BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE President

Greg Lush

When I watched the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” in the 70’s, I remember thinking that it seemed so far away. Wow, is that out in the future! Now, as we slide down the slope towards 2020, our imaginations must be set free to accept the rapidly changing world around us. 2020 will be here before we know it. However, I know that one thing will not change and that is the sense of family and community we all share being part of PCA Orange Coast Region (OCR). Each year that I have been involved with the club has given me so much more than I feel that I contributed, thank you so much for a wonderful 2016 and I am looking forward to the great things that we can do together in 2017.

endless commitments to make OCR the BEST region of PCA! Thank you all so much and keep up the great work as we enter into 2017.

The future of our club depends on a fine balance between our existing members and new members, spanning all ages. You will see in the coming months our continued commitment to this fantastic organization and a laser focus on recruiting new members and greater diversity amongst our car types (let’s get more of those owning the four door, front engine Porsches). We are also seeking young and first-time drivers as the older Boxsters are in a great price window for many of these future Porsche enthusiasts. We need to capture and foster as many car enthusiasts as possible to offset the “autonomous vehicle” slippery slope for the “driver” of the future.

• •

In 2016, we continued to gain momentum as an organization, within double-digits of beating San Diego for the largest region in Zone 8. 2017 is our year (free breakfast for all transfers from SDR to OCR). Here are some statistics that you will be proud of. I can tell you that I am proud of our members for participating and our volunteers for their

Socially, that is our fans in the digital atmosphere, are doing great. While the numbers may seem as bit low, they are actually an incredible accomplishment. We can give a huge thanks to Gary Labb for his efforts. Well done, Gary, thank you. • • •

When it comes to our memberships numbers, Sandy Schwartz is the master. Thank you, Sandy, for the work that you put into welcoming and keeping up with our members, here are the numbers: •

As of December 2, 2015 | primary 1478 and affiliate 880 | total members 2358 As of December 2, 2016 | primary 1566 and affiliate 907 | total members 2473 Our highest one month membership was November 2016 | primary 1575 and affiliate 910 | total members 2485

Keeping us all in “Porsche” style falls squarely on the shoulders of Monica Asbury. Monica, and her band of volunteers, make sure that our events are filled with opportunities to purchase the

latest Porsche-related products. Many of these products have the creative touch of Monica’s husband, Denny. Thanks to Monica, Denny and the myriad of volunteers helping event after event. As with Gary and Sandy, here is a brief note from Monica: “Goodie Store continues to sell the everpopular Club Jackets every month and is projected to sell over 400 jackets to members during Q1 of 2017. Most recently, Goodie Store introduced a Porsche Martini racing-designed shirt. Anticipating the shirt might be a hit with the members, the Goodie Store doubled their typical order and sold out at Breakfast Club in less than one hour! OCR’s Goodie Store continues to have new offerings every month for the men and ladies of the Club, and always a Porsche-themed rhinestone top for the ladies in February!” So there you have it, a recap of some of the many accomplishments by your dedicated group of volunteers. As we enter 2017, I urge you to attend as many events as possible, the PCAOCR application (Apple PCA-OCR and Google PCA-OCR) is a great place to stay current on the latest activities and conversations by community members. For our volunteers, those individuals donating countless hours, from shiny to speedy and all activities in-between, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The people of OCR are the best folks I have had an opportunity to be around. Thank you all for making OCR a great place and I am looking forward to another fantastic year. a general and sincere “thank you” will suffice to all those not mentioned. We do owe current Production Manager, Kristen Jaoui, a thank you. She has kept us on time and more or less intelligently applied for the last little while. She is our professional.

Thanks to all

If plans proceed, this will be my last “Editor’s Column”, dear readers. I have been doing this for quite a long time now; and as all good things must, this too shall end. It will be my pleasure to introduce Marcia Salans as my replacement editor. She will be her own person and carry on the tradition of the “Pando”, formerly “Pandemonium”, into the future. I wish her well, as we all should and only hope she has the fun and enjoyment that I have had in the preparation of your own humble little club magazine…… although we are Award Winning at that! There are so many to thank for the work on the Pando during my tenure that I cannot, in all reality, name them all. So, rather than leave someone out, I will try to skim the top here with the trust that

Our Advertising Co-Directors, Cooper and Nicole Boggs, run interface with advertisers and sometimes have the sticky job of reminding them of payments and that sort of business stuff that editors much appreciate. The Classified Ads Editor, Mr. Bob Weber, is a true Porsche guy and a totally reliable source that has worked, more or less, behind the scenes for many years making sure that you and I can get those ads that we drool over. Good on ya, Mr. Weber. Our Technical Writer, Lee Rice, is a true club treasure. I know of NO ONE else in our region and most other regions that can fabricate, install, and make work the variety of go fast gear that makes a 911 into more of a….911! I think he may be unique to OCR, as I do read and/or scan other regional periodicals and there are no other people of Lee Rice’s caliber out there that I know about. In addition to these folks, I would add Mr. Denny Asbury as the art/layout contributor, again working behind the scenes to give us a more professional look and presentation.

Mr. Sandy Schwartz is another person who has been totally reliable in getting to us our membership information month-after-month. Mr. Gerry Crews for taking new member photos at Breakfast Club meetings. Thanks for helping us recognize new members (and their cars!), Gerry! Judy and Pete Lech have been club historians for some years now. A couple who have shared much of their time and humor with us through many Porsche adventures. I am personally now so old that I set off burglar theft alarms when I leave museums! Our Social Media Director, Gary Labb, who, despite his Baby Boomer origins, understands all of this digital stuff and helps us maintain contact with millennials and Gen X’ers who are out there right now on their smart phones and tablets outsmarting us, even as this is being written. Sponsorship Director, Mr. Bob Scheussler, has gifted OCR with a solid foundation of event sponsorships from actual Porsche dealerships. These have been good for both parties, and given us the propellant necessary to carry on the most active and successful driver series on the west coast. Of course, I say this in all humility (not really I am very proud to brag) as a dyed in the wool OCR club veteran. A quick shout out on the side to the other 30 or so members of the Scheussler clan who have aided in this endeavour. And, of course, Mr. Steve Eguina.

YOUR CAR OUR REPUTATION

We Need Another Two-Tenths! Story by Rob Alen, Photos by Brian Cleary

Laguna Beach resident Michael Lewis always wanted to be a race driver, and now he has realized his goal. In 2016, he drove a Porsche 911 GT3R in the Pirelli World Challenge. He began the season with Porsche Motorsport veteran, Patrick Long, as a teammate, and by mid-season he and Patrick moved to different teams. Michael finished out the year in the No. 98 Calvert Dynamics Porsche 911 GT3R, and was often the fastest Porsche driver on the track. For 2016, Porsche Motorsport North America granted Michael with the status, “Porsche Motorsport North America Young Driver.” Here he offers his insight into modern road racing. Q: You have been racing for a few years now and show progressive success...when was the moment you decided, “I want to race cars...”? To be honest with you, in my mind, it has always been, “why wouldn’t I be racing cars”? It started out as a sort of focused hobby with my father. From the moment we started together in a gokart within a parking lot out in Irvine,

it just seemed logical in my mind to do whatever it took to get to the next level. Q: In racing, when is the best moment? Worst moment? Best moment = making my engineer and team proud. Wins of course, but also with some inspirational drives to get the team noticed. Worst moment = crashes, spins, or any significant mistake. Q: Between races, you go to school...in that time what do you do, if anything special, to be a racing driver? Cal State Fullerton is my home away from home. In addition to being a normal student embedded in “normal life,” I tend to mountain bike throughout the many trails in Laguna Beach. I also work part time at CXC Simulations; they are based in Los Angeles. Q: When you are asked, “we need another two-tenths off the lap time,” where do you find it?

If you hear that on the radio during a qualifying session, let’s say, and the radio transmission is hopefully something like “2 tenths to pole,” a few things go through your mind. One, the lap you just did is something to base how to get more time knocked off. If that previous lap seemed quite solid and you feel there are some places to improve, you just focus all of your energy to try to do the impossible of nailing each sector and each part of the track that you think there might be a tiny bit of margin left. Work to nail the lap, rather than to think “am I on course for a good lap?” By the way, going faster is not always about braking later. Two, in terms of where you find more speed, it is probably in sections that incorporate a corner that tends to be your weak point or as I mentioned above, that you felt (per a driver’s feeling and per your dash telling you) that you could have released the brakes a bit earlier or something from that previous lap. Basically, go as fast as you can and after two to three laps if you hear that you are within 1 tenth (2 tenths is often a big chunk of time) then try everything you can to squeeze it out. January 2017 | PANDO 9

It occurs in each turn just a thousandth here and there will add up. Q: If there were a time in motorsports history you could drive in, when would that be? This is a great question. I have never thought about that really. I have two answers, one would be the future. Let’s see how the future plays out and what racing will look like then. Who knows, maybe it could be radically different. In addition, I think the 1970’s Le Mans era, as depicted in the Steve MQueen film, was very cool. The Porsche 917 cars depicted in that film were always in my mind when I was in elementary school and middle school. Of late, The mid 1990’s ITC and DTM racing looks like it was incredible as well. Q: If we plucked an enthusiast off the street who wanted to go racing, what would their first mistake be? Not anticipating the turns or the course. Racing and driving is all about 10 PANDO | January 2017

anticipating turns and feelings. I would say the main thing that would happen would be that he or she would struggle to remember the course in high-detail and also struggle to remember what happened in that turn on the previous lap (to not repeat the mistake). But, who knows, maybe there are some people out there who would be quite good from the get go. Q: You have driven open wheel and closed wheel, what techniques transfer? It is all the same. That is the beauty of racing. There are all different shapes and sizes of vehicles, but the principles are all the same. Driving a GT car, let’s say, you will feel the car roll a bit more under braking and turning than a formula car. However, the way you brake, turn into the corner, minimize as much coast as you can, and how you throttle is all the same idea. You just adapt to the feeling of the car you are in and then go from there.

Q: How helpful are video racing games? I truly believe simulators help with getting your mindset in “race mode” when you are away from the circuit. It also helps in learning new tracks for how corners will look and feel. As mentioned earlier, I work at CXC Simulations, and if you visit their website, you will be introduced to all that the virtual world has to offer. Q: How hard (or easy) is it to win? Winning is extremely hard. Work your butt off and you will have the best chance at success. However, nothing is ever guaranteed. Let’s see how our No. 98, Calvert Dynamics, Circle Porsche of Long Beach, Discount Tire, and Curb Records Porsche 911 GT3 R perform at the tricky Sonoma Raceway and Laguna Seca raceway for the final Pirelli World Challenge events! Thank you for your time If you would like to follow Michael Lewis, visit www.mjlracing.com.

AUTO-X CORNER

Life Long Friends Still Racing Story by Lisa Taylor, Photos by Flying L Racing

Since the early 1970’s, Tom Ridings and John Landgraf started racing together as teenagers at the Sand Drag races. They then graduated to the asphalt drag strip, racing an Alcohol Funny Car. Tom ended up breaking his own national record 7 times. With John’s help, they raced at every NHRA race across the country. In 1978, Tom won the Winter Nationals at Pomona, earning his first Wally!

Trials. John Landgraf is leading the CC05 class in his ‘93 red 964. Tom Ridings is currently in 2nd in CC16 and 3rd in CC14, after changing classes midway through the year. In the CC16 class, Kraig Amador is currently in first place (in Flying L Racing’s former ‘15 GT3).

After 15 years of drag racing, the two moved into the off-road world with SCORE racing. After 15 years of offroad racing, they accomplished multiple podium finishes, including the Baja 1000, the Baja 500, and the San Felipe 250.

We lucked out with a beautiful day for the November Auto-X. For the fifth year in a row, Flying L Racing supplied tacos to all the racers and guests. To our surprise, special guests and long time friends, Terri and Jeff Zwart, joined us for some autocross fun. The Zwart’s arrived in a 1966 Porsche 906 race car. It was mostly a hill climb racer in the early years and has a vintage race history through the late 70’s.

Fast forward to November 13, 2016, the two of them are still enjoying racing, now with Porsches in Auto-X and Time 14 PANDO | January 2017

I wonder what Tom and John will be racing in 15 more years???

We all were delighted when Zwart took the 906 out on the course! The other drivers where shocked to see a 906 out on the course and, to top it off, with Jeff Zwart driving! After he finished for the day, he and Terri got back into the hot car and drove it home. No trailering for the 906! Tom has had the pleasure of crewing for many of Jeff’s Pikes Peak races. Tom and I were proud to crew for his last race, which marked his 8th win! To continue on with our Auto-X day, Team Skittles was well represented out on the track. Jennie Monroe, in her new ‘16 Mint Green Cayman GTS, won her class of SS06L. Eric Monroe, in his gorgeous ‘13 Riviera Blue 991S (also formerly owned by Flying L Racing) won his class SS07 and 12th in B.R.I.

I want to give a special shout out to our women drivers. Patricia Lynn Taylor won her class, CC08L, in her ‘69 911T. Lorri Trotter won CC10 and 10th in B.R.I and fastest girl! One of my other favorite woman drivers, Christine Newcomer, won CC13 in her ‘07 Black Cayman S. She can drive! Tiffani Lewis also won class SS01L in her ‘02 Boxster and Lisa Quinby won in CC16L. Karen Guthorn won SS07L for the year. Lastly, let’s hear it for Connie Somers getting 2nd in her ‘11 Boxster Spyder. And of course, our top B.R.I. of the day went to (drum roll please) Carl “CR Dutch” in his ‘06 Boxster. Congratulations to all the drivers. Hope to see all of you one at our last Auto-X of the year on December 11th.

The helmet that’s been in about every model of Porsche

I want to thank Walter’s Porsche of Riverside for sponsoring our Auto-X’s again this year. The team at Walter’s is so friendly and helpful. What a great place to purchase and service your Porsche! We are all looking forward to the end of the year awards at their beautiful new location. If you have never tried Auto-X, be careful, it’s very addictive!

Everyone is familiar with the three F’s on Thanksgiving: Food, Family and Football. Well, it’s time to add a 4th : F as in “FAST!” We all love our Porsches and there is nothing more thrilling than getting them up to their proper speed. What better way to end the Thanksgiving weekend than to head out with our Porsche family to The FASTEST Track in the West! On Monday, November 28th, the OCR DE Team put together a wonderful track day at Big Willow Raceway in Rosamond. A group of us started our day by sharing breakfast together under the desert sunrise. We had some very experienced drivers at the Table along with one newbie, Marcela. Excitement was building even in the brisk, cold dawn morning. With the first conversation, we knew we were going to have a fun day. Someone asked me, “How did you sleep?” Since I had been trying to get rid of nighttime cough, I said: “Not that great. I just can’t seem to shake this cough.” Eric proceeds to ask me: “Do you have a full face helmet?” The rest of the table is appalled! Why, do I need a full face helmet? Was the lack of sleep really that obvious? To hide the bags under my eyes?! Yikes! As he realized what he just implied, he says: “No, No – have you ever sneezed wearing a full face helmet?!” Yes, the laughter was almost as loud as our exhausts!

GREEN IS THE NEW

RED

After topping off our tanks, we caravanned a short distance to the track. Chuck Bartolon was checking us in and pairing instructors with students. Our OCR President, Greg Lush, was teching our cars. I have to admit, I liked the little tech stars we received (instead of the normal white dots!). Personally, I think they were left over from Chuck’s daughter’s craft days, but I appreciated the re-gifting! It’s always fun reconnecting with track friends you are pitted next to, as well as meeting new ones. There is lots of comradeship (especially when you are all FREEZING!) But we all encourage 18 PANDO | January 2017

each other and ask advice, like what line did you drive on Corner 3? After emptying our cars and going through tech, it was time for the driver’s meeting. I have to give the DE crew credit for adding a little humor to all the safety items that have to be covered. Now, it isn’t a surprise that Chuck and Greg tend to have a little competitiveness on the track. So it wasn’t a shock when Greg was the example in the driver’s meeting to be the car BEHIND Chuck! Of course, Greg countered by mentioning the only reason he was behind Chuck was because he couldn’t see anything in front of him with that cloud of smoke trailing Chuck’s car! Safety rules are always something we need to adhere to, and the knowledge of flag meanings are important. But why was the missing flag the “Meatball Flag” – just wondering? For those that Autocross, we also had to be reminded 20 PANDO | January 2017

John Ulmer coming onto the straight away

that the Yellow Flag has different meanings on the track versus the Autocross Course. The fun continued with group assignments. It is rather common to use different color run groups at track days. Red is typically the “fast” group – i.e., not limited to only passing on the straightaways. The Green Group is usually the newbie group. But today the Red Group became the Green Group… thus Green is the new Red title! It was rather fun listening to the Type A personality Red Group drivers asking why they were in the Green Group. I assume DE is on a budget and had strict instructions to use up all existing green stickers before buying new red ones! But now the fun begins – it’s Track Time! If we only had a schedule! It was carefully prepared by Chuck and left behind on his kitchen counter! No worries. We have paper and a microphone

and nothing can dampen our spirits! (Maybe the cold…did I mention it was cold?) For those unfamiliar with Willow Springs Raceway, we were on the 2.5 mile track referred to as Big Willow. It is a rather simple track with only 9 turns – but it has some nice elevation changes and it was built for Speed! Turn 8 is the fastest turn on any raceway west of the Mississippi River! This is followed by the decreasing radius turn 9 and then an impressive straightaway. From newbies to the “Green Group”, we all had our stories. I am happy to report that Greg Lush (aka “Shifty”) and his new CAE shifter kept him from missing any gears! We are so happy he doesn’t need to move up to a PDK! Marcela Aguirre couldn’t keep the smile off her face. She had only one previous track day and was already passing other cars! Her comments included: “Speechless at Willow Springs” ….

Dwight Moore in his 2016 GTS passing “Shifty” Greg Lush

Dwight Moore and Ed McRae of Walter’s Porsche, are right behind John Ulmer

“Amazing” …“Super Fast”….. “Thank you PCA-OCR for an unforgettable day”…. “Can’t wait for the next time!” She will advance to that GREEN Group in no time at all with her natural skill! Another newbie couple, Bruce and Irene Macauley, were also smiling! (Though perhaps all of our smiles were frozen on from the cold!) They were invited by Bill Lafitte. Bill stated, “I like that you emphasize safety and personable responsibility while encouraging fun and friendship.” …. “My experience on the track was one of the best ever with the awareness and courtesy shown to each other.” My favorite comment was overheard from Djun Leflang talking to her husband, John. She was asking how his instruction from Scott Mann was going. John replied, “I am driving FASTER than I ever have before!” Djun replied,

John Ulmer in his 2013 Boxster S

with no hesitation and perfect logic, “isn’t that the point?” A big thanks to all the Instructors – we love that you share your expertise! Cheers to: Greg Lush, Dwight Moore, Roger Ang, Bruce Guarino, George Pappagelis, Kris Scheussler, Nick Perdikaris, and Chuck Bartolon. Past Zone 8 Representative, Michael Dolphin, showed up to personally instruct too! I was lucky to hitch a ride with both George and Nick. It is always amazing to witness first hand, the feel and sounds of different cars and driver’s techniques, especially when they are as skilled as these two! We were fortunate to have Zone 8 Chief Driving Instructor, Scott Mann, attend and give his expertise to OCR drivers. He was jumping from car to car, chatting away and offering amazing tips. We can’t thank our Sponsor, Walter’s Porsche, enough for their continuous

support of OCR’s driving events. Ed McRae brought along two members of his Walter’s Team. The three were enjoying the track and mingling with the other drivers. We were glad they were able to join us! We definitely love to get those beautiful toys up to speed, but the camaraderie of Porsche Friends makes it twice as special (especially when they show you the perfect line!) I may not be the fastest driver out there, but I aspire to someday be in the new Green Group! Eric Marc-Aurele even took an amazing picture showing my Spyder’s weather covering deflecting at speed! Track Days with our cars and friends are always exhilarating! Hope to see you all at the next one. Well, maybe not ALL of you, I don’t want to share too much track time!

Walter’s & Beyond Gimmick Rallye

Story and Photos by L. Moore (alias: I.B. Lost)

Historic Elsinore

Sunday, November 13, 2016, was a pleasant, sunny and basically clear day in Southern California, as the OCR Porsche rallye folks (Rallistas) gathered at Walter’s new Porsche facility on Indiana Avenue in Riverside for the last PCA-OCR rallye of 2016. Everyone enjoyed Walter’s hospitality, which included coffee, yummy munchies and a VIP tour of the new facility led by the General Manager, Ed McRae. Registration began at 8:30 and the first car departed onto the rallye route at approximately 9:40. The challenges in this event were: #1: to follow the Route Instructions (ODD or EVEN, depending on your assigned car number) through several local communities, including the Gavilan Hills, Perris, Menefee, and Elsinore in south eastern Riverside County, #2: to

locate the Photo Objects presented, #3: to navigate correctly through several “mazes”, several of which required mileage calculations, #4: to check several “City Limit signs” to determine comparative community populations, #5: to correctly observe the clever border decorations of a community play field, and #6: to keep track of how many rail-road crossings were crossed and how many bridges were passed under. All totaled, just a nice drive in the countryside! A couple of teams made the drive more challenging than it needed to be. One classic side trip was that one team missed a turn off of Van Buren in Riverside and drove out to the vicinity of March Air Force Base before making a correction… Oops! The amazing thing about their adventure was that they finished with a

very presentable score, even with their side trip. So, who cares; they had a nice drive. Another team explained that they spent so much energy worrying about on-coming traffic on the Lake Elsinore Country Club Heights District roads that they had trouble enjoying the surprising view out over the lake. Their concern was understandable considering the width of that roadway (built circa 1925) would today be considered narrow for an urban bike-trail. The drive capped off with a nice drive over the mountain to finish at Selma’s Chicago Pizzeria and Brew Pub in Ladera Ranch in south OC, affording the Rallistas an opportunity for some lunch and libation while our efficient and trusted Score Lady, Gloria Moore, did her work to decipher the contestant’s Control Cards. January 2017 | PANDO 23

Regarding the “just a nice drive in the country side”. Well, maybe it was not that easy! While everyone actually found Selma’s and seemed to be smiling at the end, the average scores were, as a group, subdued. No one went high, but the majority of the scores were bunched between 8 and 10 out of the 19 possible. Four teams posted superior scores, two tied at 14 and two tied at 12 so we awarded two sets (Driver and Navigator) of Gold Medals and two sets of Silver Medals. The Gold Medal winners were the teams of Glen Billings & Karl Kreisant (driver & navigator) and C.L. Jarusik & Nancy Troast. The Silver Medal winners were the teams of Bryan & Lynn Hustings and Sean Rafferty & Gavin Dent.

At Selma’s Pizzeria/Pub

I believe each of these teams has stood on the podium before, so it appears that on this rally, unlike some others, experience might have made a difference. In any case, CONGRATULATIONS to the Medalists. And to the non-medalists, take heart, because you persevered through a fairly challenging Gimmick Rallye. So, one more time, congratulations to our Medal winners, and thank you to Walter’s Porsche for the morning hosting, and also thank you to Selma’s for putting up with us one more time. And last but not least, a special thank you to all who participated because your participation in Club Events is what drives our club.

Up in the air antique

Planning Ahead

The 2017 Rallye Plan is that the 1st rallye of the New Year will be in the early Spring and will be a Poker Rallye (winner wins the $$ Pot) and will require route following and a bit of luck. Happy Holidays and drive safe.

Sean Rafferty and Gavin Dent, the young eyes!

The

Marines Are Here!

Story by Monica Asbury, Photos by Joe Barnet, Gary Labb and Paul Novotne 28 PANDO | January 2017

It started at 9:45 a.m. with a frantic call from my guard gate, “Mrs. Asbury, the Marines are here, the Marines are here with their cannon and humvees and a squad of Marines and several “Dress Blues”, Mrs. Asbury, they’re at the front gate!” Half dressed, I ran downstairs, yelled for Denny (talk about a puzzled look on his face) to get to the gate and re-direct the Marines to the Central Park Picnic Shelter – they missed their landing site! – which fortunately, was only minutes from our home. After more than a few minutes of maneuvering the howitzer around the front gate fountain, and several neighbors waiting impatiently to exit the gate to get Suzy to dance practice, the Marines cautiously made their way to the Park…whew!

The Marines settled and grounded, Surf City Bounce House moved in, then “Bear”, HBPD’s static swat display, K9 Handler Wilson in tow with K9 Officer Marco and Equestrian Officer Lamboo with his Mount, Rowdy. BBQ coals beginning to glow over the careful watch of Mary and Dave Hong, and tables dressed by Scott Fleener, Malcolm Macondray and Gary Labb, as Santa pulled up in his Cabriolet sleigh. The show was about to begin. Just before the crowd hit, spreading the Christmas cheer was Dave Wright, who delighted the Marines when he graciously provided his 2014 911S Cabriolet to any who wanted a ‘test’ drive. Sounds of toys filling boxes and pitterpatter filled the air as children ran and leaped into Santa’s lap. Holiday music in the background and kids laughter coming from the bouncing house, Santa carefully listened to all the kids whispering their wish list. Delighted 30 PANDO | January 2017

children were surprised with a treat from Santa and off they went. The Marines pleased the crowd with their display of the Howitzer and Military trucks, while Captain Mike LeBlanc politely listed to member’s military stories. HBPD did not disappoint with their show of their static swat display, Equestrian Unit, and the big attraction of K9 Officer Marco’s skills showing why he’s one of the toughest police officers on HBPD’s force! Somewhat of a hard mist dropped on the venue around 1:00 p.m., but that didn’t seem to deter the over 150+ members who so graciously came out and supported the Toys for Tots Event. Congratulations OCR, for another fantastic, wonderful, giving demonstration of, IT’S THE PEOPLE! You donated enough toys to fill 17 USMC Toys for Tots boxes, and donated over $400 in the “Toys” cash box sitting out on the registration table, which will go toward Boys ages 12-14 who are in ‘homes’.

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

In the News

The new year starts with a bang as Porsche releases its latest racing 911, now with a new mid-engine configuration. The pictures are interesting and all that, but don’t get too excited, as this is not really a new idea. In the mid 1990’s, the racing tech wizards, Porsche, McLaren, and Mercedes, were in a racing war. They weren’t just looking for an advantage on the race track, but to secure dominance over the car makers. The whole “GT race car” idea was a race car based off of a production car, even if only limited in production. In fact, the teams got way beyond any resemblance to the production car they were supposed to represent. The Porsche 911 turbo, (1996-‘97 993 GT-2) was the quickest and fastest of all the real production based cars that raced. However, the rules (and loosely applied rules) allowed other cars with very loose interpretation of what was legal and that left the 993 GT-2 almost uncompetitive. In turn, Porsche responded and created a new car, a mid engine design called the 911 GT-1. Porsche turned the engine and transaxle around in the 993GT2- - - -, well, in actuality, they cut the ‘A’ pillar and some substructure out of a production line 993 assembly chassis and built a complete mid engine (962 engine) car with a high tech composite bodied, race car around it. Porsche raced it and won many times, but, in the end, I think it didn’t prove much of anything. Today’s new mid-engine racing 911, will, for the first time, have a non Mezger based 911 engine after a HALFCENTURY of dependable engine power.

Fig. 1. 964-993 open tan. The curved oil pipe is oil out the engine

INSIDE THE OIL TANKS: the 1974-’89 G-series tank. The red cap is the oil outlet to the engine.

Let us just hope the new motor lives up to its heritage.

besides the oil tank or is it something else?

These racing endeavors are sure interesting, and I suppose it shows what can be done by the “racing department”, but then it is a dramatic departure from Porsche’s philosophy of “selling what we race and race what we sell.” You know… Win on Sundays, Sell on Mondays! Maybe PORSCHE should simply put the flat six 911 engine in the Cayman, get some weight out of it, and race the CAYMAN? And you could put 911 stickers and rear quarter windows on it too if that helps sell 911s.

: In my 993 oil tank articles, I talked about my Navy aircraft experience and mentioned oil tanks, coolers, plumbing, and glossed over the “oil hopper.” I got ahead of myself and I didn’t really explain what the “oil hopper” is or was. SORRY. I admit I got a bit too carried away with details of that system.

Ask a Mechanic

Q

: What is an oil hopper that you mentioned in your 993 oil tank story? Is it something different

A

In all liquid systems, like the water for cooling system, fuel, and oil systems, the liquids in the systems need to be kept ready to be used in an instant. So, once oil is filtered and cooled, it is collected back into the oil tank where it is carefully kept in an area of the oil tank that is least subjected to hard braking, accelerating, or hard cornering. January 2017 | PANDO 35

In airplanes, which include very high G-loads and inverted flying, oil must always be ready to be used. This area is called the “oil hopper.” Porsche doesn’t specify the various internal parts inside of their oil tanks, but I assure you their oil tanks are critically designed and built to have a collection area that is the freest of G-loads and it is located in the deepest part of the oil tank where the siphon pick up is located. : My neighbor starts his car engine and lets his car idle for 510 minutes. He says that it helps his engine last longer. Should I do this on my 911 as well? What do you think?

Q

: Modern car engines warm up and stabilize temperatures much sooner and much better then earlier car engines. Still, warming up is a good idea. I recommend to start the engine and idle for 10 seconds and then drive off at an easy speed for a block or two. Sitting in idle for 5-10 minutes may warm up the car’s interior for driver comfort, but it is not necessary for engine reliability unless it is really cold –like in the 32°F region, or colder.

A

But what about when it is really cold, and for early Air – Cooled 911s? Since I lived in Columbus, Ohio, for 9 years and drove in – 28 degree temperatures, I can tell you some hard luck stories. Like being broke in college and not being able to afford anti-freeze for my hot rod Chevy. My solution was to take out the battery at night and I also drained the radiator each night until payday. Then I got anti-freeze and a new battery. What a blessing! But a cold engine is a stubborn beast to be sure. I found that sitting and idling for 1-2 minutes and then drive off slowly and load the engine in 1st or 2nd gear to get the r.p.m.s up –but always stay below 3,000 rpm for a few blocks. Then the temperature gauge would just start to come up.

36 PANDO | January 2017

My 2.2L 911S engine didn’t like being pushed when it was cold as well. You could feel its reluctance to rev when below 120°F degree indicated. I got off work for some years around 1-2 am and it was cold at LAX. So I sat and warmed the engine for 20 seconds or so, then dove off. By the time I got to the freeway, it would rev better, but RELUCTANTLY! That reluctance was piston /cylinder piston ring, FRICTION. It was not happy to be pushed too hard when not at its desired temperature. Getting on the freeway took almost W.O.T. (Wide Open Throttle) just to get up to freeway speed and my engine was not real happy about it. So, I tried a racing trick. The trick was while driving to the freeway, whenever I came to a stop or red light, I turned the engine off on coast down and stopped. When I saw the opposite lights turn yellow, then I would restart my engine and noticed after two or three times the engine sprang to life quicker and revved so much easier. I reasoned like airplanes the cooling fan (& air) was blasting cold night air on the top of the cylinders and they remained too cold to be evenly warmed like the lower part of the cylinders. Early 911S are like that and one should think about this when driving a cold aircooled engine... Of course the later water-cooled engines are so much better at temperature control and their warming needs are automatically done by computer. Nice!

Letter from the Editor Continued From Page 7 I want to give a special mention to Gloria Moore (she may not like this!) for the true mentor and friend to this magazine that she has been. Refusing recognition, she has proof read and molded without thanks to help us ever forward for the entire club. The Moore’s, Larry and Gloria, have been true friends to the Orange Coast Region for many years. Also, Maryann Marks deserves comment as the past Production Manager that took us to a new level in look and layout. Thanks Ma’am. Also, we should not forget Kenny Fredrickson and his charming wife, who did the advertising “shtick” for some years. They were the faces of the OCR with our advertisers and did a wonderful job of it setting the mark for Cooper and Nicole Boggs to follow in later years. I will close this little love fest with the general thanks that I started with to all those who have been engaged with the Pando over the years. There are many authors, kibitzers, photographers, and camp followers, that have helped us out over the years. To them, and even those to come, we say, “thank you”. And carry on!

But Wait, That’s Not All

Old Editors never fade away; they just turn into stubborn ink stains that not even “Febreeze” can remove. I intend to continue to submit articles from time to time, so I hope to have some “Pando” connection into the future.

Looking Back

I have always enjoyed writing, a bit strange for someone who’s main life work was keeping America safe with an accurate and reliable pressure gauge. My travels in that pressure capacity sent me around the world and allowed me to really get a glimpse into how great the U.S. is, and has been to live in these “excited states” and drive Porsches. I 42 PANDO | January 2017

mean, come on guys and girls, how can it get much better? Oh yes, I suppose someone could present me with a 918, if you want to do so please ask for my address and I’ll pass it along. So, this started out back in high school in Paramount, California. I was in Mr. Dodd’s Journalism class on the “Paramount Pirate”. I became editor of the “Feature Page”, which was pretty cool because I was able to obtain hall passes for important interviews, which usually took the shape of me getting to talk to all the cute girls of the classes of 1965-66. Like I said, very important. But it gave me a start, and while it also allowed me to realize that Nathanial Cooper was never to be dethroned from his literary perch by me; there was the completely satisfying realization that I liked this kind of stuff, the pen (in those pre computer days) and paper being mightier than the sword. It even got me into typing class, one guy in a room full of cute girls…you might see a pattern emerging here, which means it is time to move on. So, near as I can tell, I picked up this gig back in 2008. At least by November, I was listed on the masthead as “editor”. Editor in this sense meant the person in charge of begging for articles and submissions each month. Thanks to Ms. Kristen Jaoui, this is no longer the primary charge of an OCR editor. I was fully employed at that time and doing quite a bit of traveling. So much of the writing and article editing was done at 30,000 or so feet on a laptop, going from one exotic oil well town to another. At that time I was an ex-President of the club, and the President at that time, Armand Gastelo, begged, cajoled, and otherwise threatened to sign me up as Editor, “at least for the time being”. Being what? Perhaps he meant this decade? No complaints from me, and I trust not too many from our readership.

What has been the most gratifying has been the articles we’ve received from so many of you, the readership/ membership of the OCR. So many stories, some poignant, some a little sad, and some rather funny. But all from the heart and voicing the experience of our club for others to share. To all of you, I say thanks!

That Was Then

In November 2008, I wrote, “It is so much fun being involved with the OCR that I am sure it’s illegal in some totalitarian countries.” I also let the readers know that I was so late in planning my Halloween costume that all that was left to me was one half of a horse outfit… Guess which half? Here was my opening paragraph: “Being in the clubby rare wood lined halls of the OCR tower does have its’ rewards. However underneath the genteel surroundings there is that great rumbling printing press run with manic efficiency sucking in paper and words and spewing forth on a monthly basis our beloved magazine, “The Pandemonium”. Woe betide any man or woman who comes between the whirling drums and their need to meet deadlines…..I certainly don’t want to be the cause. So, we do have pressure which is ironic given that I make the world’s finest pressure gauges for a living. As they say in the south; there ya go”…..

And This is Now

And so I go…. Goodbye to all and welcome to Marcia Salans!
