Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

W

ith a blink of an eye, 2018 is in the rearview mirror! I hope it was a great year for you and your family, and I wish you and yours an outstanding New Year. I want to thank every OCR member who volunteered their time and talent this past year, just as I thank Zone 8 staff and PCA National leadership for their time and efforts. It has been a pleasure watching Carin Cooper move PCA forward through her role as national president, and I expect she will continue to add significant value in her new role as the immediate past president. The PCA national board retains experience and momentum as all other 2018 elected officers continue, albeit in new roles. The one new addition to the national board, serving as Treasurer, is Craig Kugler who most recently served as Chairman of the Audit Committee, as well as Chair of the Region Finance Committee. During this past year I have had the opportunity to spend time with Craig, and I expect he will serve our club well in his new role. 2018 has provided me with the opportunity to meet more OCR members than I would otherwise have had the opportunity to meet, and that has been an unanticipated upside of my current role. We have updated our Bylaws and added a Code of Ethics

oing

and Conduct to conform our governance with PCA National Standards. Moreover, we have restored our cash balances to reasonable levels. During the first 2018 OCR board meeting (February), I learned our cash balances had fallen to below $15,000, which was an unpleasant surprise. Through diligence and the efforts of many, at the end of October (most recent financials at the time I prepared this message) we had rebuilt our cash balance to approximately $115,000. Please remember you can view our financials and board minutes via the digital board book. Digital board book access information is published in each issue of PANDO.

I expect 2019 to be a terrific year for OCR despite challenges that are sure to come our way. I am pleased to announce we will be changing venues for our annual concours; we expect multi-region participation as well as participation by members of the 914 Registry, all of whom will join us June 15th at Sea Terrace Park in Dana Point (adjacent to the Monarch Beach Resort). Mile Square has served us well, with more than 150 cars in 2018, but the change will keep the event fresh. In 2019 we will begin work on rebuilding our website, with a view to improving its value to members. Please let me know your ideas on what you believe would be useful. In addition to updating the look and feel of the website, we want to add sections for member classified ads, our governance related items such as the Code of Ethics and Bylaws, our financial statements and board minutes, and links to Porsche-related content. I’m also delighted to announce we will restart our charitable Hearts and Garages Tour (progressive dinner) in 2019, for the benefit of Semper Fi Fund. Many of us have enjoyed the event over the years and will be happy to see its return. Our Annual Brunch is this week (Sunday, January 6th), so if you haven’t already purchased your tickets please

one

contact Vice President Crag Simonin to see if we have any seats left. We would love to have you join us at the Tustin Ranch Golf Club. That said, its time for us to find a new venue for our next annual brunch, and we would love your input on venues you would like to attend. We have almost 2,600 members, yet somehow rarely do we ever get more than 6% of our membership to participate in any event. Back-of-the-envelope calculus suggests we have 300 “active” members, and 2,300 “PANDO/PANORAMA-only” members. If you’re an active member, please let us know what you like and don’t like about our activities, and more importantly how we can improve the experience. We know even the best events can get stale, so we need your ideas and energy. If you’re a PANDO/ PANORAMA-only member, please let us know how we can engage your interest. Our goal is to deliver meaningful content for the majority of members, not just the 2-6 percent pockets of our members, which cumulatively represent no more than 12% of total membership. As an example, we have many members with four door sport cars who have indicated they sometimes feel like step-children to the 911-only folks. As an owner of both two and four door Porsche vehicles, I can assure you it isn’t intentional, and we would love your active involvement. Shoot, later this year I expect to have electric-only sportscars join us at events, so perhaps that will be a special interest group as well. In any case, help us create and organize activities you would like.

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

HOT WHEELS FROM 0 TO 50 AT 1:64 SCALE by Kris Palmer, with foreword by Larry Wood, published September 26, 2018 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN Nostalgia time indeed! A Hot Wheels book that comes in a replica Hot Wheels storage case. For the dedicated Hot Wheels fan, this case is clearly a must. Not only is the feel of the plastic authentic, the enclosed book provides more information about Hot Wheels, their design, production and marketing with more than the nonenthusiast would have ever believed existed. The foreword by one who spent 40 years designing Hot Wheels cars provides insight into what was very much a ‘California-Casual’ company. As described, Mattel was virtually founded to peddle the products of a very prolific artist/designer who, it turned out, had great marketing insight. It was a company built, not to fill market vacuums, but to create products that would build their own demand. Hot Wheels were initiated into a world where Matchbox, Dinky, Corgi, Husky and other toy cars had been established for years. HOT WHEELS tells a story interesting for its insights into business management, as much as for the history of what is now claimed to be the best-selling toy in the world! It is the story of an idea for a new product that was alien to the current flagship product (dolls for girls), a product designed for what ‘experts’ believed to be a sutured market, a product that achieved production levels of a million per day! The Hot Wheels world was one of ceaseless challenge to innovate and one-up any competition. The engineers’ creativity was honed by management’s willingness to produce and try marketing most any crazy product, an amazing number of which did

sell, even Hot Wheels birthday candles! Many Hot Wheels specialty items were sold in small quantities, so their description in this book will be eye-opening to most readers. Enough to make one want to be a kid again and catch up on that neat stuff that got missed on the first pass through youth. Because Hot Wheels had a strong marketing focus, they upscaled some of their special vehicles, often using Corvette running gear. There is an interesting description of how they even upscaled some of their stunts, staring a full-sized version of a hot wheel’s car, on a full-sized version of the iconic orange track and performed full-sized versions of Hot Wheels loops and jumps! There are five chapters and several illustrated Timelines, cataloging some of the Hot Wheels models. Unfortunately, nowhere is there a complete listing of all Hot Wheels models. The book references as many as 120 new models a year, so a complete listing would be a Herculean task and be boring to most readers.

There is Porsche content. Many Porsche models were miniaturized and the book has a picture of a small private collection displayed in front of the owner’s real world early 911 racer. HOT WHEELS is a very readable presentation of a complex and ever evolving story. It is a book that can be enjoyed even by those (few?) lacking interest for the Hot Wheels hobby. The author, Kris Palmer has written several other car-oriented books, including Dream Garages, which was reviewed a little over four years ago. With its unique presentation format--a book in a plastic case, complete with a handle-it would make a most memorable gift for any occasion. The book itself is hardbound, with 160 highly detailed illustrated 8x11 inch pages, but no index. It should be available for $40.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it,) or from Motorbooks.com January 2019 | PANDO 7

A

fter a stormy-rainy couple of days, blue skies prevailed at the Toys for Tots Drive on December 8th in Huntington Beach. Toys were flowing, children’s laughter filled the air and the oohs and ahs were heard from far away when Lance, the miniature horse appeared in his holiday livery. Santa came all the way from Arizona and drove into the event in his 996 Cabriolet. U.S.M.C. arranged an impressive cross-barrel display of Howitzers with two full squads helping transport the boxes filled with toys. H.B.P.D. was on hand with their Static SWAT Display and team; and rounding out the day’s event, and the crowd pleaser, was K-9 Officer Marco demonstrating his jaw-gripping skills.

A resounding 16 boxes of toys and $10,060 in cash donations were collected by OCR. Thank you for your generosity and compassion for the children who are underprivileged to help them have a better, brighter Christmas!

Special thanks to the volunteers who helped support the event and to Surf City Bouncers who continue to give us special pricing on their Bounce House. Quote of the day: “Grandpa, are we going to the place where we give presents and we don’t get anything back”? (Each child who saw Santa, was given a gift.)

2018 :: Los Angeles Auto Story and Photos by Fred Aikins

Porsche Unveils All New 911 at 2018 LA Auto Show

While there were significant new car introductions at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show (also known as AutomobilityLA,) perhaps none was as important to sports car enthusiasts as the launch of the all-new 2020 Porsche 911.

The eighth-generation 911 (992) is immediately recognizable as a 911 (you don’t mess with an iconic design too much), yet the chassis is new. The front track has been widened by 1.77 inches, while the rear body width is just under 73 inches, the same as the previous model’s Carrera 4 and GTS models. Externally, the new 911 features larger front air intakes, flushmounted door handles, larger rear air extractors and a full-width LED strip between the taillights. The slats in the engine cover grille are longitudinally oriented, which appears to aid airflow and harkens back to the grilles on the classic 356 models – a nice touch, and a change from previous 911 engine cover grilles. The body panels are all aluminum. New LED headlights are integrated into the front fender sheet metal, which extends forward to the front bumper fascia. Wheels are 20-inches in front and 21-inches at the rear, fully filling the wheel arches. The 3-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine is updated from the previous model and delivers 443-hp and 390-lb-ft of torque, an increase of 23-hp and 22-lb-ft. Zero to 60mph times should be in the mid- to low-3-second range, with models equipped with the Sport Chrono package a couple tenths quicker. Larger turbos, an improved intercooler and new injectors are responsible for the power gains. Power is routed through a new 8-speed PDK transmission, although a 7-speed manual will also be offered. 24 PANDO | January 2019

A new interior design greets the driver, drawing inspiration from 911 interiors of the 1970s. A large, centrally mounted tachometer is flanked by two digital screens displaying other information (speed, fuel level, etc.). There’s a large infotainment screen in the center of the dash. As with most cars today, a suite of apps is available, including one that offers a variety of curated route suggestions for driving roads around the country. The new 2020 911 Carrera S and 4S models go on sale next summer, with prices expected to start at $114,000. Porsche also used the LA show to roll out the 911 GT2 RS Clubsport, a limited-edition track-only version of the road-going GT2 RS. With production of this model limited to only 200 units worldwide, this will be the must-have track weapon for the wellheeled Porsche enthusiast. Power for the GT2 RS Clubsport comes from a 700-hp version of the twin-turbo flat-six with optimized intercooler and a race-developed water-spray system mated to a 7-speed PDK transmission. The race-tuned suspension was tuned at Porsche’s Weissach R&D Center with three-way shock absorbers that are adjustable for both compression and rebound. This permits the car to be set up according to track conditions and driver preference. The single-seat GT2 RS Clubsport features carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) body panels for reduced weight. The interior is similarly stripped out and race-focused with the addition of a full safety cage, fire suppression system, Recaro racing seat w/ 6-point harness. There’s also a 115-liter racing fuel cell and front and rear tow loops to ensure compliance with FIA safety regulations. Porsche didn’t announce pricing for the GT2 RS Clubsport, but you can be assured it won’t be cheap. If you want one, act quickly. With only 200 available worldwide, they won’t last long.

Upcoming PCA Event:

Be in Boca for Parade 2019! Summer 2019

We’re lucky to be the Host Zone for Parade 2019 – and we’d love to see you there! It will be held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf-Astoria … and the room rates will be very reasonable for this luxurious resort. In early 2019, we’ll have complete details, and registration for the hotel and for Parade will be open then. So, plan now for your 2019 summer vacation to be at Parade in Boca.In case you’re not familiar, it’s a beautiful part of Florida: on the Atlantic, just north of Fort Lauderdale, with July’s comfortable sea breezes and summer temps in the high 80s. At 2018’s Parade, there were about 900 Porsches and almost 1,800 attendees. It took 40 year-round Volunteers and more than 700 on-site Volunteers to make it happen. For 2019, we’ll need 100s of Volunteers as well, from all over the country, and there will be an official Volunteer Registration process. But if you’re interested in helping on the front end, by providing local expertise and help with planning Tours, Rallies, and all the other events, please let your Region Leadership know now or email zone 12rep@pca.org. We’ll see you at Parade 2019! Stay tuned for more information, but check out these sites now:

• Boca Raton Resort and Club • 2019 Porsche Parade Facebook Page • PCA National Website for Porsche Parade Are you a new PCA member? Well, welcome to the Club!! But you might be asking, “What’s all this about a ‘Parade’?” Porsche Parade is the “big” Porsche Club event of the year: our annual national convention. Parade has a wide variety of activities and club members from all across North America (and elsewhere!) come together for this once-a-year extravaganza to participate in a week of competitive events, to socialize and enjoy their cars, with seminars and tours adding to the event’s variety. For many club members, Parade is their big vacation for the year. It provides them with an opportunity to see new parts of the country as well as to visit with PCA friends that they only see once a year, at Parade! Competitive Events:

• 5k Run/Walk • Autocross • Concours d’Elegance • RC Cars • Tech Quiz • Gimmick Rally • TSD Rally

Other Events and Activities:

• Art Show • Driving Tours • Ice Cream Social • Parade of Porsches • Seminars

Cone Zone Update by Rob Greene The OCR Porsche Alley CONE ZONE emerged from hiatus with a patriotic fanfare at the Club’s July 7th Breakfast Meeting by featuring RED WHITE & BLUE Porsches. Although this restart marks the fourth annual series of monthly cone zone adventures, those of you Porsche fanatics who have joined PCA’s Orange Coast Region in the past few months may be wondering, “Where is Porsche Alley and what is an OCR Cone Zone?” A little over three years ago, with a slightly twisted PCA slogan, “It’s the cars with the people,” we began a new feature at our monthly breakfast meetings: One row of parking stalls (hence, the “Alley”) at Original Mike’s was coned off with slightly-used orange traffic cones donated by PCA-OCR’s Autocross (thanks!). Parking in this zone of cones is reserved for a designated class of Porsche or driver that varies from month-to-month. Our first series highlighted different models

of Porsche, our second series focused on color to determine which VIP (very important Porsche) would get Cone Zone parking preference. The most recent series included color exercises, a model type, and different types of equipment on fabulous Porsches. In addition to the traditional RED WHITE and BLUE colors for last July, we featured fixed rear wings, various wheel sizes, all cabriolets, and even no-cones parking by color sorting (think Skittles, M&Ms, or gum drops in color groups!) Yes, we are a funloving bunch.

• JANUARY – No Porsche Alley Cone Zone--- Attend the PCA - OCR Annual Member Brunch! • FEBRUARY – Air-cooled engines. Park head-in and open those lids! • MARCH – Water-cooled engines. Park head-in and let’s see what you have!

I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions and additions.

The plan for the new monthly Cone Zone themes follows, and special thanks to members who provided some great ideas!
