LETTERFrom the Editor Jim Marshall’s article on avoiding an accident really struck home with me as I was recently in my daily driver, missed an entrance and drove into a curb while doing a Char O Chicken dinner run. A very stupid costly mistake on my part…but at least it wasn’t my Porsche. As always, your February Pando has a terrific book review by Bruce Herrington and a thoughtful nuts and bolts perspective provided by Lee Rice. By the way, calendar-wise, the first 2018 Driver Education Event “DE” will be on February 23, 2018 from 6:30am-5:00pm at Willow Springs International Raceway, 3500 7th Street West, Rosamond CA 93560. Story and Photo by Marcia Salans Happy February 2018 PCA-OCR Members - here’s

hoping you’re taking advantage and enjoying our sunny Southern California weather enabling us to drive our cars in comparison to our nationwide Porsche neighbors in snowbound areas! As always, your Pando Team has sourced a wide variety of interesting articles starting with the January 7, 2018 Annual Member Meeting and Brunch at the beautiful Tustin Ranch Golf Club. Next up is Rich Blanco’s aspirational story of always wanting a Porsche. Rich not only achieved his dream, but his car wound up being on the Del Mar Car Poster and the mugs being sold at the event. Talk about making up for lost time!

work at least one shift. They’ll need your t-shirt size. Also, when you volunteer you are earning money for your Region! A portion of the CFoS profits are allocated to each Region based upon the number of shifts worked by volunteers. So, your contribution also benefits our Region! The goal is to have at least 400 volunteers. All volunteers in Grid must wear long pants. Please include your name, cell phone number, email address, shirt size and PCAOCR Zone 8 with all correspondence. Remember, PCA is fueled by volunteers! For the CFoS you don’t have to be a PCA member, just be over 18 years old. For additional information, please contact: Janice Witteried - CFoS Volunteer Coordinator 760-373-1413 volunteer@calfestival.org In closing, the Porsche Community recently lost Walter Kienle of Porsche Riverside who was a consistently strong, dedicated sponsor of PCA-OCR and AX. Walter will be missed by our entire Club and many members were fortunate enough to have had a wonderful long lasting relationship with him resulting in many amazing memories.

Also, looking ahead at the April 2018 Calendar the exciting California Festival of Speed “CFoS” is April 20-22nd with set up on April 19th. Last year was a complete success made possible by having enough volunteers to fill all the assignments with two volunteers in each shift on both Friday and Saturday! They need YOU to make Additionally, Jeff Trask, former President of the 2018 CFoS a success! Morning and the 356 Club of Southern California passed afternoon shifts are available and you can away. Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

DRIVEN: The Racing Photography of Jesse Alexander 1954-1962,

published 2000 by Chronicle Books, San Francisco, CA

I’ve heard that as people mature, they revert back through their developmental stages to ultimately, virtual infancy. In my case, I guess I must have regressed to being a preschooler, because I’ve (once again) come to like picture books. And this is just about the best picture book I know of (on motor racing). A caveat though, in part I like this book because I can remember the era depicted. To those not so chronologically blessed (or cursed?) the scenes depicted might just be ho-hum black and white pictures of old cars. Jesse Alexander is arguably the best motor racing photographer of the 50’s and 60’s, a period that I consider to be the golden age of motor racing, an appellation which no doubt, at least someone has ascribed to any given decade on the calendar. Jesse Alexander has devoted most of his life to documenting motorsports, an involvement which began in the early 1950’s at the time of the birth of the sports car movement in the USA. Over the years, his work has appeared in most of the world’s prominent automotive publications including Car & Driver, Road & Track and Automobile. His interest began from seeing Clark Gable making a lap of honor in his Jaguar XK120 at a race in Palm Springs. Then there was Phil Hill in his Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, as well as Johnny von Neumann driving the first Porsche 356 to appear in California. These were the personalities who introduced him, and many others to motorsports. Jesse has authored numerous books including At Speed, Forty Years of Motorsport Photography, Porsche

Moments, and this book. His work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and as part of an exhibition of sports photography at the 1996 Summer Olympics. DRIVEN: Is a classic, not a new publication. It consists of page after page of mostly full-page pictures; matte black & white, befitting the times and giving the book a museum/art gallery-like feel. An appendix provides thumbnails of the pictures with very comprehensive captions describing the circumstances of the scene depicted. In true PCA fashion, It’s the People not the Cars that get the most attention in these write-ups. Particularly for the ‘bench racers’ who can remember the good old days of the 50’s and 60’s, or at least recognize the driver’s faces or names, it is a chance to refresh the impressions of a bygone era of motor racing, an era when racing was still a sport and not big business. For the young whippersnappers, it is a chance to glimpse the days when motorsports was much more of an audience participation event than the lawyers will allow these days.

The 110 Plates show Sports Cars and Formula 1 cars, drivers and engines. Porsche content is provided by numerous pictures of Porsche Spyders of various vintages. The pictures have a very ‘intimate,’ snapshot quality because they were taken when photographers, and even spectators, could get up close and personal with the drivers and crew, and those involved were focused on the racing, not dressing and posing to make a good impression for the sponsor, of which there were none in those days. Driven: The Racing Photography of Jesse Alexander 1954-1962 is a hard cover book of 144, 8-1/2 x 11 inch pages. As this is written, new copies are still available on www.amazon.com/books for $48.99. Search on Jesse Alexander.

T

he Annual PCA-OCR Brunch and Meeting took place at the beautiful Tustin Ranch Golf Club on January 7, 2018. The weather was perfect and this was the third year that our OCR Club enjoyed the hospitality, food and scenic landscape that Tustin Ranch Golf Club is known for. For our new OCR members, you might be interested in knowing our bylaws require the Orange Coast Region to conduct an annual meeting to install new officers. Historically, past meeting sites included The Phoenix Club, held during the end of December; however, when I became Vice President four years ago, I realized it was getting more difficult and expensive to secure a location able to accommodate 100 to 200 members and include food, beverages and ample parking. These February 2018 | PANDO 19

December events were usually held on a Friday night and unfortunately often conflicted with either other company and/or friend’s holiday parties resulting in limited attendance. I decided to research various event sites available for early January, which included three golf courses. My goal, in addition to those previously stated, was to find a site that could provide good food at a fair, reasonable price, and a pleasant place for people to chat and get to know each other. Tustin Ranch Golf Club offered the best option, allowing us to “share” space with their membership and their open invitation to the public for a nice brunch, resulting in keeping the price down for the food and beverages. We started going to Tustin Ranch three years ago, and with the assistance of Jessica Tjan of Tustin Ranch and the capable staff of Javier and others, we’ve been consistently well served. I sincerely appreciate all of their assistance regarding planning, set up and help throughout our entire brunch and meeting.

20 PANDO | February 2018

This year, I provided a final number of attendees to Jessica on January 2nd of 133 people. However, due to a bad flu/cold season affecting a lot of our members, regrettably, we had a number of no-shows, and I’m so sorry each of you could not attend. We did have a glass of champagne for you! Food was excellent as usual with the mix of seafood, omelets and carved food, along with eggs, bacon, sausage and of course desserts. It appeared that everyone was satisfied with the food and service and I don’t think anyone left hungry! This year Norm Follis, our new Vice President, and Monica Asbury, your OCR Club Secretary and Goodie Store Mogul, suggested a talent show to provide a little entertainment for the group. Denny Asbury started out with a standup routine to warm up the crowd and was comically pulled off the stage by a “gong show” type hook. Patty Hufnagel followed up with a moving fork magical trick, which thoroughly amazed the crowd. Who knew a High School Home Economics teacher could perform magic! Finally, Gary Sanders performed a guitar and vocal song which was terrific. Michelle Larsson, of Circle Porsche, provided a nice Porsche shirt as the prize for best of the talent show and with an applause poll, Gary Sanders was the unanimous winner. Good job Gary! The event was concluded with acknowledgment of departing Board members Greg Lush, Sandy Schwartz, David Piper and me, C. L. The results of the election of 2018/2019 new Board members were announced as follows: President, Barry Michaels; Membership Chairperson, Sharilyn Graybehl; Vice President, Norm Follis, who ran unopposed; Treasurer, Jim Miller, who was appointed when David Piper retired in July. Best of luck to our new Board and I am sure they will keep the club active, growing and prospering!

February 2018 | PANDO 23

I have always been a fan of Sports Cars. As a kid, many

of the gifts I received were Models of either Sports cars or Muscle cars. In my later years I purchased a Nissan 280ZX. Wow! My first Sports Car! Kicking it up a notch, I bought a 1986 Corvette a few years later. It wasn’t long before I had my mind set on getting my first Porsche! For me, it’s The Ultimate Sports Car (sorry BMW)! My dream started coming true when I was on my way home driving the 241 Toll Road in the pouring rain, and I was behind a 1984 Red Carrera Cabriolet. I tried keeping up with him all the way to my exit in Portola Hills. I was surprised when he turned toward where I lived. I continued following him as he passed my street and pulled into his driveway, only three blocks from where I lived. Okay, so I now I knew where he lived. The next morning, I drove by his house and he was in the driveway cleaning his beautiful 911. I nervously pulled in front of his house and told him what a gorgeous car he had and that I would love to buy it from him. He looked

24 PANDO | February 2018

at me somewhat surprised, smiled and said, “thanks, sorry but it’s not for sale.” I lingered as long as I could admiring the shiny Guards Red paint, all black interior and new black carpeting. We chatted for a while getting to know each other, and he indicated he owned a Surf Shop in Tustin, CA. My wife and I were getting married the following week so I told him to think it over and I would stop by after our honeymoon and make him an offer. He just smiled. Two weeks later I stopped by his house and made the offer. I was shocked when he said after discussing the selling of the Porsche with his wife, they both agreed it was time to sell since a truck would be more suitable for their surf shop business. After we made the deal, I told him I would drive by every now and then and he replied sadly, “please don’t,” indicating he would miss the car too much. We have now had our 911 for 18 years. Last year our “baby” was featured on the poster of the Del Mar Car Show, as well as the coffee mugs they sold at the event.

For The Love Of Porsche. Story and Pictures by Richard Blanco

Like most Porsche owners, we only take her out on perfect weather days. When I purchased the car, the owner had just replaced the convertible top. Since we only drive “her” when the weather is perfect, my top has not been up in the 18 years I owned her.I have no idea what the top even looks like after all these years. Some people ask “Don’t you wonder what the top looks like after all these years?” Actually, I don’t because I prefer this beauty to remain topless!

Mourns loss

W

of dear friend sponsor

alter Kienle, founder of Walter’s Automotive Group (Porsche, Audi, Mercedes Benz and Sprinter) passed away in December at the age of 89. Walter has been both friend and sponsor to PCA-OCR since 2008 when he was instrumental in establishing PCA-OCR’s first Porsche dealer sponsorship. At the time, the economy was robust, car sales were riding high and Walter agreed to sponsor us for 2008. However, despite the massive implosion of the auto industry, Walter remained enthusiastically committed to the Orange Coast Region. Walter and his staff never wavered or flinched in their support – they remain as committed today as they were when Walter’s Porsche signed on with PCA-OCR in 2008. 2018 represents Walter’s Porsche eleventh year of PCA-OCR sponsorship. As with many partnerships, success is only attained when it is beneficial for both partners – we believe that Walter’s and our Club not only met, but far exceeded this metric and we appreciate their continued support!! Walter and his organization has provided the resources allowing our entire club to host successful events at a level our club could not have sustained without the enthusiastic support of Walter Kienle. The success of the Driving Events Program is particularly in his debt. Thank you, Walter!!! Born in Germany to Swiss parents, Walter Kienle trained as a tool and die maker until he emigrated to the U.S. from Switzerland in 1948. Here, he worked as an automotive mechanic in Reading, PA until he joined the U.S. Army, and was a top student in tank school. As a non-commissioned officer (NCO) he was stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA where he was first introduced to the mild weather and friendly charm of Southern California. Upon his discharge as Sergeant First Class, Walter moved back to New York where he opened an automotive garage, married and started his family. Longing for that California sunshine, he returned to Riverside in 1960, and opened Walter’s Automotive Service with

an emphasis on European makes. Walter’s Automotive MercedesBenz Service Center was established in 1964 and became an authorized selling dealer in 1965. With the only dynometer in Riverside, Walter’s dyno-tuning skill became the secret weapon of sophisticated racers from Riverside International Raceway (RIR), such as Dan Gurney, a world-renowned racer in the 1960s. Porsche asked Walter to become an authorized dealer in 1992. Walter’s son, Steve, joined the family business in 1979 and now serves as General Manager for all three dealerships. Steve and his wife Cathy, have continued and expanded Walter’s contributions to the community. The annual Walter’s Children’s Charity Golf Tournament is quite successful and has contributed nearly $1.6 million to the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. Walter’s grandson, Jonathan, is the General Manager of the Audi franchise. Walter was a skilled mechanic. Steve says his father could fix anything. “He could listen to an automobile, smell the exhaust, and tell you if it was running rich or running lean. He could tell you if the timing was advanced or the timing was affected. Sitting in an automobile, he could tell you if it was running on all cylinders or not. He had the feel and the passion. He had a sixth sense to an automobile.” Walter remained active in his later years. “My dad was a true adventurer,” says Steve. “He had an amphibious airplane. He would go to Alaska - he’d go hunting and fishing for two or three months at a time, hunt and fish and live off the land.” Walter slowed down but never retired, keeping an office at the Mercedes-Benz store and using it frequently. Walter is survived by his wife, Helga; three children, Steve, Margaret and Rose; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. It is with great sadness that PCA-OCR says “Auf Wiedersehen Walter.”

Porsche Accident! An Analysis of a Self Inflicted

Single Car Crash. Story and Photo by Jim Marshall

The 951 S Turbo Porsche prior to the accident.

L earn from my experience how NOT to do this to your Porsche and embarrass yourself in front of your PCA friends, as I did!

This unfortunate event occurred over a decade ago but lessons learned are still valid today, especially with today’s high horsepower, high torque, turbocharged Porsches. Our home and our local PCA region at the time was the California Central Coast Region in San Luis Obispo. The Venue: PCA Tour event with the CCCR The Location: A winding narrow road in rural San Luis Obispo County The Vehicle: 1988 Porsche 951 S (944 turbo S) It was a crisp, cold early Saturday morning in late January. As we left the house, our lawn and nearby fields glinted with a thin sheen of frost. One by one, PCA members gathered from all directions at our rendezvous point, The Madonna Inn just off HWY 101 in San Luis Obispo. The tour event was to take us on twisty rural 34 PANDO | February 2018

roads through cattle grazing country, then to Los Osos Valley and finally, onto Morro Bay. Sadly, this author and his wife did not get very far. At 8AM our parade of thirty Porsches left the Madonna Inn. We soon turned off onto a narrow, winding, unfamiliar road. It wandered and twisted up and down hill through the open grazing land. Things were going well. Our group drove at a spirited pace but nothing excessive as the scenic road was not conducive to outright “speed”. Perhaps two miles went by when a very tight 180 degree switchback appeared at the bottom of a steep hill. I braked for the slow turn while keeping a good distance behind the car in front of us. Then, coming out of the turn, I applied the accelerator as one normally would. Suddenly, Wham! In an instant the Porsche flew straight into the embankment on the right side of the road. OMG! Luckily, the cars behind us were all able to avoid the carnage. Fortunately, my wife and I were not injured. The air bags did not deploy. Damage to the car appeared to be fairly moderate. A crushed right front fender, bent hood, and a broken fog light

Analysis : : Driving Attire : Shoes

This shoe is similar to the “accident shoe” Note the thick, rather inflexible sole-Especially when not broken in. A typical running/tennis/walking shoe

Porsche Design driving shoe Manufactured by Adidas. Note the very thin flexible sole. Bolstered heel (heel and toe downshifting)

along with the fractured front fascia. At the time, Porsche Stability Management was still many years away. Could PSM have saved the day? Before that day, I had never had an accident in 20 years of Porsche ownership. How did this happen? I was a veteran of both PCA and POC driving schools. This was a slow 15-MPH switchback turn for Pete’s sake!Did I feel foolish? Embarrassed? You bet! The car was burgundy in color. (Officially, Maraschino red metallic.). The Porsche 944 Turbo S (properly known as a 951 S in Porsche speak) was lightly modified. I had “chipped” the car a year earlier. It was up from the stock 250hp to 300hp. In addition, I had installed a turbocharger “Boost Enhancer.” It initiates boost at a lower RPM to reduce the storied Porsche “Turbo lag”. The day after the accident, after the trauma had subsided and nerves calmed, I returned to the scene to analyze the mishap. I recalled that the road appeared to be freshly paved. Sure enough, it was. And, it was very slick. Could the slick, very cold surface have been a factor that chilly morning? (No frost or ice was present.) The tires were not fully warmed up. Was that a factor? Then, it hit me. Another variable had been at play. That morning I had put on a brand new pair of tennis shoes. Never worn. I tried to re-live the accident in my mind. I recalled something just a split second before the accident. When I applied the accelerator, it seemed the normal feel of the gas pedal was different. It felt somewhat vague. Could I have pressed the accelerator too far, too quickly? This could have spun up the turbo, perhaps even sooner because of the Boost Enhancer. The rear wheels, in mid turn, could have lost traction on the slick, cold asphalt. Then, suddenly, regaining traction, launching the Porsche in a straight trajectory-right into the embankment. OUCH! I remembered a driver training event when our instructor talked about the advantage of driving shoes. How they provide the driver with maximum tactile “feel” during competitive driving.

Simpson racing shoe. Again, the thin flexible sole for maximum “feel”.

I put the new, suspect tennis shoes back on and took the family car for a drive on familiar roads. Sure enough, the shoes felt stiff and insulating compared to the older, worn, but familiar and comfortable pair of tennis shoes they had replaced. The difference in “feel” was evident. Does the old saying ring true here? Accidents are usually caused, not by a single factor, but by several factors. Had the road not been slick and cold would the accident have not occurred? Possibly. If the tires had been fully warmed up? Possibly. Was the “Boost Enhancer” a factor? Possibly. If my old tennis shoes had been worn that morning could the accident have been avoided? Probably. Remove any one factor, would the accident not have occurred? Hard to say for sure. However, I am convinced that my choice of foot attire that morning was the primary variable that could have prevented the calamity. LESSON: Familiar shoes are very important when driving! They are the interface between the driver’s input and the engine’s response. P.S. The insurance company decided to “total” the Porsche. The unibody had deformed enough that repair costs would exceed the value of the car. Ugh. The good news. We bought the “salvaged” Turbo S back from the insurance company for a bargain price. All of the Turbo S mechanicals were then transplanted onto our son’s 1986 951 turbo. This included front and rear suspension and brakes, forged wheels, turbocharger, ECU, and transaxle. (All are Porsche factory parts unique to the Turbo S model) Thanks to a lead from a fellow PCA member, and the insurance proceeds, I was eventually able to locate a replacement car, another Turbo S! RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

See the differences? In many ways NOT MUCH! Both monsters of power and bravado! But for the 911 almost nothing is as quick or able to run as incredible fast or as long than any human can endure or master.

Napier Blue Bird, and her aero engine Roadster

However you see these cars, they are BOTH inspiring of what mankind is doing with the technology he has, and when he hasn’t, he, or she, creates it. What we see today in 2018 is truly amazing. And as for the Porsche it is the safest, quickest, meanest machine a human can push, FLAT OUT, AMAZING, but sane?

Our beloved Turbo + 40 creative years of evolution.

ASK A MECHANIC Questions 11-24-2017 : 1 : How to repair the peeled carbon fiber from the window defrosting area inside the car. What cement glue to use?

2 : I have 18k on my car. Last major service

was at 13k around 5 years ago. The dealer wanted to have another major service done. Doesn’t it make sense to have a major service performed only with 5k miles driven? Please advise. Thanks, Tony

Reply:

I am unfamiliar with Carbon fiber repairs on automotive types. However, I would simply try super glue. It holds EVERYTHING! Just make sure you have the loose ends precisely & correctly aligned, then held in place firmly when applying. WEAR throwaway gloves!

Carbon Fiber, real carbon Fiber with GFR cured in Autoclave under exact high pressure and heat, makes a fantastically strong and light-weight part. But is not perfect, never was, likely never will be.

The Factory advice will be one thing: “Replace with new factory part.”

“C.F.” Carbon Fiber gets “voids” during manufacturing and to this day detected by eddy current scanning, and, get this, tapping on the entire panel with a Quarter and listening for a dead-like sound.

In Aviation that is the norm, but for a car, and NOT on a non-critical aerodynamic aero-aide, I think you can do a fix yourself, much simpler.

On a corporate Jet aircraft like the Gulfstream G-2, G-3, G-4, G-5, etc., they have many carbon fiber panels on them and there is one area especially interesting. UP on the tall “T-tail” (that’s February 2018 | PANDO 41

about 25’ feet up off the ground), A & P technicians must inspect it on a regular basis. We would get to it on a hydraulic lift platform. Once up there, inspecting the Carbon Composite tail surfaces is a 2 day job to complete the required inspections. We literally checked the whole tail! YOU may ask: WHY? Well, most “carbon” amenities found in aircraft are made in strict controlled environments and require frequent inspections during the manufacturing process. Some carbon parts are X-Rayed to insure their quality is 100% perfect. You just don’t want a carbon panel coming unglued at mach 0.89 at 55,000 feet. *1 Look up on-line articles on the Concorde making non standard landings in Iceland for control surface issues. However on cars, and especially these days, Most “Carbon Fiber” is a partial carbon GFR composite product. This is all fine and good for looks and some lighter weight on non-critical parts. But unless you are piloting an F-1 McLaren or other mega dollar exotic, you likely have a partial “carbon” part on your P-car.

42 PANDO | February 2018

Having replaced the T.S.S. (Turn Signal Switch) with a new one 3 years ago, I was more than annoyed when I noticed the BLUE High Beam Indicator light coming on during acceleration or hitting a small bump on the road? Wiggling the T.S. Switch and the High Beam Light indicator instantly went out, and it worked otherwise normally.

irritation to oncoming drivers! This had to be fixed, NOW!

However, this seemed to be happening more often and it was not just the indicator coming on, it was the HIGH BEAMS going on, and as you can imagine causing

Unlike Ignition contact points, Porsche provides no electrical arching dampening for these high load light switch contacts? NOT nice!

Having taken these switches apart before by drilling out the rivets and carefully disassembling and cleaning the contacts points, I saw electrical contact points pitted as these switches carry the full current load of the headlights on them.

One thing I would suggest is do as many 911 owners do, and install a relay into your headlight system. This not only eliminates the high amperage on your T.S.S., but helps put more amperage to your lights. This is wise cost savings, and more efficient use of your hard earned cash? Head light low-HIGH BEAM Relay Kits are inexpensive, readily available, and easy to install. This will then use battery-Alternator power through the relay’s #30 terminal and through to relay terminal #87 and onto the lights. NOW, only the low amperage signal current (#86) is flowing through the T.S.S. Now, the Flasher and High Beams are running off the relay. But back to the misbehaving T.S.S:

Fig 7. Green arrow points to #4 and #5 contacts. This is normal and is a minimum amount of distance between the #2 to #3. The problem I had was the point contacts #2 and #3 were just barely touching so any movement made them touch and light up the Brights!

Fig 9. “HI” BEAMS ON: #2 -#3 made. #1, #4, #5 open

Shown here is an out-of-the-box T.S.S for easier photography.

First off the outer contacts #1-#2-#3 are very delicate and have very small clearance. I took the steering wheel off and removed the two covers over the steering column, T.S.S. and windshield wiper switches. Then looking with a very bright light you can see the contacts points.

FIG 10. SAVING $250.00 dollars for new switch to bend #3 contact spring so it stays open in Neutral position.

Fig 4. Drawing: High and Low Flash Points Fig 5. Made contact between #1 and #2. Close but Note #4 and #5 are deeper inside the switch.Normal clearance between contacts #2 and #3 . At lever’s Neutral and ’low beams’ position.

Fig 8. FLASH: High Beams ON: #1 #2 & #4 #5 made, #3 Open. Both low AND HIGH BEAMS are ON.

You can do this by removing steering wheel, then remove the plastic covers from steering column. Then with sturdy needle nose pliers, bend #3 contact spring rearward so when flipping HI to Low or Flash the #2 to #3 contacts stays open. That’s it. $250 bucks saved. PS Clean and lube with Bosch or dielectric grease the horn contact ring. Godspeed Leslie Rice PCA-OCR Technical Editor riceturbos@sbcglobal.net

FIG 6. Shows the points as they should look (after adjustment) with covers off and the T.S.S. in the ‘off’ or Neutral position. Note the small clearance between contact points #2 and #3.

We answer questions, inquiries, and differing points of view.
