Hat’s off to each and everyone one of you for your support and participation in our somewhat tumultuous last quarter. For most, change is not their favorite pass time; however, we have really proven to be an organization galvanized by our club’s people, Porsches and passion. Your Board of Directors placed a
risk threshold on the Christmas party with a deadline set for the end of October. Our members rallied and met the minimum numbers (by the way, the event has a wait list so you can still sign up). Thank you for your interest and attention to our time dependent request. Contained within this publication you will see the annual slate for the Board of Directors. We are blessed this year to have almost double the candidates for the available board spots, Thank you to those volunteering. Please don’t forget to cast your vote, let’s shatter all prior years of participation. Over the last six years of my involvement with the club, I have never felt the level of energy we are currently experiencing. Based on our current momentum, 2014 is shaping up to be our best year ever. Consider making a commitment to yourself and try out some of our new

or different events, you will make new friends and have a great time. The holiday season is upon us and I would personally like to wish you the happiest of holidays. Certainly, some of our members, especially those with “garage queen” cars, may be a bit conflicted when faced with the question of enjoying your car today versus having your car touched by rain for the first time. My personal experience has been that the time spent in your vehicle, enjoying the sounds and the exhilarating feeling we all get from these wonderful German machines, always trumps the time spent cleaning your car after Mother Nature has finished her work. Maybe your New Year’s resolution will be to simply DRIVE!

Editor’s Notes Story by Garey Cooper plot madness and mayhem for AD 2014. It is hard to believe that 2013 is on “the cusp”, that is nearly over. Of course we all say that each year, at least most of us of a certain vintage do so. It has been a very fun car year for me with lots of adventuresome drives and of course lots of OCR activity. I hope that as you reflect there are few regrets and that you will be happy to have been in our club and can say that you have at least been to one event or more.
Handsome retired devil, he is!
December nights, clear, cold and bright. Inside we talk and remember summers delight. Cars and people, roads and fun. High in the quiet confines of the OCR tower, your club nabobs and mandarins
Changes, Turn and face the news… our car company, Porsche, is on the move. It is quite interesting that the ownership group wants Porsche to be a full supplier of cars throughout the stages of car ownership. To do this so far they have the extended Panamera and Cayenne lines, added the Boxster and its hard top sibling the Cayman. Porsche is rumoring 3 introductions at the Los Angeles Auto Show, tradition-
ally the first of any calendar year. The first is almost certainly the “Macan”, which will be a smaller version of the Cayenne. The size relationship is about the same as the Audi Q7 to the Q5. Although Porsche will use platform details, they are quite adamant in stating that the Porsche version SUVs are quite distinct in engineer, suspension and all details that keep their “Porscheness” and flavor. I am not certain how all of that comes about, but I can say that having driven both the Cayenne and the Q7 they are vastly different except perhaps in dimension. After the Macan however, the rumor mill is spinning tales of a “GTS” version of either the Boxster or the Cayman, or both perhaps. Also rumored is the Cabriolet version of the Turbo 991, and just toss in the potential appearance of the Targa version 991. So, at the beginning of the year it will be a full set of new toys from Porsche. Downwind and per a local dealer (to me) who will remain nameless, (Continued on Page 29)

Book Review:
PORSCHE 911: 50 Years By Randy Leffingwell, published on 20 October, 2013 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN. Review by Bruce Herrington Randy Leffingwell’s books are always a visual delight. This book is much more than a book of pictures of 50 years of 911s, and really, it is more than a book about 911s. The initial chapter tells more about the evolution of Porsche designs in the ‘50s and early ‘60s, and the design numbers involved, than this reviewer has seen anywhere else. The publisher calls this book “The definitive history of one of Porsche’s most storied and enduring cars. Featuring over 200 photos, extensive interviews and inside looks....” To this reviewer, they are selling their book short: it has many more than 200 photos and the interviews documented inside cover much more that just “one of Porsche’s... cars”. Unlike previous Leffingwell books, the majority of the many pictures are not by him, but come from the Porsche Archiv instead. Similarly, most of the words are by factory employees describing their experiences over the years with Porsche AG. Really, this book functions as the Porsche Factory History, collected, compiled and edited by Randy Leffingwell. Though the title is very timely and meaningful, this book does deal with the vehicles and design efforts produced over the dozen or so years leading up to the first production 901. It also touches on the ‘alternate’ vehicles which have carried the Porsche name during the 911 era. Particularly interesting to this reviewer is the number of photographs of full-scale mockups of design alternatives for the 901, many with competing designs on each side of a single mockup. PORSCHE 911: 50 Years is not a sequence of write-ups on the 911s of each of the 50 years they have been produced. In fact, the book is divided into only four chapters: Collision Course; Evolution Version 1.0; Evolution Version 2.0; and Racing the 911. The first three chapters flow as continuously as did the design evolution of Porsche automobiles.
Porsche has generally presented a solid, focused image to the outside world, but this book clearly documents infighting between design teams and the on-going schisms that occurred between those promoting the evolutionary ‘next Porsche’, and those advocating a revolutionary ‘new Porsche’. Many significant members of the Porsche design team left, for whatever reason, only to return to even more significant leadership posts. Perhaps the best illustration of the thoroughness and completeness of the research on which this book is based is the coverage given to the controversy over what material should be used for constructing the mockups of proposed designs. Much of the story is told in first person by individuals both known and un-known. The collection and compilation of all these recollections and reminiscences must have been a major effort, but the result provides an un-matchable, never to be improved upon, insight into
the projects and personalities involved in the first half-century of Porsche AG. PCA has its slogan “It’s not the cars it’s the people”. Porsche 911 50 Years is not just about the cars; it’s perhaps even more about the people of Porsche. It surly will be a classic that every Porsche enthusiast must have in his/her library, along with Ludvigsen’s Excellence Was Expected. There are 256 pages with 500 pictures, half in color. A very comprehensive index is included. By the time you read this, PORSCHE 911 should be available for $50.00 from your favorite bookseller or from http://www.motorbooks.com.
1952 PORSCHE TYP 530 Early design boss Erwin Komenda proposed this lumpen Typ 530 as a replacement for Porsche’s precursor to the 911, the 356. Caught awkwardly between the adorable symmetry of this forebear and the 911’s raked back, the 530 nevertheless was the starting point for more than a decade’s worth of development. The Ladies of PORSCHE Story by Pamela Horton and comments from the Ladies of OCR PCA
It has been my experience while being a member of the Porsche Club of America, Orange Coast Region that the ladies I have met are some the most lively and intelligent women I have ever encountered. We come from varying backgrounds and are of all ages. Yet we all have a passion for Porsches. It’s this synergy of intelligence, beauty and joy of driving our cars that brings us a commonality… Porsche Passionate we are indeed! So it is with this in mind that I decided to dedicate this holiday cover photo and article to these incredible ladies – The Ladies of Porsche - with whom I am fortunate to know and share great times, whether it is at meetings, ralleys, group outings, holiday parties or autocross. Each and every single one of us truly enjoys being with the others. One of the first outings I recall was the trip to Glen Ivy Spa in October 2008. The tour was led by Maryann Marks through Ortega Canyon with a stop at the overlook at Lake Elsinore. The day was filled with activities including a yummy and healthy lunch. The first group activity was the mud baths. Very muddy! After which we all had different treatments and massages at the spa. A lovely day was had by all and it was a true bonding experience. Autocross became a passion of mine as soon as I heard Armand Gastello talk about it at one of my first Saturday meet-

ings at Old Mike’s. So, being smitten, I have been racing around the cones at El Toro and sometimes on the course at the speedway in Fontana for the last 4 years. There aren’t a lot of women who autocross but those who are truly dedicated to the sport and are really good drivers. viding hot cider or ice, depending on the weather. One of our true stars of autocross is Christine Newcomer. She races a very fast time at every event and has been a big help to me in cutting down my time. She organizes the autocross events each month; no small task as all of you must know. Christine and I have become good friends on and off the track. (Continued on Page 12)

The Ladies of Porsche: There are many other fun activities that not just the women enjoy. Lots of couples have come along on the yearly garden tour and visits to beautiful museums & gardens, such as the Huntington Library and gardens and the Getty Villa. Patricia Lynn is a trouper and is always willing to be the carpool “mom” and shuttle lots of ladies to save on parking, and especially nice on high traffic days. Some of our sponsors have put on tech sessions especially for the ladies so they were not uncomfortable asking car questions. And lots of gents showed up at these as well though there were enough women that you could ask anything and not feel unintelligent. Our visit to Huntington Library and Gardens in August of 2010 was a true highlight event. We had a wonderful time touring the various gardens grouped together by plant types; desert, Asian, etc. We had a delicious lunch in the restaurant and in true Pasadena style the lunch included tea and scones. And now I will turn it over to the Ladies for their quotes and comments on the PCA OCR Ladies Group Events! “The PCA-OCR Ladies Social Group is dedicated to having fun. It is a wonderfully diverse, friendly, down-to-earth and congenial group of strong and interesting women who happen to have Porsches (or a connection to a Porsche), but the focus of the ladies group outings and get-togethers is always more than just a car thing. I have personally made several very good friends and acquaintances through our group, as we enjoyed garden tours, museum outings, a play, movie nights, lunches, dinners, happy hours and parties together. The cars brought us together, but it is the women themselves that make it so much fun!” Toni Schmidt “I ‘m so lucky to know the lovely ladies of the Porsche Club and other members. I feel honored to be a participant in the FUN events like our photo shoot with the Porsche car girls and Santa! I am also looking forward to the upcoming holiday happenings!” Janine Cormier “The Green Genie” “Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Our Ladies’ Christmas Party has always been

the most memorable for me. Ladies all dressed in their merriest Christmas best, bringing Secret Santa Ornaments to share. A great way to end the year!” Angie Griffis “In May we had a wonderful “ladies night” at So Coast Plaza for viewing of the garden show. I had no idea how large an area was used for the show and the wide variety of plants and flowers that I had not been introduced to before. In addition we shared a very appetizing sushi happy hour up on the third floor. Met some ladies I had seen before, but prior to that had not had the opportunity to visit and get to know a little. Was a lovely evening, enjoyed it very much. I truly wish I had more time to attend these well put together outings.” Katie Hargrave “The OCR Porsche Ladies group is one of the most diverse group of ladies I’ve belonged to. We share not only our love of Porsches, but our spare time to relax from the world with each other for great conversation, fun & lots of laughter.” CHRISTINE aka CSROCKT
“My favorite is our Christmas gettogethers graciously hosted by Connie Summers!” Dianne Goodrich “I loved the Adamson House we toured last Spring. The ride to Malibu was great fun, the tour and history was amazing, but the friends we share our time with are priceless.” Lorraine Collyer “I’ve made so many lovely friends because of the PCA-OCR Women’s Group. It’s so nice to be able to spend time with other Porsche enthusiasts without having to discuss horsepower, or tire pressures!” Laura M. Taeger “I love the variety of activities in the club, but I don’t believe I would have gotten active without the ladies group where I found wonderful, warm, lifelong friends who brought life to the club for me.” Maryann V. Marks

Rice’s Ramblings:
Porsche 911 & Bosch CDI Story by Lee Rice
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAYS What’s new on Santa’s gift list for Porsche wishers? Santa has lots of friends in the M86, M96 IMS bearing fix it profession. If that is a concern of yours feel fortunate that good ‘ole American ingenuity finds such problem solvers as the IMS Guardian. Now that Porsche has found favor with a force– fed paddle shift upon it’s faithful followers, there arises an even better way to ‘paddle’, or ‘flip’, a shift. Champion Motorsports offers a improved P.D.K in your own way. Champion Motorsports Paddle Shift Conversion replaces the “awkwardly placed buttons on the front of the steering wheel with “properly placed paddles on the rear of the steering wheel allowing the driver to keep hands in an optimal position and firmly grip the steering wheel.” See the Champion Motorsports ad in all Porsche magazines. ‘Porsche wear’ Dealers are now offering new jackets and apparel with Martini Racing logos from the 1970s racing days. Another retro that is definitely odd to me, is the selling of “Steve McQueen clothing”. The Steve McQueen I saw on track and elsewhere was more of a T-Shirt and jeans guy. His driving won him respect everywhere he raced and BTW his film “Le Mans “ is still the best racing movie ever made ~period! [Do you have a differing opinion? Give us a call or e-mail] NEW BOOKS: Books are great for the Holidays when Porsches are tucked away ‘til spring (I still think of Ohio winters when I write about
Christmas) Maybe we only get a frost warning or a whole half inch of rain, but how about a new book anyway? I received a nice birthday book from my brother and Porsche mentor, John. Porsche 911 Turbo Air Cooled Years 1975 - 1998 By Andreas Gabriel from BMB Berlin Motor Books. I love the 930 Turbo in almost any form but hot rods or RS-ized are my personal favorites. The 911 Turbo, insiders know it as “930,” is after all a hand built 911 RSR with a turbocharged engine, luxury interior, fitting out and a high price. Its worth every penny and not one is selling for less than when it was new! But it is a 911 Hot Rod! Porsche 911 turbo is written as if it had been written when Turbos were introduced to the world in 1975. The text is in German and English, as Christophorus was in those days. The photographs are fabulous: Clear and precise imaging. I am always amazed to find that I have not seen every photograph of my favorite 911 and racecars but new photos of those old days keep coming out. (as we see in our own PANORAMA) With the press introduction of the 911 Turbo, in 1974/5 many people thought Porsche, specifically Dr Ferry Porsche, went mad offering a new and more powerful “Sports Car” to a world experiencing cut-off supplies of crude oil and escalating gasoline prices. Worse yet, it was difficult to buy more than a few gallons of gasoline at a time, and after at least a 30-minute wait in a long line, if the station didn’t run out of gas before your turn! So what does Porsche do after all the other carmakers dumped their big engines and large whale sized sedans for mini putt-putt- econo cars? Porsche proudly offers a turbocharged car that gives Porsche membership in the “Super Car Club” with equal status to the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes, Jaguar, Corvette, Cobra, etc etc. As we were to discover. the 911 Turbo could out run, out last and completely out live all of them! After all, the 911 turbo was built the same exact way as all it’s 911 forerunners with quality and pride -giving us the very best of driving. 911 turbo recalls how Alfred Büchi’s
DECEMBER 2013
patent of using the otherwise wasted power of exhaust gas could be used as a power source for supercharging in the 1920s. This was the concept of applying the exhaust driven supercharger (turbocharger) to a small engine to provide the same or higher power of much larger engines. History has told how the US Army Air Force used turbochargers for aircraft to fly high and fast during WWII with the P-38 & P-47 fighters as well as the B-17, B-24, and B-29s. Turbos found favor in diesel trucks, INDY 500 racers, Chevrolet Corvairs, and Oldsmobile F-85s. However, road cars benefited relatively small gains with them, as development had not caught up with the novelty of turbo charging. The world’s manufactures did not yet know how to make use of their potential. 911 turbo reveals how it was Porsche that struggled through the technical problems of taming the tremendous power of turbo-charging for road racing and then road driving. Porsche discovered the secret to giving us a mild mannered car-off boost, but with caution -explosive power when desired. How about a subscription to 9 Magazine. It has interesting insights and great photographs. In fact, they beat everyone with a spy shot of the new 991 GT2. How we wish Porsche would race their Turbo! It’s been 14 years since the 993GT2 raced and won. The original concept of the 996 GT2 was as a follow up to the 993 GT2 but rule changes rendered it into being just a “wild drivers Porsche”. Politics! My kind of Porsche guy Mike, a happy 911SC daily driver is my (Continued on Page 33)

A Porsche “Leg Stretching” Opportunity Story & Captions by Keith Clark Have you ever been driving on a wonderful road someplace in a vehicle other than your Porsche wishing you were in your Porsche? Have you ever had that desire to visit an area of the American West that is characterized by gorgeous landscape, amazing roads, less congestion and that sense of freedom that you can go just about any where you like? Wouldn’t it be nice to experience all that with good food and other like-minded, fun people? Yep! Me too. About two dozen other Orange Coast region members decided they, too, wanted to do all that by touring Southern Utah. Thirteen 911s and one Cayman departed Orange County on Friday morning, October 18th heading towards Las Vegas for lunch. After a fuel stop in town, everyone found their reserved parking spot waiting for them at Brio, a growing Italian restaurant chain that offers a Tuscanystyle menu. The food was wonderful and conversations began about the road ahead.
Back on the Interstate, thoughts turned toward the next leg of the trip, following Interstate 15 through the Virgin River gorge snaking thorough the canyon, our first “high level” experience. This highway winds its way with sweeping curves that many enjoyed in “spirited” fashion. The canyon walls climbed upwards for hundreds of feet. The fun was evident at the next rest stop when everyone exited their Porsches with grinning faces. “Wow, that was fantastic!” was the common theme. Stories ensued about the landscape, the road, the sweepers and what the next section would bring. We were now in Utah, the land of red rock, steep cliffs, canyons, green sage and azure blue skies. The weather was picture perfect for touring. The next leg took us along Utah state routes 18 and 56 passing through valleys, mountain passes, pastures, grazing cattle and the Old Spanish Trail. After a few miles, the traffic thinned, the highway proved awesome and the smile count was
still rising. Before we knew it, we had arrived at Cedar City and our hotel, and were on our way to dinner at Milt’s Steak & Seafood restaurant. Here the day’s stories were shared, the smile count continued to climb and top-notch food was enjoyed by all. The first ever “Porsche/ Utah Trivia Quiz” was reviewed with Tina Trewartha winning the prize, a pair of Porsche water bottles designed to fit your car’s cup holders. Way to go, Tina! Day 2 began with an early departure and cool temperatures. Everyone was eager to be underway so they could warm up both their engines and themselves. At sunrise, we were heading east on Utah route 14 into Cedar Canyon. The towering granite canyon walls greeted us with shadows, colors and snow. Before we knew it, we had arrived at the fabulous Cedar Breaks National Monument amphitheater. Our cars were now parked at 10,000 feet and had performed flawlessly. The “turbo” guys hadn’t even noticed (Continued on Page 20)

the altitude change. The sun had arrived on que at the “golden sun” hour providing for perfect photos. Shutter clicks were heard all over the monument before we were back heading east on Utah 143. Another scenic and lightly travelled highway; perfect for practicing one’s apexes. If you’re a Driver’s Education addict, you were in heaven here. A short time later, the tour landed on Utah’s famous Highway 12, an American scenic By-way. Past Bryce Canyon, the traffic lightened up, the weather and pavement were perfect and we had the highway to ourselves. Amazing! The road bisected canyons of sandstone, tunneled through red rock arches and split though mountain passes, before descending into pasture filled valleys populated by black angus. We had a short visit at Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument headquarters, then entered the red rock canyons that have made Utah famous. The Go Pros were mounted on Porsche paint and glass. Cameras ready, we headed into the Escalante river canyon where the
colors exploded before our eyes. WOW! Thoughts were now, “You mean there’s more?” Highway 12 continues to wind its way higher climbing out of the canyon and to Hell’s Backbone where the road literally bisected a narrow ridge with 1500 foot drop-offs on each side. The scenery was breathtaking providing multiple tour stops for a photo opps. Words were few as the variety of colors against clear blue sunny skies. Next, we headed to, some would say, the highlight of the tour, the Burr Trail. The road passes through farms and then into the Grand Staircase. Before long, our Porsches found themselves under a canopy of cottonwood trees showing off their golden yellow leaves flickering in the breeze. Those with “Cabs” had tops open. The road soon bisected a huge rock canyon with steep red walls on either side. We stopped for a short stroll into a slot canyon and were in awe of what the power of water can do. And those colors! Cameras and conversations continued. Lunch was at Hell’s Backbone Grill with

their fabulous “farm–to-table” offerings. Their Chocolate Chile Cream Pot dessert was to die for. Now that we were full, a “Fun” drive to our hotel was next. But not before passing up and over Boulder Mountain and open range for cattle grazing. Sure enough, as the tour rounded a corner, there stood an angus steer with his brood right along the road side. No worries though, as this was no problem for Porsche brakes. All we needed to know was, “would they cross the highway or not?” After a short stand off, the steer backed off the roadway and allowed us to pass. Whew! Later at dinner the days stories were shared, friendships were re-kindled and new ones developed while the smile count continued to rise.
Day three began a bit later since it was Sunday. Today would see a lightly travelled Interstate 70 wind its way though the Fish Lake Wilderness before entering Interstate 15 and one of Utah’s 80 MPH speed limit highways. Cruise controls and radar detectors were activated for this smooth Sunday morning drive to Zion National Park. After a fuel (and oil for some) stop in St. George, we headed back to Las Vegas for lunch at Bachi Burger - a burger joint with a bit of Asian fusion. The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dive’s host Guy Fieri called their sauces “out of bounds” in the burger world. That’s good if you’ve never seen his show. The guys and gals split up the table. Since it was Sunday and football was on the TV, the guys asked for an DECEMBER 2013
order of “Oxtail Chile Cheese Fries” as an appetizer for their side. It was devoured in under five minutes! I don’t recall many “to go boxes” being requested either. Finally, it was time to say so long for now. Some would head home but others would stay the night in Las Vegas. New friendships were created and others were renewed. Ask any of the participants, Greg & Annie Lush, C.L. Jarusek, Nancy Troast, Larry & Denise Kaprielian, Jim and Gail Reinholdt, Alan & Gail Hall, Sergio & Shirlene Rosman, Joel Sheiner, Pat Backus, Pat & Gabe Renga, Norm & Carolyn Follis, Tom & Pat Gray, Julian White, Mark & Tina Trewartha, or Lourinda Clark. They will all tell you they were glad they were on those roads in their Porsches instead of any other car. 21

Blue Seal of Excellence RECOGNIZED BUSINESS
2014-15 OCR Board Candidates Intro by Gary Labb Seven PCA-OCR members notified the Nomination Committee (Steve Eguina, Ken Fredrickson, and Gary Labb) that they wished to be PCA-OCR 2014-2015 Board Members. It was requested that each of them provide a short biography and a photograph so that you can learn a little bit about them. There are currently four positions available on the 2014-2015 Board: President, Vice President, Membership Director, and Treasurer. Per the bylaws, in December the PCA-OCR membership will vote and elect four members to the Board. Once the election is complete, the current PCAOCR Board determines what position the new board members (election winners) will hold on the Board. Full details of the time and method of balloting will be forthcoming from Secretary Monica Asbury via the RennList in December. Following are the 2014-2015 Candidates (in alphabetical order)
CHUCK BARTOLON My name is Chuck Bartolon; I am seeking a position on our clubs Board of Directors, many of you know me from the Autocross team where I have been volunteering for several years, first as Safety chair for 2 years then assisting Greg Lush and then Christine Newcomer as AX Co-Chair for an additional 2 years. I have been a Porsche enthusiast from my very early years, a Porsche owner for the last 8 years and a PCA member for the last 7 years. My time spent auto crossing, I have met many wonderful people in our club and have been given an appreciation for what it takes to keep a club like ours functioning and servicing its membership. I have spent the majority of my working life in Sales, Marketing, Procurement and Management, all of which have been service related, which I believe has given
me the understanding of how to bring people together and work within a collaborative environment to help create a common direction for our diverse membership. Fun with our Porsches! I look forward to continuing my club involvement and creating many new friendships along the way.
DON DILLON
Hello, My name is Don Dillon and for the last year I have been helping the Coopers with distributing our Club magazine to advertisers. I am interested in the Board “membership” position as I enjoy meeting new people and bringing them into our Club. I was President of Rockwell International Canada, an Orange County Grand Jury member and am currently serving on the Orange County Veterans Council. I would appreciate your support.
ROB GREENE PCA-OCR Club Experience: • Member since 2008 • Consistently active in many club events, including meetings (food!), rallies, tech sessions and driver’s training. • Very active in concours activities I’ve competed in five Concours de Elegance this season in Street/Unrestored 7 class with five First in Class awards from Beverly Hills to San Diego, plus a First in Division from our own Orange Coast Region Dana Point Concours. I love to share my preparation “secrets” with anyone who asks and probably

some who don’t ask! Assisted board members & technical committee chairs where possible, including membership, advertising, and tech session efforts such as the Mercedes Benz Restoration Center visit. • Represented OCR in the 50 Years of Porsche at the Festival of Speed with my 2003 Turbo. • Frequent Goody Store supporter--they have great stuff! • Professionally: Vice President and Senior Engineering Manager with Parsons Brinckerhoff • Professional Noise and Vibration Control Engineer and Certified Acoustical Consultant While the cars are awe inspiring, it really is “the people”. Both as a group and individually the OCR club members are amazing, down-to-earth and friendly. I would be proud to represent you as a member of the OCR Board and I ask for your support. Thank you. •
CHARLES L. JARUSEK (C.L.) First of all, please call me “C.L”, much less formal than the given name. I have belonged to PCA/OCR since 2006 and have served as Membership Chairman for the last three years. Prior to that, I filled in as Charity Director while Jerry Muno was going through Chemo Therapy. I was given the award of Porsche Enthusiast of the Year in 2010. After serving in the USAF as a Procurement Specialist for four years, I became a Purchasing Manager prior to wanting to help others even more. I became a Reserve Police Officer and then a full time Police Officer for 25 years with Santa Ana PD. I retired in 2001 and still wanting to enjoy life, I decided to buy a used 2002 Turbo in 2006. I actually joined the Club prior to taking delivery of my Porsche and have enjoyed the Club and the fine members ever since. My (Continued from Page 31)

Editor’s Notes:
(Continued from Page 5)
there are also some other model additions to Porsche we can expect. The most obvious is the two-door version of the Panamera. I am informed that this will be a platform “similar” to the Audi 5 series, but again completely “Porsche”. It will be a two door coupe of striking appearance and will eventually fill out to all models available on the current Panamera, which is a lot; basic six cylinder, six cylinder turbocharged (replacing the V8), Turbo and hybrid versions included. That this is now a “real” potential is seemingly widely acknowledged and some pundits even see it before 2015, in other words next year. There is also a very tantalizing story floating around about a type 960. This is rumored to be either a Ferrari fighter or a counterpoint to the Audi R8. It is aimed to come down from the stratospheric price levels of the 918 to a more “reasonable” plus or minus $200K. The rumored engine is a flat eight. Oh my! This one is going to be sizzling and within the range of people of normal wealthy status, just mere millionaires as opposed to the billionaire requirements of the 918. So far I am not aware of any actual spy photos. Only “artists conceptions” that are floating arouond the Internet. My favorite potential Porsche is also rumored to be back on the development track. That is the “small” or entry level Boxster. A four cylinder, flat of vee, or inline? And a somewhat smaller wheelbase than the current Boxster. I personally like this one as I see it being the upper scale entry level sports car, compared to the Miata… I would be optimistic that this will bring new kids to our playground. Particularly those that have performance
orientation… as opposed to “ostentation”? In any case, I welcome these new models and Porsche expects to be selling many more cars in the next five years. With any luck this means new club members. Our challenge; how to reach out to the “Macan” owners? Feeling Racy There is no doubt that People who buy Porsche buy into the performance ethos of the brand. To keep this alive, no doubt Porsche is going Prototype racing again at the highest level. We expect to see the new LeMans Porsche entered in 2014 events. The Internet is already full of photos of the gaudily painted prototypes of the prototype. It will have a “hybrid” power component, as I understand it, and will be cutting edge. Good for Porsche and good for us owners too under the theory that “racing improves the breed”. This car, or versions of it, will race in the USA so look for it to come to a neighborhood near you in 2014. In fact and for some years, one can buy a street going version of a true Porsche racecar, the GT3. The most “pure” GT3 would be the 996 version of the mid 2000s. Like my friend Brian Quadt has. This one has NO electronic nannies to catch your normal silly errors. Of the GT3 line there are two generations from the 997 series of chassis, and the latest is of course a derivative on the 991 series, which is for the first time not available with manual transmission. Porsche needs to produce these to homologate their racing versions so they will be with us for the time being, thankfully.
DECEMBER 2013
California Here I come! “Right back where I started from,” goes the song. And Porsche has broken ground on their new delivery and performance center in Carson, California. As a golfer it was hard to see the Par 3 “Executive Course” go under, but the giant figure so familiar for decades standing by the 405 holding a golf club has been transformed into a Porsche Technician heralding the repurposed facility. Here will be a small performance track, which is supposed to be made available to “local clubs”. Oh, that means us as the Orange Coast Region I should think? I believe that the intended completion date is sometime in 2015. One can opt for delivery of their new Porsche here and get in some car driving and counseling expertise. It will be very good to have them in our backyard, so to speak, and I think that it enhances the mystique of Porsche in expanding a footprint to Southern California. Rally I do I actually prefer “Rallye”, the European version of the word as it sounds more sophisticated and I think that it may help make one feel, well, kind of cool. In 2014 there is some planning going on for a joint Audi/Porsche Rallye. Phil Cowan of the Audi Club and our very own Larry Moore are the magicians in charge of the magic here. Inaugural Audi-Porsche Riverside 100 Rally, Saturday, March 8, 2014, see the ad on page So dear readers stay warm, have a great holiday season and we hope to see you all out there in 2014.

Board Candidates: (Continued from Page 23) platform is not to “put a chicken in everyone’s pot”, but more in line with seeing that others enjoy themselves as much as I do.
GREG LUSH In 2007 I purchased my first Porsche, a Lapis Blue 997 Cab S, with the intent of joining the Porsche Club and participating in AutoX. Within six months at AutoX, I was drafted to help with Equipment (loading and unloading the truck at events) because the current volunteer had needed to vacate the position about 10 months ahead of time. Shortly thereafter Jim Harris began grooming me for AutoX co-chair, which consumed the next couple of years. Since the move from AutoX co-chair to AutoX Emeritus, I have been actively involved, along with the other Emeriti and current AutoX team members, in attending meetings and helping out on event days.
Just over two years ago Gordon approached me regarding interest in joining the board as Vice President. January 2012 I was elected by the club and appointed by the board to take the role of VP. Currently I hold the position of President Pro-tem after Gordon’s departure in August and am interested in the position of President for the 2014-2015 term. This is a great club and my skills and enthusiasm are well positioned for this role, your consideration is sincerely appreciated.
DAVID PIPER I have owned and enjoyed several Porsches throughout the years and have been a member of PCA-OCR since 2007. I have been on the OCR Board of Directors and served as Treasurer for the last four years. I am a Certified Public Accountant and have been in business for forty-seven years.
After serving in the U. S. Navy, I attended and graduated from USC and began my career with Price Waterhouse and Company. I then served as a controller in several companies in private industry for over seven years before starting my own firm.
SANDY SCHWARTZ Hello, My name is Sandy Schwartz and I am running for a position on the board. I have been a member for a little over 6 years. I have met a lot of great people at the various functions of the club. I have done some volunteering for the New Member Picnic as well as the White Gloves Concours. If elected to the board I will serve to the best of my ability to whatever position the board sees fit. In closing, I would just add that Porsches got us together but the relationships we make keep us together. I respectfully ask for your vote. Thank you.

Rice’s Ramblings:
(Continued from Page 15)
kind of Porsche guy. He experienced irregular running with intermittent tachometer wiggling and then engine running rough until it stopped running altogether. After it cooled down , everything worked perfectly. Of course it kept getting worse, so something needed to be done? First thing is to look for the obvious; Loose wires. wiggle the wires to the transformer, CDI box, harness disconnect at the 14 pin connection, body to engine (T-14), etc. Look for loose contacts and look at pin connectors for dark arching, dirt or corrosion, which looks like rough gray metal. None here. PS I use a touch of WD40 spray
on the T-14 pin contacts and CDI plug contacts to displaces moisture, give better contact, and make full pin engagement easier. Next spot to check is the unreliable CDI’s Transformer or “COIL.” Ever since Bosch Coils have been coming from Brazil they have had a much higher failure rate. Look for a waxy appearing substance coming from the coil‘s tan cap. This is insulating oil from inside the coil. The engine heat coming from the cylinders after the engine is shut down is very high and contributes to coil failure! Mike’s coil was made in W. Germany and was in good condition. I have been using, with advice from a major remanufacture of Bosch components, a standard 12volt point coil. Specifically the Blue Sport coil with excellent results – even with a near 500 hp 3.6 turbo using a retro fit early CDI ignition system with a 1986 turbo stock ignition distributor. Next check is alternator voltage output. Some early internal regulators are simply not up to Porsche standards which leads to expensive repairs.
DECEMBER 2013
If you notice your tachometer needle wiggling and not responding to engine rpm and your lights seems brighter than normal, turn your headlights on bright, then turn on your A/C and anything that draws electrical power then see if the tach. returns to normal movement? If so, suspect a failure of voltage regulator. This can result in very expensive repairs, if not a fire! Mike checked out his voltage supply and after some careful inspecting (we both) determined that was not the problem. But what was it? After a shop visit we looked everything over and found: NOTHING! Most frustrating. My thinking was, and is, a CDI about to fail. I recommended carrying a spare CDI and coil. That may seem like an odd thing but these cars are old. Things fail. It just makes good sense to have a spare. Buying a good one now is much cheaper than being at the mercy of a roadside shop. I carry one of each item plus my tool box and other spares but that is insecure me… Next time more CIS reporting and repairs, rebuilding, and modifying on my home made CIS test unit!
