Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.
The Macan S.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Barry Michaels
Flashback To 1978. mutual friends associated with the Grand Prix Region. Sue inquired whether or not we’d like the trophy back for our archives and I jumped at the chance to recapture this tangible part of our history, which we proudly displayed at our annual concours in June. Please join me in extending gratitude to Sue for thinking of us, and to Skip and Suesan Carter for facilitating the delivery of the trophy into our hands.
D
o you remember what you were doing during the summer of 1978? While I do remember what I was doing that summer, I also recognize some of you weren’t even alive in 1978. If you fall into that later category, trust me when I tell you forty years can go by very quickly (at least in hindsight). In any case, OCR was recently given the opportunity to flashback to the summer of 1978, at which time the White Glove Concours de’elegance judges awarded top honors (pictured) to a 550 Spyder owned and prepared by Ron Ramage, an active member of the Los Angeles Region since the 1960’s. Sue Ramage, Ron’s widow, recently reached out to OCR through Skip and Suesan Carter,
Ron bought the 550 in the early 1970’s for about $2,000 and spent the next 15 years restoring the car. Ron was a graphic designer who became a Porsche salesman, including employment with Circle Porsche, our primary Concours sponsor. Evidently Ron was such a good salesman he sold himself a 356 Speedster, a 914-6, 912, 944 and 911R over the years in addition to the 550. Ron was the founding member of the Grand Prix Region (Long Beach). My understanding is Ron sold the 550 in the early 1990’s and used the proceeds to buy a bed & breakfast inn in Port Townsend, Washington. There are a couple take-aways here. First, PCA is filled with great folks and the friends made in our club can last the rest of your life. Secondly, keep your Porsche well-maintained and polished and you too may someday own a bed & breakfast inn. I guess the caveat in that last point is to buy the right Porsche in the first place. In any case, kudos to Mark Wallace and the concours committee members and volunteers for putting on another successful event, with 150 cars displayed during the day. Steve Fairbanks and Karen Nedza recruited a team of judges, timers and runners from several regions to accommodate the many judged cars, while Marcia Salans headed our discerning “picnic display” judging team.
As we enter the last full month of summer we kick-off what is arguably the busiest period for all things Porsche. Please see the events section of our website for information on our many region activities, including the second-half of our autocross and DE events. National events include Werks Reunion (Monterey) Aug. 24, Treffen Banff Sept. 12-16, Rennsport Reunion Sept. 27-30, pre-opening opportunities for PCA members at the LA Auto Show, and Tech Tactics West in December. Also mark your calendars for the next Porsche Parade (July 2019), which will be held at the Waldorf Astoria Boca Raton Resort & Club (Florida). Above all, get out and drive. The road awaits!

LETTERFrom the Editor y our August Pando celebrates our PCA-
OCR family enjoying everything our southern California summer has to offer! Highlighted in this issue is our club’s marque event – this year’s 48th PCAOCR Annual White Glove Concours, so please check it out. This year’s terrific event, blessed by cool breezes and a great crowd of family, friends and visitors; enthusiastically enjoyed all things Porsche, from gorgeous cars to Goodie Store unique apparel and of course the very serious (?!) picnic competition.
Story and Photos by Marcia Salans
Next up, share a totally unbelievable ‘once in a lifetime dream’ where as an employee, you enter and win your company contest sending you and a guest to LeMans. That’s exactly what happened to PCA-OCR’s Monica Asbury who won an all-expense paid trip; so, join Monica and Denny as they enjoyed the amazing sights and sounds of spectacular LeMans. Rounding out this issue is our “Where’s Pando?” section. We’re seeing more and more member entries of members taking Pando to incredible destinations. Isle of Man, anyone? Our PCA-OCR continues to be incredibly fortunate to have and share so many opportunities getting together and enjoying
all that So Cal and Porsche ownership offers. Whether it’s breakfast at Original Mike’s, Cars and Coffee at Enderle, Burger Bahn, Mod Pizza in south county, or Woody’s Lido – check out our AugustJanuary calendar of events. Also, don’t forget about the New Members Picnic, Treffen-Banff, AX – and for our younger family members, check out joining PCA for Juniors. As always, please remember to support our wonderful sponsors (Porsche Riverside and Circle Porsche) and our advertisers. I recently visited our newest advertiser, European Collectibles, was warmly greeted and enjoyed seeing the beautiful Porsches below. So, enjoy our endless days and summer nights, grill and chill, surf and sand, Laguna Pageant of the Masters or driving PCH or the Ortega Highway. Relax and enjoy the Porsche journey! #24hrsoflemonica Story and Photos by Monica Asbury
I
t started with an email on May 15th, “24 Hours of LeMans Race” Do you want to go? As I continued to read the email from SiriusXM, it said, “you must submit an essay as to why you should be the one selected over the other 2499 employees.” Thinking my biggest contest competition might be the SiriusXM male employees’ entries, Denny suggested I submit his LeMans recollection - when he was 20 years old, at LeMans for the race, imbibed too much resulting in him passing out under an abandoned VW Van and waking up after the race was over - he never saw the race! I thought to myself, well, that’s not going into my essay! I want to win! Looking for a unique angle, I wrote I was going to experience LeMans from a female’s perspective, and I’d ask the driver’s ‘hard’ hitting questions like, “Are you married, do you have a girlfriend, what’s your favorite color, etc.” Unbelievably, on Thursday, May 30th, I was notified I’d won an all-expense-paid trip for two to LeMans! It was indeed a trip of a lifetime! We were provided with a chauffeur, a very small room in LeMans with a delicious breakfast buffet, and only a 20-minute ride to the track from our hotel in our Mercedes Benz limo. The Chauffeur was like having a butler, at our beck and call, any time of the day/night.
u
Thursday night we picked up our credentials and became familiar
with the suite/garage and track. u
u
Friday, we spent little time at the track as the Driver’s Parade was the ‘big deal’ of the day, and Corvette’s Racing Team had a ‘special’ Hospitality Platform where we had a front row seat. Saturday, we arrived at the track at 10:00 a.m., and left at 2:00 a.m.
(it was hard to leave) u
Sunday back at the track at 9:00 a.m. until the end
of the race at 3:00 p.m. I’m not sure I can adequately describe the incredible, amazing gift we had being included as part of the Corvette Racing Team. They were the only team with a double-wide hospitality suite, access to both Corvette garages, Cars #63 and #64, mingling with drivers, their families, and the crew, as well as being part of the pre-grid walk.

We saw all the cars and were fortunate to be next to the Gulf Porsche Garage, where the crew was pretty friendly. Yes, I approached the entire LeMans experience from a female perspective and asked the hard-hitting questions I’d mentioned in my contest entry. Denny did the filming, and I enjoyed posting on the PCA-OCR App and Instagram for a “you are there LeMans experience!”
Saturday’s photo opp during Pre-Grid. “Winner, Winner” Porsche Pig!
We were outfitted with Corvette Racing Team attire, and at midnight on Saturday, were taken to exclusive inside-the-track corners with only high-security VIP credentialed access; Indianapolis, House des Hunaudieres (where champagne is served to guests to watch the race) and Porsche Curve. The roar and thunder from the race cars was unbelievable! You could immediately identify the Corvettes vs the Porsches and the prototypes by their engines. Everybody, regardless of what time of the night or morning, were driving really hard, fast and LOUD! They were in it to win! Car #64 blew a head gasket at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning, while the #63 car finished the race and due to a technicality on the Ford Team, inched up to finish 4th. Please, we have not changed our allegiance to Corvettes. The “Porsche Pig” held on to win and I was happy to have been able to capture its photo on the pre-grid including the stuffed pig placed on the roof. While on the pre-grid, a couple from Canada approached me as the lady noticed my Porsche earrings - She wanted to buy a pair! Ha, join the OCR! LeMans was spectacular! We had first class accommodations for the entire 6 days of the trip and treated like VIPs. SiriusXM sent us to Paris for a couple of days after the race. Moral of this story, even if you don’t think you’ll win – enter the contest! Now to convince SiriusXM to sponsor Porsche’s Racing Team! Instagram: 24hrsoflemonica

In Fact: We seem to be swamped with reports, latest news, internet and even “fake news” all proclaiming the heralded arrival of automated, self-operating, “Cars.” You’ve heard it before, ‘ya know, to do all the “driving for us.” I get the impression there is an out-of-breath population that can’t stand waiting for this miracle of technology to take over?
QUESTION: Since you reported on using a Garrett GT35R Turbocharger for a while now, how does it work? Answer: “SWELL! I made several other accompanying modifications for the GT35R turbocharger on my 3.6 turbo engine. ( Photos by Lee Rice )
I can understand the interest. And sure it is interesting, but what we have seen in FACT is these things running into pedestrians, bicycles, other cars, trucks, mailboxes, fire hydrants, utility poles, houses . . . no point going further. What itches my backside is the selfproclaimed notion that battery cars are totally environmentally friendly, clean, and the future for all of us. This is proclaimed to be the only way we’ll go anywhere in the future. REALLY? Well there is some possible truth among all the hype, but again, we go back to the laws of physics and the fact that just off shore from Huntington Beach’s Edison plant is another empty VLCC headed back for more. What you ask is a V.L.C.C.? Very Large Crude Carrier. And it is going back for more crude OIL. Something has to generate the electrical power for those zillions of soldered together flash light-sized batteries under the floor of those electro vehicles. Just in time for the 4th of July. Recently, one of those vehicles made a spectacular fire show on network news recently. Thank Heavens the operator and passengers got out when warned by another driver. And of course, gasoline vehicles have caught fire and burned up too.
Rice’s Ramblings: Ask a Mechanic If you have a question about your Porsche, please send in your question to Lee at: riceturbos@sbcglobal.net
Stainless oil to turbo line.
Answer: For one thing, the ball-bearing turbocharger uses far less oil to lubricate and cool the compressor-turbine shaft, so I made a smaller stainless steel oil line from the engine to the turbo charger. I installed one of those form fit, titanium weave heat shields to keep heat off the rear bumper, rear Porsche red reflector and its internal fog lights. It works great. I reported on oil leaks from the turbocharger to the scavenge oil pump and I ended up making a smaller stainless oil line welded onto a new banjo to the scavenge pump. NO LEAKS. And it all looks neater. So how does the GT35R drive, compared to the KKK K-27-7200? #1 It spools up quicker and that is one of the first things I noticed. It spools up sooner when it’s hot outside. And it seems to have more boost power up near 7,000 rpm. Power actually drops off past 6,500 with standard 964 cams; however, it still keeps accelerating! Things happen awful darn quickly at that W.O.T. (Wide Open Throttle).
GT35r Compressor
It is only up in 4th gear where you can really observe this, but the speeds come up so incredibly QUICK, you need a co-pilot to note readings. And for real, it is actually not that much fun. This is gear up, climb power, props back speeds. Enough said. Oh, one last interesting thing, the Garrett compressor has a swirl pattern that grabs more air pressure each compressor turn, so it grabs and pushes more air pressure turn than the KKK. And doesn’t heat it up as much. On shutdown, just like a turbojet engine, it takes a while to spools down from idle. It takes about 90 seconds, as the ball-bearing turbo spins really, really, really free. Cone Zone Update Cone Zone Grand Reopening by Rob Greene
The OCR Porsche Alley CONE ZONE emerges from hiatus with a patriotic fanfare at the Club’s July 7th Breakfast Meeting by featuring RED WHITE & BLUE Porsches. Although this restart marks the fourth annual series of monthly cone zone adventures, those of you Porsche fanatics who have joined PCA’s Orange Coast Region in the past few months may be wondering, “Where is Porsche Alley and what is an OCR Cone Zone?” A little over three years ago, with a slightly twisted PCA slogan, “It’s the cars with the people,” we began a new feature at our monthly breakfast meetings: One row of parking stalls (hence, the “Alley”) at Original Mike’s was coned off with slightly-used orange traffic cones donated by PCA-OCR’s Autocross (thanks!). Parking in this zone of cones is reserved for a designated class of Porsche or driver that varies from month-to-month. Our first series highlighted different models of Porsche, our second series focused on color to determine which VIP (very important Porsche) would get Cone Zone parking preference. The most recent series included color exercises, a model type, and different types of equipment on fabulous Porsches. In addition to the traditional
RED WHITE and BLUE colors for last July, we featured fixed rear wings, various wheel sizes, all cabriolets, and even no-cones parking by color sorting (think Skittles, M&Ms, or gum drops in color groups!) Yes, we are a fun-loving bunch. The plan for the new monthly Cone Zone themes follows, and special thanks to members who provided some great ideas! • JULY – Red, White, and Blue. The single or multiple color of your Porsche, of course, gets Zone parking preference (a Cone Zone rule: You are the only judge of the color of your Porsche, the factory color name can also assist). • AUGUST – High-Mileage Porsches with about 175,000 or more miles on the frame/body from the factory. Restorations OK. Not too many garage queens in this zone. • SEPTEMBER – All 914 models. Tell your friends.
• OCTOBER – Ladies day! If you are into autocross, concours, rallies, tours; or it’s your daily driver, weekend driver, or you just sit in the garage and stare at your lovely car, this cone’s for you. • NOVEMBER – Autocross cars. Streetable or trailered. Class winners or just a number on the door. • DECEMBER – Holiday Red and Holiday Green Porsches (still your call on the color, but Lime Green? Really?) • JANUARY – No Porsche Alley Cone Zone--- Attend the PCA - OCR Annual Member Brunch! • FEBRUARY – Air-cooled engines. Park head-in and open those lids! • MARCH – Water-cooled engines. Park head-in and let’s see what you have!
I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions and additions.
