919.
The winning #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid.

Porsche’s Shined Brigh On Saturday, June 17, 2017, beginning with the opening
notes of the “The Star-Spangled Banner,” sung a cappella by professionally trained opera singer David Blair, to the exhaust echoes of the last Porsche leaving Fountain Valley’s Mile Square Park, the 47th annual edition of Porsche in the Park was an enjoyable experience for all who attended. More than 100 Porsches were on hand at our recent white glove Concours and Porsche display, including some of the latest models, vintage cars and racecars. More than 30 cars were judged in six divisions. A complete list of awards and recipient’s photos are identified on pages 36-39 in the Pando. Six creative picnic entries also took the field, with Bunny and Jim Falk earning first place for their Mexican-inspired theme. A large assortment of Porsche-themed merchandise was available for purchase at our club’s Goodie Store.
Following a stirring color guard presentation by Fountain Valley Boy Scout Troop 412, and the singing of our National Anthem, Fountain Valley Mayor John Collins cordially welcomed our PCA-OCR club back to Mile Square Park and Jim Saenz won the Mayor’s Trophy with his 1984 black Carrera.

Cone Zone Update by Rob Greene / Photo by Gary Labb
Thank you to all who have participated in the previous cone zone series. We hope it has added to the enjoyment of the Breakfast Club meeting at Original Mike’s. We’ll continue color exercise, model types and different types of equipment. A special thank you to everyone who provided ideas for this third color zone series.
The plan for the monthly Cone Zone themes follows: • August: All Cabriolets • September: All fixed rear wing Porsches (includes whale-tails, duckbills, Tequipment, aftermarket, GT-2, GT-3, auto-crossers etc.) • October: Any Porsches with 15” – 17” diameter wheels • November: Any Porsches with 18” diameter wheels • December: Any Porsches with 19” diameter wheels • January 2018: No Porsche Alley Cone Zone – Attend the OCR Brunch! • February 2018: Any Porsche with 20” and up diameter wheels
Cone Zone Themes
We hope August 2017 - February 2018 is self-explanatory. For August anyone with a Cabriolet can park in the Cone Zone. What better month to show off the topless group than August? September should provide a lot of different looks, from earlier Porsche whale tails to au currant GT-3 and 4 wings, original or after-market. Then the multitude of Porsche and non-Porsche wheel types displayed in October-December 2017 and February 2018 for all to see. I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions.

RICE’S
Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice
Porsche at Le Mans 2017 First up, old business. How did our mark do at Le Mans? Porsche was victorious at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2017 as Brendon Hartley, Timo Bernhard and Earl Bamber claimed the win on Sunday.
Do you, want to see the real story, results, tire skidding accounts, door banking action: Official ACO FIA WEC results 06-18-2017:

In part: Aston Martin driver, Jonathan Adam, made his move into Arnage, the slowest corner on the track. He made light contact with the #63 Corvette and grabbed the lead, but he couldn’t hold onto it and lost the position before the next corner. The contact, however, created a slow puncture for the Corvette, and though Taylor was able to keep Adam behind him for a lap and a half, he finally lost control as the two went to take the white flag. Adam is joined on the top step of the illustrious GTE-Pro podium by teammates Daniel Serra and Aston Martin stalwart Darren Turner. The #67 Ford GT would ultimately end up second, with that late puncture pushing the #63 Corvette C7.R down to a final finishing position of third, and so on. Porsche super high tech-no-electro – computer-robo-ized racer WON!
Porsche 919 in winners circle
What is a real “GT car”
The super 911 mid motor(?) . . . The ‘funny car’ was unremarkable. Shoving the motor in the 914 position, accomplished nothing but made room for the silly whisk broom-looking “diffuser” that hung off the back end of the “911 race car,” all to create more down force, . . . all that for nothing that works on street and road cars?! I was asked what is a real ”GT car” some time ago. It is an ongoing thing, like what is a real “Sports Car,” and that sort of thing. I got my first real sports car when I got my first 36 payments and used 1962 Corvette. That was a real car with a special (and good looking) engine I took pride in. It had polished aluminum and nicely cleaned parts. It looked like a musical instrument in an orchestra; all shinny and purposeful, it made sounds, beautiful sounds! It was a sports car as far as I was concerned, a real machine.
Back then, a ’real sports car’ had cranky engines that disliked slow driving or more proper: “Unsporting driving” with few synchronized transmissions or partly so, had water leaking and wind howling canvas tops that buttoned up part way, in rain or all the way around when parked outside for night. There were no roll up windows, that kind of thing was for a luxury car. But, Corvettes had roll up windows, automatic transmissions, manual transmissions with synchronizers, and hard tops if wanted, so I was already in jeopardy. But the manual close ratio 4 speed transmission and Duntov high performance cams, made it sports enough, especially with two 4 Bbl. Carburetors or Fuel injection, and even more glorious music. Porsche at that time looked like a kind of odd, short, half of a potato looking car. However, as soon as one fired up, that was like a rattle snake’s rattle. August 2017 | PANDO 43
Ferrari 250
That sound . . . they sounded like a real machine. Nothing phony about those nasty, snarly exhausts, and those twin carburetors growling in the back end. I was clearly warned: “You can take ’em on the straights, but beware on the curves!!!” Everyone had to learn the hard way, get humiliated at least once or twice, and then you knew Porsches ruled the curves! Back in the mid ‘60s I wanted the real thing, a Colombo V-12 cylinder Ferrari . . . ahhhhh the real deal! I made a tentative deal later on for a beat up 250 repainted black over a yellow coupe. It looked tired and worn, but it had that Colombo V-12 and it that was glorious enough. I was warned it eats rings, so use good oil and be gentle ‘til she is warm (all Ferrari’s are girls to most owners). However, that deal never came to pass.
Colombo V-12 Ferrari
But back to a point I was trying to make earlier: What is a GT anyway? I sort of got off track. The original idea for a “GT racing series,” was for a production car like the 911 to race with limited modifications, and race what was actually built from the production line. Everyone got into the game of upgrading and deleting weight, to a point where they were hardly recognized from the real cars. Some even becoming radical tube-frame race cars, getting far away from a real “GT Car.”
general statement of refinement and a very nice way to travel by car, compared to a “beater” or “heap.” Most of us know about those. Mr. Ferrari loved to race, so he built high-performance road cars to pay for it. One of the most well known was a Ferrari 250, a small two seat car with a fabulous Colombo designed V-12 engine. Oh the glorious sounds and blur of speed it gave! It was refined with leather and luxury appointments for those who would pay for a somewhat civilized race car, but it was a real GRAND TOURING experience!
I guess it was all OK as my brother kept pestering me about the newer Porsche, the 911 with that “Formula Onesounding engine” A German engine that doesn’t break! “OH, really?!” And so Porsche came into my world, and there was another thing to test the merits of this new Porsche: IMSA American Road Racing. The Porsche and its 911, would get a real test right here on our home tracks.

TECHNICAL ISSUE ON THE 911/930:
So what was Porsche doing about the Ferrari? Butzi was busy thinking out the new 911, and a road and racing GT car. That’s what!
So now today, we have on the horizon a new Porsche, yet again. A New 911, a new 911 Turbo, actually a new 911 Turbo GT2, actually a GT-2 RS!
The electrical fuse over-heating problem is now resolved on my evolution 911.
And what did the clever son of Ferry Porsche come up with? A Porsche 904 GTS, that’s what!
Will it now, finally be sent to honor the hood badge on its nose and show the world what a real Porsche GT can do?
I went to an extreme upgrade of replacing the entire front and rear electrical panels.
A Glass Fiber Resin, over steel frame chassis mid-engine sport and road car that won on the track and road. Ferdinand Alexander (Butzi) showed the world you didn’t have to have a V-12 or even a V-8 to succeed in racing or a road car. It is still one of the most sought after, most beautiful, most 100% FUNCTIONAL machines ever built-ever! And it was appropriately titled “GT” and the S is EARNED for its winning in a “Super” manner!
Will the new bruiser on the collector block, do the same on the track?
I also replaced .ALL O.E.M. fuse systems with ATO blade fuses, all 21ea. in front, and 3 ea. in the engine compartment. I used 4 ea. BLUE SEA 6-gang marine salt water grade ATO fuse panels with screw ring terminals on all terminals and wires. NO more stuffing all kinds of small, medium, and large wires in those little holes, and screwing down the set screw and hoping they are all in good contact and secure. THAT’S OVER! Next month a much simpler replacement for the high load fuses for all 911 & 930s.
We can only hope . . .
GTS interior no silly carbon frills.
