LETTERFrom the Editor Happy New Year PCA-OCR from your Pando Team!

Your 2018 January Pando kicks off with a terrific pictorial showcasing our annual Toys For Tots Drive and BBQ highlighted by US Marines filling 19 boxes overflowing with toys generously donated by our PCA-OCR Membership with an unbelievable finale of an anonymous $10,000 check given to provide even more toys to needy children! The following day at Autocross, members generously contributed an additional box of toys to the toy drive. What better way to exemplify Porsches People Passion?! If 2018 contains 1 or 2 items on your bucket list, perhaps Stephen Bennett’s Nürburgring Experience may inspire you to consider adding another to your list; and if you want to see where our Porsche Brand is headed, check out “ The Future Of The Automobile” by Albert Aizin and Fred Aikins’ thoughts on the LA Auto Show. January has some really special events which I encourage you to check out either in the Pando Calendar or in the PCA-OCR App. Please register to attend:

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

PORSCHE

-The Man and His Cars by Richard von Frankenberg, published in 1961 by Robert Bently, Cambridge Mass. PORSCHE - The Man and His Cars was the first major biography of Dr. ing. h.c. Ferdinand Porsche. It remains one of the best. It is a perennial reference for the preparation of the ‘General’ section of the entire model specific Technical Quizzes at the Porsche Parade. No died-in-the-wool Porsche enthusiast should be without a copy. The book traces the ancestral roots of the Porsche family, complicated by changes in ‘nationality’ for some of the towns in question, as European dynasties ebbed and flowed. The description of Dr. Porsche’s youth makes him sound like a Tom Swift, conducting successful electrical experiments in secret, against the express orders of his father. However, success was sufficient for teenage Porsche as he was able to make his house the only one in the village to have electric lights. It was his electrical experiments that caused Dr. Porsche to become involved in cars, because when the Jacob Lohner Company wanted to expand their carriage business into automobiles, it decided to focus on electric cars and hired Porsche to design them. Notably, one of these cars (to which Dr. Porsche contributed so much (at the age of 24) became known as the Lohner-Porsche), was a car with a gasoline engine and electric motor propulsion. If that sounds like the definition of a Hybrid, then Dr. Porsche had Hybrids in production, long before EPA/Detroit ever thought of them! Oh, and along the way, he’d built a racing electric car with unique streamlining which he drove to shatter the record for the Semmering track. WWI buffs may be interested to note that in 1902, Arch Duke Ferdinand oversaw military maneuvers, using a Porsche designed staff

car, with young reserve infantryman Ferdinand Porsche as driver. To one steeped in the lore of Porsche automobiles, it is somewhat surprising to find that, as presented in this book, Dr. Porsche’s most productive years of automotive design were probably the late teens through the early 1930’s. But after all, a Porsche automobile first saw the light of day in 1949, and Dr. Porsche died at the end of January, 1952. It is son, Ferry ( given a car capable of 30 mph as a 10 year old ) who is really responsible for the Porsches now on the road. In addition to automobiles, Ferdinand Porsche designed military transporters, the great grandfather of the beetle engine, aircraft engines, a balloon supported ‘helicopter,’ and of course, race cars of various types, many of which he drove himself. The roster of his employees is the who’s-who of the European automobile industry. Every job resulted in stories of his focus, hands-on involvement, genius, and temper! He did not suffer fools, be they mechanics, engineers, or Members of the Board. Another fascinating little known story presented in this book, is the effort of the Stalin regime to recruit Porsche to be “State Designer of Russia.” Instead, in 1931 Dr. Porsche opened his own design firm, pirating key associates from the various companies for whom he had worked, and, in turn doing contract design work for those same firms. PORSCHE - The Man and His Cars makes clear that in addition to complete cars he designed, such as the Lohner-Porsche, Dr. Porsche was intimately involved with

designing racing modifications for quite a number of vehicles to which his name is not attached. In effect he served as what would now be called the ‘Engineer’ for a variety of racing teams. Unlike most Porsche books, this book is not just about the cars; it really is about THE Man, and what a man he was. All in all, this book presents a fascinating story of a complex individual, who has left an indelible mark on the world of automobiles, all because he was a kid fascinated by electricity. PORSCHE - The Man and His Cars contains 32 chapters, plus a chronology, in 224 8-1/2” by 5-1/4” pages, with 52 black and white plates. These ‘plates’ illustrate everything from Porsche designed electric race cars of 1900 and the ‘mixed drive’ Lohner-Porsche of 1902, to the 356B of 1959, and many Porsche designed race cars in between. Though a 1935 ‘beetle’ is included, pictures of Porsche’s WWII designs, the beetle derived German jeep, the Panzer Tank and artillery items, are notably absent. PORSCHE - The Man and His Cars, the original 1961 edition, is available from Amazon books for $34.95. A revised 1973 edition is also available. January 2018 | PANDO 9

WHO SAYS NO TO A PCA-OCR PARTY

WITH PORSCHES, WINNERS

AND MUCH, MUCH MORE?

The PCA-OCR Autocross Awards Party for the 2017 season will be on January 27, 2018 at the new and beautiful Porsche of Riverside showroom.

There will be trophies, jackets, free food, good times, and everyone is invited. That’s right; you don’t have to be a champion AX’er to party with one. So, please join the party! All you have to do is sign up on motorsportreg.com in advance (there’s no fee) and you’re in! Winners, losers, novices, firsttimers, board members, club enthusiasts, the merely interested and even the totally disinterested are all welcome! Besides enjoying getting together and in a party atmosphere, we really encourage first-timers to join us. These are good people that deserve recognition. I was a first-timer only a few years ago, and I remember it like yesterday. I got there really early and asked way too many questions, and even though the people in charge were totally awesome, I was super nervous. I remember sitting at the starting line waiting to take off on my first-ever lap, sweating profusely, shaking all-over, heart beating a million miles an hour, oh man . . . but, I did it . . . and on November 12, 2017, so did these brave souls: : : Carol Bennett #3610 : : Ryan Bourque #8485 : : Gerry Crews #2006 : : David Harvey #893 : : Scott Leslie #2421 : : Wolfgang Hoeck #348 : : Olav Nasiell #879 : : Harry Solakian #873 CONGRATULATIONS! T

he wind subsided, the sun was shining and it was a beautiful summer afternoon, I mean a winter day at Huntington Beach Central Park Picnic Shelter. Our Marines sent a squad of troops with their 155mm Howitzer and a battle-ready Humvee, and HBPD sent their SWAT team with a complete display including a “Bear” assault vehicle. Members and Santa’s kids were invited to explore and question the troops. A steady and consistent flow of OCR members filled the picnic area while toys were being piled high in boxes, and the smell of hamburgers and hotdogs filtered through the air. K9 Officer Marco demonstrated his skills twice. Kids’ laughter echoed the bounce house and Santa listened carefully to the wishes of anxious children, who all received a special holiday decorated bag filled with coloring books, crayons and a candy cane. So many toys were donated, that reinforcements were called in for more boxes! A Total of nineteen (19) boxes were filled with OCR member donations. That’s a record!

Last year we filled seventeen (17) boxes! One of our very generous members, who wishes to remain anonymous, presented a $10,000 check to the USMC Charity that Master Sgt. Doon accepted on behalf of the USMC. Talk about a great day! The following day at Autocross, members generously contributed an additional box of toys to the Toy Drive.

Thank you OCR for your very generous support, because of you, many children will have a very Merry Christmas!

Cayman S with my instructor Michael

Apart from enjoying Autocross with a great bunch of

people, (a shout out to all the sponsors and the guys who set this up every month!) along with some instructing and track work; I have always wanted to experience the Nürburgring. This past September I finally bit the bullet and set up my ‘Ring’ experience through Fast Lane Travel. They organized accommodations at the Dorint Hotel, with a balcony room overlooking the GP Track. When my wife and I arrived, there was a race on, so we sat there watching some beautiful Porsches screaming by and all I could think was,” I wish I was out there driving right now!”

Michael, a veteran who had driven the Ring over 8,000 times. We jumped into a new Cayman S, I adjusted my mirrors and seat position, and Michael said “just listen to me and we will have a great time.” We warmed up the tires, then off we went! This was a completely different experience from the 500 laps driven on my simulator back home, requiring

Early the next morning, we headed to the Nürburgring to experience a hot lap with Ring Taxi in a GT3 driven by Theo, not only a legend on the track, but also a truly experienced driver who demonstrates the true capabilities of this amazing track car. Then it was my turn to drive the Ring with my instructor 24 PANDO | January 2018

Theo’s GT3

NüRBURGRING EXPERIENCE Story and Photos by Stephen Bennet

total concentration, driving 14 miles of track, taking 73 turns, what a blast! Michael said that the Ring is one of the hardest and most challenging tracks you can experience, and he was spot on! After my first lap, I was feeling very comfortable. My instructor was excellent, very calm, cool and precise with his commands. Entering the apex at the right point, flying out and onto the next apex, it was a pure high-speed adrenalin rush, pure FUN!! A rain shower during my 5th and 6th laps made things a little more challenging but didn’t dampen my enthusiasm.

We reached speeds over 140 MPH on some parts of the track. I had the car sliding around a little which was fun. On the very last corner leading onto the straight, we approached a slower car and I went to take him on the outside, damper part of the track, only to have his car lose traction and spin right in front of me! Thankfully, I managed to navigate the very stable Cayman S around the spinner much to the delight of my instructor who said, “very good driving Stephen.” If you ever get the opportunity to drive a car round the “Ring,” do it, it’s such a great experience! The Future of the C

ar Technology has been progressing so quickly it has forgotten the most important part of the drive, “The Experience.” Electrical cars offer several advantages to traditional combustion engines. Some of them include lower fuel costs, car pool lane access, and most importantly instantaneous torque. The 2017 Tesla Model S P100D with ludicrous mode scoots from 0 to 60 in 2.4 seconds, runs the quarter mile in 10.6 seconds, and packs 762 HP and carries a base price of $142,000. It’s faster to 60 MPH than a 2017 Ferrari 488 GTB which costs double its price. Yet if speed was all that mattered, we would all be driving around in the latest and quickest vehicle that was offered. I was a sitting passenger in the previous generation Tesla Model S P85D with ludicrous mode and was quite impressed with the immediate surge of torque. It was without a doubt, an impressively fast car, yet something tangible was missing. The Tesla generated its speed in a stealth and inorganic way. There is no taste, smell or noise Experience. If you want fast, you can cook food in a microwave oven in half the time of a conventional oven. Yet, what matters most when it comes to a nice meal is the taste, smell, and nutritional content of the food. Research has shown when you nuke your food in a microwave, you often kill many of the beneficial nutrients contained within your food. As a teenager, I loved eating Chinese food and wondered why it tasted so different after I reheated my leftovers in a microwave. At age 15, my homeopathic doctor friend told me to unplug the microwave oven and never use it again, words I strictly adhere to 30 years later. It’s hard to believe the Tesla Model S has only been around since June of 2012. It feels like they have been roaming the world for 10 + years. So many of them call Southern California home, that it feels rather ordinary when you spot one. By year-end 2016, there were about 30 different EV offerings in the U.S., with total sales of 159,139 vehicles. Five different models sold at least 10,000 units in 2016: Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf, and Ford Fusion Energi. More than half of all EV sales took place in California, driven by the state’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which requires that a certain percentage of an automaker’s sales must be ZEVs. California’s goal is to put 1.5 million ZEVs on the state’s roads by 2025. EVs in the U.S. have grown at a 32% compounded annual growth rate over the past four years. Globally, growth has been even

30 PANDO | January 2018

stronger. Since 2014 global EV sales have more than doubled. Following a 72% jump in 2015, 2016 saw a 41% global increase in sales to reach 777,497 vehicles. Car manufacturers know the Future of the Automobile lies in electrical power. Strict emissions regulations are forcing car companies to go electrical or get left behind. Porsche is not taking the Tesla threat lightly. It has spent over $1 billion developing the Porsche Mission E, which will compete directly with Tesla. It will come equipped with an all-wheel drive system with Porsche Torque Vectoring. Like the 911 GT3 and 911 Turbo models, all four wheels help to steer. Charging time and the range of a car are key topics in electromobility. Porsche is breaking new ground with the Mission E by doubling the standard charging voltage to 800. This results in shorter charging times as well as less weight. The size of the lithium-ion battery enables the car to drive more than 300 miles on a single charge. It needs only 15 minutes to recharge for another 250 miles of range. With a combined output of more than 600 HP, it should catapult the Mission E to 60 miles per hour in less than 3.5 seconds, and to 124 miles per hour in less than 12 seconds. The bigger question will be, “Is Porsche capable of generating a soulful driving experience with the Mission E?” We will soon find out, as it is scheduled to be released in 2019. I purchased a Porsche 911 because of its rewarding driving experience and cannot imagine what a 911 Electric would feel like. Porsche has hinted it is not out of the question. Many of us Gearheads drive our sports cars because of the special way they make us feel. We get excited about getting behind the wheel and driving Highway 1 to Big Sur. Cars communicate to us through the engine, steering wheel, and exhaust. If the “Future of the Automobile” is a future without internal combustion engines, let’s hope they allow us to keep the cars currently resting in our garages which are not electric. No matter how good of a job manufacturers do with their electric cars, there are still some things in life which cannot be replaced. Starting your engine, hearing a car pass by and imagining what car produced that sound symphony, feeling all of the road nuances telepathically relayed through your hydraulic steering rack are but a few. Let’s do our best to keep that passion alive for our kids so they can responsibly enjoy and experience it. There’s a reason Top Chefs prepare their meals using a gas flame and not the microwave. Quality cannot be rushed and neither can the driving experience.

2017 :: Los Angeles Auto Story by Fred Aikens

T he press preview days for the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show

were held on Wed., Nov. 29, and Thurs., Nov. 30. While many of the previews from other manufacturers featured a near-endless array of crossovers and SUVs, our favorite marque brought forth several sports cars. Porsche’s display took up the entirety of Petrie Hall, their usual dedicated space just off the main lobby of the LA Convention Center. This gives Porsche an air of exclusivity with no other brands vying for the attention of its guests.

First up was the purist-oriented 911 Carrera T. Inspired by the original 1968 911T (for Touring) this Carrera T slots in above the base 911 Carrera and the Carrera S models. It features a lighter weight, including thinner rear and rear side glass, and an active PASM sports chassis with a lowering function. The interior is trimmed in Alcantara and features fabric door pulls. If you opt for the sport seats, you can delete the rear jump seats for a further savings of 45 lbs (20kg). Power comes from a 370-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine coupled to a manual transmission (look, Ma, three pedals!) with shorter gear ratios for improved acceleration. Next up were the new 718 Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS models, highlighted by a higher-output 365-hp version of the turbocharged flat-four found in the other 718 Cayman and 32 PANDO | January 2018

Boxster models. The increase in horsepower is due to a revised intake tract and standard sport exhaust. Both 718 Cayman and Boxster GTS models are available with either a six-speed manual or PDK transmission. As with other Porsche GTS models, the 718 Cayman and Boxster GTS feature special black trim outside – front apron, rear valance, headlight modules, tailpipes and wheels. Inside, there are sport seats with Alcantara centers, GTS logos on the headrests, more Alcantara trim on the steering wheel, center console and armrests. For track-day enthusiasts, there’s even a Porsche Track Precision App (PTPA – yet another acronym to remember) that enables the driver to record, display and analyze driving data on their smartphone. Lastly, Porsche showed the new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo (which may be a contestant for longest model name ever!) This stunning sportwagon boasts an eye-popping 680-hp powertrain that combines a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with a 100kW electric motor. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo is capable of traveling up to 31 miles (49km) on electric power alone. It features all-wheel-drive for superior traction, all the better to put all that power to the ground. The transmission is an eight-speed PDK. The hybrid system has a 14.1kW lithiumion battery that charges in 2.4-6 hours, depending on the charger and power source.

Show

So, why does Porsche pull out all the stops in L.A. and not one of the other major U.S. auto shows? Simple, because California is where the buyers are! A quarter of all of Porsches U.S. sales come from California. In fact, if California were a separate country, it would rank as Porsche’s fifth-largest market.

S U P E R C A R S

There were other performance car introductions of note at this year’s L.A. Auto Show. Mercedes showed their F1-inspired Project ONE hypercar, featuring a turbo V6 hybrid powertrain, low and wide coupe bodywork with a central roof-mounted intake and dorsal fin. BMW showed the spyder version of their i8 hybrid sports car in production guise. They also showed their new 8-Series coupe in concept form, although it looks pretty close to production. An M8 version has already been spotted in testing and should be unveiled next year. Two new supercars were also shown at Los Angeles. The first is from Saleen, who is back with a carbon-fiber bodied two-seat coupe powered by a 450-hp turbocharged inline-four. The stated price tag is $100K, which puts it in theoretical competition with the 911 Carrera. The other new entry is the Aria FXE, which claims to have a 1,150-hp 6.2-liter V8 hybrid power train. Pricing wasn’t announced, but is rumored to be $1million+. Who is Aria, you ask? They have made their name and reputation building concept cars for many of the major automakers; now they’ve decided to try their hand at a limited-production hypercar. January 2018 | PANDO 33

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

As 2018 kicks off, the past has caught up with us once again in the “family of Porsche”

PETER W. SCHUTZ, † SAVIOR OF THE 911, PASSES AWAY Read more: http://autoweek.com/article/car-life/throttleback-thursday-porsche-ceo-peter-schutz-unlikely-roadtop#ixzz4xIfuBdTN

I t is with heavy hearts that we pass along

the news of Peter Schutz’s death; the courageous man who kept the 911 alive, dragged Porsche out of the doldrums, and revitalized their racing program. Not only did Schutz possess a fighting spirit, but he listened to his peers and worked with some of the brightest minds to grace Porsche. These qualities helped him take Porsche from a struggling company when he joined, to tripling their sales a few years later. In 1981, when Schutz joined Porsche, acting as CEO until 1987, Porsche was experiencing their first recorded losses and on the verge of replacing the iconic 911 with the 924 and 928. Wisely, Schutz held onto the brand-defining 911 and instead, diversified the model; introducing the popular Cabriolet, the exotic 911 Speedster, and the techno-heavy 959, the latter serving as a test bed for technologies that would make the 911 a more palatable product. His championing of these offshoots stemmed

from the intelligent men he surrounded himself with, namely Porsche, Bott, Falk, Singer, and Jantke, and his willingness to listen to them. He was also a fighter and a pragmatist, and this helped Porsche’s motorsports program immeasurably. Instead of chancing Le Mans success with the unproven 924, he revitalized the aging 936 and the development of the fantastic 956-962. He famously proclaimed “as long as I am in charge of this company, we will never go to any race without the objective of winning.” This single-minded and sensible approach to competition helped take Porsche Motorsports to the level of consummate professionalism it’s known for today, and any Porsche fan owes him their respect. I have said in the past, two men enabled us to still have our 911 passion; Alois Ruf and Peter Schutz ... Godspeed!

Announced in SAE tech journals is the ever more use of engines with NO CAMSHAFTS! Sorry Isky! All the names involved are many and varied from “free valve” “Qamfree” “Koenigsegg,” yes, that popular YouTube video of the super-fast Regela: that’s his. These are pneumatic-hydraulic-electronic actuated and show claimed 47% increase in power, 45% increase in torque and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption compared to regular cam shaft systems! That’s just flat AMAZING folks!! In spite of the trendy, political hatred for oil, gasoline, and anything involving internal combustion, the piston engine is a very, very efficient power generator. As much as I love gas turbines and jet engines, they cannot match the power extraction of a piston engine, not yet! Anything that gives us less mass, less weight, and less complication will greatly make cars, and yes, our Porsche even January 2018 | PANDO 39

better for all of us, and our environment, and our future as well. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Camless_piston_engine Also for general amusement see: “TRADITION NOT DEAD YET, Reports of the demise of the internal combustion engine have been greatly exaggerated,” by Andrew Frankel. SEE: www. MOTORSPORTMAGAZINE.com September 2017 Pg. 52-53 and Oh, that page 53, just happens to have a nice image and story [Power and Glory] of the new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS and a bit about the new option: “Weissach Pack”

WD-40 or duct tape ? Check the chart.

A few things I missed getting in during 2017, so here goes;

The following article is an excellent and well done article explaining and showing how you can replace the front suspension bushings on a 911, 930 Turbo (& 914) in a home garage. Permatex super glue : Explanation : This stuff works too soon and too good.

Silicone sealant : Gets hard in the tub, too soon? Solution : I tried an old drill bit shoved through the cap and into the tube and it stays fresh for months and months. Rice’s Ramblings: Ask a Mechanic If you have a question about your Porsche, please send in your question to Lee at - riceturbos@sbcglobal.net

40 PANDO | January 2018

Alternative Porsche Suspension Bushings Rubber suspension bushings in the older street Porsches (roughly 69-89 911/912) don’t last forever. After about 40 years, mine started squeaking. While trying to find out where the squeak was coming from, I noticed the rubber bushings had collapsed and were no longer centering the various suspension components. It was time to change them. I found basically three types of replacement bushings available. There are the rubber original style, the polyurethane type and various types of racing bushings some of which have grease fittings. I agree with Mr. Rice of (Rice’s Ramblings) (June 2017 Pando; Ask a Mechanic) that the racing type for various reasons are just not suitable for the street. I feel that the best all around solution for the street are the after market rubber style bushings.

One advantage the various racing style bushings have, because of their design and sometimes use of grease fittings, there is little resistance to suspension movement. I started thinking about the possibility of adding grease fittings to a set of the polyurethane type bushings with the goal of getting compliance and freedom of motion somewhere between the original rubber and the very harsh racings types. That’s how my experiment started. The following photos will give you an idea of my process. I used a small boring bar and a model maker’s lathe (Figure 5.1) but there may be other ways to create the center grease channel.

Figure 5.1 : Using a small boring bar to create a grease channel in the center of the polyurethane bushing

Figure 5.2 : shows the center grease channel

Figure 5.3 : shows the hand cut channel between the drill hole to the grease fitting, and the central grease channel. That illustrates the path to force grease between the bushing and the suspension A arm in this case. A similar process is used on the large outer trailing arm bushings in the rear.

sanding or cutting of the bushings may be necessary to avoid excessive binding of the suspension. The “May be” part is probably optimistic if your goal is freedom of motion. This is truly the hardest part. Before pressing everything together, I needed to remove some material from the bushings so there was a reasonable interference fit, but not so tight that the suspension bushings hinder free motion. In my case, this was a trial and error process but works out well if you keep in mind that when everything is pressed together, the bushing material is compressed quite a bit. Again my goal was freedom of motion. That didn’t mean that the bushings were loose on the suspension arm, but they were much easier to move than if no material was removed from the bushing.

The manufacturers of polyurethane bushings always seem to have a statement in their procedures that some

Figure 5.7: Relief cut to front tow eye mount to fit grease gun.

There are a variety of ways to press the bushings in place: The right way is with a press which I don’t have. Figures 5.5 and 5.6 show some of the solutions that I found. Figure 5.8 : Rear A arm mount with grease fitting.

Figure 5.5 : Rear A arm bushing pressed in place using a vice.

Figure 5.4 : This is the front A arm mount completed . Photo shows how the completed front A arm mount looks with the grease fitting in place. A single groove is probably not optimum but it does work to spread a thin layer of grease between the bushing and the A arm. Careful consideration of the location of the grease fitting is necessary to make future maintenance easy.

Planning the positions of the grease fittings is important for the ease of maintenance: The front tow eye mount on my car required some relief to be able to access the grease fitting (Figure 5.7). The rear mount was easier to access because of the shape of the suspension cross member (Figure 5.8). I grease the bushings about once a year.

Figure 5. 6 : Rear A arm suspension mount and bushing being pressed onto the A arm using a two jaw puller and a very large washer. Notice the generous amount of grease on the A arm. Both of these methods are crude but they work. I’ve heard of bar clamps also being used.

This system is still probably a little harsh for the street compared to the rubber bushings, but it certainly feels like a handling improvement to me. It definitely improves road feel and now I can see why bushings with little or no compliance are of value in a racing environment. Polyurethane bushings trimmed for freedom of motion and with grease fittings might even be a good and more cost effective solution for improved handling in street cars used in Auto X. I always intended to eventually install the rubber type bushings all around but never did. It’s been several years now and I’m not sure I ever will. John Nestor, OCR Godspeed
