The staff of the Pando apologizes that Vanesssa Robles’ Article in the November Issue was edited incorrectly. The term “boxer” was replaced with “Boxster” which is entirely incorrect. The author was “specifically referring to the flat design of the engine and “boxer” is how it is referred to given its flat horizontally opposed piston design (like a boxer) and though not unique to Porsche, it makes the 911 design iconic and contributes to that sound of the engine we all find exceptional. “

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Barry Michaels
Marcia Salans Barry Michaels
‘Tis the Season ‘Tis the season to wish one another joy and love and peace. It is far too easy to get caught up in the noise of daily life and take those we love for granted. On the cusp of a new year let’s all commit to hold our friends close and family closer. ‘Tis also the season for OCR officer election results. We’ll soon learn who will serve the club as President, Vice President and Treasurer for 2020 and 2021. Please join me in thanking these members for volunteering their time and talent for the benefit of all OCR members, and provide your support through helping where and when you can. We are a volunteer driven organization, and without your help nothing happens.
‘Tis also the season to party. Please celebrate the season with your fellow OCR members at our Holiday at the Harbor dinner, which will be at the Dana Point Yacht Club on December 21st. There is still time to register for this outstanding event. Please see the OCR website calendar for details on this and our many other club events. The new year will soon be here. Here’s to a year of blessings and joy.

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington
F1 MAVERICKS: The Men and Machines that Revolutionized Formula 1 Racing by Peter Brio and George Levy. published August, 2019 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA If you do not recognize the author’s names from their work with Road & Track, Car and Driver, Autoweek, etc., then maybe the Foreword by Mario Andretti and the Afterword by Nicki Lauda will help you believe in the credibility of this book. Very well illustrated with different pictures on the front and back covers, and covers uniquely devoid of writing. Front and back end papers have two more great, two-page spread pictures. The ‘publishers page’ provides good captions for the cover pictures, except strangely, for the rear end paper which shows a gaggle of racers heading downhill to Eau Rouge at the start of the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. The horizontal format is very fitting to the lo-profile, cigar shaped bodies of the prewing racers of the ‘60s and early ‘70s. It is a book about racing, essentially a chronology of Formula 1 racing from 1958 through 1982. Interspersed between race reports are pages profiling the ‘maverick’ designers, team managers and car owners, and what they did to stand out from the crowd. The race reports themselves are interesting discussions of the highlights of the event, not statistical data about who passed whom and who finished where in the standings. Though there is an index, there is no summary page listing the Mavericks described; they are not even alluded to in the race-year titles of the 14 chapters. You have to peruse the entire book to appreciate all of the Mavericks
profiled. A very nice touch for the casual reader is that the chapter number and the chapter title are printed at the lower corners of the left and right pages respectively. In this 25 year period, the previous fifty odd years of race car evolution was submerged by a revolution of lasting changes – from front engine to rear-engine, from Carburetors to Fuel Injection, from naturally aspirated to and turbo charging, from tall skinny tires to low fat ones, etc. and perhaps most significant of all; from a mentality of racing as a sport to one of racing as big business. If you are interested in the historic people of F1 racing, or even the development of motorsport technology in general, F1 MAVERICKS is a must have. Nowhere else can one find within the covers of a single book, such a breadth of biographical info about the individuals and cars which made significant impacts on Formula 1 racing. Though Roger Penske did not make it to Maverick status, his PC4 Formula 1 car is shown, and a Porsche F1 car is mentioned as secondary to the 917 program.
Not a topic covered in the book, but it is striking to this reviewer how prominent were the car numbers used in those days. Though the significant differences in car design made many of them instantly recognizable, the big, bright numbers made it very easy to follow a driver’s progress through the pack. Since approximately 1977, race car-oriented wind tunnels with rolling ground planes (and regulations) have led to the homogenization of body shapes, making prominent numbers even more useful, just when they started to get lost in all the advertising graphics. F1 MAVERICKS is hard bound, with 240 heavyweight 11x9 inch pages and 300 color and b&w photos, many of which are a full page. It should be available for $50 from your favorite book seller (ask for it) or from quartoknows.com

Hearts and Garages Tour 2019
October 12,
Story by Glenn Billings Photos by Gary Ambrose, Pete Lech and Monica Asbury
Southern California’s autumn usually arrives with cooler
temperatures and is often punctuated with unbearably hot Santa Ana winds. Fortunately, this year on October 12th, the winds subsided, and over 110 PCA-OCR members were greeted with a sunny warm day and calm blue skies. The 18th annual “Hearts and Garages” tour, coordinated by Pete and Judy Lech, was a phenomenal success. Additional assistance was provided by Gloria Moore, Carolyn Quant, and Eileen Young. While parking guides Larry Moore and Brian Quant helped to fit an amazing number of Porsches on the street and overflowing onto the receptive neighbors’ driveways. Along with registration and parking, several people also photographed the event for Pando including Gary Ambrose and Monica Asbury.

Vi s i t i n g these multicar garages was definitely on par with the hosts’ homes and seemed to echo “houses are what you live in but the garages are what you live for!” Stop 1 - Appetizers : Our tour event had four stops, each being one course of a four-course dinner. Our gathering started at Pete and
Stop 1 - Appetizers : Hosted by Pete and Suzanne Alexander
Suzanne Alexander’s Tuscan style Villa in Fullerton. Along with fruits, nuts, stuffed grape leaves and vegetable plates, inside the Alexander’s five-bar car port were a Carrera S, 3.8 GT3 6 speed manual, 911 turbo S, a Carrera GTS and a 1965 air-cooled 911 with only 75,000 miles on it. Its owner doesn’t drive it a lot but shows it in Concours d’ Elegance events. After an hour of appetizers and conversation, a framed “Hearts and Garages Tour Thank You Certificate,” and bottle of champagne were presented to Pete and Suzanne for an excellent kick-off to the rest of the day. Stop 2 - Salads : Getting our route instructions for garage 2, we ventured away from Fullerton and 9.8 miles later, arrived at Lisa Taylor’s converted horse ranch in Yorba Linda. What once were horse

stables are now occupied by a dizzying array of rainbow colored GT2RS, GT3, GT3RS, Targa and a 911T. In another part of the property were a yellow Ferrari Italia and a beautiful McLaren. In a previous Michelin interview, Lisa was asked how many Porsches she owns and with wry smile, responded “I won’t tell how many.” Additionally, numerous member cars were carefully parked and packed into the driveway. A bountiful array of salads with all the accouterments were provided and consumed, and after we all enjoyed looking at the cars and various other auto memorabilia, a “Thank You Certificate” was given to our gracious hosts, Lisa Taylor and Tom Ridings. As hectic and chaotic as the turnaround was in the driveway, we all left in good order for the main course, a 25.4-mile jaunt to Newport Coast, with our hosts John and Jeff Saroyan. Stop 3 - Main Course : It was late afternoon and being near the Pacific Ocean, finding parking for our group was not a problem since our hosts live in a cul de sac with plenty of spaces up and down the street. As we walked up to the house, a pristine yellow Cayman GT4 stares at us with its under-the-house garage companion, a gull winged

Mercedes Benz SLR. Also in the garage were four Ferraris (F-40 and a California amongst them,) four Porsches, one being a 2004 Carrera GT. After feasting on our entrée, which was Mexican fare, and meandering through his immaculate garage, Pete and Judy Lech presented the “Hearts and Garages Tour Thank You Certificate” to John and Jeff. It was a little difficult leaving the rich environment of Pelican Hills, but dessert was waiting for us at house four, our final destination. Stop 4 - Dessert : San Juan Capistrano was a 27.1 drive, and dusk when we arrived. Parking about fifty cars, with two long empty parallel streets was not a problem. We capped off the evening with chocolate cake pops, cupcakes and Porsche embossed cookies with Porsche water. The garage looked like it took up half the house and contained 3 new silver Boxster S’s in perfect condition suitably

outshining the spotless floors and walls that were covered with vintage and modern racing posters and prints. Our hosts this time were Jerry and Joy Dunton. They respectively turned the nighttime soiree over to Vanessa Keane. She and other Marine Corps wives started the Semper Fi fund for returning injured vets from Iraq and Afghanistan. Remarkably, they have raised over $205 million dollars helping 23,000 service men. One such marine, now retired, Paul McQuidd, told his story of his injuries suffered with shrapnel to his face in an IUD attack. Despite operations on his jaw and the loss of part of his tongue, he still leads an active life as a SCUBA diving instructor. With the final “Hearts and Garages Thank You Certificate” given out to our hosts, we presented our collected donations to the Semper Fi Fund and we were back in our cars and scattered into the night on our way home from a wonderful day, wonderful hosts and wonderful cars.
Stop 4 - Dessert : Hosted by Jerry and Joy Dunton
Additional Note from the Tour Organizers: Many thanks to the volunteer hosts, the registration and parking helpers; and to Denny Asbury for the custom artwork he created for this year’s Tour.

oad Scholars, a vintage Porsche restoration shop, took home a First in Class win with a rare (1 of 20) 1961 Porsche Carrera Abarth GTL, owned by the renowned Ingram Collection, at the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance.m In ordinary circumstances, this would be a great accomplishment on its own, but this one has its own special story.

On April 10, 2019 a gas leak explosion in Durham, North Carolina took the lives of two people. It also damaged the building that housed the Ingram Collection, one of the most significant Porsche collections in the world. One of the cars in that collection was the 1961 Porsche Carrera Abarth GTL chassis #1008 that had already been accepted to be on the lawn at Pebble Beach on August 17, 2019, just four months away. “The morning of the gas leak explosion we actually were going down to the Ingram Collection to pick up the Abarth. We were collecting it to do the prep work for Pebble Beach which was on the calendar to be completed,” said Cam Ingram, owner of Road Scholars. “Once we were able to get the car to the shop after the explosion, we completed a full analysis and realized the car needed a full-blown restoration.” The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance features some of the most significant cars in the world and is highly recognized as the most prestigious car show around. Cars restored for this event usually take most shops on average 2-3 years to complete.“We were very lucky, once we stripped the car down to bare metal, it’s probably the nicest car we have ever taken apart. The aluminum body and chassis were in totally original unblemished condition. This is extremely rare for a competition factory race car,” Ingram said. On Aug. 10, the Carrera Abarth was picked up, fully restored, and shipped to Monterey, California to be shown on the lawn at the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance. “It’s actually been a laborious undertaking to restore a car in four months to this level but also one of the most pleasant surprises and rewarding experiences we have ever had at Road Scholars. We had a dedicated team working seven days a week and accumulated over 5,000 hours of restoration work in order to reach Pebble Beach. It would have never been possible if the condition of the original body and chassis wasn’t in such greatshape,” said Cam Ingram. 22 PANDO | December 2019

At Pebble Beach Despite Explosion.
This marks the fifth time Road Scholars has shown at Pebble Beach Concours and is also the fifth award given to a car Road Scholars has restored, including a 1949 Porsche Gmund owned by the Porsche family (First in Class - 2011). “It’s a huge victory to just be invited to Pebble Beach, and incredibly difficult to podium there. It’s the best of the best. Winning class there is like winning the Super Bowl in the automotive concours world. I am so proud of our dedicated and talented team. We have pulled off a herculean feat and were fortunate enough to be recognized for all our efforts,” Ingram said.

TRIP THROUGH TIME
I love to drive, and I love to drive my Porsche. Getting to drive my Porsche on mountain roads, to see a whole slew of great Porsches, all in a neatly arranged line, is why I found myself on Saturday the 28th of September heading to Lake Arrowhead. However, the drive was not quite what I anticipated. The Riverside chapter of PCA was hosting their annual Porsche timeline, in which they try to line up a Porsche from every year of production. The Porsches are parked on a winding path all through the charming and picturesque Arrowhead Village. I had attended this event a few years earlier, saw some great cars, ran into some friends, and had an all-around terrific time. The Orange Coast region had organized a ride up to Arrowhead, but I couldn’t make it to Riverside by 8:00 am, so off I went by myself in my ’11 Carrera GTS. The OCR email about their organized ride had mentioned a SMALL threat of rain. Well, the threat was more than small, as it drizzled, or rained, for the entire drive. What wasn’t mentioned was the threat of fog, and wow was it foggy. In fact, it was “I can’t see where the road is going,” foggy at some points. The only option was to slow way down, rarely the best option in a P-car, but the only sensible one in this case. With some (but surely not all) of the enjoyment of the drive lessened, I was happy to arrive in Arrowhead Village around 9:30 a.m. with no dings, dents, or disasters. As a bonus, I was early enough (I arrived before the OCR group) to get a place in the corral. I commiserated with some of the folks parked near me about the semi-miserable drive, and the talk inevitably turned to set-up, handling, tunes, track days, Autocross, and PDK vs. manual. I’ve had these conversations so many times, but I always enjoy them, and I always learn something. Wandering into the Village, I walked toward the lake and saw the Riverside Porsche Tent with a huge box of donuts calling my name. I didn’t answer, and focused instead on the brand new Panamera, and GT3 RS in front of me. Walking further, I saw a striking yellow GT3 RS, sitting by itself, juxtaposed against the foggy lake. The sky had been either dripping or leaking the entire time, and the raindrops only brought the car into sharper focus.

4. A quaint setting for two ferocious cars.
oving on, the timeline really began, and the row of Porsches was very striking next to the soft outlines of the docks and the lakeshore in the fog. Terrific cars abounded, but I soon came to an early favorite – since the line in my direction of travel was going from newest to oldest – a 991.1 50th Anniversary Edition in grey. I love the houndstooth seats, the retro gauges, the chrome on the rear deck air intake, and the Fuchs homage wheels. Peeling myself away from that beauty, I then moved into the land of the 997s, with a dark blue cab and a deep green coupe were the standouts for me. Since my car is a 997.2, I am partial to that vintage. The 996s and early Boxsters were next in the rainy lineup. The cold did not prevent me from appreciating a beautiful black 996, done up in Martini Racing livery. Off on a little side spur was a Guards Red 996 Targa, with chrome Turbo Twist wheels. That car had a unique and very well cared-for look. Climbing the hill into the Village proper, a gorgeous silver 944 Turbo caught my eye. Cresting the hill revealed a brand-new, deep red, Panamera e-Hybrid which pinned my “I want one” meter. Parked in front of one of the quainter buildings in the Village were a grey 930 and a white factory slant-nose. Those cars afforded quite an interesting contrast, since a 930 and a slant-nose are anything but quaint. Further on, a deep blue and orange 930 popped up and shocked the senses a bit. The almost – but not quite – Gulf Racing livery was very arresting, and the paint job appeared to be impeccable. I began chatting with the owner and learned that he had done the paint work on the 930 himself. I don’t trust myself with a touch-up stick, and he painted his entire classic car! A lovely (what else?) Guards Red 930 led to an olive green 914, and into a covey of 356s. A mid- ‘60s red cab, a black coupe, and a red late- ‘50s coupe all dripped rainwater proudly in the cold. The 356s had me wishing I had an unlimited automotive budget. I couldn’t resist walking the timeline a few more times, weather be damned, and I noticed different details about each car each time through. Although there appeared to be fewer cars this year than when I had previously visited (maybe due to the inclement weather), the quality of the cars was excellent, and anytime there are forty or more Porsches in one place, it’s hard to complain. Since Oktoberfest in Arrowhead Village was just beginning, beer and sausages were everywhere. Resisting the massive temptation, as I had been all day with all those cars, I entered a lovely restaurant, had a delicious lunch overlooking the lake, and also had an excellent chat with two OCR Region members having lunch next to me. With my car parked in the corral, I had one last look around, and saw some fantastic rolling stock including a bright green ‘70s 911, and two virtually identical 993 C4Ss parked side-by-side, whose owners did not seem to know each other! The drive down the mountain was just as foggy, soggy and rainy (and sometimes scary), but near sea level the sun was peeking through, and the road opened up. It was the perfect ending to a nearly perfect day. See you all at next year’s Timeline and thanks to the Riverside Chapter for such an enjoyable event.

W av & W heels or Porsches & Boats, That Is!
iving in a house with a small beach and dock in front of it in Newport Beach, was my early life centered on things on the water. Our family built small wooden boats (less than 20 feet) at home as a hobby, which was interesting and taught me more about my favorite subject, boats. I loved things that moved by sail or power, but it was sailing that captivated me, movement by windpower and how to go faster. Sailing lessons began very young in sailboats and racing was my favorite part. Frequent invitations to race and cruise on sailboats belonging to neighbors and friends just heightened my interest. Visiting family friends on Maui in 1962 just increased my growing passion for boats and being on the water.
Divorced parents led to my Mom and Stepdad living in West Maui, which provided opportunities in my early teens and beyond to sail around the Hawaiian Islands. This resulted in many unique water experiences like watching squalls move nearby, waterspouts, enjoying Bluefin Tuna sashimi in small coves and harbors, all such beautiful places. I will always remember the surfing, fishing, diving and hiking adventures, finding wild guava and following streams up as far as possible, more than once to a beautiful secluded waterfall. Amazing to see so many sea-dwellers in their natural habitat including sharks, eels and other fish species; even shrimp and algae in the most pristine locations, and one very memorable 28 feet long whale shark miles from shore. Boats made this possible. While I spent significant time on boats, I also developed a genuine interest in sports cars, initially an MGB-GT but at about age 20, I purchased my first Porsche, a 1962 356B Roadster. I purchased it from someone I worked with after he’d completed an engine rebuild that increased the engine’s displacement and carburetion. Truly, I had my perfect car. The 356 was brilliant and better than I had imagined it would be. This was the beginning of six Porsches, each of which was meaningful to me and enjoyable in somewhat different ways. Surprisingly, as a senior in college my dad brought a new 36-foot powerboat into our lives. Although I loved sailboats and was racing then, the time spent on the powerboat in the Channel Islands scuba diving, exploring and occasionally surfing showed there were things a powerboat could do best, especially when time was limited. 32 PANDO | December 2019
Working as a Commercial Real Estate Broker in my twenties had allowed me a certain amount of freedom, and due to a shift of family priorities on Maui, I acquired the 30-foot sailboat and spent as much time with it as possible. Subsequently, marriage and a young daughter meant saying goodbye to the Maui boat. Some years without any Porsche in the family, as I had used my 1976 911S as a partial real estate down payment and the 1977 930 was not an ideal ‘only’ vehicle for me to have with a young daughter. I participated in racing larger sailboats as years went by, and enjoyed contributing to making the racing successful. I learned about achieving more speed under sail and always enjoying the time on the water. With a good deal of work, everything can come together and the boats could perform their best against the competition, which was very satisfying. For many years I participated in about twenty races a year, which is a definite commitment. Time on the water cleared the mind of everyday worries and brought clarity to other things. The Porsches brought to mind something similar, the excellence of engineering & design gives us vehicles that are highly satisfying, even doing mundane errands. Memorable drives on Pacific Coast Highway to Monterey, on mountain roads in the fall and drives at higher speeds in certain desert locations brought a whole additional dimension to the cars’ excellence and also brought a similar mind-clearing clarity. From 2001 to 2017 I worked in Harbor Administration, ending as the Manager of Oceanside Harbor. Currently, I am retired with the same powerboat that surprised me as a college senior and the good fortune to have a 2011 GT3RS and a 2009 Carrera S Cabriolet (that often reminds me of the 356 I would love to have now!)

HO-HO-HO &
The feelings of “wonderment” for machines formulated from many old dreams and through many of those articles about machines and men who made them work.
Happy Holiday Season to all you Porsche Pushers!
L ast month I gave my 2 cents worth on
magazines I call “rags,” sometimes in a bit of contempt and occasionally appreciation. I got a reminder on one I forgot to mention that I read, love and keep it sometimes. That is Octane. The feelings of “wonderment” for machines formulated from many old dreams and through many of those articles about machines and men who made them work. I learned a lot of what steam engines, airplanes, and cars are really about. Few car rags do that anymore, regrettably. But Octane is one that revived things I had forgotten, so you see, I am a fan. Early on, I got the machinery interest at age 5-6, I believe, and my first was for the “1285.” That is the Southern Pacific #1285 steam engine. The steam, smoke, and the white hot fire that emitted from gaps in the underside of the engine was all quite frightening. But I was also fascinated. I was hooked early on. As a little kid I got to ride the Del Monte Express from San Francisco to Monterey to see our Grandparents. Of course I had to go ‘visit’ the steam engine after the family hugs and kisses. More than once I got a vented blast of steam as my Grandfather gave the engineer the ‘OK.’ I jumped, but loved it! Maybe it was an anointing?

North American Aviation F-86A Sabre The With my father, I changed loves. It was the North American Aviation F-86A Sabre to be exact. It was so outrageously loud and powerful and yet so beautiful and graceful. I learned to love the curves and swept angles of its advanced air frame and acquired a love of the aluminum it was made from. That jet engine was another leap in fascination. The high pitch scream of a General Electric J-47 Turbojet was new to me and everyone else. It was scary, interesting, and captivating. My Dad told me “...in 10 years we’ll all be flying in swept wing jet airliners, and think
nothing of it.” I couldn’t conceive of it, but not for long. It was a steep learning curve for a 10 year old. But it is as much a passion now as it was in 1953. Then cars. I had no car interest in them at all until one May 30th. I heard the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on radio with my dad. Those loud, ‘barking’ and grunting Offenhauser and Novi engines sounded like big dump trucks as they left the pits and starting line. But then, a few laps later, the roar turned more into a high pitch shrill and gave me shivers! My dad explained to me all December 2019 | PANDO 35
WHAZ THIS? With the ever increasing demand on electrical systems, alternators are generating more heat to go along with the wattage demand. Thus, the need for more efficient cooling. That said, Prof. Porsche is, of course, AIR.

the intricacies of a racing dual overhead camshaft racing engine. He also said that the precision of driving one was much like what our Air Force fighter pilots had to learn to do. WOW!
Fig 2 . Now the 2017 RUF CTR is AIR-COOLED, Alternator that is.
The excitement! And maybe some magic? It was however, everything that was expected.
Then I recall, vividly a TV commercial for Shell Gasoline. Phil Hill narrated the problem with ordinary gasoline with his Ferrari ‘sputtering’ as it went through the gears on a race track. Then it was fueled up with Shell’s new gas. This was, I think around 1957. Then the Ferrari made a sound like music. Music like an Italian opera singer. It was one of the loveliest sounds I ever heard and from that day on, there is nothing like a V (or Flat) twelvecylinder engine! NOTHING!!
And me and my ‘ole 2.0 Liter, 130 HP, 911 (then), it sang all the way to max revs every time. I ran two full tanks filled with gas on one weekend, all at speed! And NO problems! Oh, and I was (really) using Super-Shell gasoline, do you suppose? What started all this is a thankfulness that I try to never forget. We Porsche owners (and even you lease holders) have something very special, and as it is an accomplishment of our lives and dreams, Christmas brings that to mind as we think about family, the old and new things in life and what’s to come in the future.
Oh, and that race track in that commercial? I believe it was then the old course at Riverside. And 24 years later, I was driving my Porsche 911 on that very same race track! Oh, the glory! The expectation!
I’ve always expected to get into a V-12 Ferrari, someday, but as my brother told me many times, “Do you want to drive for a few weeks and wait months for parts, or move up to a genuinely excellent

engineered machine that runs all the time, that is a Porsche 911.” And 49 years later, it’s still true. So enjoy and be forever thankful for the great country, life, and ability to have something as special as your Porsche.
