Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Barry Michaels
Faster than a Speeding Bullet. No, I’m not thinking about Superman, but rather how quickly summer comes and then goes. August is the last full month of summer; my vote is we take advantage of the long days to do as much driving as we can on lightly-traveled, long stretches of road. July provided ample opportunities to engage with fellow OCR members at both driving and social events. As expected, Larry Moore’s “Lunch on Top” tour was a great event as was Porsche Parade in Boca Raton. Yes, it was muggy, but there is just something extra special about an event that draws 1,000 plus Porsche cars and nearly double that number of enthusiasts. Traditionally Parade will include both TSD and Gimmick Rallies, Autocross, Concours, and Tech Quiz competitions, but for me the most enjoyable opportunities are found in the unique tours and social events. Those events provide ample opportunities to meet new and old friends from the 145 regions across North America. The 2020 Parade will be much closer to home at the La Quinta Resort.
While the PCA-mania of Porsche Parade provided an annual Porsche “fix” for some, August 16 provides an opportunity for an additional Porsche “fix” at the Werks Reunion Monterey. If you’re a fan of classic cars, Werks falls within the middle of Monterey Car Week, which kicks off August 9. Next month we will continue with our Autocross series in Fontana, which we jointly organize with the Riverside Region and with the primary sponsorship of Porsche Riverside. Our June AX event quickly sold out as the word spread regarding the quality of the event, which focused on giving every driver lots of track time relative to other AX events. Moreover, corner workers, breakfast, and lunch (for drivers) are included as part of the registration fees. Treffen Vermont will be held in early September, with a halfdozen OCR members expected to attend. The next Treffen North America will be in Colorado Springs in April.
is changing from being sports-car centric to a broader base, and we want to build relevant activities and events in response to that changing demographic. Please note, this fall our Nominating Committee will be vetting candidates for the 2020 OCR Board, with the expectation member voting will occur in November so that the new Board members can be announced in early December versus waiting for the annual banquet, as had been done in recent years. The current President, Vice President, and Treasurer terms end December 31, 2019. Details will follow this fall through our e-mailer program as well as in Pando.

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington
Racing & Recipes The Racing Cookbook by Jürgen Barth and Rudiger Mayer, published 2017 by rmp Rudiger Mayer, Reutlingen Germany. Few books can be said to be a book for everybody, but this is a book for cooks as well as for gearheads / sportscar drivers. As Amazon / Books puts it: “Porsche factory racer and Le Mans winner Jürgen Barth is a great chef as well as a great driver. This unique book brings you 24 of his best recipes cleverly intertwined with his biography, including excellent period photos of his wins. It’s all here: pasta, seafood, steaks, soup, omelets, salads, even a dessert. If you like Porsches and [or] like to cook, this is the book for you”. Jürgen Barth (son of Formula 1 and Sportscar driver Edgar Barth) was at the epicenter of Porsche’s racing activity from the time he joined the Zuffenhausen as an Engineer in 1966 until he retired four decades later after an illustrious career as an executive with Porsche. As a driver for Porsche, he made thirteen Le Mans 24-hour appearances, a record unsurpassed by any other driver with a single make. He drove Porsches to wins in the 1977 Le Mans, and in the 1980 1000KM of Nürburgring. Racing & Recipes contains twentyfour “Chapters;” each highlighting in international race track / race (and the exploits of Jürgen Barth there), and including a recipe which the author associates with that track / event. The history of the track itself is summarized, and some excellent photos are included. Some of the tracks discussed are no-longer in common use, and some of the events described are ‘vintage’ events run in the 2000s with Porsches from as far back as the ‘50s.
Tracks covered range from Laguna Seca and Daytona in the US to Shanghai and Zhuhai in China, with Le Mans, Nürburgring, Targa Florio and Kyalami, etc., along the way. The cars shown range from 550 and 924 through 911s to 917, 934/5, 956, etc. Most dishes are generally appropriate to the venue – an Avocado Dish for Laguna Seca; a noodle soup for Shanghai; a pasta dish for Vallelunga outside of Rome. Some of the recipes are rather complex with multiple accessory ingredients and a wide array of spices supporting a ‘simple’ entre such as steak or fish. On the other hand, the ‘cooking’ per se is rather rudimentary, largely stove-top efforts with no elaborate cooking facilities or equipment required. Cultural differences must be allowed for when using the recipes in Racing & Recipes. Metric measurements (grams and degrees C) are used throughout. Also, references to ‘onion’ (without specifying White, Red, Brown, Vidalia, etc.) and “fresh chili pepper,” can mean lots of different things to
different people, especially residents of the American Southwest. Recipe components “4 leaves of gelatin,” “Alpine Cheese,” “handful of Chervil” etc., may cause some scratching of American heads, as may the subject of “Aioli.” Other specifications, such as “250 g of pork lard” may offend modern American sensibilities. Photographs of completed dishes are exquisite, with racing paraphernalia and model race cars included for ‘atmosphere;’ even a ventilated brake disk used as a trencher under a dish of Fettuccine! There are also one-page treatises on special ingredients like Noodles + Rice, Types of Salt, Cooking Oils, various chilies, etc. Racing & Recipes is hardbound, with glossy cover and no dust jacket. There are 160 9x9 inch pages printed on heavyweight glossy paper with many photos, and indices of drivers / races / Porsches and recipes / components. 2019 Pors
The Spring of 2018 offered a real challenge to the newly formed
Concours Team. After several successful concours held at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, the decision was made to search for a new venue for the 2019 OCR Concours. Our task was to locate a site, if possible, in central Orange County, and most importantly it must have a grass field. We immediately began our search, making calls and site visits to Seal Beach, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Tustin, and Lake Forest; all to no avail. Either car shows were not allowed on their grass fields or since we were working with a tight budget, we were quoted out of our price range. Finally, in September, one of our Club members, Mark Beuhler, through a contact he had with the City of Dana Point, let us know that Sea Terrace Park was available in June 2019 and the site problem was solved! The early morning sky of Concours Day was gray and the previous day, while Field Marshall Bob Kahn and his volunteer team were marking the field, we experienced periods of light drizzle. However, as Concours Day progressed, we enjoyed a beautiful day with no drizzle, much to the delight of all the owners of those perfectly detailed Porsches in the judged group. A new OCR record was set for pre-registration, with a total of 156 people pre-registering combined with over 90 additional cars entering on the

day of the event for a total of over 230 cars on the field throughout the day! Opening ceremonies began promptly at 9:00 a.m. with our Master of Ceremonies, Sandy Schwartz introducing a USMC Color Guard from Camp Pendleton. As the Colors were being presented, Ms. Sheri Vasquez, with a beautiful voice, sang our National Anthem. Joe Muller, Dana Point Mayor; was next with his welcoming comments. Our Club President, Barry Michaels, presented an award of appreciation to Michelle Larsson, representing Circle Porsche, for her support and for Circle Porsche’s contributions to our Club activities. I presented a “Porsche Excellence” Award to Johnnie Mansfield, Head of Marketing for PIRCH, for their generous sponsorship. After the Judge’s meeting was over, the judges went to locate their assigned cars. There was an OCR record number of judged entries, 48 Porsches, registered in the judged group which included 356’s, and 2019 models. As the judging continued, spectators walked the field admiring the many different models on display, including a special “914 Corral” set up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic 914 Porsche. Those that were hungry took advantage of the Taco Stand, where three different flavors of delicious tacos were sold. Chef Zamora and her 11- year-old son, Sebastian, did an outstanding job servicing the hungry crowd. The picnic competition set a new record for entrants this year and proved to be a very popular attraction as people walked by admiring the many varied creative ways entrants displayed their picnic displays. The eagerly awaited Awards Ceremony drew a large crowd as trophies were presented to the various class and division winner by Head Judge, Steve Fairbanks. There was a total of 48 Concours Entrants and 47 showed up with one no-show. There were 3 on-field challenges before judging started which required changes / additions in both Division and Class; which was a bit unusual and resolved to the entrant’s satisfaction between Dick Douglass (Zone 8 Concours CoChair), myself, and the owner. Congratulations to Chuck Bartron, the winner of the Joe Nedza / Mayor’s Trophy. Two of the more unusual cars were a 1971 911-T Black Sportomatic owned by Guy Finlan, and a 1955 Silver 550 Spyder that was #75 in production, and valued at around $4M from European Collectibles, entered by Tim Rivera. 14 PANDO | August 2019 14 PANDO | August 2019

Winners: Picnic Contest
1st Place : Pam and Tom Gray Display Name/Theme:
Proudly Pink
Inspiration:
Pam and Tom (mostly Pam) incorporated just about anything and everything pink into her spectacular, masterfully well-thought out ‘delicious’ Proudly Pink display, from her pink ‘basket,’ to flamingos frolicking off to the side, right down to the edibles on their picnic plates. Pam and Tom’s almost matching pink attire and colorful windshield decor won the judges over. It was a clear runaway for first place. Well done! Go Pink!
2nd Place : Russell and Rosche Display Name/Theme:
Tobin James Liquid Love - A Tribute to Bob Savic
Inspiration:
An inviting display of gourmet delights consisting of meats, cheeses, fruit and wine! A beautiful array articulately laid out on a custom Tobin James blanket. The display transformed guests into the winery! A very relaxing display!
3rd Place : Dick Sartor
Display Name/Theme:
Macadamia “Nut” / Hawaiian
Inspiration:
Third place was a tough decision, but because Dick used his entire Porsche to integrate into his Hawaiian-themed display, he was deemed 3rd Place winner. His Porsche color is Macadamia Brown, which was the theme that he managed to carry through to his attire, coconut shapped cups filled with Pina Coladas, to his pineapple sunglasses, Hawaiian Leis, Hawaiian ‘hood’ shirt and of course, Macadamia nuts! An A-Z display!
Honorable Mention : Ken and Jeanne Johnson Display Name/Theme:
Road Trip
Inspiration:
What a fun display. Who hasn’t taken or wanted to take a trip down Route 66?! The Johnsons certainly captured the feel and essence of a road trip with their patriotic table dressing and flags, s’mores, “Route 66” signage and ‘roady’ atmosphere. Are we there yet?
: Mark Kovaletz Display Name/Theme:
31st Anniversary
Inspiration:
If first place was everything pink, the Kovaletz’s had everything burgundy! Indeed a fine wine display to celebrate their 31st Anniversary. Their display personafied the finest table in a restaurant with a butler, table cloth with matching burgundy chairs, a vintage picnic basket, and a beautiful red rose centerpiece. A first class ensemble worthy of any Maitre D’s attention.
: Mike Gugert
18 PANDO | August 2019
Display Name/Theme:
Targa Run
Inspiration:
Mike and team have the picnic contest spirit. A repeat winner and annual contestant who always puts on a great display. Mike brought the Targa California run to the Dana Point White Glove Concours! Even his dog was sporting the Targa California logo! Another creative, spirited Gugert display!

FASFRDY
I
t was a dark and stormy night --- whoops that was another story. I guess we all have a little Walter Mitty in us. Ever since I purchased the 1982 Porsche SC, previously owned by Kenny and Grace Fredrickson, one of our many year PCAOCR members, who named the car FASFRDY. Kenny was the second owner and put 267,000 miles on the car, and I thought about taking the car on an extended road trip. Earlier in the year I took the car on Chris Mewes’ trip to Sedona. It ran well, but I was having to struggle a bit on some of the more “spirited” drives. Traveling with a group is fun, but a bit limited to what the group wants. Having grown up in Wyoming, with Swedish grandparents who homesteaded there, I have always had a bit of the independent spirit. That background set the stage for my little adventure.
I told my wife Nancy that I would be gone for a couple of weeks. With that news, she immediately planned her own two-week agenda: Parties with girlfriends, pajama marathon, late morning rising, control of the TV remote, etc. The interesting part was when I got back. I was home for about 5 hours before she asked, “When are you going on another trip?”
There were a couple of things that needed to be addressed on the car before my trip. I had the cruise control repaired and the oil changed using the Porsche Classic 10W-60 designed for the older 3-liter engines (which I might add performed well and I highly recommend.) I also had the car checked over and had a new alternator installed.
Monday, leaving Susanville and again heading North on US 395, I was heading to Bend, OR to visit an old college roommate of my older sister. I had never been to Bend which was lovely. I now understand why so many Californians head there to retire. There were some very interesting back roads between Susanville and Bend. Not much traffic (I saw four cars in the first 30 minutes) and some beautiful drives around the Mt Hood area. From Bend I headed to Portland to have dinner with one of my nieces. It was a scenic drive, but the traffic out of Bend picked up coming into Portland. I had a lovely dinner at Salty’s on the Columbia overlooking the mighty river.
My trip planning was simple. I planned to do a big loop north along Eastern California to Oregon, East to Montana, South to Wyoming to my family home, South to New Mexico and West back to California. I wanted to hit as many back roads as I could. Not knowing exactly where I would be staying, I simply booked the next hotel each day as I arrived at each day’s destination.
The trip started Sunday May 5th with the odometer reading 337,124. I headed up the I-15 to just South of Victorville and headed North on the US 395, a scenic drive up the East Sierras into Susanville, CA for the night. The first day drive provided several different types of roads, from straight and bumpy to lots of curves with many elevation changes. The terrain and geography changed too.
Tuesday headed out to Coeur D’ Alene, ID. This leg of the journey took me east following the Columbia River to Pasco, August 2019 | PANDO 25
WA, North to Spokane and East into Coeur d’Alene. I had never made this drive. It was a great drive and the terrain and vegetation changed dramatically as I followed the river up to Pasco. Near Portland there’s a lot of forest and camping areas. Nearing Pasco, there are thousands of acres of wheat and other grain products being grown along with hay and other crops. From having overseen several petroleum marine terminal operations in Portland over the years, I knew a little about the vessel traffic on the river. There are many barges that traverse the river. They are dual functioned. The top of the barge has an enclosed shed designed to store grain. The bottom of the barge is designed to store petroleum products. The barges load gasoline, diesel and jet fuel in Portland and travel up river to deliver the petroleum products where they then load grain produced in the area to take down river to load on ocean going vessels for export. There are a series of locks the barges go through as they move up and down the river. Heading North out of Pasco into Spokane, the geography is more of the typical Western plains. Lots of sagebrush, farming on irrigated circles, and cattle and sheep. The drive from Spokane into Coeur d’Alene is relatively short. As you near Coeur d’Alene you start seeing the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains. While the road is an interstate highway there are still many curves and elevation changes which, along with the sights, provides some interesting driving. Coeur d’Alene is a beautiful city bounded by mountains and Lake Coeur d’Alene. As with 26 PANDO | August 2019
Bend there are many retirees from other states. Unfortunately, as I was coming into the City I had started coming down with a bad cold, which limited my sightseeing and photos. From Coeur d’Alene, I headed to Bozeman, MT to visit an old friend from my Conoco days. This was an individual who I met on my first professional job with Continental Pipe Line in 1968. We have been lifelong friends. He and his wife own a beautiful home about 8 miles north of Bozeman in a lovely valley. I stayed over in Bozeman that night and planned to head to Wyoming the next morning. I had considered driving through Yellowstone Park on my way to Cody, WY, but several of the key roads were still closed from the winter snows so I took an Eastern route. In Cody, I visited one of my first bosses who lives there. Similar to Coeur d’Alene, Cody has some very scenic views of the Eastern side of the Rockies and is the Eastern gateway to Yellowstone. My trip from Cody to my hometown of Wheatland, WY turned out to be the exciting part of the trip. I was about 8 miles out of Thermopolis, and I saw a very dark cloud that had just passed over the highway. I had been in a little rain and I expected to hit some more rain, but nothing serious. As I headed into the area where the dark cloud had just passed, the rain turned out to be a very heavy wet snow and the road was covered with about one and half inches of slush. I was going about 55 or 60 MPH and the road suddenly turned white. Before I knew it, the
car was hydroplaning out of control. The vehicle drifted slightly to the right and was sliding directly toward a reflective market pole at the side of the road. I hit the pole just behind the left front headlight and took out the pole, and went into the ditch. Very scary, for a moment, I thought it might flip. I had enough momentum and was able to motor out of the ditch and back onto the highway. My first thought was – Kenny will be pissed! I checked the car and it seemed ok to drive, so I started up again. Suddenly the car started to slide to the left and went off the highway again, but unlike the first skid I was headed toward a deep ravine. The car stopped about 10 feet before the ravine. I could not go forward or back up. Fortunately, a cowboy came along with a big pickup and came over to see how I was doing. First thing he said was “Welcome to the Wyoming weather.” I had a nylon tow strap along and he pulled me out. After cleaning my undies, I headed on down the road. The car was banged up, covered with mud and the undercarriage was filled with grass, sand, mud and sagebrush. I took it slow through the Wind River Canyon into Casper and onto Wheatland, WY and my family home. I spent several days in Wheatland visiting my younger sister. My mother passed away in 2003 and stepdad passed away last May. My sister is managing a couple of houses and a mountain cabin. This was her first Mother’s Day without any family around. I was also still nursing a bad cold.
Based on my off-road incident and concern for what might have happened to the car, I decided to cut my trip short and rather than head to New Mexico, I decided to take a more direct trip home via, Park City, UT and Las Vegas. I stayed the first night in Park City and enjoyed the views of the skiing areas and all the development around the area and headed to Las Vegas for my last night on the road. I stayed at the M Hotel in Vegas. Due to the creed, I cannot discuss my night in Vegas and will leave it at a wild, exciting and a lot of late-night activity of drinking, gambling and party girls. For me that means I had a nice dinner and was in bed by 8:30 p.m. On the last leg of my journey, I had to stop at Peggy Sue’s just east of Barstow. If you have never stopped there it is real blast from the past. I think my waitress was there when it first opened. She was in her prime in the 50’s. Later pulled into home around 2:00 p.m. Odometer read 340,325 miles for a total of 3,201 miles on the journey (for a point of reference, the distance from Huntington Beach to the tip of Long Island NY is 2547 miles).
For you adventurous Walter Mittys out there, I highly recommend a trip like this. It provides great driving and a real appreciation of the great country we live in. (PS -- FASFRDY is at the Doctor’s currently getting ready for another adventure!) August 2019 | PANDO 27
Saturday October 12, 2019 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm + Orange Coast Region’s “Hearts and Garages Tour” moves to October, in an effort to beat the August heat! For the benefit of the newer members, the “Hearts and Garages Tour” is a progressive dinner where we enjoy each other’s company at four different garages in Orange County. Referred to as “Hearts and Garages,” because it’s a combination of a tour of OCR member’s garages and to raise money for our Region’s Designated Charity, the Semper Fi Fund.* The cost charged will be to reimburse the hosts for the progressive dinner, and participants have the opportunity to make a donation directly to the Semper Fi Fund. The event will start at Noon, and finish up in the evening, so you can expect a full afternoon of truly inspiring garages and of visiting with your friends. Registration will open in early September. Watch for more information in your email from OCR. (Please make sure your email listed at pca.org is accurate, so you will not miss anything!)
Pete Lech : peterlech@att.net *Semper Fi Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing a variety of programs to assist wounded veterans in all branches of the United States Armed Forces. The organization describes its mission as “providing urgently needed resources and support for post-9/11 combat wounded, critically ill and catastrophically injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.” As of March 2018, the Semper Fi Fund has issued 158,000 grants totaling $165 million in assistance. https://semperfifund.org/
