As OCR Club Secretary, it’s my responsibility to make sure we cross our t’s and dot our i’s when it comes to the insurance paperwork for leaders of tours/rallyes, and any Porsche event that involves driving, towing or even catching a ‘lift’. The leader, or initiator of the event, must have a Certificate of Insurance, “COI,” in place with PCA National, and black/white/ red colored waivers signed by all participants. How do you obtain your COI for your event? EASY! National requests paperwork be submitted two weeks prior to the event. When you have your event finalized, please reach out to me, sheamonica@gmail.com and let me know your intent. You must provide the following information about your event: • Complete name and address of starting and stopping point(s) • Any stops along your route must be noted with the address and if the date is different than the starting date, the date must also be included • The length of your event, i.e., 4 hours, 1 day, 2 days, etc. • The number of expected attendees It’s actually quite a simple process; you just have to follow the instructions on the form and submit the information in a timely fashion (two weeks prior to your event).

LETTERFrom the Editor Story and photo by Marcia Salans So, going forward – you’ll see an increased focus on encouraging members to submit stories and activity pictures. Write and submit YOUR story - whether it’s a new car purchase, car/ garage renovation, car trip/drive, autocross, garage talk, accessory, new book and certainly what our club is known for – charitable outreach – your Pando wants to focus on capturing “the new, the traditional and the awesome”. Marcia Salans in her 2000 996 Cabriolet
Hello Fellow PCA-OCR Members!
I’m excited to be the new Pando Editor and join such an accomplished Team! I’ve been a PCA-OCR member for several years and have a 2000 996 Cabriolet in the garage. I’m an enthusiastic supporter or our Annual Toys for Tots, the Hines Family Plastic Recycling Project and have participated in an infamous Larry Moore Gimmick Rally. As a native southern Californian growing up in our every changing carcentric culture, I’ll do the best I can to serve our membership and I really look forward to working with everyone on the Team. Garey Cooper, now “Editor Emeritus”, certainly leaves a big footprint to fill, and has promised me he’s just an email away to bounce ideas off of. Garey and I have very similar thoughts on the Pando Team mission to consistently produce a monthly magazine showcasing the various heartbeats of our widely diversified PCA-OCR members’ passions.
We plan to enhance our focus on Autocross, helmed by co-chairs Eric Budai and Bruce Powers. If you are new to Auto-X or want to learn more, Keith Gregorio (keith_gregorio@yahoo. com) is your guy! Sandy Schwartz, Membership Chairman, will help us encourage new members to share their stories. We want to begin highlighting social gatherings, smaller groups such as the Wolfpack, and smaller scale (but no less important) events. This is just a taste of what we hope to offer you in the coming months. Additionally, if you have an idea you would like to spearhead for Pando, we would like to hear! We are always on the look out for new and interesting things to put in Pando. We want to make a greater effort to highlight the events of the club. Beginning this month, we are starting an ongoing piece called, “AppChat”. AppChat will feature selected questions and answers taken from the PCA-OCR Mobile App (thanks, Gary, for setting up the app!). The members featured in each month have given their permission to have their responses printed in Pando.
So, if you see a popular thread on the PCA-OCR App that you think should appear in Pando, or have a thread that you have created yourself and want featured, please let us know! Next month we will begin a new series called, “What’s in your garage?” Do you want to show off your Porsches? Do you have a recent purchase? Do you have recent restoration? We want to help you share your car(s)! Please submit your photo and accompanying text (think of it as a short paragraph or less) to Kristen kmjaoui@gmail.com. Of course, we aren’t all about the new and exciting- the old is just as good! Our Pando Team, including Bob Weber for Classifieds, Lee Rice for Rice’s Ramblings, Sandy Schwartz for Membership Updates, Nicole and Cooper Boggs for advertisements and Gerry Crews for New Member Photos will continue to work hard to bring you the best we can offer. Additionally, the Pando submission schedule will stay the same. Please get us your article package (containing your article in a Word document, 3-5 full resolution photos and captions for your photos) by the 1st of every month. Please submit your article package to both myself (msalans@socal.rr.com) and Kristen (kmjaoui@gmail.com). Route 66 Barn Find Road Trip
Lost collector cars along the Mother Road
by Tom Cotter; photography by Michael Alan Ross, published October 15, 2016 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN. It is easy to think of Route 66 as a California highway because of the great open stretches that still exist in Southern California. But it really was a national highway, running 2,278 miles from Chicago, Il to Malibu, CA. This book is a travel diary, appropriately dealing with the food along the way, as well as the road itself, and of course ‘barn find’ cars. Lead car and conversation starter for the trip was a ‘39 woody wagon. Be advised that the title - Route 66 Barn Find - is somewhat misleading in that most of the old cars described were found in driveways, car ports, back yards, open fields, or otherwise exposed. Some were found as projects-in-work, but few, if any, were the hidden away, long abandoned vehicle which comes to mind as a ‘ barn find’. Indeed, many of the ‘barns’ in which the described ‘finds’ were located were actually Salvage Yards. There is no Porsche content in Route 66, but the trip does begin from the home of a Porsche ( ‘63 Coupe ) owner in Highland Park, Illinois, and the book does adhere to the PCA Mantra – ‘It’s not the cars, it’s the people’ that makes this book such a great read - almost half of the text is about the owners of the cars spotted from the Route 66 pavement.
Route 66 Barn Find is divided into eight sections, one for each of the states through which Route 66 passed, though only 13 miles were in Kansas. Fast-paced and engrossing, the sections have a separate named ‘chapter’s’ for each ‘collection’, collections as distinct from museums or even displays. For example, in Moriarty, NM, the author found some 700 cars out in a field – some with trees growing through them – none for sale! The chapter headings and various parts of the book have interesting Route 66 oriented artwork like the graphics of the book’s cover. Within each collection/ chapter one or more cars and their restoration needs are described in detail. Some ‘finds’ were vehicles that had been extensively hot-rodded but not driven in past decades.
a few do sort of run businesses in old parts, but they do so without showrooms, advertising or websites. It seems that their marketing techniques are as old as their cars! Route 66 Barn Find is hardbound, with 192 heavyweight glossy 9-1/4 x 10-3/4 pages, the text and 402 color photos are sharp and clear. There is a comprehensive, two-page, three-column index, and a one page listing of the ‘best of’: food, places, people, and cars encountered on the trip. By the time you read this it should be available for $35.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from https://www. quartoknows.com
The emphasis of this book is clearly on Detroit iron, no doubt reflecting of the focus of the collectors rather than that of the author, but Datsuns, MGs and SAABs are reported on as well. A December to Remember! Story by Bruce Powers, Photos by Paul Novotne
A salute to Chris Barrington, Outgoing AX Co-Chair 2015-2016
A December to Remember OCR Autocross - things got serious and not so serious. One thing for certain, there was some dirty dancing – dancing cars on the course and dancing at the day’s end awards! On Sunday, December 11, 2016, the eleventh event of the 2016 Walter’s Porsche Autocross Series took place on the runways of El Toro. This year’s Autocross Series has been a hot competition and a great way for our Orange Coast Region Membership to enjoy their Porsches. The series is made possible with the generous support of Walter’s Porsche of Riverside and we would also like to thank our Series Support Sponsors, GMG located in Santa Ana, and MOMO of Italy for the 2016 Autocross Series. This year, the Auto-X Series BRI has been closely contested down to the eleventh hour – it’s crunch time! What is BRI you ask? It stands for “Bench Racing Index”, and theoretically takes the car out of the equation and adjusts
12 PANDO | February 2017
elapsed time based on car handicap making it more about driver ability. Two drivers, Erik Hagendijk and Carl Vanderschuit, battled back and forth all year and were tied coming into the last event, each having won top BRI in five events. Some competitors with rear engine “real” Porsches like to call it the Boxster Rigged Index, as the top BRI driver has been driving a Boxster the past few years. The folks in the rear engine, “real” Porsche camp will argue that the BRI takes the driver out of the equation. As you can imagine, there is a lot of friendly ribbing between the two factions. For our final event, the BRI competition did not disappoint. Erik H. was doing some dirty dancing on his third of four timed runs, hitting a cone or two. He resumed his cool as a cucumber composure to come back in his fourth and final lap to finish with his best time of the day, a 77.241 which also was the third fastest time of the day. This sealed his BRI win for the event by a scant 0.293 second over Carl (adjusted
BRI time) and with it the Top Gun BRI Award for the 2016 Autocross season. Carl’s time of 78.195 was the 4th fastest time of the day. Congrats to Erik and Carl on a hard fought and fun to watch season! Kurt “Wild Man” Ressler, driving Jim Salzer’s white GT3 once again claimed Fastest Time of the Day for a Porsche 76.112. Kurt wiggled his way through the three slaloms to beat Greg “El Presidente” Lush (77.114) by 1.002 seconds! A sincere thanks to Kurt Ressler for all his energy and time as the Autocross Equipment Manager the past two years – Job Well Done! Meanwhile, I was tied in the season point’s standings in my class with Lee Smith. My plan was to stuff him with a large burger and fries lunch so he was too full to drive, which Autowerkes hosted to all participants as the December’s Event Sponsor. Lee Smith did some dirty dancing with the cones on one lap but once again rose to the competition. With a time of 82.2, my plan failed as
he finished 7th in the BRI and stole the 2016 Series SS03 class championship from me by 5 points! Congrats to Lee on his season Championship! In closing out a year of Autocross fun, competition, learning and camaraderie, I know I speak for all participants and the steering committee in thanking our outgoing Co-Chair, Chris Barrington for his leadership, cool head, time and energy spent for making the past two seasons smooth, organized and fun for all. The event is all volunteer run, just like all PCA-OCR events. It’s the people that make it fun, and they happen to be driving Porsches! A Big Thank You to all the people pitching in to lend a hand. Part of the fun is the camaraderie that comes from not just the completion but all the people helping out with setting up in the morning and loading the truck and staying for the awards in the evening. There are many areas where participants can help. Next Autocross – get more involved, ask Eric Budai or myself what you can do to help.
Erik Hagendijk, 2014 Boxster S
Again, thank you our 2016 Autocross Championship Series Sponsor Walter’s Porsche and our Support Sponsors GMG and MOMO. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Car Control Clinic and Autocross on February 18-19, 2017! Carl Vanderschuit, Aug AX, San Pedro, 2006 Boxster

Porsche Experience Garage
First impressions
Walking in…wow, lots of people and several groups here. Looks like a great destination spot for a PCA-OCR club drive! Visitors can walk around several display cars, including a new 911R, a 918, and a Boxster Spyder. The 911R and 918 are allocated to customers and only temporarily there. The Garage is on the right and although it looks like a museum with several Porsche race cars on display, you can see mechanics in the background working on a car in the middle of the space. The Garage is clean and a beautiful shop – absolutely spotless. It’s a great example of German efficiency and organization.
Check in at the front desk
The Agents are extremely polite, helpful and efficient. Arriving at 9:30 am, I had a chance to walk around and investigate the space and then met my instructor,

The Track
Michael - Great guy - with 10 years of autocross experience as well as 8 weeks of Porsche training before becoming an instructor here. I followed Michael out to the cars. Interestingly, we didn’t wear helmets for any of the driving.
The Driving Experience
I selected two driving sessions for the day. The first called “Mastering the Manual”, included driving a 911S and a GT4. Being a manual driver, I thought this would be interesting. It turned out other than getting to drive these cars, there wasn’t much focus on how to drive with the manual. Maybe if I was a “manual newbie” it would be different, but we generally keep the cars in second and third gear so there wasn’t much of an opportunity to even shift. The gearing in the GT4 was pretty high and you could get going as fast you wanted to in second before you ran out of RPMs. This session lasted almost 2 hours. The next session was the “911 Turbo vs the GT3”. Both of these cars were PDK. Now, being a true-blue “manual” guy I wouldn’t think of owning a car with PDK. However, after driving hard on 18 PANDO | February 2017
GT4 Ready to roll
the track in both configurations, I would much rather be driving a PDK on the track! Why? Because I was able to put total focus on my speed and hitting my line was so much easier using the PDK when I wasn’t having to think about what gear I should be in. I can really see that in racing this is an amazing tool.
The PDK in the GT3
is impossibly fast and always put the car in the right gear and even the turbo did a great job with it. Coming hard into a turn and hitting the brakes, the downshifts just happen right on cue.
Kickplate
First thing we did was the kick plate/low friction run. The idea is you drive into the entrance at a relatively slow speed around 22mph‌as you enter the gate, a plate kicks up one side or another (you never know which) and you lose total traction at the rear end and you try and recover. But the driving surface is super slick and wet, so you have zero traction and you instantly go into a spin. The key is really fast steering reactions. I spun out a lot. For safety, they have installed a

high grip surface around the edge of the slippery area, so once you are in spin, you stand on the brakes until the car crosses over the edge and it just stops. So it’s pretty much impossible to get in trouble here.
Ice Mountain
On this, we came down a slick and wet simulated mountain road with a tight right turn at the bottom. The idea is to get down the hill without spinning out. Believe me - harder than it looks! Of all the cars, the Turbo (with all wheel steering) and with PSM turned off, was the easiest to get around the turn without spinning. PSM fights you sometimes and actually made it more difficult. I could see the same effect on the skid pad.
Skid pad
The skid pad is a circle of low friction concrete wetted by a constant water spray. Because of the low friction surface it’s really hard to get around the circle. It’s very much like driving on black ice. This was much more difficult than the wet circles we have driven at DE’s. This too was easier with PSM off.
Low Friction Handling
The low friction handling course is made of the same material as ice mountain and the skid pad but it’s dry. Again the goal is to get through the course without spinning out. It was very interesting exploring the limits of each car. Again, the Turbo did well here partly because of its rear wheel steering.
High Speed Straight
This section is designed to show off launch control. Good place to do a zero to 100 mph blast, with high-banked turn 20 PANDO | February 2017
at the end ala Nürburgring. The Turbo with launch control was very exciting!
Road Handling Course
Starting the session, the instructor takes you for a lap to “show you the course”. Hang on to your seat…it’s an E ticket ride! Totally amazing what these cars can do in experienced hands. Then it’s your turn. This was the most fun and the place I spent the most time. It starts with a fast straight where you accelerate to 100mph+ (I didn’t dare look because I could have missed my brake point for the next turn…which I did once.), then you drop down into some twisting turns to come out to another short straight. Then through some S’s and up a blind hill with some sharp downhill curves to follow, finishing with another short straight. Generally, the track segments were pretty short. The driving process was you coming out of a turn, start to squeeze on the gas, point the car to your turning point and floor it, hit the brakes hard at the braking marker, make your turn and do it again to the next corner. The main straight was the longest and you could easily get to over 100 mph before you hit the brake marker and start into the first S. Your instructor is giving you pointers on the car and where to line up for each turn, all the while encouraging you to push the car hard. It doesn’t get any better than this! After a few laps and your confidence builds you get faster and faster, but the key is keeping your focus. In the back of your mind is the fear of hitting the wall. Those of us who don’t normally race their cars will quickly hit the limit of their abilities. The instructors are really good at watching your progress and keeping you out of serious trouble.
The Cars
They have almost every Porsche you can imagine available to drive on the track, with something like 80 cars in the working inventory. My day started with the 911S with the new turbo engine and a manual transmission, followed by the GT4 manual and the GT3 and Turbo PDK.
Car Impressions
The Turbo was the overall winner in my eyes. Incredible power, smooth handling, all around the car I would like to drive the most. GT4 was amazing. Tight, quick, instant throttle response. Loud in a wonderful way… might be hard to live with day-to-day. Very confidence inspiring. Easier to race and felt faster than the 911. GT3 was similar to the GT4 in its spirit. A little more planted with the rear engine grunt you expect from a 911. But a bit too rough for me. I liked this car the least. The 911S impressed me the most with its incredibly smooth engine. I drove the road circuit mostly in second and third gear and kept the engine in the upper revs the whole time. Torque was so flat, no peaking at all. An amazing engine! At the end of the day, I was tired! Driving over 20 laps on the handling track required 100% concentration (at least for me!) and the low friction course is a lot of work as you hustle to apply enough steering angle quickly. I broke out into a sweat after a few laps of that. Interested in taking a trip to the Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles? Visit https://goo.gl/Z1lXSf

The Ultimate Dining Experience
Story and Photos by Colin Camisasca With the holiday festivities behind us, we found ourselves free one Saturday in January and decided upon a spontaneous visit to the LA Porsche Experience Center’s Restaurant 917. Of course after months of eating, what better way to ring in the New Year but with more, you guessed it, eating. This would be the first time my girlfriend, Jenelle, and I had been to the facility, so with much excitement, we made a reservation on Open Table and jumped in the car to drive down the 405. A short while later, we were navigating through the commercial city of Carson and arrived at the impeccably maintained Porsche Experience Center grounds. We made the short walk to the front entrance and were immediately greeted by an enthusiastic and happy attendant. 24 PANDO | February 2017
Slightly fearful we would be turned away, we claimed our 7pm reservation at Restaurant 917 and were gleefully welcomed. Caught off guard and thus half distracted by the sights in the lower museum, we signed in and were given visitor lanyards. Our attendant ushered us through the various classrooms and led us to the east elevator, where we rode up to the second story. He spoke highly of the restaurant and assured us we would not be disappointed. The elevator doors opened and he left us at the main reception. We confirmed our reservation and were brought to the south ballroom, south ballroom which has a wall of windows that open to the track. Although it was dark, we could still make out the twists and turns designed to emulate

the racetracks of the world and show a Porsche’s true capabilities. We were given a choice of two tables, and though it was not crowded --more likely, an undiscovered treasure-- we chose to join the several other parties near the window. We sat comfortably and were handed what looked like giant owner’s manuals; beautifully leather bound and stitched with the 917 name and embossed Porsche Crest. A friendly waitress soon introduced herself and asked if we wanted a cocktail while she went to get our ice water. I couldn’t help but order the Targa, a Maker’s Mark based spritzer, and my better half went with a Pinot Noir. While the view of the course was priceless, the décor inside was equally great. On the non-windowed wall hung
huge murals of a Gulf 917k and, rather ironically, the Pig Car, which seemed a fitting suggestion for me to order the pork as my main course. There’s a private room for rent on the west side and a full service bar right as you enter the room. Soon, a waiter came out to deliver bread and placed a dish of butter between us. This was not any regular butter; the butter was molded after 911s! As we munched on our bread and butter, we ordered a charcuterie fromage plate. It was hard to decide on what cheeses we wanted because there were so many to choose from. Our cocktails arrived soon after and we toasted to our adventurous evening. My Targa cocktail was really quite nice and, I thought its namesake suited its performance. The charcuterie board immediately followed, adorn with fruit, fig bars, focaccia and what looked like tomatillos, but was confirmed to be the rather tart gooseberry. We enjoyed our appetizer and began speaking of the history of Porsche Motorsports in Southern California - Its early affiliations, my limited but very special personal time spent with the Andial heroes, and the headquarters’ old location off Shannon Street in Santa Ana. To our great amusement, we watched a security guard take to the track to do his rounds. Not only did he do so cautiously with flashers blaring, we couldn’t help but snicker at the fact a Prius appeared to be running hot laps! Then it was time for the main course. Jen received her beef and dumplings, which I eyed jealously. My entree envy was somewhat lessened by the sight of my delicious pork shank. Adding a glass of Malbec to the mix, we transitioned to our meal. The meat was fall-offthe-bone tender and neatly paired with root vegetables and creamy polenta in a beautiful European-esque sauce. That’s not to say I didn’t steal a bite (or two) from Jen’s plate. Meanwhile, the soft discussion of automotive culture disseminated throughout the air as we

and our fellow guests continued to enjoy the evening’s subtle theme. After we finished our dinners, the waiter brought us another fit-for-theshowroom menu, this one containing the dessert menu. We were told all of the gelato and sorbet was made entirely in house, and the various other dishes. We decided to split the flourless chocolate cake al a mode, and continued to enjoy our surroundings. Once devoured, we thanked the wonderful staff and assured them we would certainly be back again. We wandered back downstairs taking time to study the several labeled classrooms and Porsche Individualist room as we strolled to the front. Not wishing to leave without a peek at the priceless pieces of Porsche history, we wandered the museum gawking at the 550 Spyder, 917K and 919 Hybrid. Jen has a soft spot for the 930 Turbo and I explained the subtle differences making 26 PANDO | February 2017
this Turbo Carrera homologation car all the more special. We could see the early side script 911 as we peered through the glass into the adjacent workshop. A yellow GT1 and Dakar prepared 959 was housed there, with a note “Do Not Wash” as the dirt on the car remained from the original event all those years ago. Clearly this was the most visually unkempt item that would ever dare enter the sparkling and incredible facility. One last look at the 918 Spyder and Jen’s note on its strange similarities to the other 959 prototype, we again were greeted by our favorite docent. We inquired into the driving schools and he instantly lit up with which programs he preferred, and his unanticipated awe of the new 718 platform. Apparently, the staff is treated to a track day of their own every 6 months. We talked for some time about the various experiences and he hinted that the events might run longer as the summer months offer
more daylight. He then commented that Sundays may soon become an active day for the facility since many of us who own Porsches are more often than not working Monday through Friday. Unfortunately, our time with the docent was cut short as another group soon arrived, we thanked him for his hospitality and assured him we would soon return. All in all, we had an absolute blast that was made all the more enjoyable by the staff, menu and inimitable surroundings that only Porsche and their ever-enticing mystique could provide. We thoroughly thank the facility personnel and Porsche NA for the chance to dine in such surroundings and certainly encourage any other club member to take part in the experience. You, nor your stomach, will not be disappointed.

RICE’S
Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice
Technology News
Coming soon to a convenience store near you will be your very own oil change kit. A kit is now being developed consisting of a “Unit” –a small suitcase sized box containing your new oil, a new oil filter, and all the correct oil additives specifically for your car’s engine. The “NEXCEL UNIT”® is an oil tank, oil filter, oil additives and the specified oil quantity all within a contained unit, all sealed and inside a self-contained, clean, mess-free container. The Nexcel Unit is connected to the car and engine by two quick dry-break couplings, and securing latches. BP-Castrol is showing the “Nexcel Unit” idea to auto manufactures with the added point that each manufacturer and their engines can have their specific tailored oils and additives sealed in their Nexcel Unit. This also reduces crude oil loss in manufactured engine oil in the market of today. Currently, it takes 42 Liters of crude oil to produce one-half liter of new lubricant oil for your engine! Castrol states they can recycle the old Nexcel Unit oil to produce 34 Liters of fresh engine lubricant from 42 Liters of oil recycled in the Nexcel Unit. So you may see your next oil change kit in Stater Brothers, Amazon, or even while you are shopping at Macy’s. Who knows? Additionally, I worry about the government mandating what is in engine oils sold in the future. The government’s policies do not leave room for an appreciation of old cars and old 28 PANDO | February 2017

technology. Old car owners who intend to keep driving their old car, classic cars, vintage cars or whatever you like to call them, you need to be aware of what additives your engine needs, and what you are getting in your oil. I suggest Porsche owners pay attention to what the do-gooders think is good for our environment and not how long your engine lasts. And another new technology is coming along these days. This is a different crankshaft, connecting rod system and piston designed to change the crankshaft’s stroke and thereby change compressions ratios for economy, torque, or power, and do this while the engine is running. Is this what the world needs today? Does the world really need
a more complicated mechanical engine? Why add more moving parts, more mass flopping around inside an engine while adding weight, complication and costs? I personally do not dislike new technology, as some have suggested. Piston pounding engine seem like relics of 200+ years ago, but I do have affection for them and how well they can work and sound. Heck, I grew up around steam trains, cars, and airplanes. I trained in large radial air-cooled reciprocating aircraft engines in Naval Aviation and flying aircrew. However, I wasn’t entirely in love with those big radial engines, as they needed intensive maintenance and their failures took a lot of time and resources to get
Fig 2 Porsche 919 engine-electro LeMans winner 2016
back into “UP” status. The aircraft also had two Westinghouse J-34 turbojet engines. Each of the jets engine made nearly as much power as our large radialengines did. The thing of it was the jets were so trouble free, so maintenance free, and so small and aerodynamically cleaner on the airframe. And they made amazing power -so easily. My heart was soon into jets and gas turbines and still is. That is why I love turbochargers, which is as close to a jet as you can get in a car. Now battery/motor cars are a reality and I love to see this coming. More than one of our hot rod guys would start brainstorming and we asked ourselves: What did it take to make our cars go? Then we started to think and discuss: What were all the parts in our engines to make them run? That was mind-boggling then, today I don’t even want to think about it. Then we were asked to look at a rear wheel on a car and we asked, “What is the minimum it takes to just turn those wheels?” Gas, oil, water, iron in the engine, pistons, crankshaft, piston rings, connecting rods, valves, heads, intakes, and carburetors, and exhaust pipes, clutch, transmission and hundreds of other parts. Then someone said, “HOW about an electric motor driving the rear wheels?” Ok, that minimizes the amount of parts we would use: motor, power cables, battery, and a switch! Then you have instant 100% power at 1 RPM and
onwards. NO warm ups, No oil changes, NO gas, really nothing except charging the battery. Over time they do wear out, but they sure work well. Professor Ferdinand Porsche had the very same thought and built a “mixed drive” car with an engine to run a generator, which powered the wheel motors. That way the engine only needed to run at one rpm, the most efficient rpm for power, fuel conservation, and efficiency. Fast forward to today, Porsche is doing this again. While Porsche’s win at the 2016 LeMans was thrilling, the technology in the 919 race car shouldn’t be overlooked. The 919 finished 24 hours of grueling racing and proved a point with a small V-4 piston engine powering the motorbattery system. In the future, I expect battery 911s will be able to go 0-60 in 2 seconds flat. Because somebody out there really needs that! Right? But maybe it is just to show it can be done? While the battery 911 excites me, I would like to see a very small gas turbine engine built to run the generator.
Rice’s Ramblings: Ask a Mechanic We welcome questions, inquiries, comments and ideas to help you enjoy your Porsche to the fullest... What is on your mind? If you have a question about your Porsche, please send in your question to Lee at riceturbos@ sbcglobal.net or 714-539-1042 (reasonable hours, please).
I like gas turbines for their simplicity. A gas turbine rotates in one direction only, so everything turns in one direction. In a gas turbine engine, the compressor and turbine rotate on one shaft and at one speed, making the most efficient power to charge the battery(s). The gas turbine uses almost no oil, and can burn almost anything burnable for fuel with little to no emissions. February 2017 | PANDO 29
