PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greg Lush

It Has Been My Honor I

am done, I am out of here, if I had a microphone I would drop it.... it has been one heck of a run. Over the last six years participating on your Board of Directors, five of those years as your President, the time has finally come to step down. Words cannot describe the gratitude I have for this wonderful Orange Coast Region (OCR) Porsche Club; allowing me to work for you all of these years. Under the Board of Directors tutelage, OCR has gone above and beyond as evidenced by an impressive list of achievements. A perfect balance of smooth and rough roads have left an indelible imprint on me as an individual. Many of you may have experienced the true joy as a result of volunteering. While participating in a Porsche car club is no match for the wonderful humanitarian volunteers and their efforts, still something pulls you in to the volunteering vortex. For me it has always been about creating an environment which allows folks to participate in the club for the pure joy of celebrating these wonderful vehicles and embracing others with like-minded interests. Our posting of minutes, sharing financials, providing mobile applications and social channels, asking for input before BoD meetings, all supporting the same theme; “People. Porsches. Passion”.

Our recruiting efforts should continue to be a priority, not just to whoop San Diego and claim our place as the largest region in Zone 8, but to ensure that this club will be strong for another 50 years! The climate is changing, many young folks are focused on point A to point B cars and the markets are reacting with car services like UBER and Autonomous vehicles. My father influenced my life in many ways, one of those was the appreciation for the automobile. The lines, the sounds, the smells and the feeling when you are behind the wheel; one of our many simple pleasures. My most relaxing Friday afternoons, after returning home from work is to open the garage doors, grab a scotch, turn on some music, and enjoy the beauty around me. Those of you grinning can feel my sincerity jump from the words on this page. Let’s continue to reach out to all ages to become members of OCR as well as those “front engine” car owners flooding the Porsche landscape. We are all enthusiasts, let’s enthusiastically continue our recruiting for OCR.

I am always at a loss for words as it is me who should be thanking you for making OCR the greatest region in all of PCA. I am looking forward to maintaining our momentum and supporting our new President and Board members, and I thank you in advance for your willingness to volunteer. For now, that’s all!

Greg Lush PCA-OCR President

People. Porsches. Passion.

January will see a new face as our President. It is healthy for a club to experience different styles of leadership and for this reason alone I will not be throwing my name in for another term, at least this round. So many of you have sent such kind notes, out of the blue, thanking me for my service. Honestly,

Even though it’s already winter weather in other parts of the country, PCA-OCR members are really lucky we’re able to enjoy our cars in sunny southern California while Porschephiles in other parts of the USA aren’t as fortunate.

So, after taking one of those truly fantastic SoCal drives and stowing your beloved Porsche in the garage; take a moment and avoid untangling those twisted holiday lights (you know you promised yourself last year you’d buy a reel and organize!) plus those seemingly endless card and gift lists and enjoy YOUR December Pando!

As always, there’re more articles and pictures for you to enjoy and in the spirit of the Holiday; I want to share one very special early gift I received this year as a result of a smile and simple hello. I met a wonderful neighbor, Rick Waldron, who in the course of a simple conversation;

Rick is a new, treasured friend and Dick Sartor and I are eagerly looking forward to him joining us at a PCA-OCR event. Well, it’s time to unsnarl those lights, get on a ladder, string away and set the light timer. Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

SHELBY AMERICAN

Up Close and Behind the Scenes, 1962-1965: The Venice Years by Dave Friedman, published September, 2017 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The complete title of this great book is rather cumbersome; focus on the ‘Up Close and Behind the Scenes’ which ‘says it all’ about this book. Professionally produced, with differing images on the end papers, this book exudes quality – carefully prepared, just like the cars described. The dust jacket has folded edges to prevent tears and make it durable, which is almost a pity - the subtle image on the hard cover itself is worth displaying on your coffee table. And, after all, images are what this book is all about. The author was Shelby American’s official in-house resident photographer in the 1960s, and this book is a collection of his pictures resurrected from a variety of ‘archives’ and provided with explanatory captions. Some of the scenes showing the Shelby operation of the early ‘60s, e.g. the front end papers, seem very similar to 1950’s scenes from the Porsche shops. There is no direct Porsche content in this book, but 904’s are shown behind (darn) the Cobra’s in some of the racing pictures, and Spyder hot-shoes of the ‘50s - Roger Penske and Bob Holbert - are mentioned as Cobra drivers in the ‘60s. There is also photographic evidence that George Lucas (the George Lucas no less) spent some of his youth as a Shelby crew member. Extensive quotations and detailed captions for the generally un-posed pictures give the book a very personalized feeling. The

conversational tone of the captions makes it read like behind the scenes gossip; it really is the inside story. The time frame covered is that of the design-build-develop-racerepeat era of Shelby American in Venice, California, the formative years if you will. In addition to the Cobras, the development of the Daytona Coupes, Ford GT40 and The GT350 Mustangs is covered. SHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes tells the story of a small company building virtually home-built cars, unimpeded by outside interference of corporate mentality or government regulations, and beating the ‘big boys’ on the race track. It is very much a reprise of the Porsche story. There are many pictures of cars in development/modification and on the race track, but to a great degree, this book is about the people of Shelby, and their unique camaraderie. The names that float through this book are a comprehensive who’s who of mid-century, world-wide motor sport. Shelby-American was focused on racing and much of the book is devoted to race coverage, presenting inside stories, not just results. It gives insight into a bygone era of do-it-yourself, lo-tech manual work. The Venice shops that produced the

cars that won the World Manufacturer’s Championship in 1965 did not even have air tools. This is a book with a grass-roots feeling that any motor-sports enthusiast, even Porschephiles, should have. Porschephiles come in multiple ‘stripes,’ but those oriented to the maintenance/ repair/modification/construction of cars, or the in-the-pits ‘scene’ of motor-racing world-wide, will love this book. There are four chapters, one for each of the years covered. There is also an Epilogue that touches briefly on the GT350 production and 1966-67 ShelbyMustang racing successes. SHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes is a hardbound book of 240, 12 in x 9.75 in pages, with 100 color & 200 b-w photos. There is a complete index and a very comprehensive Appendix tabulating Shelby-Ford results from the almost 150 races in which they participated from October ‘62 through June ‘67. By the time you read this, it should be available from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from QuatroKnows.com. It is not a sacrilege for a Porschephile to have this Shelby book on their coffee table; rather it is a testament to their devotion to motorsport. December 2017 | PANDO 9

Judy was overheard telling non-members who wished to partake in the ‘free’ Toys 4 Tots BBQ, that the Porsche Club doesn’t turn anyone away! Words, we should all remember. We are fortunate to have Judy devote her time to the Club for as long as she has. According to Judy, the Club has provided much pleasure and the opportunity to make lasting friendships. The cars brought us to the Club, but it’s the people that keep us there!

DRIVING SKILLS Story by Don Chapman Photos by Joe Barnet

How to Drive Fast Using Your Brakes Part 3

Left Foot Braking :

Really? Another article on braking? I know, I know, three driving articles all about braking may seem a bit excessive? But that is just how important braking is to actually going faster around a track. We’ve studied Threshold Braking and Trail Braking, and in this article we will be covering Left Foot Braking. As I am sure most of you were taught, the right foot typically administers the throttle input and then shifts over to apply the necessary braking input. The clutch pedal (if you have one) is always controlled with the left foot. Left Foot braking quite simply refers to braking with the left foot instead

12 PANDO | December 2017

Honestly, on the street, I would suggest you stick with what you are most comfortable with. Using the right foot for both the accelerator and brake pedals does work, and it works well. But on the track or autocross course, where every fraction of a second counts, there are some advantages to left foot braking. In earlier articles, we mentioned that a key secret to better car control is to apply fast smooth inputs. With one foot doing double duty, you are always moving your right foot back and forth between the pedals. No matter how smoothly you release the throttle input to apply the brakes, such a transition can and does unsettle the car. This becomes especially true if you are at, or close to, the car’s grip limits.

of the right.

Left foot braking simply helps to shorten

So, why after driving all these years and using your right foot for both the brake and throttle should you even consider left foot braking?

transition time.

and eliminate the throttle-to-brake

By having your left foot taking care of the braking duties while the right foot applies

the throttle input in inversely proportional amounts, you reduce the weight transfer and increase your tires traction circle. Left foot braking is also very advantageous when you need to adjust your inputs mid corner! If, for example, you suddenly realize you’ve entered into a corner a little too fast, by having your left foot already on the brake pedal, you can apply the brakes almost instantly with less volatility allowing for a faster correction. Left Foot Braking must be practiced! It will seem very unnatural to use your left foot to brake. Seriously, only practice this technique on an empty side road or parking lot. You may (most likely) accidently press the brake like it was the clutch. That is where the seatbelt and shoulder harness comes in handy. Quite simply, if you have never tried to brake with your left foot it will take a lot of practice to get the braking just right. As with any technique, there are Pros and Cons. There are legitimate reasons not to

left foot brake. In some Porsche’s and other sports cars with a clutch, the brake pedal/seating position may be offset too far to comfortably get your left foot on to the brake pedal. Or, the dance with the left foot on the clutch and brake may also be too much for you to handle. But, if you have a Porsche with a Tiptronic or PDK (Porsche’s automatic) transmission, learning to Left Foot Brake on an autocross course can be a lot of fun and could shave off some precious seconds. We only have two Autocross events remaining in 2017! All PCA members driving a Porsche will be accepted. So, come on out and play with us. The Autocross team (myself included) will be happy to instruct and help you with any questions you may have!

Grand The

In early September, Nancy and I participated in a

recent Autobahn Adventures “The Grand Tour,” which included a driving tour of Germany, Czech Republic, Hungry and Austria (and accidently a brief part of Slovakia – we skipped a waypoint and the GPS routed us through a short part of Slovakia!) This tour involved a visit to the Porsche Leipzig manufacturing plant (Porsche makes the entire four door Porsches there) and two and three day stays in wonderful hotels in the central areas of several cities including: Munich, Dresden, Prague, Budapest and Vienna. The cars were all 2017 911s (some 4s and some 2s) except one couple had a 2017 Panamera (diesel). The GPS’s were programed (in English) with all of the hotel addresses and other way points so each of the vehicles could travel independently. This was the first time Mark and Tina were allowed to take the Porsches to Czech Republic and Hungry. The cars were stored in guarded parking garages, remote from the hotels for safe keeping (seems there is a tendency for Porsches to end up in Russia, or as spare parts if they are not carefully monitored).

Autobahn adventures group after tour of Porsche Leipzig Auto Plant. They make all four door models at the plant.

Our Tour travelling companions consisted of nine couples and two separate single individuals (eleven cars), along with Mark and Tina Trewartha (owners of Autobahn Adventures), along with Stacey and Sam (Mark and Tina’s daughter and son-in-law) who drove the luggage truck and helped with the scheduling. With the exception of one single lady and one couple, the rest of the group had been on other Autobahn Adventure tours (three and four times!) which added a new dimension to the trip. Also interesting was the fact that the entire group was from the US with four of the couples from California. This tour was quite different from an Autobahn Adventures four country tour that Nancy and I had taken a couple of years ago, in that this trip was much more focused on the history and urban culture of the countries and less on the driving. During the earlier tour, we stayed at lovely remote resort hotels in picturesque mountain settings and drove over many mountain passes and rural roads. We were in beautiful historic hotels located in the center of the cities and close to many historical sites and local attractions. In comparison to our other trip, this time we were driving on the Autobahn from city to city, so it was a little less exciting. Of course in Germany, there were sections with unlimited speed. In the other countries, the speeds were limited to 130 KPH (80.8 MPH). I needed to see what top speed I could achieve on the Autobahn (main purpose of the trip for me). On the trip from Munich to Leipzig we got up to 217 KPH (slightly over 168 MPH) but a caution note came up on the instrument panel noting that there was a cooling issue that needed attention. Later I took the vehicle into a Porsche dealer in Dresden to have it checked out (was a faulty signal). However, being the typical US Porsche male driver, I was explaining to the service manager how I had the vehicle up to 271 KPH on the Autobahn. He looked at me and in a very ho hum response said “Well, that model goes up to 300 KPH,” immediately crushing my ego flat as a pancake!

Lovely outdoor Dinner at Ritz Carlton - Budapest

18 PANDO | December 2017

One interesting aspect of the trip was that all of the cities had been extensively involved in World War II, and each of them had been directly and indirectly involved with the Russian (Soviet Union) occupation/influence after the war. Several of the countries had only relatively recently (early 1990’s) become independent of the Russian influence. This aspect of the trip was reflected in much of what we saw and experienced, notably in the architecture of the inter cities and the evolving suburbs. The older buildings appeared to be built of large sandstone blocks and were typically 5 to 7 stories high. We found out later that the buildings were actually made of thousands of standard sized bricks with a plaster

façade on the outside. The Russian (Socialists) influence could be seen in many of the newer buildings that were very plain and functional, but not very attractive. The Czech Republic and Hungry still had their own currencies, but the Euro was generally accepted. Additionally, our credit and debit cards worked well in nearly all of the locations. All of the cities had major rivers running through the centers of the cities which in turn, over the years, resulted in the development of many beautiful older bridges. Also, as typical in most European cities, there were extensive light rail trolley systems, electric buses and extensive rail transportation centers for travel between the cities. One thing I found interesting about the rivers was that in the northern cities, the rivers flowed north to the Baltic Sea and the southern cities, the rivers flowed to the Black Sea. I guess that should have been logical, but I needed our tour guides to point that out. One very interesting place Mark and Tina recommended was the Hans-Peter Porsche Traumwerk exhibit that was east of Munich near the Austria border. The exhibit was fascinating and was established by Hans Peter Porsche, the grandson of the automobile founder. One particular part of the exhibit was a large room that included over 100 model trains (all running at once) in an alpine setting with all sorts of visual effects. In another area there was also was several million Euros worth of beautiful Porsches sitting around too. Website: www.hanspeterporsche.com. If you are ever near the place, I highly recommend a couple of hours to visit. The place is amazing!

by – fortunately for me, and to Nancy’s misfortune, it was Sunday and they were all closed. Dresden was interesting, and reflected a typical East German city evolving from becoming part of the Western German influence. Prague was pretty wide open with a lot of free spirit and enterprise developing. Budapest was interesting, in that there were two distinctly different parts of the city, Buda on one side of the Danube River and Pest on the other side. Buda had a very hilly terrain and Pest was flat. Vienna seemed a bit more industrial than the other cities, but still had a lot of interesting aspects of the central part of the city. Needless to say we did not lose any weight on the trip. We had several wonderful dinners. At the Ritz Carlton in Budapest, we had dinner outside in the street next to the hotel with exceptional service and food. At several of the other locations, we had dinners at nearby restaurants where we were seated at either the chef’s table watching the chef at work, or a large table next to the kitchen and could walk over to the chef to be served a variety of items that were being prepared as we watched. All of the planned meals were great. In the mornings, each of the hotels had the typical large European buffet breakfasts with an extensive selection of entries to choose. In addition to the restaurants, we had a couple of nighttime river dinner cruise events that provided a different perspective to the trip. All in all, as in the typical Mark and Tina tradition, it was a great trip with many lasting memories!

New York City Cafe - Budapest

Hans Peter Porsche Model Train Exhibit

With the exception of several wonderful dinners, we were pretty much on our own for independent exploring of the cities. Several of the couples took the “hop on hop off” tours and several took walking tours. Nancy and I hired private driving tours in Prague and Budapest which worked out well for us. We were able to see a lot of the city and in each case we had English speaking guides which were great. ASHEVILLE TREFFEN 2017 Story by Tom McDonald

and told us he had the car for us, and presented us with a 2017 AMG C63 twin turbo Mercedes. This was an awesome automobile, and during the run on the TOD the Porsches out performed (smoked) the AMG on the turns; but the short straight ways were all the AMG needed, the turbos kicked in, and the sport settings set for driving performance. Ok, enough on the drive! I still have a smile on my face when I think about the experience. Thank you, Hertz!

Sometimes things just work out. In 1988, I read an article describing one of the best driving experiences in the U.S. The described highway was Highway 129 on the North Carolina and Tennessee border called “the Tail of the Dragon,” (http://tailofthedragon.com/) with 318 turns in 11 miles each way. Cheryl and I were joined by Barry and Denise Michaels in Asheville, N.C. at the The Omni Grove Park Inn; The Grove Park Inn opened on July 12, 1913, and “was built for the ages.” If you are a fan of Craftsman’s style and Stickley furniture fan, you will definitely enjoy the “The Grove.” We decided to fly out instead of driving or shipping our 2005 Carrera, which led to another adventure with Hertz. They did not have the car we requested (had to be at least a German auto), so after discussions with the manager, he smiled

Last year we joined Barry and Denise for the Lake Tahoe Treffen in 2016, so this was our second PCA Treffen. In both events, PCA and the local region, did a great job to provide a memorable event for all. The driving events, the local visits to notable places and of course the tradition of fine dining. I could go on and on, but I’ll close for now. Right now, we are planning to attend the Banff, Canada next September. I would recommend this, if it is on There are se crets hid your bucket list. You need to be very quick on the registration, Asheville sold out in less than an hour!

PCA-OCR Tour of

Idyllwild

Story by Glenn Billings Photos by Paul Novotne

Octoberfest

T raditionally,

September is one of the hottest months in Orange County, but a gloomy morning greeted 24 Porsche owners gathered at the Block of Orange for OCR`s second annual Oktoberfest for the Idyllwild Tour. The good news is, the overcast didn`t dampen our spirits and after CL Jarusek provided final trip instructions, our group started out onto the Garden Grove Freeway.

Boxster’s; but we all gravitated toward the Martini Porsche 918 Spyder owned by Pram Oen. Pram said the 918 represented the number of Hybrid cars the Factory produced and he had one of the 300 in the U.S. It had all the carbon fiber body parts surrounding the 850 horsepower 8 cylinder engine and everything was high tech, even the $1100 cup holder.

The first 51 miles took us through the Santa Ana Canyon through Corona, then south on the 15 exiting at Cajalco Road. The slate gray freeways matched the color of the skies, and as our group drove east, the landscape began turning beige with open fields and a smattering of cow farms and feed stores. Fortunately, the long, sweeping bends in the road were making our Porsches come alive! The intrepid souls in some of the top down Boxsters had to brave a slight mist around Lake Matthews, but after a few flips of the windshield wipers, our group arrived at our rest stop in Perris, dry and in good order.

Our Perris rest stop was halfway in the 92 mile trek, so we continued onto our final destination, 5200 feet above sea level at the Fern Valley Emporium, where our host, Don Zeigler, was busy preparing a German meal.

It was impressive to see all the different Porsches lined up, Carreras, GT3`s, older air cooled 911`s, and a half dozen

28 PANDO | December 2017

Traveling on California Highway 74, we turned left on Florida Avenue and started the climb to Idyllwild. This is what Porsches were made for! As the sun made its first appearance, the scenery changed into lush green landscapes and blue skies. As we left behind the fast, fourth gear bends around Lake Matthews, we now happily drove the twisty, windy, switchbacks on the 243. This was “Wunderbar!” The constant right, left, right, left second and third gear corners caused you to experience the sensations of centrifugal force. As we navigated around narrow strips of tarmac, it felt like a roller coaster ride; however, you`re in control. The GT3 cars we followed on this road were sounding pretty healthy as they downshifted and accelerated. We were within two minutes of our scheduled noon arrival time. Again, “Wunderbar!”

After breathing in the clean mountain air and viewing the open skies, we could finally pause and gaze at the forest with its aspens and evergreens. The quaint mountain town of Idyllwild was busy this Sunday, and our two dozen Porsches weren`t the only visiting group. A moderate number of motorcycles, including Harley Davidsons and Indians, were present along with the usual visitors with families. At the relaxing Fern Valley Emporium, Don presented an array of Oktoberfest food including German potato salad, Sauerkraut, Spätzle, Schwendenbraten, Bratwurst, other Teutonic delicacies, and German beer, all being supplied by an authentic German Deli in Calimesa, CA. With the tour officially over, most of the stalwarts decided to continue on the 243 to Banning, catching the 10 freeway, enjoying beautiful views of the valley, as they took the long way home back to Orange County. A few of us retraced our original drive which resulted in a splendid experience including two GT3’s making powerful sounds during the group’s descent. It was a really fun OCR group event with great Porsche driving opportunities, terrific camaraderie and wonderful food! Hopefully, we can get CL to organize a 2018 Idyllwild trip and have another fun Octoberfest adventure!

What’s In My Garage? Story and Photos by Aaron P. McKinnon

After Streets of Willow.

J

ust over 3 years ago, I ran out of a combination of luck and skill at Streets of Willow. I had just finished a conversion to a 5-lug and built a new motor that I had integrated a CB Performance Type I dry sump into a Jake Raby inspired, 2056cc Type IV. Before finally heading to the track, I ran through all of my normal routines: nut and bolt, fluid flush, test drives, etc. The car felt great, but it was not to be my day. Roughly 1.5 laps into my warm up, I felt the car take a funny set in the “Bowl Turn”. This turn leads into the back straight followed by a downhill chicane. Normally, I would be flat out down the back straight and brake heavy into the left at the end of the chicane, but due to the strange feeling I got out of the rear of the car, I decided to come in and investigate. I was peddling home nice and slow, and as I reached the end of the straight and the beginning of the downhill section (sometimes referred to as the “waterfall”) the rear of the car came around hard and fast. Counter steering did 30 PANDO | December 2017

nothing, and I found what must be the only stack of hay bales on the circuit. The bales made a mess of the entire driver’s side of the car. The driver’s side trailing arm and the exhaust sustained some damage, but other than that, the damage was cosmetic. So, this began a 3-year build, and I learned new skills in the art of body work. I began work fairly quickly with a portapower trying to push out the big dents. The front came out pretty easy, but the door and rear quarter panels were “goners.” A call to a good friend and local 914 parts hoarder yielded front and rear quarter panels and a door. I moved the car to a friend’s warehouse, where we removed the rear quarter panel, cutting along sight lines we could use to properly align the donor part. After skinning the old and new parts as necessary, we used a combination of plug welding and seam welding with a TIG machine and silicon bronze rod. We thought this would give

us the best chance of the welds not cracking later in life since the car would continue to be raced in some capacity. I also took this opportunity to weld in a longitudinal stiffening kit. Once the welding was done, I returned the car back to my driveway where I spent an enormous amount of time with hammer and dolly getting all the metal work ready for the next stage. This is hard work my friends! The next step was a skim coat of 3M light-weight body filler followed by blocking, priming, and more blocking. A staple of the SGV hot rod scene and all around good guy, Dennis of Foreign Motors Body Shop, took pity on me and showed me some of the finer points of blocking a car. Once Dennis was happy with my work, he had me shoot my doors and jams myself (I have some experience shooting two stage paint) then it went to his shop for the final barrier, color, and clear coats. The car was repainted in the factory

Delphi Green (L99A) using PPG water based paint. I tackled the rest of the paint work myself. Days of welding, sanding, and priming went into getting the bumpers, and the like dialed in. This was followed by coats of satin black from SprayMax (satins are tough to lay down right, Spray Max Satin Black was another gift of wisdom from Dennis.) Then, I turned my attention to the interior. I decided on a GT look, so I started removing the back pad and replacing it with perlon. From there I removed the center console and radio, while moving the gauges to the dash. Finally, I laid down a light weight carpet kit. All of the original brown vinyl was either replaced or recovered by yours truly.

The car made its debut at a friend’s car show that is packed with famous SGV hot rods. While not finished (what weekend car ever is?!) I’m proud of the work and the look of the “new” car. December 2017 | PANDO 31

Thank you to all who have participated in the previous cone zone series. We hope it has added to the enjoyment of the Breakfast Club meeting at Original Mike’s. We’ll continue model types and different types of equipment. A special thank you to everyone who provided ideas for this third cone zone series.

The plan for the monthly Cone Zone themes follows: •

December: Any Porsches with 19” diameter wheels

January 2018: No Porsche Alley Cone Zone – Attend the OCR Brunch!

February 2018: Any Porsche with 20” and up diameter wheels

Cone Zone Themes

We hope December 2017 - February 2018 is self-explanatory. The multitude of Porsche and non-Porsche wheel types displayed in December 2017 and February 2018 should provide a variety of looks for all to admire. I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions.

R MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR R FROHE WEIHNACHTEN UND EIN R GLÜCKLICHES NEUES JAHR R JOYEUX NOËL ET BONNE R ET BONNE ET HEUREUSE ANNÉE R FELIZ NAVIDAD Y PRÓSPERO AÑO NUEVO

November 2017 has flown by so fast, like a 919 Hybrid! 2018 is already in the planning schedule and I will submit a very nice article on front suspension work done by John Nestor, OCR. I want to have a nice open slot for his article so it will be the first thing submitted for next year (2018.) G-series 911/930 problematic electricals I have written about: I had so much to edit out, from so much I thought out, changed, re-drew plans for, then do the actual work, and (of course) the re-dos half-way into it. Then the documentation of the whole thing from first idea to finish the work, and that is the proof of resolving the problem. Only then can I write about it. And what is in print is not nearly covering all the time/work/note taking/pictures/and new in-house wiring diagrams. I had to draw the line and be done with it in a simple article. HA!

These electrical upgrades took up most of 2017 to finish. It was very rewarding, and yet in these jobs one sees another way to do them as well. That being in the middle of a wiring mess you see a simpler, easier, a “why didn’t I think of this before?” kind of thing. I had a number of those and later realized most of them turn out to be not workable. But the mind can play strange tricks on you while you are in the middle of doing these things. I got to see the proof of the concept with Jim Poste’s 930 and then my own “way-over-the-top” major electrical reengineered upgrade on my old 911. But enough on that for now. Winter and old snow seems so far away today. It is CHRISTMAS TIME - WINTER TIME (Dec. ’17) and yet now as I write this it is 102 degrees outside (October 23rd) with a hot Santa Ana blowing. But

NOW it is time I must think about that special someone for Christmas. How about a nice new HAZET tool cabinet for him and the Porsche? Or better yet, how about a Porsche 919 special tool box?

The 919 Tool Box is sold by SSF, made by HAZET, Germany. This is a genuine collector and likely not for the greasy tools, built as well by HAZET tools of Germany. I have owned, used, and nearly worn out my Hazet tools and can say they are the best tools in the world. Quality is everything. December 2017 | PANDO 37

Ok that’s a bit up there, so how about more down to earth? Like a wheel nut cleaning tool?

Some images to think about that we don’t have to be too concerned with our So-Cal Porsches

Porsches can do ANYTHING!

These are found in every auto parts store and I can state they work very well. Snowbound Porsche! Does it make your teeth chatter ?

I was a bit annoyed that it took me so long to try these out, especially as my Ruf-Speedline wheels have that deep inset for the alloy wheel nuts, and that wheel hole gets nasty in there! I truly had an eye-opener experience using one for the first time. $4 - $5 I think?

decorator errand man in a large department store in Columbus, Ohio. There we lived 4-6 months ahead of today. That was fun and a bit exciting to see what is coming for sale ahead of those outside the store. I tried their bulbs years ago and was not too happy with them and forgot about it. But at sunset, twi-light, my instruments are so dimly illuminated it got really annoying, and I installed extra bulb sockets in my instruments, BIG JOB! So I again looked into upgrading to 964 instruments, but besides the expense, they have reliability issues and you cannot change the instrument faces. So that was out! I once again tried LED instrument bulbs. That’s why the plug for “super bright.” These work! They look clear, bright, and do not have that over-electronic bright glare as most LEDs do! 2018 is on the way. Like most things when you are looking forward and knowing it will be different later when this is being read; like back in my first college days, I worked as a stock38 PANDO | December 2017

In a way our Porsches were like that too. We saw smaller cars, smaller engines, using less fuel and fewer consumables were the coming thing. Most other car owners didn’t see that at all. I know, I was one of them. But things change and many realized smaller was not just an idea but the Germans especially engineered a better, more efficient way to make what was needed that not only did the job well, but built with quality and was bringing a new future too. Cases in point were the hands-on engineers trying to tackle auto exhaust pollution in the 1960s. They knew smaller engines make smaller amounts of pollution, or parts per million of smog particles. But why not USE that unburned fuel particle? Racers gave them the first real help with their efforts to squeeze every ounce of power it can from every drop of fuel. That is efficiency. You didn’t need bigger, poorer designed engines, just smaller, better engineered, and built engines, just as the Porsche 356 and 911s have developed over the decades!

It was the same thing in aviation and aerospace developments. Even the huge Porsche 991 and its 4.0 Liter engine are puny compared to most of the big supercharged V-8s and V-12 monsters out there today! And seeing a car still only getting 9-11 miles per gallon today is ridiculous, almost disgraceful. But Porsche, whether it makes a mini, SUV or a Cayenne, Boxster, Cayman or 911, you know it is an efficient machine. So today I have to wonder as we still see today 4,000 pound 800 HP muscle cars and wonder, why? Will we soon see more and more of electric cars and self-driving nonsense? You have to realize a large electric car market NEEDS a new much LARGER power grid. That will have major consequences for present land use and the massive ugliness of needed new power lines! I’ve heard it will take something like an increase of 80% to the power grid? But then too, where does that wonderful clean power come from? HUMmmmmm? Just imagine 8-20 million cars going home at night and being plugged into the existing power system? And that source of power is not modern. Not at all! The power grid is powered by some dams, some wind mills and 85% by OIL, NATURAL GAS, & COAL, and some Nuclear power.

Christmas Carrera!

They are nothing more than glorified giant steam engines, which IS exactly what they are, like “Ma’s old steam pot on the fire” from 150 years ago! More on this subject in 2018. And what are you thinking on this as well? Give us a ‘shout’ and share your ideas in PANDO. It is that time of the year. We can for a minute take a breather, a rest, a time to enjoy the fruit for work of the year. Enjoy the day, the family, and the things that give us hope for a better 2018. Godspeed

IN MEMORIUM Peter Schutz was the true savior of our beloved 911. From the 911s concept and through the years some visionaries always saw potential and new horizons for the 911 concept. Fortunately, Ferry Porsche saw a future for his company in Peter Schutz and his 911 with Peter Schutz.

One of Peter’s many qualities was LISTENING to people; all kinds of people from every place, including us every day owners and drivers. Porsche owners actually celebrated his appointment and saw such glories as the 911 Club Sport, G-50 transaxle, 959 4 wheel-drive “wundercar”, the company wide use of Motronic engine management systems, the fabulous racing 956 and 962s, later came the 911 Carrera Cabriolets and 911Speedsters. Then the 964 4/2 and the 993s.He also saw the future and the need of what became the 996 water era. He will be missed but with every 911 driving by, we see and ‘hear’ a bit of his work as well. So far, we have nearly 70 competitors signed up for our debut at the big A. That’s awesome and so far, so good. But we need about 45 more to reach our goal of 115 competitors. We can do it! If any of you have teetered on whether to give it a try, now you have the best reason to take the leap ... I personally guarantee you will have the time of your life. Sign up now ... No experience necessary!

Is AutoCross the only way to learn how to drive better? It’s a bit intimidating to me. Brand new to all of this. Not sure of the cost of events, what gear I need to buy, or can I rent? Do I need to get different insurance...? Or are there instructional sessions PCA-OCR offers I can sign up for?

Cooper Boggs

Hey Frederick, don’t be intimidated by AutoCross! All you’ll wear out is your tires.

Kelly Tribolet

Went to Alabama to look at a car. Spent today at the Barber track to see the Porsche driving school and museum. It’s a beautiful track and if you love vintage motorcycles a must see! All I can say is WOW!!!

When you sign up through Motorsport Reg. You’ll check the “I’m new” box and you’ll automatically be assigned one of the excellent OCR Auto X instructors. The club also has loaner hemets available. ( You might want to purchase a head sock, balaclava, since sharing helmets can be yucky.) This is all a free part of membership. You will be asked to volunteer your time as a corner worker while others run. As for insurance you’ll have to make a judgement call ... it will be through a private event insurer that does Time Trial or other events. not likely cheap, and most attendees go without.
