Getting front air

Living in the Moment

With the holiday season upon us, I often reflect on how fortunate we are to have friends and loved ones to enjoy life’s simple pleasures with. For those no longer with us, we think of the good times and wish that we could of had just a bit more time. Over the last year, I have learned to appreciate the time spent with others and to focus on living in the moment, without distraction, soaking in as much from those precious interactions as possible.

Driving for me is a time that has always worked well for living in the moment.

By myself, top down, listening to the beautiful sounds only a Porsche engine can produce, I often leave the music off and drift away into thought. The sounds of the road and attention to casual

driving help clear away routine thoughts and let my mind wander. For several years before my father’s passing, we would take annual road trips, spending days exploring any road with a curve in it, trapped in the moment visiting, sharing and enjoying each other’s company.

What a great way to spend some quality time freed of any distraction. While the journeys with Colette (our 18 year old daughter) have been limited to a day, a couple times a year, they are very precious adventures. What will be your next road trip? One of the OCR tours, an OCR rally, or just a cruise down PCH…. plan it today, for time’s a wasting.

Competitive driving is a release that simply demands that you live in the

moment. When all of your focus is on hitting that apex and not hitting anything else, it is simply exhilarating. Just last month at the OCR AutoX, I was in my second set of practice runs, working intensely on capturing the top time away from my buddy Steve. With Chuck in the passenger’s seat helping and motivating me, we were able to clench the top time in practice. As we crossed the timing gates and looked at the time, high fiving each other and filled with pure adrenalin, it was just fantastic. It goes to prove that many times the biggest constraint to performance is your head and not living completely in the moment.

During your time this holiday season with family and friends, try this experiment...turn off your phone, TV’s, tablets, and anything that will distract you from living in the moment. Let’s have an old fashioned experience where we spend time hanging out with one another and getting caught up on each other’s lives. Of course, if these are not your favorite times of the year, you always have that beautiful car to take a long drive to the grocery store.

Now, it is family and the pursuit of passions like hobbies and sports... okay sports for seniors. So, think about it, whatever your stage in life. And do a little preparation, financial and otherwise, to be able to ride off into that virtual sunset.

Where they really do have winter!

Winter in California

With winter increasing its icy grip, it might be time to plan a little trip. Over roads and vales; just other locales. Me and my best friend, we won’t let that Porsche rest! Curvy roads with friends of mine, what a great way to pass the time!

Well, folks back east (anywhere east of the stateline, or north of it for that matter) laugh at California and winter in the same sentence. But we do have one; rainfall goes up to nearly a quarter inch, or at least we hope so.

The freeway ice plant takes a tinge of brown, and now and then we even need to wear a sweater…..oh my.

As I write this, it is actually late October. Due to the vagaries and demands of publishing your little magazine what I am putting down is for December. Not being blessed with the world’s longest attention span (just ask some of my ex-teachers) it can be difficult to relate to the time difference.

As you read this, how are you going to feel about February, for example.

But there are just enough deciduous trees around, and there is just enough of a seasonal change for us to sync with our neighbors and fellow compatriots on the continent and get that wintery feeling. To me this means time with relatives, a little more time at home, and of course some introspection that comes with those fire-lit evenings near the hearth.

So What Kind of Year Did You Have?

For me personally, this is the first full year of retirement. Having worked from Junior High School until... well, never mind. This is a strange stage in my life.

From getting up early to load catering trucks in Paramount, California, to getting up early to board an aircraft in San Diego, California. But truth to tell, I am still busy. It seems that I don’t need an outside influence like a paycheck to motivate me to get up and do something. Mrs. Cooper usually has a fairly substantial “honey do” list. She feels that a husband at rest is a recipe for impending sloth and indigence.

I’d love to hear from our audience about their year, particularly with the club. Did you do any event for the first time? Or, for the100th time? You don’t have to write an article, just tell me about it in short form and I’ll weave it into a shareable yarn for your Porsche Club buddies. I am sure there are some interesting tales out there.

This Club is Your Club

The Orange Coast Region is in Zone 8 of the Porsche Club of America. Our zone 8 is comprised of 13 regions, of which we are one. The zone covers much of the great southwest of these United States. But given the vastness of territory it really only concerns three states:; California South, Arizona, and Nevada South. Go to www.pca.org to see this in detail. In fact visit the national website as soon as you can, because it has been redone and is worth a look. As a member of the PCA you can go to any function in our Zone, and always be assured of a nice reception and, in some cases, a chance to earn regional points in autocross or concours.

Our club has a board and this is an elected group. The elections happen yearly and the terms are for two years.

Greg Lush is our current President and he is doing a great job for us.

Book Review

One Off... The Roads, The Races, The Automobiles Review by Bruce Herrington Book by Toly Artunoff Published by Beeman Jorgansen Inc, Indianapolis, Indiana Since the 1960s, Anatoly Arutunoff has been known in some circles as a very active sports car racer and rally/tour driver, both in the US and Europe. His credentials are solid, having won SCCA National Championships, but he often raced in obscure classes or did rallys in Europe, so he is not as well known in this county as he should be.

This book is not about Toly the racer, but about Toly the unique individual (name me another SCCA Runoffs Champion with 5 college degrees).

Although certain races are discussed in detail, ONE OFF is a book about the life and times of a very interesting character; it shows Toly the raconteur rather than Toly the racer. It is a collection of very interesting and readable stories, told by a selfdepreciating, personable guy, who has had a very active and complex life, mostly related to cars and competitive motorsports events.

The parents of Toly and his two siblings were expatriate Russians.

Toly grew up primarily in Oklahoma, but had ties to the Russian film colony in SoCal, through an uncle. His family was fairly well to do, which gave him the opportunity to have his first new car while in high school, then to hot-rod a series of new cars (and temporarily his mother's), to attend races in Europe, most notably the '57 Mille Miglia which lead to his acquisition of a Carrera GS Speedster as a daily driver.

Not really a motor racing autobiography, ONE OFF none-theless has endorsements by Denise

McCluggage and Peter Egan, who say “ it’s a book that re-ignites the sense of fun and wonder that once filled the motor racing world,” referring more to events leading up to races than to the action on the track. Toly really is one of a kind and it shows through this book, which provides a much more comprehensive picture of Toly than anyone who just watched him race ever saw.

Ten chapters cover various facets of his life (often with overlapping chronologies), and an appendix lists the over 50 tracks on which he has driven.

Chapter titles (they are un-numbered because they are not necessarily sequential, and each stands alone) range from Youth: Capers, Frivolities and Other Gambols, through The Fairer Sex: The Shine on the Glaze on the Cherry on the Frosting on the Cake, to Historic Rallies: Better Cars, Better Food, Better Wine.

Two sections of pictures document his life, from his first 4-wheeled vehicle at age one, to hamming it up at Galleria Ferrari at age 70.

Along the way he was a Ferrari dealer, track designer/ owner/operator, and particularly a guy who liked to drive, especially obscure cars like his Studebaker Hawk, Morgan 4/4, Lotus Europa and Lancia Zagato. He was the kind of guy who

drove for the fun of it, and to him, driving an open Cooper Mark IV Sports car through deep snow on the MonacoSestriere Rally was fun, even at age 52!

Fall Tour to Sedona Story by Mary Hong, Photos by Keith Clark and other tour members A little history, a little nature, good food, a lot of great roads and fun people.

This describes the recent PCA-OCR Fall 2014 tour in Arizona. Twenty cars, 38 enthusiastic participants, and 1,200 spirited miles.

We met at the Costco in Anaheim Hills and then embarked to the beautiful city of Blythe, CA where we had an awesome lunch at Rebel BBQ. From there it was across the CA/Arizona border, where the intense border control didn’t pay attention to a line of Porsches….there is no room to hide anyone in these machines! Then a spirited drive to Scottsdale, Arizona to spend the first night. There were several choices for the group to entertain themselves; some went on the Art Walk in Old Town Scottsdale, some went on

a tour of Taliesin West--Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and some, we are not sure what they did. Those who went on the tour of Taliesin West had the special treat of witnessing Lourinda Clark play Frank Lloyd Wright’s Steinway!

Friday morning was an early start. We had a spirited drive on the Beeline Highway and observed a Corvette “take one for the team” (the Corvette Club and us!). First stop of the day was Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, where we hiked down to see the longest natural bridge in the world, an awesome site!

We then had another FUN drive and met for lunch at the Grasshopper Grill in Cornville, also known as the Cornville Country Club…Who knew! A few of us took a scenic detour because the leader’s

navigator was distracted….oh well….

Theo admitted it gave her more time in my car so she didn’t mind! Next stop…

Enchantment Resort in Sedona! So beautiful!

About half of the group went on a Pink Jeep Tour where they got vibration therapy and experienced 45° declines while seeing amazing views of the Red Rocks of Sedona. Those who did not go on the Jeep Tour went to the Sedona Airport where they met up with Les and Susan Whittlesey and their shiny 1939 Lockheed Electra Junior. Tour participants and a certain Aqua Blue Metallic 991 Carrera S had a great photo op out on the tarmac.

Day 3, Friday, was another early start.

On the road through the Arizona Pine Woods too early and stayed back to enjoy the offerings of the resort. Others travelled Route 66 (the Mother Road) into Flagstaff and visited Sunset Crater National Monument. We viewed the Painted Desert and walked on lava. We had another FUN drive to Cottonwood for lunch at the Cork and Catch. On to Jerome, The Vertical City! The drive there reminded me of driving to the hilltop cities in Provence, France. We visited the Jerome State Historic Park, which is the site of the Douglas mansion and we learned about copper mining.

We drove through Jerome, it was fun seeing the tourists watch our cars wind through the town.

Then was the route down Mingus Mountain, a windy, spirited drive! Next stop, Prescott, where we were able to unwind and get ready for the next day.

What a finish to this tour! On day 4 we drove Highway 89 down the hill out of Prescott, lots of twisties! We ended up on a straight-a-way on Highway 60… we won’t mention the top speed, but the group had a great ride! We ended the trip at the Chevron Station in Quartzsite, where an attendant asked, “is this a coincidence that all these Porsches came in at the same time?” Well attendant, not a coincidence, but a great group sharing their passion for awesome cars and amazing people!

Scenic cars on a scenic overlook This tour would not have been possible without the efforts of Keith and Lourinda Clark. They researched the tour route, hotels, restaurants, road stops, and prepared a detailed itinerary. The tour was so well organized, all of the participants appreciated their efforts.

Greg Lush, Steve and Krystal Peters, and Connie Somers took great photos and graciously shared them with the group.

Norm and Linda Hollinger put together the fabulous tour roster. Ed and Petra McRae of Walter’s Porsche and Porsche Design provided tour kits. Dave and Barbara Goward and the Lushs carried the Tour Kits to the starting point. Joel Sheiner assisted with group leading, and Frank Goodyear consulted on route planning.

How to Winterize Your Porsche Story by Lee Rice

There are so many posts regarding proper winter checks for the later Porsches, especially the 911 in whatever format it happens to be classified under.

There is simply not enough room here to cover the variations of Porsche’s widespread model diversification. We know about the cooling media specified for many models and the old routine of replacing liquids, hoses, and clamps, all within so many calendar months since new, and that goes for everything and anything that even looks like it ever got wet–like those glued-on hose ends to metal casting!

Belts

However for the air-cooled 911 it is a matter of checking the fan belt for alignment and condition (i.e., wear).

Years ago I loved to tease the water Porsches with my winterization service for 911s: wiggle the fan belt: if the belt is not broken or the fan did not fall off– you are done!

But, since the 1989 3.6 (through the 1998 993) with three belts, this once easy winterization is now much more involved and is supposed to involve a shop service that can replace the belts and tension them with a factory belt tensioner.

Having said that, anyone with mechanical knowledge and common sense can safely replace worn or frayed 964-993 belts, as long as you have the proper fan shaft holding tool and wrench from the tool kit.

You have checked your tool kit, right?

Replacing your belts is outlined in the owner’s manual and is fairly simple.

Tires

Tire inflation and condition is critical and as tires are so reliable they are easily forgotten. Before bad weather, it would be wise to at least look over your tires –

especially the rear ones for nails, screws, and roofing bolts stuck in them! I’ve had all of those items in mine.

Windshield Washer Fluid

Windshield Washer Fluid –fill up and install new Wiper Blades –a must just in case it does rain!

Misc Items in the Car

about 43 inches long, and bought two rubber caps that slip over each end. I then can push the pvc tool down on the accelerator pedal and push it all the way to the max stop and brace the other end against the seat bolster with the soft rubber caps. OBVIOUSLY REMOVE BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE!

PEDALS

I must add that I put in a dead pedal some years ago and I wish I had put a dead pedal in my 911 back in the very beginning. The correct placement is parallel with the adjusted accelerator pedal at rest. This way when you are driving, your right foot is on the gas about 3/8-inch down from rest position and your left foot should be even with your right foot. I did not know this when I first put my dead pedal in, and I was puzzled by my need to move my seat around. It was awkward. I was unknowingly compensating for my misaligned dead pedal was very frustrating. Then I drove a customer’s 911 and his dead pedal was installed even with the gas pedal! The difference was AMAZING and, of course, it’s never too late to learn! I immediately redid my dead pedal and was… amazed! Like the driver’s seat, steering, shifter, and pedals you just do not realize how much you compensate for the seat and poorly placed controls.

Next is the accelerator, or gas pedal.

You must have full throttle or what we call: WOT (that’s Wide Open Throttle!) You absolutely must have that! You would be surprised how many cars do not have wide open throttle.

To check this involves having the gas pedal fully down--on the floor board-and have the throttle arm resting on the WOT position. The first thing to check is the Limit Stop. This is located under the gas pedal. It is a big plastic bolt to adjust the maximum position.

If you do not have WOT, check for too much carpeting and floor mats under the pedals. Serious drivers remove all carpets and floor mats for basic pedal adjustment. Then use a thin carpeting under the driver’s feet so as to not interfere with pedal movement. Have someone push the gas pedal all the way down while you look at the maximum stop (WOT) If your gas pedal is all the way down, you can try adjusting the floor board plastic bolt downward to get WOT. I made a WOT tool out of 1-inch diameter white PVC pipe,

Now I can see what the engine’s maximum throttle position is without bothering my wife. If that does not give you MAX WOT, you may need to adjust your throttle rod. One is under the floor board connecting the gas pedal to the throttle bellcrank. It has a ball socket connecting it to the bearing bracket, or Pedal Assembly. The other end of the bellcrank has an adjustable ball socket connector on the long throttle rod going through the tunnel to the rear of the car.

Sometimes an adjustment is needed on the throttle itself. However this is more involved. If further adjustments are needed, it is best done on a lift or jacking the 911 up on four safety jack stands. Once under the 911, the adjustments can be done. Now you can make adjustments and get WOT with the gas pedal adjusted where you want it.

I always see 911s, and almost all cars, with the brake pedal sticking way up high as if all drivers are very, very, short. This is, to me, not only a nuisance, but very tiring to drive this way and, I think unsafe. 911s all come from the factory this way too.

Why? The brake pedal adjustment is so simple and easy to do!

The connecting rod from the pedal to the master cylinder is under the floor board and a simple nut adjustment moves the pedal’s rest position. The later vacuum booster brake cars have even less pedal travel and the adjustment is with a control rod from the pedal to the vacuum booster.

I like to set my brake pedal to be at rest about 1-inch above the correctly adjusted accelerator pedal when at rest. This makes driving from power to braking a matter of easing and lifting off throttle and merely rotating your foot over and slightly up and onto the brake pedal. NOT LIFTING YOUR LEG, ANKLE, and FOOT UP HIGH, like in a marching in a band!

By not lifting your leg and foot, you are quicker and smoother; more precise with your braking and, when coming back on power, you are smoother.

Another thing to consider is that the stock adjustments take too much time, tires a driver, and makes you slower!

The Clutch

I set my clutch to be just below the brake pedal at rest position. Early 911s had a fully adjustable clutch. The clutch pedal rod was a round rod welded to the pedal and threaded on the end. This was screwed into the threaded clutch arm on the pedal console. Adjustments were really easy and simple. Just loosen the jam nut and turn the pedal.

In 1974, Porsche went to a nonadjustable clutch pedal. However, you can adjust clutch play on the 915 and 930 transaxle with the cable rod ends, control arms, and their adjusting bolts to ALWAYS GET FULL DISENGAGEMENT AND adjust free play to lower your clutch pedal down to just below the brake pedal at rest position. This makes driving so much

RUF CTR mirror easier and smoother. The G-50 is a bit different, and I have been through the “fire” on this one. Next month I am adjusting the G-50 pedals.

Mirrors

With your seat, steering wheel, shifter and foot pedals set where you like them, it is time for mirrors. Mirrors should be set where you can glance and check for cars, bicycles, and joggers on the side and the rear of your Porsche easily.

I have found the windshield mounted Rear View Mirror should be set so you see directly behind you and over to the right. Door mirrors should enable you to glance over and check for cars.

I found that the big “Flag” mirrors are great for seeing everything in view, however I also found myself not just glancing over to check my side clearance but I also end up staring–with both eyes–into the right side mirror.

This is a NO-NO! Side mirrors are for glancing and checking.

I ended up installing Ruf CTR mirrors on my evolution 911 and put them on because I disliked the big unaerodynamic looks of the “Flag”

mirrors and almost every other mirror.

I was very surprised to find that the Ruf (935) convex right mirror revealed everything I needed to see.

The left mirror has a flat glass that is close enough to my eyes to let me see everything in the left side. I found that it was easy to scan over view on all mirrors that over lap each other after I do a head swivel to check my left or right and confirm with the mirrors that my lane is clear. I am also glad to report that I have never moved over onto another car… something I cannot say for our Grand Caravan with two monster mirrors!

Seat & Shoulder Belts

I had used my original 1968 seat/ shoulder belt with a good seat (Recaro Sport Seat), and I appreciated the ease of putting on, getting out, and for most driving it was a fair belt system.

However, I relocated my seat belt anchor position, as I disliked the weird position Porsche chose to mount safety seat belts in the early 911. I relocated the seat belt anchor positions as we do by FAA aircraft standards (BTW found online from standard practices for aircraft–FAR Part 43.13 -2B Fig 9-3 if you are interested) but basically

I would like to ask the members of OCR to vote for me for the position of Member-at-Large for the 2015-16 term.

I became a member of OCR in 2004. I have enjoyed the fellowship of many Porsche drivers and the enthusiasm of PCA, and decided to get more involved in club activities.

I actively participate in Autocross and became Equipment Chair 20072008; Autocross Co-Chair 2009-2010; Autocross Emeritus 2011, 2012 and 2013. I currently volunteer as the Autocross Corner Worker Station Chair.

When requested, I also assist with the delivery of equipment to OCR-sponsored events such as Concours, Annual Swap Meet, and when called upon.

I look forward to serving you as Member-at-Large. Thank you for voting #21 M@L!

Hello fellow Porsche enthusiasts.

My name is Gary Labb. I bought my first Porsche in 1976 and have enjoyed driving them ever since. I joined PCA-OCR in 2009 and started attending board meetings to find out what was going on within PCA-OCR.

I would like to be considered for the position of PCA-OCR’s Secretary for the 2015-2016 term.

In 2011 I was asked to be the Social Media Chair and currently look after the PCA-OCR website, both Facebook pages, and the Twitter page. I also provide photos and assist with editing the Pando. I was honored to be named the 2011 PCA-OCR Male Enthusiast of the Year.

I try to attend as many PCA-OCR events that I can in order to speak with fellow members about what they’d like to see happening within the club. With that in mind, I ran for the board in 2012 and I am currently one of the Members-at-Large, involved with the decision making process for the club.

I would like to continue being a PCA-OCR board member in 2015-2016 to assist with the continued growth and future development of PCA-OCR. Sincerely, Gary

My husband and I joined the Club in 2008, and are the proud owners of a 1988 930. My involvement with the club has been extremely positive and I wish to continue to donate my time and serve on the Board of Directors as Secretary.

In addition to the PCA-OCR Secretarial duties, I have worked diligently to enhance the quality of the Breakfast Club Meetings by arranging monthly guest speakers and encouraging complimentary coffee be given to all members at the Meeting. I will continue to do my best to promote and actively participate in Club activities.

I have managed the Goodie Store and upgraded the store to award-winning products for six years (of course with the help of three very capable ‘elves’).

I am the current and past Chair for the Club’s Toys for Tots Drive (2013, 2014). I Chaired the 50th PCA-OCR Anniversary Celebration in 2011 and I was selected as PCA-OCR Female Enthusiast of the Year in 2010.

With your continued support, we will continue to make PCA-OCR the finest club around!

The Board members are listed at the front of this magazine and I am always very proud to note the contribution that women have made to our region and their enthusiastic participation in every level of our organization. Please look at these Board posts and consider your own position, ability, and desire to join in and help.

As is usually the case with volunteer groups, it is not hard to do so. Generally all you have to do is to say, “I’d like to help” and before you know it you will be helping!

We were founded as a region in 1961.

That is a whopping 53 years ago. I have often wondered what the times would have been like in Orange County back then? There were still three-lane roads around and much of the county was still rural and agricultural. Of course the wellspring of our name, Orange Coast Region, reflected the citrus

beginnings of much of our area. Just remember Orange County and the “City of Orange”. Strange no one thought to name a town, Avocado or Tangerine.

We do have a Walnut in the state, of course to compensate for Cucamonga, I suppose.

But those original 10-15 guys and gals running around the rural byways of an agricultural county have by now morphed into 2,000 plus members shooting up and down multi-lane freeways that run through long forgotten orchards and farms. Do we still have as much fun as the pioneers?

You bet we do! Little bathtub 356s are now yards long Panameras with enough cargo capacity to haul lumber. Have you recently sat in a 356? They are tiny indeed and you are rubbing shoulders both figuratively and literally!

Which leads me to a conclusion, finally.

Come out and join us. Go ahead and rub some shoulders of your own. We’d love to see you and learn about you, and your Porsche! See you soon I hope.

Shoulder belts should be mounted straight back and level with shoulders in a seated position no more than 30° above the shoulders.

However, today this still needs clarification for those who just love everything original, like concours. (there is a philosophy that everything from the factory is perfect, but I have to say that is just not true.)

Shortly after the 901-911 came to America, the mounting position of the 900 series Porsche was noted to have the seat belt mounting on the rear bulkhead to be mounted up too high.

I soon saw in our Panorama and now state what is available from PCA in the:Up Fixin der PORSCHE 12/68 Vol. 3 P 120 & 124: “It has seemed to me for some time (12/1968)-LfR) that the seat belt anchors on the 900 series Porsche were very poorly positioned with regard to all safety theories of seat belts. In other words, they are much too high and allow the belts to ride up on the torso. With this mounting it is almost impossible to really do an adequate job of holding one’s self in the seat. Also it is the feeling of some of our members that a fatality in a 911S last year (1967) near Golden could be attributed to the belt being so high that internal injuries resulted and the driver ultimately died.”

“Since it is the opinion of most safety experts that seat belts should be positioned so as to cross the body in the pelvic area, I removed the anchors provided and drilled 4 holes through the

Scroth Seat system seats etc 12-’13 floor behind the seats, approximately 1½- to 2-in. forward from the rear part of the floor ad approximately 1- to 1½- inch from the outside wall and inside the tunnel. Seat Belt anchoring loops (available in most hardware and automotive supply stores) were installed with large heavy washers about 4-in. in diameter under the floor to provide strength.”

I started wearing them all the time. I soon got used to the belting up process and got so used to them it felt natural.

I became much more in touch with my Porsche, especially since I then had a good seat, mirrors, shifter, and pedals perfectly adjusted–just for me. I put on just the stock belts/shoulder harness, you know, just to see the difference– and was almost appalled at the insecure feeling that gave me!

*This still applies to any classic Porsche 911-912-914. *I can supply FAA part 43.13 information for anyone wanting to change their old classic Porsche to a safer mounting position.

Shortly after I ran my first autocross, I installed a set of aircraft 4-inch wide seat belts and 2-inch shoulder harnesses, as I needed them for PCA/ POC Time Trials. Installing them was simple enough, but wearing them was awkward and distracting so, in order to get used to them and feel comfortable,

Today I have proudly worn out four sets of competition seat/shoulder belts and am now using a SCROTH SAFETY SEAT HARNESS SYSTEM and I love it. I have one item for current time trial drivers and that is: Without a HANS device, you should not use 3-inch wide shoulder harnesses.

Especially tightened up too tight.

Unless you are driving a 100% race car, a street/track Porsche does not need to have its driver belted in rock solid tight.

And in the event one comes to a sudden stop, PLEASE realize that your helmeted head is moving while you tightened torso has stopped. Something

has to restrain it.

I use 2-inch wide shoulder harnesses on my SCROTH SAFETY HARNESS (FIA Approved) which has a safety break away to lessen the shock load on my neck and head.
